READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
As America nears the one week mark since an unthinkable school shooting shocked the nation with the harsh reality of 20 dead children, on Wednesday evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" produced a very special edition of it's program, filling the studio with a live audience for a town hall style show.
Seated in the center of the room, host Piers Morgan welcomed, amongst others, Christiane Amanpour to share her unique expertise on firearms, specifically the types used in the Newtown, Conn. massacre and other recent mass shootings:
"You've been in war zones all over the world. It is as near to an M-16 machine gun, assault rifle, as you can get, isn't it?" Morgan asked his guest, CNN's Chief International Correspondent.
"You know, it is. And I can visualize the state of affairs in those classrooms in Sandy Hook because I've seen that on the battlefield, in Sarajevo and Somalia, what's going on in Syria right now. And it is about those particular weapons," Amanpour revealed.
"I look out and I realize that two years ago, I conducted a town hall just like this in the aftermath of the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of those people around here in Tucson," said the host of CNN's "Amanpour," as she addressed an audience full of survivors, and relatives of those killed, in various United States shootings, including Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Tucson. "Some of the same people who were there are here today, victims' families, all people crying out for at least - at the very least, a dialogue, a sensible, rational conversation, a national discussion where we're not afraid to call it like it is."
Continuing to focus on the Tucson shooting of January 2011, Morgan spoke to audience member Daniel Hernandez, who was able to provide unique, first-hand insight from the events of that day:
"The other thing that I think is really important to raise is the reason why Jared Loughner only killed six people, the reason why only 13 were injured, was because he had to reload the weapon. He had a semi-automatic weapon, but he had an extended clip that had 30 rounds," Hernandez explained. "The time that he stopped was when someone grabbed that clip when he was trying to reload. There's no reason you need 30 rounds in a magazine."
Also joining Wednesday's live program was Amardeep Kaleka, whose father was killed in the Sikh Temple shooting. A gun owner himself, with an ROTC background, he painted a unique picture as to the design and intention behind military grade weapons:
"Those guns aren't meant for protection, they are meant for annihilation. To deter somebody is quite easy," Kaleka explained, using his late dad as an example. "You can deter somebody with a knife like my father did, he wrestled this guy with a knife, a butter knife, and that guy immediately left the building."
Watch the clips, and listen to the interview, as Amanpour, Hernandez, and Kaleka all further explain what they describe as unnecessary dangers associated with assault weapons, and the legislative steps that need to be taken to eliminate such American mass shootings in the future.

Piers Morgan is an idiot. He would never give anyone that didn’t have his same views on gun control a chance to talk. This whole show of his was one sided. He needs to go back to England since it’s a much safer place to live. Piers you said you have lived here seven years and you act like you want to head up changing our 2nd amendment rights. Go home sir ……
Piers is a rude, bombastic and preposterous 'journalist'. His show has become the new Jerry Springer talk show of CNN. Piers – you are protected under our free speech amendment, however your callous behaviour towards your guests that have differing opinions is extremely unprofessional. BTW at anytime – please excersie your right to return to the UK. Perhaps you will be much happier to live where you came from?
I thought the show last night might have been more evenly balanced, but Mr. Morgan would not let that happen. It seems that his only reason to invite pro-gun guests are to humiliate them, which he can do since he is the moderator and controls the show. He asks those quests questions, then does not let them answer, then launches a tirade against what they believe. I can certainly understand his grief regarding all those tragic deaths that occurred recently, but he lacks the authenticity of a true journalist to be conducting these shows on this particular topic. He should just let the pro-gun people talk. Many of them will make fools of themselves without Mr. Morgan's assitance.
+100 He can take his dumb butt back to the UK
Piers has an anger management issue. Inviting guests and then berating them and calling them idiots is totally unprofessional. CNN needs to get him a sedative. While we are all upset and shocked by what happened in the killing of Newtown children, even the parents have more composure and respect to fellow Americans than Piers Morgan. He actually is trying to use and manipulate this tragedy for his own angry agenda. Time for him to move on and stop being a bully himself.
I would certainly advocate keeping guns and sharp objects away Piers, I might even suggest boxing him up and sending him home to his Orwellian government in England where he might be more comfortable breast feeding off the government. Asade from advocating for other idiots on the left what is he doing here?
Scott Fulmer, what makes you think we want him back?
We tried it and don't like him. Don't you have a return policy?
What Mr Morgan did yesterday is to call a spaid a spaid. You have been blinded by your ignorance that's your problem. Why the hell don't you vanish with your guns. This is a new world order, get ready the silent majority is sick of gun loving morons like you. Guns are killing innocent people and tomorrow your kin will turn on you. This will be quite horrable won't it ? Now like a good boy apologies to Mr Morgan now.
You are part of the problem.
If you were a Mom against idots you could explain why Chicago had 500 people die from murder in one year alone. That city has one of the tightest gun control in the nation. Don't anyone care about those people? Mom can also explain why the state of Virgina gun sales increased and their murder rate declined...
I never once said I was a gun lover. In fact I don't even own a gun. What I want that blithering idiot (my right to freedom of speech) is to listen his guests in a non judgemental way and let all sides of the debate be heard. Unless Piers is giving a commentary, he needs be neutral. An apology to him – I don't think so. He needs to apologize to the public for his tantrams.
Right on! American knee-jerk gun nuts are going ape here.
As a person who spent 21 years in the military and has been around weapons for most of my life, I find weapons to be very safe in the hands of responsible individuals. Years ago as I was growing up, you never heard of mass school shootings. True there was the occasional incident with weapons; however few and far between what is going on today. I attribute this to the way we were raised years ago. Back then you had structure and discipline in the household, and once they took that away from parents you now face kids today with no fear of their parents, doing what they want, when they want to. They talk back to parents and treat them like dirt. I don't blame the guns, I blame the government as well as those parents who take their mentally ill kids to gun ranges and put guns in their hands, and also take off for days at a time leaving those guns in the house where their mentally ill kids have access to them. Parents need the education, the tools, and above all the WISDOM to know right from wrong where weapons are concerned...........a concerned vet!!!!!!!!!!!!
i agree... Thank you Piers... we do not need automatic weapons ..... you would change your mind if that was your child laying alone bleeding to death..
If history has shown us anything about bans or passing laws to try and force a few people to be responsible in dealing with dangerous products is that it has always ended with increases in crime, more people being killed, increase in new organized crime gangs, but most of all it ends up being a costly failure. Go back and look at the history in the 1920's in regard to alcohol being outlawed. This did not slow the flow of alcohol but it did increase the power and reach of organized crime into what it is today. We have had laws to outlaw drugs and yet each night they are on the news along with the crimes that take place due to illegal drug trade. And lets not forget the very powerful and rich drug crime organizations that our laws have helped to make possible. What about other crimes we have laws against that try to get a few people to be moral that have done nothing to slow down the problem like texting or talking on a cell phone while driving. How about drinking and driving these laws do not stop the crime yet know one has asked to ban cell phones or cars. We could pass a law and make all guns a crime to have but it will not stop those who wish to commit crimes or do harm from having a gun. The problem we need to work on when it comes to these problems is mental problems. We need to fund mental health and human services and intervene in the lives of children who need help to the point of removal from the home. We need to look a the policies of country's that have guns as a right and yet have low gun crimes and ask ourselves what are they doing right that we can copy. Look at Sweden with guns owned of 32 per 100 people and a gun crime rate of only 1. 5 per 100,000. Facts are from GunPolicy.org. Their citizens own "assault weapons" and the evil "high cap magazines". Lets not hurry to take the Rights and Freedoms we have away do to mental health problems of others. We can over come this with better funding and care of people who have mental problems. Please understand that gun owners wish this never to happen again and back ground checks should be done before anyone anywhere can buy a gun and that includes individual to individual sales. But lets not fool ourselves into a faults since of security with a gun ban. The Brits have very tight gun control but is was not long ago someone walked into one of their schools and did the same thing that has happened here in the US. The problem there was the man had mental problems. I hope this helps all who read it to be careful about the removal of our rights as US citizens. It would be a shame if we are such fools to give up what others have died to make sure we have.
