Bill Maher on FOX News: "Facts never get in the way of their talking points"

On Tuesday evening comedian Bill Maher joined Piers Morgan in studio for a live, face to face interview that proved equal parts entertaining and insightful.

The host of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," the 57-year-old political commentator and comedian offered his perspective on the state of television programs, specifically cable news, of which he noted allows for narrow-minded, and entirely biased thinking:

"When we didn't use to have these kind of places where you could retreat to your ghettoization of thinking, public discourse was the better for it because you had to hear a conflicting idea. Now you don't," he said, before referencing the network on which he was appearing in his criticism. "CNN suffers for that to a degree because it tries to play it down the middle, and people generally want to hear what they already believe in."

A well-known Democrat who supports the legalization of marijuana and same-sex marriage, Maher's real issue is with the hyper-conservative FOX News network, which he suggested isn't based in truth:

"Facts never get in the way of their talking points. And so for people who only listen to FOX News, they can wake up with Matt Drudge and have lunch with Rush Limbaugh and go to bed with Bill O'Reilly," he explained, listing a trio of powerful Republican voices. "That's all they're going to know, is what they hear there. And very often these people do not care what the truth is."

Please check out the story on channel 15. It is about a young man who was at a hospital and a securit officer dump him out in the parking lot. He was found the next day but died.
That is why we need Affordable Health Care for everyone.

Wow Piers. You made the mistake of mentioning Rachel Maddow and Bill Maher put you and CNN in your place. CNN's tries to hard to "stay in the middle". MSNBC takes a stand while checking resources and standing up to fact checks. FOX....LMAO. Sad thing Piers is CNN is drifting closer to FOX than MSNBC. I would suggest you, Cooper and Erin make a point of watching Rachel for a couple of weeks straight.........then maybe you would see what real journalism is about. CNN isn't objective....just wishy washy.

I am a big fan of Bill Maher, but he didn't think this interview through all the way. I agree that there are to many middle men in America. But to say that the average homebuyer does not need a real estate agent to represent their best interests in the biggest financial transaction of their lives, yet Jay Leno does need representation in Hollywood is hypocrisy.

What a combination...the seedy shady tabloid Morgan mutt known for his lies and deceit interviewing a frothing, foaming ugly impish little liberal, who doesn't care about the truth, but only his own twisted liberal agenda..after about 2 minutes I felt I needed a shower to wash off their stink. It's hilarious that Maher would go on Morgan's show and bad mouth Fox news..when Fox nearly has 4 times the viewers then Morgan...Pathetic

4 times the viewers makes something correct? you mean like the bible's followers? Exactly. 😉 Exposing the misinformation Fox news presents is not bad mouthing. It has been show over and over again how subjective they are in their "news" reporting. Watch if you'd like, but realize you are not getting the real story (or anything close to it) The final question I pose to you and your fellow FOXers is.....don't you ever question anything they tell you??? Do some research and you might be surprised

Kr...Everything reported on Fox is researched, and they have commentaries and contributors from both the "right and the left"..when they say "fair and balanced" they are telling the truth. Fox news is an island in a sea of liberal ideology. Maher,Maddow,Morgan..and many others only spew liberal propaganda..Myself and now many others are getting sick and tired of all the liberal lies and deceit from the media and even our own president and his gang.. I suggest that you research what you're talking about..OK there champ ??

Are you kidding me? Fox does all the research that favors them. If you watch FOX, you are as intelligent as a 2nd grader. If you are an Adult, do your own research on the internet and watch news like BBC or Al Jazeera english. Please wake up from your own self inflected delusion.

You're flat out wrong. You believe your own BS.

Bill Maher is 100% right in this. The other thing that Fox and the like do is report facts out of context. Its like saying drinking gasoline kills and then trying to demonize gasoline. While its is a fact that drinking gasoline will kill you. In the entire context of things, gasoline is not meant to be consumed by people.

Go to the PoliticFact website. Research what Sean Hannity says about the costs of insurance going up for the average man. Its almost all false, though he uses some things that are factually true, just taken way out of context.

And how is it that you feel you can win an argument or a point by simplly labeling someone a liberal, or saying "liberal lies?"

I read a lot of the comments. When you have mostly liberals and moderates debating, its often civil, informative, and they try to make actual points. You look at conservative posts and its 99% false talking points and insults. At least try to debate.

      Champ.

You are so right on. Just for fun I decided to watch Fox news programs this past week. I couldn't believe how biased a news program could be. For example, they bring on people who claim their heath costs skyrocketed but the truth is after fact checking these people just didn't take the time to look at all of their options...and Fox news had no interest in checking their story...they just ran with it to keep pushing the negative campaign against the ACA and our President. It's a disgrace.

Those of us who watch the US from the outside shake our heads when we hear the ignorant remarks that come out of your mouths. Do your homework! Don't believe everything you hear! Read some books! And lastly, fact check!

brasstacs, by "spewing liberal propaganda," do you mean reporting facts? This is why no meaningful political conversation these days. So many conservatives, indoctrinated with the lies and stupidity coming from sources like Fox News, the Glen Becks, and Rush Limbaughs of the world are unwilling to entertain any facts that don't fall into their warped view of the world. In turn they label the rest of the media as "liberal." Do you realize how dumb that sounds?

In contrast, you will see liberal sources acknowledge their faults. Maher just recently conceded and discussed the issues with the Obamacare rollout. MSNBC has reported the difficulties as well. You will NEVER see that on a Fox News. A decade later, and Fox News still fails to admit the Bush Administration's failures in leading us into Iraq, when the rest of the sane world has acknowledged these failures as fact.

