Piers Morgan on gun control: "I'll tell you the day to debate it, it would have been yesterday, to prevent this from happening"
On the heels of the deadly Aurora, CO movie theater shooting which claimed the lives of 12 people and injured 58 others, on Friday "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomed a host of guests to share their insights and perspectives on the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Joining the program live from Denver, law professor David Kopel suggested more attention be paid to the victims, rather than advancing the story towards a debate on gun control:
"Honestly Piers, I think this is the wrong night to be doing this and I really wish you'd waited to have this segment until after the funerals," he told the host.
Challenging Kopel's position, Piers Morgan explained his stance:
"A lot of people have said that today, a lot of people who don't want strengthening of gun control, have said 'This is not the day to debate it.' I'll tell you the day to debate it, it would have been yesterday, to prevent this from happening," he declared. "So don't patronize me, about when we should be talking about the gun control debate."

i have to agree with every word you said and every word ken worrell replied to, gun control is not the answer. legally armed citizens doing what is right with the guns they own is the answer, and a message to ken i would be proud to sit next to a legally armed citizen in a movie theatre while he shoots dead a man trying to slaughter many people i a movie theatre.

Give credit where credit is due, or are you afraid to in case people's eyes are opened and the present gun laws run the risk of being reformed? I agree with everything you are saying, but when they talk about gun control they mostly talk about criminals getting access to guns. This situation the adult was not a criminal but an average American, but a very smart adult. Something like this we can not predict or try to stop. So why should we push something on everyone, where this doesn't happen everyday. I think its sad that in America we freak out over a dozen people where like you stated drunk drivers are killing more nightly then that. When I first started to watch this news event earlier today I was waiting for them to start arguing about the gun control law. Then to my amazement here it is. They ran out of news worthy information so there trying to fill air time with something to bring attention to their viewers, but I rather watch this channel over fox were they don't even fact find anything before they film it. As society or government we cannot stop people from doing inhumane acts.

This act was horrendous, to manipulate it into political use is terrible. Even Obama has the decency to avoid politics right now. Why not ban body armor instead, that way then if someone else had a gun in the theater they could have shot the gunman. Why not go even further and ban comic books.... Where does it end?

There is a very clear difference between alcohol, vehicles and guns. The guns used in this tragedy were designed for one purpose and one purpose only; to kill. The trite "guns don't kill people" excuse is right up there with "I was just obeying orders" for lame excuses of all time.
That is just a ridiculous argument. Yes drunk driving is a problem, and that's why there are very strict laws in every state that try to curtail it. If there were no laws against drunk driving and people were marketing ways of getting more alcohol in people's system while driving, then you would make a great point. The same way that people need a driver's license, they should have to pass a test every few years if they want to own a gun. It is just common sense. In states with tougher restrictions on availability and ownership, there is dramatically less gun violence. It's not rocket science. - In fact, most people that want to own guns, are probably the people that have no business owning a gun.

In case you missed it, this is a story about gun control, not drunk driving. Both gunmen and drunk drivers kill people all the time, but this is a story about gun control. Both issues should be discussed, but this particular program focuses on gun control. If you are proposing tougher laws to prevent DUI deaths (longer sentences, lowered blood-alcohol limits), do it somewhere else. It's entirely fair to bring up the question of whether or not our guns laws are appropriate as-is, or should be changed. The key change should be the prohibition of assault weapons. Granted, a single-shot weapon can kill people. But it's fair less likely to kill as many people as an assault weapon. That would (and has, when the Brady bill originally prohibited assault weapons) make a difference in these kinds of mass shootings.

Piers Morgan is a vile man. Who is tied up with the phone hacking scandal in over here. He was Editor of the News of the World (a paper that had to close because of all the hacking they did)
For those who don't know, the phone hacking scandal is where journalists at Mr Morgan former newspaper hacked in to peoples telephones to obtain news stories. Some of the victims of this were Millie Dowler family. Millie Dowler was a school girl who was abducted and murdered, but the police thought she was still alive because the 'journalists' were checking and deleting messages on her voicemail.
So you can keep the vile man.

Do you support security screening in airports? If yes, Why? Why can't you extend the same level of screening to gun ownership?

As expected, there's a lot of NRA bashing and comments blaming second amendment advocates for this sad event; many of them quite personal. This is understandable of course. Whenever a tragedy like this occurs it's human nature to seek out something or someone to blame.
Emotion clouds rational thinking and a diverts the blame away from the individual who committed the crime, instead focusing on the instruments used to commit the crime. No matter what your beliefs are regarding the second amendment, or the reasons that violent senseless events like this happen, a rational and unemotional assessment of "why" this happened is very difficult.
Today, we live in the information age, when tragic events like this happen we (anyone with access to media outlets) learn immediately about the event and this leads one to believe that violence and murders like this are happening more and more...........when in fact the opposite is true. I don't have time to post references here, but anyone with a decent education, and access to unbiased research on the matter (not necessarily the Internet), and a few hours of time, can look at the facts which show that, over time, the incidents of violent crime, and more specifically murder, are declining on a per capita basis. This doesn't mean much when a tragic event like this occurs, and is no comfort to people who just lost loved ones to the actions of a deranged individual like Holmes. But, it should make others think very hard before they lash out the NRA and advocates of the second amendment.
A little more research on the matter will also show that nations who lobby their government to "do something" usually end up losing freedoms and when the freedoms they lose are related to the disarmament of the population it usually backfires (increase in crime, increase in loss of life). This is counter-intuitive, however this is what the facts show. Anti-gunners can't get past their emotional beliefs even when data and facts suggest otherwise. This is sad, and it really says a lot about their critical thinking ability.
I for one and very thankful for what the NRA has done with regard to second amendment advocacy and would hate to see irrational and emotional knee jerk reaction limit the freedoms that American's enjoy any more than they already have.

I'm more concerned about the fact that small children were shot when they should of been at home in bed. I watched Piers interview a couple today that had their 4 year old and a 9 month old in the theatre with them. What were children under the age of 13 doing at a Midnight screening in the first place?! We will never be able to regulate and control guns, but we can control stupidity of parents by not allowing small children to be at inappropriate places they should never be at in the first place. I couldn't believe Piers didn't ask them why their children were at a Midnight screening of a PG 13 movie... that would of been my first question as soon as I hear it come out of the Mother's mouth?! These babies would still be alive if theatres were stricter on rating laws.

