Michael J. Fox on Rick Santorum's anti-stem cell research beliefs: "I don't want to suppress ideas I don't agree with"

Coming up this evening, Guest Host Week continues on "Piers Morgan Tonight," as advertising executive and television veteran Donny Deutsch sits in for Piers Morgan, in the process, bringing his unique blend of perspective and personality.

Following Jane Lynch on Monday, and Wolf Blitzer from Tuesday, Deutsch is the week's third fill-in host, welcoming actor and author Michael J. Fox for an inspiring sit down interview.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, Fox has since become a leading activist for research towards finding a cure, and tonight reacts to politicians – including Rick Santorum – who are against stem cell research:

"He's spoken out against science, he's spoken out against education," says Fox. "You get people who don't know science, railing about science, and it's dangerous to those of us who might benefit from it."

Since establishing The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000, the 50-year-old has helped raised 285 million dollars. And on the backdrop of Santorum's two primary wins on Tuesday, Fox suggests that having the conservative Republican in the national spotlight might potentially benefit his cause:

"On one hand, I'm kind of hoping he gets the nomination, because he will be very vocal on these issues, and it will set up a stark contrast," Fox explains to the guest host. "I don't want to suppress ideas I don't agree with...All things being equal, again, and with a vote hopefully things are equal, those ideas can be met and dealt with."

Watch the clip, listen to the interview, and tune in this evening at 9 p.m. EST/PST for a one-time only edition of "Donny Deutsch Tonight."

Hello: More blather, dribble from old failed talk show host Donny Deutsch. What Rush Limbaugh said years ago pales to the idiots like Maher, Matthews, Ed Schultz and the whole stinking left wing, main stream media, slanted news disreporters. The only ones dopier than president Barack Hussein Obama are the idiots who voted for him.

So says the vile, hateful, conservative right-wing nut job. I guess you can accuse others of such hatefulness, then rant in the same manner and think it's justified. Do you really comprehend how bad you sound right about now.

Yvonne: same here. I find Piers hard to watch, and I only tune in if the guest is really special. Donny was a breath of fresh air. I had a very distinct feeling that even the guests breathed easier knowing they would not be rudely interrupted and offered personal opinions by the host. Did we really need an import? Tonight proves the answer is a definite "NO"!

totally agree. cannot stand piers at all. besides he is involved in that phonehacking scandal with that newspaper he used to work for. piers' face looks like a crumpled up napkin - it is so unpleasant to look at, that i have to look away when he is talking. his accent is irritating as can be, and his personality is obnoxious as a pig. there is nothing going for him at all. there are millions of people worthy of being in that host position - 80% of cnn's own anchors are worthwhile - a few: carol costello, randi kaye (who i nominate), elliot spitzer (who should replace erin burnett cannot stand her), wolf blitzer, john king, anderson cooper, christine romans (but definitely not ali vasher or whatever his name is, he is as ugly and obnoxious as piers). cnn should get Carol Burnett do a guest host spot sometime. that would be worth watching. 🙂

This post is for Michael J Fox. My brother has Parkinsonism Dystonia Musculorum. He has been in a wheel chair for 20 years and was taking 5 different medications. He is now taking steps and his symptoms have subsided somewhat and his health continues to get better and better. His nervous system is regenerating slowly but surely. I know there is hope for Parkinsons Disease and would like to share it with Micahel J Fox. My brother's name is Edgar Wallace. He is a writer, who has written many classical music pieces and whose mother, uncles, and cousin are well known actors in Mexico City. I am certain Michael J Fox would be blessed to meet Edgar and learn about the whys of his progress. He is welcome to write to me at We are NOT looking for funding but to share a window of opportunity. Hopefully it can be thanks to Piers Morgan Tonight !

michael j. fox is not this pro science guy he portrays himself to be. yes scientists will tell you they need stem cell research but they will also tell you they need animal research. if you look at fox'x history you will find he has been opposed to animal research. hardly a pro science positon. also i find it interesting that donnie has a problem with rush limbaugh's language but has no problem with richard cohen comparing republican's to the taliban.

