READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
In response to Friday morning's public statement by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre – the first public remarks by the National Rifle Association since last week's shooting in Newtown, Conn. – this evening "Piers Morgan Tonight" invites Geoffrey Canada, president and CEO of the Harlem Children's Zone, to share his insight and reactions:
"That was the most irresponsible, and I think, hurtful response to an American tragedy that I have heard," said Canada, referencing LaPierre's suggestion of more firearms as an answer for the current epidemic of gun violence in the country. "He should be ashamed of himself to come and tell the American people 'I am not going to do anything reasonable – not one thing.'"
As the pro-gun lobby continues to laud the value of military grade weapons – the likes of which have been used in several recent mass killings – Canada voices his opposition:
"It is shameful because they can give you not one logical reason that an American citizen needs an assault weapon. Not one. They aren't good for hunting, they serve no purpose," says the 60-year-old social activist. "In the hands of someone really mentally ill, they can do damage that is inconceivable to us."
Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in this evening at 9 as Canada further explains the pressing need to address this issue through legislation, so as to better "protect our children."

The NRA must think The American People are stupid, issuing a statement like this.
You cannot legislate for a Madman with a gun, I know.
I would have thought The NRA could put something forward as a long term strategy.
Armed Guards might be a quick fix, but what about the future?
I think all the heavy duty firepower should be stored at well guarded and protected gun clubs or firing ranges.
Why would anybody need assault weapons in urban areas?
You can't fire them off in your back yard or garden.
If you want to play with serious firepower JOIN THE ARMED FORCES!
or as I suggested, keep them in secure and guarded places where you CAN fire them.
Pete, who will decide who needs what and who doesn't, you? Are you volunteering to take the position and responsibility? In these United States of America no one decides another persons' needs so let that one go.
I suggest we put you in a secure place so you can be safe!
That's why I am glad to be a Canadian, I don't have to be put in a container to feel safe. Too many guns in the States and you won't see me visiting in the future. Great suggestions: If you want to shoot those guns for the "fun" of it, go play in a secure area. Nobody "need" those military guns at home.
NRA really had a good laugh at the American people!
Steve, of course others decide our needs in America.... What do you think congress does everyday? You really think you have a say in why congress thinks is best for us?
I "need" to drive 120 mph. Does that means I should?
Is that so, Steve? So you believe it should be your right to own a fully automatic rifle? How about a fully automatic rifle with a grenade launcher? What about an anti-tank weapon? Weaponized drone?
I have sat down and watched over and over again, some brain roasted vet ,drug user or someone dissatisfied with their boss or co-workers,go on a rampage and when the smoke settles, you have sometimes up to a dozen persons dead.
Instead of dealing with the sale of these weapons, persons like the head honcho at the NRA,STILL insist on the freedom to carry those weapons.
How would both of you feel if your family members were victims of on of the previous attacks.Or,you leave home for work and while there you receive a phone call saying come home asap, there has been a tragedy.Guess what? Your family members were brutally murdered by some gun toting joker.
Yiu know what, you can only feel the pain if you are wearing the shoes.
All guns laws must be abolished, no background checks, no registrations, no permit's, not even sales tax, if you disagree, you are a traitor!
I fully agreed that something should be done about the violence in this country relating to guns as well, as video games. Also the movie industry. However, I also agree that we should look at violence in the home and drunken drivers. There are more children killed killed each year in these situations than by murders from strangers. So lets outlaw alcohol in this country because it destroys more children than all of these others situations combined.Wake up people consider the murder of unborn children by abortions.Think about the values we have taught our young people.Thats the real problem.
No discipline in the schools. No respect for others.Where are the parents?
The government can't solve this problem. They cause most problems. They can't even decide on a budget. How can agree on how to deal with this one..
Why would anybody need assault weapons in urban areas?
Gee, i don't know...perhaps because urban areas are prone to higher crime rates?
I understand your ignorance of certain military style weapons but please understand, they are no different than other popular hunting rifles other than their appearance. I have an AK47 and although it is considered a battlefield weapon it is also a superb hog gun due to the capacity. The power is not even that of a a 30.06 which is a very popular rifle. A Browning .338 Win Mag is a much more powerful weapon and is also a very common rifle. It too is a semi-auto like and AK or an AR-15. These "military looking" rifles are only popular because of marketing trends. Anyone with a 12 ga. shotgun with .00 buckshot could do terrible damage and this is a shotgun that has been around forever. Remember Columbine happened right in the middle of the last assault weapons ban. It made absolutely no difference. Those who would support more gun control should first examine our society and address the issues of failed morality ( i.e. no religion in schools, humanist teaching in colleges and the complete breakdown of discipline in the family unit). Until our society corrects its mistakes and puts us back on a foundation lost generations ago we will continue to disintegrate as a society. Gun control sounds like an easy answer but it is just an excuse for the liberal minded sect of our society to become further entranced by those who would make us believe that we cannot think for ourselves and discipline ourselves but that we need a higher plane of control (i.e the Federal Government) to socially engineer us to be what they would have us to be.
Greg from Texas, I'm sorry I wasn't sarcastic in my post. I was actually answering line 6 from Pete Smith's post. He asked why people even need guns in urban areas. My reply was meant to be sarcastic. Believe me, I understand the difference in firearms, and would love to drop a few hogs sometime!
Reply to Shawn_
Point understood Shawn. I have to tell you , the ferral hog population is terrible here and it is open season on them. When you come up on a group of 15-20 hogs at once I can't tell you what a difference it makes to have a 30 rd clip. otherwise you get one shot (with a bolt action) and they're gone...
gee, perhaps we could look to alternative methods of reducing gun crime in urban areas, before contemplating the absolute last resort of handing out guns to all as the solution. While looking at tightening the gun law, why dont we, the people, demand the businesses that profit most the urban areas they operate in, have a legal duty to reinvest a portion of their success in the most deprived urban areas, providing jobs, training, education, hospitals, sports, theatre, arts, community events, community officers. Perhaps just maybe, if they did, opportunities would increase, a sense of worth would increase, and crime, gun related or otherwise, might reduce.
..............and the police have assualt weapons. They cannot keep us all safe. We do what we have to do!!!
Well Shawn and Greg with such a ferrel hog problem in Texas why is it that the most famous Hog Hunters the Campbells of the American Hoggers show use repeating rifles that are basically old 1800s west technology ? The problem with guns in America has nothing to do with the numbers or the types available but that in many states you have private sales without restrictions in Parking Lots. People in America talk of Law Abiding citizens when indeed there is a minority of gun owners breaking laws of common sense. How does one manage to have the courage to sell a stranger from the internet a gun in a Mall Parking lot ? Until people can have an honest and frank conversation on what guns do to American society then you will remain a society that will never live up to the foundering father words in the declaration of independence that said Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That indeed should be the ideal that attracted and continues people to live in America from other places.
Pete, I agree with you as far as keeping these weapons out of urban areas. There really is no need for that. Living in a very rural area these weapons are fun to plink around with and shoot targets. The thing I can not stand about this entire "gun control" issue with Piers Morgan's show is that he never lets anyone defend their opinion or beliefs. He has got to be the most rude newscaster I have ever watched. He demands respect from his guests but gives them none. I hate to say it but people like him make me feel the exact opposite of what he is believing in. I am a gun enthusiast and I am also trained to be a safe gun owner. I can not say that about every American but Piers takes his opinion to a level that I can not even understand. I wish he would invite a true gun enthusiast on his show and for once just let them talk!!! Not to mention I own a .223 which has a wooden stock and looks like a pile of junk. Yes it is a fast firing gun but they do not all appear the way that they show. Not to mention the fact that almost all hunting rifles are semi-auto at this point. Had a .308 been used would they be banned???
Piers, take your myopic opinion and go back to ol England. We'll both be happier.
Thank you Matt; that's just what i thought...If Morgan feels so unsafe here let him go back to his own country..Why doesn't the media spend more time telling the gov. to harden the laws on gun crime? Look at the guy that shot all the people in the theater; he's sitting in jail for the rest of his life on a plea bargain..So we get to feed him then they would like to punish us even more by taking our guns....I think I might contact my local cable provider and demand not to pay for those news channels that like to punish us for other peoples grimes..I'm going to contact the NRA maybe they can get the word out better than I can...KEEP ON CNN MAKING THOSE CRIMINALS FAMOUS..O one other thought; This is America; We should have the right to own what we want...
Yes...send Piers back home. That's the answer to all your problems. So quick to defend your right to bear arms, but so quick to forget about the right to freedom of speech. When I was growing up, I had so much respect for the United States of America. But what I see now makes me so glad to be a Canadian. When I look south, all I see is a nation in decline. You're spending trillions of dollars fighting wars that can't be won...while people are dying on your own streets.
And there's the NRA...saying you should have armed guards in every school. I can't wait to hear what their reaction to Webster NY will be...armed guards for the fire department? Your house is burning down and you call 911...only to be told the fire department will be on it's way as soon as the armed escorts arrive. What's next...ambulances? It won't be long before you're going to need armed guards for everything.
America...once upon a time you were my best friend. But sad to say, those days are long gone. I wish you the best, I think you're going to need it.
Do you know he difference between a .223 and a .30-30? Do you know the difference between an Ar-15 (semi auto) and an M-16 (full auto?). Your heart is in the right place. But if you want to argue a position, without looking like a fool to the opposition, inform yourself.
OK I guess I will be the one to say what all others are afraid to say. They are afraid to sound uneducated or extremist or conspiracy theorist. However, I am not. Where I come from and where I live, there are multiple and multiple of people who believe the way I believe, I actually think there is the other half of this silent country. I have values and a good life, wife, kids, I believe in GOD as a christian , and life is going very well for us as we have worked hard to get where we are. I live in the great state of Texas. I am former U.S. Army. I am 32 years old. I am a normal person, not a wacko who "doesnt see the mass murder of these kids a horrible, horrible tragedy" ..... I do. I have three little kids, and this is horrible!!!! And my heart goes out to all the families of Sandy Hook. However, here it goes..... I have hunting rifles, shotguns, pistols, as they have been gifts or guns I have purchased through the years. These guns I understand are not the debate. The guns of debate are the semi-automatic .223 ARs that are one shot but can be easily fired with just your trigger waiting for the next bullet to load. You don't really have to wait. It is very fast. Can be even faster if converted to the 3 round burst or fully auto. I agree, i do not want this gun in the hands of a wacko. HOwever, In my opinion, as I see shared by so many I know is that we want these guns for another reason. I want to buy one as soon as this tragedy happened. You see the reason I want this gun is to protect myself and family from the government. This is the reason for the 2nd amendment. The 2nd amendment was put into place to protect the people from tyranny. Tyranny, socialism, communism, basically the opposite of what we have, is the only reason. As soon as you take guns from the people, you can now say that the people work for the government. The 2nd amendment was put into place to ensure that the government works for the people. These are two totally different ideas that divides this country. Half of this country has their president in office and policies and laws are and will be put into place that completely counter the other half way of thinking. The other half does not want the same. You see, I have full respect for people of the different opinion and have many conversations with the other 50%. We simply respectfully debate issues without violence everyday. However, I believe in the purpose of what I stated was that the 2nd amendment's purpose. In the last 8 years, I have seen this wonderful country fall and it appears to keep falling. I saw 911 live, 2 wars, countries debt past hope of return, GOD coming out of everything in this country, a president passing bills that no one reads, more taxes coming, more gifts for the lazy, political correctness everywhere, politicians as bobble heads, government lies. I just see this country falling and getting really bad. I simple want an AR to do my part in keeping myself protected from government. The way this country is going, I could see a war in our country. I feel like every other country is against us. We have Iran, China, Russia, Korea, taliban, Al Queda. I just feel like a major war on our soil will happen in my lifetime. I dont know if it is martial law, civil war, invasion, or what, but I see something big happening in my country. AND I WILL BE DAMNED IF I DO NOT HAVE WHAT I FEEL CAN HELP PROTECT MY FAMILY – IT IS MY RIGHT, it be auto or single shot, dont matter. If you want to solve immorality in this country, quit taking GOD out of everything and don't be afraid to say GOD if you are a public official or teacher. If you want to solve Sandy Hook, stop spending air time on gun control debates on TV and investigate why a woman like her had the weapons she did. The weapons she had is more of a shocker to me than the kid being autism. It seems to fishy to me like some other party is involved. I say guard the schools. Shopping malls you are an adult and at your own risk. But guard the kids. I have walked into my kids schools and every time I have to get on the busy front office to as for my I.D. These are our KIDS!!! come on!! There will always be wackos. By the way, on the very same day of Sandy Hook, a man in China slashed 22 kids with a knife!! It is not guns people!! IT is morals and ethics and parenting and the lack of GOD in this country. It is TV. TV has shown everything that has high ratings. Get the stupid reality TV shows of the TV and get this country to focus on healthy habits and hobbies.
Awesome post! You nailed it!
Jake great post a right on the money in regards to people have #aright2protect themselves, family, property, wealth or whatever they are responsible for. That is what the word responsibility means. Piers is just like all the other big mouth socialist liberals who have an expertise and intelligence level in one thing that gave them fame and exposure so they exploit that and discuss topics they only have a "feeling" about vs factual experience or knowledge. Pies is a British brat who thinks he knows better than everyone else. I bet his security guard carry semiautomatic weapons and just like Al Gore sits on his Redwood deck talking about saving the forests. They are a bunch of blow hards who give the earned privilege of success and achievement a bad name. I bet all those beautiful kids who are now in another place would have loved to have a guard that could have stopped this idiot. By the way America is a great place where a mother can decide how to have a relationship with her autistic son, but common sense would say going shooting and giving his access to weapons is probably not a great choice. The gun didn't drive to the school and pull it's own trigger. Bottom line is we all have a born in right – #aright2protect
Being former military, I would think that you of all people would understand the 2nd amendment. Do you really think that if the government wanted to come get your guns, you could stop them? Seriously? Think, just for a second. Military guys jump out of their tank that pulled up on your street in Texas, in battle gear, with their fully automatic weapons, and you're standing there in your underwear with your shotgun, or your .223, or pistol....really? Who'll win? Stealth bombers, artillery and fully auto machine guns or the 2nd amendment armed citizens?
I DO think that as citizens we have the right to arm ourselves. The AR platform of weapon is NOT a military weapon as Piers love's to rant about. The .223 shell it fires is NOT the same as the NATO 5.56 round, and it is semi-automatic, NOT fully automatic like the military rifle. Yes, I agree, it does look scary. All black and metal and intimidating, but the other poster was right in that a semi-auto 12 gauge would do more damage than the .223 AR.
Close the gun show loophole. Background check and waiting period on EVERY gun sold. Tax $50 on every gun and invest it into a mental health program that will help prevent people from purchasing guns that aren't responsible enough to own them. These are things that can be done right now and I'd bet most people wouldn't have an issue with them. Trying to ban "assault weapons" based on criteria that has nothing to do with the deadliness of the gun is ridiculous. Arming staff/teachers or police in public schools is just as ridiculous. The NRA is way out of line and the politicians are just trying to score points. Your god has nothing to do with this either so leave it out of it. We all need to grow up and realize that bad stuff's going to happen. People will kill other people for no good reason. If not with guns, with knives, homemade bombs or whatever else they can get their hands on. The US bombs a town in Afghanistan and 20 kids die, it's called collateral damage and no one talks about it, a tragedy like Sandyhook happens and we all act outraged. ALL children are precious and should be defended, not just the ones in the US.
And for Mr. Morgan, please allow the people you are verbally assaulting the opportunity to defend themselves and their position. You are the left's equivalent of Billy O'Reilly. Love to talk over everyone, shouting about how right you are but having NO idea what you're talking about. Do you own a gun Piers? When was the last time you shot? With the team you have on your show, you'd think that you would be a bit more accurate on your portrayal of the facts. This is a serious discussion that doesn't need to be inflated with with half-truths and talking head blow hards. Use your position to help the situation, create an atmosphere of intelligent discourse where a common ground can be found and ideas can be exchanged.
From what has been reported so far, it sounds like Nancy Lanza had all those guns for the exact same reasons you do... to protect herself, son and property in event of civil unrest.
Protection from the government should come from political activism and the ballot box. If you want to resort to force, join the national guard and fight for your State. Maybe you should discuss reorganizing the national guard to be comprised of county-level or even down to street level militia units. The problem with the really dangerous crazies is that they don't know that they are crazy.
Put guards at the school...are you kidding!!! Don't you think if someone wants to get in he can. He can shot the officer from his car, than go in the school and do his evil deeds..... We live in a small RI town...no crime..Yet we are talking about armed guards and bullet proof glass. What should we do about recess..keep the kids inside? We have a 2 acre playground, with woods in back..How many cops do we need. The right to bear arms...bull...how about the rights of us to be safe in the USA like it used to be. I guess you're right ..lets arm all the school kids, the priests and the nuns. Sounds like a great place to live...at least it used to be. My daughter told her child if shes sees someone with a gun to run if she could..if not go under the desk...she cried..she is 6 years old...what a country we have become!!!!!!!!!!!!
China slashed 30 kids with a knife...you are right...but not a one of them died!!!!!!!
Violent actions do far more to change the world (for better or worse) than peaceful actions ever have.
I have an AR 15 and other guns regardless of what action they put down if I want more guns I will get them black market or not I can just go south of the border and get them, just because re-tards are getting ahold of weapons and killing people doesn't mean we have to suffer! Many of us like to just go out shoot targets and have fun them and I will continue to do just that, yet I am glad non of my guns are registered nobody is going to take them idc what ban they put out!
May I respectfully suggest you spend less time out shooting targets with your illegal guns, and more time learning to spell. Hey, maybe you could read a book, it's not that hard if you sound out the words.
"Need" is never a metric used to determine the exercise of a right.
"Need", in this regard, is an artificial value judgment imposed by one person on another. In other words: Tyranny.
You do not get to determine what I need any more than I get to determine what you need. The list of items we possess, and actions we indulge in, that are "un-needed" and potentially (or even demonstrably) dangerous is endless.
A freedom to choose things outside of our "needs" is what it means to have self-determination and freedom. Unless someone exercising that choice directly infringes on another freedom it should not be a consideration of the State or any other person what that choice may be.
"Need" is not the justification I must make to live my life.
IT IS JUST ABSURD TO WATCH YOUR GUN-CRAZY COUNTRY FROM EUROPE.
PIERS, WHY DO YOU NOT INVESTIGATE HOW MUCH MONEY THE GUN-RIGHT ADVOCATES ON YOUR SHOW GET PAID FROM THE GUN-INDUSTRY. THE MERCHANTS OF DEAD, TO SPREAD THEIR GROTESQUE LIES.... THE NRA LIVES IN THE WORLD OF FAIRY-TALES, WHERE THERE ARE THE "GOOD GUYS" ON ONE SIDE, AND THE "BAD GUYS" ON THE OTHER SIDE.- THIS KILLER WAS A LAW-ABIDING CITIZEN, A "GOOD GUY", BEFORE HE KILLED ALL THOSE LITTLE CHILDREN WITH HIS HIGH-POWERED GUN.
PIERS, I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR FIGHT, BUT BE CAREFUL AND WATCH YOUR BACK. THERE ARE MANY MORE CRAZY GUN-NUTS OUT THERE, FULL OF HATE FOR YOU YOU AND YOUR VIEWS !!!!
THIS IS THE LETTER, I WROTE TO ONE OF THE SICK GUN-ADOVATES ON YOUR SHOW:
I live in Switzerland, where all the people celebrate the freedom, that they have – and I just saw your interview on Piers Morgan.
I must say: the blood of many more childern in America will be on your hands: Have you no shame ?
When I looked into your cold eyes, I thought: Nobody will be able to kill this man, because he is already dead inside. You must have a heart of stone !
But just keep buying guns: The Gun-Dealers, the merchants of death will be very happy in the USA, because they will sell many more guns to all you crazy gun-nuts – and many more innocent children will die in your beautiful country in the future...!
IT IS JUST ABSURD TO WATCH YOUR GUN-CRAZY COUNTRY FROM EUROPE.

It's funny how u other countries like to tell us how to run things over here and how concerned you guys are about our freedoms. You might understand how it feels to be able to tag a 10 point buck or who's the best shot at a match if you had freedom. Morgan doesn't like our freedoms either but he sure likes our American dollar..If your so worried about peoples lives get up off you pc and go feed the little kids starving to death in the other countries and stay out of our business..
and by the way: If I would have such a simple mind like this idiot from the NRA, then I would really consider him to be a VERY VERY BAD MAN, because he makes a lot of money on the fears of so many stupid people, who really think, that if every American had 10 guns, we would all live happily ever after.....
Well American think of this thought. In the 29 most developed economies in the world the United States has the most deaths of Children under the age of 14 via Guns. The Number of gun deaths of American Youth is more then all 28 of the rest of the countries COMBINED. The list of 29 Includes Brazil which is very gun violent. India with a huge heritage of rural weapons, Russia , China . Canada with one in every five persons being a gun owner. It is pretty bad when the only thing America is number one in is the number of invasions of undeclared wars of other nations or the gun slaughter of children. There are very reasonable controls that don't infringe on gun rights . The problem is too many people living in fear and paranoia in America. More people in America actually kill themselves either improperly cleaning their weapon or their children accidentally discharge a family weapon then there are gun Homicides in Canada.
What are the stats on how many legal gun owners have defended themselves by shouting someone with their legal guns each year of the 10,000 deaths by guns? Ask the lawmen, ask their families, how they feel about their jobs. Ask them if they like being the answer to 300 million guns in your country. They have less gun power than the bad guys, just ask the 3 trooper and their families from last nights rampage. The world is watching and listening, and believe me when I say, we will be watching from our countries, not from your streets, or theatres, or shopping malls, or your highways. I can't blame you for not wanting to give up your guns, 300 million guns in America.....no one wants to show up with fist to a gun fight. Piers is very passionate about his feelings, he may come off in the wrong manner, but his message is from caring, Thank you for reading my thoughts, god bless,
And this is just Ohio....
At the town hall meeting, one of the pro assault rifle fellows said if he were being attacked and didn't get the person with the first one or two bullets then he wouldn't want to have to re-load. I say if he is that bad a shot, he is extremely dangerous with any gun/rifle that can fire up to 100 bullets in under a minute. I haven't heard one good reason why someone wants/needs an assault rifle. There are laws governing how fast you can drive on the roads. If you feel it is your right to do whatever you want and tough if it could hurt someone else, why not get your assault rifle and drive 200 MPH down the highway. Give me one good reason – other than it is my right – why you need an assault rifle. If it is that dangerous where you live, consider moving to a safer country. If you have one because it is "fun" to shoot, what is the problem with having it, but stored and fired only at a rifle range? The NRA nobs blame everyone else, but when you consider how much money the gun manufacturers are paying them, it is understandable. The heads of the gun coalitions across the country and the NRA should have been in the coroner's office when the autopsies were being performed, and if after seeing what their "right to own" assault rifles did to the 20 children and 6 adults, they still stand by their "right to own", then I say the US is on a fast downhill slide into a "it's what I wnat and screw everyone else" journey.....
You hit the nail on the head....it is my right. I am not a member of the NRA and regardless what their position is (or yours) the Second Amendment guarantees me the right to have my AK47. Do I need it ? Do I need the 12 Ga. tactical shotgun I have that holds 7 rds of .00 buckshot, Do I need the .454 Cassull or the .500 S&W Magnum ? Doesn't matter, it is my RIGHT and noone is going to take that right from me. If you don't like it, just stay where you are pardner. We'd like it that way.
You actually think banning a magazine to a weapon that shoots just as fast as a semi automatic pistol with 10 shots is going to stop a monster. Either provide security for children, or confiscate all guns in the nation. If guards are good enough for my President, there good enough for my child.
I’m not going to try to convince anyone that we as Americans have a God given right to carry arms (guns) to defend ourselves. If anyone takes a serious deep look into our history and our founding fathers, it’s obvious we have that right, just as we have the right to live.
First of all the Second Amendment is in the Bill of Rights which pertain to the people (American citizens) NOT THE GOVERNMENT that in itself negates the argument it means the National Guard.
Second, The Second Amendment does not give the right to keep and bear arms……..read it.
“A well regulated militia being necessary for the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”.
It says “the right” to keep and bear arms “shall not be infringed’…….the second Amendment is only protecting the right. Our founding fathers believed that we had the right to bear arms, as no different that the right to live.
Now, read the Second Amendment once again…….our founding fathers did not want to have a military that was controlled by the government…..why….because the King of England used the military against its own people to enforce its well on the people and they did not want that to happen here. But, they realized that a military was needed after fighting for our independents, so we were give the Second Amendment as a protection from our Government. That is why it reads the way it does……!
“a militia being necessary……..then ……..the right of the people to keep and bear arms……….”
The Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting or sporting….!!!!! It sole function is to make sure we stay free and are able to resist or Government if needed. That is why here in America we are truly free.
If you knew the history of our Country…..then you would be doing everything to protect the Bill of Rights.
You do not destroy rights just because a few abuse them…..if we do, can you imagine what our future would look like……God forbid!
You know? ….if the teachers were carrying in Newtown (Sandy Hook School), they could have stopped him before he reached the children, and ending it before it started and we would be calling them “Heroes”. But because of gun control you can argue gun control laws allowed the event to play out……!
Thank you. I get so tired of the anti-gun people talking about the 2nd Amendment and our hunting rights. What?! The 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting!
Also, many say the 2nd Amendment was when there were only muskets and doesn't really pertain to all the modern weaponry we have today. If that is the case, the same applies to the 1st Amendment so Piers, how about you go stand on a street corner and shout "Hear ye, hear ye!"
