Clips From Last Night: Lorri Davis on finding the killers; Damien Echols on falling in love

Last night Piers Morgan sat down with two of the "West Memphis 3": Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols and Echols' wife Lorri Davis. They talked about their 18-year struggle to gain freedom, what prison was like, and how they are doing now. Now that the men are free they are working to bring justice to the three little boys that died. "This is the most important thing," Davis said, "to bring new evidence to the case." She goes on to say, "we want to discover who did this."

Davis and Echols met and married while Echols was still in jail. He described what it was like to find her:

"I think I fell in love with Lorri pretty much from the first letter," he says. "There was something completely and absolutely different about her."

What a poor piece of journalism. I don't know if they are guilty or not. what I do know is that 12 Arkansas jurors did not unanomously convict them because of the music they listened to as Piers Morgan tried to lead us to believe. Where is the other side of the story, CNN?

    September 30, 2011 at 12:43 pm | Report abuse | Reply

They were not convicted solely on the kind of music they listened to. The hillbilly jury also considered the black shirts they wore, the books they read, and an outcry from the toothless, inbred town about 'satanic' rituals as evidence. This case has been totally ridiculous from start to finish! I pray that you are never wrongly accused and face a jury similar to that of Damien and Jason. It you do, best of luck!

      September 30, 2011 at 3:56 pm | Report abuse | Reply

Yes, they were presented those factors you mentioned and much more evidence (perhaps not enough for a conviction that would stick). I just think it is poor journalism to present a totally one-sided story which would naturally lead to an opinion like yours of the evidence in the case and the jurors involved. There is not a hill anywhere in the vicinity of West Memphis.

        September 30, 2011 at 4:24 pm | Report abuse |

I went out and talked to some West Memphians. The ones with teeth, like you, believe this was the work of just an ordinary run-of-the mill killer. But the toothless ones just would not be convinced that hog-tying and butchering three little boys was not some sort of ritual killing. There is hope that they will some day become educated and sophisticated and will put such fairy tales aside.

not true. there was so much to convict them all. have a look at, blink on crime – look for yourself! and dont listen to the crap the media has feed everyone about the black shirt etc – that has nothing to do with the case. try the 500 pages of Damien's mental history – he was a violent, mental patient. he DID NOT JUST RUN AWAY FROM HOME! lies! jessie confessed after he was convicted too. Damien knew about the urine in the stomachs and lied on the stand many times.there is sooo much more. Look at the case hey people will believe what they want to believe.

They were railroaded by The Keystone Cops who lost evidence, refused to look at evidence, coerced simple folk to lie to fit their backwoods theories of satanic panic! That Judge Burnett should be crucified. That sorry state of Arkansas should pay all of them millions for the torture they endured. The biggest crime is that someone got away with murdering those 3 babies!

Yes, as it now turns out, someone did get away with it, namely those three.

MR. Thomas, I am an Arkansan, SO let me start by saying that YES these young men were wrongfully convicted for their dress and their music by a community that believed the hype.If you will read any of the evidence or the lack there of you will see. I have a son, and he was very messy. This court said that 3 boys were murdered and every speck of blood was cleaned up by 3 teenage boys. That right there is just silly. The same judge that had retired from this case always gets to sit on it whenever any new evidence comes up..Why do you think that happens? They do not just walk into your cell on death row and say "If you say you did it you get to go home"..Doesnt that sound a little strange to you?

AMEN, Anna! If any of those podunk, backwoods officials thought they had a snowball's chance in hell of winning a conviction in a fair trial the WM3 would still be rotting in prision. The prosecution knew that any judge with a shred of intergrity would laugh their bogus evidence out of court. With regards to Judge Burnett, he is a jack booted thug who belongs in prision.

        October 2, 2011 at 8:51 am | Report abuse |

Anna, your post reads like you don't even believe there were three little boys murdered, Well there were, and it was a ritualistic killing, and somebody did it. Cultism was rare in Arkansas, and a cult member confessed and implicated the others. If guilt were based on preponderence of the evidence in criminal cases, these murderers would still be in jail. Unfortunately (for this case) proof beyond a reasonable doubt is required so the murders went free.

