John McCain on the U.S. Embassy attacks in Libya: "I'll be damned if I'm ready to abandon the freedom of speech because it might offend the prophet Muhammad"

Coming up this evening at 9, Piers Morgan talks to John McCain where the senator gives his assessment on the U.S. Embassy attack in Libya that resulted in the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

McCain, a former war veteran, adamantly believes that the incident was a terrorist attack. "Anybody who believes that an attack with mortars and rocket propelled grenades in a very sophisticated attack is a result of a video is - I mean - it's just ridiculous," the former prisoner of war says.

McCain emphasizes that it is "not the video that's stoking these demonstrations":

"It's the radical Islamists that are using the videos as a means of inflaming passion in the Middle East," says the senator. "And I'll be damned if I'm ready to abandon the freedom of speech because it might offend the prophet Muhammad."

Tune in tonight at 9 to hear more from McCain and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof on the Middle East crisis.

Coming from a Democrat, the last and only war John McCain fought in, he spent the entire duration of the war in a Vietcong prison, smoking bamboo cigars and reading Time Magazine while his comreds fought to the bitter end. I don't take what McCain says seriously because he's senile and incompetent.

Your are a blind idiot. Rather than listen to reason from not only a war veteran, but someone who has served in public office all his life, you choose to simply label him and disregard what he has to say. This is why these extremists are so dangerous, because they know the American people can be as blind and stupid as you are. What he says makes perfect sense. A video caused all this? I've never thought that. Try using your brain for one second.

McCain is a senile old man that realyy should just shut up. McCain is making a fool out of himself since his presidential defeat. With all the countries that John McCain wants to invade, bomb, even nuclear bombings he'd have the U S in a world war with the senseless killings and bloodshed that goes with his wars. McCain is a dangerous madman on the lose, the GOP should stop McCain from campaigning with of McCain's madness he's certainty hurting the GOP. Just think if the GOP should gain control of the senate that dangerous madman and warmonger John McCain would become Chairman of the Senate Armed Service Committee. That alone is enough to turn voters off on the GOP. A vote for a GOP candidate with McCain is a vote for war. Nobody but McCain and the Defense and Oil Industries that own McCain want war,.We sure don't want McCain in any position sending our children and grandchildren off to some war because of his own self frustration and hatred. That's a scary thought having a war nut like McCain in that position.

I take it you have never been a POW, or served your country at all. So unless you have done one or the other or both, keep your mouth shut and do not dishonor or discredit any of our Men and Women in uniform ever. They have fought for your freedoms and don't ever forget that.

blah, i am a dem too, and dont always agree with some of McCains ideas. but i respect him as a man & person more than most repubs, or any politicians period. he's says what he belives, doesn't lie, and knows a lot about politics, military & war. plus, what he said in this video is right on target, exactly correct. as i said, i am a dem, will vote for Obama again.... but Obama administration dropped the ball here big time, with their response to recent terror attack on 9/11/12. Islam is a huge threat to all of America,s future. most all are not friendly or tolerant of ANYTHING except Islam. they will take over many aspects of America & the World in upcoming decades.

      • You're Kidding, Right?

OK, I'm a pretty left leaning person, but you are just dead wrong on this one, Blah Blah. I may not agree completely with John McCain's assessment and reaction regarding what happened in Lybia, but for anyone to suggest that spending years in a POW camp of any kind is some sort of act of cowardice has certainly lost a wheel or two off their own mental trailer. Sorry, Bub, but that is the cold, hard truth.

@ my critics below. See my comment at the bottom of the page. Or let me reiterate here...

