Chaka Khan on Clive Davis' party in the wake of Whitney Houston's passing: "I don't understand how that party went on"

On Saturday, legendary singer Whitney Houston suffered a tragic death, and tonight Piers Morgan was joined by a panel of music insiders that knew her best.

Singer-songwriter Chaka Khan first recorded the single "I'm Every Woman," a song Houston took to new heights 15 years later. Calling the late star her "little sister," Chaka Khan questioned the decision to proceed with Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party just hours after Houston's passing:

"I thought that was complete insanity," Chaka Khan told Morgan. "I don't know what could motivate a person, to have a party, in a building, where the person, whose life he had influenced so enormously, and whose life had been affected by her...I don't understand how that party went on."

Sitting down live with Morgan as part of a tribute show, Chaka Khan agreed in honoring Houston on Saturday night, but would have preferred a different environment:

"A more honest tribute, in my opinion, would have been, maybe, call everybody together, say a prayer, let's eat dinner, and go home."

Watch the above video, as the 10-time Grammy Award winner shares memories of a woman she says she "cried for."

Have to agree with Chaka, seemed very callous to me, and disturbing that "friends" could be attending a celebratory event while her body was undergoing crime scene processing in the same building. This wasn't some remote location, it was within feet of where she just died and still remained for the duration of the party. Is it any wonder that her child, who was also in the same building, was freaking out? Many so called friends of her mother's continued on with their previously scheduled evening party plans.

They are not "friends", they are people in the business. Life does go on.

I don't recall Piers being interruptive. I just thought thru the whole discussion how ironic it is that these "friends" feel the need to get on a show and recollect, but what did they do to help? The other friend she last performed with, I apologize I forgot her name, as I had never heard of her... didn't seem to think it was out of line for Whitney, a recovering addict to drink champagne. These people were not her friends.

I agree. It's tragic she passed away but those people at that party earned the right to celebrate their accomplishments and many minimum wage employees were depending on that party to pay their rent.

Piers Morgan was impossible this evening, not allowing his guests to speak, always interrupting them so that he could go into a direction that would flame the sensationalism. Chaka was great and I wish he would have let her speak more, even if her timing was a bit slow for the good ole 'commercials and time limits' Chaka is a lady, with real experience in the music business, her own demons and devils and had been a great friend to Whitney. I hope CNN gets rid of Piers

I agree with Chaka Khan. It was extremely insensitive, to say the least, that the party went on. Clive Davis showed no compassion or respect for Whitney Houston or her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who was there at the hotel. She'd just lost her mother. I just don't understand how those people could have been so cold-hearted, yet they don't miss an opportunity to jump in front of a tv camera and say how devastated they are to have lost their "close friend, Whitney." It's heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers go to Bobbi Kristina, Cissy Houston, and the family and true friends of Whitney Houston, that includes Chaka Khan. Stay strong and God Bless.

What I've taken away from this entire tragic episode is that people do not understand addiction. Kelly Price and the other young woman who DENIED Whitney exhibited 'chemically altered' behavior at Kelly's party are complicit in furthering Whitney's self-destruction. They did not and still do not understand that alcohol is a drug that is widely known to compromise one's better judgement. When sober, and if you aren't a drug abuser, you KNOW not to mix alcohol with prescription drugs. Entertainment history is filled with examples: Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge, Keith Ledger, and the list goes on.

Everyone in show business is in pain. It's part of the struggle to achieve success. It's built on all the sacrifices and compromises we have to m make to make our careers a success. The old adage that "the show must go on" bears testament that we must continuously "suck it up" no matter how badly we in the entertainment industry feel about a situation. One of my mentors once told me that 'no one gets out of this business alive'. The only difference is that, if you truly make it, the media machine will knock themselves out to devote lots of time and money to pay tribute to your memory in the media.

Famous or not, those who don't learn the lessons presented to us, YET AGAIN, may be doomed to fall victim by repeating it in some shape or form.

