Matthew McConaughey talks about his father's death; tells Piers Morgan how to lose 43 pounds quickly

He dropped a jaunting 47 pounds to play AIDS patient Ron Woodruff in the film "Dallas Buyers Club" and now Matthew McConaughey is nominated for best actor at this year’s Academy Awards for his role in the film.

The Golden Globe winner for Best Actor in a Drama explains to Piers Morgan how grateful he is for his success:

“I'm very engaged in what's happening, extremely appreciative, understand, you know, what the reasons are that someone would say - be deeming me with a nomination, you know, and what's been going on in my life.”

But there are some moments, the most important ones, may be too powerful or too painful for McConaughey to want to re-live.

McConaughey’s father died in 1992 before he was able to see his youngest son bloom into a movie star he is known as today. The Texas-raised star still feels the loss deeply:

“Anybody who loses a family member, if you lose a father, that's the main crutch in a man's life,” the 44-year-old says, “And it's there for a reason, because you know if it ever comes down to it, you've got your own father to lean up against.”

McConaughey tells Morgan that his father’s death gave him courage and integrity, and that if his father were here to watch the Oscars, “he’d be loving it ... he’d be hamming it up.”

What’s McConaughey's secret to rapid weight loss?

“Go to Mexico and drink the water,” says the actor with a wink.

Watch the clip and listen to the video as the two men share a hearty laugh, then tune to CNN tonight at 9 for the full interview.

I live in Mexico, the water's just fine. Mexicans drink bottled water (and yes they have also Fiji & Evian) or they have water filters installed in their homes. So stop the bad publicity

"you have a tick accent hard to understand." LOL!

I thought McConaughey was going to punch Piers in the mouth when he started off with the bongos story. Piers never fully recovered from that..

Piers I like your show a LOT, and I like you a LOT. I was shocked your show is cancelled. We prefer you to Larry King. Be proud of the work you have done. Thank you for a few good years.