The fact that you are a sheepish follower of the Fox News contributors doesn't make what Maher said wrong. Fox News is wrong time and again when fact checked, certainly more so than any other station. The fact that they knowingly put out right-wing propaganda disguised as news is pathetic, embarrassing, and a discredit to real journalists.

In fact, if you want to watch an intelligent show, you should try watching Bill Maher who almost always puts one or two conservatives on his panel. There is meaningful debate involving individuals with contrasting political ideologies. In contrast to the idiots you see on Fox News, i.e., the Ann Coulter types, you will see conservatives with brains and who will acknowledge facts...see Michael Steele, even Grover Norquist.

It's actually very amusing watching the liberal voices on Fox. They have that universal look of, "thank God they are paying me this fortune to entertain these buffoons."

Fl – Your the baffoon – probably no work experience in how economics work. Get a real job- something practical & then maybe you might see how these liberal policies are destroying our country. Is there a liberal policy that has ever helped the economy. Feeling good about yourself and your "ideologies" doesn't pay the bills. Get a business finance type job and you might gain some practical foresight instead of being a slave to mainstream gibberish.

        "Fl – Your the baffoon"

First off it's "you're" and "buffoon." You'd little a little more intelligent if you can manage to get through a three-word sentence without two grammatical mistakes.

I am a lawyer by trade. Does that count as "work experience in how economics work?" or a "real job?"...."something practical?"

"Is there a liberal policy that has ever helped the economy."

Hmmmm....other than the New Deal policies that saved our country from the Great Depression, I can't think of any.

Typical liberal arrogance that can only call out typos rather than answer the question with a credible answer. All you could come up with is the New Deal FROM THE 1930s! That policy hurt the American people and only protected the trusts- a failure. Again, ideology bs- being a lawyer is far from practical unless maybe tour a tax lawyer.

What are you smoking, Smokey The New Deal brought about the longest period of economic stability your country has ever had. It lasted until Reagan started dismantling it, with attacking unions and deregulation, which ultimately resulted in the 2008 crash. And remedies for that crash have not been put in place, unlike the 30's crash. I strongly suggest you study economics, and how economies need to work in a democratic society. Not the neo-liberal voodoo economics of the American right wing radicals – economics based on common sense and justice.

        Sandra,
Uh-I think I know enough about economics- not just temporary government intervention stimulus programs. The New Deal did some good things by creating temporary jobs but most of them were eventually not needed, short- term fixes. They did not help the long- term unemployment numbers. WW II was what really got us out of the depression. Besides, my original question was- Name a liberal policy that actually helps the economy- something CURRENT and REAL – and not gvmt stimulus programs. I can't think of any. But I can think of a bunch that kill the economy.

It is pathetic that many will form their political views from a COMIDIAN !!..especially from the likes of a radical foaming liberal like Maher...Because of this it comes as no surprise why this country has become so screwed up,...Fox news has twice the viewers in their prime time slots then MSNBC,HLN,FBN and CNN combined..And that's because they are fair..Fox news has nearly as many liberals on their staff as they have independents and conservatives..can MSNBC or CNN say they have political diverse broadcasting personal ??..No they can't,but Fox news can.

"It is pathetic that many will form their political views from a COMIDIAN !!"

Oh, the irony. To most, there are no better comedians out there than Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh.

There is no connection between the number of Fox News's viewers and the fairness of their broadcast. We can all agree that Fox News is schewed to the right. Going by your logic, most people would accept those "fair" conservative ideologies and Republicans would be winning the majority of seats in Congress and the presidential election. However, that's not happening..because it's not true.

You're in a bubble. If you want to be well-informed, listen to media that espouse views that you do not accept, in addition to the ones that you do.

Broadcast news has way more viewers than Fox News. Which really shouldn't be called news at all.

As far as Fox news having just as many liberals. I have watched Fox news. They bring out weak looking so called liberals and pounce on them. Its all part of their agenda.

It is funny how there are a few "comedians" out there that are delivering political news. What is hilarious is that they don't even have to write the jokes. All the have to do is point out how ridiculous many of the right are when put into full context and faced with facts.

John Stewart is another comedian, but his news satire show is 100% more truthful and informative than anything on Fox news.

Fox news gets a lot of viewers because they don't actually simply report news. They are an entertainment channel. And they know what sets off thier viewers, the cater to that and run it 24/7 truth be damned.

Personally, I try to read the news paper and watch local news. I stay away from the cable news channels.

I really love the political intellect and comedy of Bill Maher and I watch his show on HBO weekly.
I was not happy to hear the comment about Travel Agents and Real Estate Agents.
I am a travel Agent and quite busy booking air, hotels, tours and packages for my clients. There are still people who will pay for a service and who frankly do not want to go online and do it themselves.
In a world that is changing very rapidly I would hope famous people would try to support us working people.
Yes, small Travel Agencies have closed or merged with larger ones and our business has changed. I work for a very proactive Travel company that is changing with the world and we are succeeding.

Bill why dont you try a Travel Agent!

Of course, there is always the notion that you just want to be condescending to others, but your liberal upbringing was so PG that you never learned to argue and fight for what you believe in. Nope, you just expect to win every time without putting forth much effort or fight.

Where is the outrage?! Piers, you called President Obama a liar which is inappropriate. Also, your muddled thinking led you to this incorrect conclusion. President Obama stated that you can keep your own insurance and not change if that is your preference. This is true. However, President Obama did not promise that an insurance company could not drop you from its coverage. This does not make President Obama a liar.