It had no effect on the border shooting. What did, was an inexcusablle abuse of power by Eric Holder and the Obama administration, who authorized these arms sales. I don't understand this blind view on gun control that so many are pushing. If we made ALL guns illegal, what would it accomplish? Isn't murder already illegal? How about drugs? Yet, murders still happen everyday and drugs are everywhere. So, such a ban would only prevent "law-abiding" citizens from carrying weapons. It would not affect the criminals very much at all. If they can easily get illegal drugs now, they would get illegal guns then. The only difference is, they wouldn't have to give any thought at all to the possibility of there being a gun-owner at that home they are thinking about invading. Sounds like a gun ban would be a wonderful development, IF you are meaning to live the criminal life anyway, it would just make it easier for you. It's very similar to a saying I have often heard, "Locks are to keep the honest people out, they don't keep criminals out." Same here, laws only restrict those who would abide by them in the first place, not criminals. However, I don't expect those blinded by tunnel vision and oblivious to the REAL world to understand at all.

Strange that meth, cocaine, and lots of other things which are illegal don't seem to stop criminals from obtaining them. After all, there was a "gun free zone" sign posted on that theater. Didn't seem to stop this from happening. And Piers should just move back to England where they have strict gun control and people still get murdered every day. Thank you Piers! We must ask the presidential candidates where do they stand on gun control. If they want to lead they have to face tough choices and gun control is a particular difficult one. Piers: make sure you become a moderator on at least one of the many presidential debates that will be coming and force the issue. How come we defend so vigorously the right to bear arms (9 out of 10 americans own a gun) yet we fight equally vigorously the right for every american to have access to affordable health care?

Since Piers is from England and has no memory of WW2 . They had very strict gun laws during this time and became very scared of being taken over by Germany. I was very disappointed at the way Piers handled the situation again. What Mr. Kopel was trying to explain (if Mr. Pier's would pay attention) that friday was not the night to resolve gun control. This was an absolutely abhorrent time to talk about one's self interests. Does anyone honestly believe that getting rid of guns is the solution? Please think for goodness sakes. My solution to gun control is to target the NRA. Ask who are the top people in this organization? Who are the people who payoff and control the corrupt politicians on both sides who really don't care about us as people– they only care about being reelected getting payoff money from the NRA and staying in power plain and simple. Should we find out who the major NRA executives are and sit out in front of their homes in protest? Should we march in front of their corporate headquarters? Should we go online and see what politicians are getting major contributions from the NRA?

I just watched Piers Morgan interviewing the author of More Guns, Less Crime, John Lott about gun control today 24 July. Piers would rant on and on, ask a question, but not let Lott answer, or if Piers did not like the answer, call Lott's response stupid, or, not answering the question. I'm surprised Lott did not walk out. I am astounded that CNN continues to allow Piers Morgan to be on air in the guise of journalism, when anything that doesn't agree with Piers' prejudices and biases is named inconsequential. Terminate Morgan, his show is not journalism, it smacks of a one-sided, narrow point of view that has nothing of value to give to the national debate. I am a gun owner, and ridicule the thought that police authority can protect the individual. The Supreme Court has ruled that police do not have the responsibility to protect the individual, only the community at large. Well, who makes up the community? And, as we all know, the police arrive on scene to do the investigative work, AFTER THE MAYHEM HAS ENSUED and bodies are lying on the ground. Small comfort when the shooting is over. It is each individual's responsibility to protect him/herself and their loved ones. I don't watch Piers Morgan because, as Larry above said, "Why do you even have guest that disagree with you. As far as guns are concerned, any establishment that does not allow concealed carry by licensed citizens, and has an event occur, such as the Aurora theater shooting, is limiting the citizen's right to protect him/herself, and should be made to pay in a class action lawsuit. Had there been someone in the theater with a concealed gun, maybe, just maybe, 12 people would not have died, and 58 would not have been wounded, with several still on the critical list. We have too many gun-free zones like schools, hospitals, theaters, malls. Guess what? These places are where the shootings occur because there are no guns there besides what the criminals bring to promote mayhem and death. Don't be a sheeple, be the sheep dog who fights off the wolf.

I love how Piers decided to call it an assault rifle, immediately having everyone think it was a fully automatic weapon that this person got a hold of. They need to do their research, because unless you make an ILLEGAL modification to one of those weapons, they cannot be fully automatic. Not to mention he quoted the MAXIMUM firing rate of the weapon which is determined in a laboratory under NOT REAL WORLD conditions. The sustained fire rate is a more accurate depiction of the weapon's capabilities. He said the guy fired of 50-60 rounds in a minute; I know guys that can do that too... with handguns... and multiple reloads.
The thing that people don't realize is that first, current laws should be enforced. Second, that to outlaw guns means only outlaws will have guns. This guy did this in a "Gun-Free Zone." HELLO!!!!! Where better to go if you don't want to get shot back at?!? The fact that he had the guns isn't the issue, the issue is that no one saw any warning signs that this person was unstable. If you start thinking of guns as tools, instead of as weapons of destruction, the problem becomes clear, that people are the problem, not the guns.
Violence is part of human society. The Collosium in Rome is a testament to that fact. But the thing about all of this is that we need to be more worried about the grieving process, about taking care of those left behind, and those who were hurt by this tragedy. If people want this sort of thing to stop, then it is a matter of people individually stepping up, being courageous, and taking action. If you truly believe that guns are the cause of this, then have some courage and do something about it. Don't sit on a blog or news site and hide behind the anonymity of a computer screen. Get out into your community and do something. Likewise, if you don't think guns are the problem, then take a stand and focus on what is the problem. Then do something about it.

With all due respect, to my knowledge there were NO automatic weapons at the shooting unless they were brought by the police who responded. Nor were there any "assault rifles." But there was one desperately sick man who had fooled everyone into believing he was a sane, well-adjusted, law-abiding citizen. Automatic weapons can fire multiple rounds with a single pull of the trigger. "Assault" rifles are used by the military because they have that capability, and because they are rugged and take tons of abuse without failing. Looking like a military weapon does not MAKE it a military weapon. I can make a Volkswagon LOOK like a Lamborgini, but that doesn't MAKE it so. If you take the emotion out of this incident it boils down to one man losing his ability to determine fact from fiction, reality from illusion, and cognizance from delusion.

The 'right time' to discuss gun control is a legitimate debate. While the professor makes a valid point about the emotion of the moment, people rarely take decisive and meaningful actions on difficult challenges without a strong emotional impetus. The argument can be made that if we wait too long, once the emotional intensity has dissipated, people will go back to their lives, Tweeting and posting all important details on their Facebook pages.
With respect to the gun control debate, as you informed us, this individual was able to legally purchase enough firepower and ammunition to single-handedly kill hundreds or even thousands, but I can't go to a pharmacy and buy more than 15 tablets of my allergy medication in one day or 30 tablets in a month, and I have to wait within 1 day of running out at the end of each month. In what universe does that make any sense?