Thank you Chaka for speaking out so candidly and questioning the decision to carry on partying in spite of Whitney's body still in the hotel, WHAT A DISGRACE!!! WHERE'S THE COMPASSION and RESPECT for her and her family?
Also, it is clear that there IS a problem in the music industry with DRUGS and the pressure to keep delivering the goods, night after night, album after album, year after year under the HUGE glare of the media and public spotlight. I, for one can arleady see other artists who are vunerable. Something needs to be put in place to support these gifted indivduals before another tradegy. RIP Whitney, MJ, AMY

Thank you Chaka Khan! You are a beautiful God fearin' Woman. You speak the truth no matter what! You are fearless and an inspiration. Someone needed to say something and speak up on Whitney's behalf. Too many great people have been chewed up and spit out by money hungry criminals and I'm just upset that they got Whitney. She seemed to be a loving person. She reminds me of my own mother. God Bless.

Loved the video nice and simple; reertsenping her just having a one-on-one with the Almighty as the song does.To all of those who say her voice is mediocre and not as good/strrong as it used to be, I agree. BUT I think just like anyone who has been away from their craft for an extended period of time, she will get stronger as time progresses. You wouldn't expect a boxer who hasn't been in the ring for a long time to return and deliver TKOs immediately upon his return. Same concept here. I think if she continues to sing, her voice will only strengthen. I bought her cd and I think it was actually very good for her return to music. She has my support 100%.

It was incredible to go on with the party in the same building that held the body of their friend. If they had been in Canada and the body thousands of miles away I could have understood it but right there on the spot, it was barbaric. It is the same sort of insensitivity as caused the bankers to behave so badly. Nothing matters anymore except the weak admiting their responsability for every thing. We live in wicked times and it is not because of drugs but because of the wolfishness of the successful that these times are wicked. rose macaskie madrid.

They are business people like anyone else, just more famous. Maintaining an annual tradition is not barbaric or crude. Those who chose to attend had the choice; no one forced them to go. If we had to stop life for every loss, sadly we wouldn't be living much. Many lives were lost this year in that business, such as Amy Winehouse – I didn't see any parties being stopped for her, and I don't see why it should have been cancelled. Like I said, the guests weren't forced to attend.

At the very least the party should have been cut short, just as Chaka suggested, and we're all indebted that she had the courage to speak the truth to this abomination. This is an indictment of Hollywood in all its fraudulent glory, their 'mourning' did not stop them from gussying themselves up and doing the press gauntlet and guzzling champagne, knowing all the while that a corpse lay upstairs of one of their 'family' who some even claimed to have loved as a child. Ask yourself who YOU have sincerely and truly loved since childhood and would you yet party the night away the day of their death while their physical presence still lay upstairs. It's uncomphrensible and yes, insanity. Such utter frauds who have completely exposed themselves as not caring one bit beyond having their own 'face in the place.' Thank you, Chaka.

I agree. The news broke my heart and left me in such a daze that I couldn't ever remember that I hadn't eaten dinner that night. Chaka knows what a shocking blow this was to all that genuinely cared for Whitney. Have a party later to honor Whitney's fun-loving side; or turn it into a fundraiser for medical research; but an industry party was just so insulting to the memory of this woman as a human being as opposed to a singing cash-machine.

When I heard the Clive Davis party was going on as scheduled, I was wondering what alternate universe these people were living in tht they thought continuation of a party plan was a good idea. Have to respect Chaka Khan for having the courage to speak up on behalf of her friend's memory on CNN for the total lack of respect shown for Whitney's passing within a few hours IN THE SAME BUILDING as the party took place, and being present for her daughter even when Bobbie Brown decided it was more important to perform in concert than be physically present for his daughter in LA. My heart goes out to this young child at this time. May God hold you in the palm of His hand and grant you peace and understanding that you did everything you could for your mother. Thoughts and prayers to the Houston family at this time.

i was watching E! News, the last known video of Whitney. Clive was doing an interview with Monica and Brandy and
whitney popped up and told Bobbi-Kristina to give her godfather a hug...

it strikes me as very odd that this man, who discovered whitney, by all accounts was like a father to her AND the godfather to her ONLY child...could not cancel a party and be with his goddaughter. or at least cut it short or change it up as Chaka suggested.

