Ehud Barak on a nuclear Iran: "We have to do something to block it from happening"

This evening at 9 p.m., "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak for a candid conversation on foreign policy and international affairs.

Joining Piers Morgan face to face, the former Prime Minster shares his philosophy on Iran, in terms of the country's nuclear potential:

"It's about a real challenge to the whole world, not just Israel. I think a nuclear Iran will change the whole landscape of the Middle East. We have to do something to block it from happening."

In the United States for a meeting in Washington, D.C. with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Barak places an emphasis on the world community combining forces in an effort to foil Iran's nuclear progress:

"There is a need to stop enriching uranium, to 20 percent, or even 3 to 5 percent," says Israel's Deputy Prime Minister. "To take all the enriched uranium out of the country."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in this evening at 9 p.m. as Israel's top military official explains why it's important to focus on Iran now.

39,000? From a nation > 300 million. Last night? Real record breaking stuff. Ever think that you and CNN in general might be totally out of sync with the rest of America?

Ask Ehud how about 60 years of brutal occupation of Palestine and how is it that a country with 300 nuclear warheads, submarines and the biggest air force such as Israel is scared of a country with no nuclear weapons and under brutal sanctions?

You should better ask the Palestinians... After all, if they did not like the "60 years of brutal occupation" they would NEGOTIATE A BETTER DEAL long ago. Further, if the leaders of Iran and the Arab states were assured that Israel DID NOT have nuclear weapons they would try to destroy Israel again as they've done in 1948, 1967 and 1973. The resulting was would bring hundreds of thousands or even millions of casualties meaning that Israeli nukes save a lot of Arab lives. Still further, if my neighbor was running around with a gun yelling that I and my family would be dead soon I would be concerned despite the five automatic rifles in my possession.

I watch your show every evening. I had hoped you would be tough enough to ask hard questions to Yehud Barak. For instance, why is it okay for Israel to have nuclear for their safety and not okay for Iran? I am one of many who believe that Iran having nuclear will bring peace to the region since if Israel decides to nuke them, or Palestine, or another country in the region, then Iran can nuke them as well. There would be balance in the region. It's the same concept that prevented USA & USSR from nuking each other. Second, why should Israel want and demand security from the USA when they do not provide it to the Palestinians and keep on confiscating their lands, populating them with settlers so removing them later would be an impossible task? I can go on with 4th, 5th, etc. etc. I was disappointed with the interview and most of all for not daring to ask the tough questions, not what I expected from you.

If you believe that Iran should have nuclear weapons to DEFEND itself from Israeli attack you should have no troubles to explain the reasons Israel would be willing to attack PEACEFUL Iran. In return I'll remind you how many times Iranian leaders threatened to destroy Israel... and I have no reasons to believe that Iranian leaders were liars.

I was very much moved by your post. I am Iranian, living in Ukraine. One of the first freinds I found here was an Israeli working here, we quickly found that we had many similarities and joint interests. I loved your photo because it reminds of several different nationality couples who came to surf our couch last summer. My boyfriend and I live in Sevastopol and you are welcome to come and stay with us if you ever get to these parts!

Are you ashamed of providing a soapbox without asking a single probing or challenging question! How many nuclear missiles does Israel have? Is Israel prepared to decommission weapons? Why should not Iran be allowed to possess the same tools? What's the latest status of dialogue attempts with Iran?

If Israel did not have nukes there would be no Israel. If Iran did not try to develop nukes there would be sanctions. No one is willing to attack PEACEFUL Iran. On the other hand, Israeli nukes are the only reason Iran and the Arab states did not initiate another large scale war against Israel since 1973.

Israel is surrounded by hostile enemies who persecute their own people as well as have contempt for jews. Israel having nuclear weapons is about survival in case of catastrophe. Iran, which has openly murdered civilians in her own country and abroad (blew up jewish civilians in argentina) having a nuclear weapon is about armageddon. Finally, israel didn't control the west bank, gaza and east jerusalem from 1948-67. Egypt and jordan did. Where was the palestinian state then? Morons here don't realize that the arabs caused the palestinian problem when they rejected the creattion of palestine in 1948.

