READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
Coming up tonight at 9, "Piers Morgan Live" welcomes one of the most influential and widely-respected talents in today's music industry, as Pharrell Williams joins the program for a primetime interview.
Known for everything from his solo career as both a singer and hip-hop artist, as well as his collaborative efforts with multiple groups and his work as a producer and songwriter, Williams routinely has his hand in a multitude of projects. Piers Morgan, however, is most intrigued by what's on his guest's head.
"Pharrell, I can't talk to you, without starting with the hat. It's a new hat, it's a new shade, is it Vivienne Westwood again," asks the host, referencing the musician's recent affinity toward the oversized accessory, a trend her first unveiled at this year's Grammys.
To Williams, the hats are a nod to early origins of hip-hop music and a culture that helped shape and influence his booming career:
"This was her [Westwood] ode to Malcolm McLaren and the '80s and where, you know, when hip-hop was just sort of, you know, showing its face to the world and the way that it was sort of penetrating all of the demographics," he explains to Morgan. "She was there very early on with Malcom McClaren and, you know, the 'Buffalo Stance' and the 'Buffalo Gals', and, that song was just like huge in all the neighborhoods of, you know, across America and respectively around the world."
As for the notion that Williams will soon become too closely tied to his hats, the artist is quick to remind the host that he didn't create the fad, he's merely paying homage to it:
"Well, you know, and I always say, you know, it's not me. I can't take credit. It's Vivienne Westwood."