Even the fact that the girl's own father did not get on a plan immediately upon hearing about his ex-wife's death...if not for whitney but for his child.

something is very weird going on in that town....we are truly living in the last days!

Yes Chaka spoke the truth, if you have a shred of affection for this woman you can't possibly be partying, smiling, taking pictures minutes after you found out about her death and knowing that the dead body is still upstairs. yes "the show must go on" but there are some things we shouldn't tolerate as human beings smh

Whitney was out of control at the party for Ms. Price and had an altercation with Tracy Francis (her group of people crowded around to block the view from other patrons) which is where the blood on leg and scratches on her wrist came from. Come on look at all of the pictures that were taken there and you can see she is upset going off about something. Why is everyone covering up the fact that she was partying hard?

I completely agree with Ms. Khan. It was very irresponsible for Mr. Davis to continue this party in the same hotel where his friend died when her body was still upstairs. I have heard that Clive Davis and Whitney Houston were more than just business associates, they were freinds and close so it also baffled me when I heard Sunday morning that he had continued with his party. His excuse that the family agreed to it doesnt fly because the family shouldnt have been put in a positon to make that decision. He should have known better and not asked them what he should do. Someone you have known for more than 20 years is lying dead on 4 floors above you, you dont continue with a party especially when your own GODCHILD is upstairs dealing with the shocking death of her mother. I have heard Clive Davis is a nice person who genuinely cared about Whitney but this was in very poor taste and judgement. How did Clive feel when he heard that while he was busy partying with this friends, his godchild was being transported to hospitals for anxiety? Wrong

Chaka is positively right! There is no way that "non-tribute party" should have gone on. Clive can not justify it. He should have insisted that the party be postponed–but I think too much money was involved. Whitney was a money-maker for Clive, the greedy sonava@#$#@! That's is all! I don't care what emotional distress he feigned to be in. His actions prove more than his words. And I know we all grieve differently–that was not grief but pure ignorance to continue a party with her dead body still in the building. They didn't give a rat's furry a$@ about Whitney!

THANK YOU CHAKA KHAN, for being a voice for WHITNEY, all her peers should have took a stand with you. if they call them self a friend. Clive Davis a 20 year old side by side friend but not until the end. He should of had some compassion for Whitneys family and not make a decision to proceed with the annual pre grammy party. I personally think that Whitney was just another meal ticket for him all along knowing that her body was undergoing a crime scene investigation, on the 4th floor. How could you enjoy the party knowing that this tragedy had happened right under their noses. My personal opinion from the bottom of my heart, I think that Whitney was free from drugs so please let her go home in peace with the lord. Whitney, WAS..IS..AND WILL ALWAYS BE AN ICON, A LEGEND AMD WORLDS BIGGEST STAR IN MY EYES. She is irreplaceable. Thanks again Chaka Khan for speaking out on her behalf. I must applaud you for this insightful interview, Mr. Morgan. Of all the coverage, I believe that your 1:1 with Chaka Khan was the most honest "insider information" regarding the tragedy of Whitney Houston's demise. My ears perked when Ms. Khan elaborated on how things could have been handled differently, and more responsibly, by Ms. Houston's handlers. Then, on the following night, I listened with eager anticipation for an echo of a similar sense of resposibility during the interview with Baby Face. But that did not happen. You updated viewers that the "tally" was 1:3 – in terms of whether there was a sense of responsibility among her inner-circle for Ms. Houston's welfare. The whole thing seems to circle-back to the classic question: Am I my brother's keeper? Sadly, it seems that only one-third of us still believe and would answer "yes." The other two-thirds, apparently, would say "no." That is a sad societal commentary. It begs me to wonder whether a moral compass is akin to some antiquated jewel that's tucked away in a dark, recessed corner of peoples' consciousness.

