Last month not long after the Sandy Hook tragedy in which a gunman went on an execution-style killing spree through several kindergarten classrooms with at least one assault rifle, the National Rifle Association held a press conference in which they suggested violent video games were the reason why such an event took place in the USA.

But the violent crime rate and overall homicide rate in Britain hasn't gone down. The reported level of gun crime in Britain has almost doubled in the last 10 years, since the gun ban was introduced. Furthermore, most of Britain's closest western European neighbors are some of the largest gun owning nations on the planet. Switzerland, Germany, and France are ranked globally 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively in terms of private firearms ownership, and yet despite these high gun ownership numbers these countries have per capita homicide rates that are nearly 40% lower than Britain, that has a de facto ban. The Swiss own nearly 8 times as many firearms as the British, most of which are automatic assault rifles, and the Germans and French own nearly 5 times as many. If you subscribe to Morgan's argument that more guns mean more crime then these countries should have significantly higher homicide rates than Britain, but they don't.

      The UK's Daily Telegraph reports:

The total number of violent offences recorded compared to population is higher in Britain than any other country in Europe, as well as America, Canada, Australia and South Africa.

The UK had a greater number of murders in 2007 than any other EU country – 927 – and at a relative rate higher than most western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

        CR.
The figures you quote for the UK and US are not comparing apples for apples. The FBI statistics do not count all violent crimes on those above a "serious" threshold whereas the figures quoted for England and wales is for all violent crime. Numbers collected from the Bureau of Justice collect all data and are therefore can be used for comparison.

The UK violent crime rate for 2009 2000/100,000 of population
The US violent crime rate for 2009 2,250/100,000 of population

        1. Both societies are depressingly violent but not far apart
        2. UK Homicide rate is 1.02/100K of population
        3. US Homicide rate is 5.3/100K of population
        4. UK Gun homicide rate is 0.08/100K of population
        5. US Gun Homicide rate is 3.6/100K of population

Although both societies are generally more violent than other comparable countries. The easy access to firearms increases the risk of a firearm being used to attempt to murder. Guns are good at killing people, therefore your homicide rate is higher, as is of course your gun homicide rate.

In the UK the debate has never had any political angle to it. We do not have any major arms manufacturers selling to consumers (I think we may be in the top 5 arms sellers but to governments, and yes we have done some dodgy deals but lets stay on topic). US arms manufacturers have a responsibility to their share holders to maintain or grow profits. This skews the debate as your politicians have been put in a difficult position by the funding the manufacturers provide to the economy, American jobs, tax dollars and campaign funding.

Violent crimes and gun crime have had a dramatic reduction in the UK.

I don’t think that anyone is “coming for your guns” but there will be change.

Background checks and mental health status for owning guns should be entirely mandatory and retro active. Alex Jones appears to be mentally unstable. The idea of him holding a gun is terrifying. His mental health is very questionable having seen Piers interview with him.

I didn't think Alex Jones was crazy .... he was absolutely insane and to think that there are thousands more like him hiding in cells alllllllllllllllllllllll over this country just sitting and waiting and getting ready to blow .... that is frightening ......

It is a very sobering thought for sure. I am very much a gun owner and we hunt and fish. All the meat we eat is wild game with the exception of chicken that my wife must have. So, we are not anti-gun and are very familiar with weapons of all types. That being said, Alex Jones with a gun makes me a little afraid.

Some comments here make me feel that there are irresponsible people making comments. The like in saying that Mr.Morgan should go back to England, why? People who make such comments seem not to as yet get the message in all of this. If 20 little innocent kids, and 6 adult people being slaughtered isn't making a dent into your skull, you need medical attention, and probably locked up into a psychiatric facility.

Mr. Morgan, or Piers if I may so address you.

Not sure you will receive this POST, but hoping you may.
As a parent and grandparent, my heart too goes out to all those that have lost a loved one during any tragic event as recently as the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
As tragic as ALL shootings are, we as a society seem to lose track on ALL violent acts against humanity. We become perhaps desensitized with all that is going on in the world.
After doing some research myself, I have found the following:

IN 2011, NUMBER of DEATHS in EACH AREA in the USA.

    1. 323 by assault style rifles
    2. 496 by (yes) Hammers
    3. 650 by (yes) Knives
    4. 12,000 by Drunk Drivers
    5. 195,000 by (Yes) Medical Malpractice by doctors

How many deaths do you think Obama care will give us, if we are at 195,000 today without?

We can never lose sight as to the tragedy of innocent children or adults being killed randomly by whatever means, but perhaps we can do a real story on the 12,000 Drunk Drivers and 195,000 Medical Malpractice deaths that occur each year.
Would love to watch a segment on your show talking about each one of cases above.

