I have been asking everyone on Twitter that I can think of how can we make a difference. I didn't get one answer from any of you. It is time to put up or shut up. Thank god I found this Tweet.
The school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut is a tragedy beyond comprehension. But words of condolence aren't enough.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said: "Today is not the day… to engage in the usual Washington policy debates. I think that that day will come, but today is not that day."
But now IS the Time to talk about guns.
Join me in demanding a plan from President Obama and members of Congress to reduce gun violence in America NOW:
With all due respect:
The shooter got the guns from his mom. (Includinmg the car no one is trying to ban)
Did anyone say if the firearms were secured in a Gun Safe?
In NJ gun safes are tax-excemt.
In Montana gun safes are a tax-deduction.
(because MT doesn't have a state sales tax)
These are two GOOD common sense law that give the law-abaiding firearm owner an INCENTIVE to take a safer course by helping to make the gun safe more affordable.
If you notice most of the ciities in America that have the most restrictions on the law-abiding citizens seem to have the MOST crimes.
Gun Free Zones are UNSAFE.
ONLY the bad person has the advantage.
Your just one of the victims of NRA fear tactics and their pathetic propaganda excuse for owning a fire arm for self defence,
To hear this repeated excuse that guns are needed for self defence against the bad guys is so stupid.
All law abiding gun owners in the US try and make everyone else believe criminals out number them by 4or 5 to one, this is the only reasoning that fits this stupid defence argument. 270,000,000 guns in America are not stemming crime.
How long have you owned a gun and when was the last time you or another NRA member used their gun for self defence. Unfortunately, and hopefully unwittingly, by buying in to this archaic second amendment as a law abiding gun owner you are actually inadvertently adding to the gun culture issue and myth that we are ALL safer if we have a gun.
Merry Christmas and stay safe.
i think this is certainly tragic, but how come we are not discussing mental illness and the need for us to have more comprehensive services so that children are not falling between the cracks when they are becoming young disturbed adults. I think it is much more than a gun issue – it is a mental heath issue thats needs more comprehensive federal attention.
Dawn, you cannot treat something you don't know exists. Klebold, Harris, Loughner and now Lansa, NONE had a known diagnosed mental illness. It was speculated after death that Klebold had associative narcissim, a fancy word for anti-social, Loughner was diagnosed only during pre-trial. Like I said, you cannot treat what you do not know exists. And note: I think anger IS an issue however, that is not classified as a mental illness.
People HAVE been talking about mental health issues... privacy issues and associated roadblocks, access ot care, etc. But there are multiple concerns associated with gun violence and talking about one of them does not diminish the concern for the other issues. The most obvious issue associated with gun violence is.... access to GUNS. People that keep defending the "right" to own highly efficient killing tools with 30+ round magazines–you are wasting your time. You don't need them. "Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people! Guns are just inanimate objects!" Okay, then. Lets all go out and get our very own nuclear bomb. Even though I don't need it for hunting or basic self defense (as it true with an AR-15), it's just an inanimate object. Nuclear bombs don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people, right? Sounds like a pretty absurd argument and that's my point. Then there's the "evil people will do evil things no matter what" and "Timothy Mcveigh used fertilizer" There is no way that Adam Lanza would have been able to pull of something as sophisticated as what Timothy Mcveigh did. And the more sophisticated it is, the less likely it will be discovered and the more difficult it is to pull off–which makes it less likely to happen than shooting someone with a gun that is as easy to buy and use as a pack of gum. We don't keep hearing about people being killed with u-haul trucks filled with fertilizer. We keep hearing about people being killed–thousands and thousands of them–killed with guns. Around a quarter of a million of them killed with guns in the U.S. since 9-11. Adam Lanza killed 26 people in a matter of seconds with THAT weapon. Regardless of how much time he spent thinking about it or planning it, the fact is NO planning is required. He could have grabbed THAT rifle at any time and drove down to the school and shot scores of people–as easy as going out and mowing the lawn (or easier). ALL of the victims had MULTIPLE gunshot wounds, some more than 10. The police said he fired "hundreds of rounds" and had hundreds of rounds on hand. On the other hand, on the same day, a man in China attacked some elementary school children, a similar number were injured but NONE died. He had a knife. The issue has to do with the EASE of access; that little or NO planning is needed; and scores of people can be KILLED in seconds with these kinds of weapons. Had the police arrived just a minute later, how many more would have died? 20? 50? 70? How does that compare to the "right" of someone with a gun fetish to dress up and play rambo with an assault rifle?
Taking the guns out of the hands of the mentally ill can occur quicker (than treatment for diagnosed mental illness) and we need some changes right now. Treatment for the mentally ill is not a quick fix, yes it will be addressed (I believe). Since we cant be behind closed doors to know who is teaching their mentally ill family members how to use assault rifles either, well....gun control over those types of weapons seems the answer right now.
*I meant to say that something like what McVeigh did is MORE likely (not less likely) to be discovered because it was far more sophisticated than just grabbing a gun. Which is why we don't have an epidemic of people being killed with u-haul trucks full of fertilizer. Gun violence is the epidemic.
It's extremely difficult to diagnose the brain differences that contribute to both mental health and neuro developmental issues. I've moderated community and online forums for years and have suffered with parents who have struggled to find answers from under- educated professionals who mean well but often do more harm than good. We're just now starting to use new brain science and imaging technologies and genetic research to identify brain anomalies and target therapies. It's only after those in need can be accurately diagnosed and treated that we can even begin to discuss putting restrictions on those in need in terms of gun ownership. And unfortunately, legal moves that could potentially discriminate against those with mental or neuro conditions will only make those in need reluctant to seek diagnosis.
There is only so much the president can do, or anyone else at that. It is a sad situation for these beautiful kids to lose their lives. It is sad how now all the media is now redirecting this tragedy to politics, and the news media is loving it. I mean I am glad to hear what is going around the world, but gun control? What about the person behind the gun? How far are we going to take this to ensure America that no one will ever get shot. The fact is there are evil people around the world, ill, sick, and people who just do not care about anyone or themselves.
So lets limit guns, okay check...But now we still have guns check check... Oh yeah we still have crazy people around the world who might not decide to use a gun but might find an alternative.. check...Face it...America is crazy, the world is filled with evil, and all we can do as a nation is depend on God, pray for one another, and hope for the best outcome out of this horrible tragedy.
America must wake up & put everything on the table. Piers working in psyc for a decade something I am sure of is mental illness can happen at any time in a person life. No matter age, economic class or race. Events in people life that were perfectly "normal" can lead to mental illness. Point is anyone can become mentally ill at anytime and we cannot predict theses massacres. But government can control the weapons. It’s not just about illegal guns or legal guns its all guns in this country must be controlled. Sorry only real way to have gun control is to not have the public purchase guns period. 2nd amendment did not take into account for are current culture.
Our heart is weeping for the lives lost in this tragedie at Sandy Hook Elementry School lets reflect what going on in other parts of the world to children just like our own in United States. We are a very sick country. Seeing this debate by Mr Morgan gives me some hope. We are all part of this world. We all feel the same pain, we all have the same dream.
" In the US, mass child killings are tragedies. In Pakistan, mere bug splats"
Barack Obama's tears for the children of Newtown are in stark contrast to his silence over the children murdered by his drones.
I love how passionate Piers is on this gun control. Way to go Piers. Keep fighting the good fight for us. For those of us who don't have a public platform. My thoughts are the same as yours. There is absolutely no reason we need assault weapons or killing machines out on the streets of America. Anyone who thinks we do is a little off in the head themselves. A handgun can be used for protection. You sure as heck don't need an assault weapon.
Ditto. Way too go Piers. I appreciate the continued attention you are giving to the issue, support your approach and agree with your position. I have no doubt that you won't let this issue fade away. Twenty years ago on December 14, 1992 there was a mass-shooting at Simon's Rock College of Bard. A professor and student were killed and four other students wounded. The gunman's rampage was halted only because his automatic weapon jammed. I was on campus that day and to my shame I didn't write one letter after supporting gun control. Twenty years later, 300 million guns and the violence is worse. How can anyone say more guns make us safer?
This is all so very sad. However, I think the crazies will strike again, not necessarily using any type of firearms, but using manure like Timothy McVeigh did. Can we put a ban on manure?
This afternoon I heard someone on the radio proposing that everyone who owns a gun should have to take liability insurance for it. This is a great idea that could solve two problems, first it will limit the number of guns by making people think twice if they really need a gun or multiple guns and secondly it will also bring more funds to the insurance providers that can be used for paying insurance claims.
Great idea. Perhaps then we can move towards requiiring an insurance premium for your free speech, perhaps some words you say hurt someone's feelings.... or should we insure our votes? You choose to relegate your rights to those that you believe are valuable for your own sake, as opposed to valueing the entire list of such rights. This would imply that your logic is better than those that surrendered all in pursuit of life, liberty and happiness... the founding fathers. I am a vet who sacrificed much, as well as my brothers too; We sacrificed much to defend this country and the beliefs that make it up, all of them. You carelessly toss, picking and choosing, as you see fit.
You're an idiot !
How about if everyone who buys or owns a DEADLY weapon (firearm) has to have a permit! What a concept!
Everyone has to have vehicle registration. Most every where in the U.S. you have to get a little license tag for your pet to wear! ....... Background checks should be conducted for any one that buys a firearm; this means that legal private gun sales will have to be by consignment only. Not only should military style weapons sales and accessories be banned from the general public, but they should be illegal to own! Besides, 30.06 or 30.30 rifles and the like are perfectly adequate for hunting; they can fire multiple rounds before reloading, but they are not semi-automatic assault weapons with large magazines!
Finally, telephone help lines used to be pretty prevalent but now they are sadly a thing of the past. With all the stresses and isolation of this modern world, people that are unstable can probably be more readily provoked and lost in the "shuffle". We so need well promoted nationwide 1-800 numbers where people who need help with mental health issues can have a real person to talk to, and get the help and referrals that they need.
So, if you want to legally have a firearm to protect your home or to hunt, or to go to a shooting range, you would have to buy a legal firearm from a shop, gun show, or consignment store; have a background check, and apply for a permit. An upstanding, normal, law-abiding citizen should have no problem getting the legal firearm(s) that they want; otherwise, if there are problems they shouldn't have the weapon, period! Sure, there will be illegal "contraband" out there for a while, but we have to start somewhere, and start now!
Piers Morgan is a pompous and arrogant idiot and should go back to his native UK and stop acting like he is better or more qualified to judge Americans and our laws...
People are going after the wrong culprit. Its not gun control or mental health issues that are the [problem. Its the BULLETS that do the actually damage. When car seats, cribs, medicine and food products were harming children they got removed the store shelfs. Why can t they do the same for BULLETS that are the real Killers. Remove and ban BULLETS . People can have their right to bear arms. They DON T have the right to bear BULLETS.
Explain to my how with 15 of the worlds top 25 mass shootings in the past 50 years and with 103 of the 142 weapons found from the 60 US mass murders in the past 30 years being semi-automatic handguns and/or assault rifles people still feel that more guns is the solution?
Well logan it's simple. Look at where they all took place: schools, churches and other places where the person doing the shooting had an almost 100% chance that nobody would be shooting back. Let me ask you: If you and I were in a room with other people, ans suddenly a man burst in and began shooting. I'm standing next to you with my own gun drawn and the criminal gunman points his weapon in your direction. Would you rather I fired and save your life as well as others, or would you rather I stood and let him blow your idiot head off and then kill me too?
While the name calling is not necessary you failed to answer my question. I have had guns held to my head on more than one occasion, never by a police officer, and managed to walk away without a shot ever being fired. You talk about law-abiding citizens yet seem to leave out the fact that many of these people ARE law-abiding citizens until that point. You automatically assume that if guns are outlawed (which I am NOT suggesting) then only the "criminals" will have them. Yet in countries where this has already taken place their gun-related crimes have dropped substantially. We have more guns than we do adults in this country and our gun-related crimes are outrageous! While you have the right to feel safe by owning guns what about those people who have the right to feel safe and do not want to own guns.
Mike, Stop talking rubbish! Here we go again because there was no one in the school with a gun & it's the guns that are the extension of the people holding the guns, it's the two that cause the killings, the person/s carrying the guns & the guns that are filled with ammunition that kill the children/people/men & women who are killed on a regular basis with these obscene weapons. Why, can't you gun lovers get that?
wel mike..lets put it this way ..at the shooting at theatare , if other 25 people had guns and when gunman had started shooting and other people who had guns also had started shooting and there might be chance that gunman could have got killed but alos there may few other people who had guns also could have got killed and after words..how would you know Who was the actual bad guy..who had started it...becasue now instead of one dead gunmand there are 8 of them..who had guns.....if every one carris guns like you say...then people who gets in to roadr rage..they will hit one another while driving...you honked on me..how dare you....shoot ...how dare you pass me like that...shootttt....
where is safty here....people cut in line arguments start shoot....
just imagine having the guns allowed in sucha places like schools....malls...workplaces..i don't know what does make people like you think that MORE GUNS LESS CRIME....it is just impossible...
I am not saying guns should be totallu ban...but Rules and Regulation to get gun...and getting bulletts...has to has to be made..strict..where people would think 10 times before buying gun and before using it...there are way to regulate the gun access...and with stricter rules and regulation such crimes can be prevented.
and let me tell you..only people will support the Easy Gun access....who has not lost their loved ones..like parents..child..brther sister in sucha mass killings...pout your feet in the shoes of those parents who lost their children..!!
if the gun access was not as easy as it is...this killer would not have done it..it could have been prevented...!!
Mike, regardless of the other comments, you are absolutely correct. A threat undetered, is an action waiting to happen. I am a vet, and I believe that some things are really just this simple. People are responsible for what people do. That has not changed, and never will, no matter how much good intentioned people try to make it into something other than that. I know that I value my ability to protect my family and it is not one that I will give up, and if people would stop waiting for the government to take care of them, more people would be apt to act accordingly as well.
Piers – I agree with you 1,000 percent!! You must think Americans are insane! What happened to America? Thank you, Piers for saying what we all want to say.
No, actually he's not saying what we all think. He's saying what misinformed, scared idiot liberals are thinking. The fact of the matter is, as long as you don't want to own guns, great, whatever but you sure as heck do NOT have the right to dictate to me what my means of defending myself are. I would be more than happy to let a gunman blow your head off despite the fact that I ALWAYS have a gun on my person to defend myself with, if you really felt that dying was more to your liking than my using my gun to save your worthless life.
Mike, if what you theorize is true, why in Australia has gun homicides gone DOWN by 50% since 2000? They banned assault rifles and semi auto hand guns in 1994.
I agree with you 100% Janine. I'm proud to watch Piers fight for what is right. No one needs military guns for protection. They are slaughter machines with no place in American society.
Piers states that he wants to have a "national discussion" about gun ownership in America yet, every time someone with an opposing view speaks, Piers trys to shout them down and win through volume, hoaky intimidation, and his ability to run to a commercial. That is not "a discussion". That is Piers trying to impose his British opinion on anyone who disagrees. That is weak and illegitimate.
Secondly, anyone making the argument that "assault weapons" aren't necessary for hunting is missing the point. Our forefathers didn't fight to build this great country and amongst all their other tremendous contribution, establish the right to bear arms, so that we as Americans can hunt dear for God's sake. The 2nd amendment exists so that the average citizen can be equally equipped in small armament as that of the military so that if the military or police attempts to unduly impose its will on the average citizen, that citizen has the firepower to shoot back and make them think twice. It is precisely because these former Brits (or Americans intimately familiar with their plight) were oppressed under the power of authority that they established the ability of EVERY American to take up arms in a revolt. Back then they used muskets; just like the military did. In kind, if today's military is using semi-automatic rifles with high caliber rounds, then so too should the average American have access to those same weapons. Anything less will hardly cause pause.
How ironic that none of his "respected guests" have any real experience with guns. Deepak apparently thinks that a musket takes "20 minutes to load". How absurd. I have shot blackpowder muzzle-loading muskets many times growing up and the only thing keeping us from reloading in 30 seconds was the risk of cook-off if the barrel was still hot: Still slow by today's standards but certainly not 20 minutes. Likewise, Piers admits to have "talked to experts". Let me tell you, there is no understanding without experience and Piers and his guests have none, and thus no credibility.
I have spent about a half hour watching and listening to your interview, if that's what you want to call it. You have no business conducting an interview or serving as a moderator to a program that needs to present accurate facts and information which will hopeful provide a solution to help prevent tragedies like the recent school shooting. You my friend are not from here and should not be moderating (if that's what you want to call it) you need to go back to your country. You had some very good people available to discuss the issue intelligently and you Sir allowed your opinion and only your opinion seem to matter. This issue is much larger than you. You are a prime example to distorted ignorant journalism and the ignorant distorted skewed media. Good day, Daniel J. Teed, Wexford, PA
My heart goes out to all those families who have lost loved onesie these senseless act.
Exactly! Well said. Piers states that he wants to have a "national discussion" about gun ownership in America yet, every time someone with an opposing view speaks, Piers trys to shout them down and win through volume, hoaky intimidation, and his ability to run to a commercial. That is not "a discussion".
