Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu: Japan situation has "caused me to reconsider" nuclear power

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sat down with Piers Morgan for an exclusive interview earlier today in Israel. Topics included the Palestinian conflict, Libya, Egypt and more. It also touched on Japan. "It certainly caused me to reconsider the projects of building civil nuclear power plants," Netanyahu said. "I have to tell you I was a lot more enthusiastic about it than I am now."

"Are you saying you might actually stop any kind of nuclear program in Israel," asked Morgan. "I don't think we're going to pursue civil nuclear energy in the coming years," responded Netanyahu. Watch the full, exclusive interview tonight at 9pmET/PT.

No big shock there. I don't think Israel has built a nuclear plant since Dimona in the 1970's. They're too vulnerable. But yeah, anyway – cue crazy people.

The world's biggest danger is Israel's stock of nuclear bombs and delivery systems. Iran is just a side show promoted by Israel to shift attention.

The world's biggest danger? Really? Do you suppose that if you were a country surrounded by over 100 million people who want you dead that you might come to the conclusion that you needed a nuclear deterrent? And in any case, how are Israel's nuclear weapons any more dangerous than any other country's? And shift attention away from what? Do you think that Israel is planning to nuke somebody anytime soon, assuming they weren't provoked into it?

Exactly, they are sitting on a large stockpile of atomic bombs.. not sure what's the bigger danger heh.

@ Ben. You are a dummy for sure. Israel could have nuked all the terrorist states that have been plaguing their peaceful existence since its foundation. But they haven't. Not sure the islamic nutcases would have been so amenable, as they care nothing for life, theirs or especially anyone elses. However, I can see a future where Mecca is turned to dust and glass. If all these revolutions end up as islamic theocracies I see a huge war happening and Israel will be at the centre, and islam will have to be eradicated once and forall.

I love to watch Piers, I think he's fantastic and interesting, and he has interesting people he interviews, but it is REALLY annoying that he cuts off the people he is interviewing... I thought it was getting better, but he is still doing it in this interview – especially we want to hear what the prime minister has to say....

I think Piers is an antisemite. He was not interviewing Netanyahu without bias. I thought Netanyahu was brilliant and at one point when Piers kept pushing him, he said honestly, we don't know who's in power yet, how can we negotiate. Piers lost lots and lots of points with me last night. I willl never see him in the same light again.

Eh... you do realize that space is full of radiation, right? Not saying I'm in favor of just tossing nuclear waste in orbit around ourplanet, but we could throw it on a trajectory for the sun if we really wanted to. Then you have to think of it possibly being cost prohibitive to launch a rocket just to 'take out the trash' as it were every now and again to get rid of the waste.

      Anyway... just saying.

US detonated over 90 nuclear bombs for testing purposes. If we can find places in US to nuke, we can find places where nuclear power plants can be built safely – even if they explode.

I'm pretty sure that nuclear power causes a lot less damage to the planet with it's noxious and toxic gases and chemicals. It also causes more cancer, and gives off more radioactive material when running than nuclear power.

And Jay's comment is probably the most ignorant thing I've seen in awhile. If you send nuclear fuel into space, especially into the sun, it's not going to do anything. Space is already filled with more radiation than anything man can produce.

      March 17, 2011 at 2:19 pm | Report abuse | Reply
    • Peter Edwards

Nuclear power is not nearly as dangerous as fossil fuels, which is what would replace it if we gave up nuclear. Even though fossil fuels don't rely on radioactivity, their waste is far more dangerous than anything that a nuclear reactor can produce. Nuclear waste, while dangerous, can be successfully buried and forgotten about with no problem, and will eventually decay into more harmless material. However, the waste that doesn't escape into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels is highly toxic, cannot be safely stored for extended periods of time, and will linger as long as the earth exists.

More people die per year due to processes and biproducts of fossil fuel production and consumption than the total number of people who have ever died due to nuclear accidents

Yet, another uninformed kid living in the basement of their parent making these comments.
Nuclear industry has THE safest record in all energy industry. For Christ sakes, the reactor held up against a magnitude 9.0 quake and subsequently also survived a 5 – 10 meter high tsunami (the actual hight is still in debate). It was the "generator" that was misplaced at the same height as the tsunami to "cool" the reactor down due to its decay heat. The reactor shut itself down automatically immediately after the quake and yet proved again that they can be safely controlled even during such a devastating quake. There's a lesson to be learned here, to not place generators at the same height as the tsunami. Saying that reactors are unsafe? Are you retarded? That's exactly the same as saying, one airplane crashes so there's no safe airplanes, we shouldn't be building airplanes. During time of panic and devastation, we shouldn't be making any policy when people are obviously not able to make rational decisions. In this case of Israel, is the prime-minister just that inexperienced such that he makes these "comments" at a premature stage of analysis of the damage?