If we are going to ban guns based on one incident, we need to ban automobiles first. The are about 40,000 fatal car crashes in the United States each year. You want to ban guns over 12 people being killed and 50 being injured, but they are approximately 144 fatal car crashes each week! We need to ban alcohol too, since over half of car accidents involve it. Banning guns will only affect the people that are law abiding citizens. Criminals will not surrender their guns to the police if a new gun ban is put in place. Violent crime is at near record levels in Chicago and they have the most restrictive gun laws in the country. The problem is the people who use them improperly, just as using any other device improperly is a problem; for example, the person who decides to drive their car into the middle of a crowd. The main gun control problem in Aurora was that there weren't a bunch of folks that were armed with concealed weapons to put a stop to this nut case quickly and efficiently when he opened fire.

I agree, it would be nice to put a stop to all of this by banning guns, but it won't. As stated a couple of message above and as Hooter was commenting on when he mentioned the IRA, the guns aren't the problem. If these nut cases don't use guns, they'll just use something else. In Britain, which is where Mr. Morgan is from, the result was that the nut cases started using bombs. If you think Aurora was bad, you haven't seen anything yet. Just wait until the first bomb placed inside a bag full of nails goes off in a crowd. Also, no one has time to duck and try to get away from the bomb. When it goes off, there's no warning. There's no fighting back to try to defend yourself. It's all done in a fraction of a second with damage and injuries that will make Aurora look tame.

I lived in Seattle for years and during the horrific Wah Mee Masacre 13 people were killed. When will America wake up about gun control! Too many profit from it and Shame on the NRA!!! Tragedy for debate? Sad, but expected. Gun Control does not reduce violent crime – Australia has already proven that, they banned small firearms and semi automatics, and violent crime exploded. We have the lowest violent crime rate in decades because people are armed, and educated, and criminals are deterred by that. This young man could of hurt more people driving his car through the local farmer's market, than he did here. The greatest atrocity in this situation is that, with close to 300 hundred people in that theatre, not one person did anything to stop him. One armed law abiding citizen could have stopped this man. 911 takes on average 23 minutes, you cannot count on the police to save you, or your loved ones.
People have to stop being sheep, and start being sheepdogs, and have the courage to defend others.

Two problems about Piers tonight. First it is not really gun control, but bullet control. Even if the shooter had only one gun, he still had many bullets. Unless you are hit on the head with a gun, it won't kill unless you have a bullet. The fact the shooter had 6000 rounds is the problem. Second, the treatment of the Denver University law professor was uncalled for. He is a MEMBER of the community that just had the tragedy. Ten years ago we had a bad tragedy here in Rhode Island, and I can not fathom questions like his pressing fire safety on the same day of the tragity. It is a new world now. I assume that the credit card companies are all completely automated. If someone pulled that slip, it would show thousands of rounds of ammo, weapons, body armor and etc. It is hard to decide where privacy ends and safety begins. If my yahoo account can start advertising movies just because I email someone about something in my "Music in Films" class or the grocery store can print me coupons on the back of my receipt based on what I just purchased, seems like the credit card companies could flag something that shows an unusually large amount of purchases relating to killing people. Think about it: that's THREE HUNDRED 10-bullet magazines for the Glock, and THIRTY of the now-famous 100-round "drum magazines" for the AR-15. Over 200 lbs of ammo alone, not counting the mags themselves. Holmes was probably carrying no more than 200-300 rounds, which makes most of Morgan's argument tonight totally baseless.

Stricter gun regulations will not prevent this from happening. As a matter of fact, the theater had signs posted, NO GUNS. Yes, that's right, this happened in a GUN FREE ZONE. Just more proof that more laws are not going to prevent things like this from happening. He could have just as easily made a bomb.

30 wanna be cops shooting concealed weapons in the theater possibly could have led to more people dying. Crossfire!!!!!! I do get the point that if at least one person had a gun and got the drop on this guy, it would have saved lives. I just think that law enforcement has a role although they can't be everywhere all the time.
I'll agree that crossfire has to be taken into account, but let's look at what happened. The gunman opened fire and eveyone hit the deck or ran for the door. They would not have been running towards the gunman. The 30 folks you mention would have all been shooting at the gunman. Given the above scenario, it should have been a mostly clear shot. Yes, a couple of folks may have been hit in crossfire, but the carnage this gunman could have caused with what he had could also have easily been much worse than it was. Imagine what would have happened if, after his initial shooting, he walked up the isle and started shooting everyone on the floor. The quicker the gunman is taken out, the better for everyone.
I'm not saying that shooting back is a good situation. The whole situation is bad. The job becomes how to minimize the bad situation and the way to minimize it is to stop the gunman as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Let's all stop the silly unthoughtful rhetoric. If you don't think we as a people in America can't do anything about gun control than you are part of the problem. Hate and name calling like those in these posts put the gun in that man's hands. Money rules America. Put pressure on the pro gun lobbyists. No one needs an assault rifle to hunt. No one needs the amount of ammunition he had. We can demand background checks and references. Punish stores and gun shows that do not comply. Put them out of business. It is not just up to the politicians. Relatives and friends know who has the weapons, turn them in. You or your loved ones could be next. Did you ever think of that. He didn't buy these weapons at a gun show. He bought them at Gander Mountain and Bass Pro Shops. He PASSED the mandatory background check. The stores did everything by the book. The amount of ammo was irrelevant, as he likely fired no more than 200-300 rounds. Every single one of your "proposals" would have done nothing at all to prevent this tragedy.

Dear Piers. My respect for you grows all the time. Your reaction to David Kopel was spot on.
Since nothing has been done about gun control already, the time to do something about assault weapons, and clips that hold more bullets than any civilian could possibly need is now. It takes a maniac to do something like this but, without a doubt, there would be many more survivors if the perpetrator didn't have an automatic weapon that held 100 rounds that enabled him to get fifty rounds off in a minutes time. I'm okay with the second amendment. People do and should maintain the right to bear arms. I have a problem with civilians being armed to the teeth.