If America is so terrible why is Piers Morgan even here and why do we have somebody not even American telling us what we need to do? He needs to do a little more research before he opens his mouth, the firearms were stolen from the mother who obtained them legally, the problem is she did not secure the firearms knowing she had a mentally unstable child in the house. Why should one unstable person decide laws for 100,000,000. plus law-abiding gun owners. Do the math this doesn't add up to a fraction of 1% of the gun owners in America. Also Piers needs to know that a semi-auto AR-15 will only fire one round per trigger pull not the "thousand rounds per minute" he keeps talking about that would take a full auto AR-15 which are illegal unless you are a Class 3 owner which requires a intense background check , fingerprinting and permission from the Chief Law Enforcement where he resides.
Janine, I respect your right to view things differently. Which is more than your man P. Morgan can do...or has done.
I WOULD NOT EXPECT Piers Morgan to understand he from England hes also wanted for Questing in his Homeland, Dont believe a word he says hes just looking for ratings, Molon Labe
unreal the ar 15 can do as much damaged as a hand gun or shot gun or any hunting rifle but all we hear is ar 15 get your facts right cnn all guns cause damage. The 223 round and a hunting round that can be a 308 or 30-06 will do alot more damage then a 223 round yet you are clueless.
Just not accurate! The .223 is designed to tumble when it hits something. Furtherit is meant too fragment more than conventional rounds. It was designed for the military!
I forgot, hi capacity magazines that shotguns and hunting rifles don't have make them FAR more lethal.
Anyone who actually believes that guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, like myself contribute to a criminal problem is in fact an imbecile. Ok, so disarm those who would obey such laws to do so. Now what, innocent people are left defenseless. That's a ridiculous formula. Then what, new legislation that mandates we can't protect our faces from someone throwing a punch at us? Whats the difference? You're telling what means we should or should not be allowed to have at our disposal to defend ourselves from any given threat. I happen to be a licensed armed guard, however there are no provisions granting me special consideration in purchasing handguns. I have to purchase as a regular citizen. How is preventing regular citizens from obtaining guns making my job possible?
Are you willing to put your Law Abiding Responsiblility where your Gun is?
Are you willing to take responsiblility for some else's actions if your gun is stolen?
If so, that can your contribution to a solution.
What are you afraid of, Mike? Are you so fearful, so small, that the only way you can feel safe or comfortable in a public place is to carry a gun? Does a gun make you more of a man? Is the issue you're afraid of criminals, or are you just afraid?
This is the type of moron your up against, needs a free horse and cowboy boots with his next gun purchase!
The mistake that both gun supporters and opposers keep making in this argument is to focus on the mentally ill that get access to guns. While there is a portion of the killings that are the work of mentally unstable individuals, we sbouldn't lose sight of the accidental gun deaths caused in homes, stray bullet killings, gang wars, stalkers, domestic disputes, disgruntled employee, etc. Each year, there are 30,000 deaths caused by firearms in the US, and that includes over 600 deaths of children as the result of accidental shootings in their own home. About 38% of all gun related deaths take the lives of people under he age of 25. We have about 300 million guns in this country – 5% of the world population, but half of all the guns. There are many responsible gun owners, of course. But by the sheer number of guns, and the year after year death of thousands at the hands of firearms, it is obvious that some people are careless ( in the cases of adults that do not lock and store their firearms in the house, or who accidentally shoot and kill a family member that they mistook for anintruder), and some people should never be allowed to go anywhere near guns (mentally impaired). We can't staunchly defend guns and deflect attention away by just putting the blame on mental illness. The mass shootings are sickening, and justifiably get all the attention. But the 225 deaths caused by the top 15 mass shooting murders in the US pales in comparison to the 30,000 deaths EVERY YEAR at the hands of guns.Let responsible gun owners maintain their protective handguns and hunting rifles, but let's get all the assault weapons out of the reach of the mentally ill and the irresponsible. Mental illness is a part of the problem, and needs to be addressed better through healthcare. But the major issue, because of the size and scale of the mess, is better gun control and responsibility.
We now have gun stores running out of inventory on AR15 semi-automatic assault weapons, which now adds more firearms to population where too many are already floating around. Gun owners that are responsible can really help ensure that the right controls are put in place that don't infringe on their rights but make a safer world so that we never have to see 20 innocent kids and heroic teachers die senselessly.
Well said, Kevin.
Despite the uproar to ban guns, thousands of Americans are out in droves buying guns. Why is that?
Why? It seems to be part of the national psyche. There is an irrational fear that reasonable restrictions – on the people who can own and on the types of weapons that can be sold – somehow infringes on a person's legal right to have a firearm.
Because we love to hunt, collect, and have fun it a safe way...When you start talking about taking our gun!! We go to a buy another gun mode because we can it is America, and we have that right. Why not? Now on the other hand, the government already took God out of school, ohhhh but they won't take him off our money?? (make up your mind)
The government is full of crap stop trying to control us we are not going to ever be a socailism nation...
Is it me or is America just terrified of government intervention? Hasn't this gun obsession not evolved from a misunderstanding of the original premise of the Second Amendment? No other developed country is as government-adverse as the USA and no other has as much gun crime.
I think you wold be better to find a different source of reference data than Marvel comic books pal.
Your responses suggest you believe you are living in a Marvel comic book Mike. I like an intelligent debate. I doubt it will come from you with all due respect.
Yes, there are other countries with more gun crime, you need to do your research. It is the uninformed like yourself that scare others into believing the wrong information.
Andrew, you are correct. Our 2nd amendment was not mistakenly understood at all, in fact, the 2nd amendment as it was originally drafted, and later approved, was purposefully meant to protect the new citizen from the imposition of colonization without being able to defend themselves. THAT was the original intent. That intent is just as important to us as our right to vote, our right to speak, our right to have fair representation.... you get the idea. Today, not much has changed. There are still volumes of individuals, some with merit, some without, that believe the need to have such arms are important to keeping secure the very freedoms that blood was shed for. That has been the premise for many man defending this country. I personally do not think its relevant or not if there is sound reasoning behind the desire to keep the 2nd amendment in place as it stands, its inclusion as one of our bedrocks of freedom is far more important that what I think, or what I dont think. It is a part of the whole, and as such, having borne the cost of many lives in defending that philosophy, that right.... that is enough for me, and should be enough for anyone else.
Because our founding fathers told us they had given us a country, and it was up to us to keep it. Many have forgotten that little fact over the years, especially the last 40 or so.
Great dialogue ~ and action IS required.Piers you should review the US closest neighbor to the North ~
Consider Canada, a nation, which – like its American neighbor – has a pioneer culture and a strong affinity for guns.
Such massacres rarely occur north of the border.According to Statistics Canada, this country’s homicide-by-guns rate amounted to 0.5 per 100,000 in 2011. In contrast, the U.S. rate for 2010 was 3.6 per 100,000, or more than seven times the Canadian rate. But private gun ownership in Canada is widespread. With a ratio of 23.8 firearms per 100 people, Canada has the thirteenth highest rate in the world. (U.S. is at the very top ) PLUS
Firearm-related homicides in Canada at lowest point in 50 years, Statistics Canada reports ~ http://www.canada.com/Firearm+related+homicides+Canada+lowest+point+years+Statistics+Canada+reports/7651344/story.html
Firearm-related homicides in Canada reached its lowest point in almost 50 years last year, according to new data.
In fact, of the 598 homicides reported in Canada in 2011, 35 per cent were stabbing-related, while 27 per cent were shooting-related, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday. Beatings and strangulations accounted for most of the remaining cases.Overall, there were 44 more homicides nationwide in 2011 compared to the year before — the first increase in three years — with Alberta and Quebec driving the increase. But while the homicide rate went up seven per cent last year, it has remained “relatively stable” over the past decade, Statistics Canada said.
Difficult to see your point although I sense I agree with you. Are you saying we (Canada) are an example of how you can own guns wihout the massacres? How effective gun control reduces gun crime while allowing logical gun ownership?
How about take a look at the neighbor to the south where the cartel and other criminals are driving their citizens illegally into the U.S. and Mexico possesses strict gun laws. I don't hear or see any of you cowardly liberals bringing that up. Piers not everyone can afford persoally security like your loud mouth self.
Good stats and excellent statistics. Canada's gun laws are far from perfect, and the gun registtry has proven to be agreat financial drain with little proven effect. We also must remember that the culture and demographics in Canada is really very different than the US. It is far more than just our gun laws in Canada that contribute to our low homicide rate.
War hungry USA do not have to find a new war. They are at war with themselves. There are as many victims of gun crimes in one year as there were soldiers killed in some wars where American soldiers participated in.
At this rate, give it another 10 to 20 years and the problem will be solved. There won't be a soul left alive....
There HAS to be ammunition regulation/control. If you can't pass a background check, you don't need a single bullet!!!!
The problem in this country right now for those who own and favor guns is that they feel they've been persecuted by the opposite groups who want strict gun control. I'm in favor of more regulated procedure for those who wish to acquire fire arms as well as banning war weapons/assault weapons altogether. I fully understand the second amendment rights to all of us who live in this country, and I don't think it's necessary to ban all firearms – it's unrealistic.
However, the ordinal citizens do not need war style weapons and assault weapons – those are for military and law enforcement officers. Yes, every person has the right to protect their family and themselves from any harm, but when you look at the statistics and numbers relating homicides by guns are stagnant. It's unacceptable. If we let other civilians and teachers armed in school, malls, on street corners without any appropriate training,- what do you expect to happen.
Our duty as an adult is to find a common ground and find a solution where all of us can live our lives without a fear of being shot and killed in public places or in own homes. For that, we must educate ourselves, teach our children well, restructure the way we take care of mentally ill and protect our children.
It's time for all of us to stop being selfish. Without love and respect for one another, the tragedy like Newtown will happen again.
Part of the debate that is overlooked: gun supporters speak about their need to defend themselves against the "bad guys" with guns. My question: Why do so many "bad guys" have guns? The bad guys in other developed nations don't have guns like those in America. There is a genesis to this.....gun obsession. And it originates from the Second Amendment.
Ok, lets get rid of the bill of rights becuae its inconvenient, or just pick and choose depending on which party is in power, idiotic comments liem yours are the slippery slope every gun owner fears, the bill of rights are the corner stone of our laws, NON NEGOTIABLE, you like other countries and their gun laws? Your free to move. Even if 2000 kids had been killed it still should not make a difference, thousands of kids have died in syria in the past year during their uprising, anyone care? Any vigils? Any actions by the administration? Why , those children are not human beings? They dont have parents and loved ones? Your emotions are so convenient to push your political agenda. Next time think before you type.
Pierce is not a citizen, why is he trying to change our bill of rights? Why must we be like uk or other countries in europe? If you hate it so much here just go back, your colonialist ansestors destroyed entire civilizations using guns and stole entire generations of lives for money. Im so sick of your garbage pierce, shut your mouth about U.S laws, you have no vote, why dont you tell your hollywood buddies like brad pitt to stop making movies like 7 psychopaths, which is all kids are talking about. I cant wait for the mid term elections so if gun bans are passed the southern and midwest democrats on every level get decimated like 1996.
You are just another sad sad sad human being in this country who is trying to hide behind the 2nd Amendment. Do people realize that when that Amendment was written into our bill of rights, it was in response to the control that England wanted to have over this new nation? If our forefathers would have known that ignorant people like you and so many other people in the US would use this amendment to justify (and hide behind) being able to own assault rifles, they would not have written it into the Bill of Rights. People need to remember that the Bill of Rights was written in 1776, and yes, it is the backbone to the United States, and we are proud to be Americans, however, times have changed in the past 237 years. Bottom line: PEOPLE NEED TO QUIT HIDING BEHIND THE 2ND AMENDMENT. THERE IS NO REASON AN AVERAGE CITIZEN NEEDS A DAMN ASSAULT RIFFLE!
Lauren educate yourself before you comment
I DONT STAND BEHIND THE 2ND AMENDMENT I STAND IN FRONT OF IT WITH MY GUN
PROUD GUN OWNER (JUST LIKE THE MAJORITY IN THE U.S.)
I, like many across this country, have been involved in a rigorous and painstaking discussion about the status of guns in this country. I've covered, at length, the merits of being able to have a gun for personal protection but also an undying trepidation about the unhealthy attachments to guns and the inherent risks they pose. It is important to note that while I am an ardent supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I am also cognizant of the fact that there needs to be universal set parameters and guidelines to accompany that freedom. I have noticed an undue emphasis on self-defense, with little attention given to the addictions to power and autonomy that guns provide, even in relation to outsiders with guns. Likewise, to counter-act the notion that guns are dangerous, people are quick to point out that other ubiquitous commodities can be fashioned and/or used in such a way as to achieve the kind of devastation that we've seen over recent months. I have thus fervently contested that line of thought on the grounds that it diverts attention away from the appeal of guns, and attempts to undermine some very important differences. First and foremost, what makes ballistic weapons so desirable is the fact that they don't require a high level of proficiency to operate, and require very little physical ability to be effective. Secondly, guns don't require you to be in close proximity with your target, they're easily portable, and with the right features, can cause destruction at a very fast pace and on a massive scale. Furthermore, some people are so overwrought with a sense of power and invincibility when wielding a gun that, even for a rational mind, it consumes them and clouds their better judgement.
Yo...Guns DON'T KILL ......Neither do cars kill people....People who are drunk and driving cars kills people.....People who are texting while driving cars kills people....Car that are not operated safely or safe to drive or ride in kill people. We have laws that have an effect on the problem. No one is taking away your right to own or drive a car....Unless you can't follow basic rules and regulations both as an owner or seller of the product line. HOW many kids steal their mom's car and kills dozens of other kids?????
The analogy that guns or cars don't kill people, people do, is nonsensical. Cars were/are not designed to kill people. Guns are.
if you think a car is not designed to kill, then you come stand in front of mine. here is what he was trying to say
" the gun not the person is the problem. "CONTEXT" dont take things out of context hint...
Have you even looked at the psychotropic drugs these murderers have been on? What are the common factors besides the guns? have you even asked yourself an intelligent question Mr. Morgan? You know you are being told to argue against guns by the government and you have no backbone to stand up against it. You wish you were free and could stand up for yourself. You can't even fight back in Britain because if you are jumped by thugs and you fight back and kick their butt, you go to jail for assaulting the criminal. That is STUPID!!! @Franscois, you are an idiot and do not even understand what it means to be free. If you were free, you would not even make that comment that is uneducated and asinine.
@ Piers Most people will not go to the root of the issue. Gun control, more guns, less guns, more cops, whatever your arguments are, are not the issue. One issue is the heart and taking God out of our schools. Another issue is the blanket drugging of our kids because they have a self esteem issue or think a thought that tells a Psychiatrist they need to medicate, when the medication is known to have MAJOR, MAJOR issues and a side effect is what you are seeing. Question: Are you going to ban cars because one of these doped up people by the big Pharmas takes their medication to feel better and they end up losing it and driving into a bunch of kids in a school playground or plow through a bunch of kids walking down the street with their teacher? THAT IS STUPID isn't it? Don't tell America what to do you blind leading the blind personalities that would not know True Freedom if it bit you in the butt. Because you have never tasted freedom you cannot even get close to comprehending our mindset. As you can tell, I did not even talk about Guns much on this. I know this email will fall on some deaf ears, but I hope it gets people to think outside the box and find real solutions to our problems. Banning guns will make us more vulnerable. Crime is down below England levels where guns are allowed and crime is above where guns are not allowed. These are facts and as sad as the children dying are, its more sad that not ONE teacher was able to defend themselves due to LAWS. I hold the people who wrote those laws as THE solution accountable for all of the deaths. I hold them accountable because they provided no other protection knowing they left our teachers and our children exposed to evil. No God means evil reigns. No way to defend ourselves, evil reigns. Laws protecting criminals, evil reigns.
As Commander in Chief I would immediately order a military armed security person (at least one per school) and they would be in place each day until further notice. This may be the long term solution along with the banning of all automatic and semi automatic gun ownership. I would increase police fire power. All hunting and target practice would be by special timed permit to Homeland Security and stiff penalties for violations.
Cameras must be installed at all entrances to schools immediately.
Is the right defend mean with deadly force? Can a limit be placed on the amount of ammunition purchased in a time period? Can certain guns require a different composition of bullet?
I think this unfortunate event provides an opportunity for the Newtown folks to make a real tribute to the deceased ones if they decide to become the first gun-free town in the US in their loving memory. Imagine the impact of this gesture on rest of us every where. I do not know if this is a possibility but nevertheless I wanted to share my thought as we are all struggling as to how to deal with this horrific situation.
I thinkall issues need to be put on the table and talked about. why would anyone even need these high powered weapons?
Can someone tell me a GOOD reason why people need to have a gun that does NOT include collecting, target practice or hunting? Innocent people and children losing their lives because America needs to satisfy these so called hobbyists is completely ignorant and unacceptable – immediate action should be taken to get rid of all guns... period.