There is only one conclusion about you: your intelligence quotient does not surpass that of the average rock.
This is about that mom, who is against "idiots".....
There is only one conclusion about you: your intelligence quotient does not surpass that of the average rock.
You piece of British conquered trash. Go Home!! We don't espose your collectivist trash ideals or your big mouth spewing a tissue of lies! nor do we appreciate you grand standing with your biased trash reporting over innocents slaughtered.(remember the daily mirror 1994, when you were fired!!) you have no right sounding off about destroying the second amendment you foreigner. What we need is more guns and teachers and principles armed, trained and deputized. That'll put an end to this mysterious syndrome of sudden mass shootings... Go home you foreign piece of trash! We don't want you or your kind here in our beloved republic!
Dude, relax..... I have a gun but I don't see why you need a machine gun, what are you afraid of that you would need a machin gun? You must be a coward or something..... Get a shot gun, a revolver and practice shooting, then you won't need a machine gun ....
The anger that Piers Morgan demonstrated is mild compared to the rage that most Americans feel today toward you gun wielding cowboys who try to prove your manhood by gunning down children.
Scott, very few outside America can relate to the gun mania that prevails in your country. The gun lobby exercises influence so powerful that politicians are afraid to challenge the myth that owning guns and assault weapons somehow equates to being free. The opposite is true. Your post displays the ignorance that stifles debate of the issues.
Larry King would conduct in interview in a civilized intelligent manner. He would ask the right questions and listen to the other persons answer, leaving the viewer to form their own opinion.
Piers Morgan is no Larry King.
My posts seem to vanish on this web site. Anyone else have that happen?
GUN CONTROL DOES NOT WORK. PERIOD. END OF SENTNCE.
"Gun Control Works" is the new BIG LIE!
The 2nd Amendment is NOT about carrying weapons specifically intended to kill the greatest number of people in the shortest time possiblel I may not always like or agree with Piers Morgan, but I am grateful that he is being outspoken on this issue. Wake up America! A country where everyone is rushing to buy assault weapons and stockpile ammo is NOT a free country!!
You're right it's about protecting ourselves from the tyranny of our own government. Liberty is maintained by an armed citizenry and if you had studied in school you might understand this!
"Liberty is about having an 'armed citizenry'" Yeah Right! Say you have a provocative opinion about something. And say you want the liberty to express that opinion. And say someone in your little audience has the legal right to stand there fondling an assault weapon. And say he has a mentality like Timothy McVeigh's, or like yours. How "free" are you to speak? Would you feel any freer if you were holding an assault rifle talking to a crowd of people also holding them? Get real! You really think there's "liberty" where you stand to be shot for speaking your mind? As was Gabby Gifford in Tucson?
Not everyone Millie, and they are what keep nations free of repressive government. Stalin and Hitler had gun control too, and that didn't work out to well for millions of unarmed civilians did it?
Agreed Scott. I don't need a self-righteous European ( the architects of colonialsm, imperialism, 2 world wars and the holocaust), lecturing me on the fundamental rights (see Heller) available to all Americans. He really is an offensive cuss if you ask me. He goes from Britain's Got Talent or whatever show that was to Larry King's post. CNN has lost it. They have too many foreigners (mostly from Europe or India) talking down to Americans. I am sick of it and sick of him. By the way, Don Lemon, Soledad O'Brien and Carole Costello should all move over to MSNBC. They are NOT journalists, they are liberal advocates.
I think you need to seriously educate yourself on European history. Referring to the English architects of 2 World Wars, and the holocaust, is epic scale ignorance. Europe is a continent, not a race, or a nation. The English rose up to fight those who initiated such things. I really hope you're not in politics.
However, I don't like Piers either, he's not an intellectual heavyweight, or even a decent media man. He's a Tabloid man.
Piers was brutal to that poor man who couldn't get an anwer in. But Piers did state he was very strong-willed about this issue of assault weapons...I guess that was some sort of apology for any hot-headed disrespect he may have given to those on his show. While I too agree that military-styled and grade rifles really have no place in society, except in the hands of those who defend us, banning them will not solve the problem of mass killings. If Piers will take a close look at all the mass shootings–which are conviently detailed in another article on cnn.com–he would find that most of the incidents occurred with the shooter and victims at a range less than 100 yards from each other. Even the shooting at Sandy Hook were very close, maybe 25 yards or less. Well Piers, handguns are very capable of killing at this close range. A person intent on killing, and planning it, will use whatever gun or weapon he/she can get. If assault weapons are banned, they will use handguns and shotguns. Most hanguns have 10-14 round clips. Piers–if I heard him correctly, stated the assault weapon could fire 95 round a second. Not sure what weapon he was talking about, but the old M16 in full auto could fire 750rounds/min. That equates to 12.5 rounds per second in full auto. If the weapons are not modified, so they fire in semi-auto mode, a person can fire rounds just as fast with a semi-auto pistol, as with an assault rifle. I would think that we citizens need to make weapons less readily accessible to those that might choose to kill with them. Lock the weapons in a safe that only "You" have access to.
It's a good point. There are apparently idiosyncrasies with mass killings. Perhaps it's psychology power trip, that enables the unhinged individual to feel capable of killing, where a handgun wouldn't. I don't know. But I think further research needs to be done in to the topic, before snap judgements and emotional borne decisions are made.
Did you know that every last mass shooting in the last 20 years was carried out by people on psychiatric drugs? We're not sure yet about Adam Lanza, but I think that says a lot, esp. when you consider that the medical world KNOWS that drugs like Prozac and Paxil and others induce thoughts/desires of violence, either against oneself or others. This is KNOWN.
Thanks Piers for championing this important cause. You are an island of rationale in an apparent sea of madness!
Lucky for the rest of us his thinking is not what you call rationale, otherwise there would be more killings more often.
It took the police 20 minutes to respond. In that time, this nut could have killed 50 people with a butter knife. It is not the weapon, it is the defense that is the problem.
Really??? 50 people with a butter knife??? ... Ladies and gentleman I present to you Tim, aka exhibit 'A' as to why the United States of America is doomed. Ignorance mixed with whole lot of stupidity
My, my, my...aren't we being literal today.
As an American that has an enormous amount of anger over the Newtown shootings (and all the others), i can relate to Piers frustration. We ought to be grateful that our global friends are supporting us in our time of grief. They feel our pain. The fact that Piers is British is of little consequence. Refusing to listen to common sense....no matter where it comes from....will only get you more senseless acts. Gun control is not about taking away your so-called right to protect yourself. It's about protecting our children from those that abuse that right.
Thats right Cat and it took the police 20 minutes to respond. In that time, this nut could have killed 50 people with a butter knife. It is not the weapon, it is the defense that is the problem.
I agree, children must be protected from the mentally ill by whatever means available...maybe if we had acted sooner we could have stopped our government from shipping all those guns to the Mexican drug cartels and those 300 men, women and children that were killed as a result could have been prevented.
