Herman Cain attorney Lin Wood: Media is "participating in the deterioration of the political process"

Herman Cain attorney Lin Wood is a guest on "Piers Morgan Tonight" this evening, in an exclusive interview in the wake of the latest accusation aimed at his client. "What I find naive is the failure on the part of members of the media to be asking the tough questions of the accuser, someone who has, obviously a troubled past," Wood tells Piers Morgan. "Why don't you look at yourself, Piers, and the members of your media?"

Says Wood: "You are participating in the deterioration of the political process."

Painfully sad that Piers Morgan is the only thing on TV during this timeslot (via CNN Interational in a non-english country). Always interrupting DAILY. I think this guy likes to hear himself talk more than his guests. His tabloid history has no place on CNN even remotely trying to perform as a journalist (which he isn't)

Nah. Not surprising. I have had other comments not show up on the Piers Morgan threads. Seems that CNN is trying to justify his existence. His career history speaks for itself.

Mr. Wood was absolutely right. Piers Morgan uselessly continues to propagate left-wing slurs based on totally unfounded accusations. When will Mr. Morgan invite Mr. Cain's accusers who totally lack credibility and ask them some tough questions, in particular if those accusers can offer any proof. Mr. Morgan says he tried to get to the truth. The truth is that CNN and the "Piers Morgan Tonight" programme are left-wing outposts trying to turn the political process into a tabloid gutter journalism, where Mr. Morgan spent most of his career in the UK.

Mr Wood is missing a major point – Herman Cain has put himself in the limelight by asking us to vote for him as President. We have the right to know these questions about his character. For once, I will stand up for the media and say that they have to ask the tough questions.

Ellin, The tough questions is NOT how much did he paid other people that Mr. Cains have given to people in the past. The tough questions are the real issues like how to deal with the forecloser problems, jobs, debt problem, economy etc. Thats what is important and the tough questions that Americans are looking to hear. But the media is not focus on those issues. Oh yea! my neighbor just lost their home because my friend husband lost his job. THATS important problem.

Mario, and you really think a morally corrupt Politician like Herman Cain is the solution to your neighbors problems? 999 means millionaires/billionaires continue to get off the hook. When was the last time you saw one of them driving a Chevy or Ford? Cain destroyed Godfathers Pizza, (any in your neighborhood?), and now you want to let him demolish America too?

You are right Ellin. As well as the accuser needs to be completely interrogated by the media when trying to bring down a candidate for President. Not just the accusers that threaten the medias choice for President. If someone is seriously and honestly trying to decide on Herman Cain the media needs to do what they went to school to do and live up to those standards. Sadly 3/4 of the media doesn't live up to the standards and as a result they propagate and enable the crap on people they do not agree with.

Cain's lawyer apparently never heard Herman Cain when he had his own talk show on WSB in Atlanta, or subbed for Neil Bortz. He treated any Democrat and many other public officials the same way, with accusations and opinions, just like talk show host do. He did nothing but judge, every night he was on the air. Well now, he's being judged. Don't claim it's not fair now. Deal with it!

You made a fool of yourself tonight interviewing the attorney. You lost the high ground, and it's a shame that your producers allowed you to continue with the salacious grilling of Cain's attorney. He took the high ground and you lowered yourself in a way that can hurt your brand and CNN. Shame on your approach. It can't be all about ratings when our country's values are at stake. What else is he hiding? who else is he helping? Can he help me coz i sure would use some extra money. Mr. Woods is mocking our intelligence by imputing improper motive on the media in this affair.

This is one of the worse interviews I have ever seen. Cain's lawyer has gained my respect for providing a much needed insight into what has become an embarrassing debate for the presidential campaign and prime time TV. The attention given to this issue and types of questions being asked demonstrate the lack of substance by media channels who cannot focus on the real issues, real topics of national and global concerns in politics today. I wish not to watch Piers Morgan again. Can he not get any interesting guests, stories that he must focus on these issues only???

