State Sen. Stacey Campfield on his 'assault pressure cooker' joke: "We're talking about an inanimate object that does nothing by itself"

As Bostonians and the rest of the nation continued to heal from the Boston Marathon bombings, "Piers Morgan Live" spoke to state Sen. Stacey Campfield who defended his controversial joke about pressure cookers in the wake of the bombings.

The Tennessee Republican lawmaker posted a blog with a picture of an "assault pressure cooker" under the blog caption, "Here comes Feinstein again," likely intended to mock Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s defeated proposals on an assault weapons ban.

"We're talking about an inanimate object that does nothing by itself," said Campfield comparing a firearm to a pressure cooker. "It does absolutely nothing by itself just like a pressure cooker does absolutely nothing by itself."

"The joke was really about the left and how they push for gun control on inanimate objects just like pushing for spoon control for obesity, it doesn't do anything."

Watch the clip, and listen further, as Campfield asks Morgan, "Now that gun control has failed, Piers, I'm wondering when are you going to move back to England?"

    Hey, Piers,

Keep up the fantastic, unfailing, courageous work. Keep unmasking these astoundingly obtuse "law makers". Seems there are lots in the line up.

I just went online to find out how much Senators are paid annually. Turns out (if the data is correct) Mr. Campfield is pulling down around 174k/year. Sizable sum considering the average median American household income hovers around 50k/year. While America seems galvanized in mourning the tragedy in Boston, it’s odd Mr. Campfield takes this opportunity to use the tragedy for political means via a very bad joke. I certainly hope Mr. Campfield is making his posts and jokes on his own personal time. I’d hate to think we’re paying his salary for his brand of humor. Perhaps a better use of his time might be a focus on national security to ostensibly prevent the type of horrific events we watched unfold in Boston.

Kelley, You researched the wrong position. He is a state senator in state government. He is not one of the two senators elected by the state to serve in the federal senate. Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander are the senators for the state of TN. By the way, take a look at the average income for a federal government employee which is in the $80K's range. Want to talk about appalling, we're paying their salaries and ringing up a trillion dollars in debt every year!!!

Saw Pierce interviewing Campfield and Ball this week. What they tweeted and commented was nothing to get too excited about. I don't think there are many who would be too concerned about the legal rights of these 2 brothers based on their heinous behavior. If it could actually be shown that torture would work to extract information that could save lives or track down other terrorists then so be it. Also, for Campfield to infer that pressure cooker bombs are not the problem, but rather those who make them and use them to kill and maim innocent people, is not particularly profound but I suppose true. Attempting to relate it to the gun debate , however, was rude and down right stupid. These two Senators should have never agreed to be interviewed by Piers Morgan. It brings to mind that old saying "Tis' better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and leave no doubt". If these 2 Senators are representative of the rest of the Republican Party ... God help us. Perhaps the USA is in need of a third party ... the Republicans seem intent on making themselves irrelevant.

His point was that none of these objects kill people, it is only the criminals who misuse them. Did no one go to school and learn that you look for the meaning of what people say or is only when you do not agree with them. ARGUE his point that criminals kill people not the object. How many people do you think have guns who shoot and have never even been hunting? Guns still do not kill. Put one one the table and it will not hunt someone down! Debate the point!!

Your argument is totally absurd. Let's see ... knives , guns, hand grenades and bombs don't kill or injure people ... so let's provide every American with MORE OF THEM.

I got my gun and had to go through that – what's new? Wake up world – times they are a changin'. Bottom line is – do you think think a guy wanting to do harm in a GUN FREE zone will be more attracted to this GIN FREE zone – or go to a police station where there are plenty – path of least resistance. NO GUNS.

Wake up people – Benghazi, Saudi's getting off the hook, bringing kids in to get support for gun control – you need to info up and watch both sides – you will see clearly after you look at where our country is heading. And, it ain't good.

