Need To Know News: Obama's call for unity; two GOP responses

Each day, we here at "Piers Morgan Tonight" will put together the news you need to know – from what happened last night to what will happen today.

For January 26, 2011, President Obama's State of the Union, followed by two separate GOP responses.

• President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union last night while the legislative audience mingled between Democrats and Republicans. From CNN: "Sounding themes of optimism and pragmatism in his 61-minute speech, Obama called for increasing investments in key areas such as education and clean energy while freezing some government spending for five years in an attempt to address simultaneous needs for economic growth and fiscal balance."

• Following the SOTU, Rep. Paul Ryan delivered the GOP response, which gave way to another GOP response – this time from the tea party and Rep. Michele Bachmann: "Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann, chair of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress, delivered a Tea Party-style, red-meat conservative rebuttal sharply criticizing President Barack Obama's State of the Union Tuesday."

• Now, President Obama is headed to Wisconsin. Leslie Bentz reports: "The President is expected to tour several businesses including an energy company on Wednesday during his visit. "

• Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' condition has been upgraded from serious to good, and she is transferring again. From Elizabeth Cohen: "The announcement late Tuesday night came after her husband said she had watched an hour of television from her hospital bed. Her husband, Mark Kelly, called the development "'exciting,' " said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a friend of Giffords."

• Protests in Cairo have ramped up. From CNN: "A day after an unparalleled display of public rage at Egypt's government and full-throated cries for the ouster of its longtime president, the country's security forces made their own potent presence felt on the angry streets."

• And the snow has returned for the East Coast of the U.S. From CNN: "Hartford, Connecticut and the Boston area could get as much as 10 inches of snow by Wednesday night, the weather service reported. Areas in Pennsylvania are expected to get up to eight inches of snow. Parts of New York could get up to seven inches of snow."

You have hit the jackpot CNN with Piers Morgan! He is smart, funny, prepared and respectful of his guests. I liked his comments on the State Of The Union speech. He was a great addition to the panel. He actually had opinions, and he expresses himself clearly. He is a much needed breath of fresh air to the network!

I think President Obama's 2nd 'State of the Union' speech describe his core political ideology, while masterfully disarming his critics:

watching Brooke and her news update, i saw a picture of airforce one.why does the President not use a smaler air craft, when flying around in the us.
i watched his him delivering the State of the Union, pointing out the pore shape the country is in and the national dept ect. ect. ect. Why does he not set an example and use a more fuel efficient aircraft, to save money and show the american poeple he means business.

Piers Morgan is an "infotainment" celebrity, not a politico. Please stick to the people who are actually knowledgeable, and have credentials. CNN should be embarrassed for injecting Morgan into the SOTU commentary. They are trying to force this guy on their viewership in any manner they can in the hopes that broader exposure will bring more viewers to his show. This reminds me of when the Today Show tried to make Giada de Laurentis an interviewer on subjects other than food.....yeah, that worked well.
