Nelba Marquez Greene: "No one else wants to be sitting in my shoes right now ... I am the mom who has an empty place at her kitchen table"

On the heels of the nation's latest mass shooting tragedy, and roughly nine months since the tragedy at
Sandy Hook Elementary School left 27 people – including 20 children – dead, on Wednesday evening Piers Morgan invited Nelba Marquez Greene to join him for a live, primetime interview.

As debates surrounding gun control and weapons legislation continue to divide America, Marquez Green offered a sobering sentiment designed to place the conversation in shocking perspective:

"I think it might behoove us as a nation to put aside bipartisan politics and petty disagreements and agree that no one else wants to be sitting in my shoes right now," said the grieving mother who lost her six-year-old daughter Ana Grace on December 14th, 2012. "I am the mom who has an empty place at her kitchen table. I am the mom who has a bed her daughter no longer sleeps in. No one wants to be that mom."

Asked by the "Piers Morgan Live" host if she was able to summons any sympathy for the mother of Aaron Alexis, the Navy Yard gunman, Marquez Greene offered a remarkable dose of humanity, in the process speaking to the greater depth of the country's single, most polarizing issue:

"Of course. She's a victim herself. And it's time in America that we start looking at mental illness with compassion, and helping people who need it," she said. "This was a family that needed help, an individual that needed help and didn't get it. And what better can come of this, of this time in America, than if we can get help to people who really need it?"

I think when Piers Morgan says this issue is like Groundhogs Day, he's really expressing Jim Carey's character in 23, except seeing assault weapons everywhere he looks until the rest of reality is crowded out. He parades these victims out under the cover of human interest pieces, but really this is little different than Sarah Brady, Michael Moore's "sideshow act" tactics of exploiting people for their cause

Piers Morgan is a Joke!! if he can't talk about the right Gun, a shot gun used at the Navy Yard used which was recommended by Joe Biden the VP to use mind you, instead of an AR15. Aaron Alexis only bought 1 shot gun as Joe Biden recommended and not 3 guns, which were taken from the Officers and not brought in. Mr. Morgan fails to say I am sorry I was wrong on the gun used and let what is now a lie instead of a correction of a mistake upon finding out become his Fact. How do we the Public ever trust his credibility and integrity let alone his ethics. I believe he is no better then the NRA and he is a Paid Talking head for the Anti Gun legislation.... So Piers How much are you being paid above and beyond your CNN Salary by the Anti Gun Coalition? I was all for background checks before but now I need to rethink maybe the Pro Gun anti Background people are right I need to worry less about the background check and need to get a CCW if all I am fed is Propaganda. I think not only will I focus on other news sources Like BBC and Al Jazeera which at least give fair and more honest coverage

The bottom line here is Piers Morgan is a leftist liberal hell bent on proving that the guns are evil and they need to be taken away from law abiding citizens. The thing you don't realize is that we, the people, don't have the luxury of having armed guards at our side 24/7 and armed guards who guard entrances into places you want to make gun free. The thing you don't get is that people that commit crimes will disobey this sign because they can. Do you expect criminals to follow the law? NO! When the armed guards or the police aren't there to protect us when someone decides to go on a "mass shooting" what do you think happens? Is he gonna hold people hostage? NO! He's gonna end every single person's life if he can. What if there were legal law abiding concealed carriers in that group? Those people could save lives. Those people are already on the scene. The police are 10 minutes away. A lot of people can be killed in 1 minute. You're a complete fool if you think armed guards and gun free zone signs are going to stop these mass shootings. Let me make this absolutely clear. THE AR15 IS NOT THE BAD GUY HERE. THE GUN IS NOT EVIL. THE CRIMINALS WHO USE IT ARE. STOP BLAMING THE GUNS. ALSO GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT. IT WAS A SHOTGUN AND TWO PISTOLS USED IN THE NAVY YARD SHOOTING. Also one more thing. You're hard headed and very rude. When you're interviewing someone else who knows more about guns than you, STOP INTERRUPTING THEM BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT. All you talk about is taking away our 2nd Amendment rights. Get educated, not uneducated.

I don't understand how requiring background checks for the purchase of firearms is taking away 2nd amendment rights

Background checks don't conflict with the 2nd Amendment. In fact, SCOTUS has ruled that, other than keeping a highly regulated handgun inside your home, any other gun possession is a privilege, not a right, and can be taken away.

Piers Morgan needs to be a man and a professional and retract his comments from his show the other night stating that an AR-15 was used in the Navy Yard shooting. I watched him berate several guests as they suggested anything that might resemble the contrary to his biased and incorrect presumption of what sort of weapon was used. Not only is he attempting to persuade Americans that their 2nd Amendment rights are a bad thing, he is also insulting our 1st Amendment by not retracting his comments when he was so blatantly incorrect. If CNN allows this sort of thing to continue with no retraction they should be boycotted by every person, business, etc. in this country that actually has an appreciation for our rights. Hopefully, even democrats and republicans can agree that such a colossal abuse of the 1st Amendment should not go unnoticed.

He's not going retract his statement about the AR15, it was deliberate. The man wants these guns banned, and knows how the public mind works. Six months from now Joe public will still think the gun used in the navy yard shooting was an AR15.

Morgan is a irresponsible and journalistic degenerate...As if the horrific navel yard shooting wasn't bad enough,he is now once again USING the Sandy Hook tragedy to exploit for his gun grabbing agenda. Morgan has no professional ethics or scruples and has a lasting track record of lies and deceit.....Morgan just recently was ranting and foaming about a AR-15 that was "legally bought" and used to kill innocent victims at the DC navel base...We know this not to be true...This was not a honest mistake but instead this was a planned, orchestrated, politicized and even celebrated attack on these types of rifles to promote his liberal gun grabbing agenda. Pundits, and journalist have a ethical responsibility, to report the facts, without bias..far to often we see a political agenda by these reporters interfering with the facts...and out of these Morgan is at the top of the list. One thing has been made crystal clear in the horrific shooting at the Washington DC navel base...is that a shotgun, Biden's weapon of choice, can be just as devastating or even more then a rifle, but a plain ordinary shotgun just doesn't seem to fit the liberal gun grabbing narrative. CNN should immediately fire Morgan ...and he should go back from where he came from, with his BS.

Piers Morgan is a totally unethical idiot. The issue is Mental Illness and America's inability to develop policies and procedures to help those afflicted.

Great comments. The only part Nelba got wrong is that Adam Lanza's mom is no victim - unless we are taking about being a victim of her own ignorance and damaged childhood. Lanza raised mentally unhealthy children. Nobody is born with the kind of emptiness, lack of empathy and anger that Adam Lanza showed. Why is it that when humans see dogs acting vicious they understand that the dog has a bad owner, but when children act out we are so reluctant to look at the parenting? The answer is that there is no greater taboo in this country then to speak out about how mothers raise their children. This taboo must end if we are to take a serious look at solving mental health problems.

Until a mass shooting happens at a gathering of the NRA involving the likes of Wayne LaPierre and Larry Pratt and their gun totting enthusiasts, that they are also all mowed down by a grieving victim from a mass shooting, nothing will ever change and this WILL HAPPEN, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME. People are getting fed up with the NRA and their god given right to block every sensible gun legislation put forth.

Lynn.... please say which one of the gun control proposals would have prevented any of the mass shootings ?? It's a fair question and deserves an answer.

that's why we need to weed out all the idiots that own these weapons. don't be ignorant just because two men used their weapons in a road rage accident. that's two idiots out of hundreds of thousands of responsible law abiding gun owners.
