Amidst the stunning drama surrounding Usher Raymond's ongoing divorce proceedings and the near-drowning of his young son, on Friday "Piers Morgan Live" invited Ryan Smith and Alina Machado to offer their perspective on a day which saw the R&B singer take the stand in a Georgia courtroom.
Forced to defend himself against an emergency custody motion filed by his ex-wife, Raymond displayed composure, and Smith said it served him well:
"He was calm and it helped him show he was a fit parent. If the judge found the children at this point in time were in a life or death type danger, such that they needed to be removed from him and given to Tameka [Foster Raymond], that's what he would have ruled," noted the host of HLN's nightly news program "Evening Express," in explaining why the case was dismissed. "Usher's composure and calm under those circumstances as he portrayed, seemed to go a long way in the judge's sense."
An unexpected moment closed the day in court, as the parents of 5-year-old Usher Raymond V embraced following the ruling:
"It was interesting. I would say it was unexpected," said Machado, a CNN correspondent. "There was some question about whether she hesitated a bit and they hugged... It was a very unexpected moment to say the least."
