More than just winning: Why Charlie Sheen is news, like it or not
In the tiger blood-fueled media blitz of the last week, which has seen Charlie Sheen show up everywhere from TMZ to Howard Stern, from sports radio to network news, in only one appearance did he directly admit to violence against a woman (video above). That interview re-airs tonight – Sheen's wide-ranging, one-hour sitdown with Piers Morgan (his first live TV interview from Monday night).
As Sheen has captured the interest of the media and the Twittersphere, several outlets have covered Sheen in a different way – suggesting the coverage is misguided, hurtful or in some cases, shouldn't be occurring at all. Let's address these concerns.
Writing in today’s New York Times, Anna Holmes questions why there has been so little focus on the question of Sheen’s alleged abuse of women. "Observers still seem more entertained than outraged, tuning in to see him appear on every talk show on the planet and coming up with creative Internet memes based on his most colorful statements. And while his self-abuses are endlessly discussed, his abuse of women is barely broached," she writes.
Holmes' argument is constructed using the "Piers Morgan Tonight" Sheen interview on Monday as the key plot point. Her piece, “The Disposable Woman”, takes Morgan to task for waiting until after the third commercial break to ask “have you ever hit a woman?” and then contends there was minimal follow-up. She goes on to blame the culture of reality television for perpetuating a negative image of women overall, and characterizes Morgan as “an enabler” of Sheen’s bad behavior.
Holmes mentions other interviews in passing, but fails to point out that Morgan’s interview with Sheen is the only one in which he admits striking a woman. NBC spent enough time with Sheen for two taped and one live interview this week, without a mention of Sheen’s alleged violent past. ABC’s taped interview by Andrea Canning included three questions, but moved on briskly after Sheen answered “I did not, come on, that’s stupid.” TMZ, Howard Stern, Dan Patrick – all outlets that didn't touch on the issue, and it is disingenuous to ignore them. Only during Morgan's interview did Sheen admit to, and detail, one past incident in which he "had her arms, and we both went to the ground." Holmes does not point out that Morgan asked about the alleged incidents of violence in Aspen and at the Plaza Hotel, nor does she remind readers that Morgan asks Sheen in the interview if this kind of behavior led to any response from the advertising community.
Holmes does a very good job of detailing the long list of alleged abuses against women by Sheen. However, Holmes fails to put Sheen’s current troubles in the proper context, by seemingly ignoring his troubled and lengthy relationship with illegal drugs. It is the drug question that has literally fueled this current Sheen news cycle.
Drugs, and Sheen’s history with them, make up a large part of Morgan’s hour-long interview. The entire discussion on CNN, and around the media, has drawn criticism for being 'exploitive' or 'dangerous' or ignorant of health concerns. But through all this, America is watching. Piers Morgan’s interview with Sheen ranked as the young show’s highest rated episode and ABC’s special edition of 20/20 featuring Andrea Canning’s interview drew more than 9 million viewers.
The idea that Charlie Sheen is somehow not news – someone that should be ignored instead of covered – is the sort of quaint, misguided "journalism" that exists in theory and not practice. If some people nod along to these anti-Sheen-coverage arguments while shielding their eyes when he starts describing "winning" in his next appearance, they will inevitably peek through their fingers and feed their curiosity.
The truth is, Charlie Sheen is interesting. He's relevant because he is the star of a top-rated prime time comedy. And because of this, he is news, like it or not. He may make us uncomfortable, or we may feel he's unstable, but when news outlets begin to make journalistic decisions based on diagnoses they are incapable of making, everyone suffers. Should we not interview Moammer Gadhafi because he too may be insane, or is a tyrannical leader who is accused of murdering his own people? What about the President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejed? As "Piers Morgan Tonight" Executive Producer told Yahoo this week, "If we ruled out people who are mentally unstable or somewhat psychologically challenged, there would be a lot fewer people on the air and in newspapers."
On a domestic level, there are all sorts of people who would make fascinating interview subjects and yet who, morally, are more complicated: Bernie Madoff, Michael Vick, Mel Gibson. Or how about Jared Lee Loughner, the young man who murdered many in his failed assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords?
But that is an extreme case. Charlie Sheen is morally complex – a controversial character who the world has become nearly obsessed with trying to figure out. You don't gain 1.5 million Twitter followers in 48 hours because people don't want to hear what you have to say. If you feel Charlie Sheen shouldn't be covered or interviewed, or if the coverage is unfair or corrupt, there's a very easy way to voice your opinion – with your television remote.

