Need To Know News: Mayor Emanuel?; Libya and New Zealand updates

Each day, we here at "Piers Morgan Tonight" will put together the news you need to know – from what happened last night to what will happen today.

For February 22, 2011, election day in Chicago, and updates from Libya and New Zealand.

• Will we see Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Voters in Chicago will decide today. Kevin Bohn reports: "Now he enters Tuesday's voting as the clear front-runner and possibly within reach of avoiding a runoff. A candidate needs to win 50 percent of the vote to avoid an April runoff."

• Very little definitive information is coming out of Libya, but here's an update: "Residents in the Libyan capital of Tripoli reported a food shortage, gunfire and intimidation by security forces on Tuesday as the country's longtime ruler asserted his power and gave no indication of succumbing to week-long anti-government protests."

• An earthquake in New Zealand has claimed the lives of dozens: "One of New Zealand's largest cities lay in ruins Tuesday night after a powerful earthquake killed at least 65 people, toppled buildings and left scores trapped beneath chunks of concrete."

• In Wisconsin, protests continue and the state government is still not in session: "As the standoff continues in Madison over a budget bill that would increase the costs of benefits to public employees and curb their collective bargaining rights, Republican Gov. Scott Walker blamed unions for squandering state coffers and impeding fiscal reform."

• In NBA trade news, Carmelo Anthony is heading to one of the most storied franchises in all of sports – he was traded to the New York Knicks last night.

When is the Rod Stewart interview really going to be aired? It has been changed and moved so many times and then it was not on last night 2/21/11. When?

When is CNN going to give us a break from this middle east crisis? Why can't we have just one hour out of our day to be entertained. We have hours and hours of middle eastern news, Yes, now we know that Piers can do an incredible job interviewing national and international issues, so now let's get back to Hollywood week before it's over. I was so happy to finally see the interview with Colin Firth. I can't even count the times it was pre-empted.

Mr. Morgan, I feel you are the only straight forward asking journalist, and therefore can you please ask top Politian’s whenever you have a chance a simple question. What the heck do some stupid words from the UN do to save life? How come no concrete resolution can be agreed? Stop the talking and act now, or otherwise this is just a re-confirmation that the UN is a blabla club of wane be politicians. Also I don’t understand why the Chinese are not leading army to free Libya! They can get the juicy oil deals after Lybia is out of this mess as a good will, and China can start showing the world that they do care of world affairs and their new world leader must take some initiative. Clearly the US has no longer any interest and no credibility …just as Molly describes above that she would rather watch Hollywood crap than trying to understand, and be part of the world’s problems.

When is the Rod Stewart interview? It seems amazing to me that you can find time for the Kardashians, Hefner, etc., but Rod Stewart isn't important enough to find a time for or you can't even reschedule and let his fans know the time.......Wow! Not much reason to tune in to CNN – at least Larry was dependable......

Isn't there any way Libya's military can be contacted and promised that if they fire on their own people they will be liable for war crimes and this includes starting a civil war? If the military can refuse to fire on their own people in Egypt and lready Libyan diplomats are refusing to support Ghadhaffi then deal with the military and not Ghaddafi. He can easily be surrounded and removed. And by his own people. Sanctions take too long now. Suggest UN troops surround the Libyan borders to demonstrate assistance to the Libyan military if they co-opt to support the citizens and not the despot.
