For January 6, 2012 – The U.S. economy added 200,000 jobs in December, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum spar in New Hampshire and New England Patriots assistant to coach at Penn State

• U.S. economy added 200,000 jobs in December: "American employers stepped up their hiring in December, bringing the unemployment rate down again. The economy added 200,000 jobs in the month, the Labor Department reported Friday, doubling the number of jobs added in November. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 8.5%, the lowest level since February 2009."

Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum spar in N.H. over congressional records: “With GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney feeling comfortable enough to campaign in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum on Thursday scoured New Hampshire for votes and hammered away at each other's congressional record.”

• Colombia to hand over American teen mistakenly deported: “A Dallas teen mistakenly deported to Colombia is set to return to the United States Friday, as her family plans to file lawsuits against the agencies involved in her removal from the country, their attorney said.”

• 25 dead in Syrian 'terrorist' blast: “A suicide bomber blew himself up in the heart of the Syrian capital Friday, killing at least 25 people and wounding 46 others, Syrian state media reported. The incident took place in the al-Midan quarter of Damascus.”

• Patriots' assistant Bill O'Brien to coach at Penn State: “New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien has agreed to replace Joe Paterno as Penn State's head coach, according to multiple reports.”