You need a course in risk analysis. Yes, earthquakes are rare, yes Sunamis are rare, yes Nuclear mishaps are rare. But they do happen, right? Can not be denied. This is the 2nd time it has happened (that we know of, and not counting 3 mile island,) and it won't be the last. With probability of 1, it will happen again. And if you wait long enough, it will happen very close to where you or your children or grand children live. With probability of 1 (and not less). Think about it.

        Absolutely correct.

While that is true, it is unlikely. Planes crash.. it can’t be denied, right? And if you wait long enough one will crash on top of you or one of your children. Think about it.

You have no clue. Israel is the only nation that took blacks out of Africa to liberate them instead of to enslave them. Read about Operation Moses and Operation Solomon. No other nation (whilte, black, brown, yellow, or green) has done so much for the Africans as Israel has done. Before you curse Israel, read the history, and then read your Bible.

As to Jesus being black, this is a moot point. Jews reject Jesus not because he may have been a white Jew or a black Jew, but because Jesus is not a Messiah, and neither is he G-d. Period. End of story. There is nothing racist about it. Whether Jesus was (or was not) white or black, or whether Jesus even existed or is a complete myth is totally irrelevent to Jews rejecting Jesus.

I assumed he was using the blanket term of black to reference those of Arab descent, as we often are subjected to. However, if he was referring to black Africans, while I disagree with his insanity, I wouldn't toot Israel's horn too loudly. They were the most prominent supporter of Apartheid South Africa, no?

God, this nuclear hysteria is ridiculous. we know these things can happen. still doesn't shake a stick at the decades worth of continuous yet more subtle damage of coal power plants. We need more nuclear plants. If Obama said we were building 50 starting tomorrow that would be great news to me. Id be happy to live in the same town as one. Don't bother posting your world wind farm fantasies in response, not interested in pretending that could possibly solve our energy problems...

Nick, while I agree on your views of Israel, I have to say that you are wrong. Geothermal power alone could power the world indefinitely. Combined with solar, tidal, wind, wave, and other clean technologies, we could completely eliminate any need for fossil or nuclear based power. Please don't believe the lies of the powerful energy corporations that want to keep us ignorant.

Notice how the conversation drifts into hatred, religion, and verbal abuse? What's that about? If we don't start working together to solve issues, the issues take over and create further delays in resolving them, which then fester and grow even more powerful. Get real. Get smart. Move together, heal together or perish together.

My question is for the very handsome Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu. 🙂 Mr. Netanyahu, my name is MaryJo Mazzatta and I have deep concerns about your Isreali-Palestine conflict and borders. The time has come to help lift the Palestine State up with their own Sovereignty. I know you have a strong and extreme (elderly) religious (as well as family and friends) group to contend with but 'WE' (the Globe and Universe) need YOU right now. We need to to change and lead us into a NEW tomorrow. You are the key... We really need you...'I' need you. 🙁

Israel has given up land for peace many times and the Palestinians have short memories of these deals, usually measured in hours. Why should Israel continue to give up anything if they just get murdered in their homes in cold blood, like what just happened...perhaps you should direct your prayers toward Iran and their bloodthirsty proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah.

Thats why most countries have them. Thats why ussr did not shoot one at america. I mean if us didn't have one, us won't b here. So disarming is stupid and u think north korea and china will disarm... Nooooo, never! The idea of energy nuclear has the most ecomic benefit and greenest type of energy! I mean yes there is the deposit but not enough to worry about for years.

Should be a great interview tonight but it conflicts with NCAA tourney-life is tough- I am interested in whether Netanayu will continue with offer that had Olmert and Abbas close to peace- sounds to me like Hamas is ready to make serious concessions in the name of Palestinian unity-this would be a great time for real leadershio.

Ben- you are half right but that make a big diff- Israel's nuclear stockpile is only a threat to Islamic exctremism- not all Moslems or the world. In fact it is a great equalizer. Netanayu is looking to make the kind of choice in looking at this that visionary's do. tis is notr unnoticed.

