Charlie Sheen on domestic violence: "Women are not to be hit"

Another moment from Piers Morgan's hour-long interview with Charlie Sheen touched on the issue of domestic violence. Drawing from Sheen's past, Piers asked him point blank: "Have you ever hit a woman?" "Women are not to be hit," he said. "They are to be hugged and caressed."

But then Sheen did recall one incident, one that he admitted to regretting, and described it in great detail.

Very impressive interview. Piers guided this interview like a real pro. He has a real talent to handle these difficult interviews and keep conversation going for close to an hour. With all the bad press on Mr. Sheen Piers really gave him a genuine chance to speak his mind. Great flow.
Clearly Mr. Sheen has his issues but he actually represented himself fairly well too. The rest of the media is a bit shameful taking only the worst tidbits of all the interviews for their highlights.

Piers Morgan works for CNN. He is paid to get people like Martin to say yes to hard questions even if they feel unwell and uncontrolled. I am an educated person who wants to tell Piers that what you did tonight to Martin Sheehan was truly shocking regardless of your advantage in the UK.

Piers Morgan is fabulous. I love his interviews and impartiality. What a relief, what a privilege. Wonderful interview with Charlie Sheen, Pier, handled very intelligently. CNN is so lucky to have you. Yours is the best interview show on American TV.

Charlie Sheen gets a second chance. His show has been the source of so much laughter in my life. I do not want the show to end. Charlie may have associated TOO much with the character (?), I don't know, BUT if so, I pray that he recovers. I seriously hope that he does. I'm wanting him to have a blessed recovery.

@vhall- "Charlie may have associated TOO much with the character (?), I don't know..."
On the contrary, the show was literally (freely) based on Charlie Sheen as a man and his lifestyle. Not always a nice guy – men would certainly identify better with him- the drinking, the womanizing, the carelessness. The character is not exactly a nice guy but he´s a friend, funny and talented. That was Sheen in real life. The writer/creator found his living character. This is public knowledge in the industry. Perhaps, Sheen´s character actually beat his own persona and now the real original Sheen became an emotionally and mentally fragile and drug addict and alcoholic. The good news is that all that is treatable and he can overcome and have a comeback when he is ready.

I saw the interview today and felt Piers would do well to let people answer the question being asked. Especially near the end of the interview, he posed the same question three or four ways when all he had to do was let Charlie finish the question in the first place! Additionally, I felt the interview was a bit "safe" and didn't ask Charlie the questions straight up. It was an hour long conversation with Charlie and nothing new was uncovered. Hopefully Sheen gets the help he needs.

Piers may have guided this interview, but he sure blew last night with Hefner. Apparently he didn't have the balls to ask what we were all wondering – Did you have your YOUNG little fiance sign a prenuptual agreement before you marry her? That takes guts, Piers, and it appears you didn't have any. Too bad! Hope you grow gonads soon!

I hope that all pray for him, Charlie Sheen is a great talent that comes from talent, but he is just a person not a super hero ,just a man, and at this moment in his familys life it it not about the money it is about his life, which can not be replaced by money , it must be truely difficult for them all to face this problem, they know the truth, may God be with this family at this most difficult time, there are just things money can not buy

    @C Kov- Very true.
The media frenzy can drive anyone mad. I honestly think Sheen might have bipolar disorder and on top of it be a coke addict. However, that doesn´t make him any less human, talented, interesting or contradictory like most of us. It´s obvious he needs treatment but what American corporations like CBS needs only feeds his weaknesses. As Sheen and Morgan pointed out, his character can be a womanizer but he (Sheen) can´t, his character can drink loads of Bourbon but in real life cocaine becomes a terrible taboo (and there was a third which I forgot). None of these are very good positive things but the fact is that it is morally acceptable on mainstream family programming television and condemned by false moral values in real life. I totally agree with Morgan: what Sheen does in his private life is of no concern to others. As long as he does his job and doesn´t break any contractual clauses, and brings in the money, CBS shouldn´t interfere. I do see friends and family getting involved trying to help this man and getting him out of this spiral of self-destruction, addiction and, probably, bipolar disorder.
Morgan showed great respect towards Sheen and he highly appreciated it. Sheen represented himself coherently and brought down those defensive mechanisms like trying to shock everyone. Morgan caught that in the act and that was the end of that. I can´t say I feel sorry for Sheen but I do feel some sympathy for him, and do believe he deserves a second chance. And CBS should spend more money in keeping the media away from him. He should only be on PM!
    Great intv Piers!