Was watching CNN a saw a report on the solder that went nuts and shot a bunch of kids and woman in Afghanistan. Why don't they ban m4s in the army and protect the citizens of that country? People need to realize that the second amendment was not for Americans to protect their families or go hunting. It was written during the time of revolution and was included to protect its citizens from repression from an all powerful king. Don't take my word for it, look it up. Germany in the late twenties had the most progressive and tolerant government in the whole world up until the night of the "brown shirts" and the Nazies took power. Remind me again what happened to that scapegoated group of people? Please, don't believe that because you live in a "free" country that it could not happen here. People ask " why would someone need a ar15 or high capacity magazine", I ask why do people need a corvette when a civic will get you to work just as well. If someone is intent on killing you or themselves, they are going to do it. How many people do you personally know that was harmed by an assault rifle, and how many by auto accidents? Maybe we should ban cars. What about global warming? How many millions are going to die from that? Lets ban cow farts because the in increase in methane that is causing it. Please use your brain and educate yourself. By the way, the Mongols where responsible for the slaughter of approximately 40 million people with a sword and bow. Life is not fair and I am sorry for that. I am a father and I feel for those poor parents. Myself was hit head on my motorcycle by a three time drunk driver who got 120 days in jail and a 500 dollar fine. I lost my arm and spent a year learning to walk and I am in constant pain and can't support my family like the way they deserve. But guess what, people still drive drunk, the world still turns. I'm sorry but crap happens. It's not my or other responsible gun owners fault nor are responsible car operators to blame for my tails whoa. I hope they do pass real and sensible gun laws but do it smartly.
Dianne Feinstein carries a handgun. She talks about it in this video.
Stated at the top of this article
"Seated in the center of the room, host Piers Morgan welcomed, amongst others, Christiane Amanpour to share her unique expertise on firearms, specifically the types used in the Newtown, Conn. massacre and other recent mass shootings:"
What unique expertise does Amanpour have with firearms – specifcally AR-15,etc?
Just my guess but i don't think her expertise was in "types" of firearms. But more related to the damage these types of weapons cause. As she has been a journalist covering major conflicts in the world, i would dare say she has seen first hand what these weapons of mass destruction can do. Which in itself is "unique". The only time most of us have been privy to what these weapons can do is when the news reports another mass shooting.
It's interesting that the phrase 'weapon of mass destruction" is now being used to include the assault rifle. Last I checked . weapons of mass destruction where likened to nuclear, bio, chemical, etc. I feel including a semi-automatic weapon in the same category is taking poetic license to the the extreme. Let's keep the facts straight and have a sensible debate.
I found Christine to be a pompous piece of work with a skewed reporting style, having to be part of a team that had to provide security for her when she graced us with her presence in Baghdad...we always hated having to risk our lives to provide protection for these hormone driven reporters...luckily we never saw Piers in Iraq.
For the last several weeks Piers has had self defense advocates on the show purportedly to have a discussion. The latest was the supposed town hall where John Lott was the token pro-gun person. Consistently in each and every one of these shows, when a pro gun person cites facts or statistics, Piers calls them a liar. This is becoming very annoying.
Consider John Lott's statement that following the 1997 gun ban in England murder and violent crime went up. Piers said "I'm sorry, but that's just a complete lie. It's a complete lie. The gun murder rate in Britain is 35 a year, average. You need to stop repeating a blatant lie, about what happens in other countries. . . . You lied about it the other day. "
The problem with that is, it isn't a lie. from 1997 to 2003 the number of homicides in England and Wales went from 700 a year to 1050 a year (not 35). If that isn't a huge change, I don't know what is. Since 2003, the rate has fallen substantially, but it's hard to use the 1997 gun ban for changes that occurred after 2003.
Other violent crimes followed a similar path with the Home Secretaries annual report in 1020 showing that in the period from 1997 to 2003 violent crimes went from around 100,000 a year to 700,000 a year. They've since fallen back again – to around 200,000, but that's again hard to justify the 1997 ban as a cause of the 2003-2010 fall.
The change in murder rates in Ireland and Jamaica following their gun bans are even more dramatic, with no post-2003 fall. see the graphs at http://bit.ly/V96KKe
The effect of the gun ban in Chicago is even more interesting http://bit.ly/V96R8x Note how prior to the ban, murder rates were falling... and after went up dramatically.
Correlation does not prove cause and effect, but to date, neither Piers, nor any other commentator can offer an example of a place where gun bans REDUCED violent crime. England has the highest rate of violent crime of any first-world nation, higher than the U.S. rate. It's difficult if not impossible to prove that the idea that a home owner might be armed dissuades American criminals from home invasions, but the relationship is certainly suggestive. It would be interesting to hear Piers comment on those real numbers and trends rather than calling every pro-gun person he has on the show a liar.
PIERS MORGAN: the 2nd amended was formed when guns took 20 minutes to reload so that is all an individual should own like one rifle per house under lock and key for hunting if someone wants to own a gun and be held accountable. NOT AUTOMATIC MACHINE ASSAULT WEAPONS TO KILL CHILDREN.
ALL OTHER GUNS SHOULD BE RETURNED AND DESTROYED.
WAKE UP AMERICA and the NRA should STOP THEIR ASSAULT ON KILLING CHILDREN with THESE GUNS as today people are more DERANGED than EVER BEFORE.
John, don't be so naive. Your are showing your ignorance. You could load a musket in less than 1 minute back when the 2nd amendment was signed in to law, not 20 minutes. These were the most modern weapons of their time. Both civilans and our standing army all used the same type of weapons. Imagine what the outcome would be if the people fighting the oppressive government of syria were using bolt action hunting rifles to fight Assad's Army! If a militia is going to be any kind of a deterent against TYRRANY, it has to be relevant!! If you are going to use the 2nd ammendment for an argument at least have a little bit of knowledge of the subject.
John – look at your argument. You have actually identified the root cause - 'today people are more DERANGED than EVER BEFORE". Let's work on getting this issue resolved. Addressing the root cause of an issue typically resolves anciallary effects.
My only problem with Piers Morgan is that EVER since he became the host, he has wanted to discuss gun control and he exploits the issue to talk about gun control EVERY TIME. I saw him literally salivating when THIS happened to the children because he KNEW then he had a RIGHT to be rude and disrespectful to anyone who disagrees with his view. He has NO right to talk about America because this is NOT his home. BUT, he keeps comparing the murder rate in the USA with Britain and Australia. WELL.. It IS higher here NO MATTER. Even when you adjust the math per capita. HOWEVER.. You truly CANNOT compare America to Britain because there is a HUGE difference in land mass and population. HELL.. Britain just barely fits in Texas.. And Australia.. Though almost the same land mass as contiguous states, has only approx. 23 million and the US has approx. 315 million. So you can NOT compare this. OH, you can do hypothetical calculations and approximations, but it's impossible to compare the 3. IMPOSSIBLE. And it sounds good Piers THINKS.. But IT’S INCORRECT. THESE ARE THE FACTS: that violent crime in the UK had increased from 652,974 offences in 1998 to more than 1.15 million crimes in 2007.
It means there are over 2,000 crimes recorded per 100,000 population in the UK, making it the most violent place in Europe.
Austria is second, with a rate of 1,677 per 100,000 people, followed by Sweden, Belgium, Finland and Holland.
By comparison, America has an estimated rate of 466 violent crimes per 100,000 population.
Website for article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/5712573/UK-is-violent-crime-capital-of-Europe.html NOTE: THIS IS FROM 2007 and crime is down 10% in England... since then, BUT these are the FACTS with the USA back then......and England STILL has a higher crime rate then USA!!!