First and foremost, while Senator McCain may be considered by some to be an American war hero, let's face it, Senator McCain is no American hero. Senator McCain voted against the King Holiday and when he was running for the presidency a few years back, he claimed that he voted against the King Holiday because he didn't have enough time to study Dr. King's legacy. That is BS! For tose of you who have chose to forget or don't know a thing about American history, Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr was an American PIONEER and HERO who fought for racial justice and equality and for an end to racial segregation and discrimination in America. Dr. King also dedicated his life and legacy to fighting for the right of all American to vote and during Dr. King's legacy, he helped to shape and solidify our American democracy but unfortunately Senator McCain doesn't see it that way. Furthermore, when you demonstrate contempt for an American PIONEER and HERO who helped to shape the course of our American democracy, then you're going against the very fabric of what make us who we are today as a great nation and democracy.

Secondly, I don't have a problem with Senator McCain gving his opinion on what he believes happened in Benghazi but before he attempt to do so, I believe he needs to address the United Nations, the world community and the American people and tell us whatever happened to the WMDs? let's face it, thousands of our troops have died in Iraq, which is a whole lot more than the four Americans who died in Libya. Furthermore, tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians have died in Iraq and many continue to die today because Senator McCain and the GOP invaded and destabilized a sovereign nation during peace time. Third, a decade later, we are still suffering casualties in an Afghan war Senator McCain and the GOP deliberately and recklessly abandoned and prolonged to invade Iraq. Its time Senator McCain and the GOP come clean about these war atrocities.

Good for you, John McCain...I have ceased to look at Islam as a "religion," in the sense that Westerners understand the term. This is an ideology of Totalitarianism that uses INTIMIDATION to achieve its silencing of Western freedoms in general. I see virtually no respect for individual conscience within Islam. What kind of "religion" sanctions its so-called "clerics" to order the DEATH of ANYONE who is deemed to be "A Threat to Islam," and to often pay HUGE SUMS OF MONEY to have these assassinations carried out??? This isn't religion–it has FAR more in common with the Mafia. Can anyone here imagine Priests, Ministers and Rabbis SANCTIONED by the U.S. government to order the deaths of those who express strong criticism of these respective creeds?? It is OUTRAGEOUS. It is TIME FOR ISLAM TO REALIZE THAT THE WEST WILL NOT BUCKLE TO ITS THREATS. As it is, some 17,913 individuals have been killed by ISLAMIC TERROR ATTACKS since 9/11. Perhaps Bin Laden said it best in a message years ago to the West. He said: "YOU Love LIFE, While WE LOVE DEATH." How charming...are Muslims proud of this lack of respect for individual conscience??? Whoever opposes Islamic dogma is marked for death. This has NO PLACE IN Western Democracies...

You are so stupid and ignorant, people like you are Bad for the society. Islam is a very Pure religion, just like any other religion it's worshippers are human beings subject to bad influence,...because we are people. Our society has wonderful, kind, descent, as well as bad, ignorant like you, and criminals who would go to the extreme. It's clear you don't mean well, but WATCH YOUR BIG MOUTH. Whats the difference between Bin Laden and Republicans?
Republicans accidentally killed more AMERICANS then Bin Laden did, enough said!

March 19, 2003: At 10:15 p.m. EST, Bush announces that U.S. and coalition
forces have begun military action against Iraq. said," invade and we will be greeted as liberators", then said we have enough soldiers and they don't need to be better equipped
May 1, 2003: Aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, Bush declares "major combat operations" over, although some fighting continues.
March 24, 2004, At Wednesday's 60th annual dinner of the Radio and Television Correspondents' Bush makes laughs in speech, as Americans children were face down in the dirt on foreign soil dieing, on his behalf... Bush made fun in speech, yucked it up with his buddies ON BOTH SIDE OF THE ISLE, that there are no WMD "
September 6, 2004: The number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq reaches 1,000. Bush said we have enough soldiers and they don't need to be better equipped.
January 10, 2007: A troop surge begins, increasing U.S. troop levels to more than 150,000. Bush said we "DON'T" have enough soldiers and they "DO" need to be better equipped. 3 years late but who's counting bodies?
March 22, 2008: The number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq reaches 4,000.
March 13, 2008 Bush you can tell has never served in war because he referred to the WAR as ROMANTIC, "It must be exciting for you ... in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger"! My friend who lost both legs and 1/2 a hand said he doesn't feel romantic, in fact he wishes someone would romance Bush!
Aug 2008 Bush and team rob the banks while rideing out of town!