Piers blew off Chaka, th emost insightful guest and is cowtowing to t the likes of Dr. Drew, a fame driven, ( if fame was a substance), this man is an addict to the spotight of other's problems. I take vicodain and klonpin for muscle pain and spasms due to MS and keep a log each day as to when and what I HAD to take. I don;t doctor shop, but have had to fill RX's earlier than the date they ran out simply because of pain. I take what I have to and wait as long as I can until the pain ius unbearable b4 taking a pill. I HAVE built up a resistance and whne I go more than 8 hours, i suffer signs of withdrawal, (flu). Before I got sick I took ambien on long flights and YES had a wine with the pill as ANderson Cooper admitted yesterday. fF you travel first or business, you witness 1/2 the passengers popping a pill and taking a wine.
before take-off. Dr.Drew is yammering on about doctors writing excessive RX's for the common man. UNless they are paying for the extra RX's with cash, the systems for your insurance plan DENY a refill before the month is up, so he is NOT clearly defining how people get extra RX's ...THEY PAY FULLL PRICE WITHOUT INSURANCE and thus the reason why rich celebs cna afford and do this. So with everyone cracking down on these RX's think of those who need the drugs and who play by the rules with the few exceptions of running out of painkillers, etc a week early. I know for a fact that Blue Cross in alignment with the pharmacies have a system that RX's cannot be refilled before 30 days. So the talk is cheap, th ecelebs pay cash for their extra RX's and stay off the system. It is the doctors who write a 2nd 3rd and 4th RX that are a problem and they are not the doctors that cater to a common man like me.
I am responsible and need these drugs for muscle tremors and nerve damage due to the MS and am mad at him making such a broad sweeping comment about widespread abuse. These people must have RX's written under different names and or pay full cash w/o insurance as insurance have check on the system with pharmacies. Dr. Drew will enjoy this time in the limelight again until th enext tragedy. His contributions are as meaningful as his commentaries on his cable THE MAN SHOW. Make the distinction Mr Drew and get your facts straight. The only guest who had the courage to speak the truth appplicable to Miss Houston's particular case was CHaka Khan – a party four flors below hwere the body lie awaiting investigation is shameful. He should have dlayed the "party" and made it a short tribute – appetizers and drinks and called it a night after an inpromptu tribute to Whitney. If people like Diane Warren, schlock writer of a million insipid songs, said she felt wierd sitting there drinking and eating then she should not have attended or left, but people have to be there, have to be seen. The idea of the party going on is a disgrace. Mr. Davis could ahve taken the finaciual loss by cancelling , knowing that it would be paid for well in excess with the surge in Whitney's music sales for the week – it will be his bread that is buttered by her sales. He could have afoorded to cancel. Shame on anyone who attended and shame on Mr. Davis for not cancelling or just simplifying it all to be a SMALL tribute to Whitney for a few hours.

The Kyochero (whatever) adverts that display before EVERY video is so disgusting I was actually cursing violently at my laptop after about three videos.
I even went to replay a video and the advert went to play again, I closed the link.

I suggest offer a 5-second skip option, like YouTube.
It has put me off CNN videos, considering they tend to be only about 1 minute or so long.
Wathcing 30 seconds of a Printing Company advert will NEVER justify a 1 minute video.
I will not be watching anymore videos (and will probably never visit the site again).

What I have constantly told persons is that when searching for a good online electronics store, there are a few components that you have to consider. First and foremost, you want to make sure to look for a reputable and reliable store that has received great reviews and ratings from other consumers and business sector advisors. This will make sure that you are getting along with a well-known store that provides good service and support to their patrons. Thank you for sharing your thinking on this weblog.

I believe that avoiding packaged foods would be the first step to lose weight. They may taste beneficial, but prepared foods possess very little vitamins and minerals, making you consume more to have enough strength to get through the day. When you are constantly feeding on these foods, transferring to whole grain products and other complex carbohydrates will help you have more power while consuming less. Great blog post.
