Need to Know News: Obama and Boehner square off in payroll tax fight while Obama's poll numbers rise

Each day, we here at "Piers Morgan Tonight" put together the news you need to know – from what happened last night to what will happen today.

For December 21, 2011 -President Barack Obama and John Boehner square off in payroll tax fight, Obama's poll numbers are rising and more snow is expected in parts of the West...

• Obama, Boehner square off in payroll tax fight: "The congressional impasse over extending the payroll tax cut became a showdown Tuesday between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner. After the Republican-controlled House passed a measure calling for more negotiations, Boehner made public a letter to Obama that urged him to order the Senate back from its holiday break to take part in further talks."

• Obama's poll numbers are rising: "The gridlock and partisanship that threatens to ruin Christmas in Washington could be an election year gift for President Barack Obama's campaign. A growing number of voters , 50% compared to 44% in March, trust Obama to solve the nation's problems while the percentage of those with faith in congressional Republicans is slipping, according to a CNN/ORC International Poll."

Heavy snow threatens parts of West: "A blizzard that roared through much of the southern Rockies and central Plains tapered off Wednesday, but several states were still expected to deal with heavy snow. Winter weather watches, warnings and advisories were in effect Wednesday for much of the West, according to the National Weather Service."

• Defense begins in Manning leaks hearing: "After four days of testimony and 20 prosecution witnesses, PFC Bradley Manning's attorneys began calling people Wednesday to testify in his defense. Manning's Article 32 hearing is part of the military's process of determining whether he should face court martial and on which charges, if any."

Hugh Hefner had 'mixed emotions' about Lohan doing Playboy: "Hugh Hefner believes Lindsay Lohan's Marilyn Monroe-themed Playboy pictorial will be a keepsake - but the media mogul admits he initially had doubts about featuring the embattled actress on its cover."

Having watched Piers Morgan's appearance at the Leveson committee, I think he should resign fom CNN. CNN has no room from this kind of utterly unethical 'journalist'.

Extending the payroll tax cut would be a big mistake. Many economists including Bruce Bartlett agree that it is not the best thing for our economy. http://eng.am/qu39cL

The biggest problem with the payroll tax cut is that it is not targeted to those with the most need. Yes, people with relatively low income will spend their extra money, but wealthy people who would also receive the tax cut will just save their money. http://eng.am/uvIDMJ

Also, promoting continued reduced payment into Social Security is the same as telling people it’s a good idea to borrow from their retirement and spend the money now. http://eng.am/tfw4BN

Partisan Politics might make extending the payroll tax cut the only option to spur consumer spending, but it doesn’t make it the most effective option.

The KEY here, (whether or not you agree with reducing Social Security taxes) is that the republicans insist on tying an OIL PIPELINE to a tax break. These two things have nothing in common and it is simply a ransom the republicans have demanded to let poor people out of their grip for a little while. They will be back for more so there's no need to capitulate.

I know that payroll tax cuts usually work. I know that the 911 war beginning pointed back to me/my life in Buffalo as well. I was amnesiac back then & was wondering if there was ever a line for the Buffalonians, that were affected by alqaida 6 out of Lackawanna & the Launderer or no. 7 and a place for them to go... a place for their help or job or job replacement? I was amnesiac, in part, due to a drug by what the govt has informally said was done by Kadafi's doctors around in the same area & before the mortgage FannieMae NYState law/guideline changes and that is how long it took me? It is something to consider, perhaps, in addition to just the ol' tax cut in payroll expenses for employers.
