John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, is under investigation by the Defense Department for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to Jill Kelley, the woman whose complaints about e-mails from another woman led to the discovery of David Petraeus' affair and his eventual resignation."

• After the election, a new push on Syria: "The United States and its allies are gearing up for a new push to unify the Syrian opposition and topple President Bashar al-Assad."

• Labor to press Obama on tax hike for wealthy: "A cadre of top labor leaders is headed to the White House on Tuesday to press their concerns about the fiscal cliff."