Piers Morgan is rude and arrogant. Why did he not accept Mr. Wood's suggestion that he call all of the republican candidates to a public forum and have them alll discuss their extramarital affairs. Would Newt Gingrich survive his lead in the polls after it is once again told how he cheated on is last wife with is current wife! And how would he explain what he did to his first wife? Exactlyl how many affairs did he have during his three marriages, while running for president twice and holding a seat in the US Congress. .Oh, by the way.,,After you ask him about his extramarital affairs include his finances problems, and work as a lobbyist. Ask him if he is no longer in debt and how he paid his way out. It is disappointing and a shame that CNN is becoming more and more biased in who and what they choose to cover as "news". I am not a republican, but a proud African Ameircan woman who is not a Cain fan, but wants to see equitable treatment of all candidates. i am disgusted that Piers Morgan spent this much time on Cain, but has never brutally questioned Newt Gingrich. CNN announcers say Newt has joined the Catholic Church and changed his life. Does a leaopar change his spots? And what about CNN's unnnfair coverage on Sarah Palin. Her oldest daughter was pregnant while her mother was running for Vice President. Bristol was a made out to be a victim. Her youngest walked around pushing and being rude to reporters when her mother was on her bus tour. No one dared highlight her rude and inappropriate behavior. Of greater important was the failure of CNN and other meida outlets to hold Sarah Palin liable when Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot after Palin placed her in crosshairs. Palin's crosshairs comments were incendiary, but she was never viliefied or held accountable for her don't retreate "reload" mentality. Piers and others overlooked the fact that several people around and near Gabby when she got shot were killed and are now dead. Why was Sarah never interviewed and held accountable? Cain may or may not have had an extra-marital affar, but if he did no one died because of it. And yet, Piers is insistence to know every detail became verbally abusive to his lawyer.. Were his questions about his wife's feelings; how much money was spent or given in fifteen years asked for any reason other than to disgrace Mr and Mrs Cain and for that matter, Ms White.Such bias. Much stupidity on the part of Morgan and those who allowed this show to be aired. Morgan apparently dislikes Cain almost as much as he hates PRESIDENT OBAMA. Whenever he gets a chance he never hesitates to ask if his president has worsened race relations while neglecting to mention that one man is not and cannot be responsible for solving a nation that has been divided by racial tensions since slave ships arrived at U S ports from the Middle Passage..
g for VP her unwed pregnant daughter was portrayed as a poor victim. As a result of the media coverage of her, Bristol Palin became rich. If an African American candidate said put an elected figure in cross hairs and that elected official was then shot, CNN would cover every angle and demand the person who made the statement be held accountable. When Gabby Gifford who wa one of the people Palin had in the croos hairs was shot, the media whispered what Palin had done and never held her accountable for her actions.

Unfairly places too much of the bruedn on low income families while excluding high net worth individuals who's primary income is either dividends, or, as (many are, or can be classified to be) business owners, they can convert current income to dividends and pay no tax.The 9% tax on all purchases including food will place a further extraordinary bruedn on those least able to afford it, and this tax is in addition to state, county and local taxes therefore many will actually pay 19+% of essential goods and services. No wonder even the Cain economist' is backing away from this critical step in the plan and is suggesting a replacement 9% payroll tax so either way, those at the lowest end of the economic ladder will get hit the hardest. And, finally, this is only an interim step in Cains plan the final step is to replace the 9,9,9 with a 30% federal sales tax in addition to those pesky state, county and local taxes mentioned above, on all purchases including goods and services. How about paying almost 50% more than you're currently paying for groceries, prescriptions, etc just to support government? The only winners are the rich! It's a great plan for them but since they account for 1%, it further exacerbates the problem.

Pier you are not understanding that this is personal matter. You keep pushing the wrong question as per if he gave money to help someone or to keep them quiet. I agree with Cain's attorney that this is personal matter and Cain does not need to disclose who he has help or paid to help them. If this was so important, why didn't Clinton explain his affairs before or during his public service. Media is just looking for gosip and smear Cain name. Why don;t you get the accuser on the air and let them bring out the facts. Just texting someone does not make him guilty having an affair. So what if he gave her $1 or $1000 dollars to help this lady. Are you going to ask him how much money did he tip the lady waitress. Terrible interview by Pier MOrgan

I can't BELIEVE we will sit here as a nation and entertain this nonsense. Ok...guilty or innocent it does not matter. All I need to say is that if Cain didn't want everyone questioning his credibility in this matter then perhaps he should have just been open and honest from the beginning. Honestly is the best policy especially if you are running for President. I'm not here to talk about the private matters of Mr. Cain...blah blah" but Mr. Wood you are quick to try and tear down the character of these women and bring up their private matters. "She has been having financial problems" and therefore must only be out to get money with a lie. Um, not sure if you have been awake for the past few years but there are A LOT of people who are having financial problems presently. Try to spin some other angle at least. Blame the media! Are you not trying to USE the media to vilify (another of the Cain Camp's favorite words). Hypocrites all of them.

IF YOU ARE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES EVERY QUESTION IS RELEVANT. How does that not make sense to these clowns? They might not all be "smart questions" but I would expect my President to be able to answer them whether the answer is a lie or not. But when you dodge the questions and assume that the people watching you are stupid enough to not see the major gaps in the plot line of your story it's truly offensive. Honestly I wish the media would have more of a spine. Who cares about your sponsors? I'm tired of being entertained by these fools who seem to believe nobody can remember past yesterday. The world doesn't suffer from amnesia on a day to day basis and stories and history can be tracked. Ask the question and don't ask any other question until it is answered. "Did you have an affair with this woman?" "My 999 plan...yada yada" "I'm sorry, that isn't any way related to what I asked."

In the end really it isn't the "media" making the candidate look bad they are doing it themselves. Why? Because clearly they aren't ready to be President.

What an idiot. Herman Cain chose to run for the highest office in the United States if he does not think that his private life, which is what defines ones character, matters he is a fool. I don't understand why this attorney even appeared unless he thinks he can intimidate the press which probably will not work. The other reason could be to try to head off others who might come forward. The list of people whose indescretions have been publicized and caused them to lose elections or get ran out of office is a lengthy one.

