Bill Maher on Obamacare: "It's going to be a rocky birth but it's not going to fail"

On Tuesday evening Piers Morgan welcomed Bill Maher for a live, primetime interview, asking the comedian and political commentator to share his thoughts on everything from pot and politics to guns and FOX News.

As the topic turned to the recent techncial difficulties surrounding the Healthcare.gov website launch, the host of "Real Time with Bill Maher" noted that issues often plague programs in their infancy:

"First of all, every program of this size was a headache at first. So was Bush's Medicare prescription drug program for the old folks. Remember, 'hey, free Viagra, have a boner on George Bush, remember me at the polls,'" he joked. "Social security, Medicare, all these programs have these kind problems when you start with them."

Despite strong resistance from the Republican Party, Maher insists that Obamacare will ultimately be a success:

"Americans really want coverage. Of course, it's going to be popular, it's about your health, the health of your family. It's a life and death issue and again, it was there, it was created because people were dying and the country was going broke," Maher told the "Piers Morgan Live" host. "It's going to be a rocky birth but it's not going to fail."

This is historic. For the first time a libearal a comedian to boot, has opened the door to Obamacare failing.

Look forward to the day when Obamacare will have had a 'failure to launch' but has not been declared dead by this administration; sign ups are miniscule & a liberal will say 'Obamacare has not failed'

What credentials does Bill Maher have giving him a forum? I think your next interview should be with a street person from the Bronx. Both have opinions, but neither have empirical facts to support their suppositions. If it's not a scientific fact, based upon empirically derived statistics and irrefutable evidence, it's just an opinion. No one opinion is necessarily superior to any other. If one has not investigated a subject and formed their own conclusion, they are no more than a parrot, regurgitating statements overheard.

By that logic, only political scientists would be allowed to speculate on what will happen. People can make educated guesses on what will happen, and at any rate Bill Maher has been following politics and interviewing politicians/policy wonks for decades now.

Chad Allan, this is where the rational thought process goes off the deep end for you. Having the "it is just an opinion" position is what I have coined as the ESPN First Take syndrome. They take a topic, and have 2 conflicting opinions. The problem is, many of the questions they pick are so extremely one sided I start to laugh if I happen to catch it on tv. There does not have to be different opinions, or if there are: YES...YES some opinions are superior to others. You are not being humble or gracious by saying it is just an opinion, you are being naïve.

It has akways worked here in Norway. The only reason it won't work would be because of republicans who wants it to fail.

This is why it works in Norway – as per "The Democratic Underground": "Norway highest wages, best standard of living, best economy, biggest government & tiny CEO salaries". Greed runs rampant and largely unregulated in the US. Obamacare does not remove this problem from healthcare. Everything (including the government, healthcare etc.) is run by corporations. The average CEO in America makes 400 times the compensation of the average employee. This mindset trickles down among the corporate elite (the folks that choose American candidates long before we get to vote for them). In Europe, I think the average CEO compensation is about 20 tomes as much. In America, you go to the doctor and given a diagnosis without ANY idea how much it is going to cost. Everyone milks it and takes their cut – Then the insurance companies come in (an additional unnecessary layer that effectively doubles the cost.) They pay whatever they need to and increase the premiums as needed. In Order To Have Affordable Healthcare, You Need People That Care Enough To Be Affordable. That will never happen in a largely unregulated and politically powerful corporation.

Bill? He's no one special, obviously,. But, since he's spent the last 20 years examining politics to a level of detail that would make most people puke and, as part of his employment criteria, reads several newspapers a day and has become an expert on political discourse and social history, I think Bill's in a better position than most to suggest where this is likely going.

Mr. Allan, Maher's credentials are displayed on his wikipedia page. "He received a B.A. in English and history from Cornell University in 1978". He has also hosted Politically Incorrect and Real Time for the past 20 years so he has got to be well-versed in the issues, even if your own politics do not agree with his. Your "question" and opinionated rant illustrates the problem with the general public. Facts are so easily discovered but you find it easier to spew useless questions of Maher's credibility. This is why we can't have nice things.

So a President who has consistently lied and changed course based on expedience, cannot be impeached
based on his race, should continue negatively changing the Country that was conned into giving him this opportunity.
This is the direct result of Affirmative Action and will ruin a way of life.
But is denied because it projects a negative forecast.