He could have used heavier than air inert gas and just opened the valves and suffocated everyone, and they might not even notice. Yeah, the Philippines outlawed guns so something like 80% of the deaths come at the end of a knife. We're just trying to "childproof" this country. We are not focusing on the correct problem at hand. I can't comment on gun control, because we own guns; so I would be a hypocrit to want them banned. However I do believe certain guns need to be banned from public use. I live on a farm, so we need shotguns/ rifles for livestock protection and for hunting food...we don't need semi-automatic, automatic or even handguns for that. Also, here in Canada, we just got rid of our long gun registry, which only hurted hunters/farmers (legal gun users.) "Joe Criminal" isn't going to register his illegal gun, so it was a total waste of money and resources. I do know of many Americans who have come to Canada; and, who have taken their handguns with them, and, had them taken away at the border. Look we aren't a bunch of liberals here opposed to owning guns; but, we don't carry them around like cowboys! No offence to our American neighbors; but, through the media, you are portrayed badly to the outside world. For example, if I had watched "the Kardashians", I would get the impression rich people like them were spoiled and frivolous. If I watched Jersey Shore, I would think you all get drunk and sleep around. If I watched Doomsday Preppers I would get the impression you were paranoid and wacko. He did not come there to die. He came to murder. Why is it that there is no system to red flag someone buying military style weapons and armor? I am sure, as the days go by, that we will hear about people who recognized that this young man was a danger and that they were either in denial of how dangerous he is or they were ignored. It is the responsibility of the government to protect its people from this kind of incident. Instead, it stands back and allows full acess to weapons etc. that should only be equiping police forces and armys.

He was wearing a tactical bullet "resistant" vest which means if you had a .357 or more, you probably would have dropped the guy and given people enough time to wrestle his weapons away with one shot. If you had a FN Five-Seven with you, you could have killed him as they are able to penetrate vests.

These things just like guns are not in and of themselves a danger to the public yet they can be used that way, so do we have the Government regulate any and all items that could be used in any way to harm the public? How is this a gun problem? This is a problem with the morals, ethics, decency, and integrity of humanity. Is it because it is so much easier to blame an object that can be banned than it is to figure out why we have this erosion of society? Respect towards others and personal responsibility seem to be long gone.
My book, "The Right Thing" is a true account of living with strangers and finding that what seems from the outside to be a "normal" household can harbor those with extreme pathology – in houses that may be your neighbors. James Holms was an honor roll student, a PhD candidate. What festers and grows on the underbelly of this great nation? This man maintained a facade of normality while all the time he was a psychopath. In my work I see people with no consciences and perhaps they are the easy ones to spot, to be wary of. Those who learn how to hide their pathology are the most dangerous. I would suggest that this man has a "Be Perfect Driver" which was one of the suicide risk factors I identified in my PhD. The fact that he was withdrawing from his PhD program suggests that he lacks self esteem, doesn't believe that he's "good enough", and habors anger towards those who expect too much from him. We are all too busy with our own lives to notice when someone we are close to, or work with, starts to change the way they behave. It's easy after the fact, I know, but as citizens we need to be observant and alert someone when blantant changes in others accur, but more importantly, the authorities need to listen if someone does report possible mental instability. My heart goes out to all those affected, and let's not forget this man's mother who, if she has any self-insight, she will examine her parentlng skills and what went wrong with her Grade A student son. One day, Americans will wake up and realize that their country is just one among others in the world. Not the most wealthy, not the most technologically advanced, not the one with the strongest civil liberties. And then they might start to listen to people like Piers Morgan who point out how extremely rare shootings like this are in other civilized countries as opposed to the United States. And not just killing sprees, murders in general. Piers Morgan, born in Europe, knows this and tries to do something. That deserves respect.
You're correct. They have fewer shootings in countries with fewer guns. However, they have more knifings, bombs, strangulations, etc. Also, that number needs to be per capita. While we aren't the largest country in the world, we do have more people than a lot of the countries you're speaking of.
Something that's not mentioned here is the real cause of this. The rage in the person. The item he used is irrelevant. If the guns weren't available he would have used bombs or driven over the crowd standing in line for tickets. So, why is there so much rage in this country? One possible answer here is diet. Most of the world actually eats better than we do (I said "better" not "more"). It has been shown that lack of proper nutrision and a high sugar diet can cause this. No, not all people are affected the same, some just get fat, and some don't seem to be bothered by it at all. That doesn't mean it isn't happening. Also, I do not mean to imply that this is the whole answer, it's not, but it may be worth looking at. I also don't think the "food police" as NYC is trying to propose is the answer.
No matter what is done, nothing will ever stop all of this. There will always be someone, who for some unknown reason, flips out and does something like this using whatever is at their disposal.
First my thoughts and prayers go out to the familys and the victims. D. Kopel is an idiot. Piers was brilliant. Have a gun I say....not assault rifles or worse...but control the owners 2ce a year with checks and balances about how the guns are kept and used. That will build a database that is worth checking. Buy it online....fine....but you have to pick it up at the local police station and register for it and where you got it from there before taking it home.The policing of the guns is the biggest problem. People hunt in England and in Austria and keep guns....even collectors....but the registration is just the beginning....regular surprise visits to check how the guns are kept and used and owners must take shooting ability tests. What a shame that nobody in the theater was trained and equipped to be aware of their surroundings and stop the perpetrator's rampage. Does no one remember the sentiment of a different victim of a different attack at the October 16, 1991, Luby’s massacre of 24 people in Killeen, Texas, who lamented having left her pistol in her vehicle because she was “just going in for lunch”, and didn’t think she’d need it? This tragedy is not a gun rights/gun control issue. It is a mental health issue. Perhaps Piers Hearst should stop jerking his knees over sensational events and cover the far greater tragedy of abandoned mental health care in this country. If that won’t sell enough air time, then ban guns and wait for the perfectly disarmed, perfectly sane, and perfectly evil among us to switch to bombs built from grocery and hardware purchases. I am not a gun owner. Not because I don't like them, just because I don't feel a need to have them in my home. I also don't hunt. I have many friends who do but I just don't have the patience for it. With that said, I have many mixed feelings about gun control. Though I agree that there really is no need to have assault rifles and 6,000 rounds of ammunition, I don't think making guns illegal is going to solve this problem. It is also illegal to go into a movie theater and shoot people, but it didn't stop him. It is illegal to have IED's, but yet his apartment is lined with them. If someone wants to cause harm to a lot of people shortly, there are many ways to do this that don't require guns. Oklahoma city bombing? Unabomber? My point is, gun control will not stop people from doing something. Human nature is to evolve and find another way. And let's face it, laws were not going to stop this guy. He broke so many of them before he even shot a gun.....

