Karen Santorum on the night she met Rick: "We poured our hearts out to each other"

As a junior associate at a law firm 23 years ago, Rick Santorum was charged with recruiting a new employee. He didn't know it at the time, but he was actually courting his future wife. "I wasn't supposed to be in town," says the former Senator. "You talk about an absolutely improbable sequence of events, which I ended up being on the recruiting trip. And I recruited her."

In a heartwarming sit-down with Piers Morgan airing tonight 9pmET/PT, the GOP candidate's wife shares the biggest public misconception about the man she's known for nearly a quarter century: "That he is not nice. He's just the nicest guy. He's got a big heart."

Tune in tonight at 9pm ET/PT as the GOP candidate talks foreign policy and faith, and is joined by his family in an exclusive interview.

We don't need a Pastor in Chief. His religion is not my religion. His beliefs are not my beliefs. There is a reason for separation of church and state, and it is that even 51 pct of the voters don't have the right to force their religious beliefs on 49 pct of the voters. Religion is not dictated by majority rule. He's got a big heart? It doesn't show, not at all. All I see is oppression, unbending rigid beliefs, total unwillingness to accept that others have beliefs different than his. Recently an audience member asked him about his ability to compromise, and his reply was something to the effect that he has a hard time compromising with someone who doesn't have the same beliefs he does. That says it all.

He shouldn't even be in politics. He should be in a pulpit somewhere.

Santorum lived in VA while a senator from Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania taxpayers paid for his kids home schooling even though he did not actually live there. He had a house in the Pittsburgh area, but did not live there. He wants government ouf of our private lives, yet he wants to ban contracption. If that isn't an invasion of privacy, I don't know what is. A vote for Santorum is a vote for STDs!

OMG. Piers is back to his rude, interrupting, ignorant self!!!! The people at CNN should straighten him out! And he sits there and gets "excited" (one can only imagine....) when he thinks he is getting his "guest" upset! One does not badger One's guest!!! And he gets that shrill sound in his disgusting voice. Enuff. good bye Piers. Oh Larry. Why did you leave us?

Mr. Morgan, You are too kind with Rick Santorum. The level of your interview is light and almost candid! You are not doing an interview with a movie star, R.Santorum is a candidate to eventually become the President of the United States! Why did you not tell him that he is incoherent when he says he is against abortion and on the other hand, he is in favor of death penalty? Death penalty means killing someone...
Please ask him "what is his vision of his country"? Twice during this interview, he said that "this country needs someone who has a vision for this country"! Ok, well what is his vision??? Thank you and good luck!

Kind of how the media interviews Barack Obama - like a celebrity rather than a President or Presidential candidate.

Jane – WI, Way to go! Thank you for your clear and undeniably logical answers. Are you a fan of Greg Koukl? Lise, abortion is taking the life of an innocent, unborn human being. This is called murder. The death penalty is not murder, just as the government killing someone in times of warfare is not murder, nor is a policeman justifiably killing a felon. The same if you killed someone in self defense.

EXACTLY ... there is a difference .Someone that has willing murdered people on Death Row – unless of course they are part of the Innocence Project – you will seldom see them show any remorse when its time for punishment. What does the pre born do to deserve any punishment by abortion dr's not to mention the mother who will suffer PSTD from it?

Piers Morgan's questions about gay marriage and abortion were very direct and GREAT. Mr Santorum has rigid beliefs, total unwillingness to accept that others have beliefs different than his answers were shockingly religious from the ancient times. He needs to open his eyes and look around to offer people FREEDOM about their choices such as gay marriage as many civilized countries have done. Otherwise, the brain drain will continue to Canada and other Western counties to find the freedom. I WILL NEVER VOTE someone as religious and narrow minded as him! God forbids America from candidate as Santorum!

I agree with Deb, Rick Santorum is invading people's privacy when he says he is against abortion and against gay marriage. It's none of his business! It is a private matter. I am extremely disapointed in Piers Morgan's "performance" this evening!

What the Santorums fail to mention is that Karen herself had an abortion to terminate the pregnancy that was Gabriel. Karens life was threatened with this unsustainable pregnancy and she has claimed she had to consider her other children and their life without a mother. I think this was a good decision to terminate but their hypocracy in denying this to others is pathetic.

What this shows is that Ric and his family's views are not as rigid as you are portraying. And putting forth your views, even if they are not liberal, is freedom too! We all are permitted to have our vision of what is right and wrong. I am tired of the Christian bashing out there. I met Ric years ago when he was in the MBA program at Pitt with my sister...he is truly a good guy.