He can not be impeached because he has not committed any "high crime or misdemeanors". Democracy I know its scary when people you don't like out vote you, but its still the law of the country. What you don't know about affirmative action could fill the Grand Canyon.

Up to 19 million or more could lose their health insurance, and or their doctors because of Obama care..and tens of million more could see massive premium increases...But I'm sure they would be comforted if they knew that the frothing liberal Bill Maher said it will be OK.??.. Enough of all the lies and deceit from these liberals.People are already suffering from the Obama care night mare....when will we finally wise up ??

Around the time you realize nightmare is in fact one word. Stop falling for the propaganda and do your own research. The people who have released those numbers are the ones who have the most to gain from Obamacare (also one word albeit a made up one) failing. The people whose plans will be cancelled are the ones whose plans no longer fit the definition of health insurance. Those that pay high premiums and receive essentially no benefits. And you better bet there won't be 19 million of them. Why would an industry getting millions of new customers (some young and healthy to pay for those that are not) cancel policies? No thanks I no longer wish to have your money. You can go away now. Use your head and stop parroting propaganda.

No Vickie only nailed it to uninformed, naive sheep that have 0 economic insight. Instead of correcting simple typos, maybe she should educate herself and then get a job working in business. Then she might foresee what Obamacare will do to our country- but selfish people like her could care less.

I am a nanny and I am going to be forced to buy insurance that I can not afford and I am scared because I am going to be fined. I can't afford a fine. I am scared. Being a nanny means my job can end at anytime. I am divorced and by myself. I don't want to let my kids down by ending up homeless . I am scared! I cry myself to sleep at night because of my fear of this. I don't ask nothing from anyone and I work hard. I am scared. I can't afford it.

I'm sure you don't want to let your kids down by getting sick and leaving them with a boatload of debt from your medical bills. You state has live people who you can call and talk to so that you can completely understand how this affects you and the best way to make it work and be affordable for you. The ACA was not set up to cause people financial stress...it was made to be affordable for all, particularly for people like you.

if your income is low you will get subsidies, cheaper prices according to your income. If you don't qualify for that and even more poor, if you are lucky your state will expand medicaid,,if not then it sucks for you. However, if your state does not expand medicaid, then you will not be required to buy insurance because you woule have qualified for medicaid under the expansion. look up some stuff. I did and that's what i found out....check i out...

You are now uninsured. Because you have a human body at some point you are going to get sick, maybe very sick or you will break a bone, and what will happen. Are you not scared of that? Something is going to kill you because all humans die. You will find yourself in need of medical care and as it stands now you want me to pay for it because when you go to the ER or the hospital, the rest of us are going to pick up the tab. If I am going to pick up the tab, I'd rather pay the cheapest way possible which would be through regular medical attention, not with you coming into the ER in an ambulance. That's what ACA is.

Obama could have horns growing from his head and still there would be those who still would worship him. and those who form their opinions from a radical liberal comedian..I say they deserve exactly what they'll be getting from Obama care..By all indications Obama care is a disaster..I sincerely hope that I and now millions of others are wrong about this..but the news seems to be getting worse by the day...fixing the website will be the easy part..It's what that comes after, that will be the nightmare....People losing their insurance, and doctors...massive rate hikes....Many people will lose their full time jobs or have their hours reduced,...security risks and fraud and more..These are the facts and we were warned..and many will suffer, many are already suffering, and yet the blind sheeple will keep on praising Obama..God help us all.

Connie, In time. Not here. But it's coming. Bill has some dirty laundry. He's a fake. Why do you think he has a hand gun. And how did he qualify for that ? His tax returns need to be seen. Let's see some of his private emails ... texts .. Connie, his words do not match up with his actions.

How many employer/union healthcare plans are in compliance with the new ACA standards ?
Will these be effected ? And will they go up 12 months from now.
Are the govt employee plans in compliance with the new standards ? Does President Obama's personal man plan have maternity coverage ? Why do just a few people have to comply with the new standard.

I wonder if Obama & the NSA bugged Maher's phone and other communications activity. Maybe they saw something and decided NOT to be a part of his HBO show. Hmmmm.