As a service member that has shot at people (doing my job) and been shot at I can tell you it's not the guns or how they get them that are the issue, it's the individual. If a drunk driver get behind the wheel and kills someone it's not the car or the person that sold or served the alcohol's fault, but that of the driver for making that decision. You seem to get really upset and rude when Mr Kopel did not agree with you, but I can almost be 100% sure that there were some in the theater who which that they had carried on them that night, because maybe they could have exchanged gun fire and killed the guy . England recently had it's citizens in the street shooting at police and their helicopters and looting stores and the law abiding citizens could do nothing because people like Piers had taken away their guns. Im british and reading a lot of uninformed rubbish about british crime and gun control. British people hate guns because we understand that they are extremely dangerous and can be used to inflict horrendous injury on innocent people. The majority of american citizens killed by gun fire are done so not through self defence but murderous attacks by people who should not be allowed to own guns. People in Britain also believe in justice not revenge or vigilant "justice" Batman is a comic book and is not a something to which people should attempt to aspire to. The problems with letting people freely own guns are clear and evident and to deny them is just plain ignorance. Also the guy who claims people in britain have to have safe rooms because they dont have guns? Ive yet to meet anyone with a safe room and know very few people who have ever been robbed while they were i n there home. We dont need guns to protect ourselves because we know that if someone does break into our house they wont have a gun either and a baseball bat or golf club wil do just nicely. There's a difference between vigilante justice and self defense. Stopping an attack in progress is self defense. Chasing after the perpetrator, hunting them down and killing them is vigilante. Letting the police do the 2nd is justice. However, letting the police do the 2nd doesn't help the folks that could have been saved by the self defense aspect of this. The sooner you stop the perpetrator, the better for everyone. This results in fewer deaths and injuries at the time and in fewer later when he does this again before being caught.

Mental health issues and gun control issues are not mutually exclusive. Clearly many people with undiagnosed mental illnesses are walking among us, free to do whatever their deranged minds tell them. The massacre in Colorado is a case in point. There should be procedures in place so that when someone is attempting to buy huge amounts of ammunition on line or elsewhere it should be reported to the authorities. Likewise,high powered guns should not be sold to anyone until the reasons for buying the weapons ( i.e. their intended use) can be verified and until they have a mental health clearance. I know many will say these procedures would violate privacy rights but given the horror of what has just occurred in Colorado, I think public safety should trump personal privacy. Had such procedures been followed in this case, 12 people would still be alive and 58 others would not be injured.

I have watched Piers Morgan of CNN for the last couple of years. Last night I watched in amazement as his personal views on gun control over the Colorado incident and his passionate hatred for guns have clouded his ability to foster a non biased conversation on both sides of the gun control issue. Piers should resign and join the likes of Maurice Povich as he turned CNN news network into his own tabloid show. He lost it last night, and along went his credibility and neutrality as a news professional. Sadly it is time for Piers Morgan to move back to the UK where his individual liberties can be reduced and his taxes increased. Feel free to repost, or call me for an interview.

Applause for Piers for standing up to Kopal. I could not believe that he would think a discussion on new gun controls was inappropriate on the night of a massacre involving several weapons. I loved Piers' response that yesterday would have been an appropriate time for the discussion because maybe then the tragedy could not have happened. CNN reported this morning that Colorado gun laws do not even allow for a data base to be establishedd to track who is buying guns and ammunition, which guns and how much ammunition. No one but the perpetrator is to blame for his actions but the gun laws certainly made it easier for him. What is it going to take before pro gun types accept that gun laws need to be changed at a state and national level? Gingrich made the ridiculous point that gun laws don't need to change, rather we need to change the way we deal with perpetrators – i.e. shorter appeal periods, stricter sanctions, etc. This perpetrator is well aware of the consequences of mass murder whether it be life in prison or the death penalty. However he is so demented he doesn't care. Gingrich seems to assume that all perpetrators are rational and reasonable and that is so obviously not the case. Laws can be changed without interferring with the second amendment.

Nations with stringent anti-gun laws generally have substantially higher murder rates than those that do not. The study found that the nine European nations with the lowest rates of gun ownership (5,000 or fewer guns per 100,000 population) have a combined murder rate three times higher than that of the nine nations with the highest rates of gun ownership (at least 15,000 guns per 100,000 population).
For example, Norway has the highest rate of gun ownership in Western Europe, yet possesses the lowest murder rate. In contrast, Holland's murder rate is nearly the worst, despite having the lowest gun ownership rate in Western Europe. Sweden and Denmark are two more examples of nations with high murder rates but few guns. As the study's authors write in the report:
If the mantra "more guns equal more death and fewer guns equal less death" were true, broad cross-national comparisons should show that nations with higher gun ownership per capita consistently have more death. Living in Canada having grown up in Australia where we have gun control, the rest of the world is at a loss to understand why the U.S. continues to allow civilians to own (and easily obtain) assault weapons. Virginia Tech – 2007 – supposedly a "gun free" campus "protected" by strict campus gun control laws.
Norway – 2011 – Norway some of the world's strictest gun control laws.

I seldom watch Piers Morgan, but did last night. I was disappointed that Piers showed his ignorance about gun control. Yes, it is sad that 12 people died, and a young man went berserk. However, guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Said another way, enacting tougher guns laws take guns out of the hands out of law abiding citizens who wish to defend themselves from the likes of this madman in Aurora, CO. Criminals or those wishing to do shoot up people for ill intent get around gun control laws; how do you think this guy got a 100 drum cartridge?
Piers also said on the air that gun control laws should have been made "yesterday" before the worst gun massacre in US history, in referring to the tragedy in Aurora! What about Virginia Tech in 2007? And, VT had, supposedly, a "gun free" campus with lots of laws to allegedly protect its faculty and students.
What about Norway last summer?
Norway has the some of the world's strictest gun control laws. Did that stop a young man from killing 87 other young people? Norway has a population of 5 million people. So, that's like 480 people getting killed in a gun massacre in the United States; the USA is 60 times the population of Norway.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Make guns laws too strict, and more will get killed in these senseless shootings and there will be more of them; ala Virginia Tech and Norway.

I own a couple of guns and support our right to have guns. But I am against going beyond having guns for self protection. There is no reason for people to own assault rifles. We need to limit the number of rounds allowed as well as fully automated assaulted assault riffles.
Also I don't believe he did this alone. With all his planning,to booby trap his apt. etc,. why would he leave it to chance that someone would open the exit to let him the theater? That just doesn't make sense!! Who was the guy that went out that door and prop it open to take a cell call? Is he being investigated? Without him this tragedy might not have happened. Did the theater get alerted when that exit door was opened and what was their response?

