Gloria Allred on an era of unsafe and illegal abortions: "It was what many of us call our women's Vietnam"

Coming up this evening on "Piers Morgan Tonight," attorney and television personality Lisa Bloom, and high-profile feminist lawyer Gloria Allred, join the host for a candid, and engaging hour-long interview.

Sitting directly across from Piers Morgan, the 70-year-old Allred discusses a traumatizing tale which inspired her to become an advocate for women's rights. Raped at gunpoint, and impregnated during a trip to Mexico in 1966, Allred subsequently had a dangerous, illegal abortion, and explains how the personal incident helped shape her professionally:

"I am a person who strongly believes in fighting against violence against women and the right to choose legal, safe, and available abortions because of my own life experience," Allred tells Morgan.

More than forty years since the experience, Allred vividly recalls a dangerous period for women facing unwanted pregnancies:

"It was what many of us call our women's Vietnam. More women died or were maimed by illegal, unsafe abortions when it was illegal than, frankly, men ever died or were maimed in Vietnam" she describes. "This is an overlooked fact, and that's why I feel so passionate about fighting to make sure that women have their reproductive rights."

Watch the clip, and tune in this evening at 9 p.m. as Allred and Bloom share experiences from careers in court, and on television.

My wife and I just saw the movie HUNGER GAMES. I implore you, advise all you know – DO NOT see this movie. It is disgusting. The premise is disgusting. No one, ESPECIALLY YOUTH, should see this movie. The fact that anyone would make a movie about children killing children for entertainment, or that schools would encourage kids to read these books is outrageous. And we wonder why kids come to school and kill? Please don't see this movie!! Please Please cover this movie and discourage everyone from allowing their kids to see this movie. PLEASE do no ignore this important issue. PLEASE!

Hey FROOT LOOP... Just because someone holds their morals to a very high standard does not make them a JESUS FREAK. They were just expressing their feelings, and you bash em down? Great person you are. How can you even use those 2 words together? It is very offensive. So what if Someone DOES worship Jesus, is that something terrible? I would rather associate with someone who worships Jesus, than someone who has no faith or belief in anything. Sounds like YOU are the one with a problem.. Too much of that Koolaide, Hop on the wagon for awhile, you might see life in a whole new perspective.

The premise of the story is the the games ARE awful. That the future is being written by greedy men who see FEAR as a viable and necessary tool to maintain peace.
The premise is meant to get a youthful generation thinking about what the future could hold if apathy and disinterest become the norm....don't sell the Boogey Man based on something you don't understand.
This is one book that does NOTHING to encourage youth on youth violence. It is a marketing campaign against it.

It's a work of fiction, I believe it is loosely based on Shirley Jackson's famous short-story: The Lottery. The premise that children are fought to fight to the death IS disgusting, that's the point, these people were forced to do something reprehensible by their government. Starting to sound familiar? I won't spoiler the series but you're an idiot if you're personally offended by a fictional story.

I was wondering what Gloria Allred is doing for men trying to get custody. There is NO equality for men in family courts. I want equal rights for women but I also want men to get treated fair

I agree. There are still a few good men out there. Some fathers are even better more respectable parent than the mothers are. A man that is a real father deserves all the rights that a mother has. Not every apple in the basket is a rotten apple. Its wrong to just throw the entire basket in the trash.Things need to change.

Love Gloria Allred and Lisa Bloom. However, I am so glad that Pierce Morgan questioned her about Tiger Wood's mistress who continually saw Tiger Woods for three years. She knew he was married with two children. It's her own fault .. Im sorry she was distressed but it served right.

So glad he called her on that question.

Thank you. I like Pierce and I watch him as much as I can.

It was fine that Piers questioned her, but he overdid it. He went on and on and she answered it many times. He went on with it so long it was totally boring. There were so many other things I would be interested in, but he goofed it.

I agree with Kelly. Ms. Allred was never able to satisfactorily defend her choice of this client/cause. Piers Morgan is to be congratulated for persisting and prevailing against a skilful lawyer (or two), despite all the good things the lady may have accomplished. I also agree with men who sometimes get abused in their marriages and there is no male Gloria Allred to help them.

Thank you so much for your response. To tell you truthfully, that's how I felt on the subject. I would have been embarrassed in the first place to hire her as an attorney knowing that i would be exposed to who I really was. And then a movie to make some dough. Gloria said "we have to make a buck".

I so appreciate your response that feels the same way regarding issue.

        Thank you for your response.

Hard to feel sorry for most of her clients. They knew what they were getting into when they had an affair with a married man. AND they were surprised to learn they were lied to. Lawyers are there to make money for themselves.

I agree with Piers. You can't use your trauma for gain, particularly when you put yourself in the situation in the first place. She knew he was married, how could she have any expectation of being the only OTHER woman

When wingnuts see the name Gloria Allred, they don't read any fthruer the allegations against Cain are prima facie false, in their eyes.I've read that Cain's numbers have peaked, no doubt due to these scandals. And I suspect that people like Karl Rove have something to do with this. The David Remnick article is good. What's frightening me now, is the being built by the Kochs.

