Aurora theater shooting victim Jamie Rohrs, thinking of his girlfriend, and their children: "Please let them get out alive"
In the wake of Friday morning's deadly shooting at an Aurora, CO movie theater, "Piers Morgan Tonight" dedicated it's entire episode to a live broadcast featuring the latest details, as survivors offered perspective and insight from the harrowing ordeal.
Joining Piers Morgan live, parents Patricia Legarreta and Jamie Rohrs spoke of escaping from the cinema with their four-year-old daughter and four-month-old son, as shooter James Holmes opened fire.
Reliving the terrifying event, Rohrs recounted the frantic moments:
"I find myself standing... my son is on the floor... and I lose him," recalled a distraught Rohrs, who had been separated from Legarreta and their children. "Please let them get out alive."
Although Lagarretta was shot, her injuries were not fatal, and the children were unharmed.
Later in day, reunited with his family, and less than 24 hours removed from the life-altering episode, Rohrs created even more drama:
"He just looked at me and he said 'I know this isn't the time or place,'" revealed Legarreta, "'but will you marry me?' And I said 'yes.'"

You need to read some other interviews of this coward. He set the baby on the floor because he was crying and he was afraid the crying would attract the shooter's attention and get himself shot. He jumped off the balcony, abandoning his 2 young children and girlfriend, he GOT IN HIS VEHICLE AND DROVE AWAY. She reached him on a cell phone and he came back to pick them up. COWARD, and she needs to COMPLETELY rethink her decision to marry him.
In addition, another young man saw her with his 2 kids and he got shot in the thigh laying over them and trying to protect them. She doesn't mention his herioc actions!! I unfortunately forget this young man's name, but it needs to be published and praised, while Rohrs actions need to be criticized!
Jarell Brooks, 19, is the name of the young African-American man who got shot while protecting this woman and her children.

CNN should be vilified as much as Jaime Rohrs – both are cowards. The mother, Patricia, should be ashamed for not acknowledging that someone OTHER than her boyfriend tried to protect her and her kids. Patricia & Jaime are a match made in heaven. God Bless their kids....

I have watched and read NUMEROUS interviews of this couple and NOT ONE TIME does she mention Mr. Brooks or what HE did to save her and her children. In fact, we would know nothing of it if someone hadn't witnessed it and mentioned it to another interviewer who then went over and asked Mr. Brooks about it. It was ONLY THEN that he even told about it. (And yes, he had been interviewed previously and never even mentioned it! Then, the interviewer who found out, went to confirm with the "lady" about what happened and to get her name. ONLY THEN did SHE mention it. And WORSE THAN THAT, she gave her cowardly boyfriend all the credit.
I have now made it my personal mission to go to EVERY SINGLE ONE of their interview page online and list what REALLY happened. If possible, I am also going to try to contact the errant reporters, since I am sure they will want to correct the lies in their stories. I plan to do this no matter HOW long it takes, whether days, weeks or months. (After all, I am disabled and in bed all day anyway. I would love to do something for someone else while I am laying in bed. (Wait, a minute....that last sentence came out wrong! LOL!) But anyway, you know what I mean, and I am glad I can do ths kindness for Mr. Brooks, the REAL HERO!
One last thing.....if someone legit posts an account for this guy like they did for the bus moniter, I for one will be glad to contribute to show this man that there are other good people in the world.
Why did you need to put that Jarell Brooks is African America? Either way he is a HERO, while the dad of the two kids is disgrace to what a real father should have done, which is stay at his childrens' and girlfriend's side and protect them! What a selfish individual. Thanks dad!
I have seen this guy discussing his escape on numerous broadcasts. Maybe he feels the need to defend his "man card" because he realizes how cowardly he acted–and how his actions totally defy the instincts of most parents and someone who supposedly loves another. I couldn't believe it when I heard about Jarrell Brooks and how he–a complete stranger–risked his life and took a bullet for this family (or what was left of the family after the sperm donor left them behind). They never even mentioned Jarell Brooks! This has to be rectified immediately. Thank you, amylynnmilam and others, for your crusade to spread the word! 🙂
I see some are mentioning or asking why did you have to say that he's African American, but I know why you did. The media always shows the negative side of African Americans when something bad happens but, as in this case, unless you saw him, you might not know that he's black. It's just just a confirmation that yes that are great black people in this country, not just the negative ones you see on tv all of the time.