Admittedly gun controls would not end all violence. However, one would think that if such an individual as this did not have ready access to obtain a semi-automatic rifle that the death toll would have been much lower. I agree to the extent of discussing the problem. The problem is: What is going on that is making more people in society these days go off the deep end. I mean, lets face it, normal people do not walk around thinking" If I walked into a theater and shot a lot of innocent people..." or "I'm going to send bombs to people at universities..." or "it would be a good idea to blow up a Federal building". These are some screwed up people, but what made them this way and how do you change the erosion of morality and personal responsibility in this country? I guess this is harder to address than trying to ban something tangible. Completely eliminating something from society is a pipe dream.
There have been some accidents in my area lately where cars full of kids all got killed because the driver was going way too fast. Should we ban fast cars? Have you ever lost someone due to a drunk driver? Maybe we should ban alcohol also. This all goes back to teaching people from a very young age personal responsibility among other things.

One only needs to examine where these incidents most commonly occur, in “Gun Free Zones.” Columbine, Virginia Tech University, The University of Texas, … the list goes on. Although the two situations were similar, the results were entirely different.

I have an opinion on this matter. First, my condolences to the victims families. Second, how about we make mass murder very unappealing to future criminals. I think that after the trial of this lunatic we set an example to everyone else that might have a crazy idea in their head to kill people. Instead of giving this lunatic a sentence of life in prison, we torture him publically. And we give a clear message, IF YOU MURDER OTHER HUMANS, YOU WILL DIE A VERY PAINFULL DEATH. That said, you do not have the right to dictate to America what we should or should not do. If you want a say in how a country takes care of it's affairs speak up in YOUR country where your opinion matters. Can you all, including Piers Morgan, calm down?! Gun control is such a hot topic. I think Piers could have waited until Wednesday or even Friday. But basically, he is right. It's his show, he is the host of it and executive producer, and he can do what the hell he wants to do during his show. Get over it, people. Too many guns on people's hands. Stricter rules need to be applied. Many companies do not do even a simple background search. Wal-Mart, for example, never does a background search. Such pinheads should be stopped from selling guns to monsters like that shooter. So, Piers might have been rude on the air yesterday, but he's right. So, get over it, people!
Wall Mart does do backgrounds, Dollar General,etc., 95% of any place that handles large amounts of money do. I never had watched this show, but as a reasonable adult I was disheartened. I felt that Mr.Morgan did not care about the victims,and this is not something to be proud of. I am proud to be an American. I truly love this country. I heard Mr.Morgan keep saying 'Modern America.' All through our history guns and gun owners were a part of our history. There is a website out there (I read it a couple of years ago) that does a mock comparison of gun shot injuries from years ago until now and it is quite interesting. The bottom line was that guns have become safer, it is the people who have not.
So the Canadians have to get their 2 cents in. The same applies to you as applies to Piers. It's not your country so BUTT OUT! Our neighrbors to the North have nothing but bad things to utter about the US until it comes to time to say the words " thanks for the work visa" There goes another job for us. How is bringing more guns into the matter going to solve anything? Simply because you outnumber the original weapon doesn't mean that: a) you wont hit someone else acidentally, even if you have the best aim in the world, and b) you wont be convicted of murder, manslaughter, attempted murder or assault?
I regularly go to a martial arts class. When we are practicing defensive tecniques with knives (Fake training ones, of course) and one of the things my Sensei's always tell the class is this:

As to those that believe that guns kill as much as cars kill, consider this. A car, a plane or another vehicle is designed as transport. It's a unintended consequence that it can kill.Most objects that can be used as a weapon have another purpose. Guns are manufactured to injure or kill.

George Zimmerman said it was God's plan to take a life. I'm wondering if he thinks this killer was part of God's plan? I am for defending yourself, but if George could control the gun, get it out of his holster and get it up to the chest of Mr. Martin, then he probably had enough control to fire the gun into his arm or shoulder, which would have diffused the situation if he was in fact in fear of his life. Where I'm having a problem with this gun debate is, you want to shoot a defenseless deer or animal or someone who looks at you wrong , there really isn't a lot we can do about that, but an assault rifle isn't for sport or defending ourselves. It's for mass killings of people in a short amount of time. That's the problem. There is no reason for any American citizen to own one. Let's try to change the laws. Right on Piers. Thank you for having the courage to stand up to the gun maniacs. Friday night was the day to start this debate and we need to keep this debate going until we finally make some sensible progress. Those 70 people did not need to suffer injury and death. Why should we allow anyone to buy an assault rifle or thousands of round of ammunition? There is simply no legitimate reason or right for allowing this in a civilized country. If this young man could do this, terrorists could too. Guns are tools of death, not freedom and it is high time we addressed this issue directly and keep the pressure up until sensible gun control is the law of the land.

Regardless of which side of the gun control debate you take, it is wasted breath. If all the world's gun manufacturing ceased this minute, there would be millions of guns available for centuries. Piers and those like him merely want to make sure that only the bad guys possess them. Why not go the other route and encourage EVERYONE to carry a firearm? If the objective is to reduce crime, injury, and death, why do gun control advocates refuse to recognize the obvious rationale that MANY guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, properly trained to use them, is a far more practical means of reaching that objective? Well folks its been real but I just can't follow this thread anymore I knew there were a lot of ignorant sheep out there but I fear it's far worse than I ever thought !! Forty-three years ago on my husband’s and my first date, we were eating frozen custard at a university cafeteria when a young man began shooting into the crowd. One girl was hit at close range. Of course, back then, there were only 6-8 bullets but nevertheless, it was chillingly surreal and for months after any sudden noise seemed profoundly magnified and triggered anxiety. If this young shooter had access to the weapons of today, not to mention 7000 rounds of ammunition, we, in all probability would not be here, nor my children or grand-children. I grew up in a home with guns and support the right to
bare arms but there is a point of reflection for reconsideration of gun laws…when a person orders 7000 rounds of ammunition for guns designed solely for death and destruction. This can’t be a common purchase.

To drive a car one needs 1) to file an application, 2) pass a written and driving test and 3) proof of insurance 4) and a license to drive. Maybe such a process is necessary for owning weapons and buying bullets. Crossing signs and lights protect, some drugs are illegal, seat belts are mandatory, not using the cell phone while driving is illegal, etc., — is protecting the public taking rights away?