I suppose u would ban my knife if i could stab twenty people in a minute
The British were successful in outlawing guns and melting down guns after world war one. Unfortunately the rest of the world didn't play by those rules. England was forced to beg for weapons from the US and Canada when world war two started. England needed those firearms to defend their country. Without the assistance of private rifle donations many British soldiers would have been unarmed during the early days of world war two. England came close to being a small part of Germany. How soon we forget.
I am glad I tuned in yesterday to your show, I am glad you lost it and called the man from the rifle association a stupid, idiotic, dangerous man. It shocks me that the gun sales are soaring, it hurts me that millions if people choose the right to carry a gun over someone else's right to live. Something big needs to happen, something huge...a walk, a march or a Forest Gump run where people join and walk, march or run together for their lives. This is not the wild, Wild West. It's 21st century so unless ET is invading the Americas, civilians don't need guns, and even then those guns might be useless
Piers is the stupid, idiotic, dangerous man. Apparently you haven't been to Mexico lately or the deep south in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California or you would see that this 21st century is worse than the wild, wild west. You are the type of people that wish someone would come to their rescue from the evil that pervades the cartel.
There is too much discussion on guns which is not the real problem. I hope that Piers begins real discussion on the mental health of America's children in America. The child sitting alone at the school lunch table, the child that gets bullied at school, and the child that is the loaner at school. These children are living in their minds in silence. Our schools are not trained or financed to do something about it. Want to get rid of school shootings? Cure the issues these children face and you wont have ANY school shootings. Guns are not the problem.
Piers you officially made me know that you have an agenda. When a guest just now commented about the mental issue you replied that to you it's about the guns. You are in my opinion not responsible in covering this issue. You have allowed your emotions to create tunnel vision to see the problem of mental health.
Gun Tax. More gun tax. You want to own a firearm. Then let's see gun taxes at the local, state and federal levels. Oh and every bullet you buy will be taxed. Then all the revenue collected can go to enforcement of laws to try and keep guns out of the hands of evildoers. Better, more extensive background checks, the maintenance of a national well-connected database, etc. Also, the revenue can be used to shore up mental health services at the local state and federal levels, and to improve security at schools.
Of course i realize that many of the gun proponents are also staunch opponents of taxes. I don't care. Some might call this a sin tax. I don't. I call it a luxury tax. You have the luxury of the right to keep and bear arms in this country so you'll just have to pay more to exercise the luxury of that right.
Would a ban on semi auto weapons prevent future massacres, or do you feel that they would increase?
Without the assault weapon these people could not shoot the amount of people they did. Also there may have been a better chance to stop the shooter.
Looking from Canada, I wonder if America has the political will to make the changes that are necessary to reduce the incidents related to guns. I am thinking you will talk about it for a few weeks or months and then do nothing. In Canada you can own handguns and rifles just like in the United States and yet we have only approx 150 murders a year by guns and in your country you have almost 10,000 murders a year. Why? Gun control!!!!
Keep your opinion in canada
Thank God we kicked your ass in1812 and ended up in a sane country with an appropriately designed government
I would hate to think how we would be if you won.
Thank you God.
I truly believe that if you are a LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, you absolutely have the right to own a gun(s). However, regardless of whether you follow the laws and are responsible THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON A CITIZEN NEEDS AN ASSAULT RIFLE!
Gun sales have gone crazy. There should be more control over assault weapons and large capacity clips. There should also be stricter laws when it comes to gun shows or stop them all together.
All of you downgrading assault rifles are idiots! At 30-40 feet (the farthest Adam lanza could have possibly been) A 5.56 AR15 round will go right through a person. A 9mm hollow point will rip them to shreds! So in turn a 9mm hollow point is way more dangerous than an AR15. So you idiots need to stop saying that these guns are the problem! Guns do not kill people... People kill people!
Maybe they should ban people...or at least have a license to have a baby. That is such a ridiculous argument that guns don't kill people...People kill people....Who said that NRA? I am not an American citizen but I love America. In Canada you can own guns just like in the United States, but we have gun control and only 150 murders a year related to guns compared to the United States 10,000 murders. So if people kill people and not guns....no disrespect intended then the only conclusion that I can think of by your argument is that in America you have a lot of crazy people. I do not think that is the case but you said it not me......
How can we expect teachers to stand up to gunmen when the police could not, the North Hollywood shootout, two gunmen kept police at bay.
I was very upset Friday when I saw the news story and have been following on CNN ever since.
I was dating a guy recently who just got a gun permit. I was very upset because he has been seeing 2 therapist for his depression and anxiety issues. I think it is terrible that he isn't controlled on medication yet (adjustments made every couple weeks for months now) and a therapist signed off on approval for him to obtain a gun permit! When I asked why he wanted a gun, he said he probably wouldn't get one (but had already informed me his Father had several guns and he would buy one from him). I told his Sister recently that he has not been very happy or controlled on meds and I do NOT agree with him having a gun permit and shouldn't be allowed to get a weapon.
I am upset with the government that we house killers in jail where they eat, sleep, live their lives after taking the life of another. How much money as a country are we paying now to "interview", study, and keep the crazy guy who killed so many in a movie theater? We don't have good mental health facilities for those who are mentally ill but we have a lot of funds going to keep those alive who have no value for the lives of others. Families, while not to blame for bringing an emotionally challenged child into the world, should be held accountable for their actions if simply thrown into society with the knowledge of their illnesses.
Control gun laws.... not one person outside of the armed forces should have a military style weapon!!!
Get your friend off the mind altering drugs.
Work is the best therapy.
Even a pet or outdoor recreation is better.
BTW, FYI, Beware of the liberal bias media that slants the truth to help the liberals acheive their agenda.
If you do your research you will find these so-called "assualt weapeons" aren't what you think.
The .223 caliber used is actually illegally for use in states for deer and elk huntinmg because they are under powered.
Because they have a black tactical look and plastic stock & forearm they are called assualt weapons.
If you painted your wheels and bumper black on your car they would call it an assualt weapon.
Same motor, same transmission, different look.
Kind of like that black tactical verizon phone called the ROCK???
They are using anything they can to gather public support to take away YOUR GOD-GIVEN BIRTH RIGHS protected by the BILL OF RIGHTS.
Which btw, make US different than england who we wanted to get away from so we can be FREE Nation with the Right to own a race car, race boat or Firearm to protect OUR families with. To have Freedom of Speech, Religion and be the best WE can be. To have Free Enterprise and NOT live under the rule of king george. The 2A is the one Right that Protects ALL the rest and that's why they are so determined to take it away from YOU.
BTW, If there were NO more guns in world and we didn't even know what they looked like because we never seen one. The kid in Colorado could have been a brain surgeon.
He could have been doing frankenstein experiments on people and no one would have known.
He could have killed hundreds of people on the operating table instead.
So, if there were no guns he would have been the same misguided person.
Food for thought....
It's not the guns....it's the liberalism pushed in OUR schools that is killing America.
I dunno if guns are the issue. People who choose to be destructive can find other ways to do so. We need to talk about these folks who do this? We need to talk about our society. I don't have the answers, I am willing to dscuss some possibilities.
@ Logan. You have had a gun put to your MANY times and talked your way out...please
I said on more than one occasion, not many. People do have the ability to be talked down from things. If you do not think so then you it seems that you have little to no hope to doing anything with non-violence. With the correct words of persuasion it is possible to talk people down from doing just about anything. You honestly think that everyone does it just because they want to kill people? Have you ever thought that they are doing it to get people to pay attention and listen to them?
My brilliant 20 year old daughter posted this yesterday:
The Founding Fathers wanted you to have the right to bear arms, but the guys who wrote that would pee through all eight layers of their pants if they saw what guns are now. In 1787, shooting a bullet was slightly faster than throwing one. If you wanted to be bulletproof in 1787 you put on a heavy coat. So with that in mind, I’m all about Americans having guns as long as they’re those muskets from 1787 that take forever to load. ~ Alexis
Why is it that so many of the people who are debating this issue tonight are not from the US? Let Americans handle American issues Piers!
I really think the US needs to ban all guns completely. Taking away the right to bear arms. The only people who should have guns are police. If you are caught with a weapon. I
The 2nd Amendment is flawed, it is holding us hostage & killing us. Tired of excuses. Evolve NOW. #gunsinamerica
"What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms."
- Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, 1787. ME 6:373, Papers 12:356
Time to swtich the channel, bring back larry king, at least he was not a left wing nutcase. Your panel tonight is a joke, no opposing views, just propaganda, corry booker thinks all americans agree with him? What lies. Shame on Amanpour, if iranians had the right to bare arms the ayatolahs would have been overthrown years ago, and hezbollah would be out of business. Thousands of lives saved. Go ahead and enjoy your moment, you wont get anything passed in the house. The senate can try anything they want. When liberals introduce and pass anti gay and anti abortion legislation, you will see republicans and southern and midwest democrats pass gun bans. Youre wasting your time.
Limiting the size of magazines accomplishes one important issue: This LIMITS the number of people the shooter can hit within a minute or two. This gives the group being aimed at a fighting chance to jump the shooter and stop him, to run away, to hide, to live. No one should be able to go into schools, theaters , hospitals, malls with a semi automatic. Are hospitals next ? Anyone can wander in and out of a hospital. Churchs ? Groups of any kind. This is a group problem.
That part of it can be changed.
Last night the Exec Dir of Gun Owners of America claimed that gun deaths are highest in liberal states that restrict guns the most. The fact is, the highest gun deaths per caita are in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Nevada, Arizona and Alaska. Last time I checked, none of these are Northeastern "Blue" states
Interesting how facts seem to get in the way.... Like throwing poop against the wall and seeing who all will believe it's a work of art...There will be those percentages who will believe it and will refuse to listen to the fact that they are in fact "wrong".
As far as Canada is concerned, we are headed the wrong way too: Eaton center, the block party shooting. Here's an article for those who need a reality check.
What's that matter Piers?! Can't handle someone challenging your perception with facts and logic?!
...Sorry to admit it, but the sellers and profiteers of the gun industry couldn't be making more money in these days..... In the south the gun stores' parking lots are full by 7 am since the weekend. Obviously there will NEVER be a way to stop Americans from having guns.. We can begin to have sane conversation requiring the gun to have total locks &
the ability of the owner to stop the use of that gun by anyone but himself. The gun owner is liable for the injuries & deaths his gun causes due to negligent ownership. Like cell phones can be made useless if stolen.
The major problem seems to me to be lack mental health care. A National Health Care Program that includes mental health care is what is needed, even more than gun control. (One could argue that no same person would own an assault rifle.) the best tribute for those sacrificed at Sandy Hook would be a ban on assault rifles AND comprehensive health care!
The insane man who killed those beautiful babies DID NOT purchase those firearms legally. His mother did. He was not able to "BUY" a firearm due to the laws already set in place. I am a mother of 3 little girls one of them 6 yrs old. I refuse to hand over my firearms. I NEED them to protect her if the need arises. If you were able to un-arm America and just have cops with guns, that would still not stop criminals from obtaining them. They would steal them from police cars (in some cases this happens today) and police stations or Police homes. really? you think crooks wouldn't find a way. Heck they can go to home depot and buy what they need to MAKE them. come on people use your head!
P. Morgan says there needs to be a discussion on the issue of gun control... yet, he called a gun rights activist a liar, and ruthlessly cut him off?...and this is what he means by meaningful exchange?.. Please, if you are going to promote gun control, just quit wasteing time pretending to be an exchange, it is not fair to those of us on both sides of the issue that WANT to have a meaningful conversation.
Can Americans debate American issues without British interferance please?
P.Morgan is and has always had a obvious leftist bent, and that is his right. However, to pervert true jounralism and purport to represent the mainstream america, is wrong. What statistics and polls does he use?..those that were skewed just to falsly back up his newest mantra? This type of sensationalism does nothing meaningful to arrive at an answer, in fact, it is what is going to make "middle of the road" americans such as myself dig in. You, the media, are sensationalizing a tragic happening, but there is a reason why we have the inalieanable right to keep and bear arms, and going about changing that is not only attacking a mindset, but a right that has been in place (and rightfully so) since the inception of our country. Stop trying to villianize those who legally exercise their right to guns.
There goes Pierce Morgan once again, not allowing a person with a different view to speak.. you are turning the tide,....but in the wrong way.
I am not American but like many other non-Americans, I am very interested in this issue. However Piers Morgan's handling of this discussion on CNN has been inept and quite frankly embarrassing, as he has absolutely no interest in listening to any views which conflict with his own, and has been quite rude and patronising to those guests who have been invited to appear on his show to offer another view – but there again, what more can you expect from a former editor of a UK tabloid newspaper ??!!
I have also noticed the number of foreigners on this and other programs who purport to know the American psyche. They don't. They don't have the "Spirit of '76." They don't understand our 2nd amendment. They don't understand the difference between a free citizen and a subject of a crown. They also refuse to acknowledge countries such as Switzerland which have citizen armies with a fully automatic weapon(s) in each home and a very low crime rate in spite of the presence of these powerful weapons.
I am lost as to why other nationalities are commenting on this as well... I also like your example on the citizen army. Unfortunately, P. Morgan is going to milk this for every rating he can get.
I think that it is wonderful that we are having any kind of collective conversations. I think it is horribly sad that it takes a catastrophic tragedy to get us there. That being said I do not disagree at all that we need to address the horrible destruction that is caused by gun violence in this country everyday. Unfortunately though I do not feel that needs to be our primary focus. We need to be addressing the issues that surround mental health care. First people need to be educated that getting treatment for mental illness is as important as getting treatment for cancer or heart disease. We must have awareness campaigns to educate every American about mental illness. We need laws to change surrounding the care for a mentally ill person so that family members can intervene when they are in crisis. We need mental health services to be available to each and every person instead of some services being restricted to only individuals with Medicaid, I've personally experienced this. These are just a few things that must be addressed in regards to mental health but its a good place to start!
Michelle, you are more than correct. There are a myraid number of laws already on the books, that is NOT the problem, the problem boils down to the insane actions of a few individuals; not their weapon of choice. Perhaps if this country would look at taking steps to curb the number of mentally ill or unstable individuals that walk the streets freely, that pervert their rights as a means to cause harm to many, then, and only then, perhaps we will make progress.
It's funny how certain action can have a different consequence.
In 2001 there was the shoe bomber, it was a failed attemp at blowing 1 single airplane, and now almost anywhere in the world we must take our shoes off, to prevent that from happening.
Last year, there was the underwear bomber... And now we have to pass in those X-ray machine at airport, in almost everywhere in the western world.
In the USA, there is almost 2-5 major guns massacre per year, with crazy machine guns purchased at Walmart, and there's no change????? REALLY,
I bet all those radical at the NRA, if one of there loved one got murder in a massacre like we just saw in Connecticut, they would have a different view.
Thanks god I live in CANADA
Peirs is a outright joke and has no right to host a discussion as important as this to America.
He will resorts to name calling and interrupting when he is challenged with facts?
Amen.. The thing is that he just wants to hear himself, and makef the NRA sound bad, but the NRA is protecting our rights. I do not want to not be able to own guns, and be left defenseless the way this world is going you better bear arms.
Elliot, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I started listening to this openminded, and after seeing the way Morgan has ambushed his "guests" that have a different view, not only have I lost respect for his journalism, but for him as a person as well. To be placed as a moderator of an engaging and meaningful conversation also implies that the moderator will leave his personal bias aside in order to facilitate that very meaningful conversation he is supposed to be interested in. (unless of course its simply another attempt to play on the raw emotions that exist after such a tragedy such as this one)
Piers you are right on. I currently live in Canada and I'm glade for that. My kids were born and lived in newtown for 8 yrs. I cannot believe that so many people think the answer to the problem is more guns. I think that if this is the solution it would be like letting every country defending themselves with more nuclear weapons. If Americans are steadfast to their right to bear these kind of weapons then they should not object to North Korea having nuclear warheads to protect themselves. You can't suck and blow and its not the solution. Signed crying for newtown but glad to be Canadian
I am a former Police Officer and have a question for Piers....If you were in a theater, mall or anywhere else and a shooter came in and began shooting, would you hope that either you or someone else there had a gun to defend yourselves? I know I would...
I am all for a ban on assault weapons but the horse is already out of the barn. There are tons of them out there already and easily accessible. Look at Chicago where my best friend is a Police Officer. They have the strictest gun laws around yet there are shootings everyday.
Also, I don't hear anyone saying that a person can do just about the same amount of damage with a handgun or shotgun as with an ar-15.
I can't wait until Illinois finally gets a concealed carry law so I can legally protect myself and my family from these psychos!
You posed a great question, and I also want to thank you for your efforts in serving the law enforcement community. I totally agree with the presupposition that IF I were in a movie theatre, and someone started shooting... I sincerely hope that SOMEONE has something to stop the madman.
Alcohol kills 3x more people every year than guns ... Where is the debate on that? No one dares speak up about this and yet it's a much bigger problem. I am more worried about the drunk behind the wheel of his car than some person with a gun.