    Piers,
I think you are missing the point. Suppose someone accuses you of having cheated on your income taxes in the past. Therefore it is judged you are dishonest and cannot be trusted to tell people the truth, Do you have to then present to the public all of your income statements and tax returns to prove your innocence even though your accuser has not offered any factual information of your tax cheating and dishonesty? This is the USA not England – here we are innocent until PROVEN guilty not until we are accused of guilt. You are just feeding into trying people in the media which of course the media seems to like to do because it increases ratings. Who is the real dishonest one here?

There can be 50 allegations, but until there are facts the media should go after accusers and find out facts.
If Mr Cain is lying WHY did he say he did not tell his wife about giving Money to Ms. White. If he is a lier he would have lied and said his wife knew.
If these are false allegations, based on how Mr Cain has handled the media, in my opinion, he can handle any terrorist and I will vote for him.

Just as Kadam says...if you betray your vows to the person closest to you in the world, you are not to be trusted. This goes for anyone, Right or Left wingers....stop trying to defend Cain by comparing him to others...he is a no good liar and his lawyer and he would stop at nothing , even destroy this woman...if it would help them save face. And i am not saying she is innocent, but she should not be attacked as if she is evil or something! If she is a democratic plant, how do you explain the money he gave her YEARS AGO!! Cain is Finished!!!

Why don't you start asking the Dunce, President, where is your original certified birth certificate, where are your grades from Harvard, etc. Why are you always missing action in Washington. Why did you try to spoil the Christmas Tree Lighting last night in New York. Why not ask where the Dunce has become the tax reduction President? I was once the victim of an outright bald face lie a woman told one of my clients and nearly lost that client. Fortunately for me I was able to immediately refute the allegations, but I am here to tell you that it isn't that hard for someone to smear you for their own benefit. Let's remember where we live Piers; we live in the U.S.A. where you are innocent until proven guilty. Your constant bullying of interviewees on your show is neither professional nor entertaining. Mr. Wood should be congratulated in his demeanor during his interview and you should be put on the next plane back to sleaze-land where you came from. Remember what happened to your former employers when the sleaze got out of control. You could be next. I will anxiously await your interview with any of Mr. Cain's accusers, particularly Ms. White. She will no doubt come to the interview with an attorney which she has no money to pay for.......hmmmm, do you wonder in your private moments why a woman who is flat broke would put herself in this situation? Gee, let me think......oh yeah, because she can make some money selling a story!! This is America, not the National Enquirer office. If you consider yourself a journalist let's see you put some meat into the story instead of innuendo.

Good job Pier on bringing more facts to light. You're a competent attorney Mr. Wood but it was a BAD to move put your your reputation on the line for Mr. Cain while stating that you don't have any evidence to suggest that Cain did not have an affair with that girl or others. Needlees to say, whatever is in the dark will come out in the light. I'll give this one about two more weeks max. It will be interesting to see if Cain is still in the race or not.

He's an attorney. Read the oath. He has to represent his client without bias or prejudice. Take that along with the process of innocent until proven guilty. That does not include trial be media. Cain may be a slime. If that is the case, the evidence will surface and that will be that.

Excellent interview. About as fair and balanced as it gets. But Piers, you could have REALLY backed attorney Wood into the corner. He stated at least a half dozen times that the allegations against Cain were "false." Well, "unsubstantiated" and "FALSE" are two very different things.

Piers should have asked Wood for the same "evidence" that Wood asked of Piers. In other words, Piers should have asked Wood what EVIDENCE he has to claim that the allegations against Cain are FALSE as opposed to unsubstantiated.

At that point, all Wood could have said is Yaba daba dab.

What happened to you last evening? Please have your surgar level checked. Did you learn nothing from your interview with Ms. O'Brien? Hopefully, there was no youth of America viewing your segment with Mr. Wood. You took bullying and badgering to a new height. I had just commented to a friend a few days ago that with a few more years on you and a little polishing, you had the ability to become a "top-notch" professional in your field. I sat in my own family room watching and feeling embarrassed. Did you really think you were going to get Mr. Wood to trip up and give you the next day's sound-bite. Please quit stroking yourself and return to the sometimes hard hitting, respectful, interviewer that your predecessor was. Of course, if your ratings keep dropping, you can always go over to Fox and become a sidekick for Hannity/O'Reilly. I force myself to watch them at times, just to keep all in balance and not get locked in to someone else doing my thinking. Mr. Wood was absolutely correct when he admonished most of the media reporting. It's tough some evenings to find a news media that doesn't resemble ET or TMZ. Leave the sensationalism to them and get back to what you once were doing pretty well.

It is unbelievable that this cheap tabloid style, which has no place on CNN, is given prime TV time, adding insult to injury. Piers Morgan just doesn´t know how to conduct an interview, he´s too much in love with the sound of his own voice. In an interview a guest should not be constantly and so rudely interrupted. He totally lacks any form of journalistic skill. There is a reason why BBC doors remain closed for him. CNN would be well advised to send him back to the Murdoch family. Morgan makes the mistake of attempting to turn the studio into a courtroom and taking on the role of prosecutor. I will not be missing anything by never giving him my time again.