Where do you get your facts from Sara Pailen or is it Fox New?
Please watch Norman Finkelstein: Hezbollah, Honour in Resistance on YouTube. If you still don't get it you could read and hear Norman Chomsky on YouTube.
You might want to count some 48 military base sourounding Iran and you call Iran the aggressor ? How many nuclear war head and WMD does Israil have? Iran had oil right ? No nuclear war heads not even ONE. War makes who rich ? In the end we all bleed the same. Lets get some facts right our young men and women died based on propongander and lies said by which nation ? In over 1000 or more year history of Iran this nation has never once invaded any of it's neighbors or occupied any land. Please check : President Ahmadinejad meets Neturei Karti Rabbis on YouTube. Did you know that it was Iran and other Moslim countries that protected the Jewish people during World War 1 and 2 ? Why did the Europian countries turn away?

I liked what Billy Bob Thorton said tonight; most of his views and comments are what I believe in and think.
I'm from the Heartland and we just had general election that was on National news and on Rush Limbaugh's talk show.
With politics out of control it was nice to hear the Nebraska Candidates speak down to earth.
The only one I could care less about is Kerrey who lives in New York but came bak to run for the Senate. He needs to stay back East even though he has a sister living here and other family. He should have not been on the Ballot; Tuesday which is very strange and odd. Not a fan of the Left Side of Politics.

    Thank you,

What a wimp you were with Barak, you just provided a forum for the same old, same old. Speaking against Israel's policies and questioning "their" Nuclear Threat to the region is not being anti-Semitic, as the American Right would have you believe. You appear to have lapsed intellectually and abandoned your journalistic integrity and quite a bit of your moral authority this evening. I won't forget, and won't watch your show again. I feel sorry for you!

Justice is an empty word when you occupy some one land that is not your. What if your lovely neighbor desided to remove you from your home, bulldoze your home and build the home they want and you go live in Gaza. That's not nice or comfortable is it ? And guess what ? You and I are supporting this because it the law we pay taxes.

Why don't you SHOW THE LEGAL DEEDS proving that the "occupied land" belongs to someone else? THEN you will have something to base your complaints about "empty justice"... It's unfortunate that neither you nor anyone else can show such deeds. Therefore, your accusations are nothing but empty racist lies... and THIS is exactly what anti-Semitism is about.

Piers, very disappointing ! you created a platform for war mongering Barak to brainwash Americans again and make himself look like a saint.....did you know that he is here to STEAL another $650 million of hard earned American taxpayers money in the name of security for Israel, I thought you'd at least ask him what the hell he is in America for and how much he is taking this time....Americans taxes are being sent to war mongering Israel to occupy, murder, and invade other people's lands....wasn't the 1500 Palestinians on HUNGER STRIKE news worthy to ask , or the 4500 young Palestinian political prisoners big enough number to discuss.....BTW, when was the last time Iran attacked another country? You name me one and I'll name 100 by Israel....ever heard of AIPAC, the most powerful lobbyist in America, agents of Israel, controlling our entire government, recently wined and dined 100 US senators (or congressmen) in Israeli resorts for one week, would that be news worthy to ask ? Please get off Iran's back Piers and focus on America's true enemies.......don't be scared of these people, do your journalistic job, you may lose your job but at least you'll have your honor and respect for your profession.....

Hahaha, are you kidding ? how about Israel attacks on Iraq and Syria's nuclear facilities and illegally destroying them, did those countries attack Israel first, or how about NOW; Israel full fledged plans and threats to attack Iran, has Iran ever attacked Israel or ever Iran been at any war with Israel ? Iranian dictators have no plans of building nuclear boms as Israel has, and they have no desire to attack any country, unlike USA defense industry in Iran is not owned by private corporations and there is no intensive for Iranian government get itself in any wars benefiting any corrupted defense industry as in the USA.....WARS benefit western Defense, Oil, and Pharma industries which are mostly owned by the Zionists....

Ed... You will be surprised but it is PERFECTLY LEGAL to destroy military facilities of the enemy DURING A WAR... and BOTH Syria and Iraq are AT DECLARED STATE OF WAR with Israel since 1948. Further, it is even more legal to HAVE PLANS of defense in case the enemy will attack your country. One has to be... No, even an idiot will not claim that it is "illegal" to have such plans. Further, if you believe that Iran is not planning to build nuclear bombs you should have no troubles to explain how will Iran possibly use hundreds of nuclear-capable long range ballistic missiles that are virtually harmless without proper warheads. Good luck!

michaelfrivero... In 1948 Israel DID NOT "invade" Palestine... unless you have some evidence to show that in 1948 Israel CAME to Palestine from some other place. Further, Palestine WAS NOT and IS NOT a country. Still further, if you belive that Israel "stole" Palestine then you should be able to SHOW SOME PROOF that Palestine legally belongs to someone else. In addition, if you believe that Israel "stole Palestine for themselves" then WHO ARE THE FIVE MILLION IMPOSTORS who live in Palestine and call themselves Palestinians???

