On the heels of shocking allegations out of Ohio, in which multiple people are accused of holding a mentally disabled woman and her daughter captive, amidst inhumane conditions, Tuesday's "Piers Morgan Live" offered the mother of one of the alleged captors an opportunity to share a different side of the story.
Using only the name "Becky," the guest spoke with Piers Morgan via phone, and refuted the account being presented by police and the press:
"The supposedly [sic] victim has been over at my house many a times for birthday parties, Thanksgiving, Christmas, you know ... no, none of this happened," said the mother of Jordie Callahan, one of the three people facing charges of forced labor.
According to federal prosecutors, the women were held in small quarters, along with various reptiles and a pit bull, while being denied food, and robbed of their government benefits and their dignity. "Becky," meanwhile, claims it was the mother who was responsible for the inhumane treatment:
"Jordie [Callahan] and Jessie [Jessica Hunt] heard the little girl crying a lot in the bedroom that they were at – not basement – she had a bedroom, and they would ask her why the little girl was crying so much and she'd make up different excuses," the guest told the "Piers Morgan Live" host. "They did put a monitor in there so they could see what was going on, and they used the cell phones so that they can, you know, record it off the cell phone from the monitor."
Tuesday's caller offered further explanation for the story that's quickly gaining national attention, insisting that the video recorded by her son and others refutes the woman's claims, and paints a far different picture than the one currently being offered by the authorities:
"They seen her kicking the little girl in the head and they called the police and turned the cell phone over to the police," said Becky. "Since the supposedly victim was put in jail for this, she knew she was in a lot of trouble, so she turned the whole story around making them think that Jordie and Jess had made her do all this and that wasn't true."

It's hard to tell, from the competing claims, who was guilty of more abuse in this case. Nonetheless, the most obvious outrage here is that a "mentally disabled" woman who needed care herself was allowed to keep custody of her daughter. Being raised by one's mother's caretakers, whatever their intentions, is a pitiful excuse for a childhood. The child should have been taken away and the mother should have been humanely sterilized.
