Howard Stern almost retired last year

CNN.com has a story up about tonight's Howard Stern "Piers Morgan Tonight" interview. Here's part:

In an interview to air on tonight's "Piers Morgan Tonight," Stern says he knew he had been wildly successful, and said to himself, "Really, why am I doing this anymore? It makes me crazy. I hate getting up early in the morning, and I don't particularly like doing the show."

But, Stern tells Morgan, he is "driven by a neurotic compulsion" to do his show.

The full interview, including Stern's take on Jay Leno, his father and running for office, airs 9pmET/PT on CNN.

Everyday Heroes: A report from Tucson

"Piers Morgan Tonight" Editorial Producer Andrea Lewis reports from Tucson:

In the wake of tragedy ordinary people do extraordinary things. They run towards bullets to tackle gunmen. They jump in front of bullets to save people they have never met. They stop the bleeding and hold each other's hands while the world spins out of control around them. I was privileged enough to meet many of the everyday heroes of last Saturday's tragic shooting in Arizona this week.

First there was Daniel Hernandez, who had come to work for the Giffords’ campaign only five days ago. FULL POST

New CNN 2012 Poll: Looking Up For Obama, Huckabee; Down For Palin

CNN has released the results of a new poll about the 2012 election. The poll was taken December 17-19. Things are looking up for President Barack Obama:

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday, 78 percent of Democrats questioned in the poll say they want to see Obama at the top of their party's ticket in 2012, with only 19 percent saying they would prefer someone else as the Democratic presidential nominee. The 19 percent figure is the lowest figure since March, when the question was first asked.

But for Sarah Palin, just 49% of GOP respondents support her as their nominee, down 18% from two years ago. As for the rest of the field, it's looking good for Mike Huckabee: FULL POST

Murrow Didn't Do Fart Jokes: Why Jon Stewart Is Not America's Next Great Journalist, And That's Okay

Note: This article, written by Steve Krakauer, was originally published on the CNN Political Ticker.

What is Jon Stewart? A lot was made of the "Daily Show" host after his D.C. rally, which got major national attention and saw hundreds of thousands of fans in attendance. Recently Stewart took up the cause of the 9/11 first responders, called out the Senators holding up the health care bill and held a powerful panel of first responders to talk about the issue. Late last week, it passed.

Today the New York Times (as well as NPR) profiled Stewart and his successful 9/11 first responder efforts, with the NYT saying it had "echoes of Murrow" – referring to legendary news anchor Edward R. Murrow. Stewart is an extremely influential member of the media. But he is not like Murrow – or even a journalist. FULL POST

Even While Obama's On Vacation...

Just in, from the White House:

President Obama and President Medvedev spoke by phone this morning to discuss the new START Treaty and their continued close cooperation on a range of critical issues. President Medvedev congratulated President Obama on the Senate’s approval of the new START Treaty, and the two leaders agreed that this was an historic event for both countries and for U.S.-Russia relations. President Obama said that the two leaders had a very productive year working together on new START, as well as Afghanistan, Iran sanctions, the 123 Agreement, issues related to the WTO, and the situation in Kyrgyzstan. President Obama also underscored the importance of the United States and Russia working together to support a peaceful referendum in Sudan and a resolution to the impasse in Cote D’Ivoire that respects the results of the recent democratic election. The two leaders wished each other a Merry Christmas, and pledged to continue their close partnership in the New Year.