I have mixed feelings on gun control but I think the way Piers Morgan and most other shows have framed the debate is very one sided. Bringing people who have had family and friends killed by guns on the show is cheap trick. The tragedies they have suffered are awful but in no way does it make them an expert on gun control. Also, shouting down anyone who disagrees with you Piers is hardly the proper way to debate an issue.
It is normal for Piers to have discussions on firearms when he knows nothing about the topic. Nothing like a Brit and Arab telling me what to do with my guns. I just seen a good report on FOX by Dana Perina. We have dogs already trained that get distroyed everyday. Put the animals in the schools instead of killing them. It cost a little bit of food and water. I sure would have like to see idiot boy run into rover about 2 weeks ago.
Is Piers MOrgan still here??? I thought it was decided to deport his Limey Behind already, and NO PIERS. I don't believe you are covered by the 1st Amendment. That is researved for citizens. Get the F#%$ OUT!!!
P. Morgans not leaving he likes our money....He wants us to pay him but doesn't want us to have our rights....He's so stupid and mixed up he doesn't even know what he believes...When this whole thing first started he was TOTALLY against guns a few shows later he was saying how he believed in the 2nd amendment...It's just funny to me how people from other country want to tell us how to live when they don't understand how it feels to really be free...I saw a program a few yrs back from Australia; They were telling us not to give up our guns like they had. How they got little money for their guns some of them they had in their family for generations. It really restricted their hunting and other things...People we live in America; We should have the right to own what we want but with that comes great responsibility..For those that want to do things like the theater massacre; Well an eye for an eye would be good...And those from other countries that get on here acting like their so concerned about lives and human kind; Why don't they get off their pc and go feed the millions of kids STARVING a slow agonising death in other countries and stay out of our business...
I'm a Canadian citizen and I too was revolted by the NRA's statement on Friday. Their feigned compassion and their gall to use this tragic incident to promote their consistent agenda of having more guns and more powerful guns, as if that will solve this National problem. It is their agenda which has played a huge part in this whole situation coming about in the first place.
I will concede however, that technology will continue to change and advance as always. We no longer drive around in Model T's, listen to 8-track tapes, or use floppy discs, etc., etc. Guns are no different. However, having said that, a big mistake was made when semi-auto guns were allowed to be had by the general public. These should have been reserved for the police and military only. We could have still had our bolt action rifles for hunting and revolvers for self-defense, neither of which hold large numbers of bullets or can be reloaded quickly like semi-autos. Big difference having a gun that holds only 5 or 6 bullets, compared to one that holds 19 or 30 and can be reloaded with a new clip within a few seconds.
The problem we have now is, semi-autos came out in the early 1970's (I think), so there are a lot of them in circulation out there across America. How do you possibly recall all of them back? Even if the government offers a buy back program, I doubt if many will turn them in, unless they are hard up for cash.
Putting guns in schools for defense is not such a great idea though, for several reasons:
1) The gunman would have the upper hand because of the element of surprise. Nobody expects a school with young children to be attacked, so staff would be caught off guard. The element of surprise is very powerful. Remember December 7, 1941, and our guys were able to shoot back to some degree. The school incident was a much smaller scale, for sure, but it's still the same principle that applies.
2) The first response to an attack like that one in Newtown, is terror and the urgent need to get the children and yourself to a safe location. Not to pull out a gun. If the gunman sees you reaching for a gun while you are in plain view of him, chances are you will be the first one going down.
3) I don't think any gunman, like the one in Newtown, would be intimidated by knowing the school had guns. He just killed his own mother (an atrocious act in itself) before he came to the school to murder those innocent little children and those teachers. I wouldn't doubt that he already had his mind made up that he was going to kill himself after the shooting spree. So, anyone in that frame of mind is like a robot. There is no conscience or remorse. He simply didn't give a damn about the consequences.
4) If a teacher did have a gun or access to a gun on site, would she be steady enough, in that terrifying situation, to fire an accurate enough shot to kill the gunman without harming anyone else in the area, with all that confusion going on. That would take a lot of specialized training to do that successfully, I think.
5) The gunman could have gotten the gun from the teacher, if he subdued her before she got control of the situation. Then he would have another weapon to use.
So, you see there are to many possible ways things could go terribly wrong if more guns are brought into the situation.
These are just my opinions, the way I see it. I'm sure others will have differing opinions.
What's going on in America needs to be addresssed. The double standard is our demise. When the NRA wants our teachers to be armed only tell me how sick our society has become. Soon this tragedy will be forgotten with something bigger and move evil. We are cursed nation we let thigs get this bad. We looked away, it was non of our business like good citizens. Our reports are not free to speak out are they? Before some loony starts calling names or they get fired for saying the wrong thing. Does any one remember Rich Sanchaiz ?
It's not about why someone needs a gun, it's about the right to own a gun.
Thank you to Piers Morgan for being real about the shocking mass murder of innocent children, which might have been avoided if our country had not let guns proliferate, endangering everyone. I'm so glad Piers is showing the stupidity of our country to allow the Not Responsible for Anything rule Americans, when it comes to guns. Why should Americans be allowed to go to the corner Walmart and buy guns, people who are not even licensed, may be mentally ill, may be criminals, or at gun show flea markets, or anywhere else? Citizens in other countries that are stricter, where you can't just go out to buy a gun in the store down the street, but allow hunters to have a hunting rifle, have much stricter licensing to be able to purchase a rifle for hunting, and most citizens don't even want a gun. We are out of control in our country and being led by NRA, a stupid and extremist club of people with the love of a violent pasttime, shooting animals to death, for fun, not food. So, Piers, please keep up your dose of reality in American. Most people agree with you. And, unfortunately, most Americans don't understand that our country stands out in this, and is abnormal with its lenicency, so it's up to you to be forceful in your message.
Pete these second Amendment clingers cant seem to every understand the article. The article is for a well regulated Militia not a right to arm a population including 3 million mentally ill people in America.
How good the read the words of reason.
The bottom line dear people is this: Is the ownership of a lethal weapon more important than the life of a child?
I think not.
I am a gun owner and believe in the right of people to bear arms, but I do believe there are some common sense changes that need to be made. First close the loopholes. Every sale needs to have a background check and waiting period. Second ammunition should be purchased in person and not via internet etc. Limits should also be placed on the number of rounds that a weapon or magazine can hold. I know that this is not popular with some. If you need thirty rounds to take down your prey then you need to take some shooting lessons and if you need thirty rounds to take down your assailant then your dead so why have a gun. Unless stuck in a world of flesh eating zombies or a combat zone, one shot one kill which brings me to my last point. Gun 101 teaches to never point a gun at anyone or anything that you do not intend to kill. KILL... A gun is designed to kill and at the very least inflict horrific damage. Given the very nature of their purpose why wouldn't we want prevent them from getting into the hands of someone that should not have them?
People dont "need" AR-15s in urban areas more than they "need" flat screen televisions or SUVs.
The American people enjoy freedom on a scale that most people in other countries only dream of. Be careful what you wish for.
No more talks. Talks will not change one mind, instead lets have an experiment.
Divide the country east and west. On the east have strict gun controls, only
single shot rifles and shotguns will be lawful, other guns will be banned. On
the west side there will be no restrictions on guns, all will be legal. Run the
experiment for 3 or 5 years. At the end of the experiment, lets compare the
amount of gun deaths on each side. Then let the people decide how they want to
go. I think that would be very useful.
St. Pete, FL
You docile cud chewing Eloi don't have a clue; you pine to be disarmed in your pathetic journey to the Abattoir!
whats else can you expect from people who like to kill bears and ducks for fun ?.....
Mr. williams I have to ask you would you disarm people who live in say alaska? Were ever yr moose and bear attacks kill and maim people in there own yards? Or when not even hunting just fishing they tell you to be armed cause bear will attack for your fish. Just 2 weeks ago on alaska state troopers on Nat geo channel. It showed a trooper called to a home. cause a moose wouldnt leave when he tried to holler at it it charged him. he had to shoot too kill. An adult moose can weigh nearly a thousand pds. In california there have been people attacked and killed hikeing and walking by mountain lions. Im just saying there are valid needs for fire arms.
This is the lie you people are being told. Nowhere can anyone get a "military grade assault rifle". This is what hapens when a bunch of people who know little to nothing about guns tells a general populace who knows even less what they should think and feel.
Explain what about so called "assault rifles" is so scary to you people, other than appearance. Only technical answers will be accepted. "They're military, they're for killers, and nobody need's them" will not be accepted. Show some actual thought and technical knowldge.
FACT: This ar-15 (the closest thing to an M16 a person can buy) is nothing more than a .223 caliber single shot hunting rifle.
Civilian legal "assault rifles" are not more "military hardware" than Jeep Wranglers and Hummer H2s are military vehicles.
They still kill everything, and a guy must feel real macho when he's killing or pretending to be killing. Kind of like being the star in a Rambo/James Bond kind of movie, but those fireman were in a real-life movie. Senseless. How did that ex-con get his gun and amunition?????
If this murderer had been executed, like they all should be! He wouldn't of murdered again!
Pete Smith has the correct idea.
Common sense regulations should require all civilian semiautomatic weapons be kept at secure gun clubs.
I am a gun owner. I will give up all my guns and go to Englands gun laws of hunting clubs and storeing them there. If at the same time that goes into effect. That the same rules go for the way my mother and thousands of americans are murdered every year. A repeat drunk driver hit her head on and murdered her while he walked away. So i say ban all public sale of booze. If you want too drink then join a club were you drink there and stay there. Cause like all the people who say they live in fear of guns and dont respect lawful ownership anymore. I DONT drink and im tired liveing in fear of all the bad drinkers who dont respect my life and others. So Please explain the difference
I am somewhat amazed by this debate, ban automatic guns, etc etc, If i wish to drive a vehicle I am required to take a driving test, sometimes a medical eye sight test etc etc, I am required to obey traffic rules and if i do not i lose my liciense.
Anybody seems able to buy a gun without having to prove they know how to use it, that they are medically fit, not a drug usr or addicted to alchlkol. Seems to me that the federal law should be introduced (which the NRA should support).
All Gun holders will have to take and pass a gun handling course. Have a mediacal/drug test, Fit a gun safe in thier house, and have a home visit by a qualified Fiearms inspector. And any application should be endorsed by 2 persons (not Related to the applicant) which confirms to te best of thier knowledge the applicant is of sound mind.
I would agree to do that all with my guns. If you all agree to stop selling alcohol to public. And if you drunks want to drink, it has to be in a secure guarded club. In 2011 10,228 people killed from drinking and driveing. So i wont have to lose another family member to a drunk driver again. See i dont drink so why should i care that its a small fraction that cant be responsible drinking ruin lives. And now im supposed to believe that with 3 states with legal pot use that my family is still safe on road? What im saying is be consistant if we want to save lives. Why was my mother being killed and burned alive by a repeat drunk driver different than if she was shot by a crazy person? See freedom in america sometimes means i have respect others rights even when it might affect me. And its something i would never do myself.
I did not see Geoffry Canada's response to Wayne LaPierre. What I did see was Piers' interview with Larry Pratt, director of Gun Owners of America. Pratt reiterated the NRA and Wayne LaPierre's fantasy narrative of heroic gun owners defending helpless children and unarmed adults with their quick draw and deadly aim.
This narrative should be easy to ridicule, but Mr. Morgan did not take that opportunity. Pratt and LaPierre would have us believe a guy with a concealed weapon will stand up and shoot a nut armed with an AR-15, in a dark theater, firing 6 rounds/minute from a 30 round clip – before said nut kills someone. That is simply crazy. Why don't they have him shoot the bad guy's AR-15 out of his hands as well? Is the heroic NRA member going to start shooting the bad guy starts shooting? In the dark? Our Hero isn't going to inadvertenly blow away a couple of bystanders? Oops, sorry, but I AM the good guy here...
I understand there were armed individuals at Columbine. If so, how effective were they? In a high school of 1,000 students, are one or two armed police going to prevent carnage in a classroom? The cops can't be everywhere.
When Gabby Giffords was shot, the whole thing was over in 45 seconds. If the heroic NRA dude is going to save the day in a situtation like that, he's got to be not just quick on the trigger, but quick to analyze what's going on, and constantly on the alert. Is that the kind of guy we want wandering around and armed with a semiautomatic, all wound up and ready to "save" someone in a perceived incident? (But in reality the guy will still be trying to unzip his coat and get out his "piece", when there are 19 people lying bleeding on the ground around him)
The Piers Morgans have got to change the narrative. Make it clear, ridicule it, get in charge, put Larry and Wayne and their backers, the NSSF on the defensive.
I am Canadian and our society DOES NOT live by the gun. Americans must feel very insecure when they leave the USA and travel to countries whose people do not pack guns. The more guns people own the greater chance of
these horrible massacres. By talking about mental illnes, although a problem, is really distracting from the real issue -
the almighty gun.
What the government is calling mental illness is also called TBI or PTSD. These are injuries recieved in war. I just had a buddy end his time in service because he was in an IED blast. He claimed disability at the VA and had to sign paperwork and be entered into the Federal data base that restricks him from buying a gun. I bet you there are no professional football player forced to enter the data base.
If self-defense is the reason for owning a gun....how many incidents of 'self-defense" are there each day???? more than the number of deaths do you suppose?
wonder why nobody has asked that question?
Most of us – gun nuts included – will go an entire lifetime without being in a situation where we need to defend ourselves. The odds are even less that we would be in a position where the only adequate means of defense is an assault rifle. Any scenario the pro-gun nuts roll out is fantasy and paranoia. How long before a pizza makes a late nite delivery at the wrong house at gets blown away by one of these freaks? They claim self defense but that's a lie. They have a latent desire for all hell to break loose so they can let the bullets fly.
Barb, In reply to your question:
"How effective would 1 or 2 people out of a thousand be"etc. They would be far more effective than ZERO people. Is your idea to crawl into a corner and wait for the whaco to GET AROUND TO YOU.
My oh My what a considerate victim you are. Well done.
Rob C. This debate is becoming somewhat juvenile at this point. Ask yourself one question for me Rob. Do guns IN THE HANDS OF REGULAR CIVILIANS save more lives than they take? NO!!!! Do the research and you'll find that YES, there are cases where people do defend themselves with a gun and are able to prevent loss of life BUT I would bet my own life on it that it is not the norm. I wanna know where all you gun lovers live that requires all this gun power? I mean, this is mostly white America that is hell bent on treating the 2nd Amendment like God delivered it himself. I don't know about you but I live comfortably in the suburbs and I NEVER feel like I need to have a gun to protect my family. I think the fear and the fact that you have the right comes first before the actual incident. 98% of people have NEVER fended off a criminal with a gun and never will. But day by day Americans die by gun deaths at a horrific rate due to suicide, accidents, murder, etc. The ends have to justify the means. If guns don't save more lives than they take, if guns more often than not end up in the wrong hands versus the right hands, then we have to come up with a better solution that adding more guns to an already irresponsible society.
It's about time the American governmeny got tough with these "cowboys" the government runs the Country and should show these idiots who is in charge.
Obviously you don't live in America or you would know that the government doesn't rule the people. the people rule the government. The government tried to take the peoples guns way back on April 19, 1775. It didn't end well for the government
Way to go Shawn! I believe Pier's had some relatives in the battle before they started the long swim home.
Wow! If ultimate control makes you warm and fuzzy then I suggest you commit a felony sufficient to assure you a long stay in one of the government safe houses that control your every move. I am smarter than the government. Don't I pose your masochistic ways on me or people like me who enjoy freedom.
Tony, how quickly you forget.. The NRA has all of the pro-gun politicians in their pockets or should I say wallets. Before voting in the next election, why not research how the people running for office, voted when it came to a sensible resolution to gun violence. If the politicians knew that Americans were finally ready for positive action, they may stop their open-handed money grabbing from their NRA bed pals. You would have a great opportunity to see which politicians had the cojones to do what's right for America, rather than what is guaranteed to keep them in office. The NRA has waaaay too much power.
Really? It took the NRA a week to come up with such a poorly thought out response? How is an armed guard going to cover every inch of a school every minute of the day? And what about the parks, movie theatres, shopping malls, grocery stores, post offices, street corners and all the other places we go and expect to be safe. Are we to put armed guards there too?
Lisa, are you really trusting your own safety to someone else?
You are right Lisa...this is the NRA's "vision" for America? What a joke. Armed police in every school is simply insane. The public needs to demand that the high capacity assault weapons be made illegal and possession a crime. There is no reason to have them. It is time for Americans to stand up to these nuts.
Martha, it is a crime in Connecticut. Laws prevent nothing!
In response to Steve Pulcheon;
What is there to stop a Connecticut resident from going to a neighboring state to buy his/her weapon of choice. If you are to have effective laws controlling guns, it has to be consistent in every state. It can't be a patchwork, hodge-podge system. That will never work. You don't have to be a genius to see through that.
So, here is another problem. How do we acheive consistency in gun control right across the country, when you have some states which are pro-gun and others who are anti-gun? It now becomes a political, state by state, battle. Surely, though, the Newtown massacre ought be a strong enough reason for the entire nation to come together and do the right thing. DO NOT MAKE THIS INTO A POLITICAL FOOTBALL! America, you can, and you must, do better than that! STOP THE SENSELESS SLAUGHTER, NOW!!!
If you have not looked lately, there are security guards at all the places you have mentioned. you must have your face in your cell phone and have not noticed all the security we have around us on a daily basis. WAKE UP>>>>>So we can protect our president with security, and our airports, and our banks, and movie stars, and post offices and even wal-mart BUT we leave our schools wide open for any crazy to walk right on in...mmmmmmm...That does not seem right to me..
Move to France then, Mr. Canada. How about go to Israel where every block you see people off duty heading home with automatic weapons slung over their shoulder. Over there you're most likey to be blown apart instead of being shot. I'll own one because I want one. News flash people: Most people who own one usually do take them to the country, or a range. If you want to do something take these freaks' car keys away. Some are right, you don't need an Uzi to hunt Bambi. You also don't need a Limo, or a cadillac, or any large and/or high dollar car to get around in when a Hyundai will do just peachy. Get your heads out. End of conversation.
Jerry. Conversation back on. Ok so did you just compare high military fire power to a luxury car? You actually stole that from the idiot on tv the other night but I digress. I'm startin' to think people just don't love America or other human beings like they claim they do. WAKE UP!!!! Loss of life is not a damn game!!!! The right for you to use your damn gun like a toy, huntin' white tail, shootin' paper targets, and to walk around your house in the dark once every 6 years when your house creaks so you can yell "Anybody down there? I've got my gun and I'm not afraid to use it!" is not enough justification to keep guns in the hands of regular civilians. More deaths happen due to suicide, street violence, etc, than people actually defending their homes. There is hope though. ALL WE HAVE TO DO JERRY is do a MASSIVE gun buy back program to try to get at least 3/4 of the illegal guns off the streets first. Then maybe you legal gun owners will feel a little bit safer in your suburban neighborhoods where most of us experience very limited if any break in attempts.
Yes, I'm quite sure you're right. Let's buy back the guns. I'm sure the bad guys will willing swap their gats for a few bucks. Yes, let's call up ol' Ben B. at the Federal Reserve and just have him print up some more greenbacks. What's another trillion or two in debt. Yes, I'm quite sure you're onto something.....really stupid!
This is a real world we live in. There are bad people out there and you should thank God you haven't had to deal with what these folks have had to deal with. Only folks who have a problem with having a gun are those who haven't had a need to have one. Guess you live in that fairy tale world.
Loss of life is not a game? I COMPLETLY agree soo is 10,228 people killed in america in 2011 too many? Then great i expect you would agree to ban public sale of alcohol? The way my mother was murdered 3 yrs ago. repeat drunk driver hit her head on he walked away. She burned alive. Soo you dont have or like guns. And want them gone. I DONT drink so i want it gone. Oh and if you say ya but guns kill multiple people look it up 3 yrs ago a drunk truck driver hit a school bus killed multiple kids and injured more. Please explain the difference to me?
You could do that, if you joined the local militia, otherwise known as the IDF. Otherwise, after an extensive background check and training, you could purchase your private weapon. And your lifetime supply of fifty (5 zero) rounds. See http://www.jpost.com/NationalNews/Article.aspx?id=296480, quoting Yaakov Amit, the head of the Public Security Ministry’s Firearms Licensing Department
You will notown one just "because you want one".
Perhaps you were absent the day they taught you about the second amendment. The right to bear arms was the right to defend yourself against an unjust government. So the need for such powerful firearms should match those that would come at you by that very same government that now wants to deny you that same right. Will they start busting down your door to enforce any new law...with firepower? I believe the same thing happened a few years ago in England...where nobody has guns. The problem is our negative, ugly, nasty society that thrives on bad mouthing all things all the time. People that have mental health issues can't tell the difference between people just running their mouths and a true need to correct a grave injustice. Our society is constantly bombarded with feigned outrage we hear over the airwaves, in the grocery stores, workplaces, living rooms and classrooms throughout this country. This discussion is a perfect example of how ugly and nasty we have become culturally. Keep the outrage going….and expect this to continue. The problem is this culture we have created. And until we changer and decide it is better to be KIND to one another, this will never change.
Mizby is indeed "on target." (DISCLAIMER: in presenting what I think is the NRA's interpretation of the Second Amendment, please don't think that I personally support this point of view.) If you believe that we need to have an armed citizenry in order to ensure their ability to rise up against an unjust government (and its military), then citizens need access to the same kind of firepower the military has. This means assault weapons and high capacity clips and armor piercing bullets. Maybe it means grenades. high explosive devices and rocket launchers too. If we are going to embrace this philosophy, then we aren't going to be able to keep dangerous high capacity weapons from falling into the hands of unbalanced people. In such a situation, I would hope that several armed people (not all of whom have taken the NRA safety course) don't all open fire on the unbalanced person at the same time and hit me in the process. This is why I tend to favor coordinated responses by law enforcement or security personnel if possible. Personally I am willing to take my chances with our governments (federal, state and local) monopolizing assault weapons since I think there is little danger of the US government going off the tracks and turning us into North Korea (or Saudi Arabia or Yemen). I don't think economic problems or my disagreements over some Supreme Court rulings warrant armed insurrection.
Yes, Jill, I'll have to remember that–a coordinated attack against the bad guy who is trying to break into my house. Now exactly how long after I call 911 is all this coordination supposed to take? I hope the "coordinators" who show up at my house are better shots that those REALLY coordinated N.Y. City cops who shot up a bunch of innocent bystanders while trying to shoot the bad guy in a coordinated fashion. Yes, I'm sure you right.
Seriously? Equivalent fire power? So all private citizens should have access to nuclear weapons and stealth bombers? You people scare me. I was born here, have always lived in the US, and have never felt the need to own a fire arm. I have lived in the city and in rural areas. I have a brother who had a gun held to his head during a robbery. I know people who have hunting rifles and handguns. I believe we need more extensive background checks on every fire arm sold, we need a registry of gun owners, we need limits on how many firearms one person can own, and we need to ban all weapons similar to the AR-15 and the magazines that hold 30 or more bullets. I am a Christian and pray for sanity in ths country.
"When I see the color of the skin, it means nothing to me! Here is a Black Man who nobt voted for Obama, just adding more cream on the cake. Obama's to blaim for this shooting, just like he is to blame for Benghazi and the freak storm on the east coast. It all happened on his watch, while he was busy drinking beer, with his Kin Folk."
The NRA wants more armed volunteers to protect people...wasn't George Zimmerman an armed volunteer?
I think mr. La Pierre is george zimmerman's uncle ! I think they have got to be related both are not the brightest bulbs on the X-mas tree
Also, what happens when two gunmen come to a school? Will the one armed guard at each school be able to protect everyone from multiple gunmen with AR-15s? Will we need two, three, four people appointed at each school...and at the local school district in the suburb by me, the district had a married police officer assigned to the high school, but had to fire him for sleeping with a student (off campus). (He was then hired by another local police agency, until being charged with inappropriate behavior with a prisoner). I have a lot of friends who are great police officers and take their jobs seriously, but if an officer can do this here, he can do it anywhere. If anything, there should be a checkpoint away from the school entrance, whether it is manned or by video, where visitors can be screened prior to getting on school grounds.
And he (Zimmerman) survived!
Because he wasn't the victim...
Transvon was going to kill Zimmerman.Traypon got what he deserved
I have been a gun owner since I was 13 yrs old ,almost 55 yrs now! we didn't have semi-automatic guns then. We knew we didn't need them ! I know they are worthless for hunting, they destroy the meat !! they (automatic guns) are for killing people period. mr.La Pierre doesn't represent me or any responsible gun owner!!!
Most old timers never like the ar's, its too hard on thrir joints and not nostalgic enough for people who grew upnwatching and admiring westerns and john wayne. They also dont like iphones, ipads, and new technology, doesnt mean ipads and ipods are not the most popular tech gdgets in the workd. There is a reason AR is the most sold rifle in this country, young people like me dig it, the NRA definetly speaks for me, every store is selling out of rifles and magazine, does that show peoples distain? Nope, popular as ever. With more backing from young NRA members, rest easy old timer, your time has passed, its our time now, the future of NRA for the new millenium.
I love it when gun owners step in it like this. Your "distain" and disrespect for "old timers" should make you VERY anti-gun sir. I mean, it was those slave owning, women oppressing, badly dressed, wig wearing forefathers of yours TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO that wrote that thing about rights, and guns, blah blah blah, you know. I would think that a modernized guy such as yourself would turn your back to the ways of the past. I mean I would think a 21st century, up to the minute, cutting edge, bright thinker like you would see that more idiots get there hands on weapons than home defending from intruder civilians. Just outta curiosity, how many times do you watch the news each night and see "man shoots burglar while breaking into his home" versus "there was a triple homicide on 44th and (fill in whatever is bad neighborhood where you live here)". Or "A teenage girl that was bullied committed suicide today". Or "20 year old that felt ostracized from society and also had a mental condition got a hold of his mothers guns and...........". We have to change man. Not for the worse, but for the better. The aim "back in the day" was not to be what we have today in 2012. An extremely violent society thats answer is to filter MORE guns into it for MORE chance for human error.
