Harvey Weinstein on his upcoming NRA film: "All the heat should come my way"

In advance of the upcoming 86th Academy Awards, this evening Piers Morgan welcomes legendary studio head and film mogul Harvey Weinstein for a face to face interview that touches upon everything from the NRA to the Catholic Church.

Always outspoken, and known for making movies with a larger social purpose, Weinstein recently spoke with radio icon Howard Stern, revealing plans to produce a forthcoming film that takes on the gun lobby. Referring to the NRA as a "disaster area," Weinsten told Stern that "they're going to wish they weren't alive after I'm done with them."

Joining "Piers Morgan Live" this evening, the 61-year-old Hollywood heavyweight explains why he's so passionate about curbing gun violence and limiting firearms in the United States:

“As much as I want to ignore it, as much as I want to go on with my regular life, I can’t do it this time,” says Weinstein, referencing recurring school shootings and mass tragedies.

The man behind such blockbusters as "Gangs of New York," "Shakespeare in Love," and "Pulp Fiction," Friday's guest lives twenty minutes from Newtown, Conn., and says the massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School was essentially committed right in his backyard. It's this personal connection that has spurred him to make a film which casts legendary actress Meryl Streep as an NRA-challenging Senator. However, already fielding monster criticism for his position, Weinstein is careful to clarify that the anti-gun sentiment is his own, and does not reflect any position of his cast:

"Meryl Streep's an actress. I want to make that clear right away. She's working as someone that's playing a part," he iterates to Morgan. "It's not her belief and all the heat should come my way, and I'm kind of used to the heat anyhow."

Watch the clip for more of Weinstein's commentary on the NRA, and for the full interview, which details the success of his some of his Oscar-nominated films including August: Osage County and Philomena, tune to CNN at 9p.

  1. American Citizen with Rights (for the Moment)

Excuse me, Harvey, but I'd prefer to keep your Statist opinion off my 2nd Amendment Rights that are basically natural rights (and God given if you are into that sort of thing) to defend myself.

These anti-gunners are absolutely insane. They'd leave all sorts of society's weakest at the mercy of thugs and criminals. Especially the poorest living in areas where the cops don't come or could not get there in time.

Anti-gunners are selfish, irrational and INSANE.

I wonder if Harvey has ever heard of a country called Switzerland? You know, the country that the world goes to when we want to issue peace talks to end wars, while at the same time requiring nearly every citizen to own a gun.

Wrong. About 45 out of every 100 people own a gun in Switzerland. So your suggestion that nearly every citizen owns a firearm is greatly exaggerated. But it's higher than all other European countries.

And while it's expected for men to go through gun training, the country has more gun deaths per year, when compared to every other European country. So that part actually goes against your agruement of more guns don't equate to more murders.

While I'm not debating if our country should regulate the 2nd Amendment, don't use false facts to prove your point, please.

does it bother anyone else that this guy is a major Obama contributor? This film will do two thing: make the anti-gun crowd dance for joy and consolidate the supporters of the 2nd Amendment. It is a rich movie maker just wanting to get richer by stirring up the pot. He should be ashamed, but he hasn't the moral fiber to be so.

I am jumping for joy already! Weinstein believes in a double standard. He has a team of armed bodyguards, but wants the rest of us disarmed. I believe these liberal elitists would prefer a police state.

And Weinstein, as a Jew should be acutely aware of what happens when a populace is disarmed, but the ruling government is not.

What is interesting is that in his interview with Howard Stern about this movie he talks about how he wishes the Jews had access to guns during the holocaust... but goes on to say we don't need them in this country....

"it's in your back yard," you say? well, if it is, then you may want to ask yourself what roll have the movies you produced have played a part in that situation. all of your works are gross distortions of reality with the violence and reckless use guns. you want to knock the NRA, but who knocks you as you roll to the bank with the millions of dollars your violent movies make. what a bum!

I love this country but in many areas we are still not acting rationally or like adults. Who needs war weapons in their homes. Not me. I grew up with long guns, on a New England farm, was an avid hunter, and still love venison to this day, but I own NO GUNS. Harvey, I support your position. I have lived in Sweden and Denmark, where getting a license to own a firearm is difficult and expensive. That is a policy that does work, and should be in place here.
I know how to take the NRA down. This is an insidious, arrogant, and dangerous group. I wish you well in this fight.

Let's just say, for the sake of conversation, that you do know how to silence the NRA or that Mr. Weinstein does ... why do you feel the need to do that? This country was founded upon the principal of freedom of speech. When one group is so confident that they know what is "right" for everybody else that they must silence any and all opposition to their beliefs ... well, we've seen that happen numerous times throughout history ... does The Third Reich sound familiar? And, keep in mind that The Second Amendment was not written to protect our right to hunt or shoot targets. It was written so we can protect ourselves from the government and people & groups like you.

Weinstein thinks guns are bad for you but good for Jews. He may not be honest and will invest in gun stocks knowing when ever gun bans or more restrictions are threatened on ownership of weapons sales go thru the roof and stock in them rises. Harveys dream, to make money off of the movie and rise in gun stocks. What a fine human being!

    • Gunn Sports ,

some one needs to point out to this man that # 1. Corporations now have the rights of a Person. voting , et all, and a Person can wish he/she had a better life ,,The NRA is 5,000,000 strong . So all these persons are going to wish they were not alive,,because this homeless unshaven obese man in a fancy suit and tie said those words " We Don't Need Guns in America .. – This to me has turned into a "Fashion Show" ,,All Celebrities in Hollywood ( who,,, guess what ? ,,buy more Cocaine than anyone , anywhere ,,They don't call Cocain – The Rich Mans High for nothing,,mostly because only the rich can afford it. these people should be blamed for every Drug Purchase and its Pain & Sorrow..In as If They Stopped then the Demand would simply vanish ,, and things would work out from there. Gunners wish cocaine did not exist, or heroin , or marijuana et all. And they are 100% right , Its a Yin Yang relationship ,,The NRA wish there were not any drugs ,,none,in as These Drugs endanger OUR CHILDREN ,,100% Undisputed Medical fact. ask any doctor ,, and these people ,, The Elite HollyWood, Los Angeles , Chicago , New York , et all Nation wide call for Gun control while the Gun Fans want "DRUGS CONTROLLED" < – and these Rich celebrities cause more harm to the system than anyone else ,,TIME OUT ,,I have to answer the door.

A curiosity question for Piers Morgan, who would like to disarm every American citizen, England being his model. The question is whether Piers also advocates disarming America's law enforcement officers, as is the case in his English model. It would be wonderful for him to have the Chief of the NYPD or the LAPD as a guest, and ask they what they would think about disarming the cops on the beat in their towns. Or have the head of the FBI on as a guest and ask about having the FBI agents park their guns. Or have a representative of any of the 57 federal agencies that are now authorized by Congress to have armed special agents on the payroll.

    Just curious.
