Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West discuss the reaction to Obama criticism inside the African American community

Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West were guests last night on "Piers Morgan Tonight," and talked about President Barack Obama. "I supported my dear brother Barack Obama because I wanted to bring an end to the age of Reagan," West told Piers Morgan. "When he moves into office, what do we get? We get his economic team coming straight out of Wall Street."

Smiley talked about criticism of Obama critique from other African Americans. "Inside of our own community you end up being a sort of pariah," he said. "Why is what I say versus what my white progressive friends say any different?" The duo also announced a 15-city Poverty Tour (find out more information here).

Travis smiley is much like Donald Trump in that they are both populists who talk a good talk & are very good at critiquing. However both Travis Smiley & Donald Trump come across as good motivational speakers. They seek to find simple answers to very, very complex issues, that is the danger with both men. Piers if you really want answers regarding very complex issues facing the nation – then self promoters such as West, Smiley & Trump are the wrong people to be talking to. Now that's not to say that they don't raise valid issues – it's just that they're not experts. As a matter of fact it was not lost on this viewer how Mr. Smiley got bruised and battered when you pushed him on how he would go about mending the current situation. He came back to the only card he had which was that this was not the time to be holding deficit reduction talks – I have to say he was clearly wrong on that. I was watching this with a few people in the room last night & we all had to laugh at that. When pressed not only didn't he have the answer however his confidence was clearly shaken for the first time & the tremor evident in his hand right as you cut for a commercial did not escape my attention. Smiley talks a great talk, but where is the beef. Touring American is fine – but that isn't going to solve any problems. A big part of the solution comes down to taking steps that will prevent another financial melt down. That will require tough legislation & oversight – will the bankers permit that to happen. Also the Republican leadership as it currently stands are not politicos they're obstructionists – somewhere down the line that could lead to a civil conflict.

You anti West/Smiley folk need to go back to school to learn critical thinking skills, Short cuts don't work! Cornel West and Mr Smiley represent the best catalyst in a long, long time, if ever, to get this country away from blowing its' self to hell in a hand cart. We are in for a loooooooong winter, if not.

Americans are still committed to the dream of unlimited abundance as a “reasonable” goal, when in reality, it is the dream of an addict.

Stop the silliness and listen and learn to people than are not white (like me) and filled with hate and

If Tavis and West feel they are unfairly maligned then the question would be how do they think the President should feel. I never heard that much from them during Clinton and Bush's era so why are they so strident. Obama is the President of all Americans; so his policies would be on that basis the poor would always benefit from the improvement in the economy....meaning more jobs. If they are privy to what Obama inherited they should be more understanding but I guess not..insofar as it keeps them in the public eye it is better for them. Self serving indeed.

Obama was elected the President but both West and Tavis believe he should do things their way.
My suggestion to them is to run for the Presidency themselves then they can do things their way.

Tavis was busy trying to make an issue about Obama rallying cry to Congressional delegates to fight harder; the elected officials liked what Obama said and but Tavis thought it was offensive but Ms. Jackson Lee thought otherwise and correctly reminded Tavis of the Civil Rights call to arms and that what Obama was doing. Why wouldn't Tavis know that?
This tells me and should tell everyone that their beef with Obama is not on principles but on personal grounds and that's a shame....... Having placed themselves in this situation they have no choice but to continue with their fool hardiness.

