Gloria Allred files lawsuit against Starwood Hotels for sexual assault on her client

New York investment banker Alison Fournier filed suit against Starwood Hotels over a sexual assault she says happened in last January in Helsinki, Finland in the Hotel Kamp. Fournier, then age 30, was asleep in her locked hotel room when an intoxicated man told the front desk he was her husband, got a key to her room and climbed into her bed. She awoke to find him "groping at her naked body" and "she was certain she was about to be raped." Fournier managed to jump out of the bed, grab a bathrobe and escape.

The assailant received the key without any “basic security protocols, such as asking for identification, searching hotel records to see whether Ms. Fournier was registered alone or with a traveling companion, or calling her room to check the man’s story, the desk clerk simply handed the man Ms. Fournier’s room key allowing him to gain access to her room,” according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed by Fournier's attorney Gloria Allred.

Allred has represented many clients in high profile situations including Tiger Woods' alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel, Herman Cain's first accuser to come forward Sharon Bialek and many more. Fournier is Allred's latest client. Allred will be on "Piers Morgan Tonight" this month for a full hour to discuss how she decides which clients to represent and the high profile cases that have made her famous in both the legal community and popular culture.

Fournier has sued the hotel chain for “negligence and negligent infliction of emotional distress” and is “seeking compensatory and punitive damages, claiming that her “life has been turned upside down as a result”. Before the incident, Fournier, a Princeton University graduate and Harvard Business School MBA, was a Vice President at a prestigious New York investment banking firm. Since the assault Fournier has quit her job and has relocated to Florida.

In January 2011, Fournier traveled to Helsinki, Finland on her first overseas business trip and specifically registered at Hotel Kamp because of its affiliation with the Starwood hotel chain. “Ms. Fournier checked on-line to confirm that she would be staying at a Starwood Hotel because she believed that the Starwood name would insure that the hotel was both safe and top tier,” said Allred at a press conference Monday afternoon.

Fournier spoke out publicly in hopes to warn other women who may be traveling alone of the danger that they may face: “I don’t want this to happen again to any woman traveling for her career," she said. "Business travel is often a critical part of a successful career and women should not have to fear traveling or wonder if they will be targets of violence when they are staying alone in a hotel.”

We reached out to Starwood Hotels for a comment. Their full statement is below:

The safety and security of our guests is our first and foremost priority. It is company-wide policy to ensure proper identification is shown and verified before distributing a key to a registered guest’s room. We are taking this allegation seriously and are working with the hotel in question to understand the facts and any breach of security that may have contributed to this very unfortunate event.

The Sheritan in San Diego, "Starwood", gave me my key as I checked in, only to find out that someone else was occupping that room. I didn't have that horrible of an experience, but was downgraded in rooms, it was filthy and was way over-charged. These people are extremely unruly to deal with. I am not getting anywhere with them, except a large phone and room bill. Kathy Bonebreak

I stay in hotel rooms around the world maybe four days a week. Ive intruded on other people and theyve intruded on me perhaps a dozen times because of genuine mix ups, and I accept that thats a hazard with programmable hotel key cards and desk staff shift changes. Thats why I use the deadbolt and the latch, both of which I assume this hotel had provided for each room. What I want to know is how did this woman lose her job, is she bankrupt or deep in debt and why has it taken this long.

Andrea Apuy this sure is a long blog and posed photo

Don't know what happened or not to pass judgement.
Bad times and bankruptcy is getting the worst in all.
Princeton University,Harvard Business School or being President at a prestigious New York investment banking firm unfortunately does not protect one from greedy lawyers or spilling your guts in public and be on CNN? There are millions of innocent victims of war with horrendous stories that are silenced by pathetic media coverage and or media gag. I truly wish Andrea Apuy found one women's story each day from Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and other places where our tax dollars are used in bombing or in landmines. This was no accident mix up or poor staffing or drunk men when you are victim and EVIL foreign policies. It is sad what took place but Fournier is a fortunate woman she has a great education, looks behind her, she is rich and can get her story out in CNN and has ,found a rich lawyer is able to sue for millions and seek the best of mental health providers the women and children who are war victims have absolutely nothing. Will Gloria Allerd defend the poor war victims?

Gloria Allred is a "hack". She is right up there with Nancy Pelosi. I am sure they would get along well.

Dammit Mark. I wish I had even a scintilla of repcest and hope for ANY cable news network, then maybe I'd be able to work up some outrage and/or energy. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and admire your diligence, but I fear it's a lost cause, like showing the Pope why pedophilia is a crime even if the pedophile is a priest.

I was trying to frguie out what I could write on our blog today when I suddenly thought, why not let everyone know about how yesterday went , which is exactly what I am doing now that I have one kid in bed and another quietly playing! Yesterday was a blast!!! Marie-The9re8se and I baked the cake for Mary (my mom's chocolate snacking cake with really light chocolate icing!) and had a great time. Marie-The9re8se kept saying gateau pour Marie (translated cake for Mary ). I tried to explain to her that we were celebrating Mary's birthday as best I could while I measured out all the ingredients and she poured them into the bowl. Marie-The9re8se was also my official stirrer with her mini-whisk. When we were done making the cake, we prepared for supper by setting the table with a nice tablecloth, an icon of St. Anne holding Mary as a child, two candles on either side of the icon, and our chocolate cake beside one of the candles. When we were done supper (guess who ate all of her carrots!), Vince suggested we sing for Marie, and without skipping a beat, Marie-The9re8se starting singing Happy Birthday to Mary! I was amazing, and still am at how she got it!! Even today she told my mom on the phone how she sang Bonne Feate Marie . It is quite amazing how God can work through a cake, a little explanation, a little celebration, and a lot of fun to bring across His message to a 3 year old!