Dear Piers, Your show tonight is giving me hope. If I can get advice/referral in MD from this fabulous attorney, Gloria Allred...I could get out of this funk and depression that The University of Maryland has caused me. My charges are racial discrimination. I will be representing myself(I have no experience) because I feel the Union is in harmony with the University. My Union rep. told untruths(about not being able to reach me) and had my case dismissed. The Union president said he could not do that so I got it reopened. They emailed me and then told another union rep to call me and tell me it is not on. The Union won't support me, no attorney because it was subtle but oh, so hurtful and humiliating. I was asked after six months, Debbie do you know how to clean the coffee pot, Debbie Sit in that chair and see if it wobbles, Take down those Blacks in Psychology pics. so much more – my first task as administrative assist for UMD was to clean the storage room and take inventory – 3 days...I need help. Please, at least ask Gloria if she can advise me or refer. I need someone with guts. I was assigned other peoples work which none of the Whites in my position had to do.
    Thanks for listen,

When Mr. Morgan interviews these two women, I imagine that he is dropping raw eggs on the floor in random locations while they scramble to clean them up. Here is the problem.

    1. They believe they can effectively clean up all the eggs.
    2. It takes longer to drop and egg than to clean it up.

So a proposed new ideology: a) It is not important to clean any of the eggs, b) You will also not be able to prevent them from falling either, c) Drop your own eggs and watch HIM clean them up.

    Dear Piers,
Finally you had a good interview that was not politics. I can watch that all day long, all night long but I need to see something on your program other than politics or current events. Yea man, you stood up to Gloria just like you do to most of your interviews. Love you much – keep away from the everyday news we do not need another venue from you.
We are fans, loved Larry but love your much more.

Can Gloria Allred answer the question, what is removed from a women's womb in an abortion? Does Gloria Allred believe her beautful daughter or she, herself started out any differently from any other conceived child? Did the thought every cross Gloria Allred's mind that the time to think about whether or not one wants a child is prior to conception, not afterwards. I believe every conceived human being has a right to life. Thank you.

Dear Piers. Thank you for taking G Allred and her daughter to task. Obviously alot of people cant stand her because all they wanted to do was play the victim and interupt you constantly. bottom line. She gloms onto every train wreck of a woman whos in the news to get some air time and whatever loose change she can extort from some rich guy. ie Tiger Woods. Shes a disgrace to the legal profession and personifies everything thats wrong with it. I for one hope she drops out of sight never to be heard from again. We should only be so lucky!

Self Rightous Gloria: Get your facts straight. Yes, all the republican canidates are against gay marriage and most support civil unions but that is the same position as our President, Mr Obama. He states his position is "evolving" but it remains against gay marriage. In 2008, both Hillary Clinton and Barrak Obama took the same positon against gay marriage. Also Gloria,as a feminist, why would you go on the show of host that makes bigoted comments about women? His latest rant, during Super Bowl weekend ,comparing Madonna's body parts to a man were vulgar and offensive.

Thank you so much for your response, I have never liked Lisa Bloom. I don't like her voice and response to Piers Morgan's questions. She is filled with ego-responses. It's it that typical NY accent that I'm disappointed. She seems to be a representative of the wonderful people of NY. I was living in NY as a Flight Attendant for AA when 911 happened.

Fox new is my favorite. She does not have an attractive news-worthy voice, nor do I agree with her opinions.

I'm sad to think that she anyway represents the wonderful people of NY.

Thank you very much. I was an AA F/A Attendant as well – based out of JFK. I lived in NY as well during 911. Maybe we might know each other? I was in LHR during 911 because of the closed air space for a week.

I've flown for 18 years. That doesn't matter, but I'm wondering if we flew together??? But you know how seniority goes. We all kinda fly together unless someone is sick or something.

        Please let me know!!

        Thank you so much!!!!

Not religious at all but I have to say that Gloria Allred has got to be one of the most UN-appealing women in America today. I wish she would just shut up with all her male hatred. This woman has a serious problem!

I definately believe in equality but this has to mean in every aspect I am a single father and have been for 11 years because my ex-wife decided that meth and a life of crime where far more important than her three beautiful children 2 of wich where mine and hers and one that she had before are marriage that I was very happy to raise and love more than anything in the world I had custody of her for nine years when her mother decided she was ready to be a mother and the courts ripped her from a loving home and I have been unable to see her in 2 years not to mention my brother was $10000 dollars behind because he didn't finish high school the economy is bad and it is hard for him to find a job not that he shouldn't be punished his kids need support he lost his license and spent three days in jail my ex-wife is over $15000 dollars behind her and her husband own there own buisness and when I call O.R.S the first thing said to me is how much do you owe sir and when can we expect a payment and after 10 minutes they realize she owes and say sorry sir nothing we can do about that we have a large backlog if you want equality lets have equality

Piers really came across as a moralist and very much on the defensive.
It surely is hard to fill Larry's shoes,- he was so great at never taking sides and never spouting his own opinions,- he was a great interviewer, which one cannot say about this opinionated Brit!
Can't we find better than this within our own country?

Wow, finally someone else who shares my opinion of Piers Morgan. He needs to go. I have tried to watch him because he has great guest, but my problem with him is that he asks a good question and then never lets his guest answer. He starts spouting off his opinion and what he wants the guest to say and if they don't fall in line with him, he just keeps on until I have to change channels.

    Piers,
I really sympathized with you during the G. Allred interview. I thought you were trying to get her to answer the question "Who WON'T you represent", but she wouldn't answer. Although what she SAYS is easy to agree with, what she DOES is not, at least in my opinion. She sure is an unrelenting, loudspoken, pushy, 'something-something'! I think you did a good job trying to break through.

Piers is a crappy journalist, period. CNN probably does a better job at being neutral than many other networks but Piers does not. He pontificates and interrupts his guests. You might get to finish an explanation if he agrees with your point, but will likely get interrupted and lectured if he doesn't.
