On Tuesday evening, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn expressed her concern over NYU Langone Medical Center's generator failure during Superstorm Sandy.
"We were assured, we being the city, that the hospitals within Zone A had capacity to get patients out before the storm, stop taking in anything that was not emergency procedures, and that they had sufficient backup generators," said Quinn.
"There are obviously enormous questions that NYU needs to answer," voiced a concerned Quinn. "I understand why they cannot give us those answers today, because they need to get the hospital back up and running. But they are questions that have to be answered."

I thought Pierce Morgan was brutal with the questions to the Doctors about the generators in NYU...being a medical proffessional I totally understand both sides (how could they fail?). But also at the same time, in a crisis like this, where sometimes you have no control of how equipment & systems is going to function in the mist of being flooded & damaged with water, these Doctors and the entire medical staff did the best they could!! and they did it well....PLEASE WAIT before you jump into conclusions that they were not ready.....do not imply negligence on their part-mother nature was brutal, they dont need you to be either.
Shame on you Mr. Morgan. You are no better tan Ann Coulter. You should be working for Fox not CNN. Why can you not just ask the relevant questions and wait for a reply. This is supposed to be reporting the news, not a witch hunt. What is the biggest shame is that you have a gift of reporting but you choose to spew vitriol instead. Shame.
Absolutely NO ONE could have predicted the enormous devastation from this storm. No one has ever seen a catastrophic event this size. Stop blaming the hospital for not being prepared!
Based on everything they knew and experienced before, they were ready!
Why weren't the SUBWAYS prepared?
"Absolutely NO ONE could have predicted the enormous devastation from this storm."
Ah, but they did!
And subways? The letters "sub' sorta tell it all.
Time for Mr Morgan to return to his home country. He is so arrogant and rude, ( LAST NIGHT TO THE doctor from NYU Hospital was the last straw ) he takes my breath away. Please go home where your countrymen may think you are clever-We here don't !
Actually, he is not considered clever in the UK, his reputation gravitates more towards that of an air-headed buffoon. Quite right too.
Cheers to Piers for asking the relevant questions. It is about time we stop congratulating people for failing in this country.
Piers it is so easy for you to sit in your chair and judge. This is no easy feat and hind sight is 20/20 so get off your high horse. They didn't lose any patients and were successful in making sure people were taken care of. There is no way that ANYONE can see or plan for everything! I am in healthcare also and understand what it takes to move critically ill patients! Come off that throne you have put yourself on!
Your outrage is not shared Piers. You've moved past journalism and into just plain rudeness. Stop it please.
you are so right!
Piers,
The medical world is very close remember 2002 Houston Texas....1,000-Year Flood Paralyzes Texas Medical Center. The deluge hit TMC particularly hard, as flooding filled underground parking garages, the underground tunnel system that connects many of the facilities, and basements housing critical power supplies, transformers, generators, switches, and other electrical equipment. Fire his ass!!!
Pierce is getting more arrogant by the day. Why don't you go to Bellevue and fix everything with omniscient pretense.
Agree
Piers Morgan needs to come work in a hospital for a 12 hour shift or better yet a week, so he can how hard it is to keep the hospital functioning according to all of the government regulations! You can not compare a business that still has their lights on to a hosptial that has multiple levels of complex needs. The damage a hurricane can do to any structure can never be forseen, hospital are no different, yet they have to look out for all of the needs of many different kinds of patients. Piers – you were wrong in how tough you were when you quized the hospital administrator!
Piers, I have liked watching your show for some time now, however I do think you have lost your way. Your questions tonight about the unprecedented events impacting the hospitals systems & the President of the Hospital not being totally prepared for the unthinkable was "quite silly" as you would say......that's like asking the Civil engineer who designed the twin towers why he didn't design the building to withstand the unthinkable impact of a fully fueled Boeing 727.......or why the secret service allowed President Kennedy to ride in an open car in Texas on that faithful day.
I understand it's your job to be somewhat sensational because it "sells".... But there is a time an place for that, this neither the time nor the place for what you were selling. YOUR authenticity is what makes your show work & why I watch, don't ever lose that my friend, that is what separates you from the pack.
Be Well.
I think Pierce is an alright guy but if he doesn't learn how to ask a question and then shut up and wait for an answer, he's not going to last. I was watching his interview with Moore and the pres. of the Hospital systems: 1. Pierce isn't very realistic, you can't prepare for something so unusual no matter how good of an imagination you may have 2. Perce would ask his guest a question but not shut up long enough for the guest to answer 3. Kudos to those involved in the interview for not getting frusttated and ending the interview 4. Pierce asks why they would build hospitals so close to a major water system...perhaps the intelligent land locations where already swallowed up by rich, beaurocratic asses like Pierce how feels their needs and wants were more of a priority...realistically, when these places were built maybe it was the most intelligent decision of the time when water lines were made of humans not plastic...GOOD LUCK Pierce but your interview skills are like your judging skills...amateur at best
As a patient at NYU, I for one am glad that Piers is asking difficult questions about what happened there. Granted, the nursing and medical staff did an *amazing* job evacuating these critical patients, but the question of what happened to lead up to that evactuation needs to be pressed. From what I've heard, both the first generator *and* the fuel pump for the second generator on the roof were kept in the lower levels of the hospital. When the lower level flooded, it caused both systems to malfunction and fail. And the hospital is right on the water, so the flooding might have been expected. Whether that's the case or not, seems like this this deserves *much* more attention as a case study for other hospitals and emergency planning in general.
and if the fuel was stored on the roof and sprung a leak that would of course go downward...people would complain about that and say it should have been forcasted...not to mention..how would you deliver the fuel to the roof...especially in an emergency situation similar to these last few days...we can prepare as best we can...then deal with that happens the best we can...and forcast the best we can..