Don't mean to use one myself, but how can you people not see the fallacies that Piers uses in all his "arguments"?
He says that pressure cookers can be used to cook things. What other things can guns do besides shoot things? What kind of question is that? Both of these objects are tools that people use at their own discretion. What would you say if I asked what else could a pressure cooker do except cook? Its the exact same question Piers pulled out of his own ass. And what kind of argument is if you carry around bombs you will be safe. What is cringe worthy is how ridiculous Piers Morgans sounds. Just like what he said about Australian shootings. In 2002, the Monash University shooting occurred in Melbourne, Australia in which 2 people were killed and 5 others were wounded. Even with the gun control policies that Piers loves so much.

This blowhard is Tennessee's version of Texas' Ted Cruz. Both are big mouthed, arrogant blowhards, who live to do nothing more than start chit with the most inflammatory statements and actions they can think of. Typical tea party rhetoric. The GOP has completely lost control of it's people at a state level, even the ones that come to Washington. To even begin to fix the problems we have, first on the agenda is to destroy the tea party and if the GOP goes with it, so be it. C'est la vie.

Just because someone else does not think like you then they are hicks, stupid, racist, and whatever else the PARTY OF tolerance can think of to call people!! Such tolerance,we called that bulling in school, but that would not be what you call it because you are supposed to hate bulling! Until you can straighten your on feeble brain out then you do not need to talk about other people. Camp field left New York because they did think like him. I wish we were still searching for weapons of mass destruction, including pressure cooker bombs. Even though they are illegal, people still use them to kill and mame en mass. I wonder if guns were illegal, would criminals just use something else? Although bombs are illegal, people still use them. I'm curious about what percentage of criminals using guns, use legal guns vs illegal guns. Does anyone know where I can find out?

What exactly is wrong with background checks? If you aren't a nut or a criminal, you'll get your gun and keep the ones you already have. Why is it harder to get a driver's license than it is to get a gun? That's simply warped. How tragic is it that people from any state could elect such a fool as this senator? He is not even fit to organize as 3 year old's birthday party. I wonder if he ever considered the victims or the families of the victims and their feelings before he ran off his big mouth. In the next election he has, his opponent should just replay this stupid and callous remark over and over again. The folks of Tennessee couldn't be such knuckle draggers as to elect this failure again.

Morgan is also a disingenous, gotcha-try interviewer. Tonight, he asked his guest, what can pressure-cookers do other than kill people? Answer: cook food. His follow-up question re guns should have been, what can guns do other than kill people? Allowing the answers, hunt, target practice, self-defense, etc. But instead his follow-up question was, what can guns do other than shoot? That took his less-sophistacted guest off guard, who continued with a bad answer. That makes Morgan feel quite clever, no doubt, but it makes him a deplorable interviewer in the event truth is the objective.

Nice try trying to sugar-coat it, but guns are only used to shoot, whether it's targets (which make you a better killer), or self-defense (which make you a killer), or hunting (which make you a killer).

So, are you against self-defense??? Guns are designed to “incapacitate” predators, either enraged animals or criminals or mad men, yes, by sometimes killing them, but unfortunately in some cases, that is the only way you can "stop them from killing you" and/or the people you want to protect (that could include children)!!!

Its tradgic that most people who buy a gun automatically think they have a liscence to shoot first and ask questions later! you also need safety classes to learn how to work that GUN!

It must have been really hard to always be in fear for your life. You must have seen so many "normal" things crafted into and used as weapons. The Boston bombers used pressure cookers to build bombs. Some think its people that build things with the intention of harming others, who are dangerous; not the object itself.

