Patricia Cornwell on the importance of forensics in the Trayvon Martin case

Bestselling author and forensics expert Patricia Cornwell examined the Trayvon Martin case on "Piers Morgan Tonight" and discussed with Piers Morgan how forensics will be a key component to the case. "What we're waiting for now is what did the medical examiner really find?" she explained. "What is the trajectory of the bullet? Was it a contact wound? Was it a slightly distant wound?"

Cornwell also mentioned how important the role of DNA evidence in the case will be, especially any DNA found on the gun. "Does it have Trayvon's DNA on it? Does it have his fingerprints on it, on it or the holster that might indicate he was grabbing for it?"

The forensics expert is interested to know if there was some sort of struggle. "How do we know that [the head wound] wasn't caused by maybe somebody who was frightened and hit somebody with their phone because it's all they've got in the hand or a bottle. Those should be checked for DNA, for evidence."

"It is mystifying why Florida's stand your grnuod law is even discussed in the context of Trayvon Martin's fatal shooting by George Zimmerman on February 26. The law bears no relation whatever to the case.""Stand your grnuod" seems applicable here, according to my understanding of the law. Martin stood his grnuod when he was pursued and attacked by a stranger in the night.

I am tired of people saying "what if" that doesn't matter. You have a child nor matter what color walking down the street and a watch person addresses him/her with a weapon is not appropriate. If, I may recall Mr. Zimmerman exited his vehicle and approached Treyvon and that's not apart of his job. Citizens on watch look not shoot and approach individuals or the problems. Therefore, race had everything to do with it and coming from an educational background all of my students both white/black male or female wear hoodies.

It wasn't a child. It was a 6-foot-3 thug. The media is brainwashing you with Trayvon's elementary-school photos. Zimmerman lost much weight since the photo they always use. Trayvon was the larger one in the struggle.

Jenny u are a perfect example of a racists. People like you and Zimmerman are exactly why this is such a big deal. What exactly made Trayvon a thug and not a child? Was it the skittles or the tea? How do you know when those pics were taken of that 17 year old? Do you know him personally to make that determination?Last time I checked 17 was still a child. But while we're labeling we're u aware that Zimmerman was arrested for assaulting an officer and beating his wife/girlfriend in the same year??? That man was a violent bully. Jenny I'm sure you are one of those white people who feel that the good Christian values of the kkk and David duke are the inbred standards that you raise your family by. I love all people and would never write off an entire race as a result of uneducated comments like yours but people like you make white people in general look really really bad....and I think that's sad for the ones who aren't like you, that you open your mouth with foolishness and it's viewed as a representation of your race.

Calling someone a thug isn't racist. Trayvon had burglary tools, had been on suspension for drugs from school. Had prior suspensions and that's WHY people are calling him a thug. He acted like one. Has nothing to do with race. The problem here is many black people are screaming like children out for more blood and what? If you don't get your way you're going to burn your homes down? Go kill some white people? Tweet more innocent people's addresses? Quit with the 'You're a racist' nonsense to avoid any logical thought in this case and to further YOUR racism.

Many blacks, and more importantly, black leaders, threaten and intimidate. Not ONE white leader has done this. Listen honey, I didn't enslave anyone. I wish black people would stop blaming everyone for their own problems and calling for riots and bloodshed before a case is ever HEARD in a courtroom.

did the police or ME even examine the body/evidence closely or did they just determine it was 'self defense' because of the the 'Stand Your Ground' law? Bless the Martin family. I hope I never have to speak of my child/children as a 'body'.

After continuously looking at the video I am convinced that Zimmerman wounds are self inflected. To me Zimmerman wounds seem to be more on the top of his head than on the back. If his head was beat on the concrete shouldn't they be on the lower part of his head?

    April 3, 2012 at 6:19 pm | Report abuse | Reply

Yes, the injury would have been in a lower area of the back of his head.Had Martin looked bigger, Zimmerman would have called 911, but he would never follow the guy. Previously, the same thing had happened, he called the cops and waited until they arrived. Though, that night, because Martin was by himself, and it was very dark, despite the dispatcher advice not to follow Martin, he took it upon himself, went after that poor little kid and shot him. Due to the fact that he was told not to follow the kid, but decided otherwise...he should be charged for his crime because he already knew what he wanted to do. That was a premeditated crime!