        October 2, 2011 at 3:51 pm | Report abuse |
      • Sarah

Mr. Thomas, since when is it unfortunate that proof beyond a reasonable doubt be required to put someone to death or send them to prision for life? With regards to WM3 supporters not taking notice of the brutual murders of children, that is hugely unfair. I am sure that Anna cares very deeply about the death of these sweet boys. However, just sending anyone to prision is not justice. Most of us simply do not buy into the idea of blood thirsty packs of teenagers roaming the street looking for innocent children to sacrifice to Satan. That is just beyond ridiculous. This crime seems to have been personal and commited by someone close to the children. Perhaps, dare I say, someone whose DNA was found in a ligature at the crime scene.

Fran, it is clear that you and I do not see eye to eye, but don't assume that I am not well versed on the case. I have followed it for fifteen odd years and have visited EVERY website, even the ones that do nothing but spew lies and promote violence against innocent outcasts. I will not even bother to tell you how I have drawn my conclusions, but I will challenge your statement that Jason Baldwin ever confessed. That honorable and decent man would never have casually made comments to a drug addled jailhouse snitch. It is so ridiculous that I cannot even comprehend how anyone could believe it. I hope that it gives you comfort believing that the state ALWAYS gets it right, but rest assured that they do not. Especially one was crooked and narrow minded as Arkansas.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartwarming interview. I apologize ahead of time for the comments that will come on this thread from people who will call you names and try to discredit you because you do not believe what they believe. They did the same thing to Mr. King. and just about every other journalist who systematically refuses to believe in their tired rhetoric. Thank you again for the interview it was much appreciated. Once they get past trying to debate facts they always end up just calling people names.

I think it was a mistake for Lorri to go on the show. She is clearly not comfortable talking to the media, and she barely said anything of substance. If you want people to believe your husband is innocent, FIGHT for it!

Admittedly, she did not have a whole lot to say. She does seem to have a quiet strength to her and that does not make for good TV. However, noone can accuse that woman of not fighting for her husband. She seemed to have led a charmed life prior to meeting Damien and she gave up EVERYTHING to help fight for his freedom. I admire her sacrifices and think that Damien is very lucky to have ended up with her. Best of luck to Damien and Jason and know that there are rational human beings who believe in you.

lori, spelled with one i, has spent over a decade fighting like a warrior for her husband. you have no idea of what went on behind the scenes and what the day to day battles were. (yes, i do) she's not a camera hog, she is a strong woman who gave everything she had for justice. if you look into this case with any depth, it quickly becomes obvious that it is a case of mishandled courtroom railroading. having an opinion about the case is fine. making silly assumptions about the wife and whether or not she fought hard enough is not.

i agree but i have to admit i like that shes there. its interesting...just like she was there on cbs'48 hour mystery and at the orginal press conference. its interesting to see how a man who was locked up for 20 yrs acts around his wife. here, he looks distant and doesnt even look at her but thats nothing new. he is always kinda cool to her but and heres the kicker...he's that way with everyone. he can barely make eye contact with anyone and doesnt smile much in photos. but i think shes there to answer questions about the organization and what it took to get them out. legal stuff. but yeah on larry king she was like a deer in the head lights but that was bc king asked about their marriage and she describes herself as "reclusive" and a hermit so i guess she doesnt like the attention. i dont know. its interesting

Great show, made me feel good you obviously support the innocent people, Mr. Morgan. They have been through hell and it's a shame there are still disturbed individuals out there trying to blackmail you and the West Mempshis Three. It's great they're free now and I'm positive, sonner or later (the sooner the better) the real killer(s) will be found and brought to justice. My deepest respect to Lorri Davis, people like her make our planet a much better place.

What a load of bull pucky. Did Mr. Morgan do any homework prior to this interview? How about a couple of questions about Jessie's confessions after his conviction? Confessions that were to his OWN lawyer and are remarkably consistent with his first confession – particularly remarkable for someone who is supposedly retarded.

Better still, why not challenge Damien on his own inconsistencies during the interview? First he says he "spent the last 10 years in absolute solitary confinement," the he says when he went to a comedy show shortly after being released he was relieved he no longer had to "worry about anybody behind me stabbing me or hitting me in the back of the head?"

Total garbage and this phoney Brit "journalis" bought it hook, line and sinker.