A mad man does not destroy evidence on the computer, plan an assault on a school. We need to look deep into this story in its entirety. We have people spreading propaganda about the government want to take away their second ammendment rights, please do not forget, these young people are listening to all of this nonsense. Alot of negativity is out there, hatred is like a virus. We need to address the issue about guns, the assault weapons which are use in war zones. Stop trying to cover up the most important issue GUNS with mental illness. Mental illness is another issue. Mental illness minus guns equal safety. Mental illness plus equal mass murders.
I also post under the name Cat. Although i didn't write the above comment, i certainly agree with it. Why must a mentally unstable person have to commit a crime before healthcare is given? Just like any responsible gun owner should have no qualms about insuring public safety. We, as a society, should have no qualms about insuring that those with mental health issues can get the help they need. Have we become so selfish that we only care about protecting and doing for our own? It's in our best interest to address both issues. It affects us all.
@Randy....Yes "weapons of mass destruction" has been used to describe nuclear, bio or chemical weapons in the past. I would consider the murder of 20 children "massive" and very "destructive". Therefore, i feel, using those words to describe that particular weapon is appropriate.
We in United States are quite ignorant. Our values have become quite warped and double standard, our media is very controlled and not free just like our goverment. What message are we sending our children? We Molly coddle our kids and the scoiety has no respect, we blame our teachers and school. The therapist blame the parents. The truth is have become a society of BLAMERS because we dont take any responsibility of our ourself.
What you never heard of Jim Jones, Timothy McVeigh, They had no guns and killed many more people. This kid could of just as easy filled milk jugs with gas and oil and took a sledge hammer to the front door and might of caused more mayham. How about the mall shooter. He could of most likley had a higher death toll just by using his car to run over people in the parking lot. Take every gun away and murder will continue as it did before the gun's invention.
I am a regular viewer of Piers Morgan, and I watched the show last night concerning assault weapons ban. I was somewhat surprised that Piers was exceptionally rude to several of his guests that did not necessarily agree with his views and agenda. For what ever reason, Piers seems to have an anger problem with the AR-15 specifically. I am a retired police officer and am familiar with many types of firearms. The actual truth is that the AR-15 is no different in the rate of fire than semiautomatic pistols, rifles for deer hunting, or semi automatic shotguns for duck hunting. The fact that it looks like a military m16, has a lot of people thinking it is a fully automatic rifle, which it is not. A shooter must pull the trigger each time the gun fires. A military m16 will fire automatically about 600-650 rounds a minute with one pull of the trigger. A trained shooter using a AR-15 will be lucky to be able to fire 3 rounds a second, the same rate of fire for the hunting and target shooting firearms mentioned above. No difference in rate of fire, the AR-15 just looks like a military assault rifle. A beretta 92 FS semiautomatic 9mm pistol with a 15 round magazine will be as deadly with the same rate of fire. Guns contribute to violence, but so does mental health issues, our culture where young people are desensitized with violent movies as well as violent games. We need to focus on all of the problems and not just settle to demonize the AR-15 because it looks like a military assault rifle. I guess that all of the out cry against the one rifle makes people feel better simiiar to many of the feel good laws that Congress passes that has no real purpose or effect.
L.Smith, I agree with you on most of your comments. I am a 26 year veteran of our armed services. I shot expert with the beretta 92 FS (M-9) as well as the M-16 (M-4) on multiple annual/biannual weapons qualifications. In addition I own a Bushmaster AR-15. The Bushmaster Owners Manual shows the maximum effective rate of fire as 45 rounds per minute. Unless you have done major modifications to the weapon, you will be hard pressed to get 3 rounds per second, and even if you did, you would not be very accurate. That is why the M-4 went to the three round burst vs. the M-16's full auto fire. Piers Morgan was beating hiw own agenda drum with absolute false hoods that an AR-15 is capable of shooting 4-6 rounds per second, or over 4000 rounds per minute..........Piers Morgan, You are the LIAR!!!! or grossly uneducated on the facts. Don't get me wrong, that idiot that killed all those kids and adults had over 10 minutes to accomplish his mahem. But with that much time and those very innocent children that had no way to be protected it would not have mattered what kind of weapon he was using
Does the US 2nd ammendment place any limit on what type of arms the citizenry can bear? It seems that assault weapons are ok but what about things like grenades, flamethrowers, bazookas, etc.?
It couldn't include the weapons in question, they weren't invented yet. And all the above mentioned weapons are weapons of war. Not weapons of protection or sport.
The second amendment says "Keep and bear arms" it doesn't say what kind of arms. It also doesn't say "hunting and sporting purposes" During the revolutionary war, MOST of the artillery used by the American forces were privately owned canon.
Bazookas and flame throwers come under the heading of "any other weapon" under federal law, and you certainly are allowed to own them under the 1935 gun control act. You have to pay a $200 tax and be certified by the feds and approved for the purchase by your local law enforcement officials. Some states allow that sort of thing, others don't.
There certainly are MANY cannon and such in private hands in the U.S. The legality of owning it is a state by state thing.
Back during the time of the 2nd amendment, the citizens were armed with the same weapons that the government/military had. It was on equal terms.
Now the government wants to disarm it citizens, at least these weapons for now, they will come for the rest later. Examples: see the Great Britain and Australia. Started with one type then went after the others.
You will never win a fight with evil by disarming the good.
Look Simply put I watched this last night and he can go back to britan and CNN shouldfire him WHAT A BULLY!!!! Whatever his attempt was to argue for... his brief attempt at apolgy was CRAP! That whole thing was filled with victoms to try to sway his view and distorted facts and politcal ambiguaty...and darn near the entire panel was from another country... look when they have their econ in order etc... Then they can talk to me untill then... get off my TV and go back to your hole.... IF he is a journalest then he needs to be a non BIASED journalist... if not then get off a news channel the farce rich fake that I am guessing has his own entourage of protection... IF JImmy the greak had done something like this back in the eighties he would be fired.... Today he gets to keep his money his job and his contract.... CRAP CRAP CRAP... and CNN should be ashamed of this... !!! As well as anyother station that may be doing the same but so far he is the worst... even when the CNN contributor tried to speak he was a BULLY..... GET RID OF HIM CNN no rating is worth that GARBAGE....
Murder of 11 month baby Omar makes me sick on YouTube
Mark McGowan is not afraid of telling the world about baby Omar. Did CNN report baby Omar's murder?
Is this a crime to post it? Am I breaking CNN house rules?
Mike, the government does not want to disarm its citizens, this is all propaganda, America is becoming a WAR ZONE, why guns? we are rearing terriorists in this country. We are trying disarms terriorsts in other countries and we are reluctant to get guns out of the hands of ruthless and cold blooded killers and murderers.
Safety: We need to wake up and we need to become honest first. Our country has killed over one million people in Iraq yet Bush has not been tried for war crimes. We did not see Mr Morgan or Anderson Cooper cover the stories of new borns babies killed we did not see the carnage of baby nursery and we saw no funurals of Iraqis or of our men and women in uniform who were lied to. As we weep for the tragic loss at Sandy Hook school let us reflect what we are doing to other people's children and Mr Morgan is not getting upset or angery why?
As we all weep for the lives lost in this tragedie at Sandy Hook Elementry School lets us all reflect what going on in other parts of the world to children just like our own very own in United States. We are a sick country we are sending our children double standard.
" In the US, mass child killings are tragedies. In Pakistan, mere bug splats"
Barack Obama's tears for the children of Newtown are in stark contrast to his silence over the children murdered by his drones.