Not sure if Charlie is living strong ("Winning!"), or manic. He's right that he's not like everyone else. Maybe he's immune to the laws that apply to the rest of us, like "What goes around comes around", or "pride comes before the fall". I hope he is.... It must be nice to be able to give up 2 million a week to stick it to the man.

That said, why is PMT caption saying Charlie "apologizes for anti-Semitic remark"??? I heard him say that the guy calls him by his real (Latino) name, so he returned the gesture, using the man's real (Hebraic) name, but then found things "burning down around him". So, is the ADL going to action for using the man's name? Clearly, he is not anti-Semitic. He has, or had, a number of close associates that are Jewish. I think people detected his animus when saying the guy's name and confused it as being toward Jews, when it was clearly personal.

I enjoy Piers's program. But...in his interview today with Charlie Sheen, he asked all the right questions, but let CS blow him off; he did not pursue definitive answers. I feel CS shoudl have been pressed a little harder to define in non-hand-waving terms, exactly what he was saying – or not saying.

And and even better question...why didn't Piers Morgan call him on this outright lie during their interview? Morgan's research department certainly had this public record information, therefore so did he. Very, very disappointing interview full of softball questions and non-answers by Sheen. PM, I was really rooting for you, but you took your moment in the spotlight and blew it with your coddling of Mr. Sheen.

Piers first of all, thank you for the comments you made to Charlie. I think your the only one that truly cares...Charlie seems like he is in deep trouble, it is so disturbing to watch him as out of control as he is, and CBS should be held accountable for this rapid downward spiral. Obviously Charlie is a man that enjoys his extracurricular activities, he regardless of all his personal turmoil is still manages to show up to work when he has to, it is wrong for CBS to judge him on his personal life. He brings in millions and millions in revenue for them. Charlie does need to take responsibility for his actions, and that can only happen when he admits he has a problem. No change will come from denial. Please media help this man, don't push him over the edge like so many others. He is first and foremost a Human being, let's not watch him die like this....

    Piers Morgan,
Shame on you for your irresponsible condoning of Charlie Sheen's obvious manic behaviour. How could you possibly say that he seems perfectly normal? You have obviously NEVER done homework on Mental illness and knowing when to entertain someone who is COMPLETELY irrational and manic. Shame on you for entertaining his ramblings when clearly, the only place this man should be is in a psychiatric wing, receiving some much needed assistance to sort out his really confused and of course, as well, by now very much damaged brain. You need to get responsible Pierce and find out about mental illness – particularly Bi Polar and also damage due to excessive and extended use of the drugs that Sheen has been using. It would take years and years of therapy for him to be come anywhere near normalized and functioning after the extent of this use. All you have to do is punch in effects of Crystal Meth or whatever drug you want on Google to find out more information than you ever want to know. Do your homework and be responsible.

I'm glad you mentioned that it appeared Piers was condoning Charlies actions. I felt the same way. In a normal work relation issue- you don't go out in public and show such distain and disrespect for your bosses. Heck, in many businesses, you will get fired if you post something negative about your boss or company on facebook. When Piers said "why would CBS care about your personal life"- I literally jumped out of my chair and yelled "Piers, he is a celebrity, there IS NO PERSONAL LIFE". Celebrities passed up the PRIVACY claim when they earned their first million. Google "example of actors contracts" and those contracts ARE LOADED with the way the actors need to act ON and OFF the set. Why, celebrities are walking "brands". Therefore they must be on their best behavior at all times. Piers, seriously- YOU KNOW THIS. So quit trying to buddy up with a mentally distrubed actor who is ADDICTED to drugs and get the real human questions such as "Charlie, do you think you will still be alive in 5 more years"????

As a business owner myself- if I suspect any employee is using drugs, they are sent for help immediatly. There is too much risk involved to simply "turn the other cheek". I'm sure CBS feels the same way.

I agree. I felt Piers was continually stroking Sheen's ego. Believe me he does enough of that himself. His comment about the Losers was hilarious. Anyone who has to pay to have people spend time with him is not exactly what he calls himself a Winner. He is in desperate need of a reality check.I am sure all these interviews he has agreed to lately will
end in destruction for him and his career.
Piers . your interview with him only enabled him . If you really agreed with him as you let on , that leaves me with serious doubts about your character

Please everyone, Charlie is a human being, a very troubled and sick one at that. It is apparent he is on one of the worst meltdowns ever. He needs help support love and understanding. I know it's easy to judge him, he has everything we all think, rich and famous while the rest of the world is in such financial turmoil, he is out partying etc etc. But the facts are he is a man that regardless of all his personal problems, always showed up to work. His employers I'm sure have been very aware of his psychological and substance abuse problems. But have done nothing to help him, even though he is the Star of their number one financial revenue provider in their network, don't ask me why? I've never watched the show, I'm not a fan of Sheen's, but I am a fan of people and I deeply feel he needs a lot of help otherwise he will DIE.