He was not ordered to not follow him, he was advised. Also, there is no proof to say that he continued following him after he was advised not to. Actually if you listen to the complete 911 tape, he is afraid to give his address outloud over the phone, because he's unaware of where Trayvon is.

Just because his injuries are higher on his head doesn't mean they are self inflicted, if he was trying to resist and trayvon had his hands on each side of his head that the injuries very well could've been at the top of his head.

It is indeed aptrapriope to praise Trayvon's mother for her empathy. Is it aptrapriope to praise the entire black community in America for its restraint? Why aren't black people rioting? Why haven't there been any Rodney King-scale riots since Rodney King? What kind of incident would it take to make black people riot? Is it harder for black people to riot due to factors external to their community, like stronger police forces? Is it harder to get riots started due to factors within black communities? For example, maybe Charles Murray's theory about more efficient sorting by IQ is bringing all the halfway smart mover-and-shaker types out of ghettos and into the middle class where they would loose their good jobs if they started rioting. Maybe there aren't enough people with the motivation, chrisma, and other capacities that are necessary to organize and incite riots. This sort of thing should be easier now that flash mobs can be assembled with cell phones, but maybe there just doesn't exist the critical mass of smart-ish, highly intuitive, and highly impulsive people with the ability to get a city-wide riot off the ground.

Wow. You must be an expert in forensic science and wounds.

      Pfft.

You also do realize that Zimmerman had no time to 'self inflict' any wounds on himself. There was a witness that saw him right after the shooting. Neighbors started to come out with flashlights.

The police were on scene maybe a minute after the shot was fired.

      You sir. Know nothing.

About the enhanced video that allegedly shows George Zimmerman's injury. An individual could sure cause some damage whacking that 9mm weapon on the back of their noggin...

I'm not claiming that's what actually transpired, but all scenarios must be considered in a full and transparent investigation. Does the weapon remain in custody so it can be tested for not only Martin's DNA, but also Zimmerman's DNA ?

If you do NOT have the answers to these questions, just like I do NOT have the answers, we'll just have to wait for the grand jury to decide what's what. Right? Just saying.

@Charles, your replydisplays very poor judgement in itsself. That boy was 200 yards from his doorsetep, walking home, minding his business. The last time I looked, there is no American law that prohibits someone from walking too fast or too slow. I can tell you are not an attorney. Zimmerman ASKED for confrontation by approaching that young man. Zimmerman targeted him, hunted him, and shot him in cold blood. Zimmerman had every right to watch him, but had NO right to approach him, whatsoever. Your comments are as good as Zimmermans chance at maintaining his freedom- WORTHLESS!!!! In listening to the tape, Zimmerman was trying to come up with every excuse of why he should use deadly force. He told the dispatcher that Treyvon had his hand in his waistband and was coming towards him. But then he told the dispatcher that " They always get away with stuff." ( meaning young black burglars). Then Zimmerman told the dispatcher that Treyvon started running away. Maybe Treyvon's girlfriend told him to run when Treyvon told her that Zimmerman kept following him. Zimmerman would not give the 911 dispatcher an exact location of where to meet him. The dispatcher told Zimmerman not to follow Treyvon but Zimmerman kept running after Treyvon. This will get worst before its gets better. The 911 tapes are a clear sign Zimmerman wanted a confrontation. The state attorney should be fired. Looking at Zimmerman's injury, they look self inflicted. How can you get a bump on the crown of your head when he said Treyvon was slamming his head against the concrete.

Even though he told his girlfriend he was going to walk slow, he did end up running cause Zimmerman said so on the 911 call., And why did Trayvon have to run in the first place . Is there a law against walking . He was walking in the first place . How are you trying to impress somebody by walking . He was'nt running in the first place. He was not doing anything wrong so why run. Zimmerman went after him , and he must have gotten pretty far away from his truck ,because they were way in the back of the townhomes, but all that the public thinks doesn't matter FBI on the case now . Let's just see what they come up with .If it was my son ,I would just go ahead and turn myself in after I did the deed.

Where does it say you must run, because an unknown person is following. This is not slavery anymore people wake up, if you are looking for trouble well Mr. Zimmerman found it. I guess you can't go to the corner store four your older sibling in college to purchase and Ice Tea and Skittles. I can imagine how Treyvon responded, when he was approached. People ask yourself, if you would allow and unidentified Watch Man approach you hum makes you wonder. I know if you are a parent you tell your kids don't talk to strangers and defend yourself to your best abilities. Justice will Prevail and the truth will set Treyvon soul FREE. Why is Zimmerman parents begging lawyers to represent his son. Because, they know he was wrong and he has failed to apologize.

