Barry Manilow shares his secret to coming up with hit songs

Tonight Barry Manilow opens up to Piers Morgan (and a large audience of 'Fanilows') to talk greatest hits, the price of fame, and a lot more. Manilow told Piers one song he loves to play is "Can't Smile Without You." "They love it and I love it too," he says. How does Manilow come up with his hit songs? "When I’m walking around," he says. "That means, if I remember them a couple of hours later that means I got it."

Catch the full entertaining interview tonight at 9pm ET/PT.

OMG It is such a sad situation for Barry. The poor man has become a laughing stock to look at. My God Barry you look awful, to put it nicely. Your face moves about as much as Joan Riverd. What a shame what you have done to yourself.

Thank you to Barry Manilow for the wonderful original music and lyrics again, and I so agree the songs I love the best are not always the huge hits but the songs on the albums you didn't here on the radio, Lay me down, Somethings coming up, Studio musician , The room and Sweet life and so many more. Thank you Barry and thank you for doing this new album it was sad to think I might not have had another opportunity to experience your wonderful music and lyrics, and I hope you continue to make more of your own music for all of us cherish for years to come. thanks for having Barry Manilow on the show tonight. We first saw him when he was playing piano for Bette Midler. That was at a show in Columbia, Maryland, many years ago. Barry had not yet become a star. At the break, while Bette Midler was resting, Barry went center stage and played the piano. You could tell he was going to be a big star! I've been a fan for many years. Stay healthy, keep singing. Thank you, Joel

Read the liner notes to his new CD – he comes out very clearly if you're open enough to see it!
Plus, it's his choice....... as he said in the interview he's a gentleman – he's not gonna talk about his private life.

Isn't it sad that we live in a culture where the pressure to defy ageing forces people to undergo debilitating surgeries in order to continue to work!!!

Been a Manilow fan since I first heard "Mandy" on the radio in the 70's. I just got Barry's new C.D. Love it! It arrived on my birthday (which is also Barry's birthday).I can't believe I missed this airing of your show Piers. friends were telling me that this episode would air on the 17th. It didn't however. I hope it will be re-aired in the near future. Let me say this if you people don't have anything nice to say about Barry, keep your comments to yourself. Didn't your mom's teach your any manners?

The guy was either in a bad accent or had horrible plastic surgery. Hard to watch and he can barely move his mouth. Was he in some sort of an accent over the past few years?

Barry is the music of my life. His music has gotten me through nightmares in my life and I've come "shining through".

Loved what he said about Bagel – I understand that closeness and heartbreak............. dogs are the best!

He's best friends with Suzanne Sommers and she talked him into that horrid stem cell injection of the face...they both are so terribly swollen looking...Barry sounds like he can't speak....his eyes are pulled down too...it just a shame, he was looking fine and so was Suzanne...maybe it will de-puff...ugggghhh....can't even concentrate on the music with that froggy tight lipped speaking voice...the perils of fame...you shouldn't (can't) talk Barry...and I liked you.

Piers you are doing a great job. I watch you, when Larry King drove me crazy as he was always jamming too many guests on the same nights, and then brushed them all off to meet his timeline,,I found that very uncomfortable to watch. Barry is a very sweet and real gentleman who has written beautiful timeless music. Thanks for bringing him on Piers.

Wasn't sure if you'd be the right one for this show Pierce, but i LOVE your show, and living in the UAE,it's one of the highlights! HOwever, as much as I love Barry Manilow, am surprised you didn't question him on his plastic surgery. You're always in your guests face, however, you seemed to ignore that part of it, which is important in the sense that he's probably had some shady doctors. I grew up (well early 20;s) listening to Barry and one thing I loved about him was the way he interacted so naturally with his audience, too bad his own self image was lacking for him to have done this to his face. I just think it would have been interesting..so, u didn't want to embarrass him? Why did you hold back. Love your show!

Piers, I enjoy your show enormously and I find that you are always well tuned in with your guests of whatever extraction they are. You come across as a gentleman. True that two days in a row with the Ryans was a bit much.. one or the other would've been fine but they pretty much cancelled each other out both losing credibility. Sometimes show business just seems such a sad world. Anyway, I look forward to your shows and my cat looks forward to me sitting down so keep looking for interesting questions. Jane, Italy

    Dear Piers,
I don't know any other way to contact you. I first became aware of you on BGT (Susan Boyle's first audition). Then somehow on AGT last summer (and found myself impressed with you and in agreement most of the time). Last night (when the audience requested a song, BM), it was one that has always seemed to me to be inspired by the slow movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony (maybe he dreamed it). As you have no doubt guessed, iIam a musician of more than 50 yr's experience who enjoys different types of music. And yes, I have studied privately with 1 Brit, and Master Classes with 2 others. Although classically trained, I have a lot of respect for Elton John. Love (all) of your shows and appearances (because of your standards). would love to see E.J. on sometime.

I don't know how to contact you either.
When will you interview Keith Weissman ? This man is honest and truthful and has plenty to say. Free media will help us all on earth not just one chosen group.

Barry Manilow looked like a large mask at Disneyworld. It was scary to look at him. Did they build that face from putty and clay....or Lord forbid did a plastic surgeon do that to a 71 year old man.
I was so sorry to see him like that and I couldn't take him seriously.......Sorry. It was like a nightmare.

Didn't your parents ever teach you "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"...yes, we all know Barry has had surgery done, if you were still making music and performing, I'm sure you would too, he is 68 years young. It's the person inside and out, that makes them special. I hope you can admit after all this time, all the concerts he's given us, all the songs, and the dedication he has given to his fans, he's the real deal. What you see is what you get...a man who just loves doing what he does best, making music and doing a hell of a good job, doing it. If you close your eyes and listen to his "one voice", I think your heart will "feel" what his music is all about.

If when he is not on stage his private life is for him to know and nobody else. leave him alone and just enjoys his music. I will always be a fan

I will to my dying day love listening to Barry Manilow music. This guy is a genius and legend in his own time. I love it when great musicians put out music for the public. We have so much crap out there by non-talented people. Barry Manilow music never lets you down. And I absolutely love his new original concept album, "15 Minutes". I keep listening to it over and over again.! You must get it!