Totally agree. And let's not forget the clowns texting while driving, putting on makeup, shaving. And how many times I have heard Stewart's on planes ask that all electronics be stopped on take offs and landings, and people hide them to continue to use.
Yes..agreed. And Piers is acting like a jerk tonight and not letting people speak. Would he admit to drinking and driving??? I see a bunch of hypocrisy on this whole issue. Frustrating!
yeah, the goverment just wants more control over us, and you guys know what happen in the times of Hitler?
The word shows up again and again; Hitler is said to have mesmerized the nation, captured them in a trance from which they could not break loose." This is Obama, and everyone else who is trying to change our rights, and using whatever they can to change peoples minds. What will happen when we let the goverment take control of our every move, our life, our four fathers accomplishments, our kids future....I like the government, but there are boundaries between our rights and theirs....
I would like to see gun ownership responsibility. How about if a legally owned gun is stolen or taken to commit these types of crimes, the owner of that gun is held responsible for the crimes commited with that gun? Some kid steals dads gun and kills a bunch a people, dad is also charged with man slaghter for not ensuring the security of that weapon?
Only anti gun people can speak?
Piers needs to be a journalist and facilitate the conversation. He should not have asked a question and not allowed the person he asked to answer. Mr. Morgan, if you're too heavily invested in the conversation, don't moderate it. Don't shout someone down when you've asked him a question. Very bad form.
He and Wolfe blister know 3 words ban guns now
Civilians do not need weapons of mass destruction! the second ammendment was written when we had single shot guns. we need to protect our children before its too late.
If you take away my guns how am I supposed to protect my children from crazy people like Connecticut. Wait for the police to show up? You saw how that ended. And yes way back they only had i shot rifles, everybody. Now people have modern weapons. Same gun the police are allowed to carry except ours are semi auto. The police are the ones with the full auto weapons.
Go home Piers, If you dislike our country so much, just go now.
I personally do not own a gun, but I think that talking about banning guns is short sighted and you are missing the big picture question. Can you legislate human behavior? Has the laws we have stop people from still drinking and driving?
For those not aware, as I was not, go to You Tube and search AR-15 Bump Fire. Absolutely ridiculous... 100 rounds fired in about 15 seconds. What are these weapons doing in the general public's hands/homes?
They are nice to have, and hunting hogs. However, we are very safe with them, and it is wrong for one person to ruin it for America.
My concern is that this discussion has gone directly into solution space. Is the objective to advance a political agenda or really fix a problem? If to fix a problem the start is a clearly articulated problem statement that outlines the problem and the impact of the problem. The problem statement does not indicate or point to any solution.
The second step is doing what we call in industry a root cause analysis. The result of such analysis usually brings out root causes that were not envisioned in the original discussion if done well. Root cause analysis also will have many branches from the original problem statement. The resulting determined root causes are then pareto'd for highest to lowest impact. A second pareto lists the root causes from easiest to hardest to address.
Once the above is done one can start looking at solutions to the root causes.
My big concern is the knee jerk reaction of politicians wanting to be seen as doing something and causing more harm than good. We need a reasoned data driven approach to any problem identified. Many of the "solutions" defined without going through the above process end up with unintended consequences that are can be worse than the original problem.
Piers has gone directly into solution space without any of the actual work to determine what is really causing the problem. Need a well defined problem statement with data driven analysis before deciding on solutions.
John, the only problem with your approach is the fact that it takes logic, takes reasoning, and that, at this time would not capitalize on the raw emotions a tragedy like this has caused. That is it's only flaw and because of such, it will not equate to ratings.
Thank you, Piers Morgan, for speaking my truth. I love watching you display the outrage I have felt for as long as I can remember. We need to stop the insanity and I applaud you for giving voice to this issue.
This is such a hard case to make and I don't think many people from other countries really understand what we are up against here. I respect the opinion of Americans on this issue no matter what their view is, but Pierce Morgan just doesn't seem to connect with our culture and what "we" as Americans face when talking about guns. Some of us hate guns, some of us are indifferent to them, and some of us like them. We don't really yell and scream people down and then call them arrogant when their making a point that is actually true. The gentlemen on the show tonight may be ignoring some of the current issues, but he's making a point that has to be taken on, which is a lowering crime rate in the United States already, and the reality that gun legislation has largely been hard to pass because there really aren't stats in a country with 300,000,000 guns that can back up increased gun control with decreased gun crime. The data just isn't there and that has to be addressed if your the pro gun control crowd. If its not addressed you'll eventually find yourselves right back where you started once again. I think the message has to be shaped further than a quick reaction to this shooting. A more broad case has to be made.
Jay, your points are well thought out and true. I only wish Morgan had the self control to approach the issue with this as a center point, as opposed to resorting to a sensationalism that makes good ratings. Brow beating will not accomplish anything and in fact is simply counter productive, too bad... I was looking forward to a good discussion.
Why in a civilized society, anyone required to carry gun of any sorts. All the people I know, and I have lived in 4 countries in 4 different continents, have never owned any guns and neither found it necessary to have one. Why do we have police and armies then. If the second amendment allows individual right to arm themselves, then why don't we let other more deadly weapons such as chemical weapons be freely purchased. I guess not enough profit in that!
Have you lived in Syria? There are oppressive government in the world today. And I don't believe for one second that our is immune to tyranny.
Bullets do the damgee, the gun is merely a carrier. I do not believe we need "assault type" weapons in the populace. however, I do not think that we need to control guns so much as as the people that are emotionally unsatable that have access to the weapons. I am a 33 year member oif the US Army. I carried an M16 for those 33 years. I am also a Viet Nam Veteran, I am more concerned about an infringement on my Second Amendment rights be infringed upon. The Demoractic party is bent on taking weapons away from the American people.
Piers Morgan would do America the moist good by going back to England where his "rudeness" is apparently tolerated in insulting the american people – He has a big mouth and can
John, one of the things that seems to be missed by both Americans and non-Americans is that the second ammendment is not just about self defense and hunting. Read Washington, Adams, Jefferson and you will find the original intent was to make sure the people have the means to rise up and take back an unjust government. Small caliber small number of rounds won't cut it.
Just because you disagree with someone does not mean you need to demand his emigration. Just argue your point and leave Morgan's nationality out of it, it only serves to distract.
The thing I hate most is when people compare guns to other machines like cars. They are not like cars. Guns are designed specifically to kill and while yes, it might be "fun" to shoot them, there are plenty of other things that might be fun that you should just never do. Guns are killing machines and their only purpose is to send a tiny lead bullet at twice the speed of sound to rip open another living organism. Get a new hobby, preferably one that does not involve death. Guns will not get banned in America anytime soon, I labor under no delusions, but an assault weapons ban is a perfectly reasonable place to begin.
Simon, your approach leaves holes big enough to drive a truck thru. Consider this; Last year, when the Syrian people were being beaten and shot, do you think they wished they had a means to defend themselves? Do you think its possible that 40,000 people wouldnt have needlessly died? What the guns are for is not the question...its is as much a right as the freedom of speech, the right to vote or the right to be free from unreasonable search and seizures... its not an optional right. There is a reason why the founding fathers put it in place, and there is a reason why it has withstood various assaults thru out our history...
Narrow minded view. The majority of this country has grown.up.with various gun.sports as.part of their upbringing and culture. Shooting. It isn't about flesh and killing. It's about diciplibe and skill. It's a hobby. A family activity. It's what we've grown up on.
Pearce, please mellow. Your intensity for this subject is detracting from your ultimate goal. While I believe in what you're saying, please let the respondants talk. I'm a Vietnam Veteran. Trained extensively on the M-16. While I fully agree with a ban on automatic (assault) weapons, I believe in civility in debate. You are not being civil. Please respect the opinions of your guests, whether you agree or not.
if they wont give up the guns, regulate the ammo. take it out of the corner shop and only sell it thru the police stations.
You're an idiot and buffoon piers you refer to AR as shooting that fast yeah when they're automatic. A pistol can shoot as fast as a semi automatic rifle you idiot let the man talk!
Thank you for being a STRONG MAN PIERS. Your RIGHT and so are US COMMON SENSE FOLKS. Its GREAT to have someone with a FEARLESS VOICE! Thank you friend!
Don't be afraid of facts and logic. Let your guests speek or don't have any opposition on your show.
Piers, you are an ass. You bring gun advocates on not to have a discussion, but to insult them, interupt them, and deny them the opportunity to speak. I am military Sir, active duty, as the Mayor wondered if there were any in your audience, and am disgraced by your lack of courtesy and treatment of responsible gun owners. You want a military member on your show, let me know.
I am for closing the gun buying loophole at gun shows and private firearms. I am not for restricting my ability to own a semi-automatic weapon; I have proven myself responsible enough to own one. I am for looking at all options to save lives, particularly of our children, which you seem to ignore on your show.
You are completely wrong Sir when you state it "all boils down to guns". How about talking to the point of individual responsibility and accountability of the animals that commit these atrocities. Responsible gun owners are just as saddened and sickened by what has happened recently as anyone else.
Answer truthfully. They are semi auto weapons. You have to pull the trigger each time. I really don't think you can pull a trigger 4 to 6 times a sec. You get you facts from you left wing friends, who hate guns, all guns, gun owners. You get your facts right.
The reality is you or someone has to pull the trigger. Therefore you or someone is responsible for killing. Just like the numerous cuttings or stabbings that have killed thousands across the United States each year someone or you has to wield the knife. Once we understand that the perpetrator of criminal behavior is responsible and we eliminate there threat to society is the day we will all be safe. More people are killed in car accidents each year so why aren't we talking about banning cars?? Piers Morgan is a socialist idiot from a country that by all accounts I have heard from expats is going down the tube at a horrific pace due to the influx of immigrants, the general lack of work ethic by the new British and the governments cradle of benefits. Go back to GB Piers and stay there, we don't need a foolish foreigner commenting on our world. Obviously you weren't good enough for GB and you had to infest our country. Go home pig!
President Regan was surrounded by highly trained FBI agents with guns yet they could not prevent him from being shot. So what makes you think a school teacher is going to be able to stop someone ?
Stupid piers..he didn't answer the question posed to him. What do we do? And his expert estimates. 4 rounds per second..not even. I'll take bets he leaves the studio after this one sided view and has armed bodyguards.
Thank you for doing what your doing Piers! Your one of the few voices in the media going hard on this sick love affair Americans have with guns.
im watching and i dont like that piers does not give time to answer the questions. He also has to learn the difference between a seimi-automatic and fullyautomatic.
The right to bear arms was intended to keep the people able to defend the country. Muskets will not make for equality these days.
Question Do you think our police and national guard can really protect us if the worst happens.
Question. Do you think we can prevent bad guys from getting weapons.
Question. Do you think weapons kill people?
Question. Do you think Lanza could have done as much damage with a semi auto 38 spl?
There are a lot of discussion about keeping guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them. A couple of things I don't understand is;
1. If guns are part of the problem, and they shouldn't be there, then how do you get rid of them?
2. I have yet to hear a convincing argument that clearly explains why me, as a responsible member of society, I should not be allowed to have a semiautomatic rifle?
The shooter's mother apparently kept the guns because whe was afraid society would dissolve if the economy cratered. Fear is the motive for many to arm themselves. People today are afraid for many reasons, fear of losing their jobs, their homes, fear of not having enough money to retire, fear of terrorists, fear of their neighbors. A lot of this fear could be dispelled if more of the citizens had enough money to live a decent life. One thing Obama could do is to put in place laws that make it impossible for the Wall Street crowd to again cripple the whole world, cause millions to lose their homes and jobs and their dignity. The events of 2008 still reverberate four years later and recovery is still more years away. Older workers cannot retire since their nest eggs have disipated and low interest rates make it impossible to live on the interest on any savings they do have. That means their are less jobs for younger people even those with University degrees never mind those that leave school earlier.
Rather than bail out the Wall Streeters they should have been jailed and had their assets confiscated to mitigate the damage they inflicted on the World, I would call what they did treason since it has seriously weakened all of America and fueled the fears of millions.
That reality affects society in a myriad of ways, one of which is that there are more marginal, fearful, desperate people in all areas of our lives, both adults and their children who they most likely don't have time to properly raise and who they undoubtedly affect with their fear.
The idea that guns are a symbol of liberty in America is ludicrous. Now comparatively speaking South Africa is a recent democracy in relation to the the US. Three decades ago the AK47 was a symbol of liberty in the fight against apartheid, if anyone said the AK 47 is a symbol of liberty in South Africa today they would be considered out of touch- so maybe America should start rethinking those symbols of liberty, besides other than Piers Morgan and Simone there is no eminent British invasion of the States'.
If you read only one article today on how to fight the gun lobby, read THIS one. It's brilliant.
"Ron Cohen is the CEO of Sig Sauer, the company that produced one of the guns that was used in Friday's Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre. You have probably never heard of Ron Cohen before. I know I never have. I tried to find a decent picture of him this weekend, but I came up empty. He may as well not exist.
In the wake of the shootings, Cohen's name has appeared in a grand total of one Google alert. This is by design. You aren't supposed to know anything about Ron Cohen or about Sig Sauer. Every time a tragedy happens and you, Mr. Gun Control Advocate, decide to lash out at the NRA, or at "our national obsession with guns," or at the classic straw man hunter who needs a 50-bullet clip just to chase down a squirrel, you're doing Ron Cohen, Sig Sauer, and everyone else at Big Gun a huge favor."

My question is this....once they "ban" these assault rifles, what are going to do with the millions that are already in circulation? People are now buying 2 and 3 at a time at gun stores all across America. If a criminal is determined to get ahold of one of these guns, they will not be concerned with breaking the law and buying an illegal gun. And there will always be people out there willing to sell a gun to make money.
I think the bigger issue is mental health care in this country. And with all do respect to Mr. Lanza's mother, why in the world would you have these weapons in your home and available to someone with previously shown mental health issues!!!
Because she, like many parents, believe that spoiling your kids means that you love your kids. This is misguided and wrong. I would bet she bought the guns for her sons that wanted them... Not for herself. Yet she knew he had problems. It's all about the family, America. Good homes, good parents, family time. THIS is what our country needs. Every child deserves a good foundation.
the AR-15 can fire as many rounds in a second or a minute as fast you can pull the trigger, there is no set answer on how many rounds because it's going to vary per person. I can shoot my semi-automatic .22 long rifle the same speed as I can shoot the M-16 on single fire. You also have the incorrect terminology for these weapons. These are not Assault Weapons, an assault weapon is a weapon that can fire both semi-automatic and fully automatic by the moving of a selector switch on the weapon. Those have been banned in the USA since 1934. Why they let you hold a "debate" when you will not let the side give an answer that you don't want to hear is beyond me. That may work for England, but we sent your kind back across the pond in the 1700's and again in 1814, guess we will have to do it again in 2013.
your anger and your instability in this matter of guns prevents you from forming a solution. We need a dialog not yelling at those who we disagree with. Last all issue are not single source- you are focused on you agenda not THE agenda we need to have. So please stop in honor of those we lost Anger is not what America needs now by any one WE are too divided as it is
There is no a semi auto AR 15 fires 5 bullets a second.
Peirs is a complete interrupting lier.
Who is his experts? Does he know the difference between semi auto rifle and a Full auto rifle.
CNN pull him off the air or make his prove his facts> His guests can back up their facts if he will let them speak.
I've never even touched a gun and would not allow any type of one in my house, ever. But I think the original intent of the 2nd amendment was to insure that the government wasn't the only possessor of weapons. That still seems legitimate. Our history shows it's not been a worry so far, but the future is unknown. There could come a time when we'd be sorry that only the military had assault weapons. I would be for truly strict enforcement of existing gun laws, maybe beefed up some.
Thank you Rita, Our right to bear arms came from a fear of federal government and was a way to challenge that government if need be.
Keep credibility. A semi automatic is a gas powered gun that ejects and loads by gas powered mechanical pressure at high speeds but only fires as gas as one can pull the trigger. 3 shots per second in any semi automatic is easy. So piers we are with u but be fair
As well, because your brother is a member of the British military, does not make you qualified to pass judgement.
By allowing automatic weapons in our ever growing and stressed society here in America, we are virtually creating teorrists of eachother. I can't imagine going out to a block party at having my neighbors each wearning a weapon. Please, stop this outrageous move to arm America against eachother.
If you're going to invite guests on your show to question and ask for their known facts and/or opinions, then please give them a chance to speak. We're all very well aware of your opinions and frankly I grow tired of you cornering your guests without giving them the chance to properly express themselves and attempt to address your questions (whether you agree with their response or not).
As the stress of oppressive and tyrannical government increases, however, and as its destructive by-products corrode the social edifice—abusive government actions mount, profligate and destructive policies bring economic ruin on the country, corruption becomes endemic, imperial war abroad, class warfare and civil upheaval at home plague the nation, cities decay—structural cracks will appear and become visible even to the most stupefied American. More and more people will become aware of the extensive damage that oppressive, albeit democratically elected government has inflicted on American society. At that point, people will be roused from their stupor to ask, “What happened” but by then, it will be too late.