The Senators comment was insensitive. You were worse. YOU breed hate. Just the way that you handle people; walking on them, and being generally rude too them, simply because they hold different views than them- makes me hate you. I digress. I think it is important to note that dummies like this senator demonstrate clearly that this government has too many misfits in it. How he isn't immediately fired and relieved of his duties shows the clear lack of oversight. Can anyone imagine possibly saying this ridiculous comment to any of these victims? The honorable state senator showed poor debating skills. As a journalist you showed your eagerness to showcase such debatable view points. If firearms were to have the same safety features as pressure cookers(PC) we could have saved this time for something more useful cause. It is impossible for PC to explode with many safety features. Even the most stupid/insane people can not misuse and make it explode. It requires technical specialists to disable these safety features in a PC, may require few days and lot of reading/planning to do it. Most of the modern convenience devices can be misused to harm others. But we should build safety features as well as precise tracking to make them difficult to misuse. For the sake of public safety Govt should identify such devices and start tacking them from manufacturing to end use. The most distinctive features of firearms as compared to PC are, how instantly, conveniently, precisely, accurately firearms can be used to cause harms to others. This make them to be tracked with great care.

      Except that's not true.

Any and all of the safety features on a pressure cooker can be defeated in 20 minutes with a screwdriver, a hammer, some duct tape, and maybe some insulating foam. The trick is that the intent to defeat them has to be there; as safety features, you have to force them to fail in an unsafe manner. But it's not difficult.

In fact, it's pretty easy to make a variety of explosive devices with household chemicals. It's also possible to use other household stuff as ways to increase the devastation caused. With an internet connection, you may be only minutes away from being able to cause another attack like this for less than $100.

It is incredibly easy to make a bomb. They just tend to be made and used by people sending a message. Mass shootings are harder to predict, because they're often the result of genuine mental illness like anti-social personality disorder. Bombs tend to be worse though, as there is often no defensive posture one can take to address the problem with minimal loss of life. Thus, a bomb can go off anywhere, but a mass shooting tends to happen in a gun-free zone.

      Sorry, kind of rambled there.

Would just like to say that Stacey Campfield, regardless of what he claims, DOES NOT speak for the people of Tennessee. He barely even speaks for the people of his district. In fact, the only place in his district in which he polls well is a small, wealthy, conservative township on the edge of the city that likes to pretend it isn't part of Knoxville proper. He's not even FROM the state of Tennessee, but was born and raised in New York.

I am a native of Tennessee and live in a district just South of Mr. Campfield's. Without fail, every time he opens his mouth or blogs on his website, he incites disgust and fury from the majority of compassionate, level-headed Tennesseans. Even my very conservative, FOX news loving parents can't stand the man because of his heartless, tactless diatribes against everyone he thinks will get him a response. If I wasn't so determined that people should see what a terrible person he is I would sincerely wish we could stop talking about his hate-mongering because I know he just loves the spot light, however negative.

You certainly don't have to agree with me, or Mr. Morgan, politically, to recognize that this man is nothing but an ugly minded, attention-seeking politician who knows no shame. There are better ways to get your points across than stooping to the levels of Mr. Campfield.

I also wanted to mention that my uncle is a Republican State Representative here in Tennessee who has to deal with Mr. Campfield on a regular basis and has shared with me that most his fellow State Representatives and State Senators loathe Mr. Campfield because he makes them all look bad. They should try standing up for what the Tennessee people want from them. Campfield is elected by those people because they want him there.

I don't think he's saying guns would have save the bombing victims. I think what he's saying is that an inanimate object designed to cook a delicious meal was modified and used to kill 3 and greivously injure 130 in less than a second. He's saying it's an inanimate object, like a firearm; and was making a point that guns seem to be the only inanimate object blamed for the actions of an individual who chose to use it in a horrifying manner.

As for the question of when he will be going back to England, that was regarding a statement Piers made stating that if the universal background check legislation did not pass, he would leave the country in fear for his child's life. That being said, he likely wouldn't go back to England, where he was sacked from his last job for publishing a completely untrue story regarding the conduct of British soldiers in the Middle East. He doesn't always tell the truth; he goes after the controversy.

Are you concerned about public safety?? How about stricter alcohol control then? Not to mention alcohol-related violence, DUIs cause more deaths than guns. How about we change the law to require all drinkers (including occasional to moderate ones) be registered as an alcohol user and have a sticker as such on their car license plates, and give highway patrol officers the authority to pull them over anytime to have them take a breathalyzer test? Oh, and background checks every time anyone buys alcohol to make sure the buyer doesn’t have a history of alcohol/substance abuse. By the way, the cost of the registry and background checks should be shared by all the drinkers including responsible ones. Why do people scream only about the things the media sensationalizes and forget other things that victimize a lot more?