The question of what happened is secondary to the question of why what happened happened.

    Why did this incident happen?

Because Zimmerman followed a young black boy in a truck, scared the heck out of him, and then pursued him on foot.

The boy may have been scared to find Zimmerman out of the car and following him. He may have thought his life was in danger. No other conclusion would in fact have been reasonable.

We know from the phone call that Zimmerman did not identify himself before the scuffle began. Trayvon reasonably asked why he was following him.

Zimmerman replied not by identifying himself as neighborhood watch but by aggressively asking Trayvon what he was doing in the neighborhood.

Trayvon reasonably feared for his life. Many black Americans have been killed by people who thought they were out of place.

    Perhaps Trayvon fought back.

But Zimmerman created this whole situation and scared an innocent black boy.

What the judicial system has to make clear to all Americans is that there is no right to follow in a menacing way a black boy or man and then use his fearful reaction as an excuse to take his life.

I find it very sad that Piers Morgan simply cannot see what is wrong here from the perspective of black Americans. He thinks the forensics evidence is crucial in this case.

But there is no forensics evidence in this case without sadistic and racist vigilante activities of an incompetent neighborhood watchman.

Zimmerman was negligent in the extreme as the initial investigator concluded. He is responsible for whatever transpired. And so is the whole community which signed on to this kind of neighborhood watch. They'll all have to pay in the civil case to come.

Like anyone outside of a few people investigating this crime, I don't have enough information to determine what happened. So I've been trying to stick to asking questions about things that don't seem to add up. Here's one: If George Zimmerman did chase Trayvon Martin, would he have been able to catch him? Martin was 17 yrs old, 6'0-6'3 and between 140-160 lbs. In his recent pictures, he looks relatively athletic. Zimmerman is 28 yrs old, 5'9 and 170-200 lbs. In the security camera picture, he looks like a bowling ball. On Zimmerman's 911 call, there is a beep right after Zimmerman reports that Martin is running. This sounds like the car door opening. So, if this is right, when Zimmerman begins following Martin on foot, Martin has a head start. Zimmerman then claims to have lost sight of Martin. This makes sense. A younger, more athletic 17 year old with a head start shouldn't have much trouble outrunning a stocky (or possibly overweight) 28 year old. So I don't understand how Martin could have been shot by Zimmerman without Martin at least walking back toward Zimmerman. This is an honest question, by the way. Can anyone point me to information that might shed light on this? Another discrepency struck me when I looked at the interactive map in the NY Times yesterday. The map shows (I think) the position of Zimmerman's truck, the spot where Martin was shot and the location of Martin's father's girlfriend's house. Again, assuming Martin began running near the area where Zimmerman's truck is (I think) parked, he wouldn't have had far to go to reach his father's girlfriend's house. So if he got moving quickly enough that Zimmerman lost sight of him, why didn't he make it home? A lot of this may be shown by the forensics, which could establish whether Martin was shot from a distance or up close. But I haven't heard these questions asked, so I'm interested in everyone's take.

      .
      @ hans650...

It is Zimmerman who told the 911dispatcher that Martin was running? Okay. Has there been any other eyewitnesses come forward that supports what Zimmerman told the 911 dispatcher? Was Martin actually running, or was that simply BS that Zimmerman told the dispatcher?

As I stated early in this thread: I'm not claiming that's what actually transpired, but all scenarios must be considered in a full and transparent investigation.

If you do NOT have the answers to these questions, just like I do NOT have the answers, we'll just have to wait for the grand jury to decide what's what. Right? Just saying.

Just because zimmerman is shorter and weighs more does not mean he couldn't have kept up with the teen. Zimmerman looks like he's lost weight since earlier photos. Could it be because he's been working out? He wants to be a police officer and getting in shape for that type of career wouldn't be a bad idea. And if he is an out of shape bowling ball, wouldn't that be even more reason to shoot someone that you don't want to get away?

    For anyone that is interested….
    I am an audio guy..