Agree with William – Piers, chill out! Your agenda is obvious and you are impolite to your guests. I was looking forward to reasoned discussion. That's not happening.
proud of you Piers right on and continue the good job you are doing with the nra washbrain machin gun
Well you are in the minority here.
Even anti gun people are unset with Peirs. He is extremely rude and has no business hosting a talk show so important to our country. What a one side debate. Is peirs views the ones pushed by CNN
I love the NRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I usually enjoy watching your show, however I am quite dissapointed that Piers keeps saying that its an impossible debate. The reality is that Piers is angry and does not let anybody answer questions. Answers that I as a viewer want to hear. I dont care for the interruptions piers does. He lets anybody who shares his views talk but not the other. Piers enough already. I feel like you have lost certain integrity to your show.
What do you want to hear, Oscarcosta65? Is it that the NRA would like to continue as normal...as if nothing happened last Friday, going "Mental" with their "NR15 automatics"!
I agree. He is embarrassing himself.
Go back to England, Moron
"I just made a comment to Coronation Street! Maybe you can answer it, Pierse? 'When a writer gets more stupid than their character, where the plot going?"
ON the same day as the rampage in Sandy Hook, a deranged man in China went into a school and stabbed 20 children and one adult. Every gun proponent will say see there are no gun rights in China and if someone wants to murder they will, BUT none of the children in China are dead.
Piers, just so you know the broadcast is actually starting to look like a joke. It's clear that you're badgering your guests, you're NOT interested in doing anything except scream your points (vs. a real debate), and the cameras are clearly targeting those people sympathetic to your "cause". Your show is turning into a joke...what happens next? Redfaced with rage, you yelling at your guests? The only thing you're a professional at is bullying.
That was last night with a guy names Pratt
Tom Ridge went through President Obama's points on mental health & gun checks etc; & yet conveniently forgot to say anything about the killer automatic weapons, it's like he saying he wants these weapons to be still sold as they are now & as they were a week ago, before 27 innocent people mostly children were slain so cruelly. Piers, ask him again does he agree that AR15 weapons should be banned? These AR15 can be made up as the owner wants, it can be made to shoot faster & more powerful.
That idiot who wrote the book, More Guns, Less Crime" shouldn't even be there in that audience because he's only repeating what he said to you the other night & his book is so badly researched that I wouldn't be surprised if the NRA had sponsored him to write & publish it!
The Mayor that is there, said he felt like that father felt on a regular basis, well I don't think so, Mayor, because that man has lost his child to the gunman & that's the difference, the horror has come to his house where he'll never see that child again, it's personal & it's horrible & when Christmas comes he'll feel the pain even more horrendously because it is his child who will not ever come back again, when he should by right have lived for many more Christmases to come & be with his "Father". That's the difference with your pain, Mayor, & the father's pain.
Piers, I'm also as angry about this as you are, because even with the loss of the latest lives, mostly children, they seem (the NRA) not to care one iota still about future massacres happening. A downright disgrace is that & it is an insult to the memory of those latest victim's & indeed of all past victims of this crazy American gun culture. I repeat, "Shameful"!
"That idiot who wrote the book, More Guns, Less Crime" shouldn't even be there in that audience because he's only repeating what he said to you the other night & his book is so badly researched that I wouldn't be surprised if the NRA had sponsored him to write & publish it!"
Really? Why don't you dispute the Yale professor's findings? Saying he does not even have the right to sit in the audience?
He does not even deserve to answer Peirs BAITED questions without being called names and interrupted.
With bold statements like you just made you better publicly dispute The facts a Yale professor published.
We will be waiting for your reply.
We had "gun control" regarding semi-auto and large capacity magazines...from 1994-2004...Columbine was in 1999. The earlier Bath Massacre used explosives...So after all the other crazy lunatics have killed unarmed citizens in unprotected places...you say you want more "gun control". How do you stop an immediate armed and dangerous threat? Raise my damn taxes some more so we can pay for public school perimeter security and armed protectors (police, military, someone that is adequately trained, not teachers). And for those cities who have "tougher gun laws"...tell me why Chicago is one of the worst regarding gun violence? smh
What happend in Texas when they allowed anyone (except lunatics) to conceal carry?? Methinks the crime rate went down.
It is easier for a twenty-year-old to get his hands on an assault weapon than to buy a beer in this country. I am with Piers. It makes no sense.
Honestly my fear.....deep inside is that all these atrocities are only going to get worse. Gun control, mental health issues, all of these things are real issues. In the end we must do our best as people to love each other and try and be good to one another. We are all flesh and blood and everyone on this planet has a story. I realize I'm carrying on with no real agenda other then trying to step back and realize that we must come together for the common good to try and find some way to help change the path America...or even the world is on! What happened to some of these people to be so out of touch with reality that they would kill mass amounts of people. Humans are hurting inside and each other. Stop the fighting with one another because I feel deep down the government has an agenda and Anericans are playing right into their hands. They want us divided! I'm scarred of how much power the govt. has and will continue to take more of our rights one step at a time. WE ARE ALL ONE NATION UNDER GOD.....don't forget it America.
I'm not on either side but my question is towards the guy on show that says AR15 is for protection. How many people have used this weapon in protection setting. There must be data. It's a toy for gun owners and nothing more. We definitely need a middle ground.
Keep in mind that the "assault rifle" that a civilian can buy is no different in terms or rate of fire, is no different than 9mm pistol. It just looks.cool. magazine capacity is.a.different story .if.you want to.legislate, that would bbe.the place.
Please also talk about wealth and race. Black kids killed in Chicago several times. Kids in pakistan, afganistan, yemen etc by US drones? Those don't derseve justice and answers? Collateral damage is a BS excuse. And all black kids killed in inner city area? kids shot in drive by's?
First time viewer. Last time viewer! You are closed minded and rude!
what can i do to help stop these sensless killings and how do i make a differents
Put Piers out in the wild with the wolves and a single shot. See how he fairs. Notice the non equal "town hall" that he has possed for equal discussion. Not to mention how biligerient he is to the few moments they get to answer question. Sad show of one mans biased agenda. Let the states decide to adopt these bans and stick X-Ray machines under each state border to screen for firearms. Firarm laws for high populous regions should not be the same as those in Alaska.
Teachers with guns in school? Obviously those making the determination don't recognize that teaching can be one of the most stressed jobs in America. Depending on the location and the kids, it can be hell. Teachers should not carry guns to school unless they want to be the target.
My posts aren't being shown because they are educated comments. Piers is a nub. He won't let anyone finish their comments. It goes to show that people are uninformed of our history and current firearm knwoledge when they say that no one should have semi auto weapons. Those are precisely the weapons we need for self defense. We DO need semi auto rifles to defend ourselves against any government that attempts to enslave us. Just knowing that our nations citizens are armed deters our government from attempting to remove our freedoms. The second amendment protects all other amendments. Those who are anti guns have this stereotypical belief of firearms owners that we are uneducated backwoods idiots which is farthest from the truth. We are returning veterans, retired police officers, professors, mechanics, teachers, etc... Get your heads out of your rectums and start thinking logically, do some research and don't believe everything the leftist politicians and talk show hosts are spewing. You are doing the same to gun owners as was done towards women when they were fighting for the right to vote and blacks who were fighting for their lives and freedom, coming up with excuses as to why they should not have those rights.
I see everyone talking about piers morgan behavior. Do you people realize how many people are dead. its time someone in America is not being politically correct about an important issues. This is not the wild wild west people more guns is not the answer. Guns are only used to kill they do not serve any other puppose and should be banned all together. Wake up people,
Piers is as rude as they come!
If you are going to have both sides then let both sides talk!!!
No wonder I hardly ever watch him!!!!
America will continue to ask the same question which is “what could have been done” until the question is properly addressed. You will always have mentally ill people who, even if they are treated, will continue to carry out unpredictable acts. The problem is when this unpredictable person gains access to a fire arm, and much worst, an assault weapon. Many of these weapons used in the horrible events that have plagued our country in recent weeks have been locked, stolen and even easily purchased, then used by unpredictable people. The school in Newtown that was attacked was properly secured. What else is needed, making our schools look like prisons? What can be done is to take the gun element out first, then people who lash out unpredictably will have a much harder time acquiring a fire arm. Yes, they might lash out, maybe with a machete or other object, but at least they will be unable to instantly spay a whole theater, classroom, mall, park or where ever, with hundreds of bullets. I understand, guns don’t kill people, people with guns kill people
We need civil discourse. Our country may be polarized but we care for the lives of our children. Gun owners and pacifist can come together. But name calling those that don't agree with us does not advance anything.
This shooting is a direct result of the liberalism pushed in this country.
The liberals pushed to remove GOD from OUR schools, currency an architecture inscribed by our Founding Fathers in the buildings that was intended to appreciate and bequeathe to the next generation. The liberals wanted to push gay marraige and legalize drugs removing true values from the child's life. The liberal anti-gun/anti-hunting movie stars glorify the WRONG use of a firearm but don't mind cashing the check $$$ for the sale of their violent movies.
Watch the 1995 youtube video about U.S. Attorney General. "eric holder wants to BRAINWASH kids against firearms."
He said "we must do this 7 days a week in OUR schools and in OUR churches."
Sorry, but that is NOT what OUR Schools and Chirches are intended to teach/brainwash.
Notice, eric holder, pelosi, clinton or obama ever talk about raising a BETTER generation.
Before the liberals started pushing their agenda the schools re-enforced right & wrong taught by the parents.
The Churches re-enforced Right and Wrong taught by the parents.
The Parents, Schools and Churches were ALL on the same page making sure the child would know Right form Wrong.
But the liberals didn't want GOD in OUR SCHOOLS anymore and replaced it with gay-marraige and legalizing drugs and mind altering drugs as a solution and look what you have now.
Excellent. Post. Well said
the same people that want a ban on guns whan't the right to choose.life or death of their child.really.they take prayer out of school, they don't whant god anywhere.
AMEN Brother you got that right I bet all those gun controllers are sure glad their parents weren't Pro Abortion !!!
Piers is not letting anyone answer his question and is leading those who do. I agree that these discussions need to take place but he is failing at it. An AR-15 can fire as many rounds a second as any other semi-automatic and he knows that. If you sweep the hammer on a revolver it will shoot as fast as an AR-15. He needs to stop pushing his agenda.
I tried to watch this program but Mr. Morgan doesn't seem to know how to report the news, he seems to want to make the news.
He is holding a debate; not telling the "News", there is a difference. Debate is supposed to get neck-vein-bulging, otherwise it is just like cosy chatter at "Home" or in the "Pub"!
Mr. Morgan should learn how to run a debate. You actuak\lly have to let both sides speak and not scream over the top of them. A typical liberal approoach, I know what is better for you just listen to me scream it again and again.Ultimately, he should return overseas and enjoy their gun laws. He will never understand our country. If crazy people can't get ASSAULT rifles they will go on you tube and build pipe bombs.
Troy I completely agree. If it isn't a gun it will be something else. Bombs, Anthrax, etc. Things that you can find how to make on the internet.
Your right, he will never understand our country and he should go back home.
Angry in IDAHO
Piers first I would like to say you are a very rude person and you make all Englishman look bad. Second, you need to get your facts straight. AR-15 is not a military gun, it is patterned after the M-16 rifle. I would also like to point out that if someone wants to hurt someone else there will always be a way to do it. Case in point the 22 children that were SLASHED in China, that's with a knife. Oh you didn't get that one, it happened around the same time Sandy Hook did. I don't think that a gun ban is the answer, I think education is the answer.
Also if you don't like our gun laws then go back to where you came from. You do nothing more then agitate people because you don't let people finish what they are saying. Case in point on the show, Mrs. Annam? (the police officer) you cut her off before she was finished because you didn't like what she was saying. If she wasn't there with her gun he very well could have done more damage then what he did.
Let's remove God, now guns, oh let's remove their rights too...Why not we did it with everything else..
Some people have no idea what the democratics are trying to do...
I do. Right there with you. Scarrrrrrry
I just do not understand how the democratics are so one sided, and yet try to blame everything on guns...Like the gun went off itslef or something...How about better background checks? I mean I can find a middle, but we know what they really want they want it all!
You know one day we are going to go into war either with ourselves or with some one else...America is armed almost every house has a gun of some sort, but when you take that away, God, and our right to speak...What next, we lose our right to be humans. Sometimes the best defense is to defend yourself, you do not know what can happen, and the future for america does not look to well.
Article on this subject by Dr. Thomas Sowell who is an economist who grew up in the projects in NY.
Great suggestion! Thanks!
Piers, please let everyone have a chance to speak. Such an important topic, we need to hear differing views. Clearly, guns are a problem in our country. However, mental illness devastates families all over this country as well. We cannot ignore the failures of our mental health system when trying to solve this problem.
It's about time that gun owners remember the children. And in the name of the children start realizing that sticking to your opinion just to have the last word is not necessary. Have the courage to listen to others and come up with solutions to this problem so that you can honor the memory of these children.
I agree with you janice....!!
I like you Pierce, I respect what you are trying to do. But you are becoming irrational. You are shutting down the other side without letting them express their thoughts and you lose credibility. Get control... Good luck...
Piers, and most intelligent people know the thoughts of the people who are Pro guns ; that why he & those who are against these killer automatic guns are trying to change the mind-sets of those who still think...that (these war weapons) are somehow just "Big Boy's, "Toys"!
God Bless Piers Morgan.God Bless America! He has the guts our SUITS don't have. Get rid of assault weapons. Those innocent children and teachers didn't have to DIE, they would be here today if not for an assault weapon. Granted people kill people, but NO GUNS NO DEATHS. WHY CAN"T YOU SEE THAT! THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO DIE! There's no place in our society for assault weapons. RIP Precious Children of GOD.
This is definitely not a "town hall" setting. This is a very lopsided audience and is not giving us the opportunity for discussion that he claimed. This is just a stage for him to yell at people that everyone else is wrong but him. Time to change the channel.
I think Piers is being a little overbearing when interracting with his guests. He asks them a question but doesn't give them a chance to explain themselves. We really shouldn't be caught up with the size or caliber of a gun. All guns can kill – even a .22 caliber. Unfortunately, there is evil in the world and there are people that will kill no matter what and with what ever means they can get their hands on. Even if there are more strict laws and bans on guns, people will still find a way to obtain them.
Thanks, Piers, keep the good work! I am glad you are bringing this important issue to the forefront since politicians have been afraid to do it in the past.
I agree whole heartedly with Piers. We aren't asking for a complete ban on guns ( God forbid!) Just automatic rifles. There is absolutely no resaon for anyone to have accessibility to these types of weapons and the ammo needed for them.
Karen, automatic rifles are aready banned unless you have an FFL. Semi-automatic rifles are not, which comprises the majority of the rifles for hunting and sport. The rifles in question that Piers wants banned function the same as any other semi-auto rifle. They just look different.
How many laws can you name that can prevent someone from possessing anything simply because they can't justify a need? If we start doing that you might not like the results when you don't get to decide what is needed. Laws are to protect liberty not ban things some people don't believe should be allowed. This country has a history of failed bans. We banned alcohol with prohibition and banned drugs. Look how we'll that worked out. We even banned these guns before and it did nothing to stop murders. All bans do is make criminals rich. Just the threat of a ban already has gun sales storing so your efforts have already had the opposite effect that you want. Try a realistic dialog about regulation, training and licensing and you might actually get some cooperation and some positive results. Keep talking bans and you might as well spit into the wind and complain about getting wet.
Love your show Piers! But not when you are badgering your guests. You are a guest in this country, act like one.
In 2000 my husband and I were attending a HOA meeting in our adult community in Arizona when a 60 year old came in with numerous guns, including an assault rifle and started shooting in a crowd of over 60 adults. The man was tackled by men in the crowd who were not armed. The outcome was 2 people killed and 3 wounded, including my husband who was shot with the assault rifle.
Piers comment from his doctor friend in LA was correct these assault rifles destroy bones and tissue. That what happened to my husbands foot. The bullet shattered bones and tissue. As a result he almost lost his entire foot, was out of work for 1 year (self employed) and 12 years later dealing with residual physical damage as a result of loss of most of his foot.
As a nurse in that crowd I could help based on my profession but if I had a gun, I could not have shot. Your other police officer was correct in saying we are all trained differently and as a nurse I am not trained to kill.
Now some would say if I had a gun I would have shot and they would be wrong I would have hid my head an be prepared to be shot.
Assault rifles should be banned!!! An we have waited 12 years and nothing has happened to correct the situation.
We moved and do not attend HOA meetings in our new community and my husband is not physically as good as he should be at 77 thanks to that shooting.
Piers , What you are proposing with your ban on assault rifles is terrifyingly reminiscent of a time in the not to distant past that almost caused the world to speak Deutsche, Semi automatic weapons such as the AR15 and that is all that gun is ,another semi automatic weapon, are an extremely useful tool if in the hands of a competent hunter, as an example, here n Texas as in much of the South we have a tremendous problem with wild hogs for example and if you fire on a wild hog and don't drop him with the first shot then you place yourself in extreme personal danger when that animal turns on you and decides to rip you to shreds, You can have my guns when you pry them from my COLD DEAD HANDS!!!!