It will never matter what the people around him want .... TRUST ME ... I know this from experience ... being around a loved one with many of these same problems ... and until he hits ROCK bottom ... he will never accept the help that he needs ...

i can't believe the ignorant comments you've allowed on this site, calling sheen bipolar shows just how jealous people are of him to say the least. on a more serious note i appreciate the fact he is aware of what i see as the only flaw on this show, the sometimes tasteless writing that clearly has no place on a family program that can easily survive on the antics of the star and supporting cast, but then again what would i know, i'm just a working man with a lovely family that makes sure mondays at 9pm are free. it is the only show we actually make time for. get back to work charlie, in case cbs didn't notice, they own the only sit com on t.v.

JFK was drugged almost the entire time he was serving as an elected official, even as President AND he screwed almost anything in a skirt! Look at any number of athletes, who have choruses of groupies they bed under the influence. I don't see you interviewing Dick Cheney about his shooting a man IN THE FACE when he was drunk as a skunk with a rifle in his hands????And, what about Charlie Chaplin, Errol Flynn, Warren Beatty, Geoge Clooney who have had flocks of female party players...WHY ARE YOU SINGLING OUT CHARLIE SHEEN???? And, look at Rush Limbaugh..I don't see you interrogating him about his ILLEGAL oxy use!! and addiction!! And, as for womanizing, I don't see you attacking John Edward as you did Charlie Sheen?? And, as for 'Two and Half Men' being a 'family' show, blame CBS. It NEVER was, not by topic, a Family show..it is an ADULT comedy. Blame Les Moonves for that, not Charlie Sheen. I am sick of the media setting up people like Charlie Sheen and others with bs and then acting like they deserve the scrutiny you are harvesting just for ratings. Ugh. Sickening. Hypocritical. YES, Charlie has partied. YES, he is a single, hot guy with female interests. YES, he has 5 children he has kept away from his PRIVATE and that's the word, PRIVATE lifestyle. End this hypocrisy. Or, shall we turn the tables and investigate all of YOUR past exploits???? Shall we give those women interviews and press??? And, money to say anything for ratings. Get real. Stop quoting 'reports' in the paper. Do your own research. The Aspen thing was thrown out...why didn't you research that before bringing it up?? That's lousy research, not worthy of Larry King's position, nor yours. Lest I set the mascara to run mode, 'Leave Charlie alone!' He's doing the best he can to undo harm and live his OWN lifestyle. I believe 'pursuit of happiness' is part of the Declaration. And, if it's not YOUR or others' pursuit mode, get over it. It's his right, as long as he keeps it legal. And, I believe, per the paper he showed you, that's he's doing his best to do that. End of rant.

Until last night's interview, I like and respected Piers. Why even bother to give a voice to an insane, misogynistic idiot. By the end of the interview, Piers was fawning over him, paralyzed by the charm that Sheen has used his entire adult life to avoid responsibility for his words and actions. Piers made a fan of me last night with his compelling interview with Charlie Sheen. I'm so sick of the whiny, sanctimonious cant of most interviewers on television, but Piers immediately got beyond that and drove to the fundamental question of whether a family-based show can withstand the rough publicity Sheen generates, and thence to questions that elicited some genuinely interesting insights into the way Sheen sees the world and how he relates to it. Nice work, Piers, and best of luck with the new gig.

Comical and talented surely have their place, but I overall look at it in this manner. Do you think his mother would be proud of his actions? How about if you learned that your daughter was dating a person exactly like Charlie Sheen? Are you going to be fine with that? Celebrity status for whatever reason, makes a lot of things ok.

Interesting to see CBS makes a show about a disfunctionial family,a man who drinks like a fish all hours of the day ,sleeps with every women in a shirt and it becomes a top show making them a pile of money but when the star buys into the concept and starts living it they object. just saying! Charlie" brain is defently affected now and it is very sad but the whole moral responsability of immoral show is that people think it's the norm right?

Piers is a celebrity suck up. Charlie Sheen is an abuser of women and drugs. It is pathetic how people fawn over him because he is famous. If he was a guy in a trailer park no one would give him a second thought and if they did they would just think he was just trash. Acting is a refined form of lying and it is entertaining when they do it on screen but off screen it is still considered lying. Do any of you really think he isn't hurting anyone when he has been arrested so many times and he has children to take care of. People blame their parents for all their woes anyway but in this case I think they have good cause.