So what has been deterred by Israel having nukes? You can easily find many quotes by leading Israelis where they state they will use nukes at will if needed. They will not check with the usa first, they have even said they will ATTACK the usa if we stand in their way. Look it up, and whoever thinks Israel has tried to live in a peaceful existence, please you are very uneducated. You might like to know the first terror bombs to go off in Israel were in 1948 used by Israelis to blow up some Brits. All the info is out there, you just have to think for yourself and DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON TV OR INTERNET!

We've been fighting over energy for 100 years. With all the alternatives available, and the fact that what once was considered by many to not be efficient, now is, we're still fighting. Do all of you proponents to nuclear and oil and coal energy not see it? If they could sell the air we breath they would. It's all about keeping the energy needs in the market place instead of liberating us to choose our energy sources and give everyone out there an opportunity to take advantage of the profits of producing energy. Monopolies are suppose to be against the law in the united states. But not when it comes to energy. We allow companies like Enron to take over. Then look what happens.

All we have to do is make a mandate that all future homes must have an alternative be installed during construction. Solar, wind mill if property size permits, or the future "Bloom Box" from Bloom Energy. That would significantly slow down our increased consumption of oil, coal, and nuclear energy needs.

China engineered a giant wind mill. It's in the shape of an upside down cone. One powers 50,000 homes. I cost $50 million us dollars to build. For about $50 Billion dollars we could power our own nation. They are said to last for over 50 years without repair. They float on magnets. They are about 20 stories high or something like that. I was researching them some time last year.

There are options. There are inexpensive options. Our politics are just aligned to generate profits for those that own our country. That's the energy industry, insurance and banking industry, pharmacy industry, and war industry. Gee, guess who is supported wholly by these industries? The Grand Old Party, (Republicans). That's why they speak of nothing alternative except that which can forever be sold to the public and price gouged on the public. Nothing that is for free. There is no reason that the public shouldn't be able to invest tax dollars into an energy system to where going forward, energy is free, other than maintaining, kind of like our National Highway system. It's free, except for the maintaining of the system. Take out the profits. Stop sending $600 Billion dollars over seas to foreign countries. That's $600 billion every damned year which could be spent here to spur our own economy. Think America. Why did you vote out the Democrats. 12 years of control and look what they did, nothing but damage. You give barely two years to try and clean up the mess and blame it on the Democrats. God, "WAKE THESE PEOPLE UP"!.

It showed him to be way out of his league in this interview with a bright and scholarly man. I wanted him to shut up and do some active listening before jumping in with comments designed to further his own agenda. Piers most hone his interviewing skills and learn from the likes of Barbara Walters,Larry King and Anderson Cooper instead of falling in love with the sound of his own voice.

At the very, very least, let the guy finish a sentence without interrupting in your pompous tone. The guy is a world leader, a war veteran, and a very educated man. Show him some respect. Further, your anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian leanings and the flagrance with which you flaunt them are absolutely disgusting. If you can't make as much sense as your interviewee, you just cut them off every eight seconds? Is that the strategy? I very much enjoyed hearing Mr. Netanyahu speak. Hi Piers, I wrote a song and one of the lyrics is, "we say there is left and right, but the truth is there's only right and wrong". In your interview with Mr. Natanyahu you appear very left which unfortunately is not right, objectivity is hard to come by, for first one needs to be deprogrammed and then reprogrammed with God sanctioned truth, not popular opinion. Even though the bandwagon is hugh it is not holding mercy and truth and the wheels aren't justice.

Piers is either completely naive or purposely unfair when he said to Netanyahu "You can be a hero or a villain". As if it is up to him to make peace. Israel has wanted peace for a long time and has achieved it with Egypt and Jordan. There is no incitement to war in Israel but even five yearolds in the Palestinian areas are imbibed with hatred toward Israel. It would take both parties to show they really want peace.

How much ruder and arrogant can an interviewer be...not much! He not only cut off the Prime Minister on numerous occassions (likes his own voice and often makes interviews about him), but asked the Prime Minister 2 or 3 questions at a time. Furthermore, he had the arrogance to TELL the Prime Minister how to make peace once the Prime Minister realized who he was dealing with and turned the tables on Piers (what a fool Piers looked like...the if). appear to lack an in depth understanding of people and also lack basic interview skills for that matter. Go back to judging amateur talent and leave the professional journalism to those who are more deserving. Who hired this clown anyway?