Sure there were semi auto around when you were young. First one was built in the 1890s , Browning Auto 5 shotgun which is semi auto around 1904. How is a semi auto rifle going to tear up any more meat than a bolt action or single shot of the same caliber when they both only fire one round with the pull of the trigger?
Whether or not you agree with Piers Morgan you have to admit that he is very biased, rude, doesn't care for facts, and shouldn't be in the position he is. CNN needs to get him off the air. I think it reflects poorly on CNN that a so called "professional" calls guests and all Americans who disagree with him idiots. This man is a moron and Americans need to discount any and all words that come out of his mouth. Hey wait a minute, he's not even an American.....
I agree peirs Morgan is so full of horse crap. If he doesn't agree with our freedoms he should go home. No one will miss him. He is the worst news person in America He knows nothing about the facts.
Umm, have you noticed that EVERYBODY not from here thinks we're batsh** crazy? Canadians, Brits, the list goes on and on. The answer can't simply be GUNS, GUNS, and MORE GUNS,....... can it? Is that what your forefathers had in mind for this country? Is that the world that you wanna live in, or worse, is that the world you're willing to accept? I thought being an instrument of progress, positive thinking, love thy neighbor, things like that are what made us a great nation? I'm not oblivious to the fact that there are evils, but try arming every individual with a gun and watch how high the crime rate will go up domestically. The news after the holidays will read like this" two brothers got in an argument at Xmas dinner after what started as a simple conversation and stroll down memory lane about who was the better athlete, but ended up in one brother brandishing his gun and the other brother in self defense shot him in the chest." Now that might be an attempt at slight humor but in reality, minor discrepancies and differences will blow up like that. You see all the soccer dad and little league dad incidents that happen between parents and coaches, parents and refs, parents and other parents. Now add a loaded gun on every individual into the mix. What originally may have just been fisticuffs has now ended up in someone's death. I could do these scenarios all day but you get the point. WE HAVE A PROBLEM. Can we not add to it by guaranteeing that more weapons end up in the hands of criminals? With some ramped up law changes in regards to illegal weapons, gun buy backs, and the over all stopping of mass production of weapons we can take back this great country of ours.
Could not agree more!
THANK YOU!!! He; Piers Morgan; will ask the guest a question and when he does not get the response he wants...then all of a sudden the guest is a moron. If he hates it so much...THEN GO BACK HOME! TAKE SIMON COWELL WITH HIM!!! NO ONE is addressing that this shooter at Newtown, the one in Aurora, and the one at Virginia Tech ALL HAD MENTAL ISSUES!
Then stop watching. That'll make him leave. Otherwise watch and actually get an education.
He talks over people because they're idiots, they're TOTALLY wrong about guns, and he's passionate about trying to save this country. It almost sounds juvenile to even hear someone say "He needs to go back home to his country if he doesn't like the way we kill ourselves with our guns". SMH Jesus! But the real reason I replied is in regards to your comment about mental issues. An issue it is, yes. But plenty of crazy people have always and will always roam the U.S. But what we want to make sure of is that when someone is already diagnosed as crazy, is crazy but hasn't been diagnosed, or has a crazy moment of bad judgement, that he or she doesn't have a weapon around that can not only hurt themselves but hurt several others. Point being, if there's no gun around then they have to use a different method of, God forbid, suicide etc. I'd be willing to bet money if little Adam Lanza only had access to let's say just a 9mm he would have probably been satisfied with just offing mommy and then offing himself. BUT NOOOOOO. SInce he had NRA weapons of death, not weapons of defense, he ramped up his crazy to a WHOLE different level. And that's how the mind works. Always going overboard, always searching for a bigger and better high (you know who you are), and always everything a flair for the dramatic. If we all had grenades, if we all had laser guns, OH SH** here's a doozy, if we all had a button to press to launch nuclear weapons against said enemy in our homes, we'd commit total genocide! Piers has noticed what most of us here have noticed but definitely other people with a better outside view have noticed. We're killing each other more often than not in careless and callous ways, and self defense of our property and person are few and far between. Fits of anger, fits of rage, depression, reaction to rejection, and knee jerk reactions to situations are the norm.
No...he talks over people to make it look like he gives a damn. He does it to get ratings. The media is using this tragedy to get ratings. As soon as the next big thing happens you will not hear of the Newtown Massacre anymore. If you honestly think that if these weapons are banned that there will not be any gun violence then you are seriously mistaken. The media is completely neglecting the issue of mental illness. The recent school shooting, the Oregon movie theatre, and the Virginia Tech ALL had mental issues. Also, in almost every Mass Shooting the shooter SHOULD NOT have had access to the weapons. If his mother would have done what a RESPONSIBLE LAW ABIDING GUN OWNER SHOULD have done...and that is to A)store the weapon unloaded B)secure the weapon with a trigger lock; and C) keep all of it locked up in a double locked gun safe...this would not have happened. She was a victim but she was negligent in the handling of these weapons...ESPECIALLY if she knew her son had issues and from what the media is saying, she did. If you research, you will see all of these MURDERS with guns are very rarely commited by responsible law abiding gun owners. To punish these people who follow the rules is like you commiting a murder and they HAVE PROOF of this but they put me to death for it.
B. Billings, you much be crazy. and you don't care about human life
Piers, I am a Canadian I just got home from work and just now finished watching the NRA press conference. It makes me so upset and angry that I literally shed tears. Every American should be appalled by the response of the NRA. If Adam Lanza did not have access to the guns that he did this tragedy would not have happened. That is the bottom line. No one wants to talk about that, but that is the truth . My advice is to get out while you can. I can't even believe what I am hearing. I don't know how you live there. The arguments are ludicrous and based on lies. I feel like I am watching a movie. More guns does not equal more safety. I grew up with guns. They were meant for hunting. I have never been introduced to guns as a means to protect myself or my property. Wake up America!!!!!!!
He lives here to be famous, make oodles of money and soeak freely, because he could not do the same in Uk. He aint leaving becuase half the crap he says here eould put him in jail back home. Freedom of speech is not so free in uk.
Have you read some of the newspapers and news pages in the UK? What Piers says is tame compared to what is said there. I assure you free speech is alive and well in the UK and he would definitely not be put in jail.
Speaking about oodles of money ...Gee...I thought you were speaking about the NRA!!!!!!!!!!!!
I live by a few simple rules and my number one rule is I stay out of your business you stay out of mine. I believe Piers has no right to comment on what policies should or should not be here in my country do to the fact that he is a guest. Same is true to my neighbors to the north I have been in Canada hundreds of times over the years to visit family and for business. While most Canadians are friendly and because they still fall under the Queen the think they have a right to say how mean and messed up America is. Well my expierence is that the ones who try to push their opions on us Americans its because you wish you had our freedoms.
Stan that would be true if he was just saying "Oh you Americans and your bloody rubbish about (insert any topic but gun deaths in America here)". No. That's not at all what he's doing so don't blow him off like he's one of the snobby Brits in the movie Oxford Blues (old 80's classic) givin' Rob Lowe a hard time because they detest Americans. He's talking about FACTUAL information about GUN DEATHS IN AMERICA and how they MORE OFTEN THAN NOT are not used for defending your home or person. I bet 99% of NRA members, people on this thread, and all those other gun loving cretins haven't ever had to, NOR will ever, use their weapon to fend off a criminal. Where? In their gated community? Where? In the quiet suburbs of Dallas, Beverly Hills, Idaho, Oregon, or Iowa? Look, I stay in the suburbs of Kansas City in what's not even the richest suburb available but it's really nice. You know how many break ins, self defense shootings, "Stop, put down my flat screen you crook!' type of situations we have? NONE!!!!. Why? BECAUSE IT"S NOT THE NORM!!!!! So America's fear of some kind of midnight assassin comin' in through your window like that crazy youtube guy from the projects Antoine Dodson said "hide your kids, hide your wife, hide your husband, cause they rapin' errybody" just aint happenin'. And if it does happen on a few occasions a day out of the MILLIONS of people who lay their heads down peacefully at night, then those are just casualties we have to live with and understand there's no perfect system. But you know what's not even CLOSE TO a perfect system? The way it is now with TOO MANY PEOPLE having guns and trying to add more guns to the situation.
Yes, Piers, please, get out. Now.
Saoslund. I see you replying to everyone's post with negativity but with no solutions. In regards to one of your replies to my "buy back program" idea that you deemed "really stupid" you should do your research. I didn't invent the idea. Australia spent a mere $500,000 million for gun buy backs and TREMENDOUSLY cut their guns and gun violence down. That doesn't have to come from the Fed Reserve. Warren Buffet, T. Boone Pickens, Oprah, hell you could get 20 Hollywood celebrities on board to fund it. Get creative Saoslund and try to put a reasonable conversation on the table. You responded to Jill about having to "call 911 and waiting on officers". Listen, I think that's 98% of America's problem. Living in fear. 98% of avid gun owners NEVER EVEN HAVE TO FEND OFF A PERPETRATOR IN THEIR LIVES!!!!! So why this "I need my gun" mentality? I honestly think it's because those old wise men TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO told you so. Doesn't work for this time period when more thugs have weapons than honest, good, responsible gun owners. Guns take more lives than they save when in the hands of regular civilians. And for people who put this off on mental issues, 75% of these mass murders are committed by totally sane individuals. And yes Hitler killed mass people with gas but it was after they where all led by guns. Also any other cases of fertilizer bomb builders, people highjacking planes and ramming them into buildings, swords, knifes, etc, are few and far between. They are not the norm. GUNS ARE THE NORM. All of your comments are either against registering all guns, buying back guns off the streets, and the obvious which is to completely stop the selling of guns to regular citizens. So if you have any input to get to a better America going forward that doesn't start with "Arm every single person in America GUNS, GUNS, GUNS!!!" then I'd love to hear your points.
*$500,000,000 or five hundred million for gun buy back program.
The NRA press conference was spot on....So we can protect everything else in this country with guns but we can't protect our schools with guns......
The NRA "press release" was an idiotic display of ignorance & shown the NRA's complete lack of empathy for anything not made of iron, chrome, or aluminum.
Pierce is an entertainer. Like simon from the idol, just british arrogant rich people who think they are always right. The NRA is strong, and on the attack. As a gun owner and NRA member. Im proud of what lepierre said. Hey liberal idiots, you dont even know the difference between magazines, bullets, assult rifles, and even the term semi auto. Keep pushing ur idiotic agenda. It wont go anywhere. All you keep saying just like zombies " ban assult rifles, this semiauto stuff, ban the massive high velocity magazines" you sound like freaking morons.
I am a gun owner, have been for a long time now, and I must say I'm sickened by many of the comments that I have read, everyone pointing fingers, everyone blaming something!!!! How about the shooter does anyone blame him? He had access to firearms, absolutely unacceptable!! Is limiting access for the lawful citizen going to stop all of these madmen? Is that really the answer? I am so tired of the knee jerk reactions of our government as well as all of you who jump on the bandwagon to bash every gun owner out there. The reactions of many gun owners is always on the defensive because its never a civil discussion, but rather, a shouting match, an all out assault on gun owners!!! Should there a changed in gun laws, maybe, will it stop all the mass shootings, maybe, I don't know, many of you don't know, but it's a subject worthy of a DISCUSSION!!!!!! So all of you who post in an attempt to bash and blame, THINK, before you speak!!!! It's a passionate topic on both sides of the fence, but it's a topic with many variables!
The undisputable fact remains that all mass killings are done with firearms. That means firearms are the number one problem. Granted, people that do killings have mental issues or snap. So we can put more emphasis on treating mental illness and so on. However, we need to deal with the number one problem. After Newtown, my opinion has change (enough is enough) one gun in public hands is one gun too many. We American citizens need to create an anti NRA organization and lobby politicians.
Public ownership of firearms is a fundamental RIGHT in America. Take away that right and the others will follow.
"Mass killings are done with firearms". Hmmm.... if history serves me right, I think Hitler did pretty good with gas. Sadam also liked the gas–just ask the Kurds. Oh, yeah, you can't ask them cause their all dead from being gassed. Timothy McVeigh used fertilizer and ammonia. Get real. Mass killings have been done with bombs, gas, guns, swords, fire, etc, etc.
To a great degree the NRA is responsible for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction available to anyone who wants them. Now they say there are too many guns in this society and the only answer is to give people more weapons of the same kind. It's truly insane.
The NRA is a group of citizens that asked them to represent their views. It is clear that other citizens want to restrict their rights. Don't blame the NRA, it is you fellow citizens. Don't blame the Manufacturers, you probably own stock in them and they are in business to make money for owners or citizens. Teachers, Fire, Police all invest their pensions in them, so stop trashing them. We have a right to have the same gun that the crazy kid can steal or buy of the street. Why should I not be allowed to have the same gun that the criminal or crazy person has. The kid wouldn't have killed with a gun if I was locked up. He wouldn't have walked if she locked up her car keys and the kid wouldn't have gotten in a bank or court in that town because they have a person that is armed and a threat to anyone walking in with a gun.
I do blame the NRA leaders who also oppose closing the loopholes of gun shows that don't require background checks for people buying guns. If the NRA leaders really don't represent the views of the majority of it's members, Then the NRA needs new leaders.
Movefeasts...what do u think the loopholes are are at the gun shows? You heard this on the news. Have you ever been to one? And piers is an idiot. Let your guests speak.
Nothing will ever stop people from killing people, take away one device another will fill the void. Humans have been improvong on the ways to kill each other since Cain killed Able. While the hot topic is banning guns and controlling who gets them what are we going to do to curb the top 5 things that kill kids (fireams are number 6) Lead the ban on 5 gallon buckets, and motor vehicles.
What about the GUN MANUFACTURERS? Who is interviewing them? What is their responsibility? They make how much money on gun sales? Is that not what this is all about? Who funds the NRA?
You don't get it at all. The people have the right to be armed.
Under all of your ideas the only people with the guns I can't buy are the crazy children of adults that have them, like police and other people that will end up still owning them, like all the criminals.
If I owned a shop in LA when the riots occurred I would want to be the owner with the Assault weapon that deterred the mob which decided to burn the businesses on the other side of the street that night.
Only legal gun owners will comply with any law. The criminals don't and won't follow any law and the crazy kid will still steal his friends or family's guns regardless of any law.
The issue is making people lock their guns up and can we make a law that keeps the guns out of the hands of crazy people not restricting our rights to bear arms. We should be allowed to buy any weapon some kid can steal off his police officer dad and allowed to own a weapon that can defend against a group. I am a sailor and a hand gun will not stop pirates from robbing you, but two men with assault weapons works every time so they choose another boat.
The people of US today (Friday) stood for a minutes silence for the victims; the NRA on the other hand...took another "Shot"!
That "shot" by the NRA sounded like "let's protect our school children with trained, armed guards". In all likelihood Barrack Obama's children attend school protected by the Secret Service armed with fully automatic weapons, the kind that are illegal for ordinary Americans to use. I heard all the gun control advocates saying in 'Piers Morgan Tonight' show saying don't do that, don't do that, don't protect our children by providing them trained, armed police.
Look at all these scared sheeple braying about the "scary guns". Hey piers, how bout figuring out the difference between military and civilian weapons. THEY ARE NOT MACHINE GUNS!!! what a lying moron.
It's an irrelevant argument. The M-16 is semi-auto or burst, not full auto, and burst is rarely if ever used. If you want to kill a lot of people you stay on semi and use accurate fire, two or three shots per target. Point being, semi-auto is more deadly than full-auto, which the military learned after Vietnam.
I do not agree with everything that the NRA said but the point he made about all iof the security around politicians, concerts and the president are valid points but our children are left unprotected in our schools and nothing has ever been done about it but put up a sign like the sign will protect them or stop a crazed individual from entering and harming them..That is not protection for our children!
Well more guns in school won't protect them, teachers should go on strike till all automatics are removed from everywhere in US. And the guy that heads the NRA is the top salesman for guns so how can he start any discussion on gun control? The President should bypass him in any discussions, also the NRA man said Presidents...are protected by guns, well read on...
Well these 4 were shot while serving Presidents.
James A. Garfield
John F. Kennedy were all shot by guns.
These others were nearly assassinated or had serious/credible threats made against them.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Harry S. Truman
John F. Kennedy
Ronald Reagan (Ronald Reagan, was seen by the world being shot) was very lucky to survive.
George H. W. Bush
George W. Bush
These two are rumoured to have been assassinated...
Zachary Taylor (Source Wikipedia).
Warren G. Harding
So piers is using YouTube as his primary source of info? Lol...hey piers, remember getting sacked for lying about the military abusing combatants?
So the NRA's "meaningful contribution" is to suggest Congress put a police officer in EVERY school in America (like that's even possible) and to offer a "School Shield" security training program???? Really???? Even if you turned our schools into armed fortresses would that prevent the next mass murder with an AR at a mall or movie theater or church or business???? And couldn't a shooter just wait for school to be let out and start shooting kids in the parking lot? I mean seriously, this is ridiculous. I love my ARs but there is no civilian purpose for them other than recreational shooting and the cool factor of them. You can hunt with a bolt action rifle, you can defend your home with a shotgun or pistol. You don't need an assault rifle. I know they're like awesome adult lego sets, but our hobby is not worth any more innocent lives.
Back in the days when plane hijacking was a problem |rchie Bunker suggested the solution was to hans everyone a gun when they got on an airplane, and then collect them when you get off; there will always be more good guys than bad guys. 30m years ago everyone laughed because Archie was a popular baffoon. CNN should find that clip and play it next to the NRA guy.
Did the NRA not know that the video games and movies are shown all over the world? Those games and movies are not just seen here in the US. If it was just due to the games and movies we would be seeing these kinds of mass shootings all over the world.
The misleading footage of the ar15 tonight: thenadd for the ssr15 stock, a not factory stock to BUMPFIRE. The rifle, simulating a full auto, NO MANUFACTURER SELLS THIS STOCK ALREADY MOUNTED. Its a 400 dollar aftermarket atock. So the lies continue, the rifle in the video is still one pull one shot, ,the stock pushed the to front viberates the entire rifle to keep rapid fire. Damn you guys are desperate.
Piers calls the AR15 a machine gun. IT'S NOT A MACHINE GUN YOU @SSHOLE.
Its not the same gun the military uses.
I'm kinda curious about the national registry for those with mental illness. If that is done, how will the average person be able to identify them from others. Would the NRA propose to label them in some way. Perhaps a tattoo on their forearm or a patch on their jackets? Also this new volunteer militia or police force that is proposed to be at schools, how would the average person be able to differentiate them from other parents or a potential psychopath? Perhaps they could wear some sort of identifying uniform. A common jacket or shirt of universal color so that they would be recognizable nation wide. How about brown for a color? Wait... Something about all this sounds historically familiar.
What we need to focus on here is WHY ARE THESE TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS SO VIOLENT? Where are they learning how to gun-up with extra ammo and kill everyone in sight? Is it the violent video games where the kids play out a role where they gun-up with extra ammo and kill everyone in sight?
Take away the violence from these childrens young developing minds.
I love how pierce shows a video of a fully automatic ar 15, which is illegal; to portray the weapon as a killing machine. How many gun deaths in the US are caused by assault rifles. He says they are only for commiting mass murders; with 4 million of them owned by Americans dont you think we would see one everyday if that was the case.
It appears your good fortune has gone to your head. It's lovely that you have an opinion about how Americans should live but keep in mind that your British perspective, shall we say, is hardly something the US should take seriously. Please tone it down, Dear Boy, your insults are inappropriate and not at all welcome. Remember, as one ages it is most important to preserve your dignity.
This debate should not be about guns. Anyone with half a brain cell knows that its individuals who are killing innocent people. So the question should be how do you stop them. If people want to find someone to blame then we should start with the shooter who has obvious mental issues. Then you have the media people like Piers Morgan who keep giving these idiots fame and giving the next whack job ideas about being famous. Then the parents who obviously did something wrong in teaching their child right from wrong try shutting the tv off getting them off the internet be involved in your childs life. If we start fixing the core of this society we can prevent further bloodshed. If we take guns from honest law bidding americans then the only ones who will have guns are the criminals other than law enforcement and military. Everyone needs to remember guns dont kill people people kill people so stop blaming the gun.
No one is blaming the gun, only the ability of crazy people to easily obtain them. It's hard to legislate against insanity, much easier to regulate guns. At least it should be.
No one is blaming the gun, only the ability of crazy people to easily obtain them. It's hard to legislate against insanity, much easier to regulate guns. At least you would think.
Until you can figure out how to deal with the individuals "problems" wouldn't you much rather them show up at a school with a kitchen knife instead of an assault rifle? It's ridiculous that this even needs to be debated.
the guns are already out there and they will get them if they want. So its a mute point about putting a ban on anything. so lets fix the problem. And yes I would rather have a gun on my side just incase I run into that one idiot who tries to become famous for a mass shooting because I will not be a victim
How about if he had used a vehicle to run over groups of kids waiting for a bus or used one of any number of formulas of readily available substances to make an incendiary device or a bomb to kill even more children?
It was reported that Nancy Lanza's guns were for "protection." Many keep mentioning how they want guns for protection or that people will find a way to get guns if they want guns, so they should not be banned. Your guns are not going to protect you, when someone like Adam Lanza gets ahold of your gun that was supposed to protect you, whether he was welcomed in your house or illegally entered. You have to sleep at some point and cannot stand guard constantly. And the argument about what if he used a car or some other device does not make sense. That is like saying everyone will die of natural causes, so why do anything to prevent death, why go to the doctors, why have surgery, why exercise, why eat healthy...we have to do something. Maybe a ban will not stop everyone from getting an AR-15, but if it stops one person who should not have had it, isn't that effective? Maybe the person will come up with another way to attack, but at least they will not have this way anymore! I wish that Nancy Lanza would have been able to protect herself (and remember, it was reported that she frequented a gun range, so she had some experience), but she was unable to protect herself by having these guns in her home.
You're right... banning guns isn't going to solve the problem immediately because there out there everywhere so lets just forget about it then. There's no point in looking to the future and maybe implementing a plan starting today so that maybe one day things finally begin to turn around. We did this in Canada. We banned certain types of weapons and make it illegal by a certain date to posses them. We even compensated the owners to turn them in to be destroyed. There is something that can be done to curb this trend.
There is a reason I am not living in Canada. Freedom. We left your almighty queen we dont want that kind of rule. Here the govrnment is suppose to be ruled by the people and for the people. And yes in the last decade or so the government has gone way over the line. Here is why it is so important for us to keep our guns to protect us from those who want to hurt us and to prevent the government from getting to strong. So you Canadians and those who are naitves of the UK like Piers here let us be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes I do know the meaning of freedom. I can walk in the streets here and I don't have to worry that someone will shoot me!
I feel quite free. We don't have any laws that are restricting me from living my life the way I want to. I would be more concerned if our government didn't take action to keep me, my family and my children safe.
So you are dependent on your government thats not free so do you wait for your mayor to wipe you after using the bathroom? I am talking about something you will never understand. Why? Because you never had it. You always lived under a monarchy so you need to stop talking about things that you dont understand and dont concern you. True freedom is about being an individual and living how you choose not how the government or some nosey neighbors tell you to be.
I've not in my lifetime been impacted by any unreasonable law or rule so I don't know what you think you have or can do that I can't, except for one... and that's the topic at hand.
The "Assault Weapons" already in this country will be around for 100 years or more even if no more are ever imported or manufactured. A ban however will insure that we have a thriving black market in military style weapons that are smuggled in!
There's enough graves already filled with gun victims in US, NRA's solution is to fill "many more"... because that's what they're saying & that's what they'll end up doing. And how is it that NRA spokesman today blamed everything & everyone even the kitchen sink...instead of blaming the true guilty, "Themselves"!
Arming cops at schools is not the answer because what "IF"? one or more of these NRA school guardsmen went "Loopy" themselves with an AR15?
What then? NRA? Will you just go on saying there's too many mad guys among us?
PS. There is...too many mad among you. Now bulldoze your guns of all kind.
PPS. To Walmart Corporate & all the other sellers of death..."Be Truly Ashamed"!
Keep pushing the lies piers....how pathetic. It won't be soon enough when u get sacked again.
the nra was right on. congress, president, hollywood bo backers, professional athletic coaches, all state elected officials have protection – why not schools? my heart goes out to newtown coomunity and families – it is horrid but did we create the madman that did this. if his parents are like most today when he we was able to sit up they placed a computer in hand and probably barely out of diapers a slew of video games. wake up america the computer has no emotion- such as crying, joking, laughter, hugging, crying etc., therefore we have created a generation of young and all for that matter emotionless people. the next you eat out look around – no one is talking to each other – fork in one hand and iphone i the other texting. the computer is a babysitter and we have a genius. where is the media from the left when abortion is the topic (quite because they are all pro-choice). thousands of real little ones are terminated every day where is the discussion on that! yes i am a 67 year old mother, gun owner and nra member, carry a concealed weapons license and hunt. THERE NEEDS TO BE A BROAD DISCUSSION ON ALL AREAS NOT JUST GUNS Piers! the other reason you are in this great country is because taxes are lower than in the UK!
Piers, would you go into a school with a gun with the intent to commit mass murder if there were armed guards or armed teachers?
Hey piers...what about the latest stats from your own p@ssified country? Seems gun violence has escalated there recently. What an @sshole!
I don't understand what's going through the brains of these people who thinks solving Americas gun problem is by arming more people. Yeah, let's arm the teachers now so one day when one of them has a mental breakdown they pull out their gun and start firing on their students... and then after this happens a couple times maybe we will start arming the children to protect themselves.