The United States is responsible for the biggest proliferation of weapons in the world. They are not disarming terrorists, they are just choosing which terrorists they want to arm.
We are wasting our time trying to convince the ignominious (sheep) who are gun wing nuts
and some of them condemn England, what about your war criminal Bush
You have a armed militia, it`s called the US army
more mental health talk, less gun control talk
more facts, less Morgan
more dialogue, less Morgan
why is this guy on the air, CNN has lost it and Fox found it
we need Piers Morgan contol, he is the ph in phony
Our therapist are not well trained. They blame parents for there mental sick child. The parents become the scape goat yet the gravy bowl get deeper and our society is getting sicker. We need to become respectful, teach our children to be respectful and stop our double standard. Therapist are quick to tell " break contact with Toxic people." What they forget the person seeing Threapiest is there because they need help. We need more group councling with family members. This is something Threapiest fear and not trained. Mr Morgan how about addressing this issue ?
Read ALL of the comments and concerns.......Great Points on both sides.....but one question....
"What is the most dangerous weapon in the world??"
Can anyone answer this question?
I bet Piers Morgan can't......
And I bet 75 to 80 percent of America can't........
Everyone knows it is the automoblie
Good reply......but.....sadly you are....Wrong......try again......
Well then either food or the AK47
Well those are good answers too......but sad to say.....wrong again......just wanted to put my 2 cent question in to see anyone would bite..... and get it right....guess not.....but the answer to the question is......
The Human Mind......
You cannot predict it....see it...hear it....taste nor smell it of what it would do next.
Nobody can read minds.
Your answer of the automobile is good but unfortunately it holds one of the highest
death tolls in America and along with heart desease, obesity, drug use......
Nobody is forcing anyboy to eat a big mac or whopper with cheese......
like in the state of Washington......really....legalize pot......hope your job...company...business doesn't
find out through drug testing....think of the Safety Risks......liable if you cause harm or even
death to a co-worker or even property damage you may have to pay for...and get fired.......
or goto jail. What about the feelings of the family of the victim knowing some individual was high and
said it was legal.....?
As usual....alot of people around the world blame others or other things for their downfalls or short
comings.....its like "Can't see the forrest because of the trees"......
But it is ok in America to have at least 3 chances to kill or murder someone or some family by using a
automobile under the influence of alcohol, drugs or whatever.....maybe more chances if you have a Damn Good Lawyer....get my point....???
Don't blame the government or Inanimate objects or others for things that happen or have happened
...we have our own free will to do things.....we are the only species that can really reason through mind process...
IT IS YOUR CHOICE to do things....Piers doesnt see it that way...He wants to be Saint.......
Or try to be.......by blaming others or things.......
All I can say is that....."Becareful what you (the people of this country) ask for ...you just might get it.
What may be good for the goose... might not be good for the gander......
Believe me...I've been to combat 3 times for this Great Country.....Somalia (1993, remember that??)
Iraq (2003-2005)...Iraq for a second time (2008-2009).
I've seen my fair share of violence and killings...needless killings.....Military and Government in control
of the Nation that they are suppose to lead.....but...hey...if you aren't in a high position of status or power...
you are nothing.......
Not trying to disrespect you in anyway or for.....just food for thought......
Really Dr. Questins, a hit on legalizing pot? Are you saying that while you suck down a cigarette, and drink that six pack of beer? LOL
The Humain tongue is the worst wepon on earth. The lies takes us in to wars bring in God and Country.
Does this make George Bush as the most dangerous person in the world? His lies had killed millions of people in the world. Ruined our economy and lied to our young men and woman in uniform.
I rather appreciate Piers' unrelenting attack on the gun advocates. Go piers!. However I realize there is no getting around the exisitance of guns in this country. I feel the licensing and ongoing yearly renewal of these licenses would allow gun owners rights, while allowing a civil society to say no to those who have issues potentiating bad bahavior with a gun. I am aware of individuals who are gun ownrre with altogether to many guns in their posession, but more importantly are old enough to have lost their physical and or mental prowess to safely be trusted with these weapons. We take away driving priveldges when it is no longer in the public interest to allowcertain individuals to drive, seems the right thing for gun permits as well.
I haven't heard Pierce Morgan say anything about the dozens families and women and children killed everyday by U.S. Drones in places like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq? Second, we all know how to stop kooks with guns, since they ALWAYS target gun-free zones. Third, we have the 2nd Amendment to ward off government and it's the same mindset that allowed my ancestors to drive his ancestors out of America and back to England
Thank you Tim.
Surely you have the same ancestors, most of the founding fathers were from English heritage...you may even be related to Mr Morgan!
Piers has shown us how NOT to have a discussion on gun control or anything else for that matter. A discussion by its very nature requires the respect (if not the agreement), of the partners involved. Mr Morgan may be emotionally charged, (as many of us are), by the incredulity of the Newtown shooting however that does not give him the right to abuse, dismiss, and verbally assault other individuals involved in the discussion. We have talked over and over again about the lethal consequences of bullying in our societies and yet here is Mr Morgan behaving and speaking like an outraged bully. We spend so much time trying to watch our references to others, to avoid calling people idiots etc., and here we have a man with a wide audience behaving in a manner which is so disrespectful. Mr Morgan has a right to be outraged by Newtown, (and other heinous killings). He does not have a right to interrupt others, act like a senior bully in a school yard brawl, or generally be utterly dismissive of others views. He may be on a personal mission but it reeks of self serving grandiosity. CNN should have cut the program from the air.
Selfserving grandiosity maybe true.... unfortunately most reporters and leaders don't challang NRA. Mr Morgan may have gone over the top but he has brought the silent majority to the table and that's a good things. We don't need assault weapons in homes.
Trust in God not Guns.
Maya, I agree with your comment in principle. The problem is that yes, you can bring people to the table by harassing and bullying them but to KEEP them at the table you have to conduct yourself with the same self control you are advocating for others. Getting change enacted requires a discussion which allows for every voice to be heard. I have no doubt in my mind that Obama has the will and the capacity to get a lot of these long guns off the streets and the NRA (silent if you notice), will have to change to comply with changes to federal law. I can assure you not one of the NRA is going to comply with Piers Morgan ranting at them.
God doesnt know anything about protecting the innocent, nor does "god" exist keep lying to yourself to mitigate your fear, the rest of us will live in reality
i could not agree more. piers' behavior is insulting and disrespectful the past several nights. he sets up the guest with the "wrong" answers to be his whipping dog. he is showing the self-serving bullying behavior which is part of the problem in our culture.
then, deepak chopra, guru of love and compassion, chimed in, calling into question the disagreeing man"s sanity. lost all respect for chopra right there.
I could not believe what I was hearing. Morgan, it's time for you to leave and go back to England.
Piers, you're nothing more than a slimeball "Brit" and don't understand that native born Americans were born with certain rights, one of which is their right to bear arms. I watched your show for the first time last night and you are a rude person and IMHO not a very professional news commentator. I hope CNN ships you back to the U.K. via the Mayflower. Your anti-gun agenda has become personal and it shows everytime you open your slimey mouth. You'd never, ever see Cooper Anderson or Erin Burnett lowering themselves to your rude, unprofessional conduct.
Cody R, may I correct you ? "native born" Americans were largely wiped out by the immigrants who shot them to gain their land. The obsession with guns started early.
Now the guns made in America end up in countries like Mexico with catastrophic consequenes. The clamour for drugs in America fuels carnage elsewhere.