Well, truth be told, if somebody would take the time to post a comment about the coverage on tv of Charlie Sheen, then doesn't that tend to suggest they've noticed him more than just in passing – most likely because they've watched him be interviewed. And most likely they've watched him be interviewed on CNN if they chose this blog or PIers' interview to complain on/about?
In which case, couldn't an argument just as easily be waged that it's the viewers who are enabling Charlie Sheen and the networks are merely satisfying our demands for more? Couldn't an argument just as easily be waged that it's people like Anna Holmes who turned Piers' Charlie Sheen into the most watched episode in the show's history in the younger age bracket (assuming she's in the bracket). Because I'm in that bracket, and I wonder those things about myself – by wanting to see more, am I enabling a troubled star (in that I'm one of millions).
Wow it took some time to find somebody with some sence .Well done .To everybody else .get over it ,yourselfs and as sheen stated ,simoly focus all this energy on youre own family's .

I think it's complicated because people, including stars, are so much more than just their troubles – Charlie Sheen's captivated peoples' attentions too because he's extremely charismatic, funny, smart. To what extent should or do we as viewers (or commentators like Holmes), or interviewers, or network heads actually influence an individual who's complex like that?
I think that's a much more interesting question.

PS About the history of violence ... I'll give Holmes that. It's a lot worse then Charlie has made it seem via his interviews – ABC outlined it in the 20/20 piece and I didn't realize he had plead guilty to 2 incidents, one was Brooke and another happened before he married Denise. Then there was the accidentally shooting of Kelly Preston. Then Denise Richards left him when she was pregnant, and she made allegations against him. Then there was the incident at the Plaza. So that's basically every partner he's had in his life. That's a pattern there.
Still, it's hard to know what's 'right' or 'best' when somebody just doesn't want people intruding into his public matters even though his public matters are splashed all over the tabloids ...
PPS Notice how I saved discussion of the violence until 3/4 through – that totally wasn't intentional ... I think it's just natural when you're trying to be fair and impartial, to want to put things into context first before you get to the controversial stuff? For me anyways ... jmo ...
The only thing worse than Charlie Sheen's behavior is Morgan's strange idea that Charlie Sheen should be able to live his life the way he wants to. Last I checked, cocaine was illegal and common sense would tell you that you don't bite the hand that feeds you. Morgan's additonal comment about the hypocricy of Hollywood and how rock stars are given liberties and almost encouraged to live a lifestyle that includes drug use only further made me realize what a poor replacement he is for this job. Is he saying that drug use is your own business?
Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan should pair up. They apparently think they are above the law and can do whatever they want. I feel sorry for his children and family. He is a self centered ,useless person. He could do so much good with his fame, money and (now lost) influence, but chooses to show how weak and addicted he is. Yet he continues to blame other people for his problems.

For Charlie Sheen,to be in the forefront of the news is a good indication that our country is flowing down the toilet! Who cares about Sheen. What about our economy, the fat oil companies using any excuse to jack up the oil prices, our poor infrastructure that has not been worked on since it was established during the 1930s, affordable healthcare, social security being on the chopping block to pay of the national debts... so long social security and all those needing it for retirement. Americans continue to wag our fingers at other countries as we sit on our pompous thrones, spewing rhetoric about how wonderful the USA is doing. Its a joke.... and the last laugh is on the American people.