America needs to learn that you have to respond to these situations by making changes. Image if there were no security changes post 9-11... how many more planes would have been flown into buildings? Pre 9-11 you could board an airplane with a box cutter and today you can't even get through airport security with a bottle of water. Annoying... but look at the impact this has had. These slaughters are just going to keep happening unless people start being realistic about this and make the changes that need to be made.
It blows my mind that military style machine guns were ever allowed to be sold to public to begin with.
What a complete imbecile! These are NOT machine guns. Maybe you should do a little research before making a fool of yourself.
It's not a pump action shot gun either that only holds 3 rounds at a time. Why does the ordinary person need to own one of these things... because it's a cool hobby?
Your ignorance is showing. My Remington pump holds eight rounds. A little more research and you start to look better.
I presume your an American then... because 3 is the limit here in Canada. Why you ask... to control things like this from happening.
Some people don't love guns as much as you apparently do.
This debate should be for americans only. Piers has no business talking policy about anything to do with america nor do Canadians. You have enough problems north of the border so let us deal with our own.
I am a Canadians and do agree with you. Piers should calm down and I have no business with your "major problem" with "guns." I'll wait until something changes for the better before I go back in the States. I have a feeling they'll be a decline in the population in the States if you continue killing each other like that.
Every country has it's problems but I can tell you our schools aren't becoming one of the most dangerous places to be. CNN was showing last night the company selling bullet proof inserts for children's backpacks.. I mean seriously? You know you have serious problems when you have to send your children to school with bullet proof backpacks. Let's keep the guns on the street and just give our kids body armour. Great idea. Maybe I don't have any business debating this not being American but I can tell you that it personally sickens me seeing this happening all the time.
I took the words out of my mouth. I am a man and a retired teacher and can't imagine going to work with a concealed gun. I was a teacher because I wanted to teach, not a policeman!
Agree... just boggles my mind. While they are at it they should arm teenage kids working at movie theatres too.
Marc and JR991 just because you are jealous of our freedoms doesnt give you the right to tell me how to live. I live with guns they have uses if you are not intelligent enough to understand that or wait your not your Canadian.
Not jealous at all, happy to live in a safer environment in Canada.
I'm not telling you how to live... I'm simply saying I don't understand why anyone needs to own a gun capable of such tragedy. Guns do have uses, yes. I use mine for hunting. I don't need to take a handgun to the grocery store with me to protect myself... that's not the world we live in here in Canada. If you feel in danger and the need to arm yourself to go about your daily life and you are okay with that then all the power to you.
I have been robbed at gun point twice in my life Both in Canada first in 1989 in Windsor then in June 2011 in Winipeg so dont tell me Canada is safer
Somebody getting robbed at gunpoint didn't bring us into this discussion I don't believe. You're going to run into that in certain neighbourhoods anywhere in the world.
American only: Quote: "..... if you are not intelligent enough to understand that or wait your not your Canadian."
Before accusing anyone of being unintelligent, you should learn how to write cohesively and punctuate. Also it's "you're" not "your". And as for being held up at gunpoint twice in Canada, I don't believe you – something like that would have been national news, it's so rare.
Maybe if kids got to learn about powerful weapons without actually owning one, they wouldn't go around killing at random. You're talking about the USA, where they're brought up on Guns, and always have been."
Mr. Morgan, I understand the culture you come from does not allow individual freedoms. I was an honorary special constable in your home country. So I understand your frame of reference for your abject fear of firearms. It seems to cause you a great deal of angst. They do have the same opportunities in the UK that they have here and you were quite famous there.
Now, since you are so opposed to firearms, why are you plying your skills on us , uncivilized heathens? Why do you not go and live in a country that is more inline with your way of thinking? We are not worth your time and trouble. Why do you insist on remaking the United States into the UK? You are already a citizen of a gun free country. Why make us into the UK when we fought to free ourselves from the UK? Separation anxiety?
Do you own a car? In America? Of course you do. Does it go fast? Why would you want a car that can go fast and looks cool? Fast cars are dangerous. Any speed over 20 mph increases your risk of great bodily injury exponentially. So does your car exceed 20 mph? Do you realize how dangerous that is? So you daily put yourself and others at risk of great bodily harm. Maybe you should focus your efforts towards mandatory governors for vehicles that would cap speeds at 20 mph, purely for safety reasons. While you are at it, advocate for cars to be made much bigger and heavier to make surviving the inevitable MVA safer.
Lol! Now that is good advice for piers. If someone handed him a gun, he'd probably run screaming like a teenage Justin Beiber fan.
First,, I'm a woman. I grew up being terrorized by a father who frequently terrorized my mother and siblings with his guns. I've looked down a barrel of a double barreled shotgun pointed at my face. So yes, if find guns scary.
I suggest that men find another way to try to prove they're men other than playing with guns.
Did Santa forget to bring you a toy train or something.
Cars are made for transportation. These guns have no purpose whatsoever expect killing people en masse.
"except" killing people en masse.
Ever hear of target shooting, sporting, etc? I'm sure these "scary guns" make you uncomfortable. Just keep living in your mom's basement and you'll be fine.
Guns are not toys, and target shooting is no justification for having these weapons.
Sorry buddy...I disagree. If you're too scared to own a gun, that's your business. Just keep your silly, anxiety-ridden ideas away from my rights.
What gives you the hubris to infringe my freedom. At least Morgan has an excuse, he is from the UK. What is your excuse?
Ok cars have a purpose so why are there cars sold that can go 200 miles an hour there is no logical reason why anyone needs that then. If you start taking away the americans right to chose what they want where will it end. Already being told that I have to wear a seat belt I am an adult I know the risks. Laws are something we need and yes there are some laws on guns that need addressing but banning is not one of them. laws are there to protect its citezens from harm from others. This also means they have a right to protect themselves. With what and how is up to them. Make stronger back ground checks get rid of loop holes and it will make it a little more difficult for bad people to get the guns. But be sure if they want a gun they will find one.
First,, I'm a woman. I grew up being terrorized by a father who frequently terrorized my mother and siblings with his guns. I've looked down a barrel of a double barreled shotgun pointed at my face. So yes, I find guns scary.
He is not worth your time
Sounds like you need to lay on a couch and talk to someone, Girlfriend. Get a grip or just stay in your basement. On second thought, that Lanza guy just sort of hung out in his mum's basement and that didn't work out so well for his mental health.
I am a Canadian and proud to be especially now that I realize how many people have guns in the States. You have a major problem in you hands. When the NRA say that more people should be armed (retired teacher here) I picture what goes on in many games I play. So this is the picture that I have in my mind of the USA in the near future. More people with guns, more fighting just like in those games.
"No more visits in the States and I am sorry because I enjoyed traveling your way."
NRA must be defeated by the people of the USA.
I am also thankful to be Canadian. The only events like these making our news every 2 or 3 months is because of our neighbours to the south.
NRA is an american organization if you dont like it change the channel up in Canada
I would but there's nothing else airing on our networks.
We don't like your version of the NRA in America either
The NRA is just interested in making money, and don't give a damn about anyone else...especially are children!!!!!!!!!!
Over 38,000 died this your in car accidents. Over 10,000 by drunk drivers. Let's ban cars that go more than 65 mph and restrict ownership to only registered dealers.
The car is used to kill more people than the gun. Most murders with a gun are done by criminals or crazy people. They don't follow the law. Try telling the unions to protect their members with armed teachers, retired military or police. The unions have plenty of money and don't spend it to protect their members.
The Vice President and the President of the NRA should be ashamed of themselves. It is outregeous the way the NRA was blaming the media and refused to addressed the most important issue assault weapons( weapons of mass destruction) The Vie President sounds like unintelligent, guns killed people. Gun plus mental is equal mass murders and gun minus mental illness is equal to safety. The NRA is responsible for all these mass murders. The NRA is talking about volunteer arm people, this means they have non plans helping financially. Imagine the Native Indians were arm with these military style weapons when their lands were taken away from them.)
The media started the tirade before the scene was even secured. The NRA at least waited a period of time to allow the families to grieve. The anti gun folks started hollering from the top of their transmitters before the last shell hit the ground practically.
"NRA at least waited a period of time to allow the families to grieve." If the NRA had been reasonable in the past, those military style guns probably wouldn't have been in the hands of the killer of 20 kids and 6 adults in this massacre. How many will be killed next time someone decides to do the same? Most of the media have been trying to help people to get ready for the future, how to teach the kids to cope with those situation so that they will not be marked for the rest of their lives, show that we have compassion... I can't believe that you are supporting the NRA. Glad to be a Canadian.
To Mark – "I can't believe that you are supporting the NRA. Glad to be a Canadian"
Glad you are proud of your national association. I am too and my country allows me real freedom. Does yours? Want real stats? If they don't delete the truth on this blog google John Lotts website and get the real facts on gun violence.
"I'd rather be judged by six than carried by twelve" – Anon..
What's wrong with guns in school my brother and my niece go to school where cops are there everyday and after all after school events and this is been going on since 911 yet nobody's been hurt by the gun Delaware and nobody is terrified of the gun the cops know what they're doing and this is a school where 1 of the victims of the Virginia Tech shooting went to school
"Another thing Pierse. I know high power guns fire rapid-fire, but they have been know to jam, if not well oiled, and even if they are, it's still rapid 'short-bursts' you can get away with, otherwise it's hot!!"
I'll answer your question Peirs. The AR15 will shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger. Any semi-automatic rifle shoots the same way, the AR15 isnt any different.
lay down the guns or what makes us any different from warlords in Afghanistan or drug lords in Mexico?
we are devolving. who is going to defend us from the NRA?
Looks like USA is a barbaric country where one needs guns and semi automatics to keep safe ....this really speaks a lot about what this supposed most developed country is.
If USA sets this model, tell me how is the world supposed to look upto USA. wake up and ban guns and save your children
I agree with you. I am a Canadian and decided to stop visiting the States until it's safer for my family.
thankyou for not coming if you cant understand what the true arguement here is. Its freedom. Once you let the government tell you how to live you loose your freedom so enjoy your country and please take piers back with you he is an idiot.
Yes freedom to kill! Look at those games kids play involving guns and you have the picture of USA in the future. It does concern me because not a lot of good news about the States lately and we are neighbors.
Then why is it that right here in my small town of about 400 in the U.S. there is 15 Former Canadians who left when your government told them they had to put their weapons in an armory and they were only aloud a certain number of them. One of them has antique firearms that were passed down thru his family. They gave up their Canadian ties and citezenship so they could be free. So not everybody up there did or stil do agree with you and yet When I was there last in Winnipeg I was robbed at gun point why because the crooks still have there guns. And oh yeah what do you know that was June 2011 when I was helping a friend move to the States.
Crazy. Moving somewhere just to keep a gun.
Sorry but I had to laugh. Exactly, move so you can have a gun! I hope those people don't have kids. I wouldn't move there even if I didn't have kids. Many areas in need of change or it'll only be less safe to live in the USA unless you like living with guns.
Bless your hearts, you Canadians just don't get it. America is all about FREEDOM. There is NO OTHER COUNTRY on earth that has the wonderful FREEDOMS we enjoy here. Please remember, many many brave soldiers died so that I and my family could enjoy those FREEDOMS we have. It is quite inappropriate for you or any other NON-AMERICAN to judge our system. To do so would spit on the honor and memory of those who have died for our country. If you don't like the way we live here then do us all a favor and stay right where you are and keep "spit" your opinion to yourself.. We'd like that just fine. I have a safe full of guns. I collect them. They have value. I enjoy shooting them. What is your problem?
Tell me what freedoms you have that Canadians and other Countries dont have with the except to carrying a gun on you to go grocery shopping incase you get mugged.
We don't need that freedom... I don't want that freedom. Our Government has done a great job on cracking down on illegal guns and they are taking them off the streets. I feel much more free living my life in this environment then feeling the need to carry a weapon because their is a good chance I might get mugged today. I just don't understand how you can like life like that everyday.
Regardless of which country you live in, it is a fact that the "bad guy" is going to get a weapon. The only thing that happens then is a helpless citizen has no way to defend he/herself or their family. In fact, your own Trudeau has stated publicly that Canada's long gun registry "has been a failure and he would not reinstate it" (1). You never see the media talk about those situations where lives have been saved because someone was armed and defended themselves and their loved ones, only about the criminals. We have the freedom to protect ourselves – what more valuable right can there be? Even law enforcement here encourages citizens with proper training and certification so they can protect themselves and their loved ones.
Piers acting like a school yard bully during your "town hall" interviews accomplishes NOTHING. A discusiion is just that, people communicating ideas. Not you yelling at someone when you don't get the answer you want. That's not a discussion.
I personally think that Piers Morgan is doing CNN a major disservice. I understand what side he is on, but he is distorting the truth, making him, and his views, and easy target for the gun lobby.
I raised two educated video game playing rational men all by myself both who grew up strong and sure, both motivated to earn good livings and actively participate in the society which they live in and this happened without ever thinking that I needed a gun to do so.
I am not impressed with what Wayne LaPierre said, but I am equally unimpressed by Piers Morgan and Geoffrey Canada had to say. Each side seems to focus mostly on a single aspect – Ban assault weapons on one side, armed guards at schools on the other. The truth is the only thing that has a chance of working is a multi-tiered approach incorporating gun regulation, school security, mental health changes, and other factors.
We already have laws on the books that restrict guns. Laws do not stop behavior. Please correct me if I am mistaken. We have laws against murder. Does that stop murders? We have laws against burglary yet we have still have burglaries. Do you see where I'm going with this?
Roger – I see where you are going. I think what people are looking for in the way of laws is decreasing ACCESS to some of the more powerful weapons. I think people realize that bad people are going to break laws. I can sit there and wish all day long about killing my neighbors with a rocket launcher, but if I cant get my hands on a rocket launcher, it wont happen.
Piers please go back to the UK. You are not welcome here.
Hey shotgun is more dangerous than an assault weapon but I don't hear you calling for a ban on shotguns learn about the differences of guns first then you can carry on intelligent conversation
I had the highest respect for Piers Morgan till now, I have enjoyed his interviews in the past. I am not a gun owner, don't care to be. But I have listened to Piers be nasty, short and downright rude with this topic. Lost me! Channel Changed!
Yea, he has acted like a complete @ss tonight.
CNN needs to fire him.
Relocating police to be stationed at schools is NOT the same "adding more guns".
We NEED to put cops in every single school AND take away every single automatic, semiautomatic, or any type of weapon with the word "automatic" in it away!!!!
From Police and military too.
Your views on guns in American are correct. Keep fighting !
Second the opinion; Pier, there many more Americans that agree with you now. So keep up the good work and someday soon, we can change these gun laws.
Yes, Piers, keep up the good work. My portfolio of gun stocks is skyrocketing with all the hype and hysteria your gun grabbing bloviating has created.
gotta love Piers, just cn't stop telling lies to sell his name, a youtube video of a fully auto M4 shortbarreled weapon that CURRENT LAWS prevent anyone except Law Enforcement or GOV. Agencies from owing even with an ATF Tax-stamp. The man is really pitiful.
All through history there has been mass murders,a long time before guns.I have been a NRA member since I was about 10 hunter/sport shooter and gun collector.Like the old saying goes guns dont kill people, people kill people. These talk show maggots are looking for ratings, they dont stand for anything. They wanted to ban airplanes after sep 11,and you know they were scared and went to the gun shop.I say arm all law abiding people and that would stop the (MASS) part of it.
Piers Morgan, I would welcome the opportunity to come on your show and tell my story of how a man high on PCP entered my home, grabbed a carving knife from my kitchen, made his way to the top of the stairs just outside of my bedroom, and how i stopped him cold in his tracks with my legally owned gun. This was an event I will never forget. Hats off to the real men who created the second amendment. Because of them, my family and myself are still here today to talk about this epic event. I doubt that you will give me the time of day because you are too narrow minded, and hellbent on self preservation. It makes me wonder what your true agenda really is. Please respond.
Did you need a handgun or a semi-automatic weapon to make your family safe?
They have to protect themselves from everyone else running around with guns. Thats why whenever this happens more people run right out to their local department store buy a firearm. I'm surprised they don't start selling these things at the pharmacy... I mean you can go to Wallmart and go down aisle 9 for your loaf of bread and then head over to aisle 23 to pick up an assault rifle.
And people blame the problem on the mental health of the individual and suggest the solution is to give them "help". Explain to me how you can search for these individuals living in your neighbourhoods and attempt to help them. Does assembling a task force to spend day and night searching for these people seem easier then simply not making these weapons so accessible and easy to get?
So, did you kill him?
after reading these posts, I am appalled at some of the responses to this forums., Are you all adults or teenage punks? The innocent lives of people are dying everyday because of your 2nd ammendment. How can you live with all this violence in your country. It is terrible, and your politicians should be ashamed that they are bought off by the NRA.
The second amendment is not killing people if you look at violent crime. not just gun crime. In countrys where everyone has guns the violent crime is actually lower yes gun crime is higher but over all violent crime per capa is higher. So why be a victim when I should have the right to defend my self. The problem is not guns the guns are just a means. You look at the uni bomber he killed with the mail. John wayne gazy never used a gun. I will never let the ones I care about be a victim.
Point your finger – you've got three looking back.....Before your judge our country look at your own:
If you use the logic Piers Morgan uses we should outlaw Hummers. They are weapons of war. They look just like the ones the military uses, so they must be immediately outlawed.
Hello, Hummers do not kill people!
it is not about abolishing the 2nd Amendment. NO, it is about REVISING the 2nd amendment!! don't allow anymore automatic weapons. anything with the word "automatic" must be banned! also put a cop in every single school! we are in need of jobs anyway.
You mean no more automatic transmissions? Automatic teller machines? Automatic vending machines? No autoinjector for atropine for phosphate poisoning? Really? What other words don't you like?
I totally agree with you Piers. I am a disabled Vietnam Vet and served in combat. I have never owned a gun. With 300 million guns out there, guess I am in the minority. I have watched Anderson and you for a week. Tears have come every time I see one of the children pictures, or listen to their families, Especially the girl named Grace McDonnald....... These types of guns are for soldiers, never civilians. i was outraged when I heard the guy from NRA, who gave such a self serving statements today. This is serious and you give it the passion that is REQUIRED. Today another shooting I believe in PA, In order to change this, we need to have a lobby like the NRA does so that government officials dont fear a backlash. The families in Conn will assure this happens I have faith in them. They are strong, Arguing with the NRA will just get them angry, and they are only concerned with gun sale profits. We need legislation and serious people like Murphy from Conn. Be strong but you might come across better if less heated, but not less passionate. Your buddy, Richard
None of the weapons used in the shootings were automatic.
it was a semiautomatic, the same thing as i was saying, if there is a word "automatic" (which the word semiautomatic has) BANNED IT!!!!!
Semiautomatic means every time the trigger is pulled a round is fired. So we should also outlaw double-action revolvers then because they are semiautomatic. Every time the trigger is pulled a round is fired, generally not as fast as a semi-automatic gun, unless of course you're very skilled.
If automatic is so fearful we should outlaw autopilot, automatic coffee makers, ............
It appears your fearful of words. So it the press, which is generally uniformed, calls something automatic you "automatically" believe them. I very fearful of the people who "automatically" believe what is feed to them by the press.....
if we have to then YES! banned that double revolver gun u were talking about. Also the guy did use an automatic gun! it said in every single website and news channel, he just held the trigger and sprayed 30 round of bullets.
I'm not saying banned all weapons, but by keeping an automatic weapon such as an AK-47 and say that we can still prevent massacres is STUPID!!!
The press fed you a line and you believed it. The models of weapons that the shooter used were not "automatic". Once again the press is wrong and it can be proven they are wrong but some sheep will continue to "automatically" believe them. We have to use facts to have an open discussion about this issue. The fact is none of the weapons used in the shootings were automatic weapons.
a Bushmaster AR-15 is an AUTOMATIC WEAPON!! WOW please show me a website that says a Bushmaster AR-15 is NOT an automatic!
A true automatic weapon as defined by the US government requires a special license. A true automatic weapon fires rounds as long as the trigger is held, or until the magazine is empty. The problem is most people don't get that distinction, thanks again to the press. The Bushmaster used was a semi-automatic weapon. The shooter had to pull the trigger for every round he fired. No possible way to debate that. The press decided to call it automatic and you believe them.
Automatic weapons (machine guns like you see on tv, M16) are no longer manufactured and sold to civilians since 1986.
The Bushmaster AR15 that was used was a semi-auto, you have to pull the trigger everytime you want to shoot a bullet. It only fires as fast as you can pull the trigger.
The media keeps calling all AR15s automatic, they are not an automatic.
Actually there are many semi-automatic rifles that look like a normal hunting rifle but will shoot just as fast as an AR15, as fast as you can pull the trigger.
An automatic machine gun (M16) is like a Corvette with a v8..... 0-60 in 4 seconds
A semi-auto AR15 is like a Corvette with a 4 cylinder... 0-60 in 15 seconds , same as a Ford Fusion or Toyota Corolla.
Andrew as you requested here is a website that you can use to inform yourself: http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2012/12/17/bushmaster_ar_15_national_review_writer_says_it_s_not_that_powerful.html
It does a good job of explaining what you are not understanding with regards to automatic and high-power and more. Enjoy and educate yourself. The URL even seems to be written by someone is anti-gun but at least he admits the facts.
Oh yeah by the way I have a concealed weapons permit And no we don't have a waiting for handguns and there's no limit on how many I can buy in a month same with assault weapons because I've already had a background check done and concealed weapons permit holders don't commit a lot of crimes we are very law abiding citizens
Everyone need to stop criticizing NRA because guns are not the only weapon used for massive murders. Many people are been murdered with the use of poison, however with a cover up of cancer, therefore escaping prosecution. The criticism needs to start with respect for humanity, in which our leadership has proven none. We need to start with the Obamas because they lead with blood in their hands. They are killing our white children. Mrs. Obama murdered President Chavez and President Obama is helping with the cover up, however his lack of action against his wife is been covered up with a chain around his neck. Meanwhile, he is proving lack of respect for humanity by leaving members of the white race as well as white children exposed to be murdered to cover up that his wife is the most dangerous woman in American history. There Obamas are leading in hate and violence. There has been five massive shootings since the Obamas have been in office. The Arizona, the Church, the Movie Theater, the Mall, however in spite of the massive shooting, he has not taken his responsibility seriously until the public became outraged with the killing of the 20 children. Bush allowed the control of guns to expire, however Obama followed, therefore along with the NRA, he also has blood in his hands.
Geoffrey Canada said 'Let's put children first and not be concerned about these irrational..." I agree 100%!
Arm the teachers and administrators, but armed guards in schools and let's protect the children! Quit listening to the irrational politicians and news commentators. Parents, get your own carry permit and protect your children.
We can do this or we can just let the criminals have free reign. Do you really think making certain weapons illegal will keep criminals from obtaining them. We tried that once before and look what happen in the midst of the ban – Columbine.
Let me say this again Automatic Or semi automatic Or a pump Shotgun Is a hunting weapons Yes it is far more dangerous then any assault weapon if you don't know what you're talking about don't talk!!!
Piers you are a bully with your guests who have different views. Let them speak and finish answering the question you asked. You can counter after they finish or ask another question. The ex governor of Maryland, Paris Glendening, held a press conference displaying the ar 15 rifles collected from the streets. All the rifles on the table belonged to Maryland finest, the Maryland State Police. All were marked MSP. If the government representatives do this and lie to the public why would a gun owner trust the government? Every hear of Fast and Furious by the ATF.
There are something to think about:
Why all this mass shooting incidents always happened in some schools/college/university "Gun Free Zones" and never happened somewhere at Concealed Carry Permit Holders Conventions, NRA meetings or for example on the US Army
firing range where infantry company trains reflexive fire and everybody have loaded firearms?
Questions number two: Why during so-called “Green on Blue incidents” in Afghanistan the rouge Afghani soldier that decided to turn weapon on Americans capable to take maybe one or two guys (people who he managed to caught by surprise) but not 28 and after that he also goes down with bullet in his head? What prevents that rouge Afghani from shooting dozens? It is obvious he wants to take as many lives as he can…
Why the same soldiers (train professionals who shoot guns for leaving) start dying dozens when they were stripped from their firearms (Fort Hood shooting incident)?
Who finally stopped mass shooting in the Fort Hood? Gun control laws or good guy with the gun? I would really like to
hear your answers… But I hardly think so you will come up with something reasonable...
11b OEF/OIF veteran
One thing all the gun control advocates forget is that in and of themselves, no firearm, including of AR can comit a crime. I havean AR as well as several other firearms and not one of them has ever fired without myself or someone else pulling a trigger. They are incapable of planning or executing a crime by themselves. Mr. Morgan stated that "assault " weapons cause mass shootings ,that is not possible. That argument is like trying to ban the use of the internet because some nut case can learn to build a bomb online.
It is also true that police officers do not prevent crime unless they happen to be right on top of one while it is occuring, they respond to a crime. I would rather have the response time of a personnal protection firearm..............they are much faster.
I also have a ccw permit, but at this time feel no need to carry. If I do in the future, I fully intend to to protect myself and my family.