I don't think they should arm teachers, but if a person has a concealed carry permit, not an easy thing to get, why should they not have the right to protect themselves. A lot of these troubled people target schools first, because they know that people are unarmed, and second, schools are a place of torment for many of these people. If a person thought that someone might fight back, most of these cowards would just run. We need to stand against these type of people. If you take the guns away from the good guys only the evil ones will have them.
John, agree with you. I would support teachers carrying in school with special training and concealed carry. In our state those who have concealed carry permits can carry everwhere except the courthouse and federal buildings. By state law the right to carry in classrooms by teachers is left up to the district. Recently we have had a couple of sherifs and lawmakers, both parties call for teachers to carry in the classroom.
Piers Morgan needs to stop being so one sided and give the other side give a answer to his question. He keeps interrupting and talks over anyone that does not agree with him. He is a very non professional. Anderson Cooper gives the other side of a story a time to speak. This is just another piers Morgan soap box, one sided conversation on only what he wants heard. He keeps stating I love America and Americans. HOG Wash!!! He needs to stop using such a tragedy for his own agenda. Right now prayers are what need to be heard, not Piers opinion .
CNN should be moved to Moscow or Tehran not Atlanta!
God bless Piers Morgan...but PLEASE!!!!.........NAME THE SENATORS WHO HAVE RECEIVED "A" RATINGS FROM THE NRA BUT REFUSE TO TAKE A STAND AGAINST GUN CONTROL! we have all heard the names of the 20 children over and over...now we need someone to tell the country who these senators are. i have tried in vain to find them but cannot access the list on the NRA site.
What an A hole that Mile guy is.
If you disagree with him your an "idiot" and your life is "worthless".
"Mile – armed and dangerous" proof that this is a mental health issue as well as gun control.
With respect.....I can no longer listen to Piers.Morgan. I tuned into to CNN in order to listen to discussion about the gun issues and to listen to ideas for solutions. However, all I hear is Mr. Morgan yelling over anyone who who does not say exactly what Mr. Morgan wants to hear or who is not in complete agreement.
Mr. Morgan sounds just like the wackos he is condemning.
We need CIVIL DISCOURSE not more yelling and acting like idiots.
I have turned to CNN for years for information and news-fair and equitable reporting and discussions. I have been disgusted at his behavior. This week/this subject needed the best CNN had --and will continue to be that way as we work through this catastrophe and try to prevent future weeks like this one. But not with Piers Morgan for myself and everyone I have spoken to.
THANK YOU, Piers, for being such a strong voice against the disgusting gun violence that has overtaken us here. PLEASE do not stop talking about this critical issue. We must put an end to this madness, for my fellow suffering citizens of Sandy Hook and Newtown, and for every single American, young and old.
wow, yet another CNN staffer fluffing up Piers' show. pathetic. what a kool-aid drinking sheeple.
Thank you piers, you are right about it all. Thank you for fighting for us. We need you to continue. What can I do to help. God bless you
Dear Mr. Isadouch Morgan
Tried watching your poor excuse of a show billed as a "town hall discussion" and quickly discovered that ot was anything but that. You yelling over your guests, especially ones with an opposing view is, is not a discussion. I noticed you quickly cut off the woman police officer after she deviated from your position.....how pathetic of you. Your apparent inability to understand the difference between a military rifle and a civilian model leaves me questioning your intellectual abilities, or is that just part of your campaign of deceit? Inquiring minds want to know.
thats cause hes an idiot
I commend Piers Morgan for his passion taking on this devisive subject with such passion. Our country has become so divided politically on every issue. Surely the tragedy in Newtown would allow us to come to some common ground. I can only imagine the criticism you receive for voicing your strong convictions, Arguing with these close minded right wing idiots is like explaining physics to a cat. Lets hope our president and our legislators get some cojoines to take on the NRA and it's huge financial backing. This is no longer the "Old west" where people need to walk around with a sidearm because law enforcement cannot "keep the peace" . The logic of arming teachers and principals is ludicrous. Keep up the fight.
You sound like you are from a Blue State....It figures enjoy the next 4 years!!!!
We know assault weapons like the one used in Newtown have resulted in the killing of thousands in our country; how many lives have assault weapons saved in the last 10 years in America? How many people actually needed an assault weapon to defend them-self and/or their family?
Our hearts and prayers go out to Newtown. We will always be there with you!
If the American colonist did have guns as good as the British army Priers would probably be gov. Of America.
The senseless massacre that occurred in CT is tragic beyond any words could describe, and my prayers are with the families. The disbelief and horror of the recent phenomenon of these shootings all throughout the states is unspeakable, however, the knee jerk reaction to them will be one that I will never understand. My husband and I are avid hunters and have many guns in the home from pistols to rifles and are rightfully secured in a combination safe, as responsible parents do who have children. For the record, we do not own any semi-automatic weapons. Attacking guns is not the issue to us. People all have a moral compass and whether or not they choose to make right decisions is nothing that can be prevented, although we all wish we could. How many people kill others deciding to drive drunk or while talking on their cell phone? I have yet to see cars being removed or Liquor and cell phones being banned. This may sound like a petty thought, but seems as crucial as what you are discussing tonight. All senseless violence always begs the question why. The answers to which we may never know, which will forever weigh heavy on my heart as well as the hearts of the country.
If a criminal wants a gun, they will get a gun. Mental illness, you have to know that mental illness ( just like cancer ) exists in order to treat it.
How come all of the Anti-gun proponents like Piers Morgan don't discuss the rest of the story? Where is the discussion about Nick Meli and the Clackamas Mall? http://www.oregonlive.com/clackamascounty/index.ssf/2012/12/security_guard_said_he_had_rob.html Everyone screaming to get rid of guns, just look around the country at all of the cities that have gun bans, New York, Chicago, LA, Detroit, Philly, D.C. these are cities that not only have gun bans, but also some of the highest murder rates in the country... Good luck you weak sheep...
Has anyone even thought of how they would take away all the magazines. There are something like 23 million guns, half, or more are semi autos. Figure two magazines per gun. That's a lot of magazines. Are they going to make everyone in the country turn them in or become felons. Now figure all the money people will lose who own them. Does the president want to make millions of Americans criminals? I wonder what else we can think of getting rid of , for our own good? Glad the government is looking out for whats best for us.
John, I am betting they will ban future sales of these guns and large clips. The one already owned will be grandfatherered. This was done the first time around in 1994. That is why the sales of these guns are spiking right now.
Thank you for your passion on doing something about our gun laws. They must be changed, but PLEASE stop interrupting the people on your show, especially the "good" guys. We need to hear everything they have to say, even those crazy people who spout the NRA's irrational messages. Please let them finish their thoughts and "hang" themselves.
I wish Piers would understand the difference between a military AR and a civilian AR. All military AR's are full auto. Civilian AR's are semi auto. If you are going to talk about a certain firearm get it right.
I keep hearing people repeatedly saying that we should arm ourselves, arm teachers at schools etc.to be able to defend ourselves. I want to know who is to stop them from becoming the very meniac they are trying to stop.
Piers Morgan is the rudest most unfrofessional host of any TV show in America. To call a guest names just because you do not agree with their opinion is unacceptable behavior and an extremely poor example for anyone watching. How can he justify a crusade to end violence in this country when his own childish rude behavior would incite a violent reaction by any person if not on a TV set. I 'm shocked that someone hasn't knocked him on your smart A by now. When he can't win an argument by debating actual facts he resorts to over shouting his guest and telling outright lies. He even did it to his own CNN audience member. He asked " How many bullets can a semi auto weapon fire a second? " The fact is "As many times a second as you can pull the trigger". Piers claims 100 bullets in 60 second or 4 to 5 per second as a fact. Someone should take him to a gun range and have him demonstrate how many times he can pull the trigger in a second. I bet 1 time and he would probably miss the target completely. I bet he has never fired a gun or even handled the guns he wants to ban that he wants people to think he is so knowledgeable about.
you are so right. i can just see it now. Piers trembling as he holds the gun, trying to aim at the target five feet away. pulling the trigger and sending a round into the ceiling. dropping the gun on the ground and screaming like a teenage Bieber fan while running away...lol
Tried watching your poor excuse of a show billed as a "town hall discussion" and quickly discovered that it was anything but that. You yelling over your guests, especially ones with an opposing view is, is not a discussion. Its a one-sided bully pulpit that just makes you look pathetic. I noticed you quickly cut off the woman police officer after she deviated from your position.....how pathetic of you. Whats wrong Piers? afraid of the truth? Your apparent inability to understand the difference between a military rifle and a civilian model leaves me questioning your intellectual abilities, or is that just part of your campaign of deceit? Inquiring minds want to know.
Piers, please expose the money-trail in the American gun issue. This is not about the 2nd Amendment. This is not about peoples' right to defend themselves. The REAL resistance to taking military-type weapons off the market is about the billions of dollars being made through the sale of these guns.
I totally agree with piers..it makes me also as furious and as angry as piers is...I so much admire your passion..but please keep it on..until some action has taken and American gun culture's regulation is changed...Piers please Don't let this issue be forgotten...for the sake of those BEAUTIFUL INNOCENT CHILDREN...AND BRAVE STAFF/TEACHERS who lost their lives.
hey look kids! its yet another CNN staffer posing as a blog poster! how pathetic. yet another kool-aid drinking sheeple unaware of the facts.
While we are at it why not do something even more courageous that will save even more lives. More people are killed in America by automobile accidents than by guns every year. We've tried speed limits and seat belts and car seats for children yet people continue to die every year because we are in such a hurry to get somewhere. The Amish have shown us a better way. They can get around just fine with a horse and buggy and no one has to die because of our greedy impatience. We don't need automobiles. We can always take the bus for longer trips. Let 's get Piers to jump on the bandwagon. The English have some great carriages and I'm sure Piers already owns one so he is probably an expert on that too. Anyone who doesn't agree must be incredibly stupid.
I think the great failing here was the inability of our health care system to find the young man who committed this great crime before he killed. There are over 4 million assault weapons in the US. If you could somehow confiscate every one of these you would reduce the gun homicide rate by 3 to 5%. Only the government would see that as a logical approach.
Australia banned assault rifles and semi auto hand guns in 1994. Gun fatalities are down by 50% since 2000. Hmmm?
Great job Pierce! The NRA has hijacked the safety of all citizens to meet it own agenda. It is just common sense that military weapons should be band and that background checks are performed for all who purchase fire arms!!
band? lol...maybe you should have finished 8th grade.
Canadian school shootings since 1996 ( 2 ) resulting in 2 deaths.American school shootings numerous resulting in just over 170 deaths. We have gun control in Canada. I can not walk into my Walmart and purchase a M4 carbine which the American site lists under hunting. Come on who shoots a deer with an M4. Israel one of the most dangerous places in the world reported 58 deaths (2011) USA 10728(2011) Israel has gun control. Here it is; min age to own a firearm is 27 unless serving in military then it is 21.Must pass background checks including health, mental, and criminal history. Must re-apply and re-qualify every 3 years.Firearm owners are permitted to possess limited amounts of ammunition.Usually50 rounds per year..
As far as arming our teachers that is absolutely crazy and definately opens up a can of worms. For one I would definately not want my child attending schools with armed teachers walking around, what are we in a warzone. 2. I would not not want to be in the teacher's shoes of having the responsibility of carrying a weapon, and god forbid them ever have to fire it. Even trained proffesionals at times have difficulty shooting their target. Misfires.... what if. Assault rifles are designed for military personel who defend the people of our world lets leave that to them instead of Joe Blow who walks into a Walmart because they have a fassination.
The Second Amendment calls for a "Well-Regulated Militia" not a bunch of lone gun men running around with no discipline whatsoever, armed with whatever the hell they want , and showing up whenever they damn well feel like it! If you want to be part of the "well regulated" Militia and keep the right to bear arms, you better start acting like it!
My point is the NRA and gun advocates have been too successful, to the point now that a large number of nicky new guy gun owners have enter the picture and a large number of them are not well behaved, well trained, members of our Militia. Talk to Pvt, 1st Class James Holmes about his obnoxious behavior, and contemplate for a moment the actions of Corporal Adam Lanza. Are these the kind of guys we want in our Militia??
And don't forget for one moment that the maintenance of a "well regulated" Militia is the "reason to be" for gun ownership that shall not be infringed upon. Licensing is not an infringement, its a reasonable standard for membership in the Militia.
Well said, James.
when obama talks about "we have more work to do"
He is NOT talking about jobs.
He is talking about TRANSFORMING America.
Making US like england.
Putting in supreme court justices/judges of "EMPATHY"
To break down YOUR God-given Birth Rights that the Bill of Right proteck.
Look up the McDonald vs Chicago and Hellar vs D.C. case on the 2A.
5 / 4 vote.
Only ONE us supreme court justices away from losing the Bill of Rights that protect YOU from being a citizen instead of subject.
One supreme court justice from making US like england.
Is that what you want.
Rememebr the Bill of Rights are like a Fire Extingusher.
Better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have it.
You have no idea how close they are to acheiving their solcialistic agenda,
This is a BIG mistake America.
piers morgan if you don't like America.
Go back to england and take pelosi, corzine, bloomberg, obama, biden and holder with you.
BTW, what happened in OPERATION FAST & FURIOUS????
obama, hillary and holder were saying 90 % of the guns were coming from America until U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and people revealed the truth.
They were trying to gather public support in America like they are doing now to push not a biden/clinton ban but an obama/biden ban.
Note: They NEVER place the blame on illegals or criminals.
Their ONLY solution is to raise taxes and place more restrictions on law-abiding citizens.
Let's talk about OPERATION FAST & FURIOUS???
Let's talk about the FORT HOOD SHOOTER who was NOT held accountable???
WE DID NOT FORGET
Ironically it takes a Brit, who refuses to be intimidated by the narrow minded , to lead gun safety in America.
i can just see it now. Piers trembling as he holds the gun, trying to aim at the target five feet away. pulling the trigger and sending a round into the ceiling. dropping the gun on the ground and screaming like a teenage Bieber fan while running away...lol
and so how well did the last time they banned these guns ( I will NOT call them an assault weapon as they are not).. I bet it worked as well as the total ban that they have in Chicago, or DC.. or about as well as banning drunk drivers which by the way kill a lot more children and others every year then any of these guns.
And Piers, why is the department of misinformation lying to America??? Friday morning watching Newtown unfold on the news, the State Police Chief told all the news stations present, that 2 handguns had been found WITH the shooter, and 2 others found in the vehicle, 1 of those being the bushmaster 223.. IT WAS NOT I repeat NOT used in the shooting of those poor children. There was even video of them removing this rifle from the vehicle.. Strange, in one interview he even said the media( the department of misinformation) would put their own spin on it.. and lo and behold, the next thing we are being told (I mean lied to) is that the rifle had been used by the shooter...
you know, the media during 2 gulf wars, told the enemy where and what our troops were doing, causing many casualties, our troops could have used that misinformation then, but instead, they lie to Amerians...
A ban in Australia worked very well! It reduced gun homicides by 50% since 2000. They restricted semi auto and 'assault' rifles. BTW, w/ fairly cheap modifications they can be converted to assault rifles. nit picking detail you bring up anyway.
Criminals by definition don't obey our laws. However OUR LAWS, define us as a
people, they define who we are and what we are, they tell the world what our
standards are, and define our aspirations as a society.
I refuse to be defined by a madman with a gun, I refuse to be defined by
those who put an AK-15 in Adam Lanza's hands, I refuse to allow the NRA and
other gun nuts to tell me what I can and cannot do WITHOUT A GUN!
I have been sending this idea to every politician that I think will listen to
it. Guns are getting a "free ride" in our society while they cause untold harm,
division, and costs. Part of the problem is the irresponsible way we as a
society deal with them. In America WE are the government. And WE have failed to
implement reasonable and sensible policies related to guns. WE would never think
of eliminating driver's licensing and automobile registration in America and
declare that a statemnt of our "Freedom", that would be irresponsible. But we
think nothing of allowing dangerous weapons to go unregistered and their users
unlicensed. No one is really qualifing those who pruchase guns and ammo, no one
looks to see if they are mentally competent or a psycho case.
A militia is assumed to be "able bodied", assumed to be sensible and
intelligent, assumed to have good intentions, assumed to be law abiding, assumed
to be able to take direction and follow orders. We never check to see if our
modern "mIlitia" fits these requirements, yet we put high power weapons in their
hands and turn them loose on society!
Any help I can get in sending this basic idea to Government officials would
be greatly appreciated.
You obviously mean well and I applaud your active efforts to help but you obviously do not own and have never purchased a gun or you would know that most of what you believe to be true in regard to gun regelation is totally incorrect. I suggest you go to a gun store and have them show you what is required before writing to politicians. Legal gun purchases from licensed FFL dealers are highly regulated, require background checks and the gun is registered. Individuals may sell their personal property without regulation and that is the loop hole that needs to be fixed to keep guns out of the hands of unqualified people. It is those who really don't understand guns that are making the most noise in a well meaning but illogical and misguided campaign to ban what they don't fell is needed. Laws are to protect our liberty from those who would attempt to deprive us of it for what they believe is a righteous cause. Many countries are fighting for that same liberty with guns against a corrupt suppressive government who would continue to remain in control if not for those armed citizens. Our Bill Of Rights insures we will never have that problem no matter how many righteous people attempt to disarm all citizens because of the fear of a few. It is the price of freedom. We can regulate better but we can not succeed at banning anything. Prohibition should have made that clear. The war on drugs is a repeat episode of enriching criminal organizations through bans. When will we learn that there are better options than bans?