Look around the big world outside and see how other countries control gun ownership and usage.
Perhaps America could learn something. Perhaps the NRA might cease to be the intimidating, lobbying outfit and return to teaching gun owners to behave responsibly.
Piers, quit spreading misinformation. You are starting to act like those conservatives that you always complain about. ARs are not military grade weapons. ARs are semi-auto rifle with a detching magazine that is molded to look like something that is on the battle field. It is really getting tiring correcting you with the basic facts. The rate of fire is less that someone firing a semi auto pistol, one pull one bang. Military grade is one with a selector switch that has one pull and many bangs. Is that simple enough for you to wrap you two brain cells around?
Amazing how people who are so pro guns, are so anti freedom of speech. Piers is getting attacked for his opinion, amazing how pro gun people are so anti first amendment.
Piers, Please get back to news and objective interviewing. No matter what side of the gun debate one is on, I would think your viewers want an objective, investigative discussion with your guests so they can make up their own mind. What we end up with is one big editorial night after night. I suppose that drives ratings which is the name of the game. Entertainment, not news. FOX is making money with that approach and CNN news is struggling, so I guess I can't blame you. I'm just tired of hearing it night after night.
I actually applaud Piers wholeheartedly for his passion about gun control. I agree with his level of frustration 100 percent and I am thankful that he is passionate about exposing the issue of making serious strides towards gun control. I am not a gun owner and do not believe in having a gun in my household particularly with small children. However, I am not opposed to others owning handguns in their homes. But a layperson having a semiautomatic rifle pushes the limit for me. Piers – continue on with that passion!!!
You just don't get ii.
I think it is time for responsible gun ownership. I was a Marine for two tours with one a combat tour. Every time I needed my weapon I checked it out of an amory except for the combat tours. It is an oppertunity for many if the concept of community armories were to take hold. people could still keep their pistols and hunting guns at home, but any assult type rifle would be required to be checked into a local armory. A local armory could either be public or private and would be the sole point for sales for these types of ammunition and storage. Thereafter if I were to check out my rifle the local authorities would know on a singlee data base. I respect and believe in gun ownership, but the people that don't own or embrace gun ownership have the right to believe that they are safe in their environment. It is time for a comprimise on this. The business oppertunity is immense. the educational oppertunity is there. Gun clubs could emerg, shooting ranges and so forth. I do not own an assult type rifle, but would if i had a safe place to keep it and use it for recreation.
I'm sure the criminals will oblige you and check there guns into the community armory too.
No simple snide remarks please. Like all changes things take time to impliment. Now lets take a more detailed look at some of the mass shootings. The woman that was killed in Conn. was killed by her son, then he went over to a school and killed teachers and children. The mother of Adam Lanza likely disd not prevent her son from accessing assault type rifles. Had she properly locked the rifles and stored them she would be with us today, and so would the teachers and children. A step further is the other students like Columbine where teenage citizens had accessed assault type rifles and killed other students. None of these people were criminals like you state. They are now. Their parents who owned the weapons never prevented them from accesing them. Most people are lazy about this issue of how to properly store a weapon. It is not until we have severe consequences that we take action. A three year old was recently killed in a home in Oklahoma by a self inflicted gunshot. The parents in disbelief about how the child got ahold of the gun. I know! it wasn't locked up, again irresponsible ownership. Now please stop drumming up the boogie man, people here in Oklahoma enjoy open carry, which I support. I think at best assault type rifles are recreational and should be regulated. I think hunting rifles and pistols should be maintained by citizens, but assualt rifles. Get real. Rights belong to everybody. You and I have the right to own a gun, but people who dont own guns have the right to be assured thier neighbor is a responsible owner and their neiborhs child wont have access to an assult rifle. No my example is real becuse it happened, Your is a bit worn out criminals with assault rifles will be weeded out if we were to move to a community based armory for assault rifles being housed there. I am not supporting banning guns, I am a proponent of responsible ownership. Most people who have assault rifles don't have propper training they just have enough money to buty one.
It is interesting that everyone says they are so concerned about the kids. But when I bring up the fact that approximately 1500 children are killed in car accidents each year I seem to stir up a firestorm when I declare that we should ban automobiles. Why is that? Is it because no one wants their right to own a car taken away? It is funny how people want to pick and choose who gets which rights. Let's say that we put "assault weapons" in an armory or ban them altogether, what happens when a kid picks up his parents semi-automatic handgun and goes into a school and kills a bunch of kids? Will we then need to ban all semi-automatic weapons? In Australia they banned ALL weapons and violent crime with knives increased. Now Australia is trying to regulate knives. Where does it end? When we are all sitting in a padded room with our sporks? I would propose to you that guns are not the problem at all. They are only one of many tools that could be used. Our government is responsible for the biggest proliferation of weapons in the world, I hardly think that they are the ones that should be telling us whether we should have guns or not.
Back to the basics, Driving is a priviledge, not a right. You have to apply for a liscence and display that you can operate a vehicle properly. In public if you operate one it is regulated by the police and courts. Every year I have to pay a fee to regeister it and to operate one on the roadways we all enjoy. People that are convicted of crimes in autoobiles involving the death of children go to court are convicted and serve time and pay fines. Further people don't take thier automobile to the local school and killfellow citizens. Be responsible with your comments. Once people agree we have a problem with assault rifles we can move forward to logical debate. It is like denial in addiction, until you ackknowledge the problem it holds one captive until it is admitted. Assault rifles outside the military are recreational and need to be regulated, not banned. And yes if a child obtains a semi-automatic pistol in a parents home it would be bad. At the core of this is responsible ownership. If you are a responsible owner the semiautomatic pistol is locked up and the child never has the oppertunity to pick it up. Your right guns are not the problem. People acting irresponsible are and because no one will take responsibility it should be regulated. It is an oppertunity for the NRA to increase membership and propose a responsible gun ownership agenda nationwide.
jrho is not very smart. The anti gun laws that Hitler implemented, were so JEWS could not own guns. Also Germans DID have guns, so why didn't they rise up and stop Hitler with those guns?
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun! Amen. You idiots that think banning guns will work are living in a damn fantasy world...Utopia huh sounds great but it will not work. Why bc there is no such thing. Evil will always exist. I will never get used to evil but facts are facts and if evil comes at me with a gun Evil will be met with a gun. No One will take my guns! No one! You say no one wants your guns. I say it is coming The idiots want get their foot in the door. Ban one type today another tomorrow and then all guns the next day. It's a global agenda. America you better wake up! Calling 911 will not save you. You better save yourself. I know I will. Piers you are a total idiot! One question to your pansy British ass...Please answer this Do you have armed security?
I like Piers before all this happen, the Piers that I so the last two days is not the ONE I form a professional opinion as a CNN Host, I so the look in the face of Cristiana Amampour and after the first round she step done the panel. That give me a clear message than even his co worker don't agree with his BULLY practices. We already have problems as Americans with
Bullies and we don't want an american wan to be, to Bully our selfs in our own home. CNN is the best news network having Piers in prime time with worldwide audience to represent America and CNN like BULLY is somenthing we don't need, we already have our own Bullies to deal with,,,Dear Piers go back to London the only problem is that if you go back phone hacking is off. and Mr: Mudock may don't want you back. That means you should try THE Australian dis joke radio station it is an opening theare that may feet your new Bully Style/profile. WHERE ARE YOU LARRY KING???
It is amazing to see how many "pro-choice" or (pro-death) advocates like Piers Morgan are suddenly pretending to care about the lives of children or human life in general, for that matter. This is rich.