My whole point with Pierce is: ask the difficult questions and have the courteousy to shut up and listen to the response he asked for!..What comes forward could be what he's looking for...now we may never know!
"and if the fuel was stored on the roof and sprung a leak that would of course go downward"
And what's to guarantee that the pipe(s) that take the fuel from the basement to the other back-up generator (on the roof) wouldn't spring a leak? Gravity would still work. Either way a leak would not be a good thing. BUT what if it DIDN'T leak and the back-up generator worked and no patients had to be evacuated?
Another scenario-– is to have pipes etc installed properly and inspected properly and regularly so the chances of them leaking would be minimal. Would the CEO and board members 'go for' that 'needless' expense? Do I hear the ghost of Carmen Miranda singing---"We don't need a window on such a sunny day"?
I agree with Larry, storing fuel and pumping it from the basement is probably the safest solution. A leak of any kind would pose catastrophic contamination issues in a hospital. If a fire occurred, I expect it would certainly be an even greater potential hazard than this storm for the staff and patients. I think we'll probably find out the rate at which water entered the basement exceeded the pumps ability empty it. The solution will be larger, higher volume pumps and better water proofing for the generators and both water and fuel pumps. Neither of these solutions could have been executed in the week before the storm.
Mr. Morgan: Why do us a favor and tell the public HOW LONG THE FOSSIL FUELS WILL LAST? My knowledge is that we have only 40 years left for the oil. We have the moral responsability to find alternatives for our energy and is the responsible media duty to let the american people know about this time frame so they awake and urge the government to pursue solar and wind energy and not lo listen to those guided only by their greed. By the way as business people they are not so intelligent:: There is no money in their pocket when people are strike by desasters...!
Hey Piers I saw you getting all indignant about some generator failures.
Haven't you guys been marketing this as the storm of the century, SuperSandy, and all that?
Some stuff isn't going to function, dude. Some stuff is going to break down. It's just common sense.
Dummy.
I was just watching a bit of the rerun of Pierce and I gotta tell you...the only thing that entered my mind was: What is or how did this guy score this gig? He doesn't even come off human...one statement he made about how the hospital situations made him angry and it was unacceptable...wow, I see more emotion in the waters covering the streets...sorry Mr. Morgan, you're not fitting the American personality...hang up your mic and go stand in the water for awhile!!
What an incredible ass, Piers Morgan is. He has the audactiy to be snotily critical of the hospital administratiors who did an outstanding job while he sits in his ivory tower raking in the money for doing nothing more than running his disrepectful, arrogant mouth. I have never understood the CNN reasoning for hiring him to begin with when they had so much equally good talent with more respect and better manners. Kick him to the curb and do your viewers a favor.
It is extremely shameful that in the face of disaster someone can be so arrogant, and relentless in trying to blame the doctors at NYU for being unprepared.Instead of trying to spread anger and blame, go and find a way to help some of the ones who are in desperate need out there. How many people have u saved or helped lately? You remind me of that Trump guy who keeps up his relentless and stupid witch hunt about Obabma's citizenship. Sorry I have to call stupid when I see it.I never thought that I would be posting a comment like that to Piers Morgan but he has changed and so have I.
Here's what I think Piers was trying to do- another poster here said this:
" the question of what happened to lead up to that evacuation needs to be pressed."
The question isn't whether or not you like Piers. It isn't about whether you dislike 'foreigners'. It even isn't about his style of asking questions--- it's about "what happened to lead up to that evacuation" and using those disclosures, "how can it be prevented in the future?"
Maybe if you would get out of his crystal masion and get a real job that requires serious planning that affects real people, he could get some respect. As of now he only inspires disgust.
I don't see the need to answer that question at this particular time. There is a time and place for everything and now is the time to celebrate heroes. When someone is hurt, u don't go after the bad guy, or someone u think may be responsible for the injury right away. The normal human instinct is to do whatever possible to help or save the injured or hurt. That is what I felt was wrong with this interview. It seemed insensitive taking into consideration everything that's going on. I am not even American, I am Canadian and feel so strongly about this issue. We all have a common bond because we are all humans. Basic answer for all who wants to keep pressing for answers about failed generators, super storm sandy did it. Now if there is a better way to help generators to keep functioning in super storms, we are all for it. About Piers Morgan I think he is a great guy, just didn't share his same views during that interview. Hope he is more sensitive next time to people who saves lives everyday.
I have been watching Piers since his show started, I have never seem him so far off base on an issue. What bothers me most is that he has kept on talking about the generators day after day. I am surprised after seeing most people agree with my view, based on the comments here, that you continue badgering the hospitals about the generators after seeing most viewers disagree with your views on this matter. Its your show, you can run it your way, but its my tv and if I see another show that you continue with this I will do the only thing I can, change the channel and stop watching your show. I really hope this doesn't occur. Give it up you've made your point.
I usually enjoy your show.
A daily viewer...
You give him too much leeway. He should be sent the way of other disposable waste - to the jumk pile.
NYU Langone Medical Center should not have installed generators in the basement, that is the first mistake. No Generator and IT equipment should ever be installed below grade, same with Bellleveue Hospital. NYU knows very well the building is close to the river, storm or no storm the engineering design of back up power is wrong and someone should be fired. There are engineering specs available for these types of installations and they should have been implemented.
The generators aren't in the basement...they were on the 13th floor...the fuel supply was in the basement
