READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
Coming up this evening at 9, "Piers Morgan Live" revisits the ongoing discussion about marijuana laws. Twenty states have legalized marijuana, with two doing so for recreational purposes. Even Dr. Sanjay Gupta has changed his stance on the drug, the reasons for which he shares in his CNN special documentary "Weed." However, for every person pushing for the legalization of marijuana, there is another condemning it.
As part of an hour-long special on the United States' changing perceptions of cannabis, this evening Piers Morgan invites Neil Franklin and David Evans to present their individual insights and perspectives.
A retired state police major and current executive director of LEAP, Franklin has witnessed the drug battle first hand:
“It's a nightmare for law enforcement," he says as part of his interview on “Gone to Pot: America’s Marijuana Obsession.” "We have thousands of murders across this country every single year. We talk about the numbers of murders that we have in Mexico, but nobody is talking about the murders we have in this country."
Rather than perpetuate a violent cycle, Franklin suggests America legalize a drug that is currently classified as a schedule 1 substance, placing it in the same class as drugs like heroin and LSD.
In response, meanwhile, Evans calls the legalization of marijuana “a very naïve approach.”
“It's not just about legalizing it so you can have a joint at home in the privacy of your home,” explains Evans, a special adviser to the Drug Free America Foundation. "It will be a big industry and they're going to focus on the young people, just like alcohol and tobacco focuses on young people because if they get them hooked, they will have customers the rest of their lives.”
In it is a polarizing debate, and one that continues to energize the nation, regardless of which side of the issue and individual comes down on.
For the full interview with Franklin and Evans, and the entire "Gone to Pot" special, tune to CNN this evening at 9.

people like this evans person need to be deported to a fascist country or taken out and shot.
My opinion about the legalization of marijuana is that if alcohol is legal, than why can't marijuana be? Marijuana is PROVEN to have medicinal qualities, whereas alcohol only harms you. If our country allows harmful substances (cigarettes are well), than there is NO excuse legitimate enough to disprove the fact that marijuana is a better "substance" than the already legal alcohol and cigarettes. Period.
I bet if the results were available they would find the Drug, Alcohol, and tobacco companies are giving millions of dollars to keep the law makers from becoming legal.
the issue is freedom...
freedom is measured in terms of hemp
Piers is an Idiot. Your show tonight was poor journalism. You cannot adequately do justice to three major drug issues in a hour show and somehow expect us to think that legalism will fix it all. Tonights three topics were legalization, medicinal and de-criminalization. But as if that was not enough you though in issues related to addiction and underage usage. Really? All that in one hour. Wow. Superman.
The guy not for weed lie. It almost feel like he was going to lose money. You wonder some time if its not that way.
How DARE you, Evans? A non-toxic alternative to both tobacco and alcohol exists– and you advocate its continued prohibition?
Addictive, carcinogenic tobacco, and hepatotoxic, addictive and inebriating alcohol are both legally available to adults; non-toxic, cancer FIGHTING Cannabis is not. To vouch for that arrangement is criminally insane.
And David– Don't even open your mouth about its medical efficacy to THIS glaucoma patient.
about the concern the second speaker brought up: apply similar rules as have been applied to tobacco with regards to advertising. that will nip it in the bud. tobacco use has been in steady decline, year by year, without exception of a single year, since 1966, ever since health warnings were required on cigarette packages.