I was disappointed in Piers interviewing skills or does he owe a debt to Charlie? Wake up Piers & Charlie (and Charles Barkley who did think he was a role model either) but not for the viewers who's spending dollars the sponsors hope to capture you would be reduced to your high school acting stage. Piers was far too "enabling" in his interview. It seemed he was afraid to corner Charlie when he deserved to be cornered. enough said
I disagree. I think the way Piers handled/interviewed Charlie was with the most professionalism, kindness and integrity that we've seen to date from anyone interviewing him in the recent media blitz. Charlie is (obviously) not rational, and to 'corner him' to get the sound-byte would be the easy way to get a sensational interview. Instead, it looked like Piers chose to treat him with respect by doing exactly the opposite and NOT push him into a corner, but gave Charlie a chance to speak as rationally as he is able to. I think it shows restraint, professionalism and respect, and is the sign of a good human being, not just an interviewer out to get ratings and views. Well done Piers.
I used to work as a waiter years ago and Charlie Sheen used to sit in my section many times. He was a very kind and generous person and i believe he still is. I think this is a great interview and Piers Morgan is doing a fantastic job. Charlie is very driven and he may have a desire for substances but i think that goes along with his talent and drive. I think baclofen might help him to sleep better and melatonin. And it may also lessen his desire for dopamine increasing drugs and alcohol.
I just watched the show and I heard Wal-Mart named as a sponsor of “Two and a Half Men” an they may have wanted to pullout. Of all the people to fraternize with CBS over Charlie Sheen behavior. Why doesn’t someone ask Wal-Mart how it is that they allow people to come to work drunk, and then send them home behind the whell of a pickup truck. Or how they allowed this same person to work “drunk” falling down, hitting his head and cracking his skull. Then come back to work only to fall backwards finish off the crack all the way around his skull. Next day and days following the accident, allowing him back to work, delusional until he quit just so they would be off the hook. Drinking OK! But you can’t do any drugs, even a hit off a joint off duty. This is the hipocrocy of corperate America, it’s Ok to drink and drive but just say no to drugs. Why not ask Wal-Mart, why so many people all over America are waiting for approval of operations caused at Wal-Mart. I know, I’m one waiting In pain, now 10 months. It’s Ok to be on prescription drugs that screw with the other parts of your body. Their fighting it tooth and nail, rejecting reports that show I should have had this operation months ago.

How is it that Charlie Sheens private life is any of our business? Would we be acting the way we are if all of this was happening to an average, everyday man? I know people who go through the same things. Do they belong on the news? How would you handle this situation if it were you? Celebraties are regular people who happen to make alot of money...like a Senator, Congressman or President.

Charlie Sheen, and anyone else in this country that uses any illegal drug, including marijuana, is a criminal. It requires speciifc criminal intent to be convicted of a crime in the U.S. There is also moral responsibility. Anyone using drugs in this country is morally a serial child abuser, a serial killer, and a serial senior citizen abuser. Period. No one has a right to "party" at the expense of other innocents. Who is Charlie Sheen? Everywhone oves to ask but nobody can fill is shoes. He is who he is and who he is is who he chooses to be. Nobody sees him different. He his two and a half man, and with that I meen he is the roll he plays, he can relate to the roll he plays, he can feel and understand the roll he plays. There is nothing wrong with an actor reflecting to his roll. The people see him as a bad boy of hollywood but I see him as a stepping stone of comedy entertainment, a person who can interact with love for the screen and the life that comes with it. Charlie Sheen is exactly the person that everywhone wants him to be! But still, everywhone reacts negatively to the person that he can relate to himself. Who is charlie sheen? He is a star plain simple! All ohters simply hide who they really are! Where are the other stars of hollywood? He is the completion of the show! Without him there is no show, so I say cut him a break, he needs one!

Do you actually believe that Charlie Sheen didn't sound crazy during your interview, or were you pandering to him to gain his trust? I am a child of the 60's, so no prude, but I, and every other sane person out there, can tell when someone is in deep trouble, and Charlie Sheen is in deep trouble. While Piers Morgan was so busy enabling his inexplicable guest, Charlie Sheen, he completely overlooked the real reason Sheen's show, Two 1/2 Men, was cancelled. I hate to bring up that nasty word which is on everyone's lips these days, anti-semitism, but the real reason the show was cancelled was that Sheen made antisemitic remarks about his producer on two occasions. Just ask the powers-that-be. It was also referred to just this morning in a NYT theater review. It's been mentioned over and over again. No wonder Mel Gibson has been stroking Charlie Sheen, according to Sheen himself. But I wonder: Is Piers Morgan deaf or is it something else?

Dear Mr. Morgan: Your interviews are refreshing since you apparently do your homework ahead of the show and actually know something about the people you interview. We are watching now and had not been a Larry King fan. And your Charlie Sheen interview was fascinating. However, your view that what he does in his personal life should not matter as far as CBS shows how the media's moral values have declined. He may deny abusing women but he did wreck a hotel room and admits breaking the law as to the crack. So if he does bodily harm to Brooke etal that's okay as long as he makes it to work on time??? That is what you seem to be advocating. Just thought I would pass that along – I'll continue to watch you but am no longer watching Sheen – he doesn't want people like me watching anymore according to what he said this week.