Donny Deutsch is worse than Piers Morgan, if that is even possible. The Michael Fox interview was terrible. Where is it not offensive to threaten bodily harm to a man for any reason? Michael Fox sounds ridiculous in justifying Bill Maher.

Donny: Worst tv host on a national format I've seen. He was so amateur; He sounded like a teenage kid when he got worked up. Poor host and difficult to watch. At first I thought they had a cancellation and just pulled someone from the set to sit in as host.

Michael Fox is not saying the full truth about the research he wants done. Santorum and other conservatives are not against stem cell research, but they do not support embroyonic stem cell research. There are many therapies now that are derived from adult stem cells but none from embroyonic stem cells despite the effort to find one, so the adult stem cells actually work better any way. For those of us who know through science and common sense a person is a person no matter how small the use of embroyos for experments is barbaric

Yeah, but the truth isn't important to liberals. They just want to kill babies, even if it does nothing for science.

No you are wrong there, he has been quite open in interviews in the past many times about wanting to use embryonic stem cells because at that stage they have the potential to become anything.

The way he put it was that these embryonic stem cells are destroyed as part of fertilisation treatment, they are never to become life, only be destroyed. So his stance is really pro life because he wants to use those cells to help find a cure for people not even born yet that will suffer from diabetes, parkinsons, spinal cord injury etc.

But how in the hell do you manage to describe that as barbaric? using the cells to help study and find treatments for people vs destroying them is barbaric? you have no logic at all and shouldn't really be commenting at least until you become more informed.

After @55 years as a Southern Baptist, @20 of those years as a Pastor, at Easter Vigil 2010 I was confirmed into the Roman Catholic Church. I have continued my practice as a Protestant of reading the Bible through each year and since 2010 also read the Catholic Catechism completely through each year. I am beginning my 3rd journey through it.

No one has to be a Christian, Muslim, Mormon, Hindu or whatever. But if you are going to be a Christian et al then be what you claim to be. No one has to be a Catholic Christian, but if you claim to be a Catholic Christian be one.
As someone who takes faith very seriously, I prayed, studied and labored long in responding to God's 'Moment of Grace' in my life in leading me to the Catholic Faith. I am not writing to criticize Mr Morgan, but after trying to listen to numbers of his programs, it troubles me when he makes mention 'I am Catholic' but he obviously does not hold to the Catholic Faith as is clearly set forth in the Catechism, the Bible, the Sacred Traditions of the Church, and the teachings of the Magisterium. If you are Catholic, the faith is very clear on abortion, gay marriage, contraception, family, citizenship, and many things that have been called "Social Issues" in a negative light. As I said, no one has to be a Catholic Christian but if one claims to be Catholic...then be an honest Catholic. I would expect and respect no less of a Muslim, Hindu, Atheist or whatever.

None of these politicians care about these things UNLESS it affects their family. I assure you that if his wife had this disease, he would be rallying for support of it. It is the same ol crap with these people.

So funny to watch this now (May 2). Santorum was just a blip, although his (and other's) ideas on research continue to be dangerous.

Voodoo views on science can not be allowed to go unchallenged, whether it's an attempt to push that oxymoron known as "Creation Science", or religious views being used to obstruct research on subjects such as stem cells.

M.J. says that people that block the science that can potentially help him are dangerous and must be stopped. If he's just the product of evolution then on what basis can he claim anyone is dangerous? He has a disease given to hiim by evolution. What right does have had to demand that humanity find him a cure to what evolution brought him. Further, what right does he have to say that human embrios should be used for his cure? If he demands repsect for his life and yet has no respect for othef human life, then what leg does he have to stand on. Call me all the names you like, until you repsect life, don't demand that we save yours.

Michael J. Fox I agree with you "I don't want to suppress ideas I don't agree with" I think we are falling behind in this field. I think when america falls behind in anything it is a major problem. We must continue researching Stem cells in a safe yet aggressive manner.