“Why the security is tight on Muslim names in USA”It is not a qusotien of famous Indian Icon being screened at the airport. Things as they are of the terror world belong predominantly to the Muslim world.Prior to terrorism making its step into life, Muslim religion on the whole was perceived to be seen of its inherent religious loyalty of oneness. Now, (religious loyalty is different from secular loyalty in the sense that religious loyalty stays imprisoned as passion of a religion whereas Secular truly speaking accepts the oneness of all religions; rather is supposed to accept as such but in today’s world cannot be seen as such wholly because of the religious dividing lines alive with individual basic loyalties and amongst those, Muslim is one religion that inherently remains aligned within the self from within of its separate class from others and therefore security norms have even come to apply on the secular category of Muslims overpowering the secular sense they come to project as moderators)? The reason for that obviously is the age old sense of Muslim brotherhood belonging to the cult of privacy or the personal law of religion whereas other religions by and large are guided by norms and not laws that makes them subtle to the core in oneness? This qusotien mark should ring all the wise and others because that is the thin line dividing laws and norms. Therefore, where Americans predominately look at “from their security angle”, they inherently go through the channel of Muslim personal law of oneness not of its moderation but of subtlety that they think has brought terrorism of a blind nature into life. In other words, for the security persons on the job they just go by the security norms meant for such a probe to search that element in a Muslim that is of basic loyalty only meant for Muslims and that is where their routine starts of the nature independent even on the name of a famous celebrity to protect their rule of basic security law. At this stage American government has not relaxed such a law with exceptions and that is a thing pertaining to the house of their independent psyche on it remaining reactionary of reactions by others for whom that appears like a dilemma out of the blues – why not because security perceptions of different countries have their own models in play and those cannot be equated under a universal sense because each country’s horizon for it remains in a blank filled with feeds for their employment either with absolute strictness or with some moderation at times depending upon the angles of security where even zero plus security angle comes into the picture to avoid security lapse of the nature that America’s 9/11 has already witnessed. I think India’s Khan with his good intelligence base has understood that and that is why he has not insisted on the word “sorry” and has accepted himself in routine without any kind of ill feeling on it. However, a point of reference in this context that can be made is “while it is true that total security clearance cannot be given at the level of the grant of visa because departure and landing of a passenger in journey or transit are not covered under the security angle of the country concerned, a via media of it can certainly be evolved to maintain the dignity and honor of the passenger as is the case in reference and also for other known dignitaries who are public figures of repute or who have been as such known where name alone should not reflect as scar on a community. I am sure American intelligence would pick up this idea at a human level without even involving Ministerial views at the diplomatic level of the countries. “A good taste is always better than what leaves behind quiet bitterness”. Amitab Bachan, I am sure would appreciate the last line to speak his own volume as the social reformer for his good friend Khan who already seems hurt with a void that was beyond his ethical imagination just because Khan’s heart speaks and flows for others with all the love he gives and also expects the invisibility of love of others keep filling into him. That is the personality of a smiling sha-rukh Khan meaning “rukh” (ways or directions) for all in the class of celebrities and for the masses that he carries for himself.

I would like to tell Tavis Smiley that, while I admire him for everything he is and does, he should be ashamed of his remarks about President Obama. Tavis thinks the President should run the country Tavis' way, while he's only one man – doing an amazing job against all odds. The Republicans don't cut him a break – and now Tavis doesn't either. Why do the Americans who most favor smaller government constantly gripe about what the government ISN'T doing? It's each of our responsibility to help make our country better – and I see that Tavis and Cornel are about to do just that...go out and talk to the people. But when they talk to the people, they should tell them what ALL AMERICANS can do to make the country better – NOT tell them what the President isn't doing. Nobody wants to go down in history as a great president more than Barack Obama. Get a clue, people. He's trying to save the underdogs – even if he doesn't refer to them as "poor". Tavis, you can call us/them anything you want – but you should tend to your own back yard and leave President Obama's alone. He's growing roses (not weeds) as fast as he can.

Mary well said. Tavis and West can not do what Obama has done and that's to assure every American that they can truly grow up and become President if that's what they want . Parents have said those words without much conviction. Everyone believed white young boys can become President but not girls or boys of any other race. With Obama Presidency everyone can truly aspire to be president because of Obama's accomplishment. Whatever West and Tavis contributions are can never match this simple feat by Obama.
What is West/Tavis true contribution.... feeding red meat to the racist in our society. No one is saying you can not take issue with Obama's agenda; but it seems that they are just a bunch of cry babies yelping for attention. Where were they in the previous adminstrations and were they this strident? If they are really for the POOR they should start talking about jobs bill that Obama has proposed and get people to call their representatives to pass the bill asap. Those who are unemployed stand a chance of having their benefits extended for another year. Will they do this I am sure they will not.

Obama saved the economy from imploding; now it's up to the companies to do their part....hire people but they are not. West/Tavis should be asking these companies why aren't they hiring instead of finding faults with every thing the President does or says.