Normally I am not down on Hollywood, but I think the charie sheen mania is an example of show business eating it's young. We should not be using Charlie for entertainment and ratings as he is sadly confused and dangerously addicted. I am afraid his children will be growing up with out their dad. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
I've too have about had my fill of the Charlie mania ... it was funny at first, but after watching him in action, I do get the sense that he's far more troubled and out of control than he's willing to admit.
And if so, then it's just a matter of time before there's another serious 'incident', one that'll sober everybody up to the dark side of the hard partying. And if Charlie Sheen gets to be seen more for his dark side than his funny side, then maybe the pressure'll be on him to try and really change his ways – for his career's sake if not for his health or for his kids.
I figure it's okay for all of us to be going along for the ride, if only because he's not going to listen to any of us anyways – he's a grown man with a lot of money, and a lot of smarts and charm, and he's not going to listen to just anybody. There's be reports that Sean Penn convinced him to go to Haiti – I get the feeling he's trying to show Charlie that he's found great fulfillment in using his fame to help others in need, like maybe if Charlie felt like he had a greater sense of purpose it would give his life more meaning? If so, that's a really nice friend he's got in Sean Penn. And maybe his Dad might be able to get through to him.
It'd be one thing if Charlie Sheen was really was just choosing to use drugs recreationally, but it seems like everybody thinks he's an addict going down the same path as MJ, except for him. Didn't Denise say in an interview that she's been reading their girls a book called 'My Daddy's an Addict'? That's really not good 🙁

I agree George Winter. Piers is not a good replacement for Larry the King. His voice, his silly laughter, his values (letting Sheen get off so lightly and almost sanctioning his behaviour) has put me right off his show. Sheen is a dead loss and I am sure he is still drugging. If not now, he will as soon as the heat is off him. Just shows that you can have all the right connections, money, good looks etc, but you can still self destruct.
I hear ya Charlie! It can be hard to explain to certain people. Some people will have a hard time stepping out of the Old Paradigm under which they operate and transcend.
Sure Charlie Sheen and his media blitz have gotten him on seemingly every channel all the time, puts the State of the Union to shame, but ain't it about time he cranked it up a notch. Spurious argument. "He only admitted to hitting a woman once, therefore he deserves a pass from his interviewers." What if he admitted to hitting a woman twice? Then could he get a few more follow up questions? What's the cut-off.
If the argument here is that he is news-worthy, then let's treat him as news and really fully investigate this apparent meltdown using our full journalistic capacity. If he's not serious news and just entertainment (so who cares if he hits women?) why a full-throated defense of the time the media is spending on him? If certain segment of the media is going to obsess on celebrity meltdowns, they are going to have to take their lumps from those who think this is a waste of air space.

...Ladies and Gentlemen you heard it here on CNN: Charlie Sheen may be insane like Gadhafi or could have killed his first girlfriend from shooting her in 1990 like a tyrannical leader.
Just sending this to the logical conclusion on why CNN, a major news-source, keeps thrusting Charlie Sheen in front of us as though this unstable man is part of the political and world discourse. As though a guy who cannot function without a decent script, director and editor (as reported on his childlike amateur internet hour) and the show Two and a Half Men is as world bending as Mercenaries killing children in Libya. Here is a news tip CNN: The children dying in Libya has never heard of Two and a Half Men. Gabby Giffords just spoke and we can't find that story anywhere. Gas prices at the pump is over four dollars and Charlie Sheen is one of the minority of Americans who can still afford it.
Move on. Move on from this trainwreck of Hollywood "Who cares anymore" on an cocaine addicted wife beating star mentally unstable actor named Carlos Estevez for ratings. Because THAT is why you are trying to convince us it is important.

To be honest, I hated the Piers Morgan- Charlie Sheen interview. I deplore Sheen for taking everything Morgan said to him as a joke when it is all very serious stuff. He has been abusive, his wives will back that up, he only admitted to one incident which he blamed on the woman, he feels the show should take him back after his disgusting behaviour as an actor on a Family show. He admits to spending a lot of his ridiculous salary on his decadent ways and I never got the feeling that he is repentant or that he does take responsibility for his actions. There is always a price to pay for fame and financial gains like he has gained and he has to recognise his status as a role model. He is a brilliant actor and it is so sad to see him waste his life on garbage like he does. Morgan in a way, made him out to be a bit of a hero, he chickened out after one mention of the heavy stuff like the abuse and his childhood and Morgan DRIVES ME MAD WHEN HE INTERRUPTS HIS GUESTS JUST AS THEY ARE SAYING SOMETHING WORTHWHILE! This is from a sense of insecurity I think and he has to stop it. His shows are not a success in my eyes, I much prefer him as a judge on AGT!
I wonder if Piers Morgan ever reads these comments! His interrupting of his guests has got worse not better so I guess he never does. Didn't Sheen look terrible? From such a hottie to a skeletal sort of shrunken eyed mess. So sad. He should now redeem himself by speaking to school kids etc about the horrors of drugs, but I sense that he does not really consider it horrible taking heavy drugs and drinking.
As a person that has bipolar or manic depression I feel for Charlie Sheen it can be hell. Delusions, grandiosity, cannot slow down body & mind. I hope he can get the help he needs.
Charlie Sheen is obviously suffering from mental illness, probably bipolar and the media is eating it up. It is all very sad to exploit someone with mental illness. I predict in a few months when he is either hospitalized or dead the media will reexamine how they should have been more concerned rather then egg him on while manic. Then move on to someone else.