On a side note, when I told CNN that they were the Communist New Network for their lopsided coverage of gun control, I promptly got a letting on facebook from Adam Bevill calling me a moron and then all of my comments (about a dozen) were deleted from this article. Thanks for proving my point, comrade. (check back in a couple of days and see if these comments aren't deleted as well) :)
It is a sad truth that you and your like minded people resort to calling anyone who expresses views you do not agree with "communists" or "socialists". A pathetic and cowardly attempt to smear with your toxic jibes.
Your failure to discuss serious issues illustrates the emptiness of your thoughts.
The NRA takes a week to say we need more guns !
The rest of the world looks on with incredulity. If this is democracy at work, please don't try exporting it to Iraq, Afghanistan and any other countries invaded in the name of trying to be the global policeman.
I believe access to military grade assualt weapons should be tightly controlled, possibly banned.
Piers Morgan prompts me to disavow that view: I should not wish to be associated with him.
I believe in the need for a wide-ranging debate of the issues raised by Newtown and other tragedies.
Piers Morgan has shown himself to lack the self-discipline, respect and professionalism to qualify as a serious participant in such debates.
I am British.
I feel compelled to apologize for Piers Morgan. He is as much an embarrassment to me as he is surely an irritant to Americans.
Piers was wrong when he brought up the AR15 rate of fire. He claimed 4 shots a second, 100 rounds a minute. That may be correct for the military M16A1, but the AR15 is a semi-automatic weapon...1 shot per trigger squeeze.
The correct answer would be however fast someone can squeeze the trigger. Which is true of every semi automatic rifle and pistol out their.
It only shows that Piers has no idea what he is talking about.
I do not want to enter the food fight but...
For a complete list of state and federal elected officials who have received campaign contributions from the gun lobby go to:
http://www.opensecrets.org and click the influence and lobbying tab.
I havejust one comment i would like to ask Piers Morgan one question why has nobody blamed the parents for having these wepons in the house Also where in the world could a boy that age by shuch vile wepon , as a x G.I. in the inf.I know what them wepons can do
Edward Johnston ( I blame the parents)
I just watched part of Piers Morgan interviewing a group of people about assault rifles. I was shocked. Piers Morgan is not a journalist, he is a lobbyist. He had an agenda nothing was going to stand in his way on getting it out. He was out right rude to the pro gun expert. He would not let him answer or even talk. I will never again listen to Piers Morgan and will turn the channel when he comes on. I want the news. I want a balanced debate. I do not need to listen to a bigoted lobbyist.
As I understand it, Nobody is saying more guns. They are saying do away with the gun free zones so that responsible people with the proper licenses can carry their defense weapons in places like movie theatres and malls. Gun free zones only offer easy targets for the disturbed people who do these things like Newtown, Aurora, Portland etc. And these responsible gun owners aren't packing Ar15s anyway. So Piers when you are screaming "How are more guns the answer" well you are sensationalizing your own opinions and the opinions of your peers. (most of whom are from your own country or your colonies..eh hem..) I understand just how terrible these events are, and I agree that something needs to be done. I would like to point out that you say more guns aren't the solution, and I would hate to see it happen here...BUT...when you get off the plane at Heathrow airport there are soldier like law enforcements units armed with MP5 sub machine guns...TO PREVENT ALL OF THE TYPE OF THINGS WE ARE TRYING TO TALK ABOUT!!! I personaly would prefer the redneck next to me have a defense pistol instead of storm troopers every where. But that is just me. With that...I also think the guy representing the pro gun side...is kind of weired. The only thing worse than his eyebrows are the non citizen Europeans trying to tell ME to be more like THEM. Telling us that we should live by their laws. When there are plenty of Americans out their who have given their lives, so that we are free of their laws, we make our own....right?????
Fire Piers Morgan now!!! Send him back to England. He won't let a person respond to his stupid questions. Semi-automatic means every time you pull the trigger you fire one round, not like he states. He's a TOTAL IDIOT!!!
While I think assault rifles should be banned also Piers Morgan is a serious disrespectful idiot that always cuts off his guests if he doesn't like what they have to say or he cannot control the conversation. People need to get together and have this egotistical idiot removed from cnn . To think this idiot is the one who replaces Larry Kings show.... CNN seriously you really think this guy helps your ratings?
How is it possible that the NRA – with ~4 million members – has so much power? We waited for their press release as if they were the Supreme Court. Seems they gone from teaching markmanship, gun safety and promoting firearms sportsmanship to being the talking heads for the merchants of death with – so much cash in the bank they can determine the outcome of elections.
With regards to this: "Say you have a provocative opinion about something. And say you want the liberty to express that opinion. And say someone in your little audience has the legal right to stand there fondling an assault weapon. And say he has a mentality like Timothy McVeigh's."
Please bear in mind that Timothy McVeigh did not use a gun to commit mayhem. He used fertilizer and a Ford Econoline van. Should we ban those now? And with those items, he killed more people all at once than any mass shooter has. Should we ban Econoline vans?
If you look up Gary Ridgway, you'll see that he killed 49 people with nothing more than his own arm (as in the ones hanging from his shoulders, not firearms) or a ligature. He strangled his victims to death. Shall we ban those too?
Ted Bundy also never shot anyone either. Jeffrey Dahmer – same thing. Killers are going to be killers. They will find other means to kill people. Taking any form of gun away reduces a person's chance to defend themselves against crazies like these people.
Also – England may not be as safe as some people think it is. Somewhere recently I heard that English police are known to refuse to accept reports of violent crime because that way, their crime stats stay very low. So English police could be lying to the world about what's really going on in their country. I for one would like to find out more about this.
By the way, do most of the people commenting here realize that "ar" does not stand for "assault rifle?" It stands for the name of the gun manufacturer – ARmalite. Come on, people.
One writer made this statement about the "conversation" about gun control – it's not a "conversation" at all. It's a LECTURE. People like Piers simply want to LECTURE pro-2nd Amendment folks about how they should run their lives. As soon as one says, "Oh no, we should never allow guns in a school, even in the hands of teachers or administrators or security," then this is NOT a "conversation" by definition. It is a LECTURE. Think about that. Hey Piers, are you listening??? I bet you're NOT.
I'm from Australia, and we are known to have the toughest gun laws in the world. If I'm not mistaken, only around 5% of Australia own a gun. Whilst we do get reports of shootings, they are minimal compared to other countries, let alone the US. Whilst I do realize our population is much smaller than many other countries, the ratio of gun deaths is much smaller than other countries. For example, in 2010, there were 231 deaths by firearms in Australia. That is a 0.0000125% death rate by firearms. And if you look at the decrease of deaths by firearms since bans were introduced, it has decreased.
Some here say Morgan is overbearing and not letting his guests talk and I would agree with you there to a certain extend as it can sometimes be annoying however on this particular subject and issues I believe he is trying to make people understand and at least try to stop having this violent mentality in their heads as there is far too much violence in America increasing the amount of guns in america is ridiculous.
Trying to at least make an effort for change would be of a great start, banning all weapons and leaving it to just the Military and the Police would be fantastic taking weapons away from criminals as much as to the civilian sounds like a good idea. The only reason people say its not going to work is because they don't want it to work they don't want to get rid of there guns because they believe that holding a weapon in their hands will protect them from the criminally minded, when you take away guns from everyone that includes the criminals themselves not just the few, not just the selected then this would be wouldn't this be great. The Military, Police and Government Officials should only have it corrupted government officials should be weeded out an new changes in government also should also be changed.
