Newt Gingrich on Robert DeNiro's joke: "If it had been a Conservative talk radio show host...the Left would have exploded with rage"

Looking ahead to Saturday's Louisiana primary, tonight "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Newt Gingrich for another candid and revealing interview.

In the aftermath of actor Robert DeNiro's recent "white first lady" joke, and subsequent labeling of Gingrich as a "hypocrite" for demanding an apology, the former House Speaker offers his reaction:

"I just thought De Niro’s quote was in bad taste. If it had been a Conservative talk radio show host, who said exactly the same thing, but reversed the racial reference, the Left would have exploded with rage," says Gingrich. "But of course, if it's one of their own, and after all it's only attacking Republicans, that's perfectly appropriate."

Pressed on the issue by the host, who wondered if the Republican candidate was legitimately offended, or rather was simply looking for an excuse to "whack a Democrat," Gingrich stands firm:

"I really think the use of racism by Democrats is just as bad as the use of racism by Republicans. And I really think it's wrong to use racial references like that. Period," he tells the "Piers Morgan Tonight" host. "Just try sometime, saying exactly the same phrase, but reverse the reference."

Tune in tonight at 9pm ET/PT as Gingrich details the three reasons why he's remaining in the race, despite his recent struggles at the polls.

How lucky for Newt that Piers gave him the air time. I thought Dinero's comment was really funny and totally in keeping with the racial issues in our country. Lucky for Newt that it provided him an opportunity (opportunist that he is) with a short lived life line. Imagine, Newt Gingrich as our arbritar of what is in good taste. Gimme a break!

Poor Newtypants! The difference between this and talk radio saying it is that DeNiro doesn't proclaim he's the voice of a huge segment of the population. If Rush wants to start off every segment saying he's an entertainer and believes nothing he is about to say, then he can say whatever he likes.

i would like to hear Newt Gringrich opinion on the requirement of state id to vote which goes against voters right law and why is he always saying main stream media is not with a conservative

So you think that anyone who shows up and tells you they are citizens and they should be able to vote should be allowed to do so? I have to show my ID every day when I got to work. I have to show it to do justy about everything I do. Who do you really think is going to benefit from not requiring proof of who they are when they go to the voting booth? Illegals are the only ones who will not have that ID and those in the government who want to give them hand outs to buy their votes are the ones who will benefit. The rest of us who actually have ID and a job have to fork over all of the money to pay for these free loaders.

I am not a Newt fan but I do understand that everyone should be sensitive to how we can offend each other. I don't think De Niro's words were well thought out or appropriate. It does not help us all come together. I am in an interracial relationship with a wonderful man. We have our challenges. I do see in a person as a color. I don't think anyone should see a "color", and that includes Robert De Niro...don't keep the bs going please!!!

It's about time someone interjected some common sense. DiNiro' s comment isn't even offensive to a Republican. There' s plenty of things to get serious about and this isn't one of them.

DeNiero is wrong, Newt is right. We all have to play by the same rules. Otherwise what are we saying to our children. Different people have different standards to live by??? Come on folks use your heads. We all have to learn to play nicely in the sand box together and we could only acccomplish this by all followingy the same rules.

Piers, your closing monologue is one of the best I've ever seen!!!! Why is common sense so un-common is America????
If Americans had the humor of the Brits, we wouldn't be talking about this. De Niro was joking and meaning we are not ready to let go of the Obamas – we want them in the White House 4 more years. That's it. Like you said "get a grip" USA.

Here comes the Hollywood (Nero) left with their snide remarks depending on the safety their celebrity to push their agenda and vote. Nothing is more disgusting than the ghostly Maher and Hollywood hot shots using the main stream media to get by with crass remarks under the comfort of like minded media monkeys. Bill Maher is a filthy mouthed shock jock for immature minds, sadly he represents democrats, as does 99% of CNN hosts who invite a token conservative in to make fun of after they leave. Pearce Morgan invited Gingrich on just to laugh at with his next guests. Pearce concluded his show begging for approval for his pathetic twisted, view point and bad behavior. Even sadder he tried covering for the weak minded Bill Maher. CNN, their hosts and anchors are too biased to try to cover up the fact they are not journalists, but campaigners for the left. Morgan you still aren't any prize, decency counts and choosing Maher as a peer to stand up for, casts a smelly cloud (not mist) over your very being. Quit trying to represent Democrats, it's an insult.

Good going Newt, someone finally told Pearce and his CNN Democrat toadies the truth. That was better than anything all the Bill Mahers and purchased SNL meatballs could drum up, to top it off you didn't back down as Pearce hoped. It was fun to see him sweat. Love your guts, you get my vote.

So what's Newt's impression of the remarks Rush Limbaugh made about some innocent young woman a few weeks ago?

    March 23, 2012 at 12:22 pm | Report abuse | Reply
    • Rick Venable

I think it was very inapropriate for Rush Limbaugh to say that but let me turn the question around on you here. What is Morgan's reaction to saying that "Bristol Palin was f__ked so hard a baby fell out" and the disparaging remarks he had about the Palin's down syndrome child? The difference between the two remarks is profound in that the remark about the Palin girl was much worse. I didnt hear the Communist News Network or PMSNBC making any statements about that.

The republicans are such an ugly bunch.
These are the kids that used to get beat up on the grade school playground and for good reason.
Thankfully they're a dwindling minority in our country.