Jody, you're the bigot because you're putting muslims into one group of people that are killling machines and can't control their actions. I pretty much assumed he was referring to the muslims who werre rioting, calling for the death of the filmaker and killed the american ambassador and the american seals. You said that americans have been taught to fear and hate the axis of evil, you're the one who is fearing and hating because you're too afraid to say anything against the muslims and are now saying that feedom of speech should be changed to suit them, and you're hating anyone that is going to disagree with you. Fear and hate have been displayed these last few weeks and basically you have been warped by the fear-mongering. You said that we know nothing of the people who live, breathe and cry just as we do, I'm assuming you meant the ordinary muslims and I loved it when some of them in Libya put roses in the door of the american embassy there to show that they wanted to remember the americans who were killed because they stood on the side of freedom. They are ordinary people just like you and me, they have been hurt in all of this too and I want to stand up with them.

    Fax no: 213.547.8080
    Dear Sir,
Sub: Prosecution of previous President Mr. George W.Bush, for violation of International Code of Conduct.
Mr. George W.Bush, the previous President of United States of America, initiated a war against IRAQ, without obtaining the previous sanction of United Nations Organization (UNO) on the pretext of having nuclear weapons, even though the then IRAQ government openly exhibited to the whole world that it has no nuclear weapons.
According to the CNN WORLD report, in the war 6, 75,000 civilians killed, 7500 troops of USA and its allied forces killed 3 25 000 people wounded and $ 3.5 Trillion Dollar spent for the war. This spending of $ 3.5 Trillion Dollar is the main cause of action for the present economic crises prevailing all over the world.
After winning the war against IRAQ, the United States of America’s President Mr. George W.Bush, also admitted the same fact, and he openly stated that the Intelligence agency misguided him.
Later on, even the United Nations Organization (UNO) also certified that the IRAQ has no nuclear weapons.
Then it is the bounded duty of the United States of America and its allied forces to withdraw from IRAQ.
But instead of withdrawing from IRAQ, the United States of America and its allied forces formed a government in IRAQ, under their control and administered the entire IRAQ, and its peoples.
This indicates a clear violation of duty by the President of United States of America Mr. George W.Bush and also a clear case of violation of the International Code of Conduct for UNO members.
Thus Mr. George W.Bush attracts prosecution for the above said offence.

      First question

What do your comments have to do with the article and video link to Senator McCain? I'm lost???

If your going to criticize the war in Iraq, please get your facts straight and run spell checker. Additionally, quit watching your favorite TV news channel...they're eating your mind.

I stopped reading after the whole one currency for all countries. That is the DUMBEST CRAP I ever read! Sure we could have small economic countries paying for product as much as germany! Let's have inflation in the 1000's for countries such as Philipines, Vietnam, every country in Africa, every country in south America and so on. Please next time you want to post something think about what you're going to say.