I am so sick of Piers Morgan trying to speak toward a subject he has little to NO knowledge of! Any gun owner that listens to this guy quickly realizes he has little grasp on the subject of firearms. The civilian version of the AR-15 by definition is not a machine gun! Stop calling it that as it is inaccurate! The legal version, semi- auto cannot fire 100 rounds a minute. Does he want to try to end school violence or ban the AR-15? It is clear that he wants to ban AR-15 and is not focusing on how to prevent future incidents such as Sandy Hook! His thoughts are that if we ban the AR we will stop the killing! I am afraid that it will not end with the banning of these styles of guns. He is enjoying being in the spotlight and knows his stance on the AR-15 will keep his ratings up and his show in the media mania. Oh and congrats Piers! Your show has done more for gun sales and placed more guns in America this last week than anything the NRA has done recently. Right now there is not an AR-15 style gun,.223 ammunition, or high capacity clips to be had in the entire country. Keep it up Piers and the gun manufactures will be putting you on the payroll! The banning of the AR-15 WILL NOT stop mass killings in this country! In the largest killing of school children in the US there was never a shot fired ( Bath, MI. 1927) So banning the semi-auto fired AR-15 is not going to solve the problem. There are other weapons (methods) that are much more lethal than the AR-15 and most likely would not be banned. The only other option is total, complete banning of ALL guns. Do we want the government rounding up all the guns in this country and turning them to scrap? I don't know that gun owners will ever stand by and let that happen in this country. SO Piers here is a chance to get yourself some knowledge on a topic you have little knowledge about, GUNS! Load your CNN film crew up on the private jet and fly out here to Wyoming and we will head out to the range (you have my email). You pick up the AR-15 with 100 rounds you attest can be fired in one minute and I will select one of my father's guns from 50 years ago. You can be the judge on the lethality of the two. I believe you are in for a surprise and will come to realize that banning AR-15 style rifles is NOT going to solve the problem of violence in this country. The Sandy Hook tragedy is something that we must learn from and take steps to make our schools as safe as possible for our children. We have had to do it at great cost in our airports and now it looks like we will have to take similar steps in our schools. I hope our government can protect us, they have never let us down before have they!
Banning the AR-15 is step one. We have to start somewhere. Here's a novel idea. Remove the weapons, cut down on the killing. No one can ever claim to stop it entirely, but if you take the ability to inflict massive collateral damage away, the "mass" killings WILL go away.
For those that want to ban guns. What is the end game? To what end do you want to ban inanimate objects? When I was 2-3 years old I remember stubbing my toe on something and being mad at the object I struck. Was it the couches fault I didn't pay attention to where I put my foot? No, it was mine.
Life is dangerous, it'll kill you for sure. You can only mitigate the ricks you have control over. You can not control everything though.
I am overweight. Is it pizza's fault? No, that's ridiculous. I made the choices to eat pizza, a lot of them.
Try to keep your eye on the ball, Roger. No one is saying all guns. Your logic is ridiculous.
You being overweight isn't causing a mass killing of innocent children is it? If you want to cause harm to yourself go nuts... you're not hurting anyone else.
The obesity problem is killing, just as sure as God made little green apples. Ask Michele O. How bad it is.
And there are calls for complete abolition of fire arms.
The only expertise that Michelle Obama has is murdering members of the white race. She murdered President Hugo Chavez and President Obama is helping her cover up the murder.
Did your couch have the ability to kill? Was your couch designed to kill? Smarten up. Yeah, life is dangerous. Problem is, with a gun death is guaranteed.
The NRA is a discrace to this country!!
Obviously, you are a retired. We are not disgrace in this country .we are law abiding citizen and not criminals. Have you ever thought about raising children a better homes and responsible parents. Ghee you are a moron. Not all NRA member psychopaths and murder.
Richard, there is no comparison with cars and guns, car is a necessity, guns are not. People deliberately go out and commit mass murders with these assault weapons. Ordinary people do not need guns. What are you afraid of if your these assault weapons are taken away? Are you afraid that the Native Indians are coming back for their land? A lot of blood were shed on these same lands. The spirits of the Indians are rooming these lands.
Indian Spirits? Lions and Tigers and Bears, O My! I think we should go back to the front loading, black powder, muzzle loading days. That's it. That's the solution to all this gun grabbing nonsense.
Nana So are you and Piers Morgan If you don't know what you're talking about don't talk about it If you want to learn ask questions I will help you figure it out
I have one gun and it is a family heirloom and it the only reason why I have it but, I do not agree that we must remove guns. I think that the 2nd admendment was written so that the citizens of America are not powerless against its own country. It also helps deter a foreign threat to the united states. If you remove guns then the government can do anything and it could also be catastrophic if a foreing country decides to invade. I am not saying that we would ever rebel violently with guns or that we have to rebel violently at all (peaceful talks, voting, and other peaceful options are always better) . I am just saying that if removed, we become powerless just like peasents were with kings.
I do think however that the shooting at the school is very bad and that measures need to be taken to prevent this from happening again. I think we should put a wall around the schools about 200-300 yards away and post a gate with guards and survalence the wall with cameras. I know this sounds harsh but children are r most precious gift and obviously this is a harsh world. We have been putting up walls and guards to protect things for a long time. Villages did it to protect people from animals, castles did to protect against people
I went to school like that had a chain link fence all the way around it it was like 7 or 8 feet high we never had a problem
Right, I really think that if something like that was inplace it could have at least detered him a little. Instead of taking guns and causing issues around the country lets try and figure out something we could do now to help prevent this from happening again. Because I really dont think taking guns is an answer even though I dont use them the second admendment was written for a reason.
Thank you Piers for being angry!!!! I am a mother of a 6 and 9 year old and live in CT. Although I am not a gun owner I believe in the right for people to own guns. However there is NO WAY I support or believe that people need to own guns that can massacre other humans in a matter of seconds or minutes. Over the last week our local police have been on occasion parked at our school parking lot and even my kids know they are the "good guys" their presence unnerves my children. I do not want to send my children to school as if I live in a police state so that a few can have unlimited access to weapons. Those children were my children.
A cop there last Friday might of helped If he saw the cop car He might not even a stopped why call the cops for help and have it take them minutes to get there when you could have 1 standing there if you don't believe in guns don't ever call 911 because that would make you a hypocrite because the cops are going to have guns
It's sad to think that the direction you're heading in is having armed guards at all schools in America. I just can't imagine living like this.
????? You did not read my post carefully enough. I do not own a gun.........believe people have a right to own them.......not the type that can massacre civilians especially 1st graders.......do not want to live in a police state.......we can make our country safer in other ways.
This is the other Mary. These guns are way to big for these people to be playing with, they are not toys . Not for use in Our home land. You all making comments should have some respect for this woman
Yes, thank you Piers for your anger!! The value of my portfolio of gun stocks has skyrocketed thanks to all your misplaced bloviating about those mean, nasty, evil, black "assault" guns. Keep up the good work, mate! Maybe I'll be able to retire a few years earlier if you keep up this tirade.
I am against guns, however in today's society, we need guns for self defense. Too many cruel people in America and it starts with our leadership, the Obamas. They are murdering members of the white race.
So if criminals start using missiles then you should be allowed to arm yourselves with missiles to?
It already happened a little over 11 years ago. 19 criminals turned a jet into a missile. Yes self defense is a base human instinct. If someone starts punching you, are you going to just soak up the hits?
Thats correct... and appropriate action was taken to make darn sure that it's a lot harder to accomplish today. Same approach is needed to prevent these tragedies. Not saying ban all funs or take away your right to own a gun. But a trend is occurring here with the assault rifles being because of their ability to cause mass deaths. So, what is the problem with taking action against this one particular firearm at the very least. Spending billions of dollars to secure public locations with armed guards doesn't seem like a reasonable approach.
Sorry all I hit the notify box and got all your emails. I really didnt want them so I unchecked the box LOL. BAN all assult weapons is all I say....... Teachers with guns is not the answer. Self Serving People like the NRA shouldnt speak what they believe, before they think what they are saying. The NRA guy was only trying to sell more guys, not seek a solution. We have a culture of violence. Movies all seem to have violence, video games are an outrage. When you see the suffering of those parents, pictures of those children, and think that again today in PA another shooting. We need to prevent this by rethinking lots of things, and not let the NRA people shove us around...... Right On Piers. for one guy that believes your outrage is justified.
I wonder if all the guys here defending the NRA are on board with LaPierre suggesting that violent video games be banned.
Sure, MoveFeasts, let's ban violent video games and the violence promoted by Hollywood.
After all, if you want to put restrictions on the 2nd Amendment, why not restrictions on the 1st as well?
Guns have been around for a long time. These mass shootings are a more recent phenomenon. The one big difference I can see is our culture. Broken homes, a de-valuation of human life, de-sensitization to violence due to our entertainment industry, etc.
Why does Piers spend little to no time discussing that aspect of the issue?
No I don't agree with that Video games or movies I have nothing to do with it But if you like them It shows you're not very peaceful It shows you like watching the pain of others as far as cops in school I have family to go to school where there are cops anytime that something going on at that school 1 reason why is because the cops families go to that's school too and it's been going on for years and nobody's been hurt yet
(sorry for my poor english) I have a question: if if, and if the "good" guy armed to protect the school, decide himself to shoot the kids, we might need a "better guy" to protect ourself against him, and then, we might need a "best guy" to protect ourself against them.... in fact, the wheel turns again....
Piers thank you again for all you are doing. We all need to rember what this is all about. There are many reasons/causes why a terrorist kills even children. But in the end they are empowered by the bullets from automatic weapons. Yes these are weapons of mass destruction that are killing our children. Step # 1 should be to stop selling them
Mary Pierce doesn't know nothing about guns Stopping them would do nothing They were not at Columbine They had pistols and a shotgun and if you want to hurt people is plenty of other things to use
I don't think most people would be so against an assalt weapons ban if they had a genuine trust in our government. The same people who are "up there" spouting what we need to do and how to do it are the same ones who spirited these same types of weapons across the border to Mexico. Who is holiding them responsible for those actions? Why trust morons like that to protect us?
an American citizen and I will do my best to band Mr Morgan from staying in the USA when it is clear he hate the USA
The hate and violence is happening under Obama's watch. It's interesting because their ultimate intent is to cause people to shed blood.
Sorry Vicky....Violence in this country happened WAY BEFORE Obama took office!
It hit the lowest while he is in office. Children.
OK...so pretty please..... tell me why this is our Presidents fault...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I find it highly coincidental that it started with the Arizona shooting, followed by the Church, the Theater, the Mall and America hit bottom when children were murdered. When evil leads, evil follows. The Obamas are highly destructive, deceptive evil people
OK..so now we are getting political......How about these statistics on the war in Iraq ...that Obama voted against!!!!!!!!!!
Some of these soldiers were a mere 17 years old.....As a grandmother of 6 that is still a BABY in my book!
US Soldiers that were killed 4488...not to mention all the babies in Iraq who we killed by ACCIDENT...or do not other countries babies matter to you!

I will do this due to her will not listen to reason or understand its the movies that are making our kids sick
In actuality, the movie was fiction, but it had a real, lasting effect: some children were diagnosed with PTSD after watching the film.
I have a solution to whether we need guns in schools-lets ask the kids!
Really? Please tell me this said with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Do you ask children other important questions?
Piers, this is not England. Larry King please come back.
There are a few schools in my area that have had armed security for years grade school and up no one ever had a problem with it and the kids never cared. the thing is kids only care or are bothered by things if the adults care or are bothered if the adults act like its normal then the kids dont care my cousins who had security when they were kids felt safer and also never thought once about some security guy with a gun. but i dont think games or anything like that is a problem i played grand theft auto when i was 10 im smarter than that. even if you ban assault weapons criminals will always get them no matter what or maybe they will get stronger ones just to prove a point
Wow, Medea Benjamin and Code Pink have finally come out of hibernation!
As I recall, Ms. Benjamin and her crew were granted regular appearances on the networks when George Bush was President. Code Pink was very visible in our media as they protested Mr. Bush and the wars. Despite Pres.Obama escalating the war in Afghanistan, killing innocent civilians via his drone war, and involving us in other conflicts around the world, Code Pink has been silent.
It seems Code Pink is anti-Republican rather than truly anti-war. Perhaps Piers could have asked Ms. Benjamin for her opinion of the obama drone wars, and why we have not seen protests of Mr. Obama from Code Pink like we saw when a Republican was in office.
Because Obama has exposed American to a war. His wife murdered President Chavez and he is helping her cover up the murder. Chavez is friends with Iran.
You know nothing about weapons a AR 15 is a m16 it is best used as a single one shot one kill weapon when modified to be fully auto it is a waste of ammo thats why the military witch im a part of changed it too a semi automatic weapon it is not very accurate as a fully automatic weapon
You keep regarding the the AR 15 as a machine gun that's far from accurate. However accurately you pointed out with modification it can be made into fully automatic. However it is illegal to own or posses a fully automatic weapon without a class 3 ffl endorsement. Which is next to imposible to obtain and even harder to afford if your middle class. You keep referring to loopholes to obtain firearms. For those less educated that's private to private sales me to you. And you keep referring. To the point that not one person can tell you what the purpose of owning a military style gun is. One word investment. Owning guns is a financial investment. Easily maintainable very easily liquidated with a high percentile of yearly added value. You could by a run of the mill AR last week for 650 dollars not that same gun is 1000. It's money you know that reason why anyone does anything.
I have read pretty much of what everyone has stated, but, one must understand something. The AR-15 is not a military weapon, it is a civilian version of the military M-16. Quite a differnce between the two.
Your are correct by saying that placing an armed guard in the schools is better then nothing, but, will the person be the first one to be taken out ? Will he have the time to pull his hidden, or, holstered weapon out before being shot, or will anyone be able to do it ? For one thing, nobody knows !
One thing we can agree on is that, one, the young fellow was probably mad at his mom for going away for two an a half days and leaving hi, at home. So he punished her for doing it, then to punish other individuals for having fun when he couldn't he took his anger out the way he thought would wake people up.
Peirs, you are the worst part of journalism that I have ever seen. You do not give anyone that thinks, or talks in a way that is different then what you are trying to present, or your own beliefs. GIVE PEOPLE A CHANCE TO TALK YOU IDIOT...............
The first Horseman of the Apocalypse is war, this is God's Judgment and punishment upon man for sowing wars and reaping wars in the heart's of men,and not sowing and reaping God's word in the heart's of men,in that wars are not of God but of men,as Galatians 6:7,says,Be not deceived,God is not mocked, for whatsoever man sows,he reaps.Man sows wars and reaps wars.God's word is good seed in the heart's of men, wars are bad seed in the heart's of men.Wars kill the innocent along with the guilty, including innocent children and fetuses, and the Bible says God doesn't kill the innocent, not even by mistake as men do in wars,God doesn't make mistakes, men do.So wars of the flesh with guns and bombs are not of God but of men,of the flesh and the devil, and ever since Eden, when Satan tempted man's flesh to sin the sin of pride. So wars are of the sin of pride,of man not putting God first, but himself first,as man at Eden.
Wow! A person mentions the "Rights of Man" and that the 2nd Admendment defends and protects the right to rebel and it will not be posted. Obvious that some do not want touchy subjects discussed, especially when it is mentioned that we are being led down a dangerous slope financially. It is really is censorship now, isn't it? We really are beyond hope.
By the way, the military M-16 when I was in, was made by the Mattel Corp.
Mattel has never made an M16 that's a myth. Colt made all of them till their patent ran out and the military bought it. Colt still builds M16A3s and FN build the carbine version M4
Piers, I hope you read this. You truely made your self sound stupid seconds ago yelling to have the answer how many bullets does an AR-15 fire a second. first off the only "experts" you talk to are anti gun. second if an AR-15 could fire 6 bullets a second than your shooter is a professional. A semi auto gun requires a trigger pull to release only one bullet. so yes if you could possibly pull the trigger 6 times a second then you could fire 6 bullets a second. i work closely with law enforcement and SWAT and still have never met a single human who can pull that fast. thats all.
All you have to do is search the words (auto trigger fire) One is firequest These things turn your semi auts into fully autos.
Makes me sick.
Piers I am inviting you to come to Mississippi and go to a gun show with me, or you could be at the one in Jacksonville, ARK. next weekend. You showed a false video on your show. You showed a fully automatic weapon and claimed it was a semi automatic. You now expect us to honestly take what you say into consideration now. This now causes you to lose credibility. I watch A LOT OF CNN and MSNBC so I am an open minded person.
In my book "The Second Amendment Party part 1 A Stranger to Die for" I have characters from the left middle and right. Please if you want to convince me allow those opposed to your view speak. As a retired law enforcement offcier it is important to let everyone speak. Some times letting them lie is more telling than not letting them speak.
The Second Amendment Party was here.
Richard that gun had one those slide fires on it. Here is 2 more acc. that will turn a semi into a fully automatic. The gat trigger system and the auto burst trigger system. available from firequest and other companies legally.
God Bless you my friend Piers! I it's blessing we have you. I am listening your debate about guns.Do we need to armed guard the the nation to protect everybody from bad or crazy guys?. No, we need to gather and talk in every community across the nation, propose and vote.
Yes, we'll all just hold hands and sing Kumbayah. I'm sure that will work.
Let's say we do put armed officers in every school, and let's say it does discourage school shootings... Will the next mass shooting move to a public library, park, etc? Ok NRA, we'll get armed security at our libraries. (Librarians with guns sounds awesome enough). Then more shootings. Subways, museums, stores. So is the NRA's answer going to be to get armed guards wherever we or our kids go? Just keep adding new places. NRA – think about what you're proposing and how backwards thus sounds. Today it's easier to get a gun than a drivers license. We have the right to bear arms – but should be harder to get a gun, especially assault weapons. Longer waiting periods, mandatory training, mental health checks, background checks at gun shows, and no secondary sales. I'd support a million people packing heat under the conditions, wouldn't you? A right to own our sophisticated weapons capable of mass murder in seconds (unimagioned by our founding fathers) needs to be in the right hands as much as possible. The NRA idea will not work.
Today it's easier to get a gun than a drivers license.....You sir, are a moron, and have obviously never filled out the multi-page application to purchase a gun, have you? Are criminal background checks done on people applying for a Driver's License? I think not. Go back to watching Piers bloviate. You're obviously just another thoughtless tool on the Left, so go be used as such.
So George when all the hangings were going on in Mississippi during the civil rights movement did you blame the rope too?
Piers Morgan, AC360, and CNN have been absolutely disgusting throughout the tragedy in Connecticut. Every time I turn on the TV, there they are profiting from the violence. A tragedy like this deserves quiet reflection. Not a bunch of idiots running to jump on their soapboxes. The fact that they say that they are honoring the victims while simultaneously using it as a way to up TV ratings makes your skin crawl. Piers Morgan's show was the ultimate in exploitation. Parading a bunch of pro-gun, anti-gun zealots, and NRA reps around to get the American viewing public up in arms is horrid. Just let the families grieve and stop using the tragedy as a way to grandstand. Anyone who thinks that these people are offering commonsense solutions to the problem of gun violence is crazy. I can't believe that CNN would so blatantly use this tragedy. If I see another melodramatic snapshot of candles and grieving families followed by a string of commercials and political ranting, I'm going to puke. My sympathies go out to the families. I wish them peace during this holiday season.
The left never lets a good tragedy go to waste.
Look at all of the fatal stabbings that have been taken place in china with school children. They have strict gun laws yet children are being murdered. Maybe the next step is to outlaw knives. Evil people will find a way to murder. It has happened since the beginning of time and it will happen again. As long as people have free will evil and good deeds will happen. It is tragic what has happened, but we should not immediately cast stones. Everyone should calm down and take a deep breath and then work together on a viable solution. My father and grandparents died of a murder/suicide by a gun. I don't blame the gun. The person was bipolar and didn't receive the help that was needed. I am not a member of the NRA but I believe the people have the right to bear arms. One semi-auto weapon is no more dangerous than a six shot revolver in the hands of someone that knows how to use it. Right now everyone needs to mourn the victims, quit lowering your standards by calling people morons and idiots, listen to both sides and come up with a reasonable solution. Calling people morons only discredits you. Sit back and listen. We are a free country governed by the people.
Are you trying to tell me they were all fatal? I don't think so. The one set of 22 only had 2 listed as life threatening and I think they survived and the other set of 18 I don't think had any serious injuries. You could just search it like I did. Is this what the NRA members are spewing.
I'm not talking about just the recent knifing. Do more research. I just found many different knife killings in china and I only looked at a few articles.
Look up school attacks in china on Wikipedia. Also look at the reactions and responses. This is a country with strict gun laws. Doesn't this all seem familiar. I don't believe armed teachers, too much can go wrong. I'm just saying that this can happen with or without a gun. Evil people will do evil things. If guns were outlawed, other weapons would be used. I have young kids too and it broke my heart when this happened. Like I said, I think we should take time to mourn the victims, take a deep breath, and work to find a viable solution.
I did go to wikipedia and counted the deaths. Between 2010 and 2012 I only counted 22 deaths. Most of these people survived. I do think if someone is intent on doing this kind of thing they will find a way.
Why dont we have NRA persons analyze the crime scene photos and explain why all that is necessary.
WOW Piers did you take a lesson from Fox News. You sound like Bill O Riely by not letting anybody that does see your side talk. I thought you were better than that.
Piers Morgan is not only an sbsolute disgrace but the milktoast way in which he and Tubin interviewed the CEO of the violent video gaming co. and allowed him to dismiss the impact of these games on the desensitization of Americas youth to violence, killing and carnage is unbelievable!
Peirs, that u-tube video you showed was not an AR-15, it was an m-4. (yes i saw what the video said it was)
The AR-15 is just a weapon. They call it a "Assault Weapon". Look online even youtube, you will find .22 riffles, 9mm, and shotguns can all be turned into full automatic "Assault Weapons". I'm all for lawful gun ownership, but believe that background checks are important to lawful gun ownership. Mental Health is the real issue. If my children showed signs of mental issues any guns would be removed from my home.
Good job Piers! Good straw man argument. Way to spread MISINFORMATION AND FEAR. Your supposed youtube "evidence" was flat wrong. Tell your flunkeys on staff that weapon they found was not what was used in these past crimes. Those videos showed a FULLY AUTOMATIC weapon. WHICH ARE ALREADY ILLEGAL IN THE UNITED STATES! (Since the National Firearms Act of 1934). Further, you mentioned "modifying" the guns. ALSO HIGHLY ILLEGAL (At least 10 years in Federal prison). Remember Waco? The ATF raided the place because they modified guns. But you wouldn't know that because you were too busy being a criminal tabloid muck raking yellow journalist back in England.
Piers Morgan should be FIRED PRONTO from CNN. He is spewing nothing but misinformation and hate from that desk that he doesn't deserve to sit behind. CNN PLEASE Get rid of this hate monger. He is giving nutcases more reasons to go out and do this all over again. In the face of this god awful week he has not shown one ounce of compassion for the victims or their families. Please Please Please Fire this man!
Thank you Piers for your continued efforts for sane gun control in this country, I applaud you and thank you. We can only hope that families of slain children go to Washington and never let them forget. How these congress can look their children in the eye I don't know, they are ccowards and moraaly bankrupt. The insanity must stop, The NRA's statement Friday was outrageous, Please keep the pressure on.
Pierce is the most astoundingly stupid man I have ever heard on tv. There is very little a person can do to prevent an evil person from accomplishing their goal. Timothy McVeigh killed 15 children in daycare without using a gun. Are we going to ban assault rental trucks and fuel now too? How about assault box cutters? If the terrorists didn't have box cutters, then there wouldn't have been a 9/11 ... Right? And, how did Great Britain gun ban do in preventing the IRA from killing people in your country. I forgot if there was just one more law the members of the IRA would not have been to kill anyone. We should not expect too much from Pierce. On a recent trip to England, the Tele was showing news about the epidemic of knife violence and how they need to ban certain knives. The thing people of his mindset always fail to acknowledge is that an evil person not acting just out of impulse will find a way to inflict their will.
Hey Piers–Wouldn't it be nice to be you...a multi-millionaire who lives in a secure palace with 24/7 security punctuated by riding about in limos protected by armed body guards, etc, etc. The rest of us, especially those of us in rural America where it would take upwards of 20 minutes for someone from Law Enforcement to intervene in the event of a criminal attack, need some way to protect ourselves, and that nasty "assault weapon" which you so obviously hate is just the tool for the job.
Guns are just tools, Piers. That's all. Just tools. They don't go bang by themselves. And in case you haven't been keeping up with current events, the shooter at Virginia Tech used handguns; same with the Phoenix event–a handgun.
So, banning those mean, evil looking black rifles would solve nothing other than to remove a useful tool from the hands of millions of law abiding citizens.
On second thought Piers, I wouldn't want to be you....you're far too much of a bloviator.
Hey Piers–on behalf of Gun Manufacturers and Dealers from around the country–We heartily thank you for driving up sales of those evil, black, "assault" guns!! You have done what the federal government has been unable to do with all the stimulus money–you are stimulating the economy. Great job. Keep up the good work. I'll bet you bought some Smith & Wesson or Bushmaster stock before you went on your tirade. Nice job. Would that make you guilty of inside trading?
Please take your passion to somewhere else. I laughed when you engaged in heated discussion on American policy with red face . What a fool you are. Go back to your motherland where everything is so perfect.
PIERS, I CAN NOT BELIEVE psychologist HAVE NOT DIAGNOSED OUR GUN PROBLEM. IT'S SIMPLE. MEN WHO OWN GUNS ARE COWARDS WITH PARANOID TENDENCIES. THESE GUNOWNERS ARE THE SAME MEN WHO JUMP INTO THEIR MOTHERS ARMS WHEN THEY SEE A LITTLE MOUSE, LIKE FRANK COSTANZA . MOST MEN BY NATURE ARE VIOLENT COWARDS. MEN HAVE THE FALSE SECURITY THAT A GUN WILL PROTECT THEM. GUNS DO NOT PROTECT ANYBODY, BECAUSE A CRIMINAL AWAYS ATTACKS WITH THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE. I AM SAD OUR COUNTRY IS TOTALLY DYSFUNCTIONAL.