Why not have a few teachers who are thoroughly trained have quick accesses to assault rifles that are LOCKED up until a warning system is sounded? The key here is the guns are NOT being worn or accessible to anyone but a few trained personnel.
YOU GO MR PRATT!!!!
Piers you are so full of crap always trying to make someone look bad just because you see things little...
Do not believe this close minded news so called media person...so bias!!
Read this american cop visits Calgary Canada.
Piers, I agree with you totally on this. However the way you are going about this debate is probably upsetting all those around you. Yelling and constantly attacking them before they can even get a sentence finished! Let them speak and then state how wrong they are. I for one wanted to see more of the police officer who you cut off and didn't let finish her story. Bring her back!
Gun control in your country can be obtained but it has to be some give and take. I have a suggestion for gun owners and gun control advocates. From what I understood from an interview you have numerous target ranges...why can't you build government controlled high security gun locker facilities at these ranges and that is where the high powered weapons remain and that is where the responsible gun owners go to shot it. Just offering my suggestion. Insteading of arguing with one another starting putting your ideas and solutions out there!
Jack Trapper...your dumb...where have you been Obama???
haha...I am trying not to upset a lot of people, and trying to be the middle man, and letting Joe Bidden do my dirty work...
Let's talk about U.S. Border Patrol Agent who was Killed from a FAILED Operation Fast & Furious.
Let's talk about obama's excutive to seal the records from the public to protect attorney general eric holder.
WE DID NOT FORGET.
WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE TRUTH AND THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FROM THIS FAILED AND DEADLY OPERATION THAT PUT OUR U.S. BORDER PATROL AGENTS LIVES AT RISK.
Irrelevant here. Stay on the topic please!
I respect and admire you for doing the tough interviews. Let me start by saying I am a legal gun owner and have been around guns since I was 5 years old. I do not own an AR15, but I have police friends that do. The majority of legal gun owners enjoy taking these guns to licensed ranges and shooting them.In all of these discussions people keep leaving out one important item. Our societies have become so intrigued with violence that it is growing by leaps and bounds. If you look at television shows, movies, video games, and other recreational paintball war games.Society, especially kids, have become obssessed with this violence. Our news media focuses on violence and this killing.
I am not going to go into all the details, but it has to start in our homes with our children. The kids think nothing of killing because they see it everyday from these games to the news. We as adults have to lead. People in America are afraid of tyranny and rules regulating the freedom to do things legally. I agree with controlling the sale of secondary guns, I believe in registering guns. The sad part is that if someone wants to do carnage like Newtown and Aurora they will find a way. We as humans will not be able to regulate these killings until we as parents take responsibilty for teaching and demanding from our kids the decency of what God has taught us to treat everything in this world.
That is to respect life at all cost. Even if you have to give your life for that respect.
Piers Keep doing the job you are and make people think and lead and not just follow! Thank you again.
I was amazed that Piers' program tonight was narrated by a foreigner and the two main experts on the panel were foreigners. I was surprised the UN wasn't there to add their comment on the shortcomings of our way of life. I think Piers would be more at home in England or Australia.
Pierce asked who would want to own such a weapon? I think it is important to remember that for much of this country, perhaps outside of Manhatten and parts of California, that gun sports are a hobby. The people that I have know to be involved with hobby shooting, the types of people who would look to purchase this typo of weapon, have been extremely proficient and extremely careful about the safety in using and storing these weapons.
It is also.important to not that "military style" weapons are not the same as military weapons. A semi-automatic AR 15 is no different than 9mm pistol in terms of rate of fire . The only difference is the.look.of.the.weapon.
As a prior service member I have always wanted to own my service weapon that I deployed to Afghanistan with...a.M4 carbine. It is important to.note that I cannon obtain t.themilitary version of this.weapon.
I'm not a villain. The majority of gun owners are law
abiding citizens. Moving forward, we could.legislate clip size, caliber size, etc. We should also look at gun safety course as part of ownership and address mental health and its reporting as part ofgun. ownership. Finally, we need to address ilegal guns on the street.
My heart goes out to the victims of the Sandy Hook school massacre. Unfortunately, this tragedy is being milked by a sensationalistic press and politicians bent on padding their bottom line rather than being honest with the public. There have been other disasters such as plane crashes, fires, earthquakes, and more which have not received nearly as much attention, but involved far more casualties, including children. Timothy McVeigh murdered far more children and over a hundred and twenty adults without firing a single shot. Instead he used a large homemade bomb. The anti gun lobby is using this tragedy to push their agenda, rather than admitting that the only way to stop the crazed gunman was to identify him as violently mentally ill and lock him up for life. The only way to stop violence is to stop violent people. It is quite humorous how the same bleeding heart leftist liberals who push gun control also champion the rights of heinous criminals at the expense of the rights of their victims. If you want to stop the violence, we must be willing to lock violent criminals up for life or execute them.
I believe in the second amendment, there should not be any ban on the gun just the ammunition, accessibility, the security of these guns in the homes of owners, there are responsible Americans out there. I am a veteran, so now after serving my country you're saying I can't own one of those? 38 of 50 of my ranger friends died for this same right! I support no ban just tightened regulations! Owners should physically prove that they have a secure location for such fire arm.
98% of people having, keeping and using guns, rifles, assult weappons, etc including law enforcement and military do not have sufficient knowledge on how to use and handle them. It is a huge problem that exist and there shall be needed changes, further most of the people in possession of weappons, guns, etc having no real justifications to own them in regard to self defense. New rules are neccessary on how to transport them, carry them, store them including the munition, and additionally there should be inspections in regard to any weapon, gun including bullets or munitions, violators should have mandatory jail time for failed inspections as well as if you carry any weapon or gun illegally or not for defense or professional purposes. All guns weapons should be stored in a safe and secured to not be fired by any person exept its owner, assult weapons should be locked secured all the times as it done by only a few police forces in the world. There are available storage safes for assult weapons that can be mounted in homes cars etc.
Additionally there is a lax of school for holders of weapons, guns and most importantly the issue of self defense, if all the applicants would have to pass such a test we would have surely less guns and weapons in virculation-does an applicant or law enforcement officer really know what is self defense and when a owner of a gun or weapon is authorized to respond with his gun or weapon, i really think that the applicants or owner of weapons/guns would give disasterous incorrect answers
Your comments are obviously well intentioned and you make some very good points but you lose all credibility when you quote ridiculous numbers without facts. I take exception to your assumptions. I have owned over 60 firearms, currently own a couple of dozen including several assault type rifles from various countries in several calipers and many handguns and two legally registered suppressors. They are all legally registered and safely stored in gun safes in a locked room. I have had a concealed carry permit in three states and had to take the same training courses in all three states. I am an excellent marksman and a member of my local range but have never shot at a human or animal. I am not a member of the NRA or any other group and have no military training. I'm 60 years old and live in a state with a super volcano under foot and grizzly bears, elk, moose and wolves running wild. In my state people are allowed to carry a gun in the open or in their vehicle without a permit. People who live where people carry guns for personal protection are usually very polite to each other, respect each others rights and are well trained in their personal defense weapons. I have lived in many states and don't find myself to be extremely different from most gun owners everywhere that I have known. For you to make summary judgements on gun owners without the least bit of knowledge is as offensive and silly as saying that 99 percent of people with a pick up truck is a hillbilly and probably hasn't been properly trained to drive. Why is it that this gun control debate brings out the worst side of people who are only trying to do good and don' t have a clue how much they are dividing this country by attempting to deprive harmless law abiding citizens of their legal rights. Walk a mile in my shoes before you tell me how or what I need to defend myself, please.
You've made some steep claims. That 98% of mlitary and police aren't adaquatly train to handle.their.own service weapons? What are you credentials?
Don't believe u if a junkie puts a gun to your head u are dead so don't lie just say u don't like guns it's ok that is YOUR RIGHT !!!!
Looking on twitter EVEN WITH THE WORLD commenting not just americans WONDER WHY P MORGAN DID THAT ....to SKEW A BIT his WAY!! meanwhile looking at cnn comments MSNBC and huffpost comments and LOOKS like the comments are swinging the pro gun way about 2 to 1 ......
Where is the opposing view Piers .... you can't out shout the 2nd amendment and You can't justify your dissection of the American peoples right to protect themselves and right to bear arms, First it's Semi Autoatic guns, next it will be all rifles , next it will behand guns , whittling it down to eventually a total gun ban and abolition of the 2nd amendment, If you really care about getting to the root of the problem, you are not going to get there by attacking the guns, .Bottom line is it wasn't AR15's that killed these innocents it was a Whack job just like the Whack job in China that hacked up 30 only difference was The Chinese Whack Job used a Knife...If Whacks want to kill they will find a way
Piers, I agree with you about pretty much everything you say about gun control and share your disgust with recent events in CT. However, you are contributing to the American culture of fear and aggression by your style of interviewing free gun rights proponents. Shouting those you don't agree with down is part of what is wrong with America: Nobody is able to have a civil discourse or debate about anything with people who disagree with them. I would think that CNN wouldn't want to emulate the FOX News style of letting the interviewer and interviewee just shout at each other. It makes no sense and it is unintelligible. Please show that Europeans still have a bit more class than Americans and that Europeans can debate controversial issues without resorting to insults. You have a good show and are a vast improvement on Larry King. Please keep having a good show and don't let it degenerate into shouting matches.
Tom, I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment on Morgans style. Bulling, aggressively badgering, name calling, and shouting down those with differing opinions is definitely the sign that you may not have an argument, just an opinion, also in his case, control of the microphone.. I could nto believe his rude "you are a stupid man " remark. He, and CNN have decided to blatently work a political change by reprsenting only 1 side of a very complex issue. "Journalism" it isn't, journalists, they aren't. Welcome to the world of biased reporting. I wonder if it will be like George Orwell's "1984", when the "news" networks will change the reports periodically. Imagine CNN becoming FOX, and vice versa.. The absurdity would be complete.
Piers Morgan one clueless human being
Is it supposed.to.be a.fair.slate? The panes seemed a.bit one sided.
I just love it when I read stuff like 'There is absolutely no reason we need assault weapons' ... like he's speaking for me and telling me I have no need for an assault weapon- well, I beg to differ, If you don't need one fine with me, but I want one and it's nobody's business why. Sorry but the Genie's been out of the bottle for awhile now and we'll always have guns around no matter what – I have to give up my semi auto with the big scary clip so that this twit can safer? Got some bad news for ya Sunshine – The gun laws we have in place worked as intended because Adam Lanza TRIED to buy a gun BEFORE he stole his mothers guns and committed murder. Thsi should tell you 2 things – we don't need more stringent laws because the one in place worked as intended – and of course that the law in place didn't stop this from happening anyway.
It was horrible what happened to those children, however, guns are not responsible. Our society is responsible for what had happened. Mental illness is look as taboo, swept under the carpet and most of all not look at as a serious issue. We don’t treat the people properly because the insurance companies, Medicaid, and our doctors are not willing nor equipped to deal with them properly. Families with major mental illness hide their problems and turn their heads in shame. To do nothing is the crime. Our laws for patient’s privacy rights are a complete failure. WE have a right to know if there is a sycophantic or any other violent based mental illness person in the community as much as we do a pedophile or offender. If someone is violent or has a major mental illness at a young age it is the parents that are responsible and they should be held accountable if they do nothing.
Let’s face it America, we use to put mentally ill people in special hospitals throughout history. When did it stop and why do we let these people walk free on our streets. If they can be helped, help them. If they can’t be a non-violent productive part of society, they should be removed no matter what.
In addition, our court system is a complete failure. If you kill someone in the first degree, you should hang for it. It should not take 30 years and 20 million dollars to do it. A swift death penalty needs to be throughout the USA. The media needs to stop sensationalizing / grandstanding news like this for their profits. What happened in this school happens every day throughout the world.
I have never seen such a group of idiots reporting a horrible event like this. It looks to me the only ones to gain from such a tragedy is the media and special interest groups.
America, mental health and society’s blind eye did this not guns.
Love NRA!!!!!!!!! Love my rights!! Love God!!! Love guns...but I wish people could understand where gun lovers come from..
piers morgan. quit causing trouble in America. Gio back to england.
You want a good reason to own a certain firearm?
Move your entire family near the border where gangs and illegals willing to do anything will come across your propery at will hours away from the nearest police department.
And put a sign on your home this is a GUN FREE ZONE and YOU have absolutely NO way of defending YOUR family against a group of illigeals or criminals.
Terrible town hall with a rude host. Why have an opposing view on if you call him a liar and not let him defend his position? I am not even an American and I cant stand the arrogant jerk. CNN would be wise to fire this biased bully.
Israel arms its teachers to protect their children.
When you make a "gun free zone" you provide a shooting gallery for those who have no respect for the rule of law or are deranged.
With problems in the past with some teachers hurting & molesting kids it makes sense to conduct thorough background checks & allow concealed weapons on responsible teachers. The 2nd Amendment is meant to allow us to protect ourselves from a tyranical government & those who would do us harm. Which seems a problem we are confronted more each day. A very sad state of affairs.
At least Piers is DOING what he can by hosting an open debate & providing a forum for discussion of the gun issues. What are the rest of you doing? If you own guns, are you checking them once & checking them twice to be sure they are safe? If you have a child or adult relative with anger & aggression issues, regardless of diagnosis, what are you doing to get help for that person? We each are accountable for ourselves & whoever we are responsible for as well.
A major issue is how millions of military-style semi & fully automatic weapons came to be sold to civilians within the past 2 decades. Was it due to not having defense contracts because there were no wars after Desert Storm ended in 1992? Did gun manufacturers then look to other sources of revenue from civilians? OBL certainly did them a huge favor on 9/11/01 then & they hyped the fear factor to sell millions more military-style assault weapons to civilians. Therefore, I would like to see a healthy investigation into the marketing of such assault weapons to civilians.
So Piers ~ Please host another panel of financial experts that follow the money!! Hugs ~ Moms
Tha was no debate. It was a one sided gang style attempted slaughter of an opposing view. If it was a debate the idiot host would have let the gun proponet speak. By the way, violent crime increased in both Australia and GB after they prohibited private gun ownership. Maybe the host should learn how to use google.
When is the last time you used your fire-extingusher?
Guess you don't need one???
I am grateful for men like Larry Pratt standing up for the safety and protection of our country. The point Piers Morgan misses is clear; arming teachers and providing proper training could save lives. Had one teacher had a CCW permit, 20 children might be alive today. What is that worth? Disarming law abiding citizens that are trained properly to use a firearm responsibly is the only solution to armed criminals! The choice is simple, do you want to be a dead victim or an alive American?
YOU ARE MY NEW HERO PIERS!
THANKS FOR STANDING UP FOR THE SENSIBLE IN THIS COUNTRY!
This wasn't a "discussion" – it was one petulant individual largely surrounding himself with those who share his particular beliefs. I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between Mr. Morgan and Bill O'Reilly, as both seem far more concerned with reinforcing their own echo chambers than with trying to establish any sort of understanding. Participants in actual discussions ideally seek better understanding of the other's point of view. Bleated hyperbole accomplished roughly the opposite. Why weren't the NRA, gun manufacturers, etc represented in your audience? Doesn't seem like much of a mystery from here.
Despite a near certainty that I'll be shouted down (literally or figuratively) I would respectfully point out a few things-
1.) No firearm is "literally" a weapon of mass destruction, including heavy machine guns. The real thing destroys cities, not classrooms. We all fervently hope and/or pray that there's never cause for Piers, CNN and the world ever finds this out firsthand.
2.) A bullet fired from a semi-automatic rifle is neither more- nor less- deadly than one fired from its single-shot counterpart. More rounds can absolutely be fired in a given period of time from the semi-auto, but there's nothing magically destructive imparted by certain weapons.
3.) What a gun -looks- like should be held distinct from how it functions. Folks don't like so-called assault weapons, but the definition of same seems pretty scant. August of '66 had Charles Whitman killing dozens of people from a bell tower in Austin using no semi-automatic weapons. Lee Harvey Oswald committed his crimes with an Italian surplus bolt-action rifle. Motivated crazy people have managed awful things long before AR-15's, and will do so for years to come.
4.) There's a long tradition of Americans employing formerly military weapons in peaceful sporting contexts – WW I Springfield and Enfield rifles modified for hunting, WW II M1 Garands and Korean M-14 rifles in marksman contests and – yes, now AR-15 pattern rifles now used for marksmanship. There have been heavily armed Americans for a very long time. Isn't it worth considering what -else- has changed?