The above comments are fascinating. Obviously when there's a chance to bash a principled conservative, any obligation to be factual or respectful of differences is waived. One could say, for example, that Bob illustrates rigid beliefs and total unwillingness to accept that others (such as Mr. Santorum) have beliefs different from his. Sometimes liberals are tolerant of everyone except conservatives.

I'm tolerant of Mr. Santorum's beliefs, he's welcome to believe what he wants. What he's not allowed to do is force me to believe what he does. I don't and I won't. And I'll fight him, you and whomever to the death to defend my right to follow my own faith, and for that matter your right to do the same.

They brought their dead baby home for their other kids to play with?? Are people seriously viewing this as "Totally OK"? This is scary! And the nerve on them to say what they do in their private lives is private but they want the government to ban abortion and contraception thus infringing in other people's lives! So limited government is great, as long as it follows your belief and "values"? Hypocrites! Hey Karen, how about the abortionist that was 40 years your senior that you were romantically involved with for 6 years prior to meeting Mr. Frothy here? Where were you "values" then?

These people are terrifying! Not getting my vote, that's for sure, this country deserves better.

Ross – we already "have much better"! President Obama!
All the self-pity of this family makes me sick! How can you, after talk like that, hold the GOP/TP line of Greed over Need??? No concerns for other children that include healthcare, education, environment, jobs for their parents etc. etc. These GOP clowns, with their bible in hand, talking about “good-capitalism” (robbing the country!), tax-cuts for the rich (robbing the middle class!), promoting war and bad-mouthing others, distortion of facts and obstructing progress (not to difficult when they have theirs with the idea – you try to get yours trickled down) and outright lying about the Presidents work – all this is simply disgusting. Never did they all show their true character so clearly to the people as in these primaries! So, please, look at them for your selfs and vote responsible in 2012!

You sound like you are describing the typical Barack Obama interview, especially when he was running for President. Very little substance, and a whole lot of fluff. Most of his interviews sounded like an episode of Entertainment Tonight.

Jsne, as a liberal I agree that the media should be asking our President hard questions. When he was elected, I was a little uncomfortable with the kind of "star treatment" he received even before he was elected. Our representatives, including the president, must be accountable to the public. The media fail to do their part of the bargain if they don't constantly ask and demand hard questions of both sides of the political spectrum.

    One observation.....
why is it that pro-life conservatives are always challenged about their support of the death penalty, yet pro-abortion liberals are never questioned about their opposition to the death penalty?
If you are against the death penalty because of the possibility that an innocent will be put to death, what about the millions of innocent babies that have been put to death via abortion?

Um, because when you say you're PRO-LIFE you can't all of a sudden say it's OK to kill people, be it through death penalty or war. Duh!
Pro-life is pro-life. If you like the death penalty and/or war, you're not pro-life, stop kidding yourself.

If one is "pro-life", then the death penalty is not consistent with that belief. I do recall that one of the ten commandments was "Thou shalt not kill". It doesn't qualify itself with "thou shalt not kill unless another commits a heinous crime against you". Since most 'pro-life" people come to their belief via their religious beliefs, its inconsistent to be anti-abortion but for the death penalty. Life is life. The real problem with the death penalty is that it denies the possibility of rehabilitation and parole.

    Piers,
After Larry King's too long career asking wimpy questions and never demanding answers, I thought you were a breath of fresh air. But, alas, you are following in the CNN censorship footsteps. The only meaningful question to Santorum was why he was pushing his religious beliefs, and when he said they weren't religious, you changed the subject. If he has his way, he would set America back 100 years with coat hanger abortions and too many unwanted children in a world of dwindling resources. Today, the R in Republican stands for "R"eligion. The major reason America has accomplished so much is the separation of church and state... witness the countries in the world where that is not the case... ever heard of Iran? Santorum is a religious zealot, and I thought you were brave enough to bring that out.

I have many relatives who like Mr Santorum apparently has strong religious beliefs. Religion shouldn't be the basis for public policy because not all citizens share the same beliefs. Public policy and government has to be on the basis of what is in the best interest of the nation, not just those who share your particular brand of belief. That is my problem with Mr Santorum; he can't operate outside of his beliefs. You see this in his comments about gay marriage, human induced global warming (which is strongly supported by evidence) and a few years ago, evolution (he tried to introduce an amendment to support intelligent design, which is creationism). Government requires reason, not religion as its basis. Otherwise you quickly end up in a situation where you are putting large segments of a society at a disadvantage. This is not the basis for goverment in the 21st century where we have many complex problems that require reason and compromise to solve them. Also Piers fawned to much in this interview. Maybe it was a tool to get the candidate at ease and to open up but it came across as rather too smarmy. Mr Santorum has a very clear record with strong public statements that were really not explored.