Lou people like you need to be exterminated!!! You obviously never been robbed, or heard of a woman that has stopped a rapist with a firearm...you are a disease Lou!!!! Im sorry America we have cowards in the world like this!!! And Im sorry to all victims on behalf of this loser!!!!
I agree that there is an overwhelming sense of paranoia amongst gun owners, suggesting that we must all arm ourselves as if it's every man for himself. What is, the wild west of years past?
Guns are the problem. In the hands of the 'bad guys', of course we feel threatened and want to protect ourselves. But fighting violence with violence is very short sighted and doesn't address the source of the problem. There are simply too many guns circulating out there. Unfortunately, arming everyday citizens would set this country over a hundred years back – do we really want to make daily shoot outs a part of our lives? I believe we need to make guns less available to everyone but the military and police and find non-lethal alternatives for everyday citizens to protect themselves.
Although it is a fact that there are bad people that want to do harm to innocent people, frankly I'm more concerned about what this society will turn into if these gun slingers have their way with this paranoid extremist way of thinking. Instead of trying to deter violence through fear, we need to nip the problem at the bud and reel in the tools that people are using to cause harm and destruction.
I think Piers Morgan needs to allow his guests to get a word in. I believe that is why they were invited on the show. Also, I would love to have Piers Darrell Scott.
the genie has been let out of the bottle for this country
God taken out of our culture has created a social mentality that i can do it all.....
i dont have to trust in god
we are headed for social chaos and we are bringing on ourselfs
may God help us if only for one more time
Piers...its really hard to take advice and or opinions from a foreign man that sits behind a desk and probably never held a public service job.... you probably live cozy in a rich gated community where common folk and crazy evil individuals can't reach you!!! I've been a Deputy for 10yrs.. I work in a Jail now ...I started when I was 21 yrs old!!! I have seen every crazy insane situation in real life....and not from a third party television set.....From my real life experience I have concluded there is evil in this world...evil in masses...evil in individuals!!!!.. Although this lastest incident is a tragedy...the solution isn't to stop carrying firearms or your so intolerable semi auto firearms (?)...the solution to limiting these cowardly attacks is to identify these mentally ill people...and violent offenders and monitor or enforce mental illness case management. Piers, you fail to mention meaningful statistics....mass violent crime is at its lowest in 10yrs...and at a all time low in communities where the majority of law abiding citizens own firearms.. How about you talk about all the cases where firearms have saved people lives...You don't want to do that......I just heard a story yesterday from a 911 call where a 12 yr old girl shot a man trying to rob her house!!!! Loved it..... Child 1.. loser paracite criminal 0 potentially saving a future victims life...hats off to the 12 yr old girl!! And another thing I don't hear you or the rest of your liberal news correspondents bring up, the stories about houses near the mexican border that frequently get attacked by illegal immigrants...sometimes 20 + at at time...ask those people how AR-15's protected their families life.......and to approach this last tragedy, we should look at the mother for fault for not locking her weapons up properly, knowing she had a mentally ill child. Piers...to conclude this...the sooner you and you liberal (mates) realize that evil exists in the world and start listening to people in the trenches like the policemen, the firefighters, and the soldiers and stop listening to people that sit behind a desk all day or liberal politicans that have lost touch with reality you will continue to have a scewed sence of reality when it comes to violence in America!! And for heavens sake...the way you talk to your guests by calling them stupid over a prompter, you sir sound stupid ,and it shows when you start insulting that you lost the argument!!!! And if you don't like whats going on In America..go back to your country where your strict gun laws have caused a dramatic increase in vilolent crimes involving knives....now knife reform is in place!! Have a good from the working man in the trenches...if anyone would like to debate..im open...Unionsickness@yahoo.com
Greetings from Brazil.
On the horrific subject of killing defenseless people is clear that finger pointing will take nowhere since the contributing causes for such monstrosity acts are endless, starting with the fact that violence roots themselves are built into the human animal so we learned with the Master Darwin.
Furthermore, the killer once determined to perpetrate his evil will find a way to achieve that objective. Remember the challenges of the drugs control scenario.
Anyway, I agree that guns control, considering the complexity of this terrible reality, should contribute at least to make more difficult the access to war weapons.
Luiz Carlos Mascarenhas
P. S. I never forget your delighted face of admiration to Susan Boyle. What a gorgeous surprise she was!
FBI murder report by weapon for 2011, Expanded Homicide Data Table 11:
* Total murder victims – 12,664
* total firearms murders – 8,583
* Handguns – 6,220 victims
* Rifles – 323 victims (The so called "assault weapons" are rifles)
* Shotguns – 356 victims
* Knives or cutting instruments – 1,694 victims
* Blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.) – 496 victims
* Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) – 726 victims
This data tell us that in 2011 a murder victim had:
* 524% more chances to die from a stab wound than from a rifle.
* 225% more chances to die from a punch or a kick than from a rifle.
* 153% more chances to die from a hammer or baseball bat than from a rifle.
* Of all murders 2.25% are committed with a rifle.
* Of all murders 2.81% are committed with a shotgun.
* Of all murders 5.73% are committed with hands, fists or feet.
* Of all murders 13.37% are committed with a knife or cutting instrument.
Seems to me a lot of people who ask for a rifle ban have their priorities quite confused.
Every security expert will tell you that level of security is must supersede or, at least, be equal to the level of threat. If threat is escalates – security must be escalated too. This is common sense issue.
When 9/11 happened how did America responded? Did we all stop flying and use airplanes because terrorists turned them in to the flying bombs? No, we increases security in the airports and posted Armed I say again, Armed! Federal Air Marshals on the planes. We gave them the firearm and paid for their superior firearms training with our tax money for the reason so in the right moment they can stand up against Evil Face to Face fight it and overcome it. There are some situations in the life when the only chance you got it meet Force with a Force in order to prevent greater Evil.
In the hostile environment of Iraq and Afghanistan how do we protect our personal from the hostile treat? By disarming soldiers, or disarming population where everybody has AK? No! Then higher threat level then higher security level... We roll with armored vehicles, superior firepower and live in the compounds behind HESCO bastions that protect us from mortars and rocket fire. This is extreme situation. There highest level of threat requires the highest level of security.
America have issue with school security it is a fact.
So what needs to be done? Security in the schools must be escalated accordingly to the threat! This is the only answer. And you achieve not by disarming populations, but improving security on the weak target. Make schools hard target.
Why all this mass shooting incidents always happened in some schools/college/university "Gun Free Zones" where nobody have a guns and sometimes there is no armed security and never happened somewhere at Concealed Carry Permit Holders Conventions, NRA meetings or for example on the US Army
firing range where infantry company trains reflexive fire and everybody have
loaded firearms? or Police departments?
Because Person with a criminal mind knows:
1. He will be the only person with a gun and nobody will be resisting.
2. The are no control on entry point .
3. He has an element of surprise.
He will not be assaulting police department or gun club because he will be shot immediately.
How do we react On Green on Blue threat in Afghanistan?
1. If before we had a weapon on bases unloaded, now we carry it "ember" the magazine locked to the weapon if you need to all you need to do a send the round in to the chamber and take the safety off and fire back. We escalated level of security.
2. During meeting with locals we came up with the "Guardian Angels" people with a loaded weapon ready to take down the treat immediately. We escalated level of security. Why disarming is not effective? Because weapon give you advantage and criminals will try to get it no matter what. This is history of the mankind. Accept it.
During so-called “Green on Blue incidents” in Afghanistan the rouge Afghani soldier that decided to turn weapon on Americans capable to take maybe one or two guys (people who he managed to caught by surprise) but not 28 and after that he also goes down with
bullet in his head? What prevents that rouge Afghani from shooting dozens? It is obvious he wants to take as many lives as he can… Think about it. We never have a mass shooting with numbers like this in the even in the COMBAT ZONE. 1-2victims – max. and perpetrator usually getting shot on the spot.
But if you disarm the very same professional soldiers and put them in the situation where they have to face the armed evil they just become a victims just like everybody else.
Perfect situation is Fort Hood shooting. Bad guy with the gun good guys no = good guy is a victim. Equation is simple. Bad guy with gun vs good guy with gun = it is 50/50. Bad guy with a gun vs unarmed good guy = good guy is a victim. And who finally stopped Major Hassan from shooting more victims? Guy with a gun who finally arrived on the scene.
Why nobody shot Lanza down after he killed first kid? Because nobody was there with adequate tool to stop him.
Life is simple, people. If you don't have a ball's and weapon to defeat a threat you will become a victim. Soldiers on Fort Hood had a balls but did not have a weapon because according to Army REGs you can not carry concealed on military post. Hasan knew it. He broke all Army laws and regulations and killed a 13 and wounded 29.
Lanza knew it and killed 28. Virginia Tech, Colorado all mass shooting happened in the Gun Free Zones where nobody suppose to have guns. Apparently criminals do not care about big red sight on the door "No firearms allowed".
Piers is a moron and promotes mis-information and fear. Ted Nugent and everyother guest with common sense set him straight with facts this week yet he still spout off knee-jerk comments based only in emotion.
Piers Morgan asked why people needed AR15s. He should visit the far right wing website theblade.com, where one of his guests, Will Cain, is a blogger. The following is typical of the comments on that website:
“That’s right we don’t need ‘assault rifles’ for home defense or hunting. We need them for when we need to take up arms against our government if/when it becomes corrupt and stops answering to the people. Why can’t idiots on the left grasp this fact? This is why the 2nd Amendment was added. It wsn’t [sic] put in for hunters or defending your home against common criminals. For f’s sake… I can’t believe there are people stupid enough to actually believe that it was.”
This is the kind of person the NRA represents when they advocate for these weapons, a person itching to 'take up arms' against his elected government.
"Need", in this regard, is an artificial value judgment imposed by one
person on another. In other words: Tyranny.
You do not get to determine what I need any more than I get to determine
what you need. The list of items we possess, and actions we indulge in,
that are "un-needed" and potentially (or even demonstrably) dangerous is
A freedom to choose things outside of our "needs" is what it means to
have self-determination and freedom. Unless someone exercising that
choice directly infringes on another freedom it should not be a
consideration of the State or any other person what that choice may be.
Ted I agree with you. I have been saying this for years. If any kind of gun control comes out of this I am afraid that the NRA nutjobs will be crawling out of the woodwork. So many times I have read in blogs how the NRA members are going to take out people that are for gun control and how they will start a civil war. They even brag about how fast they will take them out and what guns they will use. (2 seconds with a 9mm)
Question for Mr. Piers Morgan and Mr.Geoffrey Canada:
Why is it that in Countries with very little gun murder rate and very heavy restrictions on gun ownership, I'm thinking England for instance, the police is patrolling the streets with sub-machine guns while nowhere in America we can see cops strolling around with M-16?
They are armed up when patrolling 'sensitive' objects such as airports etc. It didn't use to be that way in Europe and it only started when some continent on the other side of the planet declared war on pretty much everyone who thinks differently and dares to oppose its views...
You don't see that in the US? Where are you living? Must be some remote village. Well, at least you seem to have internet access...
And also I have to add one more thing. There are many people here from Canada, UK and other countries speak here with agenda that we have a strict gun control and we don’t have mass shooting situations. I’m going to tell you one thing. You guys don’t have self-defense neither. I came to America 6 years ago from Ukraine and have been in the US Army since. In Ukraine I also served. I’ve been deployed twice with Infantry and special recon units. My MOS is 11B. I know about guns and weaponry more than 90 % of you ever will. But point is: in Ukraine or Russia have strict gun control. Handguns are forbidden for civilians. If you got caught with illegal- this is from 5 to 8 years in jail automatically. No parole no probation. And is going to be not some sissy and Human right protected American jail. Russian jail is the place that you never wanna be in.
To get permit to buy a regular shotgun or hunting rifle it is from 6 month to one year collecting paperwork. But it does not stop criminals from possession of most sophisticated firearms designed for military special operations, Look at the criminal news from Russia what kind of weapon police confiscates on the daily basis. It is not only AKMs AK-74 and (by the way I’m talking about full auto not “semi” like here) variations but also Suppressed weapon like Vintorez sniper rifle or VAL, Supressed pistol Stechkina and so on… How do this weapon find it’s way to the streets? Stolen from military depots, bought from corrupted officials, go figure… The fact it’s there. Look at the crime rates…
People will always try to get access to the weapon because it is gives you advantage over your opponent. It can save your life. There are a lot of shooting in America. This is true. But the difference from other counties, in America not only good people getting shot all the time. A lot of situation when bad guys are getting shot too. That the luxury that other countries do not have. That was one of the reason why I moved to America from Ukraine. Here I can protect myself. (I could before I moved to NY and had to leave all my guns in NC). And by the way AR-15 equipped with M68 or Eotech is superb self-defense weapon.
Mate, you’re not seriously arguing private gun ownership in the US by making comparisons with Russia or the Ukraine, do you?!... You said you left the Ukraine for a reason (I guess several) and maybe you should take a moment and reflect on that again…
I’m a vet myself but that doesn’t mean I now want to militarize my family and neighborhood. If you think you have to and believe you’re living in a war zone, thus need to carry guns – well, arming up isn’t the answer, but only a change of governance and society. In my opinion, any American who served ie. in Iraq should be able to understand that very well. Sorry you didn’t seem to have learned that lesson. What a waste…
You and CNN would be doing a great public service to publish the names (along with political party and geographic constiuency) of all members of the US Congress and their NRA ratings.
I really like Piers. People that are lying on his show should be cut-off. I can tell Piers is passionate about this subject. I will continue watching him. People need to know the truth and not just lies the NRA and others are spreading. Thank you Piers!
Robin you don't know what you're talking about The video that he showed was not a semi automatic weapon it was a fully automatic weapon he is a liar
Yes, he is passionate, but he is extremely biased and totally incompetent on the subject. M4 series rifle has a 45 rnds per minute rate of fire on semi. 30 rnds clip or not does not make any difference because lanza was shooting people for almost 20 minutes before police arrived. 20 min you gotta be kidding me? Reload M4 takes less then 2 seconds. Even if he had bunch of 10 rnds instead 30 rnds mags. He had more then enough time to reload dozens of them. With reaction time 20 minutes he could achieve the same victims number using shotgun or revolver. Mr Piers invited to the show people that have almost zero firearms knowledge. Because would he speak with professionals, Law enforcement, Military or Security folks he will loose immediately.
Agreed! And when Morgan is confronted with experts he doesn't agree with, he calls them stupid.
I totally agree with you. Someone has to stand up to the NRA.
Yes a shotgun with numbe 4 buckshot is far more deadlier then assault weapons are yet they say you can keep your hunting guns not knowing that you only have to be 18 to buy a rifle or a shotgun this shows how dumb they actually are you would think they try to be in form first I guess that doesn't fit their agenda
Piers – I'm asking you to read the following very carefully, since writing is seemingly the only way that a person can say what they need to say to you without being run over and bluntly cut off...
To start, I need to point out that you seem to be fixated on "gun crime". You don't look at the bigger picture of violent crime in general. What difference does it make if a person is assaulted or killed with a gun, knife, bomb, or other weapon? Why the heavy fixation on guns? Are the people that are injured or killed by other weapons somehow less important?
You need to compare violent crime rates across regions and across countries instead of focusing on one of the many instruments that are used to commit violent crime. Let us not forget that he worst mass murder to ever occur in the U.S. (9/11) was pulled off with box cutters.
As the gun lobby is tired of saying and the gun controllers are tired of hearing, "guns don't kill people, people kill people". The gun controllers keep saying "we get that" but then remain fixated "gun crime" while seemingly ignoring the issue of violent crime in general. We need to focus on fixing the culture that is fostering or perhaps even generating people who desire and are willing to commit mass murder. The culture is the problem, not guns.
As you were told repeatedly by guests on your show, the violent crime rate (per capita) is extremely low in the rural areas of the U.S. where gun ownership rates are the highest. The highest violent crime rates are in the urban areas where gun ownership rates are the lowest. The urban areas also have the most stringent gun control. Taking this trend into account, please explain how you think that additional gun control is going to make schools or other public places safer.
In one day, a gunman killed 26 children and adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the use (and abuse) of alcohol kills 75,000 Americans yearly (that's an average of 205 people daily). Why isn't this tragic alcohol-related loss of life painted all over the CNN headlines along with heated debates over alcohol regulation? As another point of fact, the use of alcohol kills more people in the US annually than the use of guns. According to the CDC, roughly 30,000 Americans are killed from the use of guns annually. Again where is the outcry for more regulation on alcohol when alcohol use is are clearly a much bigger threat to American safety?
Unlike guns, alcoholic drinks have no practical or functional use. Alcohol is strictly used as a part of socializing and relaxing. If this fixation on "gun crime" is really about saving lives and making this country safer, then any gun control advocate (including those who enjoy alcoholic beverages) would, with equal zeal and fervor, also advocate for stricter alcohol regulation and perhaps the banning of some types of drinks. They would be more than happy to beg lawmakers to place further restrictions on what, when, where, and how much they are allowed to drink. I don't see that happing, so it brings into question what the true motives of gun controllers are.
It has been illegal, with harsh consequences, to drink and drive for decades and yet drinking and driving remains a huge problem in this country. How is the additional proposed gun control legislation going to fare any better?
Because of the threats that we face in today's culture, I agree that armed police or security officers with body armor are needed to increase the safety of our schools. Even if a ban on assault weapons and limitations on magazine or clip capacities was successful at eliminating those items, other legal guns would still be available and evil-minded people would still attempt carry out mass killings at our schools. Schools are gun free zones by law, so people with the intent to carry out mass killings know that schools are a safe and easy place to do just that.
If a perpetrator is engaged by armed officer(s), the perpetrator will either flee, surrender, be killed/wounded, or end up distracted trying to fight into the school. Every minute that a perpetrator is alternating between taking cover and exchanging fire with the officers is a minute that helpless children are not being massacred.
Even if some innocent bystanders were hit in the crossfire, the overall outcome would still be better than if the perpetrator was freely able to wander the halls and classrooms and systematically kill defenseless victims one after another. It needs to be understood that risk can only be reduced, not eliminated. Armed officers would significantly reduce the risk to students in the event of an attempted mass shooting as compared to a perpetrator facing no armed resistance.
The major shortcoming of the law prohibiting guns in schools is that a person who intends to commit murder is not going to be deterred by the lesser crime of possessing a gun at a school. I'm NOT advocating that we need to allow children or teachers to carry guns at school, but just pointing out that this is a law that makes people feel good but does nothing to protect our kids.
Likewise, the gun control legislation that people are advocating in the wake of this mass shooting will accomplish nothing. There are uncountable numbers of "assault" weapons and high-capacity clips in circulation that even if made illegal, criminals would still have easy access to them. As with the law banning guns in schools, a criminal intent on committing mass murder is not going to refrain from the lesser crime of illegally possessing a gun or clip.
The people that commit mass murder have no conscience and get a thrill out of killing. Punishing law-abiding gun owners is not going to stop these people from obtaining legal or illegal guns and use them to go on a shooting rampage. What needs to be understood by everyone in this discussion is that more laws are not going to deter someone from committing murder. A person determined to commit murder doesn't care about what other laws are broken in the process.
It should be clear by now that we cannot legislate our way out of this problem, especially by legislating against guns. We need armed and trained officers as a first and immediately available line of defense in our schools – the threat of school shootings persists with or without gun control.
For the sake of argument, pretend that the Federal government bans "assault" weapons and limits the number of rounds in magazines and clips. Afterwards, a person walks into a school with a handgun or traditional hunting rifle or shotgun that is still legal to manufacture and own and kills several people. Are you going to remain satisfied with the "assault" weapon ban or are you going to say that more gun control is needed and that traditional hunting guns need to be banned too?
If you can't step back from your microscope on guns and look at the big picture of violent people being responsible for violent crime, if you can't be as appalled by alcohol-related deaths as you are by gun-related deaths, your basis for more gun control boils down to either a hatred or irrational fear of guns or both. Neither is a valid reason changing Federal law that affects millions of law-abiding gun owners.
Now that I have had a chance to make my case without interruption, I challenge you to carefully read what I said and provide a rebuttal.
Look at Europe as an example.
While gun deaths in Britain are low, the overall violent crime and homicide rate, despite the absence of guns, is the highest in Western Europe. The Germans, French, Swiss, Italians and Spanish, to name a few of Britain's close European neighbors, are some of the biggest gun owning nations on the planet. The Swiss and Germans for instance, on a per capita basis, rank 3rd and 4th in the world, according the UN, in terms of private gun ownership (45.7 gun/100 people and 30.1 guns/100 people respectively), and the French, Italians and Spanish rank closely behind. Britain conversely has one of the lowest gun ownership rates (ranked 88th – 6.7 guns/100 people) and yet all of these other European countries have significantly lower overall homicides rates, despite having more guns in circulation. Maybe Piers could explain why the probability of getting murdered in Britain is so much higher than any of these other gun toting European countries – the overall murder rate in Germany, Switzerland and France for example is 30% lower than Britain's. Guns are clearly not the problem, because if they were, all of these countries would have substantially higher homicide rates than Britain. The question that should be asked is why are some societies, like Britain, so much more violent than others?
Lastly, Piers continues to mislead his viewers in terms of the reported gun crime numbers in Britain. If you take 1997 as the baseline year, when Britain banned handguns, the number of reported gun crimes and gun injuries today are significantly higher. Multiple reports in the British media in 2009 confirm this. Gun crime doubles in a decade, were the headlines.
It is important to note that Wayne LaPierre and all of the other executives of the NRA are grossly overcompensated and any position they take is designed to protect their jobs. They are shallow vapid excuses for human beings. Wayne LaPierre earned $960,000 in compensation for 2010 per the NRA's 2010 Form 990, the most recent filing available. This is public information. Also note that McGladrey are their auditors/accountants. Folks who use McGladrey might want to consider changing accounting firms.
What everyone is missing here is: What this world came to if if have to have armed forces at schools? Who wants to live in this kind of "land of opportunities"? Entertainment industry violence must stop. Please don't bring playing cops with wooden guns here, this just demonstrates your intellectual level. Being bombarded with violence everywhere you turn for 5 hours/day, from age 2, does a number to a child's developing brain. The world desensitized to violence. Good intentions gone bad" TV, Internet, videogames. What happened to traditional parenting? Do people even know what it is?
How many people own a car that goes faster than 85 miles an hour. That's the fastest allowed speed in this country. How many people die in car accidents where excessive speed was the contributing factor? We need to ban cars that go over 85 miles an hour. 10 times as many people die from excessive speed auto accidents as assault rifle killings. We need to ban smoking because of it's cancer causing rate too.
Sarah, you have brought up the most important reason why the politicians are not doing anything about gun control....money. Money. Not quality of life, not living in fear all the time, kids afraid to go to school. Kids not allowed to go outside anymore.....Money
Piers I always thought you were an idiot now I know it! Why don't you carry your behind back to England if you don't like the way things are here.
Sara, you brought up the real reason politicians arent standing up against gun control....money. Our kids are afraid to be outside anymore. And we fear for them from guns...if you can believe it. Living in a war zone.
Piers, most if not all people I know are outraged and applaud your efforts. I haven't heard one reason for an assault weapon to be legal that makes any sense. A car that goes faster than 85 miles per hour cannot cause this kind of carnage. If the death of 20 innocent children and 6 educators trying to protect them cannot wake people up I don't know what else could. All you who think think arming schools is ok, what about parks, playgrounds, daycares etc. Where is it going to stop? And for what reason? Because you think a killer weapon that shoots 100 bullets per minute should be available for anyone to buy? I am a teacher and a mother of small children, I believe in the United States of America, where children should grow without seeing carnage, where teachers should teach without bearing arms, where people should have the courage and stand for what is right.
This nightmare has been like a second 911 – a new kind of horror – something inconceivable – then it happens. I believe 911 awakened it, but these mass killings perpetuate a wave of paranoia in our country – prompting a percieved need to be ready – a constant hyper vigilance (extreme "prepping") and the growing sale & proliferation of firearms and ammunition of all types. However, we've got to find a way to stop this de facto domestic arms race and its deadly consequences. Yes, the problem is not just guns – our American society is uniquely complex and diverse, with inherent challenges – but it's readily available modern semi-automatic military grade (high capacity magazine 9mm/5.56mm/.223 caliber) firearms that make these lightening fast mass killings possible.
There will be no solution until we ignore the extremists on both sides of the argument. To solve this, we need to break out of our personal worlds and think about "us" rather than "me" and find the common ground: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
CNN – continue facilitating the debate. Remain passionate about helping us finding a solution – facilitate the discussion – don't let it fade from the TV screen. However, as you have recently done, back off a little let the facts speak for themselves. The "kookiness" and wisdom of any side of this argument will be self evident to the American people. The longer you keep this issue alive, the more likely and sooner the American people will demand and get a solution.
Is NRA is above US government or US government commands NRA?
Why so much issues when people are dying daily due to gun?
Apart from gun control every government must control video games use age to kids and teens. We did not have this many crimes in USA before, but after the introduction of video games the crime rate is sky rocketing. This is my opinion
Give me a shotgu you left wing idiots no nothing I'll take a good ol fashion shotgun any day over an assault weapon
A 16 year old has an adult hunting license So that means me and of 16 year old and 17 year olds are out hunting today with out any adult supervision whatsoever yet they never go commit mass murder. How come that is It's because They grew up with respect for guns and people something left wing idiots know nothing about like mister Morgan
What an unbelievable tragity. I cried when I watched the news unfold.
I spent a great deal of my life working as an advanced Paramedic in Canada and through that attended many violent and sudden deaths .
As a front line worker in a first responder position we saw the results of a wide range of human tragedies and through most of my career I saw very little death and injury as a result of violet use of a gun. Its not to say it doesn't happen but it is much more rare here than it is in the USA.