5.) To the folks (on this blog and on the show) who seem to believe that the 2nd amendment was written with muskets in mind – can't the same rationale be applied to the -other- amendments? Are my first amendment rights invalid on the Internet (vs parchment and a quill pen or primitive printing presses)? Fourth amendment protections don't apply to telephones?
Don't get me wrong – things do need to change, and I'm not advocating teachers carrying concealed weapons. The shootings this year (and in years before) are absolute atrocities and need to stop. Bear in mind, though, that the conversation is going to be a whole lot more productive (and the changes a lot more effective) if they actually include folks who really understand this stuff. Here's a hint – if you find the entire concept of owning or firing a gun distasteful, chances are great that you're probably not a subject matter expert. Tons of debates on incredibly polarizing issues (abortion, energy, various wars, etc) managed to enlist the help of smart folks on both sides of the issue. Why would this critical issue be any different?
Your points were right on target. Very well said. I feel soory for the people so delusional that they think if we ban assault rifles, that would have saved lives. Perhaps if they are ever held at gun point by a criminal and live to tell the tale, they might rethink their view.
your my hero PRATT
Further we have to change as a society and educate people about the legal consequences when a person is using a gun, we must show less violence on tv, movies and cut all this law enforcement episodes, which are lacking to show the consequences- younger people are thinking that the the gun violent issues on tv or screen are only a play
Additionally people that do possess a gun or weapon and don't use them professionally should turn their weapons in , it would redude the risk that this weapons could find their way into wrong hands
Can we at least stop the escalation, It seems that the gun companies make a new gun bigger more fire power, we want them and the killers get them, then we want more, and the gun companies just keep getting richer and richer, on our need to escalate our fire power.
Maybe we could just agree today to stop right where we are, make no guns for personal ownership with any more fire power than we have right now.
Then make it retro active to maybe 1922.
Even following your logic this still leaves us with semiautomatic pistols, most shotgun designs, virtually all actual machine gun designs and -yes- semiautomatic rifles as well. If you want a ban, I'd suggest learning more about what it is you want to ban.
Not only is piers morgan getting rich in AMERICA.
I'm starting to think he is a george soros plant.
george soros the "finacial terrorist" in the world.
george soros and the liberal media are using peirs morgan as a plant to help divide and conquer.
to make America become more like england???
break down our money?
this administration has spent more than 43 previous Presidents with nothing to show for it but a poor economy, failed solyndra and a123 battery comany.
break down OUR 2A Rights to defend ourselves against atryrannical governement.
when obama said "we have more work to do"
he was NOT talking about jobs.
he was talking about "transforming America"
he wants to put liberal justices/judges of "EMPATHY" in our courts.
Beware of piers morgan.
Boycott piers morgan.
Please remember that you are a guest in this country. You should not take it upon yourself to tell us what we should or shouldn't do. How would you like it if I tried to dictate British law? I spent a year and a half living in England and I found the peoplke most enjoyable. You however I find most annoying! How dare you speak in such a manor! The second amendment is quite clear. Read it! For those who want to do away with it I would say what is next? Freedom of speach, freedom of religion? Please remember your world history. I had a friend who was killed by a drunk driver, that happends every day. Why no outrage over that? People are still using cars and even drinking. Cigaretts have killed millions, why are those not outlawed? I heard of a guy that was killed when a coke machine fell over on him, yet I see them everywhere! It seems to me that whatever is newsworthy and will give someone such as you Mr. Moron, I mean Morgan, a topic to stand on your soap box and tell everyone how important your opinion is, is your dream come true. You feel better about youself when you put down others. you sir are a sad little man and you offend me, please go back home... Guns are not the problem, just as cars and coke machines are not the problem. It's the people who use them that are the problem. Gun laws will take the guns away from the honest and will leave the crooks and crazies in power.
Piers. I watched your interview tonight. It's sad you must resort to calling someone stupid for stating the opinions and facts YOU asked them for. That was the most ridiculous, pathetic form of journalism I've seen in recent weeks, and there's been a lot of bad journalism. Your guest gave you the factual #'s you asked for. In China, on the same day as the Newtown massacre, a crazed maniac entered a school with a knife. He cut, stabbed, and slashed his way through approximately 22 children. Should we ban kitchen knives over a certain size now? Australians since the 1996 firearms legislation have witnessed a RISE in violent crimes. Making drugs illegal hasn't kept them off the street! Our 2nd amendment was not just about HOME defense Piers. It was designed to "not be infringed" because our forefathers understood that the general public should not be outgunned by their own government! Why should we be outgunned by our criminals??? Look at YouTube for crying out loud. At how many criminals have been stopped by sane, law abiding, gun toting citizens! The amount of crimes stopped far outnumbers the crimes perpetrated! You're anti liberty, anti freedom, "lay down and take it" rhetoric is the most disgusting and worrisome thing I've seen in recent days, other than the people of Sandyhook being left completely at the mercy of a mad man because of laws focused on infringing our God given rights. Wake up! Or shuttup.
Go Piers! I am as outraged as you are. Guns kill people! Enough is enough!
Piers, Sorry to see that you became too emotional and wasted first 30 mins of your show. Instead getting childish and picky with the AR Fan, you should have engaged all those luminaries into a good conversation to drive the cause. Why are you so sensitive when someone say you are British and don't understand America.. We all understand the frustration and disappointment, but that wasn't your job today..
1 – lower the drinking age to 18 (so these big adult kids arent stuck home playing video games and doing drugs rather than engaging with real people.
2 – Raise the gun ownership age to 25 (with licencing and training required).
Training or testing is required for driving a car or to go scuba diving, why not a gun?
This is a debate that will continue on, I do believe that one must be allowed to protect themselves, but I am not sure if it takes that many guns and ammunition to protect ones self. Maybe I am wrong and maybe some people do need a dozen guns and a bag load of ammunition to protect themselves. Protection is one thing, recreation is another. The Irony in this case is that those 6 guns did not protect, instead it took 27 innocent lives including the mother.
The argument that i hear is even a car can be dangerous in the hands of the wrong person, but how do you debate an argument that compares a gun to a car. One shoots bullets and the other is used for transportation. It is argument for the sake for arguing :(
regardless, my prayers are with the parents and their families.
I think the car comparison actually does bear out. A malicious individual can do a great deal of harm to a lot of people and, even more to the point, carelessness and a lack of regard and responsibility kill in far greater numbers than can be attributed to guns. I don't get behind the wheel unless I can be aware, focused and completely responsible and I wish I could say the same about my fellow drivers.
Put another way – consider the energy of about .15 oz of lead moving at 2600 feet per second vs that of 6000 lbs moving at 88 feet per second. The tragedy of thousands of children maimed and dying because of the actions of drunken and negligent individuals is just as real and just as awful to those involved as the events of last Friday.
I'm so sad for these kids, im so sad for the killers, I'm so sad for people with any kind of weapon in their posession, I'm so sad for the selffish people who keep thinking their rights to get a gun for fun are more important than a live, I'm so sad for this world. Drugs, brain wash video games, weapons everywhere, brain wash tv,movies, internet and absence of parents on kids lives bring these killer brains to my world, some kill like these, others kill lives by abusing, kidnaping, raping, striking, killing souls and themselves. Please take out all the agressive video games, take out the drugs, take out the guns, take out evil information on the internet, no more killers heroes and enemies on movies, no more kill for fun, not even to animals. Lets become back to what we really are: human beings with good feelings, emphathy, love.
I would want to take all the toys from kids as weapons, guns, agressive video games, evil posters, etc, etc from my neighborough, from my school, from all the schools around, from all the kids of America and convert all them in an art piece , a very big mural make on those staff, showing our change, the real change kids like me really want.
Why do you need a Corvette, BMW or Hummer?
Why do you need a speed boat or private jet.
Big House or Rolex?
There is NO difference between a lever-action .22 and a Fully Automatic Machine Gun.
You are either law-abiding or your not.
You are either safe or your not.
A full auto is like a race car, dragster ofr funny car.
Nascar fans might understand this....
It is a special piece of equipment with special rules used in a special place.
If you are a safe and legal owner this is YOUR RIGHT in AMERICA.
FYI: Full Auto Regulations.
You need a letter of recomendation from someone in the police dept.
You have to be fingerprinted. EVERY FINGER.
$200 Background check/stamp fee
Approx. over two months to get permit
Buy it from a FFL Federal Firearm Licensed Class III Dealer
Letter from authorities to take out of state.
Where your going, how long you will be there and when you are returning.
Can't not let it out of your sight or in the hands of others.
VERY STRICT LAWS.
You are raising a society tha you can't even trust with a plastic fork or knife.
Since when do you need to press a bizzer and look into a camera to attend school?
Something is wrong and it's NOT the guns.
Liberalsm is KILLING America.
Taking GOD and Values out of a child's life and replacing them with gay-marraige and legalizing drugs is the problem'
Look I don't care what you do in your OWN home but this bs does NOT belong in the schools and a child's foundation.
No wonder they'r eso confused.
These kids have nothing in their lives other than social media, facebook, liberal bias media that slants the truth.
And a bunch of liberals that want to savwe the world by destroying it.
OH yea save lives ban guns ....yet 75k lives lost per year in Alcohol sales and 45 k killed in car crashes.......is about saving lives or placing a liberal agenda ?
I am usually on the left side of the political spectrum. And, my natural impulses move me to support more gun regulation. I hate guns. i served in Vietnam. However, at least in the short term, except for some minor adjustments which I believe most of us will support, I do not believe more restrictive regulation will work. The tragic assaults will continue. There are 300 million guns in this country. I am sure that many fully automatic assault weapons are available on the black market. I also understand the natural impulses of gun supporters. Mother nature has given them a very strong survival instinct. They will never be able to defend themselves against an evil government. Government has tanks, missiles, fighter jets and bombers. But, they should be able to determine for themselves what kind of weapon they need to defend themselves against an assault on their homes by the typical home invader. The schools can hire armed security to repel deadly assaults. I would support raising taxes to support such efforts. As for the rest of us. we live in a dangerous world. We should pay our fair share of taxes to provide policemen, fireman and emergency medical services in addition to any guns we choose to own for our own protection. Whether gun regulation may pay off in the very long term is another question. I would guess that guns may eventually become obsolete as other methods and tools are developed for our personal protection.
You want stats? There are approximately 80,000 deaths attributable to excessive alcohol use each year in the United States. In 2010, there were approximately 189,000 emergency rooms visits by persons under age 21 for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol
I have a suggestion for everyone who has an opinion about Piers Morgans professional behavior as the host of a major news network show that is supposed to present fair and unbiased news. If you think Piers sets a proper example for CNN then please write them and let them know. If you feel that he is an embarrassment to journalism by insulting anyone who doesn't support his personal crusade, then write CNN and tell them that you will quit watching their network until Piers makes a public apology or resigns and then write to their sponsors and tell them the same thing. This has nothing to do with your personal belief in gun ownership or gun control. This is simply about a bully being verbally abusive on a TV network who has made a great effort to discuss the evil effects of bullying and violence. Violence often begins as a result of verbal abuse and in reaction to bullies. If you feel this behavior is inappropriate for TV then join me in boycotting CNN and their sponsors until they put an end to it. This is not a reality show this is supposed to be news.
I can't believe how many people state on this thread that they are fully for the 2nd amendment, but don't see why AR15's are needed. Read your bill of rights again people!
Piers, to use your own words, YOU ARE AN IDIOT and a poor excuse for a journalist. Journalism is about finding the truth, not ensuring you bully and cutoff everyone that doesn't agree with your message.
Paul you are an idiot!! When are people like you going to wake up and see how stupid and uncivilized you make your country look like.
Keep up the good fight Piers and keep making these gun advocates look like the fools they are.
i love how your blog says dont use any profanity, foul language, let me say piers morgan u think you any better? u are a ruthless u know what on live television u call people stupid and so on, u so full of sh....... u making a big deal about guns, when your on country can even take care of this situation, with they own crime, maybe u should go back where u come from, u are unbelieveable. u are that kind of person that would grab a gun to protect themself but here u want to get rid of them, that does not make any common sense. since when a criminal would obey the law?????????????????. i dont see how u can sleep at night, with all the grab u try to tell those ppl...smh!!!!! same to our president, yeah lets get rid of the guns, hey president lets do that, lets live in your little white house without protection,,,,,,yes way to go..we have to protect our president, but not our children in our schools since teachers are not allowed to carry weapons, u are all such hypocrites...WAY TOO GOOOOOOOOOOO
You use your country, Britain, as an example of where strict gun control laws and gun bans have worked. While gun homicides in Britain are extremely low, maybe you could explain why violent crime and the overall homicide rate in Britain is the highest in Western Europe. Your country's close European neighbors own substantially more guns, and yet have much lower homicide rates than Britain. In your show recently you have used Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy and Spain as other examples of where gun homicides rates are very low, however what you have failed to tell your audience is that these countries are some of the largest gun owning nations on the planet. Switzerland and Germany for instance are the 3rd and 4th largest gun owning nations in the world, but yet both have overall homicide rates that are 30% lower than Britain's. Guns are clearly not the problem, because if they were, these countries would all have substantially higher homicide rates than Britain, where very few guns are privately owned. Maybe the question that needs to be asked is why are some societies, like Britain, more violent than others?
Sabine, you have the nerve to be calling people hypocrite, the teachers are there to teach and not to be law enforcement. Sure our President has to be protected, he is protected by trained law enforcement officers. If guns are taken out of the hands of ordinary people, there would be less killings. America is becoming a WAR ZONE. These semi automatic riffles were bought not for protection, they were in event there is an uprising in America. So saying that these guns were bought for protection is a total lie.
Despite what you keep claiming, reported gun crime in Britain has doubled since 1997, when the gun ban in Britain was put in place. Multiple reports in the British press in 2009 confirm this. Gun crime doubles in a decade were the headlines.
It's so sad that the so called "Land of the Free" are so fearful and distrustful of each other that they think they have to all carry guns- this is 2012 not the Wild West -grow up USA!!!
Also the 2nd AMENDMENT by its name indicates it has previously been AMENDED so amend it again!! And this time to "We have the right to BEAR CHILDREN without fear of them being slaughtered by our neighbours"
STOP CHOOSING YOUR GUNS OVER YOUR CHILDREN!!!! Sad people.
Loving watching you verbally attack the incredibly stupid gun lobby Piers – keep going you have all our support!
Piers sucks. He's spreading ignorance in the interest of ratings. Stop throwing the term "assault weapon" around. It's a politically charged, loaded term. Beyond that, it's flat out incorrect. By definition, an "assault rifle" has to support either burst or fully automatic fire. The AR-15 does neither, and it's trigger mechanism is incapable of being modified to give it those capabilities. It merely looks like the military's M4. The fire rate is not that different than any other semiautomatic hunting rifle(though I will concede that I understand the issue taken with magazine size), and it fires a smaller, less powerful round than most semiauto sporting rifles.
I am not a gun nut; I don't even own a gun, nor do I intend to anytime in the foreseeable future. I do favor a lot of the reforms being proposed(closing gun show loopholes, greater interstate communication regarding the mentally ill, etc), but demonizing a bunch of guns just because they look scary is pointless. To anyone who knows anything about firearms, the fact that you're spreading falsehoods in the interest of sensationalism will invalidate your opinion on the issue(as it should). I wish I could have been at your very biased town hall meeting last night.
Piers, you suck. Just shut up already.
Some guns don't just 'look' scary. They kill people at unbelievable rate. How much more scary do you need before they had to be taken off the streets.
Somebody should make a bumper sticker 'REPLACE SEMI-AUTOMATIC WITH MUSKETS'

Does anybody know the name of the police officer who was on this show who gave her exper opinion on the AR (Armalite Rifles)?
I am usually to the left of the fence on such matters but Piers Morgans comments outraged me so that I have begun to see how important guns are to this country and the foundation that it's built upon. Every american knows, understands and accepts this as a part of what makes us American's. Morgan's choice to assert himself into the affairs of the american people from a position of power and influence is unacceptable from a non-american and from a citizen of the country that we defeated to gain our independence from in the first place. He should have better sense than to speak so arrogantly about that of which his ancestors have not fought and died for and which he sees so blindly from one side. I find his comments unacceptable and ignorant. He took such a forceful view as to call american's demeaning names simply because of their allegiance to the principles that this country was founded upon. I have never owned a gun but I am in the process of procuring an AR15 for myself as I write this. All the credit for this purchase goes to Piers Morgan and his ignorance and arrogance. I guess you kind of showed me the light and I thank you for that Piers. As for you CNN, I have always thought of you to be the premiere source for legitimate and honest news but for you to allow this guest in our country to be such a power force over issues that could potentially divide us as a nation I have to say I am shocked and its clear to me that Ted has little to any say over the content of what CNN is subjecting the american people to. He's too honorable a man to allow a fear ridden British national to spread his paranoid fear to the american people over the airwaves that he built from the ground up. It's supposed to be the number one news source in the world because its honest and accurate, not because it knows how to get ratings. Shame on you CNN. Take action against this arrogant threat to our harmony and quality of life or say goodbye to a longtime friend.