Open immigration and emigration to All country. Free trade business policy to All country as global law. All country should have same currency? Please do not try to explain, THE WAR WAS WRONG...THE KILLINGS REGARDLESS OF THE BODY COUNT WAS WRONG! TO EVEN SUGGEST ONE WORLD ORDER IS COMPLETELY INSANE! OPEN IMMIGRATION, FREE TRADE AND SAME CURRENCY...COME ON...WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT AND CANNOT LIVE TOGETHER UNDER ONE GIANT ROOF! TOO MANY DIFFERENT RELIGIONS, LIFESTYLES AND CURRENCIES! TOO MANY CRAZIES IN EVERY RELIGIONS AND NO TRUST ANYWHERE! It will be impossible! Best thing for all, stay out of every Countries Business, protect your borders, protect your family, except that hating all Americans for the actions of our Leaders is wrong and wanting Revenge is wrong! The good of every race and religion need to somehow bond and let the crazies destroy each other and PRAY for some peace and live life without wars, killings and my religion is the best and must be pushed and forced on people! YES, THIS DREAM ALONG WITH YOURS IS BEYOND BECOMING REAL OR WORKABLE, BUT...IS IT NOT GOOD TO BE ABLE TO DREAM AND WISH FOR SOMETHING GOOD TO WISH FOR? BUCKLE DOWN, ALL THE SIGNS ARE BEATING US UP...THE END IS NEAR AND NO HUMAN IS GOING TO WAVE A MAGIC WAND TO FIX ALL THAT IS BROKE! PEACE TO ALL AND MAY OUR CHILDREN NOT SUFFER FOR OUR WRONGS!

  17. John McCain, King of the welfare queens

Here's a guy who was born into military royalty, son and grandson of 4 star admirals. He floated through Annapolis on the tax payers dime, parlayed that into a USN commission, cashed Navy checks for 23 years on active duty, retired as an O-6, and has been cashing those retirement checks, with free medical every since, all compliments of the US tax payer. But, still more gravy to soak up!! He was elected as a US Congressman in 1982, and to the Senate in 1986, and he cashes those government checks to this day. Today, he makes $174K yr as a US Senator, $60K yr as a retired O-6, $1800 yr SS, and receives free medical care. ALL PAID FOR BY THE US TAXPAYER. This guy has never earned an honest buck in his life. Shame on john mccain!

You have no clue about respect and thankfulness. John McCain lost the full us of his arms while serving in the military. Your idea and others in this post seems to be when people have served their country all their life, then they should be disrespected and told to shut up and quit engaging in life. You ignorant idiot. I imagine you would be the first to round up senior citizens who have decades of experience and wisdom and put them in death camps so they can no longer have active lives. Unlike you and the others in this blog who denigrate WOUNDED WARRIORS, many of us are thankful for their service and we want to hear what they have learned from their life experiences.

You have it right. While in captivity of the Viet Cong for over six years, he was constantly beaten and tortured. Additionally, when it was his time to be (early repatriation), he refused and remained in captivity. The idiots on this blog who criticize his military service, obviously no nothing about him nor have ever served in the armed forces, their just cowards behind a keyboard. And to suggest that Senator McCain had it easy in the military because of his family ties is yet another lie. You don't fly flighter jets unless your a pretty smart individual...end of story.

Living in AZ and following McCain through the years I realized that John McCain is a great liar. He talks out of both sides of his mouth but has one of the most conservative voting records in the senate. Dating back to 1988 with the MLK JR Holiday McCain showed what a true racist he is, Knowing that the Holiday was going to past and knowing that by voting NO he'd cause AZ to lose the Super Bowl and the millions that went with the game. McCain still voted against the Holiday. Now there's a man of principle and a real racist too. John McCain is nothing more than a pathological blatant liar. It's just now that his lies and deceit is catching up to him.

The filmaker didn't incite violence. What part of the film did that? Just because some people found the film offensive, that means it's a good enough reason to ahead and kill people? Inciting violence means when someone advises other people to go ahead and commit violence, like when the protesters were calling for the death of this man who created the film. Also, if you give out their address when you know that people want to act violently towards them. Basically, you just proved you don't what freedom of speech is.