You are correct in the fact to drive legally you must have a drivers license. In most states you must take a test before buying a firearm.

it is not the leadership of the NRA that is "cowerd the leadership" it is the 4.3 million voters that support the NRA and vote for the respective leaders. As to "reasonable regulation" that is already in place, to buy a gun you have to go through a background check, which this person did. This regulation did not find anything out of place. What other regulation do you want? Yes I know, a total gun ban. How did that work for proabition, not very well. How has that been going for the war on drugs? again not very well in fact the drug war is one of the causes of gun violence in Ameraica so banning a dug doesn't work and neither will banning guns.
As for bringing up the gun issue less than 24 hours later, that was self serving, to create ratings, and to aggitate the listeing public about an issue that has been debated for years and I mean years and will probably go on for years. This is nothing new, have a gun crime, start the debate over gun ownership, increase viewer/readership, go on to next subject. This topic has been brought in front of the Supreme Court, and has had rulings that support the Second Amendment and the Gun industry is the most highly regulated industry in the country so now what? I want to express my support of your comments on the Aurora massacre and your vigorous challenge to Koppel on the timing of thoughts about gun control. It's enough already. Innocent lives should not continue to be held hostage to the NRA and the anti-gun control lobby. A person who lives in 800 square foot apartment does not need semi-automatic weapons and over 6000 rounds of ammunition to safeguard his home,. If the killer did not have access to the weapons he obtained and the ammunition, he most probably could not have killed and wounded so many people. Proper gun control legislation would reduce the intensity of such outrages as Aurora. I grieve for the innocent lives lost and the those who will forever be affected by this horrendous event.

I don't understand this blind view on gun control that so many are pushing. If we made ALL guns illegal, what would it accomplish? Isn't murder already illegal? How about drugs? Yet, murders still happen everyday and drugs are everywhere. So, such a ban would only prevent "law-abiding" citizens from carrying weapons. It would not affect the criminals very much at all. If they can easily get illegal drugs now, they would get illegal guns then. The only difference is, they wouldn't have to give any thought at all to the possibility of there being a gun-owner at that home they are thinking about invading. Sounds like a gun ban would be a wonderful development, IF you are meaning to live the criminal life anyway, it would just make it easier for you. It's very similar to a saying I have often heard, "Locks are to keep the honest people out, they don't keep criminals out." Same here, laws only restrict those who would abide by them in the first place, not criminals. However, I don't expect those blinded by tunnel vision and oblivious to the REAL world to understand at all.

Intellectually, surely you must know that your remark during the interview (forgive the paraphrase) "I fully support the 2nd Amendment and Americans' right to defend themselve 'in their home' is horridly flawed. You are wrong and misinformed about the NRA, I am sorry to tell you that, but you are wrong. It is the people that support the NRA. Without the backing of the people there would not be any such organization. The organization is growing because of the growing aggression in this country and the fear of what the future holds.
Well that may be the case, but I can tell you I witnessed a case of McDonalds being ask to turn off CNN because of the comments by Piers. The gentleman, gracefully ask that the CNN program either be turned off or changed to another channel while he was there. The manager said he couldn't do that. The man said thank you, and then said " I'm sorry I can't eat here then" and walked out. There were others that were standing in line and they patted the man on the sholder and then walked out with him as well. That cost them 3 customers that I saw. Not sure this is going on all over but it sure was happening at this one place.
Also, this subject has been debated for years, been taken in one forum or another to the Supreme Court, and has been debated in the US House and Senate every year for at least the last 6 or 8 years. So was this program needed that soon after this happened, NO. This was a ratings play, Piers and CNN had to know that by bringing this subject up that it would create a intense commentary on a subject that would incresase their ratings for that day..Plain and simple..

Most pro-gun people want guns to protect themselves. Protect from whom? Do they not trust their fellow citizens? May be not to certain extent since our gun selling is out of control. Why in the first place am I required to protect myself? Because someone who does not deserve access to guns, has an the access. Where does it stop? There is a need to seriously think on the issue. While we can't stop 'mad' people from doing harm to the society, we can limit the damage they can do. By freely distributing more and more sophisticated assault 'tools' are we not digging our own graves?
If we compare the US with other developed countries in terms of the reasons that trigger these kind of killings, most problems we see here are seen in other countries also. However one striking difference between us and other countries is access to guns. One of our most important basic values is living peacefully and letting others live the same way. I do not understand how guns help us here. Nowhere in the peace loving part of the world guns have acquired more importance than it has in the US. We in the USA are obsessed with guns. We just can't accept gun control to the extent that people who talk about it are ridiculed. There are many sophisticated excuses given by people that guns are 'tools' or 'pens don’t cause mis-spellings how can guns cause killings'. However there is a serous need to consider on the issue. .
May people give justification that gun violence is seen in other countries also where there are strict gun controls. However, check the frequency of such attacks. US has one of the highest frequencies.
Where does this stop? It has to stop at the source.
We need to consider the era when Second Amendment was written. Is it not time to reconsider the wording? Everything has to adapt with changing times. It is time to change the outdated concepts.
I bet no matter what information sharing and education we impart to people as long as we have easy access to guns, we will face these kind of problems.

Senator John McCain has been on TV downplaying the idea of gun control..he cites Norway as a case in point where they have strict gun control laws..yet some guy with a gun went berserk and killed scores of people..so how many people are killed on average each year in Norway..approx 100 or so..and how many are killed here each year on average where we have little gun control..approx. 10,000..Senator McCain is just another example of gutless politicians who sing to the tune of the NRA.
Pete, Using your numbers that means in Norway they kill 100 people out of a population (2011) of 4,952,000 people
while in the United States your numbers are 10,000 people out of a population of 311,800,000
In fact Norway has close to the same kill rate as the US, if you take 100 per 5 million and you divide the 312 million by 5 that gives 62.4 now multiply that by 100 and you get 6240 deaths, not 10,000 but still for a country that has a very very strick gun laws that comes close to the US totals.
So now your 100 per 10,000 doesn't seem as big when you figure the number per capata population into the equation.

So public access to firearms is the debate. What happens when items are not available publicly? Oh yea the black market, I forgot about that. Piers is hosting a show about 'The Big Story' and is doing one of the worst jobs as a journalist that I've seen in a significant period of time. While I am in no way a supporter of the NRA and am not a gun owner, I finally tuned in to another channel as Piers had a guest invited who was not allowed to finish any of his points without being interrupted by Piers who obviously promoted a single agenda. This type of discussion ends up deepening polarized views, rather than having a rational discussion that can enhance the opportunity to get rid of illegal guns and prevent the type of tragedy experienced in the past week. This was not helpful in creating constructive dialogue, Piers. Rather, your approach contributed to entrenched positions rather than constructive principles. You made very poor use of your opportunity on the air waves.

