READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
Coming up this evening at 9, Piers Morgan welcomes Matthew McConaughey for a primetime, face to face interview that comes amidst a bevy of buzz surrounding his Oscar-nominated performance in "Dallas Buyers Club." But despite the fact that the 44-year-old is a front-runner to capture the gold trophy as "Best Actor," his current success is not an indication of anything conclusive:
“I think it's a wonderful moment in my career that is in the middle of its approach. It doesn't feel like a destination," he tells the "Piers Morgan Live" host. "I'm extremely honored, this is the gold standard in the industry I'm fortunate enough to work in. But I - it doesn't feel like it's a resolution."
Known earlier in his career for playing the pretty-boy crush opposite a love struck leading lady, he's deepened his range with recent roles, including his physically and mentally transformative depiction of Ron Woodruff in "Dallas Buyers Club,” a drama based on the true story of an AIDS-stricken rodeo cowboy given 30 days to live.
“A romantic comedy is not about a character's identity as much. No one cares about what the guys job is, or what his past is. They're not obsessed with certain things," he explains, in describing the limited nuance required in some of his previous roles. "They can't be, or they'll sink the romantic comedy. So they float across the top.”
By contrast, some of McConaughey’s most-recent portrayals, including his work in "True Detective" and "The Wolf of Wall Street," have required a much deeper dive into the soul of the men he's depicting:
“These have been really singularly focused, obsessed characters,” said McConaughey. “A lot of them live on the fringes of society, but they're islands unto themselves. They make up their own rules, make up their own laws, they don't placate or pander to society. There’s a freedom that I found in that.”
Watch the clip, and listen to the video, as the two men further describe McConaughey's dramatic choices, then tune to CNN tonight at 9 for the full interview.