Finally, HOW MANY LIES can you fit in one six-word statement?

In 1948, European Ashkenazi Jews arrived in the region of Palestine. These Jews had their own culture developed over many generations away from Judea-Palestina. To make room for them they terrorized the local Palestinian natives, which consisted of Jews, Christians and Muslims living peacefully. The Palestinian homes were confiscated, their towns taken over and renamed. This is known among Palestinians as "nakba" or catastrophe – so the birth date of Israel signifies for them the loss of their homes and way of life. Current Israeli Law of Return grants citizenship to any Jew from abroad while denying a Palestinian born in a region that is now in Israel a right to their home of birth. Interestingly, if you are a Jew who converted to Christianity, you are not granted Law of Return. How can you possibly justify any of this? The stock answer is "Holocaust", but if so, give the Jews parts of Germany!

Andrew... If those "Ashkenazi Jews" arrived in Palestine in 1948 HOW COME in 1947 the UN offered to create TWO STATES in Palestine? and HOW COME the Arabs REFUSED the UN offer? It seems that the Arabs DID NOT WANT either a state nor peace then... and they got what they've asked for.

Please hear what Jewish people like Norman Finkelstein and Norman Chomsky have to say about this occupitain on YouTube. Does any one know how much of our tax dollar is going to support Israil ? And at what cost of Humain lives this has taken ? Kindly google or Bing for your facts.
Please love America our country is broke our larder is on empty. We owe more money to China than ever before. We could have given up Florida, Delaware or a part of England to the Jewish people who suffer so much in Europian countries in all fairness. What percentage of Jewish people are Europeans can also be googled or binged.

Sandy... If the Palestinians did not like the current arrangement they would NEGOTIATE A BETTER DEAL long ago. Further, while the US aid to Israel is very much appreciated it amounts to tremedous 2% of Israeli GDP. An average American gives $10 a year for US aid to Israel but $50 a year for aid to the Arab countries. Still further, if you're willing to give up Florida, Delaware or a part of England to the Jewish people WHY don't you give these lands to the Palestinians? After all, the Jewish people already HAVE a state but the Palestinians are stateless...

Sorry hit post before finishing. What do you mean better deal to the Palestinians? It should be a just deal not a better deal.
I believe that no one has the right to have nuclear weapons including Iran, and also Israel.
Instead of bring Barak to a staged interview and hold his hand how about talking about the Palestinians prisoners who are on hunger strike!!! Just to get basic human rights! I am not saying Israel should not exist, that is not correct, however the Palestinians has the right to live as any other human being free, and have their own land with full control, not like" let's give this part and that part, and the by the way we still control all your money, water, life?!! That is called prison!
Until Israel government is welling to treat the Palestinian as human beings there will be no peace in the middle-east, and the notion that Israel needs to defend itself against the Arabs, that is a big joke right now, as we know all the Arab governments care less about Palestinians and they just use this to cover themselves, big example Qatar, Egypt, and Saudis. To have peace we need to be honest and critic ourselves. The Arabic governments did not help their cause at all by their corruptions and back stabbing each other, and the Israel government will not help its people by looking down to the Palestinians.

A BETTER deal is in the eye of the beholder. If the Palestinians believed that peace and a sovereign state of their own is BETTER than a war they would have peace and a state. As long as they prefer to have a war they'll continue to have it. Further, I believe that a JUST deal is for everyone to have equal rights and opportunities. Today there are 21 Arab states in the MIddle East and 22nd was offered to the Arabs of Palestine since 1948. The Arabs, however, demand the single Jewish state to be destroyed... and somehow they refer to it as "justice". If the Palestinians wanted to control their land, money, water and lives they would recognize Israel and negotiate a peace agreement. As long as they prefer to have a war with Israel they will have no peace and no state and Israel will continue to control their activities to assure the safety of Israelis.

WE, as Americans, have to do something to block another UNLAWFUL WAR OF AGGRESSION from being launched with OUR tax dollars.

I note that Iran has signed the NNPT, which guarantees them the "inalienable right" to do all which they have done.
I note that Israel has NOT signed the NNPT, despite clearly being a nuclear power. Despite it being unlawful under Federal Law for congress to appropriate money for foreign aid to any nuclear power which has not signed the NNPT, we continue to give Israel over $2 Billion a year in militaristic aid. We also seem to have diverted materials from our own nuclear program in the 70s to aid Israel in getting the bomb, a clear violation of OUR treaty obligations under the NNPT.