    Regards,

    Michael Roebuck

According to FBI statistics 323 "RIFLE" deaths (NOT "assault rifles"). NOT ALL 323 "rifle" murders were by assault rifle. NOT ALL were civilians pulling the trigger. An "assault weapons ban" is a witch hunt. Alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceuticals each kill more people every single day of the year than all year long using a rifle, http://goo.gl/JzGgL

Michael ... yeesshhhh ... how convenient that you forgot to mention that deaths due to guns in 2011 totalled 9,146 (let me write it out for you: nine thousand one hundred and forty-see) .... oh ... and by the way, since MADD (Mothers Again Drunk Drivers) began way back when and the killing by drunk drivers has declined drastically due to "LAWS" .... imagine what can be with "LAWS" and banning of the assault style rifles can also do ... AND I think people who continue to back up the selling of assault guns/rifles could give a crap about those kids so please don't pretend you care .... maybe someday you'll be in "their" shoes and find out how it feels ... I think every gun advocate should sit down with the parents of these kids .... worse part is that it's going to become more common unless something is done .... I think we Americans should be ashamed of what is happening here .... I know I am ....

I don't have any problem at all sitting down with those parents. I'll be more than happy to talk to them at length about gun laws or gun control. That's because I make decisions based on logic, not emotion. I have a dog in this fight, in 1982 during a road rage incident, I got shot. In Texas at the time, I didn't have my weapon with me as it was illegal to carry it in my vehicle, that however did not stop the shooter. If I had been allowed to to carry mine, the outcome would have been different.

I was shot by a criminal, and I was unarmed because of the laws. Sorry, gun laws didn't stop him, didn't stop Columbine, didn't stop Newtown and imposing more laws on the law abiding won't make a difference to the next nutjob hell bent on a massacre.

What REALLY incences me? How Eric Holder of ALL people, can justify sitting on a committee that is talking about how to control guns.....really?

When you get a dog in the fight, come talk to me, we'll debate, seriously and respectfully. But, once you start calling names...all bets are off.

Until you become a victim yourself you don't have clue. A friend of mine lost both his parents in a home invasion. They were unarmed.

Let’s say the congress and house both pass tough gun control laws. It is political suicide because it will mobilize the gun owners and create a voting block that would remove every one of them. It happened the last time and it would happen again.

11/15/2012: "There are already rumors about confiscating automatic weapons from gun shops. Taking weapons from your citizens will be the first signs of a coming takeover of America."

9/8/2012: "After many gun incidents that have been staged, your authorities will first outlaw automatic guns and then all guns. They will send out armed troops to go house to house in order to confiscate all weapons."

9/5/2012: "My people, you have now recorded seven or more incidents of gunmen killing people, and most of them killed themselves later. These events are not just by chance, but it is part of a plan to cause an excuse to try and take away people’s weapons. Many of these attacks used automatic weapons which is one of the targets for your authorities to remove. I have told you before that you can place chips in people, and with voices, you can cause those people to kill people without remembering their crime. These events are more than arbitrary killings because these gunmen are well armed, and they even have body armor. The one world people know that it is difficult to take over a country with well armed citizens and militias. So their intent is to use any excuse to try and disarm your citizens. This is why you will have chaos and a revolution because many people will not give up their arms."

8/15/2012: "The one world people are planning for a takeover of America, and it is their plan to try and remove your guns by any means. Before the election the liberals are afraid to lose any votes to the strong gun lobby. After the election you may see Presidential Executive Orders to try and remove your guns. Hitler did this same gun removal to take over Poland."

These excerpts were from the messages that Jesus gave to a seer John Leary.

Now maybe there can be some calm discussion on the subject from both sides of the issue. There is no need to jump to the most extreme conclusions, some people, even myself sometimes, need to take a step back and analyze the situation and use adult communication skills. Know that not everybody will walk away happy.

We are in trouble as a nation. We need a dialogue w/o the posturing and accusations. We need to keep our children safe, build a sense of faith and trust NOT arm everyone. Keep your guns but responsibly and do something about mental health. We as a nation need to admit our MH is poor at best. Scary. Let's get real and make a safer society. This. Should NOT be swept under the rug. We need mental health plus safety for all gun owners to be emphasized with background checks. Piers Morgan has opened a discussion that needs to be continued. My question to all of you is to think about what kind of society we want to build? One where our children attend school with trust, play carefree because tragedy a are not occurring regularly or one where they see armed guards on a daily basis and come to believe that is how life should be.

I live in Sandy Hook, CT and I have a child who attends Sandy Hook Elementary. I am very lucky that my child made it out of the school alive and very grateful for that. I have been following the debate on gun control over the past month and feel that something must be done. A ban on high capacity ammo clips, universal background checks, and a meaningful ban on assault weapons is a start. The current "ban" in CT cannot be a model for a ban in the US as these weapons can be bought legally in our state with certain modifications...none of these modifications diminish the power or capacity of the weapon...these type loop holes in a federal ban would make it completely ineffective. I believe in the 2nd amendment and believe people have the right to bear arms with restrictions that are reasonable. When I think back to that horrific day in our town and listen to the gun debate day after day their is one fact that I always come back to...the weapon used in our elementary school did exactly what it was designed to do...THAT IS THE PROBLEM...These assault weapons are designed to kill many accurately and in a short amount of time...how can this be acceptable for civilian use? I understand these steps in gun control will not completely eliminate the threat of a Sandy Hook from happening again and also understand the argument that people who want to do harm will do it regardless of the ban but that is not an excuse to do nothing. To throw up our arms and say "A ban won't keep everyone safe so what is the point" can't be our response.