Meme, it is as you say. I mentioned it because the media seems quick to say bad about minorities, while they coddle caucasians (I am white, female, North American caucasian, university educated). Look at this particular criminal: They are saying he was in med school, he had honors, etc, etc, whereas had the criminal been a minority they would have said, "we haven't determined if this is gang or drug related yet, but we're looking into it!!"
So that is why I mentioned his race along with his positive action. Too few people write about the positive accomplishments of minorities, and are all to eager to write negatives about minorities. I choose to be positive.

I like how you are looking for possible racism in the media with this situation when it may not even be there. It seems to me you like to stir the pot when it does not need to be, or atleast not in the situation. Who cares that you a North American white female who is college educated. What does that have to do with anything? Is it to let others know that you are white and that are aware of biases in the media and society in general at times with minority populations? I used to have nightmares when I was pregnant about "what if this" and "what if that" ..Would I think to protect my child. Thank God it is Instinct in common decent people.

I don't believe that the 4 year old is the daughter of Jamie Rohrs. The first time he refers to her in this interview (prior to where this clip begins), he refers to her as "our stepdaughter".
Thank you for expressing my dismay in listening to the Piers Morgan interview. What a coward! His girl w/ a gunshot wound – gets BOTH kids and makes it out alive while the dad left them, got in his truck and drove to the mall. What the what?!!! At first I thought he was saying he got out with the baby then when I realized he left the baby as well as his daughter and mother of his children. I told my husband if he did this I would divorce his butt and he would never see the children again. As far as I see it a judge should rule this man as a unfit parent. What a selfish act!! And then drove away and hoped from the safety of his vehicle that they were ok..what a great guy!! I think he proposed all of a sudden to draw attention away from the terrible truths of what he had done. What a loser. Other victims had the frame of mind to shield their loved ones, and they were much closer to the gas, at the front of the theater. I am flabbergasted at the lack of followup by anyone,. With so many legitimate heroes in civilian and uniformed roles, how can one person be so gutless and not be called out,much less continue to be booked on different shows? You could tell the woman was furious as she listened, her throat and neck was getting red and her face was frozen, I hope she realizes that seething hatred she felt Friday night is only going to grow. That young man is without a doubt the most disgusting mess of human kind I have ever seen, and now to find someone else actually was a hero and helped is all the more distasteful. Please Piers address this again via followup.. Perhaps that type of fight or flight study can be studied by someone studying neuroscience on government time in the future. Would everyone contact the Aurora police business number and request a full investigation. Make a request that these two imbeciles loose their parental rights and these children are freed for adoption to parents who will honor and protect them. For those of you who are better qualified than I on the internet, please contact all the major television stations, Pier Morgan, Nancy Grace, The View, Ellen DeGeneress and request they honor the young man who protected these childrens when the father lost a 4 mo. old and left the scene prepared to hear the worse.. Lastly, contact the Aurora City Governing Office and request they honor this young man with a key to the city. Let's shame this coward's family. I'm sure his parents are proud they raised a self serving individual.

Thank you Jayna for your post! I've seen and read so many articles about this couple and they just sicken me! Mr. Brooks is the REAL HERO of this story, not these two people, especially the boyfriend who left his 4 month old baby on a dirty theater floor to die! A stranger had more concern for these children than the sperm donor (yes, he's not a father, a father would not have abandoned his child). So his return was a cowardly act too, as he didn't go back on his own once he came to his senses, but had to wait for an "all clear" from her before he went back to "save" them.
I'm differ with your opinion of having young children there, but I was raised going to drive-ins in my p.j.'s, and my kids are too. If my kids are not asleep by the 2nd feature and it isn't kid-friendly, we leave. The 4 year old was already asleep, the baby was asleep before the gunfire, and I don't see a problem with them there as the kids were not watching the movie, and they weren't being kept awake. I would hope that if they did awaken or become disruptive that Mom and Dad would have left (as I would have).