I took the 911 call with the most audio informatiion regarding screams, compressed it, ran it at half speed and pitch corected it 100 percent.. even though it runs slower (just a tenth over half speed) anyone with an ear for music can tell not a note has been changed.. Digital affords you this luxury. In the analog days we had to physically slow the tape/medium down and you lose pitch and clarity.

Anyway, what I find most interesting is the ghastly scream at about 1:12 right after the final shot.\.

THIS AUDIO IS NOT ENHANCED per sey.. not like enhancing a photo.. the only enhancing has been to adust volume levels so you don’t hurt your ear listening to everything at relative volume levels.

There are a few swirling artifacts in this copy because I had to compres the wav file to a 128 kbps mp3 to fit on my page so you had a player to hear it on.. These artifacts are slight and will not distract.

The 911 call as you have never heard it before, draw your own conclusions. Listen for the scream after the shot.

    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11548279

Again, draw your own conclusions, I am not here to change any minds tonight. This exercise is just a way to access the call and hear things you would not of just listening to the raw recording.

As I have commented before, when someone is painted into a corner, one will lie.
\George Zimmerman ignored the response from 911 to not follow Treyvon.
George Zimmerman instigated the persuit and altercation and killed Treyvon.
    George Zimmerman had the gun.
Treyvon called his friend and said someone is following me.
There was no need to use that gun.
George Zimmerman you will have to spend the rest of your life with the decision you made.
I live a half block from a school. A majority of the kids wear hoodies. The hoodie has been popular for a long time and
are sold, massively, in every clothing store.
Yes, I think this is a racial issue and, hopefully, the youth can learn from this.

      World Cares,
You are just listing random atatements without connected them. Zimmerman was a night watchperson, and he had a license to carry a gun. So it is not surprising that he was following someone on the property, nor was it surprising that he had a gun. Not all community patrolpersons have guns but some do. And not all follow people, but some do. You really think if it were a white guy he did not recognize walking in the rain with a hoody that he would not follow? What evidence do you have of that? And how do you know there was "no need to use the gun"? An eye-witness says he was being beaten up and he has scars on his head and the cops said his head and nose were bleeding. Do you realize you can die from a blow to the head, especially one that cuts your scalp open. This could have been a serious attack on Zimmerman. How can you ignore the evidence like this? And what if the rent a cop at the mall follows you? Can you just start beating him up? I think not.

You are no Vincent Bugliosi or William Kunkle. There is an awakening in this country to the plight of innocent young black boys/men and the profiling that has created many injustices.

Zimmerman's lawyers are using hearsay as fact/s...not a very professional way to go about things. Piers, I'm sure like me you think US law is a bit daft in a lot of ways. We all heard the tape or voice of police telling Zimmerman to stop going any further after the victim...& he continued to disobey. No arrest of Zimmerman is another idiotic decision by the police, but then we know the law is a bit of an ass in America...when you have the individual states making up their own version of law & having an "a la carte" version of a law menu to suit their individual needs then that's makes it so hard for the law to be applied properly especially in cases like this.

There should be a national federal law applied countrywide & let that be the law of the land as regards every crime, you don't need to be a big time lawyer to know that the law in the US as it stands today is a failed law. Look at the matter of the gun culture & how the shootings brought about questions as regards the ways that guns are freely available, but it is the bad gun laws that has it that way & is turning up the massacres in schools & colleges as if it was the norm...& next week the one this week will be forgotten & then the next time a shooting happens the questions of easy available guns will be asked again & then silence again & on & on it will go on. Which bring me back to Zimmerman & his use of a shotgun/rifle being used to blot out a young life & of course his fancy lawyers will blame the dead boy for bringing about his own death...with no action being taken against the holder of the gun. It's bonkers...it's idiotic...& it's wrong.

So Piers, there you have it, an outside opinion of what I think is wrong with the justice system in the US. The lawyers are too rich & good practice of the law is too cheap...no-one knows really what happened that night...but everybody...it's like if they say it enough times over & over again, what they perceive to have seen or heard...they will be believed when the only two that really know what happened is the slayer & the victim & the latter is dead. Of course the recording that we heard of the police on the radio phone saying "Don't or stop following him any further" if Zimmerman had done what he was advised to do & stopped going after the victim at that stage there would be no need for lawyers of any persuasion...but he didn't, he kept following the victim & his gun was used in a life taken away.

