Piers In The Press: Gervais' disappearance, flirting with Condi, "unstoppable" self-promotion...

If you hadn't heard just yet, "Piers Morgan Tonight" premieres tonight on CNN at 9pmET/PT. And there's...some press out there about it.

Here's a roundup:

New York Times:

Mr. Morgan is an unstoppable self-promoter, the likes of which CNN has not seen before. On his office bulletin board hangs a headline from The New York Post: “Piers makes enemy of Madonna.” Before dozens of television critics this month, he said CNN needs to make noise in a cable news “jungle,” and added of his own show, “I want you guys to be writing about the show regularly, good, bad and ugly.”

New York Post:

The meeting was barely underway, and already talk had turned from scheduling to flirting.

“There was proper flirtation — I was flirting with Condoleezza Rice and Oprah on Week One,” Piers Morgan declared, as a producer ran down the A-list roster of interviews planned for the launch week of his new CNN show, “Piers Morgan Tonight,” which debuts tonight in Larry King’s old time slot.

Also from the Post: what Howard Stern said about Jay Leno.

New York Observer:

Ricky Gervais may still be trending from last night's flame ball monologue, but the true Golden Globes media winner is Piers Morgan.

Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais got noticeably less screentime after his incendiary opening. Some said that's standard for awards show hosts, but fellow Brit and Larry King successor Morgan jumped on the conspiracy train, tweeting, "What the hell happened?" and "Gervais not seen for an hour now," starting the hashtag "#whatthehellhappened."

More about the luck of the Gervais booking.

Los Angeles Times:

Does he worry that continuing to judge "America's Got Talent" while hosting this new talk show will hurt his credibility? "No, I think it's funny," he says, lightening up a little. "One day I'll be judging a piano-playing pig, the next I'll be interviewing Nelson Mandela."

One day, when that piano-playing pig can fly, he'll be interviewing Madonna.

A great CNN profile:

After Morgan was canned - "sacked" as they say in Britain - he did not languish out of sight for long. His cheeky, dishy memoir was a best-seller. He started writing for the British edition of GQ magazine, where he interviewed celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke - and, as it turned out, the woman who last year became his wife.

&bull And if you'd like to see your Piers in the Press in multimedia form, check out NPR's audio report on the new show, and his appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America" today.

Piers Morgan was a lousy choice to host CNN show, He is mean spirited (has brought many children to tears on America has talent). In the dictionary, his picture is above the word Arrogant.....CNN will replace him in a year.

What a stupid dude to come on theView to criticize Madonna for adapting to a London accent after she's been living there for years. That is so immature and illogical of mr Piers. Why don't you, Pires, try to talk American if you some unexplainable reason is to occupy time on CNN at night. By my prediction (and hopes) you won't last long, "bloke".

    Hi Piers !
Welcome to American criticism after the show ! I hope you give Ricky a lot of is own medicine on Wednesday. He has got to be the worst comedian in history! He does not seem to be familiar with 'sarcasm is the cheapest form of wit". His performance at the Globe's was 'bloody awful" to use a British term. I wonder how he will like having the tables turned on him. Good luck with that, I will be watching !

Say, CNN, is some clown named Piers, something-or-other doing something on your network tonight?
And say, what happened to that lovable Larry King? We sure miss him?

Dear Piers, congratulations on the show! I can't wait to see the Oprah interview tomorrow (I'm taping it as it airs at 3am here in Switzerland). One thing though, please don't hold on to that ghastly format of interviewing people for 1 minute and then going to commercial breaks. My theory is that the ratings at CNN went down because there are far too many commercial breaks (learn from Al Jazeera, by the way – they are totally in the know!) Your interviews in the UK were always so captivating and I sincerely hope that we can enjoy the interviews without 200 commercial breaks per show. All the very best from Zurich, Stefan

    Saturday Evening Post:

We haven't seen such an embarrassing amount of self-promotion there at the tired CNN network since Chimp Bush
left office. My goodness, some tongues must be brown and some asses red. If you know what we mean.

Over 300 mil in this country and CNN couldn't find one (1) American to fill Larry Kings spot? I'm not going to watch until you find one.

I have come to rely on CNN for NEWS, not sensationalism or Drama. I'm disappointed in Mr. Morgan's desire to shock. I want journalism, not tabloid nonsense.

For once we have someone that does not put me to sleep on CNN at Primetime. I think this will be great.

I do not think so. I am tired of your preference for non-USA performers in the media. You tell me that in a country of 300+ million Amnerican people you cannot find an born American interviewer as good as this Brit. As the fellows said there are other things to do. Your sponsors are not going to get any of their money. By the way you do know what you report–unemployment level at 9,7%. Try a born American who has lived here all his life.

Very often it's rare to find in which “perfect balance” in between user friendliness and also looks. I have to admit in which you've accomplished an admirable job using this. Additionally, your site a lot very speedy for me personally on Firefox. Superb Blog!