Back to Piers, this reminds me of some of the misguided focus Larry King had on a few individuals in the days immediately following 9/11. I'm still carrying pain from that – Piers I expect more from you. It was painful to watch the interview with this couple, of course because of the context, but really Piers, because of the clear disrespect you paid to the hero in this story – Patricia. and maybe this other person who helped her.
Um...no! The "real hero" is NOT Patricia! She has consistanty lied in every interview she has given to "save face" for her boyfriend. I would hope Child Protective Services would investigate this couple. Parents are charged with child neglect for leaving their kids in cars during the heat. If this moron's actions (putting the 4 month old on the floor to be trampled to death) don't prompt an investigation, then God help these kids. I am from Colorado and have seen a few interviews from this couple on local media. I just feel like their story keeps changing. I don't know how everybody else feels but are those tears real?

Please, after listening to his story, which the entire time sounded like he was trying to convince himself of his concern for you, I sincerely hope you decide not to marry him. He abandoned you and more importantly, he abandoned his own child. No parent in his right mind would have put the baby on the floor, the child could have easily of been trampled on. I also find it odd he was 'looking all around for you' and yet thru all that smoke you managed to save yourself and Both your children while being shot in the leg. There is nothing wrong with someone getting out when they have a chance, but they also have to take care of their responsibilities. He had a 4 month old baby with him. This child was totally dependant on his mother and father to take care of him. The baby couldn't walk. He couldn't crawl. He couldn't call to someone and say, "Hey, my Dad is a coward and abandoned me here, could ya help me please?"
The father sat the baby down and saved his own butt, and abandoned his family. And drove away. Then he went on national tv and told us all what a coward he is.
I couldn't agree with you more! Oh, and one more thing... the Dad said in this interview or a different one that he knew they wouldn't shoot a baby. Well, the shooter DID shoot a baby at point blank range IN THE HEAD! But, miraculously, the baby had survived....so far. However the baby is in the ICU and it doesnt look good. EVen IF the baby survives, it is likely to be brain damaged it's whole life. So, yeah, THAT theory of his sure worked out!

Ok...digging deep. No, still deciding to judge him on his actions. The only solace I take is in knowing a "man" like him is reading every word of this. So perhaps he should have considered how decent people would perceive his actions before going to the media. I think he will find his 15 minutes less enjoyable than first thought. And it is really easy to say someone has made all of the wrong choices while sitting safely at your home computer. This interview was less then 24 hours after the shooting. I personally don't think I have the right to judge his actions, when I have no idea what surviving such a horrible ordeal is like.
People's actions speak directly to their character. That is how everyone will be ultimately judged. If he didn't want the attention I would suggest he not put his ridiculous account of "bravery" on television. Many people acted nobly in the face of the same danger....for strangers....not even for their own children. Fear can be a powerful emotion, but it also can be controlled. This is most apparent when other people are relying on you for help, especially your children who are helpless. In a situation such as this the fear for your life is typically suppressed as you're focused on the safety of others. It is abundantly clear that this guy is lacking the ability to act selflessly for his children, something that most parents possess. So he needs to step away from the cameras and media, keep his mouth shut and let the victims of this tragedy be recognized.

I don't care how afraid you are, a parent DOES NOT abandon his or her child in the face of danger! In fact, I suspect, in normal people, there is some innate drive which triggers a protective mode in parents whose children are in danger. While I understand that no-one knows how they will act (coward or hero) in an emergency until tested, I do not understand how, in this interview, both parents fail to mention the heroic behavior of the fellow movie goer, Jarell Brooks, who didn't walk/run away but stopped to protect their two children (both baby and 4 year old), taking a bullet for them. One thing this can show all americans regardless of the color of some ones skin, or nationality, we all do better together than apart. I was happy to see that many people of different races helping out each other regardless of the color of ones skin. There were a number of African American men, true men that helped out and took a bullet for people of another race. I'm not trying to turn anything "racial" but the next time you look at a Black man just because he is black remember this color could save your life one day whether it be military, police, fireman, medical etc.... and vice versa May we all learn a valiable lesson from this may we all love one another regardless of race, nationality, or color.
In the first interview of Rohrs, I think by Channel 4, on the day of the shooting, Rohrs talks only about how he was so afraid for himself. He was worried HE was going to get shot. I wish someone had a copy of that interview to post online. He says nothing about being afraid for his family, only himself.