That's the one piece of evidence that should decide the guilt of the slayer...he disobeyed his superiors. That was the one reason death visited that scene that night...that was the decision that counts in this case. That is the one sure thing in this case & that was the reason a human being died. That is the strongest evidence, that in this case. Someone...the slayer...took it on himself to ignore the most fundamental order ever giving & decided to disobey...that was the start & end of this case being solved "That's the one fact we all know to be true". That is the one fact that says Zimmerman...caused the events after that to happen...that is the case solved & that is what makes him guilty, if not of murder, then of manslaughter. That is the FACTS in this sorry case. So lawyers, there's yours & the cases "Answer". There's it solved!

they could not not see what was going on or said they saw 2 men wrestling THATS IT,,THESE NEIGHBORS DID THEIR JOB AND CALLED THE COPS.they have no keowlndge of why they were shot or who was calling for help.for the record the shooter is latino not white, some of the 911 callers mistaken the shooter for being black, the 911 callers automatically assumed the shooter was the bad guy and NOT someone defending themselves4. the shooter had a broken nose and was bleeding from a head wound caused by this teenager who was shot.SUPPORTING HIS CLAIMS HE WAS ATTACKED.but you people are so quick to jump on a bandwagon because someone told you it was wrong. NONE of you are looking at the evidence you are a ALLLLL going on emotion or political views to push a call to arms against a man who evidence points to defending himself not a cold blooded killer..

The inquiring reporter is not supposed to have an opinion of the details in the story...he is to gather the evidence and report it supported by the facts. Until all the facts are released and presented Piers Morgan can be "shocked" all he wants to be...his opinion doesn't and shouldn't matter in the interview!!! Shut up, Piers...and listen to the answers..whether you like them or not....and if you continue to find the laws in America horrific...go back to England...where they are waiting to question you on your behavior in another "shocking" case!!!

For me, there are some very important details that have not been revealed:
    1. Did George Zimmerman have a uniform indicating that he was a security agent? If not, then he might appear to be just another thug looking for trouble. If he did say anything to Trayvon, he should have identified himself as a security officer FIRST. Trayvon, perhaps thought he was going to be robbed or mugged! If there was no uniform provided and Zimmerman was just dressed in street clothes, I would think that the homeowner's association or whoever hired him has a BIG liability problem.
    2. Did Zimmerman have any training in security work or law enforcement?
    3. Did Zimmerman identify himself as a security agent to Trayvon?

As far as I can tell Zimmerman was not liscenced in Florida to be a armed security guard, just a concealed carry permit.

So I wonder with the Stand Your Ground Law how many times you can claim self defense and get away with killing people. If it's just as simple as saying "I feared for my life" without really having to prove it does that mean you can kill more than one person on different occasions? What's the killing limit before the police lock you up?

Evaluated by mean, or variance?Well, in most cases by enetrtiy. One of the most puzzling questions that I have regarding the shooting of Trayvon Martin is the initial call to 911..Zimmerman didn't have sufficeint visibility to ascertain the race of Trayvon but yet he had enough visibility to determine or suspect that he was on drugs or something.. What drug would be able to betray it's usage under the conditions Zimmerman made his assessment..Alchohol might if Trayvon was stumbling drunk and Marijuana might if Zimmerman was close enough to see Trayvons eyes, but other than that there's no way Zimmerman could make that call without having a predisposed purpose to target Trayvon. Not to go off on my scriptural tangents but the bible does say From an abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. And it does make me wonder if Zimmerman was setting the stage to exercise his stand your ground right.

If a stranger was following me, I would not run into a dark alley. Trayvon should have called the police if he was scared

. A license to carry a concealed weapon does not make you a free-lance policeman. But, as stated earlier, deadly force is justified if you are trying to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. The use of deadly force must be absolutely necessary to prevent the crime. Also, if the criminal runs away, you cannot use deadly force to stop him, because you would no longer be "preventing" a crime. If use of deadly force is not necessary, or you use deadly force after the crime has stopped, you could be convicted of manslaughter.

Do you understand onipion'? He and his family are liars. He wasn't pursued by Martin, his nose wasn't broken, and his head wasn't busted from being bounced off concrete. He's not a patriot, he wasn't fighting evil, and he hasn't been victimized by the president. The man has the sorts of problems with honesty and reality that indicate probable guilt. That's an onipion, take it or leave it.