I think Charlie might be a bit full of himself and that's what's wrong with Hollywood today. My grandfather (James L. Brown re: Rin-Tin-Tin) was so humble and grateful to be part of hollywood, but would never act this way. Charlie looks actually like he's got a bit or Parkinson's or severe ADHD. Stop fidgeting!
Let me tell though, recovery can not be achieved within 28 -90 day rehab programs (like Dr. Drew's.) What these people need (like Charlie, lindsay, etc.) is the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission's 1 year in-house recovery program. God centered, spirit-filled, and grace based. Top 3 percent in the country for success of clients that graduate.

Probably the biggest interview in history! you guys waaaaaaay over hyped this weak brit. He is a celebrity kisser. It is hilarious. Like, where is the hard questions. total cop out from what was promised.
Charlie is telling everyone just what they want to hear. Answering all the questions with all the "right" answers. Do you feel like a fool Pierce? You should! Charlie is in total denial of his actions and needs to be held accountable. People need to stop putting "people" like Charlie on pedestals and giving them the publicity they seek. The world seems to think that people like him are cool...well they're not. Get over it Charlie and yourself. I will no longer watch any episodes of Three & A Half Men. What if Piers/CNN were to offer Charlie Sheen some live time to do his ustream thing – I'll bet they'd get record ratings again. Everybody says they're sick of it, and they don't feel like watching, and that the network should cover more serious news ... but yet we'd all be watching. More of us would watch that, then would watch live coverage of Libya, or an interview with a serious actor.
Everytime there's a celebrity like Anna Nicole, or Lindsay, or MJ, or Charlie, we all tune in to watch. If none of us watched, the networks and the tabloids would all stop covering and talking about them.
I find it disturbing that time is put into Charlie Sheen. I personally do not watch Two and One Half men and would not watch this show because of what he represents.

Very shallow journalism from Mr. Piers. He took the Charlie Sheen thing and is running with it. He is right now trying to get more dirt on him by trying to coerce the ladied of "the talk" to dish it out. Enough already, find another topic to focus on. What ever Charlie may have done, don't try to be his buddy to juice him for info then backstab him with additional negative commentary. Very poor integrity. He has cheapend the Larry King genre. Do others have appathy for this Piers guy or is it just me that finds him pompus with a splash of weasel, stird not shaken.
Piiers, I'm afraid you blew it. I watched the Charlie Sheen interview, I've watched your comments and the comment of your guests regarding all of this. You need to have someone on who is experienced dealing with addicts, not celebrity addicts but everyday in-the-gutter addicts. Charlie Sheen exhibited all of the classic behavior of denial, of others not understanding, of others labelling him by inappropriate standards. The guy IS an addict. And while I hope he can finally get it and stay clean permanently as well as acknowledge what has happened and how others have been affected by his actions and words. Sadly, it is easy to predict he will fall again into addiction and continue to blame others. PLEASE: have a true addict expert on. Thanks.

Charlie's interview and webcast was the rambling of a drug induced addict who is clearly embarrassing himself and his family!
He was fired from his show (am shocked that he is considered so highly of a star and paid as one) because he became toxic to himself and everyone on the set! You can not produce a show with someone like that.

No, Charlie Sheen is not important news, but he has gone public in an attempt to show he has no problems to no avail. I love your show, but I am very disappointed on how much you are going on about Charlie Sheen. I feel all we are doing is encouraging him to continue. This man has some very serious issues. One of which is drug addiction. We are only promoting this by so much publicity. He needs some help, he is seriously ill. We also need to think about his immediate family and his children.