I disagree with her etstament that people don't want to do the morality thing. I think more people out there see it as their responsibility to help others. The trick is identifying the right niche and sticking to that area. I have to consciously decided between volunteering or donating to one cause or another. Something has to guide that decision for each person, just like it does for me. I believe that is where holding relentlessly to purpose comes in. As an individual you identify what causes you are willing to sacrifice for and those are the ones you focus on. The more I work towards applying that philosophy in my civic, personal, and professional life the more I see accomplished in all realms.

There should be more people like Piers and Smiley in the Media today, who know what is going on, know how to ask the right questions and most importantly answer straigh forward, good old fashion journalism, which is a rarity today. wish more people would ask mind provoking questions and make the public to see and connect the dots,

I only watched the last ten minutes of the show and was moved by the passion, credibility and hard questions asked by Piers as well as the tough love replies by Cornel West and Travis Smiley. I intend to followtheir Blog and participate to the best of my ability. My sole suggestion is to please include the millions of truly disabled Americans living below the poverty limit. All too often the disabled are overlooked, forgotten, invisible and voicelss. Providing a platform for poverty must include disabled Americans, Thank you.

I supported the president and I voted for him, but I agree with Mr. Smiley and Mr. West on this one. I am terribly disappointed in the President and the way he has allowed the republicans to run and ruin everything for the working class in which many black people belong. You only have to look at the evidence. Many black people who took offence don't bother to vote during the mid term or local elections. I know this for a fact because I asked several during the mid terms and they had no idea who was even running. Now we have a tea partier as our representative. We must be moe active and more vocal and do what the president himself requested that we do and that is to hold him accountable. I am a union member and a life long democrat and if the election were today I might sit it out and not vote for Obama again. He caves to the republicans time and time again so what difference does it make.

I absolutely agree with Dr. West and Smiley, as a 32 year old African American woman with a B.S., part of the working class with a son who has 4.285 gpa I am poor. I make 25k per year, I've never been arrested and I never compromise on morals and values, why can't I make enough to buy a home? Why can't I allow my African American son to go to the store after dark even though he is sixteen years old? I'm not a drug user, I am an upstanding citizen who is in constant fear that I could lose my son, a good kid, and not even be able to afford to bury him. I want the same opportunities afforded to me and my family that my white peers are offered. My friend and I shared the same major, equal amount of years of experience, we both have strong work ethic, but I work under her supervision, and I'm forced to work 3 times harder, longer and more often. President Obama has let me down in a sense of making me feel that I matter to the United States Government and fellow citizens. I hoped that Obama would give me faith and trust in my government and country, something I've never had the pleasure of feeling. I hoped that he would restore my feelings of doing right and living right will pay off. How can i continue to look my children in the eyes and say work hard, stay out of trouble and you will find success when I don't feel that its an obtainable realistic goal anymore. I'm not looking for pity, easy fortune, welfare, food stamps or any handouts. I'm looking for the values that this country was supposedly founded upon, hard work pays off.

The problem with the Cornel and the Travis show is very simple they are members ofnthe magic wand concept of gov. this is pure fantacy and idealitic thinking. I'm sure both men have honorable intensions, you cannot expect these miracle wand wavinmg ideals to tke root overnight We had 8 years of Bush-wack presidency . Now Travis and Dr. West expect this instantaneous about face by Obama in the creation of jobs and walking on water. I know many of us figure we have a Black president, and proceeded to make unresonable demands,it's simply absurd to think Obama could do these things in 2 yrs. In the short period of time Obama has bene president he's had monumental and historic pieces of legislation passed,no president in the history of the country has accomplished this. These 2 gentlemen should rethink their public arguments and just give President Obama some more time, after all Buhs got 8 yrs ,Obama needs 6 more .