The notion that more guns can make America safer is ludicrous. America is spinning out of control.
I love watching Piers on this topic but I wish he could do some homework and compare gun violence in the USA to that of Canada. Canada is never really talked about but our demographics are similar, we are neighbors and more importantly we have “Gun Control”. I would love to see CNN do some real investigative reporting and compare cities such as Vancouver/Seattle or Detroit/London ont.
Piers is always talking about England or some other far away place that most Americans can not relate to. Start comparing the violent gun statistics between Canada and the USA. In many ways Canada is a mirror image of the US but is different in several key areas and gun control is one of them.
America needs fewer guns not more.
Despite having no guns, the Brits have the highest violent crime and homicide rate in Western Europe. Britain's close European neighbors are some of the largest gun owning nations on the planet. If a correlation existed between the levels of gun ownership and homicide, surely we would see it here, but we're not. So why do Britain's European neighbors, who have substantially more guns in private circulation, have significantly lower homicide rates?
When you say the Brits have the highest violent crime rate I will have to take your word for it without checking the stats.
The point is a person has a better chance of surviving a violent crime if no gun is avalible. You have a better chance of surviving a physical assult or even a knife atteck than you do when a gun is used.
We did plenty of physical assults(weekend bar fights) and picked up some badly beaten patents but most survived. The real nasty ones had knives involved and if they knicked an artery it could be quickly fatal. It was rare to hear of calls with the use of a handgun.
Your survival rate is much higher when a fist is used instead of a gun :)
I am talking from a position of experiance and I have seen this up close and personel many times.
Adding the avalibility of a firearm to these situations is like throwing gasoline on a fire.
Respectfully I think you missed the point of my post. To remind you the Swiss and the Germans, on a per capita basis, are the 3rd and 4th largest gun owning nations in the world, compared to Britain that ranks 88th – but yet, Switzerland and Germany have homicide rates that are 30% lower than Britain's. Violent crime aside, why is the overall murder rate then so much higher in Britain, where there are very few guns available, compared to other Western European countries where there are significantly more guns? If guns are the problem Western European murder rates should be substantially higher than Britain's, but they are not.
CR. You missed my point as well.
Rather than talk about % difference lets talk about homicide rates per capita.
Please refer to Wikipedia for the following stats. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate
From 1995-2011 Great Briton had 1.2 homicides per 100,000
Canadas rate was 1.6 per 100,00
And the USA has a rate of 4.2 per 100,000
I'm not that good at math but something tells me the USA is way out there when compaired to deaths per 100,000
So my question is why is the USA rate so much higher than Canadas?
And SWITZERLAND is .7 per 100,000
Germany is .8 per 100,000
Check your facts!
Thanks Randy for clarifying the data, which further demonstrates my point. So what you're saying is that on a per capita basis, the Swiss and Germans, who privately own 8 and 5 times more guns respectively as the British, actually have a homicide rate that's 40% lower than Britain's. Adding Canada as another comparison further demonstrates my point. The Swiss own, on a per capita basis, twice as many guns as the Canadians (45.7 guns/100 people vs. 23.8 guns/100 people respectively) and yet based on the wiki figures you have provided shows that Canada's homicide rate is more than double the Swiss rate. This is an even better example to use that clearly demonstrates the problem can't be about the availability of guns. So Canadians own (per capita) half as many guns as the Swiss, but have more than double number of homicides. Thanks for making my point clearer and giving it a North America context!
The Swiss have mandatory military service and are very well trained as a nation. They have mandatory yearly service as well. The reason they have so many guns is that they maintain ownership throughout there military service.
I cant help but notice you completly ignore the deaths per 100,000. This is the real point of my post. Your right about the % difference between the Swiss and Brits BUT their homicide rate is .7 per 100,000 and the USA is 4.2 per 100,000.
What I am talking about is the deplorable homicide rates in the USA VS the Swiss,Germans,Brits and even the Canadians.
Please help me understand .7 Vs 4.2 homicides per 100,000. You seem to like using % so how many times higher is the USA rate VS the Swiss rate?
The point is this:
Switzerland and Germany do NOT ban guns. Result? They have homicide rates that are 30% lower than Britain's
The USA does NOT ban guns. Result? Homicide rates are higher than Britains, but it must be for some OTHER reason BESIDES no ban on guns - because the Swiss and Germans do the same thing as the USA (no gun ban), and the common factor is lower homicide rates. If the correlation was really "more guns" = "more hocides", then you would see it happening in Switzerland and Germany as well. But you DON'T. Common sense tells you Morgan's argument isn't valid.
Piers I don't like the NRA. But I am disappointed in you. I understand how hard it is to stay calm and collected while interviewing these people. I would not be able to do it. I would suggest to you that you let these people keep talking and let the garbage keep spewing from their mouths. They will dig their own holes and I think that the public would be able to figure it out. I agree with what you are saying 100%. Semi auto military style weapons should be outlawed. Check out the gungarage website and do a search on "trigger auto fire" also go to the NRA store and see what they are selling this Christmas, A quick magazine loader that makes it faster for these lunatics to reload.
I believe that a few things need to happen.
#1 Put armed police in every school This would be to protect the children and I am talking next week when they get back to school. No NRA nutjob volunteers.
#2 Start banning semi automatics and make people turn them in with payment.
#3 outlaw all attachments that turn any gun into a semi or fully automatic.
#4 Make punishment for gun crimes and carrying a concealed weapon a lot stricter.
#5 make hollow point and armor piercing ammo illegal to sell or to own in the united states
#6 Make it mandatory for police checks on all weapons and ammo sales
#7 Mandatory gun safety courses for anybody owning or purchasing a gun
#8 Bring out the national guard and armed forces to stifle the NRA membership that have already promised civil war if anybody touches their guns.
Thanks for the good work Piers
If one states what rights collectively our B of R gives us or that we have the right to rise up or we are being led into a financial nightmare or if we question what we have been told, one will not be posted. Brain numbed America will keep texting while they give away our rights beacsue the TV says we should. How sad that a nation of morons are allowed to represent all of us. It isn't about ownership of guns, it is about moral duty to throw 'em out if they don't represent liberty.
Opponents of a ban on assault guns offer more laws for background checks at gun stores and swap meets as an answer to the mentally ill getting their hands on these guns.
The Newtown shooter did not get his guns at a gun store or swap meet....
He got his guns from his mother's closet...
She got them legally...
Please keep up your campain on totally banning assault guns and rifles in the US.
Also, the opponents say you keep bringing up Britain as having a low murder rate from guns. They say the rate there is rising... so instead of 54 a year is it 60? . I would still take that compared to 34 a day here.
The NRA is very saddened by what happened in New town. So am I. But the facts are any attempt to remove any weapon from any law abiding citizen is crazy. It is not guns that are the problem. Mr La Pierre showed sincere personal remorse. If any one thinks having well armed guards or CHL carrying school officials is not workable and only short term then why do we have TSA at the airports? Armed Secret Service covering the presidents for decades? Banks and stadiums protected by armed guards for decades? Why do we make our schools gun free killing zones.
Those or you who want to control society and mask that behind gun control and abridge the Second Amendment need to realize that the bad guys will always be able to get weapons. At the Atlanta Olympics the perp used a pipe bomb, Do you really think removing any guns from the law abiding population will in anyway prevent gun violence and violence in general? Of course you don't. You have another agenda.
Blah blah blah! Same old arguments! I want my guns! No guns are bad! Why are we setting ourselves up to fail and be stuck in grid lock! AGAIN!
We are a political society and everyone thinks their rights and values are most important.
But we are asking the wrong questions? Who NEEDS a semi automatic weapon? Why do people want them? How do mentally sick people access them? How do we keep them out if the hands of those who cannot or will not use them appropriately? All good and valid questions.
But...who profits from having a semi-automatic military grade weapon, in my opinion is a better one. Who profits from society having these weapons? Is the mother of all questions! We already know who paid the price last week. As a result, a small portion of our population made significant fiscal profits this week. Increased gun sales, preempted by the carnage in Newport, CT and shrouded in a cloak of called second amendment rights.
The only time these moral wrongs have been successfully impacted in our country, have been when the profitable industry has had to shoulder a financial responsibility for the impact of their product. Just ask Exon.
We need to hold the very well funded gun lobby accountable for the impact their product has on our society. It is ironic that the gun lobby thinks that schools should have armed guards. How about we tax the manufacturers so that they pay for the solution to the problem their product creates. Are they going to donate the weapons and training and salaries for this? No they want tax dollars to buy guns from them to arm against the product that they produce.
Why don't gun companies have to pay for PSA's on gun safety? Why don't gun companies regulate themselves in a way that the government doesn't have to be their conscience? If gun lobbyists insist on taking liberty with their liberty then it should be treated like any other type of abuse and dealt with accordingly. Come on America let's tell the gun industry that we refuse to use the blood of children as advertisements for increased gun sales.
"Who NEEDS a semiautomatic weapon?" Um, most handguns are semiautomatic. Please don't let the big scary sounding words fool you. I am sure if you google it, you can find a glossary on guns and their parts. I'm not being sarcastic. People throw 'semiautomatic' around like they are talking about an M-16.
An unarmed population will be desired when the dummies realize, too late that financially we have been screwed. The masters don't realize though that anger comes in many forms and in the 'age of science" guns aren't that important. A small minority has no reason to morally protect the dumbed majority in the battle of the rights of man. It is obvious that our banking masters will dip to new lows to push an agenda. Less reason to be as the peican now and more like the eagle. The world is at stake and it has nothing to do with Johnny Lunchmeat anyway. From Seqenre Tao to Manly Hall to now we have knowledge of true liberty and we have an obligation brothers to protect the Rights of Man from oppressive governments even if they are more friend than foe.
What a bunch of paranoia.
America the free my a..sss.
Lets arm every man women and child so you can stand your ground!
America is decending into utter chaos.
An eye for an eye until no one is left.
NRA-Nuts Really After all
Mr Shelby: Those stats can't be right – Wikipedia? In 2011 there were about 9500 firearm deaths in the USA. In Canada 140 and the UK 14. Even allowing for the population differences (Canada 1/10th; UK 1/6th) the rate for the US have to be way higher.
It may seem like utter chaos because the news jumps all over calamities like this, but I don't see chaos from my vantage point. I see a lot of good people in this country who are concerned for it's well being. There are killings everyday all around the world, but somehow we just continue on, knowing life itself is a crap shoot. We just don't believe any harm is going to come to us, but we know it's a possibility.
Land of gun fear
Home of the grave
From 1995-2011 Great Briton had 1.2 homicides per 100,000
Canadas rate was 1.6 per 100,00
And the USA has a rate of 4.2 per 100,000
I'm not that good at math but something tells me the USA is way out there when compaired to deaths per 100,000
And SWITZERLAND is .7 per 100,000
Germany is .8 per 100,000
So my question is why is the USA rate so much higher than everyone else?
If you think the answer is because "there's no gun ban", then why isn't the rate also much higher for Switzerland and Germany???? They don't have a gun ban, and their rates are LOWER than Britain's.
You also haven't factored in the stark differences in total population for these smaller countries vs. the USA.
I own 15 guns, including 3 AR-15s, 2 of which I built myself. Needless to say, I love guns. Yet I agree with you. As a society we are no longer sane enough to be allowed this unabridged right to by whatever weapon we want without training, background investigation, psych testing, qualification, national registration, something. The gun show/private sale loophole is just outright ridiculous. In AZ, where I'm from, you can literally buy a gun out of the classified ads in a face to face sale with no ID! Any felon, psycho, or underage person could easily buy a gun that way. The problem with your argument is you bring pro-NRA gun nuts on your show to debate with your liberal guests and the debate goes nowhere because, guess what, THEY DON'T SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE, and neither do you. You need to bring someone like myself on the show, someone who loves guns, owns guns, but is for common sense legislation to protect our citizens, and especially our children. For example, I watched your show where you were comparing AR-15s to machine guns. Right there you lose any credibility in the mind of a firearms enthusiast because it's simply inaccurate. But more importantly it's a pointless argument, because, as the military learned after Vietnam, semi-auto rifles are more efficient killers than full auto rifles. That's why our military transitioned from a fully automatic M16A1 to a semi-auto/burst M16A2 [and burst is rarely if ever used (I was an infantry Marine in Iraq as well)] Someone with military experience knows this, whereas you and your liberal guests obviously do not.
What is wrong with Liberals....
Piers keep up the good work on gun control. We need a million person March on Washington to tell the politicians we mean business.
These “military looking” rifles are only popular because of marketing trends.
FYI.....The firearms used at the Columbine shooting were bought at a gunshow by two underaged kids with no background checks or registration required.
Mr. Morgan go back to London and look for talent. For me, I would like to see him feel safe again and go back where he came from. When did the Right to Bear Arms come down to sporting and hunting? As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". In 1698 the Crown tried to disarm us unless you were a Protestant and now Peirce Morgan is trying to do the same. Lets kick this rude man out and complain to the cable companies to get him removed from the airways.
You are paranoid and dangerous.
I say deport the NRA and its 4 million members. They can take their guns and excessive testorene levels somewhere else. Great job Pierce Morgan for having the guts to tell it like it is. Keep it up !
Give peace a chance....see if that works better.
Sue: Sorry – can't resist this.
All we are saying...
Is give Piers a chance..
Subject: Speech Rachel Scott's (killed at Columbine) Dad gave last Thursday to some legislators
Pass it on……..
· Word's from a Father who lost his daughter in COLUMBINE 12 YEARS AGO!!
Guess our national leaders didn't expect this. On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of...
Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.
They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness.. The following is a portion of the transcript:
"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers."
"The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart."
"In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA – because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent."
"I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy, it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best."
Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!
"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs - politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts."
"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA - I give to you a sincere challenge.. Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone! My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"
– Darrell Scott
i know, it sounds hokey!! but why not try it. what has happened to you...
Piers should look into this Newton-based gun lobby group, NSSF. Huffington Post just did a piece today. NSSF plans an annual gun show in Vegas. The 2013 one is scheduled to take place in mid-Jan. The group seems as tone-deaf as NRA is. NSSF thus far plans to press ahead with their gun show less than a month after the shooting. I hope the media puts its scrutiny on it. One of the lobbying firms they hire in DC is Orion Strategies, headed by a former John McCain staffer. I am surprised it took the media this long to find out NSSF's connection with Newton.
Why kill people with a gun of any kind? You could get in trouble and go to jail. So much better to kill people with an oil rig, then all you have to say is " I just want my life back " and all will be forgotten. Then you could go yachting. Take a lesson from BP.
Dear Fellow Americans,
Over the last week since the horrific tragedy in Newtown, I have spent more time on the internet reading blogs than I ever have in my entire life. I love the fact that this great country we live in gives us the freedom to state our opinions and debate with one another. Although I have seen some ridiculous posts from people, I have also read some truly good ones. I am not sure if I am in the minority here or not, but I am very concerned with the way this country is headed. I am not concerned from a political stand point, budgets, fiscal cliffs, unemployment, etc. Those issues will always be looked at by different sides in different ways. And although they do have profound effects on this country, there is one issue I feel gets the back burner. That my friends is MORALITY.
We have become a nation that is no longer concerned about simple everyday things in life. Everyday little things that previous generations held sacred. A hard days work, family dinners, Sunday worship are just a few. These everyday little things were never interrupted by cell phones, text messages, Facebook posts, Ipods, Xbox, reality telvision, and many other things that have consumed and taken over "family life". These generations didn't look for free handouts. They didn't expect life to be handed to them on a platter. If they wanted something, they went out and worked for it. If they didn't get it, they kept working some more. They didn't give up and throw a tantrum, because they knew society would not give in. When the going got tough, they hiked up their big boy pants and got it done. They understood that life isn't fair. They understood that they may not make as much money as their neighbor, drive the same car, or take the same vacation. But they still worked hard every day, without complaining and concentrated on making their little piece of the "American Dream" their own. They didn't do things for others because something was in it for them. They helped those who couldn't help themselves, protected those who couldn't protect themselves. They put the needs of their children, family members, neighbors, co-workers, and fellow Americans ahead of their own. They made this country what it is today because of the simple little moral things in life that they chose to hold dear. Society today holds the release date of the new IPhone, Jersey Shore, and Facebook more sacred than taking the time for a family sit down dinner and conversation. This doesn't have to be the way of our generation. We can take the little things and insert them into the busy lives we all lead, and I promise it will make us all better people. I understand we don't live in a perfect world, but the bottom line is this: Everything that affects and shapes society today, all of it starts at home.
Geoffrey Canada forgets his slave ancestors were not allowed to own guns and thus couldn't revolt against slavery. He also forgets that even after slavery was abolished, "The Man" passed gun laws restricting the black population from owning and carrying guns.
Marc, trust me, I would have felt much better holding you in front of myself and my family as a shield against the intruder. Perhaps i could have thrown you on him while we escaped to safety. You know, there never seems to be a guy like you around when you need him.
Gotta love the commercial with Suze Orman driving recklessly down the city streets with her new car. Maybe they should have added some children and little old ladies running for their lives for better visual affect.
A criminologist on cnn live just said that arming teachers will kill some 40 people per year from accidents. The number of people saved per year if teachers were armed will exceed the number of people killed by accidents. Therefore, teachers should be armed.
My niece goes to school And my brother used to go to the same school where cops have been there since 911 everyday and every after school event and yes the idiot on CNN live just said that 40 people a year would die from accident alone yet nobody at my nieces school ever die except for former classmates that died at Virginia Tech where it was a gun free zone sounds like more left wing idiot to me who have no clue
You can't be serious.
rdecker if you are referring to me yes I am serious
I wasn't, but based on your incoherent, punctuation-free rant, that same comment applies to you.
What part didn't you understand. You go to school everyday were cops are. And you're 100 percent safe. You go to a college for a few months. somebody with a mental problem killed you. Everybody felt bad for the loss of the students maybe if there is a cop there too. That student might still be here today.
the ban on assault weapons expired in 1994 so why compare the mass shooting during the period they were banned to the mass shooting since the ban expired.
The AR-15 was not included on the assault weapons ban that was in effect. You'll have to ask Dianne Feinstein (sp?) why that is. She always leaves that part out when she is spouting her nonsense.
Personally I could not live my life to its fullness being paranoid about crime and the government. This talk about the government is coming for our guns is uneducated/ under-educated paranoid rubbish. What we are witnessing in America is lunacy at its highest level being supported by immoral business people who would sell all of us on the same lots including with their very own mothers if it meant they could make more money selling bigger and deadlier guns . What so idiotic is these citizens in this country don't have the intelligence to recognize how they are being smoke and mirrored into living their lives in fear by the NRA greed machine. If your not living in reality your not really living and the sooner the government with the support of wise and educated American get these mass murdering assault weapons off the streets and tax the hell out of the bullets with limited purchase amounts the sooner this country will start to see gun deaths and gun injuries fall. I can't believe that grown you know what men are so paranoid that they are willing to sacrifice the children of this nation safety just so they can fill secure in their caves. By the way human beings play the same video games, watch the same movies and have just as many mentally ill people in their populations as America yet their murder and injury rate pales in comparison to America. So low its an insult to these other industrial nations to be mention in the gun debate by the NRA. For the greedy money making fear raking NRA to blame everyone and everything under the sun without mentioning that America cup over runneth over with guns is immoral and insulting to intelligent citizens in this nation. In fact it makes the NRA as a organization nothing less than a support system for mass murderers. Guns aren't the only problem but there is one more serious factor that continues to be over-looked when it comes to the paranoid reason why so many guns are being sold in America. Its call education or the lack of. The number of under-educated citizens in this country contributes to many of this nations problems. The sheer number of under-educated American over 55 in this nations continues to lead to bad policy and lunatic governing by the GOP. When you hear people say that the president is not an American or Iraq had something to do with 911 you can bet the house these are some of the the same under-educated paranoid citizens who believe the government is the enemy. I for one am glad that America appears to be pivoting away from a generation that despite being hard working and contributed much to this country, but whose lack of education, ism's and reasoning skills continue to lead to immoral and greedy politicians being elected who could care less about them as citizens beyond their votes and even lesser when it comes to their grandchildren. Sad but true?
This is such stupid argument. People kill people "not the guns" Take away the assault rifles? Any idiot can have a pocket full of 8 round clips and change them out in seconds! Criminals will still have the assault weapons as they are already in the market place. The price might be higher on the "black market" but they don't care about laws. Look at some of the worst killings in US history that had nothing to do with guns, but everything to do with mental illness!
Whats next Piers? Lets outlaw ALCOHOL! According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 32,885 people died in traffic crashes in 2010 in the United States (latest figures available), including an estimated 10,228 people who died in drunk driving crashes, accounting for 31% of all traffic deaths last year.
THERE ARE 10,288 dead people because of choices "PEOPLE" made! I am sure if you outlawed ALCOHOL many of those would still be alive. Next topic please!!!
Wow..What a good idea! As someone who was injured by a drunk driver...That sound like a great idea!
According to the United Nations Committee on Drugs and Crime, the United States has more firearms in civilian hands than any other country in the world! In the Entire WORLD!! That is a rather telling statistic ... until you read the entire report. It turns out that study also shows that the United States is 28th in the world for murders committed with firearms! Yes, there are 27 OTHER countries that have more firearms murders per 100,000 of population than the United States. This should cause a moment of reflection for those who rant about how this is the most dangerous country in the world because of guns. It should ... but I'll bet next years taxable net that it won't. There will always be a Piers Morgan around to interrupt and belittle invited guests who come with facts to counter his cherished opinions, and there will always be a media outlet willing to give such a person air time; rabid pseudo-intellectual babble sells. Especially when that babble has a "charming" English accent, even though it emanates from a Carnaby Street suit stuffed with naught but hot air.
How is it that a criminal like Piers Morgan is even working for CNN? He was fired by the BBC and rightfully deserved to be hung. He propagated complete fabrications in 2004, stating that British Soldiers were torturing Iraqis. We'll never know how many British Soldiers were killed because of his fabrications. When it was proven that the photos were utter fabrications and not even possible, he refused to apologize.
That's okay right?
Mr. Morgan must go.
Fabrications??... What a stupid comment... Read this and do the world a favor by not talking publicly about things you don't know and can't even google...
Tracking the effects of stricter gun controls within a single country is a better way to judge the effect of gun contra laws than comparing different countries. Comparing rates between different countries leaves too many variables other than gun control laws that might account for different homicide rates.
I would urge anybody arguing for stricter gun control to read this analysis of the effects f Australia's gun buy back and ban: http://www.gunsandcrime.org/auresult.html
Then tell us why a new Assault Weapons ban will do anything but make the uninformed feel good!
Newtown's Laws of Caution:
1. Every lunatic with easy access to guns tends to remain a clear and constant danger unless an external force is applied to relieve him of said guns.
2. The relationship between a maniac m, his arms and ammunition a, and the applied result, fatal F is: F = ma.
3. For every depraved action there has to be a whole lot more than an equal and opposite reaction.
Illegal gun trafficking is no different than illegal drug trafficking. Haven't seen control of that in my lifetime,
...and the Republicans want to cut?
Get a focus.
The Government does bot care or they would have done something about it 40+ years ago.
When will America wake up? Who must fall victim to this kind of tragedy before it wakes up?
There is only one solution and that is to ban gun ownership. What everyone who is against gun control is saying is that we should build a large pail to collect the drips instead of fixing the roof.
Maybe we should divide the country in half. All of us gun owners on one side, all of you anti gunners on the other side. Then we would see a great exodus of criminals from our side to your side where they know they can get away with their dirty deeds. Then our side would be totally safe, and we wouldn't have to listen to your horsecrap anymore. Also we would not have to concern ourselves with whatever happens to you stooges.
Divide the country in half..great idea! Lets hope all you gun trigger happy folks blow your side up before you get to us good guys on the other side !!!!!
I think that's an excellent idea. Deport everyone who insists carrying a gun to some remote island, or even better – the moon. There they can go on shooting each other as much as they like.
To answer the question of why someone would need a gun like an A R 15, let me clarify. It's a simple matter of the right tool for the job. If one wanted to drive a nail into a piece of wood, he would use a hammer. If he wanted to cut this same piece of wood, he would use a saw. The two are not interchangeable. If a single intruder enters your home with ill intent, a traditional Barney Fife style weapon might be sufficient. However, due to the fact that there has been an increase in crime, gang activity, ( growing larger every day ), drugs, alcohol , home invasions, and a whole host of other problems in this great country that we can't seem to curtail, the possibility of multiple perpetrators entering your home is very real. Should this event occur, one might choose a different tool with a little more power or capacity suited for the task. After all, you wouldn't cut your grass blade by blade with nail clipper would you? There you have it. Truth be told. Read it and weep anti gunners. Keep sticking your heads in the sand. good luck.
Right tool for the job?... You're quite a tool indeed...
James, Yes I have a tool, like a real man, and no you can't play with it, I don't care what color panties your wearing
And the tool does all the thinking and talking for you... ;)
James, I saved the life of my family and myself with my legally owned gun. I am grateful for my right to own one. Obviously you are an imbecile and I have better things to do then banter with the likes of you. And for the record, my tool will always have more intelligence than you. PS Merry Christmas!
Maybe you're more intelligent than me, but certainly not more 'intelligence'…
Anyway,… Happy Christmas to you too!
Mr. Morgan has armed security for himself – but thinks everyday US citizens should not be allowed to own a gun for their own protection – or the protection of others. Less then 4000 signatures remain to hopefully have you deported. CNN Criminal News Network has become nothing more then an outlet to try and shape public opinion by twisting the facts to fit the agenda of it's owners.