GUN crime has almost trebled in London during the past year and is soaring in other British cities, according to Home Office figures obtained by The Telegraph.
Police chiefs fear that Britain is witnessing the kind of cocaine-fuelled violence that burst upon American cities in the 1980s. Cocaine, particularly from Jamaica, now floods into Britain, while the availability of weapons – many of them from eastern Europe – is also increasing.
Detectives in London say that the illegal importation of guns started after the end of the Bosnia conflict and that they are changing hands for as little as £200. During the 10 months to January 31, there were 939 crimes involving firearms in the Metropolitan Police area compared with 322 in the 10 months to the end of January, 2001 – an almost three-fold increase.
In Merseyside there were 57 shootings during the 12 months to last December compared with 15 in the same period the year before. Greater Manchester also recorded a 23 per cent increase in gun crime and there have been rises in Nottinghamshire, Avon and Somerset, West Yorkshire and the Northumbria Police area which covers Newcastle.
Gun crimes during the first 10 months of the annual period have trebled in most of the urban areas which have so far submitted statistics to the Home Office. Sir John Stevens, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said gun gangs were spreading across the country whereas, until recently, they were confined to a handful of London boroughs.

I just watched a debate on this show on the opinion of taking away the second amendment rights of Americans. First of all unless you have a class three weapons permit, which is very hard to get, the normal civilian cannot purchase an "assault rifle"unless they are getting them from the black market. It doesn't matter if a weapon holds 1 round or 100, a bullet kids the same

Hi Piers, I am from Australia where we are all disturbed by what is happening so regularly in the US. In 1996 we had a terrible massacre by a man with automatic weapons who killed 32 people in Tasmania, Australia. After that the Prime Minister banned automatic rifles and handguns and ordered everyone to hand in their guns to receive compensation. Since then we have not had any more massacres.
We are all finding it hard to understand how many Americans feel they need the right to own military style automatic weapons? In Australia we have a much bigger and more wild outback with many more animals who will kill humans and our hunters are able to get by just fine.

I am in favor of much increased control of guns in this country. I am opposed to the NRA and how politicians are afraid to take positions against the NRA. Even with all of this, I was very disturbed by how Piers Morgan treated John Lott tonight. He basically verbally attacked Mr Lott, giving him essentially no chance to express his ideas. This is no way to have a discussion. Why did he invite Mr Lott onto the show if this was the way he was going to treat him? I felt so badly about this that I had to turn the program off.

Why does CNN allow a British national to present his personal agenda on American television? Piers Morgan has successfully taken a horrific tragedy and used it to selfishly broadcast his own radical beliefs. How insulting to all of the victims of the Aurora tragedy! What a sorry excuse for journalism.

Piers was so incredibly rude to his guest author tonight. I am horrified that any host would treat his guest the way Piers did. He would ask his guest a question repeatedly but interrupt each time the author tried to speak. When the author asked if Piers would allow him to answer now Piers told him his answers were stupid. Piers monopolized the entire interview. It was disgraceful and embarassing to watch. I suggest Piers watch what he did to his guest and I am sure he will offer an apology to both the guest and the audience. I sincerely hope he does.

I'm a Canadian who owns guns (shotguns/rifles, plus a WW2 german handgun)...all which were registered under our now scrapped long gun registry. Thankfully our current government scrapped this law which affected more legal gun users, than illegal ones. "Joe Criminal" isn't going to register his illegal gun...it's just common sense. I do agree that some guns should be registered and possibly psychological testing needs to be done before certain individuals get their semi-automatic or automatic weapons or handguns...You don't need these types of guns on a farm!!!! It is vital to have reasonable discussions about the terrible problem of violence, especially by people shooting guns. Tonight, Piers Morgan, you significantly set back the potential for intelligent discussion by steamrolling over your NRA guest. You had help from Mr. Dershowitz, who contributed little other than repeating "this is junk science." Between you and Dershowitz, you made a great case for the gun lobby. More regulation is not the answer. As stated, more people die from car accidents. Should there be more regulations? Airplanes crash, people die, should there be more regulations? How about more regulation on the pharmacutical industryand the FDA. As was reported in the journal of the american medical association a few years ago, 106,000 people die each year from prescription drugs prescibed by doctors and used propperly. Why is this not talked about Piers and the other so called journalists?
Agreed Jack, prescription drug use is a huge problem, that's why it has been in the news so much. Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, etc...it's on HLN's Dr. Drew pretty much every night! And, yes there should be more regulations on the airlines, history shows us when there is less regulation, there are more deaths. And cars...first, we need cars, and second, car production and safety is majorly regulated. Ie, air bags, seat belts, bumper standards.
Mr. Morgan took some valid points and then showed his ignorance on guns. He was very rude to people that were against his position and again showed his disdain for the subject. This is not England and they are no perfect country either. This was not the time for him to get on his pedestal and try to make this point. Maybe he is desperate for ratings. His show is on the whole not very good.
The gun control debate should start with two simple, concrete measures:
1. Heavy weapons (machine guns of any kind) should be banned.
2. Ammo clips, magazines, or drums should have a 6-7 bullet limit.
At some point you have to stand up to the NRA and say these weapons and devices are only for military and law enforcement use.
Both heavy weapons and multi-round clips are designed for one thing: to kill the maximum number of people in the shortest amount of time.
If our congress can't limit the type of weaponry and fire rate – what's next on the streets: howitzers?
When is it enough? Using the NRA arguments, where the type of weapon and fire rate don't matter, they could argue citizens have the right to bear nuclear and laser weapons of the future. Why not?
This country has been hijacked by the NRA. Due to the epidemic gun violence in this country we are no longer the "best country in the world" – by a long shot. Our quality of life continues to erode.
None of the laws will work unless there's aggressive enforcement. Anyone caught with an illegal weapon or device goes to prison. I would also severly limit access to law enforcement protective gear and handguns to only people who have a need – in other words, sort of like a concealed weapons permit.
Handguns have always been a law enforcement weapon but an exception could be made for keeping them in the home or carrying concealed for those who qualify.
We already have limits on many individual freedoms – why not with weapons and weapon accessories?

Now, also let me say that if Colorado is so lose with their private gun ownership laws, how come no one there at that movie was carrying a concealed weapon that could have returned fire to that coward? It is hard to believe that with all those that were there that night, no one had a legal fire arm that might have shot back to prevent so many that were killed or severely wounded. If anyone had done that they would have been a hero to everyone that was there. But to do that you would have to have a legally owned concealed weapon. So where were all these gun toting citizens?