It is unfortunate that these gentleman prefer to continue the onslaughter of the President. Yes! he is not perfect and yes! some of his promise have not been met yet, but, he is trying and his party is not even backing him. The republicans, this party-ot Tea-ers, and the racist have pulled out an all war attack of this "President". Now I would expect these two to fight against that, the out and out racism being displayed by those folks. He is not the president of the black, poor and downtrowden, he is the "President" of the whole united States. This country was in deep trouble, trouble that not one black, poor, middle/lower citizen created, however it had to be saved most people do understand that. He fought tooth and nail to try and fix that problem now give him a chance to continue on. It is like these guys are saying he made no accomplishments for the poor and others, where last I checked there are a few things he was able to accomplish. (LOOK IT UP!!). The attack against the poor, middle, and lower class citizen is real. The republicans, this party_of tea-ers, the rich, and big business are relentless in their assault this is not the time to confuse the people anymore then they already are with your comments. Why are these two trying to turn the people towards a path thats not good or helpful to them. This is the same tactic the so called party or tea-ers used to win in the last elections, tactics odf confusion, distraction, lies, etc.... Why have these two decided to rear their ugly heads at this time. We cannot afford to lost these coming elections to these type of people, the poor, middle, and lower class citizen should really watch out then.. You guys have your greivances rightfully so, but PLEASE!!! PLEASE!! stop with the distraction, fight against the abuse, and racism of this "President" now, and get in his BUTT!! after he wins again and still don't fight for the pooor, middle, and lower class citizen.

Tavis and West both feel disrespected one way or the other; so the are lashing out is the only way they know how to strike back..... What has Obama done in the three years: 1 save the economy from imploding; 2. got us a National Healthcare; 3. appointed several minorities to the Federal bench; 4. secured a 2 years unemployment benefit, working hard to make it 3 years etc, etc....The plight of Americans poor can not be solved when the economy is in shambles. The lideral left felels he should have done more in the first two and so they sat out mid-term election and now they Tea Party members making life impossible for all. One would think that it would give you two reason to fight a different battle namely rail against the Wall Street...... Some else is doing that. The President does not create jobs corporations do and so you should be shouting at the Banks and Wall Street, NOT the President. This the Crab M.. that I have heard of pure and simple.

Give me a break, Tavis and Dr. West. Indeed where were you during Bush years? The issues of today are direct results of Bush years of party alliance, Wall street greed and Republican's recklessness in governing. The president inherented an economy close to a colapse. Dr. West I have always admire your position on equality issues and racism, but I must say, "I am appaled on your agenda against this president." The first black president, with all that he is doing, and you attack him this way? Do you see the opposition directed at him? Do you here the name calling? Do you realize they want to strip off all benefits of social nature? In two years President Obama has accomplished a lot. Stand up and speak out for the social injustice going on and direct it to the right source. Our America is for all of us including the president and therefore daunting to characterise his efforts are for Wall Street. Where were you when the financial bailouts were going on? As matter of fact, the housing modification have helped thousands to keep their homes. The thing that gets me, it has only been 3 years and you expect a generation problem to be solved by this president? The Tea party and the Republicans are fueling a devisiveness in America today never seen in a long time. Why? Tavis and Dr. West I believe you need to change your 'Cause'. This is America, we are hard working and ultimately can do anything when we put our minds to it. Not compromising to solve the deficit and trying to make the president a "one term president" is not a government solution when millions out there are suffering.

Thank you for this very poignant and snirece message for me to wake-up and put my actions where I say my heart is. I have just recently interviewed and have been accepted to the next training class of CASA Forsyth in Georgia. As I look forward to training to begin on next Thursday, I have been thinking about what exactly is my commitment to the children I am going to represent in my service as a CASA. I thought this through for a long time. At the end, what I have determined about my commitment is that I am standing for the gold . I am an advocate for the end of childabuse in the world. I can stand for that. And for that it means alot to me to have read the above article. I got real clear of the accountability I am under-taking when I have taken an oath to be the voice for the children who have been abused.I also see and know personally the impact that childabuse has on a human being (or any creature). I am serving as the Co-Facilitatot for a self-help support group called ASCA-Atlanta. ASCA is Adult Survivors of Child Abuse . It's nation-wide. I was instrumental in bring this group to Georgia because I saw a need for these Meetings everywhere in the world. The healing process and support that is given in this group is tremendous; and go along way to giving a life that eventually thrives. But we, the adult survivors know the possible life-long impact that childabuse leaves in our lives. So I am committed to the prevention of childabuse. And I am an advocate for children in the court systems. I am for the healing of children everywhere that have been abuse and/or neglected. I have been further inspired by this article because it has me looking at how I balance my life and my priorities so that as I serve as a CASA, I am at the utmost in my pledged duty. I am moved into action.Thank you.Fire

I mean, I know it was my choice to read, however I truly thought youd have one thing fascinating to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about one thing that you could possibly repair if you happen to werent too busy searching for attention.