Hi, you all: Can anyone of you find the best ways to block, ban or hack the radicalized Al Qalda online magazine that teach wicked, cruel, immoral people how to make bombs to kill innocent people? Ban Laden, Al Qalda, radicalized terrorists are the ones we should criticize and blame for the Boston bombing tragedy. They came to our soil first and attacked us on 9/11. Do not fool by any other excuses these pressure cooker bombers claims. We feed and protect their family when they seek for asylum. If we angry with Piers, then we are shooting the WRONG direction.
Please remember that our ancestors were immigrants, if Piers needs to leave USA, then all of us need to go too(except native Indians). We need Piers's voice which will broaden our mind about gun control issues. Please look around the World or travel to other countries that disallow civilians to own the guns to observe for yourself. Those gun-controlled countries never have mess killing incidents. Once a while an insane person either kill a couple persons by a knife or himself just jump off the building if choose a violent acts, but never bomb on the street. Gun, explosive materials can and should be controlled or ban or limited if we really want to own a peaceful society.
We are not in the wild, wild WEST era anymore. Our democratic government is so solid and stable, there is no aggression or threat to citizens from the Government. Guns should be kept outside the city limits, not in the closets for our children easily to reach. Many unnecessary policemen or civilians gun deaths will be prevented. Gun owners should only go to designated gun field, park, hunting ground to play, just like golfers go to golf courses, dancers go to dancing studios, basket ball players go to gyms etc. Thanks for reading it and hope for a better and peaceful America !

Did you forget that criminals have guns and they don't follow the law? and police may not always come in time?

George, I have often danced in my house, in the streets, and many other places. I have played modified golf in parks, my back yard, school grounds, etc. The reason people say Piers should leave the country is because Piers SAID he would leave if he didn't get his way. This is just simply asking him to keep his word. Guns will never go away, so the most preventative measure is education on gun safety. It is human nature to be violent, even if it is not what works for society, so, taking away the rights of the honest law-abiding citizens, only leaves the innocent unprotected from the law breakers, who are most likely to commit these heinous crimes. When was the last time you heard of a law abiding citizen shooting up a school? movie theater? NEVER!! Adam Lanza tried TWICE to buy the weapons he desired, and was denied TWICE by the regulations that exist presently. That didn't stop him though, as he stole his own mother's guns, and killed her with them. Adding more regulation only makes the perpetrators think a little more creatively to achieve their intended goal, but does not stop the carnage that is the will of the killer.

..." What does that say about Australia? " I say," Thank God they haven't had a shooting since then." I hope and pray they never will become a target of ill will from ANY group or individual ...... in any place. I changed the channel. Too immature for such a serious topic, on both parts.

I live in Tennessee, and no, we are not all dieing for Piers Morgan to go back to England. We are, for the most part, hoping that Campfield gets ousted in the next election. He is an embarrassment to our state.

I don't get how this is relevant. Pressure cookers are not designed for the sole purpose of killing.

Hey, Duh, the statement was that pressure cookers were inanimate objects, that do nothing by themselves. What does a gun do without human intervention? I have had a rifle in my gun safe for many years, and i am happy to say, the rifle has not taken a life of it's own, and killed even a single life form. Is my rifle better educated than other rifles? No, the fact is, guns are also objects, that without human intervention, do nothing more than occupy space on Earth. If you disagree, then, by your same logic, pressure cookers are killers! Ban all pressure cookers! Next on our sordid agenda....Glass! Glass cuts people to ribbons, and without regulation, can be a killer

Hey, Piers, you promised America you would leave if the gun control bill didn't pass. Can I do anything to help you move? I find it hard to believe that a guy with your integrity would go against your own word, so, whatever I can do to help you along, please just say so.
