For March 16, 2012 – New iPad hits stores, more details emerge about soldier accused in Afghan killings, and Southern Mississippi issues apology for band's derogatory chant at NCAA tournament...

New iPad hits stores: "Apple rolled out a high-definition iPad on Wednesday with a faster processor, a better camera and a display screen that promises to be dramatically sharper than the current model, the iPad 2. The new 9.7-inch display screen will feature a 'retina display' of 2047 by 1536 pixels, compared with the current model's 1024 by 768 pixels."

• More details emerge about soldier accused in Afghan killings: "The American staff sergeant accused of a house-to-house rampage that left 16 Afghan civilians dead was deployed to a small outpost where someone was wounded the day before the shootings, an attorney for the soldier said. 'We have been informed at this small base that he was at, somebody was gravely injured the day before the alleged incident ... which affected all of the soldiers,' said John Henry Browne, who told CNN on Thursday he was representing the accused soldier."

• Mississippi lawmakers pass controversial immigration bill: "Another controversial immigration bill is on the horizon in the South, a regional battleground that has seen a number of states pass reforms on illegal immigration. Mississippi's Republican-dominated House of Representatives voted 70-47 Thursday to pass the -Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhood Act.'"

Windows 8 is a 'game changer': "As PC sales slump amid a surge in tablets (okay, iPads), Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) is creating an operating system that lets hardware makers reimagine the PC for a tablet world. The software is slated to go on sale later this year."

• Southern Miss issues apology for band's derogatory chant at NCAA tournament: "A university president apologized after members of a school's band yelled 'where's your green card' at a Hispanic player during a NCAA basketball tournament game Thursday. The incident was captured by television cameras and occurred during the Southern Miss and Kansas State game at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania."