I think we would all be suprised at the number of highly functioning addicts in American society. Hope Charlie takes care of himself. Must say I did not think his comment was anti-semetic ! Why does someone with a Jewish name or Latino name change it in show business? Same reason no doubt! If we humans could deal with each other without our EGOS anything could be possible. I hope TWO and one half Men continues because it is entertaining, PERIOD.

Piers let just say I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt. I'm Assuming CNN is holding you back from doing you job. If that's the case this message is for CNN. What's the point of even having a talk show like this. Larry King spoke his mind and you allowed it.
Since when is CNN upset about upsetting you guests. Is it just because you want to stretch out the story. If that is the case you are messing with people lives and their families.

Bravo Paul & Ralph. I agree with you both 1,000 percent. Quit drinking because I 'chose' to despite relatives declaring I would never be able to because it was "heriditary" . Cold turkeyed a pack a day for 30 years smoking habit because I chose to just a few months ago (talk about a hellish experience). What made me think I could try one more time? What made me feel and believe I really could? Hearing info from two reknowned brain doctors regarding the actual science realities of how we can indeed change our brains and lives! For all who feel angry at these types of testimonies we're sharing I ask only that if you too are battling addicitons you are convinced you cannot overcome.....please give to yourselves a huge blessing present by listening to a Dr. Daniel Amen "Change Your Brain Change Your Life" and a Dr. Carolyn Leaf "Who Switched Off My Brain". Both these doctors have hearts as big as the Himalyas for people realizing that we are tri-part beings (Body Soul Spirit)....and that all these facets of us need to be healthy healed whole and in balance. I gave AA a try years ago. Was so repulsed but mostly frightened I would end up believing I was an irreversible loser for the rest of my life. No thank you very much. To this day....I can have a couple of drinks every once in a while and stop! At first viewing Charlie's rantings and ravings was funnier than the dickens as I wondered if he was just playing a big game with the public. Now I hope we'll all choose to pray 'for' Mr. Sheen that the Holy Spirit will convict his heart to 'want' to stop being arrogant, beligerant rebellious. He needs to be able and desireous of humbling himself to seek help from those who truly care during the weeks and months ahead.

Couldn't agree more! We are only victims of our own minds – but not many will ever believe it unless they have a personal experience of it, because we have all these crazy backwards inverted ideas about what it is that runs our lives.
    love to you all

Paul, I am your carbon copy. I had problem with alcohol and for several years a procrastinated the quitting. One day 20 years ago I decided "this is it". Alcohol is nonexistent for me. I didn't need the $15,000 program, I just quit. It was easier then I thought. I don't miss it.

Mind over Matter! Simple resolution. Sit back and think about that. You are doing something you hate...Just stop! Now others will say it's harder than you think...well that's because you don't want to stop bad enough. You're weak. Everyone has their addictions...very easy to stop.

@paul, you have nailed your point. i've never thought that a comment can make a stronger impact than the interview itself. it's so true. i can only say AA – absolute amen.

Anyone who has survived a physically abusive relationship knows that the abuser is often perceived as Mr. Mellow and "such a nice guy" to everyone else, even close family members and friends who insist they know him. They know what they are allowed to see; Charlie Sheen would appear to be a classic. You'll notice in the video that he quickly turned the focus on to what the victim did to him, instead of facing that his own behavior had become unmanagable and that he hurt someone, in more ways than one.

I want to hear some honesty from him, but that would require hearing and seeing himself as he is.

Paul, I agree. I quit smoking after 12 years. I have been smoke free since 1997. A family member of mine did coke for 10 years and just stopped never to touch it again.

How can anyone watch Sheen fidget, squirm and blather on at 3 times the normal speed while his brain tries to catch up with his mouth...AND THEN DEFEND his ability to ward off drugs and alcohol?!? He's clearly got more snow up his nose than an Alpine ski instructor. By the way, very heroine chic look ya got there Chuck...WINNING...DUH!!!

At 2:48 sec Alex Jones says that Charlie Sheen admitted to him in LA that it was wrong his elyistfle etc. Now, Charlie is flipping out publicly and saying he is living a life that other people wish they could live etc., trashing AA, so Charlie knows that his partying ways are the wrong ways. I was really surprised that Alex Jones was associated with Charlie which would cut his credibility with listeners considerably.

Violence against women is a growing issue in the U.S. There are excellent organizations working to help young women in need. Vista Maria is a leading crusader to curtail violence against women. They are an excellent resource and can be very helpful for young women dealing with these issues.

We all need support, and like to feel in power. Women sadly face more brutal language and criticism that eventually can lead to strong mental AND physical abuse. Vista Maria is a leading crusader to curtail violence against women. They are an excellent resource and can be very helpful for young women dealing with these issues.
