READ about Piers Morgan's long career in journalism here.
Only one infectious disease has ever been eradicated: smallpox. But thanks largely to the efforts of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, the former president told Piers Morgan that guinea worm will soon be the second. "We found 3-and-a-half million cases of guinea worm still existing, and now we have less than a thousand cases, so we'll soon eliminate guinea worm from the face of the earth," said Carter.
After visiting more than 26,000 village in 200 countries, Carter looks forward to the end of his crusade.
"When the final case of guinea worm is resolved – it will be in South Sudan," he told Morgan. "It will be a time for celebration, not only for me and Rosalyn and everyone at the Carter Center, I think for the entire world."

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the interview with President and Ms. Carter...both of them are such decent and kind human beings. Really, I did enjoyed it and also learned more positive elements of Presidents Carters time as our president than I knew. History will eventually treat him well..sort of delayed like it did with Truman. The one point that made me uncomfortable was at its conclusion...Pierce Morgan SHOULD have reached over to shake both President and Ms. Carters hand. It made the end of the interview appear awkward. It would only be good manners to shake hands and show appreciation and thankfulness when one is the host or hostess.
It was a very nice interview – with two such sweet people. Pres. Carter mentioned something about peanuts – at the time I thought it was important, and cannot remember what he said. I would like to pass the information along – if someone can tell me what he said about peanuts. Thanks
The most decent President in American history. Good to see both of them.

The unfortunate aspect of viewers having no knowledge of a subject then taking the comments of Carter verbatim is "you don't know what you don't know". I found it very unfortunate Piers did not call Carter on any aspects of his rendition of his presidency's history – Piers, I enjoy your program but come prepared next time.
Carter's presidency was a mess and to adress just one aspect, the world learned very quickly he was not to be respected: The US hostages held in Iran were during his years as was the Soviets (remember the Cold War?) invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. The world view of the US under Carter was that of a pushover and these are 2 examples.
Apparently his memory for the facts has "slipped" over the years. It took Reagan's election for Iran to release the hostages (January 21, 1981, the day of Reagans' inauguration) after 444 days and the US effort to help drive the Soviets from Afghanistan in 1989.
There were other oversights made during this interview, so I suggest Piers and others do some homework befoew gushing over Carter's presidency, generally regarded by historians as in the bottom 1/2 of all presidencies.
Carter has been MUCH more effective in life after his term.
Unfortunately, it appears your understanding of history my be slightly skewed as well. The Algiers accords are what lead to the release of the Iranian hostages. These accords were negotiated in full under the Carter administration and signed by Iran just as Regan was being sworn in – its a matter of progress and negociation, not good karma brought on by Regan. As Far as Afghanistan goes, I'm not sure if you are referring to the treaty he negotiated which our Senate failed to ratify, His lack of control over revolutions in Middle Eastern countries (Just like what's been happening over the last year), or his idea of being more supportive and diplomatic rather than blatantly invasive in a sovereign country in trying to deterring an invasion by the soviets.
I suppose the support we show for our leaders is a matter of how well we understand the situations they were operating under and how their actions align with our own views. In my opinion, Carter did a pretty great job given the global environment at the time.