On 911 America lost more than 3000 in WTC and thousands others economically dead with Republican President. None of the Democrats or Republican criticized nor George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove ever showed up in CNN news. Republican President had full CIA & other intelligence but Rumsfeld had no control & were ego minded and others never analyzed & activated the security against terrorists. In this most sad single attack America lost thousands in WTC as well in Pentagon with not a single word from Republican leadership. Libya Consulate attack could not be prevented with one platoon or more as bases in Afghanistan with thousands of troops are still facing RPG attacks of Taliban as local Muslims younger generation do not support foreign troops despite US best welfare efforts for their future. Making Libya Consulate attack an issue is not morally & politically correct as such incidents continue to happen all over the world by terror groups for their sensational satisfaction but with no effective solution. They are part of people & merge after attack in same population. Terrorist just want to terrorize & break the will to fight & force into submission. It has a history in all Muslim countries or ruled by Muslim Kings. Even other countries experienced the same at the hands of dictators or religious heads with so many living examples known to all. Off late some countries have state sponsored terrorism to meet their political & theocratic objectives which will always remain unfulfilled. Solution to American economy & recovery after 2008 is substantial but slow as freedom of industry & business continue to rule the market in America with capitalists moving out of USA for higher profits at the cost of jobs & people of America. Trend can be reversed only by manufacturing in USA of all or 50% of consumer items which alone can drive the market & jobs creation beside public transportation system of High Speed Rail providing millions of jobs in industry as well in supportive industries for public transportation cutting down directly logistics costs as well providing flip to other subsidiary industry. President Obama has founded recovery process after recovering from shocks of economic collapse of America in 2008 and needs to be given next terms as Democratic Presidents for putting American economy on track & regaining the strategic status globally once again. There is no alternative to President Obama concept of American economy & he has travelled well on the path to progress. If anyone is interested to learn how Republican President managed, you can read “State of Denial” by Bob Woodward that gives out pen picture of republican mess & management of two wars.

People move on and stop defending this politician. He is only happy when he is in control. He is never happy when anyone else does anything. He's always complaining when it's not him who is leading the way.

Keep standing behind politician who isn't happy unless it's his way. A person who hasn't moved on beyond his traumatic years behind enemy lines. I regret the day I vote for this politician and palin. A worthless party couple.

I was taught to respect elders. I have always respected John MCCain, until now. His comment is outrageous, and careless. As a public figure, he should be diplomatic, and cautious, for the good of Society. McCain's comment was not an HEROIC one, it was timid. Again, this is not why freedom of speech was enacted. Society first, and not politics.

McCain is such an idiot. Pardon my language. So he wanted President Obama to announce that the libyan embassy attack was committed by a terrorist group without having a proper investigation first to gather the facts. That type of action prompted our action and war with Iraq. Ignore finding the facts before taking action. We need smarter people in Congress.

  33. Blah blah the wheel's off your trailer

@wrightpict, scott, voice of reason, Marti, clarke, doug and you're kidding...

First and foremost, John McCain may be considered by some to be An American war hero but he's no American hero at all. John McCain voted against the King Holiday and a few years back when he was running for the presidency, he claimed that he voted against the King Holiday because he didn't have enough time to study King's legacy. That is BS. For those of you who don't seem to know much about American history, Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr. was an American PIONEER nad HERO who fough for racial justice and equality and an end to racial segregation and discrimination in America. Dr. King also fough for the right of women and minorities to vote and he was one of those American PIONEER and HERO who helped to shape and solidify our American democracy. But unfortunately Senator McCain didn't see it that way. Do I hate Senator McCain? Of course not but when you display contempt for the legacy of an American PIONEER and HERO who helped to shape and solidify our American democracy, then you're against all the very things that make us who we are as a great democracy and nation.

Secondly, I don't have a problem with Senator McCain giving his opinion on what may have happened in Benghazi but before he attempt to do so, I'd rather him address the United Nations, the world community and the American people and tell us what ever happened to the WMDs? Let's face it, thousands of our troops have died in Iraq, that is a whole lot more than the four Americans who died in the Benghazi attack, tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have also died and continue to die today and a decade later, we are still fighting an Afghan war and continue to suffer casualties in that second war as well, simply because Senator McCain and the GOP deliberately and recklessly abandoned and prolonged the Afghan war to invade Iraq. Senator McCain is addressing the wrong conflict. Where are the WMDs?