I agree with you wholeheartedly! Furthermore... while I once (pre-Treyvon Martin) thought that Morgan was reasonablyfairminded and unbiased, his calling the person he recently interviewed "unbelievably stupid" showed what a "unbelievably" pompous, arrogant, *** he is. If I'm ever unfortunate enough to meet him in person, I'll certainly tell him so!
When a terrible "gun event" like this happens, the news media almost universally falls all over theirselves in trying to prove how uninformed and naive they are when if becomes to firearms and the specifics relative to them... almost like me trying to describe a brain surgery or rocket repair procedure! They would be better served having a knowledgable "fact checker" review the stories before airing them, rather than looking as absolutely stupid as they typically do, and lacking all credibility.
As for me... I have sense enough to know that violent thugs don't attack in the presence of law officers, and that "cowering in a corner and hoping for the best" buys you little with these heartless, often Godless individuals. My family is too important to me to rely on a violent thug having any sympathy for me or my family's wellfare!
My heart goes out to the victims, survivors, and families of this tragedy.... I hope however that our elected officials don't fall prey to reactionism as they seek to come to terms with this terrible event.
People like Piers having to use an armed protection services in the US demonstrates only one thing:
It’s not possible anymore (in the land of the free) to openly state your opinion without having to fear being shot for it by some delusional goon. So much about ‘freedom of speech’ and BTW I seriously doubt those few signatures will bother Obama the slightest...
Well and if I had to choose between the two, I’d rather have professional protection services than civilian half-wits rooming around with more combined firepower than regular armies have in most other countries…
James, guys like Piers Morgan are the reason this great country of ours has laws against interbreeding. Notice: if you don't like our country, GET OUT!!!!!! I'll be more than happy to buy you a plane ticket. Real Americans like our founding fathers don't want you here any way. We're tired of your stupid opinions, and ideas stinking up our country. Who the hell are you to decide the fate of my family? If you choose to get yourself killed because of your own stupidity, knock yourself out. I for one won't miss you.
Mate, how old are you?... 10...?
Well, at least I didn’t need to listen another time to some bizarre stories about your ‘tool’, if you are a ‘real man’ (or not) – and you seem to have stopped fantasizing about my underwear… I take that as an improvement.
Don Lemon had a criminal psychologist on his show, one Richard Moran, who made a good point, one worth repeating. He said that most assassines aren't mad, I suppose, as in, dont know what they are doing, there is nothing very healthy about shooting a whole lot of people and so, what good would a background check do and as he is an expert on criminals, I should think that he knows what he is talking about when he says most assasines are mad.
Also, he pointed out that it was the mother of the assasine who had bought the assault riffles. not the assasine, so a background check would not have made any difference there either. He was not trying to defend irreponsible selling of guns but to point out that having guns around is bad, background cheque or no background check as far as I could tell from the tenor of his conversation that proved him to be no follower of the NRA.
Talking about psychology. It is suprising how people describe themselves in veiled ways The NRC man was talking about, what irresponsible people there are out there willing to cash in on everyone, and it seemed as if he was describing himself.
A lady at the bank said to me, that one of the security guards had said to her, when talking of arms, that if your burgler is moving, it is not easy to hit them with a normal gun that shots one or two bullets. I reckon most people freeze if someone points a gun at them. Maybe burglars know bettter and move around if you point a gun at them. However, her comment got me thinking about the art of self defense and made me more counscious of gun tecnique today while I whatched a film of vampires and werewolve, with a vampire girl who walked around shooting at alantropozs werewolves and the comment of my friend at the bank made me think of how much art as in skills there are in this sort of action and that got me thinking, maybe people want such weapons in order to play act such shootings at gun practicing units, how to hold steady and keep on shooting and how to follow a moving target while you yourself are also moving and while you whatch out to see if there are any other dangers around. It is often the difficulties of things, learning to overcome the difficulties that make an activity attractive. Difficulties can also make an activity too daunting. This is as far as I have got in an attempt to understand having fire arms. I think that it is cowardly to have something around that could be a danger to others. like. could turn your son into a mass murderer, just in case someone attacks you. in your home. rose macaskie
"Did you hear they passed more gun laws and now all of the guns we have are banned? I guess we have to gather them up and turn them in now. Here, help me hold this duffel bag open, will you? I want to turn them in as soon as possible." Said NO CRIMINAL EVER!!!!!!!
Don’t worry. US armed forces have great experience in disarming and demilitarizing entire countries and populations. They should be even more effective at home. They can handle that and if not, we can always bring in some UN peacekeepers from Nigeria or Rwanda. They clean the streets quickly and know how to deal with someone who doesn’t want to hand over his gun… ;)
Piers Morgan = Deportation = over 35,000 signatures.
DEPORT PIERS MORGAN NOW.
He is a criminal wanted in the U.K. for obstruction of justice.
PIERS MORGAN = NON AMERICAN = GO HOME!!!!!!!!
My ancestors, the Native Americans, illegally lost their land, so I've decided it's time for you to get off it, that means I get your house, land and anything else in your name...get out and go back to wherever it is YOU came from homie !
Might makes right, we killed the Indians fair and square, you are just a sore loser!
DOWN WITH ALL NON AMERICAN GUN HATERS.
YOU HAVE NO SAY IN AMERICA.
WE HAVE BEAT YOU ALL IN THE PAST AND WILL DO IT AGAIN.
Mate, no one outside even wants to have a say, nor any any responsibility in what's happening in the US. Yep, beating is apparently all there is for folks like you and that's your definition of the American way of life. So, carry on, shoot each other but do it over there in the US and stay out of other people's countries. Instead of coming to beat others, do stay where you are, build a wall around you and then the world will be a much better place for all mankind.
I agree, the remarks from some Americans on this forum are very mean. Stay there with your guns and anger. What makes you think we want your lifestyle? You only want other countries for their oil, water and land. Many are bullies and loud mouths. You cant even have a debate about gun control without name calling and ignorant rants. Those are the people who want to own a gun. They can only fight with a weapon, not a reasonable mind.
Mnay people makin comments mention the FREEDOMS that the 2nd amendment enables us compared to the Canadians, UK, etc.
For my discussions with my my kids, can you list these FREEDOMS that only we in the US enjoy?
Well when our fore Fathers wrote the 2nd amendment they knew that Government could not be trusted.
I am not sure if you live and see what I see everyday in America, but our leaders do not care about America.
They give our rights away to the UN and other countries.
They cannot even come together to keep our country running.
They cannot be trusted.
After the patriot act was sign into law, it gave our President the right to declare marshal law and disband congress.
Now if they took all the guns away, what would you do to take back your country from a dictator?
You could do nothing, and you would be no better than Russia or China.
But I guess that is what all of you want any way?
The only thing that stops a bad guy from killing someone with a gun – ISN'T another guy with a gun – BUT not having guns in the first place... That's a simple fact of life. Every half-educated person with a basic understanding of history knows that an arms-race results in insecurity and death – not peace...
Yes, As the saying goes, ‘Hitler, Stalin, and Mao agree …gun control works.’
Mate, that’s not even a saying... and exactly why I wrote ‘every half-educated person with a basic understanding of history…’
I see whats happening in our our America and travel so see others alos. I feel the unease. But which FREEDOMS (and RIGHTS) can I list to my kids?
I think you could explain to them that they can consider themselves very privileged. That they enjoy more freedoms and rights than most people in this world. But I think it would also be good to explain that these don’t come for free and in fact come with a lot of responsibility. First of all responsibility towards others…
Done with Pier's on CNN, no longer will waste my time watching during his segment. Hey Piers....take a long walk off a short American Pier. Done with this guy, not interested iin anything he has to say hence forth.
Why do you americans allow fire-arm-free zones?
Why do you allow expensive tax spendings to pay police?
If I understand NRA – officials, you need no official police paid by goverment but well armed civilians to protect the innocent.
Hurry up and carry on – our news in television here in germany are so boring without new massacres in USA.
What a bizarre comment…
Well, no matter what happens in the US, it won’t improve the pretty boring and single-sided news you get in Germany, that's for sure. Get the ‘Bild am Sontag’, troll off to the next ‘Kneipe’ and start a drunk argument with some random person about places & topics none of you two has a proper clue about. 'Prost' and ‘Frohe Weihnachten'...
Well, perhaps I have in my "Kneipe" (a very save place without guns and nuts) the opportunity to watch your fantastic "Fox-News" .
Not so single-sided than our news, of course, and well informing people to be "gods own country" ;-).
I was proud of the americans as part of the allied to free my country from the nazis 18 years before i was born.
I grew up in a free society influenced by american culture.
Nowadays, I ask myself if there are some things going wrong in the USA. No money for a basic health-care and for equal ediucation but keeping people dumb and insane enouch to spend their money first to buy a gun instead of good food or beeing able to get a good medication (wich may be more expensive than buy weapons).
But if you think this makes you the crown of freedom and mankind – carry on.
The generation of my granfather also thougt they were somethig special and better than other countrys – fortunately they failed.
Greece needs your capital. Enjoy your collectiveist boredom. Your leadership debases ours, you fool.
You're right. We have to help greece to kept the Euro and to repair their tax-system, of course.
Hope China will be intelligent enough carrying on to invest more in the USA so they kept their markets sane :-)).
All countrys are, as we say in germany, "in the same boat". To keep freedom, all countrys needed to be stable for themselfes. Wish you all the best.
If guns are the cause of mass shooting, why do they never happen at gunshows?
That's like asking for why there are no deadly traffic accidents at motor shows,... dooh,...
Everyone at the gun show is a friend and family. Anyone who is not at the gun show is the enemy..
Nothing is going to change in America. Even if assault rifles are banned, which is highly unlikely, the bad guys already have them. Plus you can still kill a lot of people with handguns. The massacres will continue and America will become a fortress. Its residents already suffer from an incurable siege mentality.
It's rather provocative to observe the real 'goons' are in the media and politics these days, aren't they? Liars every one of them.
They continually seek to undermine the God given liberty and responsibility of the American People. They work tirelessly to undermiine and subsume the lives of of their audience. And they laugh and chuckle and mock their audieance as they lie.
We already had war about this very issue of 'gun control' didn't we? And all you can do is laugh, chuckle, and mock that sacrifice? While misleading people that we're on a quest to arrive at some 'better place'? Are you insane?
You people have even deceived yourselves, haven't you?
Go back to Britain, Piers, you dummy, you're not welcome here any longer. And since you fawn over us Americans so much, take your liberty destroying, loser, lying nattering nabob friends with you.
Awesome!! :)) ... that comment is so 'off' - I can't but salute you :)
Good for you and yes, without those grandparents now it’s at least possible to express an opinion (no matter how relevant it actually might be) without getting shot for it.
But do get some nuts in your Kneipe. Try it sometime – they go really well together with a cold beer. I like salted nuts best. Nearly as good as ‘Salzstangen’…
Hm, this is the CNN page. Fox News has their own website… I think… ;)
Of course CNN-Website. On Fox I'm not couraged enough to make a post...
I apologise for my first post, wich was a bit sarcastic. We live in a mostly open world today, opportunities like the www. makes it possible to get worldwide information and to make statements on them.
As a german civilian, I have first to worry about problems in my country, of course.
Why should I comment your problems then?
It's of course of the so called "globalisation". For my opinion, this is not only the economics, but also the race for the leading form of societys.
In the last 70 years the american society was the Idol of most people in the world. In some posts here I read old-fashioned comments about russia as an going-on enemy. The situation nowadays reminds me more at the USA Al-Capone than at the commies. Actually, the russian goverment discuss if they shall allow weapons for everyone with less regulation like in USA. Putin also build up a special relationship to their church to get more backening by their people. No free curches of course, more than a state-church. But with similar effects. So if you point out at the russians as an further enemy, you point at yourself.
To be an idol as a society the next 70 years, it needs more to offer than a wild-west-picture. This picture is not longer unique, it is copied by others with not-so good-minded-reasons (for ex. Putin).
As a foreigner, I won't tell you how to organize your society. But as a grown-up fan of the post-war america, i hope that you find a moderate way also in the aktual discussion of gun-owning. Keep the right to have guns by better controlling not only by buying a gun, but also by better licenses and taxes to own them, for example.
I'am bored of reading about only two opinions – yes or not – without trying to find solutions with may help both sides. Finding a compromise would help to give a better picture of USA in the world – for the next 70 years.
And now – wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year.
Fair enough ☺
Enjoy Weihnachten and a peaceful 2013
I can only say that I am happey to be back in Europe where people are not perfect but are not as naive, gun crazy and religious fantics as they are in the USA.
The USA is a young country with "young" people who will need anotehr 100 years to grow up......
Hold on to your job. You are rattling the tree and by the response of things you are right at the heart of it...
I am a conservative democrat, i.e. politically moderate. I am an avid CNN watcher, 4-6 hours a day.
I find Piers and his show repulsing. I do not own any guns, but it is my right to do so, not just for deer hunting but to protect myself from tyrannical government. No matter the issue, this guy provides no facts, just his opinions. He is rude and uncouth and I am completely shocked CNN airs his program. It is so far below the level of most of the other programming on CNN.
It bothers me that CNN is airing a show that is so politically slanted, his show belongs on MSNBC or Fox.
I watch CNN for news and information, not tabloid commentary from someone with no vested interest in this country or the issue. I enjoy Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon, who often play devils advocate in order to get facts, but don't over load their shows with personal opinions.
News should be about providing information. I am an adult and can make my own opinions. I have really gotten fed up with Piers and his pontification. So long as he remains spouting his arrogance on CNN I will probably seek my news information else where.
@Sheet Metal Worker
Do you (realistically) think you ever need to protect yourself ie. with an assault rifle from a democratically elected US government? I mean the government of the country that is commonly seen as the most democratic and the so-called ‘land of the free’.
If you’d ever come to think this government is tyrannical (maybe because it is imposing taxes you dislike?), would you step out on the streets, fire rounds at its agencies and staff (police, army, etc), then move on to storm the White House? If so what then and since democracy clearly didn’t work, bring in a dictator, communism, warlord’s etc?
Don’t get me wrong – I am really trying hard to understand what this ‘need for armed protection from your government’ is all about…
Those who are 'repulsed' by watching Piers Morgan and other sensible CNN commentary should switch over to the Fox Network. Fox will match their IQ level much better and give them much more satisfaction..
First, I agree with everything Piers Morgan said the other day. I am a gun owner and I see the obvious. Something must be done about gun violence. The NRA is out of touch with reality. I refuse to join the NRA. They never have spoken for me nor do they represent me in any way, shape or form. They are fanatics that cannot see the forest fo the trees. After this latest incident to say put armed guards in schools instead of dealing with the real issue here is pure stupidity.
So now what?
NRA, and its sympathizers, would like to see a heavy machine gun immediately mounted on each fire truck?
I just wanted to say keep it up Piers! I think it's about time there was a voice like yours going out there and speaking truth to the gun situation. Too many in this country are either too polite, or not willing to raise the issue, and I applaud you for talking in depth about this! Keep it up. I, and many others are watching your show. Happy holidays and happy new year to you, your family and your hard working crew.
Don't give in!
"You're way too late for this one, but whats happening in Syria, could also happen over the boarders. Is Israel and Turkey going to wait until their own citizens are poisoned before they get involved? Quote: CAIRO - Several Syrians have died after inhaling poisonous gas released by government forces in rebel-held districts of Homs, local eyewitnesses and activists claimed Monday.
Civilians were admitted to hospital with serious breathing problems after Sunday’s attack, according to doctors and groups who posted what they said was video of the aftermath to YouTube.
The gas is thought to have been a concentrated irritant, but not one of the deadly chemical weapons stockpiled by the regime of Syria president Bashar Assad.
Claims by either side in Syria’s bitter civil war are almost impossible to independently verify because journalists are rarely allowed access to the country. Unquote.
Congratulations Piers. It's rather ironic that a Brit is trying to help Americans defend themselves against Americans! Such is life.
It is such a pity that most gun owners can't see the forest for the trees. They claim to love America and yet wish to place an extra judicial assassin in each and every school. What were they thinking?
It is ironic Ben that our lives here are so affected by bought politicians that our laws are based on hog hunting and nothing more. Everyone here needs automatic, or semiautomatic, weapons in their cars and homes coz somewhere out there there are hogs which need to be killed rapidly.
Just imagine the IQ level of this argument. No wonder the USA is now at the butt of everyone else's jokes..
I think what people outside the US want to see now is that America is dealing with this issue in a responsible, constructive and highly effective manner. That America is stopping this kind and level of violence, isn’t hiding behind outlandish ‘traditions’ and fear mongering lobby groups that do not have any place in a modern peaceful society and are nothing else but relicts of the Wild West and the militaristic Cold-War era.
I think people abroad want to see the good in America, see progress for the good of mankind, see that Americans care for others, care for their own children, that there’s something truly benign about being American and that America isn’t just about guns, crime, gangs, violence, aggressive foreign policies and military interventions. I don’t think that anyone living abroad wants to share this planet or trust people of a country in which everyone’s armed to the teeth and doesn’t care if hundreds of their fellow countrymen are being butchered every day as a result of it.
America not only needs to change for the sake of its future generation, but also for the generation that grows up in other countries and that otherwise might well come to see America as some evil empire one must be afraid of, maybe even fight against.
America already has the most powerful domestic security system and army in human history. America doesn’t need every citizen to be armed so it can be safe…
Right on Ben & Piers. Ben, well said. They, the pro-assault weapons people, are not thinking. Merry Christmas to all and I hope assault weapons are banned soon.
9,146 murders in the good old US of A in 2007. 41 in England and Wales. One country has gun control, one doesn't, guess?
It is gratifying to see your programs on the gun issue in this country and I really want to commend you for presenting your views, which I heartily agree with. Usually you are a pompous toffee-nose royal pain but you are totally right on this one. I am thrilled that CNN is drilling this point home. Keep up the good work!!
On behalf of Mothers and Grandmothers I thank you for standing up to gun lovers & cold hearted people in this Country, we need more voices like yours.
Thank you.Thank you Thank you.......
Mary , I totally agree..as a grandma of 6 beautiful children...this country needs to take at the second amendment. Maybe there should be another amendment to replace this one. Our children s rights to grow up and not be machine gunned to
death. And thanks for standing up for Piers....he is saying what our politicians should be saying...Yeah Piers!!!!
@ James at 3:35 pm:
Thanks. You expressed what I can't with my poor knowledge of your language.
In fact, I am not so pessimstic in the future of your society. You have managed things in the past and you will do so for the future.
I have not been in USA yet, but in my youth i had some good friends belonging to the USA Army stuff in Germany (Bad Hersfeld near Fulda). They were so open minded and interested in my country, i was glad to discuss about everything with them. They learnd some things about our culture and history, so i did about yours. This I sometimes miss when I read some repeadingly posts here about european countrys.
But on the other side my former relationship helps me to argue today against those in Germany who reduce the picture of the USA as it is shown by NRA-officials.
You had been in Germany? You knew some special words like "Kneipe" or "Salzstange" ;-).
So you have some wider mind than I can tell my own.
Thank you for your statement.
We support the ban on assault weapons and large capacity magazines. There is no need for these weapons for mass murder in the hands of non-military or police.
Thank you George. Intelligent and responsible gun ownership does not include assault weapons and large caches of ammo. It is so easy to get a gun in this country and just as easy to use it recklessly. Thank you for speaking up!
So is the NRA going to pay for armed security guards? How about a tax on every gun in America. That tax would pay for security guards in every school. That would include guns that had already been purchased. We have to pay a license plate fee every year on cars we already purchased, so why not an owners fee for guns. The problems with guns in America is not just that they are easy to get, it's also that they are cheap to buy.
Hm, reading the news it seems as if this discussion is needed more than ever since people in America are now MORE THAN 20 times more likely to be killed by a gun than someone in another developed country as gun sales surge and 3 1/2 years of ammunition magazines being sold in just 72 hours:
Some people fear certain guns might be banned and in response buy even more and stock up ammo? Let’s not just ban them but also scale up penalties on illegal possession of firearms, ammunition etc…
Mr.Morgan,You are a brave man to stand up to the goons.I am a responsible firearems owner and I DO NOT need assault weapons. We support you 100 % in your quest for responsible gun control.DO NOT back down from the small minority of guns extremist. The NRA doest not represent me in their more weapons policy.Mt second amendment is protected without them. Please carry on your courageous fight for gun control.Thank you for instilling British common sense into the conversation
Finally, intelligent discussion. Thank you Jeffrey.
We Americans don't appreciate Piers lying to us about guns. He can at least be truthful instead of trying to win the ignorant public over with lies and deceit.
Thank you Jeffrey, seriously, Thank you! I knew people like you were out there! Spread the love!
Morgan, is an idiot and should move back to where he came from... By the way I do believe he is not a citizen and doesnt partake in the votes...therefore shut up!!! As far as his anger toward america is concerned, he's only mad because our great grandfather's kicked his great grandfather's asses in 1776.... SCREW YOU MORGAN!!!! GO TO HELL!!!
Thousands of Americans want Piers deported. Only problem, where to? The British don't want him either.
Nastiness and name-calling will not solve anything. Intelligent people discuss and are open to all sides of a debate. Please be civil and open-minded. Our country doesn't need to be further polarized.
Simple statistic – In terms of gun related deaths – America is in the same league per capita as South Africa.... does that make anyone feel good about the country in which you are bringing up your children ?
The world is watching this bizarre pantomime of people yelling to deport someone for daring to point out the obvious and yet America wants the world to regard it as a beacon of free speech and democracy... really people ....
Studying American history and not failing (like many Americans I know did!) I remember the WIld Wild West history and I'm just wondering if people remember how that turned out ? GunControlNow
@Jeffrey Loke and Mike C, thank you both for your gracious, common sense comments!! SOMETHING simply must be done about the rising number of gun-related deaths, many of them mass shootings, happening in our country! Glad to see someone with a huge platform like Piers Morgan is helping to highlight the issue. Hopefully, surely something can finally be done about it. Too bad it's taken the death of 20 babies to get us to this point.
There is no excuse for assault weapons and armor-peircing bullets in private hands. Thank you Piers Morgan fro standing up to the NRA!
People are dying, children are being murdered and the issue of gun control is still being debated, give a break!!!!!
"Guns don't kill people, people do."
This is an incomplete and frankly loony thought..
People kill people with any weapon or "tool" they can find. Guns just do a really good job with the deed.
To continue to allow a loophole in weapons registration and licencing (national gun registry is need) is foolishness. Owners and guns should be tracked, a database to include the purchase of ammunition for those weapons. strict laws in place to judge the worthiness of gun owners, etc.
I could go on but this information is already provided by a well throughout organization.
Check out the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
James, I told them that "they enjoy more freedoms and rights than most people in other countries" – and they asked me for exmpls of what we have compared to canadians and europeans? Help!
you have freedom to argue about it but everything depends on your leaders who will be controlled by lobbyists
You are in point of fact a just right webmaster. The web site loading speed is amazing. It kind of feels that you are doing any distinctive trick. Also, The contents are masterpiece. you have performed a wonderful process in this matter!
Your ancestors tried to take guns away from my family in Ireland, please tell us how well that idea worked for the British Government? Your so sure that taking guns away from law abiding citizens is the right answer, your more than welcome to be the first through my front door.
If you want the guns so bad, I'll make sure you have the ammunition too.
This same feeling was expressed much more eloquently many years ago:
A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.—George Washington
America isn't Britain or Ireland or India.....don't try it here.

Perhaps one way to mitigate the 'gun culture' is to ban political contributions from businesses that make, distribute or even sell weapons and ammunition. Politicians are influenced by those who help fund their campaigns. So, if they aren't beholding to someone maybe more rational decisions can be made to protect the citizenry.
Piers, you are now getting a lot of attention ... so good for you! At truth's expense. For example, your gun audience ratings rants are obviously going up and winning a potential new audience ... but did you mention, "Connecticut already has an assault weapons ban. Sec. 53-202c. Possession of assault weapon prohibited. Class D felony." NOW you want to attack the Bible. You are a fantastic example of media. "Give enough rope and a person ..." etc.
I watch less of CNN in the last few years due to the lopsided views spoken by their show host. I do go there for some breaking news but have to leave when they go past the news and begin making their personal views to the public. Where do they get some of these people they hire. I know CNN likes to be world news organization but do they have to constantly bash america. As far as the nuts killing innocent people, I think glorification of their name in the news is the number one reason for their action.
There have been many discussions about strengthening gun laws, however, for millions of Americans, including myself, who are currently gun owners, perhaps a discussion of sensible gun ownership is more in order. Suggestions for gun storage alternatives may prove helpful and maybe even save a life.
Perhaps our law enforcement and medical and mental health professionals could take the lead in advocating for sensible gun ownership.
Go Piers! The crooked politicians and the NRA tell us how law abiding and of sound mind these nut jobs are in the Wild West because they are bought out. Name a country where a kid brings a gun to school? Then they blog how tough they are with guns the same day and same week of the shootings and buy more types of these guns used in the shootings to celebrate the kids and others death in the school.
Gun Control not about the welfare of our children, it is about control of the people so they can move forward towards their goal of a socialistic society where our Chinese owners will feel more at home.
On pp. 54 and 55, the majority opinion, written by conservative bastion Justice Antonin Scalia, states: “Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited…”. It is “…not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”
“Nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.”
“We also recognize another important limitation on the right to keep and carry arms. Miller (an earlier case) said, as we have explained, that the sorts of weapons protected were those “in common use at the time”. We think that limitation is fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of ‘dangerous and unusual weapons.’ ”
The court even recognizes a long-standing judicial precedent “…to consider… prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons.”

How sad it is to see the NRA run the U.S.A. It sure s going to be sad to see Pierce Morgan leave CNN. He was the only one who could make the NRA and its supporters look like the fools they are. So blessed and grateful that I don't live in the States! Come to Canada, Pierce!!!!