Good job, good interview. How sad to think the damage you have placed on these young men. I am appalled and embarrassed to think we live in a country that this happens. The attorneys, judges, jury and law enforcement that took this to this level ought to be hung. What the hell were these people thinking?

Damien does not exhibit the psychological profile of someone in solitary confinement for 10 yrs. He is articulate confident and show no signs of someone who has been wrongfully accused and imprisoned for 20 yrs. Did he go to Yale while in solitary and have weekends at the country club. This guy is a psychopath and smart enough to commit murder and get away with it. If he is innocent, then he is the strongest person to have ever walked the planet. Someone brought up Hannibal Lecter during the interview. We saw him being interviewed that night.

Some of you feel like you didn't get the other side of the story in this interview. Let me save you the suspense of hearing the other side. The truth is there isn't much of an other side. Besides the confessions made by Misskelly, which were clearly coerced, there is no legitimate evidence connecting these three men to the murders. NONE. They were convicted because of pressure placed on the court by the community and prosecutors who lacked integrity. Feel free to give your opinion on this page but at least back it up with the reasons you feel these men are guilty. I challenge you to find legitimate evidence to back up your claims. A dislike of Damien's personality is not enough evidence to label him a killer or a bad person.

Why dont they have an alibi? Why does The supremely intelligent Damien just keep getting caught in lies. Why are supporters continualy calling Jesse retarded when this is proven false. Why wont any journalist have a five minute conversation with Jesse and see for themselves that he does not "have the mind of a five year old child" No one ever claimed it was a satanic ritual. Certainly not the prosecutors. Check Lorris bank account if you think she gave up everything.

See how Jason rocks in his chair – did this when on trial too. Damien always puts his hands over his mouth – and says um before he speaks. Jason doesnt seem too upset about spending all that time in jail does he. Playing the game that's for sure. I dont think Jessie is very good at playing the game that's why he doesnt do interviews..... just confessions.

Thank you Piers for doing this interview and bringing up the whole issue of death road in US, especially after the Troy Davis executionover a week ago....I believe nobody should be punished for murder by murder!!!!!!, especially when there is no solid evidence!!! Thank you so much for caring about this issue and sorry for what you hear from people who don't know better. It's very refreshing to hear questions which you directly asked.... for some reason most of the Americans like to avoid this even if they are not in favor of this law, just in sake of not to expose themselves into such a controversial issue , which I believe they fear it might somehow hurt them. I was born and raised under totality system, but I do not understand, why today, and in US ...."the country of free"... people do not value the human rights!?? Anyway, thanks again, I believe you are doing great job! Keep going! 🙂

It is surely not generally unfortunate for society that "beyond a reasonable doubt" is the required proof, but it is unfortunate for the families in this case that these killers are loose because of that criteria. Do you have some idea what person "close to the boys" might have done this ritual killing?

Mr. Thomas, you are not listening. I do not believe that 'ritual killings' are a real thing. I believe that someone who knew these children and had some rage against them, harmed them. You just seem like someone who buys any ridiculous theory that this backward state comes up with. Again, blood thirsty teens in black shirts sacrificing children to Satan doesn't seem a bit far fetched to you?

You should have asked Lori if she had written to other child murderers or if she plans to find a new penpal. Damien lied during the interview about many, many things and you should have confronted him like a good journalist would have done. I was disappointed and what happened to Jessie, he should have been the star of your show.

    October 4, 2011 at 1:28 am | Report abuse | Reply

Sarah, now that I have reread some of the case history, especially Jesses several confessions, some of which were clearly NOT coerced, I agree these were not ritual killings. Instead, they were the work of teens so evil that a lot of people can't comprehend it. After mutilating animals and threating to kill humans the next progression up the ladder of evil for Damien had to be to kill humans.

These men are innocent of this horrific crime!!! There was no evidence that they were even remotely close to the crime scene at the time of the murders. Furthermore they had to plead the alford plea!! if not they would have had to go through a lengthy trial that could've taken years to resolve. That would not have been fair for any of them especially poor Damien after all he went through in there. He's definitely scarred for life. Now he can be with his wife and everyone can go on with their lives, they can still clear there names, the real culprit needs to pay for ending three wonderful lives and destroying three others!!!