I would at least try to make an effort to make some sort of changes to reduce the amount of access to weapons that people have in america wouldn't you, guns should be a privilege to have nothing more than that, guns were only designed from the very beginning of human history to kill it is a weapon of destruction not a weapon of peace else it wouldn't of been invented in the first place would it. If humans wanted peace in the beginning they wouldn't of needed to create such weapons of any sort in the beginning.
Gun Control of some sort is needed and should not be otherwise, try to at least make some effort to help the people of america to come to grips that violence doesn't solve everything, peace is the main objective here an to stop the mass killing of innocent children as the children is your future because without them there is none, more guns is absurd.
A smaller clip could be changed and the gun would be firing again in about 2 seconds. The one and only thing to consider banning the AR-15 for and letting other guns stay is looks as this could have happened with just one of the two pistols the shooter had or a number of regular rifles. To me it looks like the purchase proof vests and guns merits the most
attention. Last but not least what can these guys do to make it even more obvious the attention they get from doing these terrible things is also a big part of the problem.? Or we going to leave that alone and merely make them go down a notch on the weapon?
I posted previously and apparently it was deleted. Is that possible? (mild stuff, compared to some of the other posts, just about Ted Turner and him giving a BILLION $ to the UN). Anyway, it just occurred to me that "GUN CONTROL WORKS" is the new BIG LIE. Remember the German's before WWII? They used it well. We keep hearing it: "Something must happen". Guess what that "something" is. GUN CONTROL. Well PLEASE have a little look at the literature (the REAL literature – John Lott, Dave Kopel, etc.) And, there is even a new Harvard Study about it as well. The gist of it is: GUN CONTROL DOES NOT WORK. PERIOD. END OF SENTENCE.
Please God, don't let the same thing happen here as happened in the UK and Australia. (By the way, do a little research as to what is REALLY happening in those countries, and don't just take CNN's word for it).
Piers You are absolutely right !!!!!!!!
People who whant to deport you just proof your point
They get angry when you questioning , puting in to discoution use of mashin guns aka sloatermashins
They are afraid abouth the beloved second amandmanth in the mid time They don't anderstand the FIRST AMANDMENT
Ask your self question :
How The Perfect World would look like :
A. Everybody has a gun . I mean EVERYBODY '
You can cary loaded gun everywhere at any time
B. Nobody is shooting at anything
If you answer is A :
we already went thru this . some time ago
it did't work
Agreed! If everybody has a gun, you live in fear of others. If nobody had guns, an element of that fear is taken away.
Hahaha. This the dumbest phrase I have heard all day. An m16 machine gun? That's like saying a butter knife machete. The interviewee has been to war zones. Ok. So she is speaking as an expert on objects she's seen used by other people from a distance? I've planes fly past. That doesn't make me an airframe mechanic. I AM a Marine veteran however who can tell you that an ar15 the closest civilian equivalent to an m16 is nothing even remotely like a machine gun. Also assault rifle is a silly term which has no bearing on how dangerous a firearm is. Yet another example of how people who know little to nothing about guns are trying to push legislation while ignoring the opinions of people who actually have technical knowledge of what they are talking about.
PLEASE! Rational people (I guess we all believe we're in that category). Do a little research into the ACTUAL situation in the world vis-a-vis gun control. Sometimes the GUN VIOLENCE figures bandied about by ignorant people don't tell the whole story. When Russia was the USSR it had a very low GUN rate of violence but a very high murder rate. Historically, countries that have had GUN REGISTRATION have often followed with GUN CONFISCATION. They also (I'm sure) thought IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE. Please open your mind to the possibility that your present COMMON SENSE ideas about gun control just might be in need of revision. there is a reason that Piers Morgan and Solidad O'brian did not let John Lott get a full sentence out. Would you expext anything less from an organization controled (owned) by Ted Turner (you know, the gentleman who gave a BILLION $ to the UN). I truly don't think that the American public wants to repeat the mistakes (with respect to gun control) that were made by the UK and Australia – after their own School Violence tragedys. PLEASE PLEASE just reflect a little bit on this situation. Thank you.
Piers Morgan is like the FRENCH journalists, arrogant, pompous, intolerant, disrespectful. Is this American journalism, I thought CNN was an American network, I must have been mistaken.
I so agree !! As a French person I have to say that Morgan would fit better in a French studio among likewise minded other French journalists who seem to be getting a kick out of humiliating those they don't agree with. Morgan, that day, you were a disgrace to American journalism which, in other times, used to seve as an example of fair, accurate, respectful, courteous debates. USED TO.
All this complaining about piers Morgan, what for.....? Seems like most of u on here just boast about how much u know about guns, how long it takes to reload and how many rounds it can fire, how about if no one had guns there would b less massacres, I don't see anyone running around with a butter knife killing 15 people or more, so can the gun lovers in denial just agree with what's really right and not act all macho cos u own a gun. Also there's always goin to b mentally Ill people but if u allow ur fellow citizens the ease of purchasing a firearm, this is the result, it's all so simple. Ban guns and enforce public safety, no weapons should even come into the public eye, this is where America needs to wake up!
Wrong as wrong could be. Most killing and especially mass killings would still happen without guns. Don't believe me? Would Columbine and the Aurora theater massacres have happened without guns? Yes. In BOTH cases, the police found that the killers had a stockpile of fully prepared homemade explosive devices. The Columbine guys had at least 30 homemade grenades ready. Read: these guys were fully prepared to kill lots of people without using guns, but you go ahead and keep holding the childish notion that gun laws are the way to prevent violent criminal acts.
Also, the reason people are boasting about there gun knowledge is to make the point that those who are calling for legislation seem to know less about guns than those who oppose it. If we are going to debate what to do about an object it's pretty important to establish whether or not you know anything about the subject. If you don't know a Damon thing about the item being discussed, then you have zero credibility in the discussion.
jrho and others, I respect you hold your views but the reasoning you put forward is empty and puerile.
If you cannot accept that keeping guns out of the hands of all those with mental health and anger management issues will reduce violent homicides, then clearly you will never accept that some form of control over allowing all citizens to acquire guns, assault weaponry etc is essential to a civilised society.
Much of the rest of the developed world, where different forms of gun control exist, look on with total bemusement at the hollow loony arguments being put forward by people wishing for no controls at all.
The NRA have exposed their interest is merely to allow as many citizens as possible to arm themselves with as many guns of all kinds as possible, ideally with minimal checks.
The USA homicides are on a scale that dwarfs any other developed country world wide., in many cases by a multiple of over 20. Are the NRA proud of that.
The NRA take a week to comment on this most recent massacre and then say we want more guns ! QED
Their not there* tablet input botched that. Thought I'd mention it lest someone try grammar checking me in lieu of stating a valid rebuttal.
My husband and I watch you almost nightly till the guns talk came about. I watched I believe the first one and you asked questions, but you didn't let the folks finish their answers unless it was something you wanted to hear. I know people who have guns and don't. The last thing anyone wants is for these terrible tragedies to happen. I honestly don't think taking guns out of the equation is going to help. Criminals seem to find a way to get what they want. I think it will be worse if laws are passed. Just my opinion. I don't own one, but my husband does. It is a glock and it is for protection. I do think our children need to be safe at school and guards is the only way I believe they will be. It would be nice if you could outlaw some of these weapons, but....it's not going to take them out of the equations and I do want my grandchildren safe however it has to be done! Please let the folks that you ask question finish their answers, it's only fair, and the only way you will know why they feel and think the way they do. Just saying!
Amen sister we did it in jacksonville fl and guess what no one is shooting up our schools
