READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
On Thursday, Piers Morgan used his "Only in America" segment to address the backlash over Marissa Mayer's decision to have a baby on the heels of her appointment as the new boss of tech giant Yahoo!
As the host explained, the 37-year-old former Google executive has recently announced news of the upcoming arrival of her first child, a boy, due in October.
"But not everybody shared this additional joy," remarked Morgan. "Yahoo!'s stock rose sharply higher on the news of her appointment, and then it dropped just as sharply when the media focused on her impending baby story."
"Wall Street clearly falling for the cynical men's locker room chatter that Ms. Mayer would be too distracted with diapers to concentrate on her new job, trying to revive Yahoo!'s struggling fortunes," surmised Morgan.
Supporting his point, he played a clip of CNBC's Brian Sullivan, second-quessing Mayer's move:
"That's going to be tough. Take some time off. Yahoo! has been in trouble for years. My advice take some time off, get your baby, you know, raise the kid for a little bit, and work on the company when you can."
Morgan, did not share Sullivan's perspective:
"What a load of sexist, patronizing clap trap," he responded. "The same men criticizing are, of course, the types who spent 18 hours chained to their corporate office desks, never seeing their families or indeed the real world."
And the kicker, firmly delivered by Morgan, himself a working father:
"Where did that get America in the last decade? Yep, into the worst financial crisis in history."
Only in America, concluded the host, might a woman be criticized for attempting to master the complex issue of work-life balance:
"I suspect the distraction of having a baby will make Marissa Mayer an even better executive. In the meantime, try dragging yourselves kicking and screaming out of the Dark Ages, you Wall Street dinosaurs. Women bosses are here to stay. And guess what? They're going to have babies."
