Mayor Michael Bloomberg on gun control: "Across this country, mayors in every city have to address the guns on the street issue"

Coming up this evening at 9 p.m., "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a candid commentary on gun control.

On the heels of Friday's deadly shooting in Aurora, CO, the head of the executive branch of New York City's government feels a certain personal accountability when the topic turns towards bettering the nation:

"I have a responsibility, just like you do, just like everybody does in this country, to try to address the key issues," he tells Piers Morgan. "You and I can't solve the problem, but we can demand that those elected officials who are - or want to be in charge, have a solution to the problem."

A co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns – a coalition of more than 600 mayors fighting illegal gun trafficking and gun violence – Bloomberg suggest his particular position demands more action than those holding other offices:

"Across this country, mayors in every city have to address the guns on the street issue, some more effectively than others. But mayors are about solutions. They aren't about talking," says New York City's mayor since 2002. "It would be laughable to say to a mayor, 'Well, what are you going to do' and him saying, 'Well, I've just - I really feel your pain.' That's not what they would say. They'd never get away with that. Unfortunately, we don't hold other levels of government to that standard."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in this evening at 9 p.m. as the only man to ever serve three consecutive terms as the Mayor of New York City sits down for a primetime exclusive interview.

Gun control is a critical debate. But if the smoke we see reveals fire, if James Holmes is seriously mentally ill, Mayor Bloomberg might want to consider steps to stoping flare-ups of psychosis first. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Rikers Island is among the top 4 inpatient facilities for mentally ill people because governement at all levels keeps cutting mental health services. The result, according to the DOJ, is about 50% of all inmates have symptoms of serious mental illness. I look forward to joining Piers tonight and hope to have the chance to ask his Honor about putting out fires before they start with as much vigor as his advocy for more fire extinguishers (gun control).

I am no scientist by any means, but I believe that if laws are passed for "more gun control" it will only stop honest people from buying guns. Criminal's do not follow the laws, thus that is why they are criminals. This shooting in Colorado is horrific and heart breaking, but I do not believe gun control would have prevented this, when criminals want something, they will do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals.

The far left, including CNN and Piers Morgan, scream for gun control when something like the theater killings happen.
However, they are the same people in bed with Hollywood who promotes these kinds of terrors on 95% of movies produced. How ironic that people were in the theater to watch the same type of mayhem. Let's hear the news media criticize movie-makers for a change for producing pictures that glorify guns.

i totally agree with you!! why are people that are convicted of murder or even attempted murder allowed the chance to reenter the public?!! in my opininion, any one that has even allowed the thought to enter their mind should be locked up or delt with otherwise!!!!! while a drug user has to do more time?!!!!! i am all for the nra, guns dont kill people, people do!!!! if a crazy person wants someone dead and cant get a gun, they will find an a alternative method!!!!!! and i feel the need to say this too, my grandmother was murded!! my family suffered greatly, it wasnt the guns fault!!!!!!! the fault was people and an early parole with good behavoir!!!!!! i was robbed of my grandmother growing up, but it was not the guns fault!!!! that guy was crazy and wouldve done it regaurdless!!!!!! there is more details than what ive said but they only lead to my belief that ive stated already!!!!!!! as far as tougher gun control is concerned, the only thing left to do is to teach kids growing up how to use them with strict discipline!!!!!!!

SanbroSandrabrown obama is not a president, he's just sitting in the office. why do people like you think that laws will cause guns to just magically disappear. ask mayor daily his city banned hand guns and c\shooting and crime went up. what happened when the gov't banned alcohol. if the elected people had a pair they would enforce the laws on the books. even that won’t stop shooting, guns will flow from mexico even if sales would stop in the usa. obama would not want to stop the flow of anything from mexico because his votes are flowing from mexico.

Sarah ask the mayor what’s going to convince the criminals to give up their guns? Gun laws only work for law abiding people. HELL will freeze over before criminals give up their guns. All this is lip service by rich people to make themselves look like they are doing something. piers morgan is like so many other do-gooders who try to convince the general public that their policies will work. it’s all smoke screens. bloombury nor piers has to live where we live they live in gated communities with guards with GUNS. Thats the point! There should be no way available for a person good or bad to purchase that type of equipment. As you can's always the bad ones exploiting it! I believe in the right to bear arms by the American citizens. But, I don't agree with the capability of any citizen being able to go in a local store and purchase an assault weapon with the same round capability, and no training on the weapon. In the Marines, we recieved extensive training on using basically the same rifle, only full automatic capabilities.

I really wish Piers would allow all views. These debates have been so one-side that it is pathetic and the worst I have seen so far on the news. I couldn't hardly believe my ears/eyes. Perhaps if Piers would listen to the other side of the story, as I thought you were supposed to on news interviews, he might just learn something. Gun laws only take guns from the law abiding citizens. I've talked to Piers' country men & women and heard how horrible they think it is for only criminal to have guns and they have no protection. Shame on your, Piers, for being so unfair because "you" happen to believe a certain way that you will not even allow anyone on the other side to tell their views and why they believe as they do.

I have lost a lot respect for Piers tonight, he has an agenda and it really showed tonight. It didn't help him that the blood sucking lawyer wanted to ban all semiautomatic guns, so law abiding citizens should only have access to bolt action and black powder guns ? Its clear piers is part of an agenda to dearm the population through laws gradually passed by using events like this to "convince us" we should give up our second ammendment rights so there will no more of these incidents. Piers is not a journalist, he is a hired propagandist and he is not interested in honest debate, only furthering his cause and that of the people who put him on CNN to spew his propaganda.

What will it take for Americans to get it through their thik skulls...owning a gun is wrong and should not be permitted....8,000 deaths in the u.s. due to guns is outrageous.

Had Piers allowed his guest, John Loft, to utter a sentence, you would have known the other side of the story. Gun laws have not helped in the UK or anywhere else, for that matter. It only allows the criminals to have guns and law abiding citizens to have no protection. If you could hear some of the people in the UK talk about how horrible it is not to be able to protect themselves, perhaps you would change your mind, too. The real problem should be addressed here, which is depression/mental illness in this country. You also have to take into consideration how much bigger this country is than the UK when talking statistics. The statistics do show, tho, the UK's gun laws did nothing. And we aren't the UK or Europe & if you take a good look at those countries & what's happening & where they're going, I don't think any American would want to follow them.

If people put put their emotions aside and look at the facts objectively, they would see that the countries that banned guns entirely saw their murder and violent crime rates increase. This would include England and Australia. If you just hate guns and want them banned, that is fine but don't try to pretend that you want it done to save lives.

You, Piers Morgan and Mayor Bloomberg (who has armed security that the average citizen most of the time cannot afford) are ridiculous, guns kill, as well as knifes, bats, cars, bricks, you name it, many things can be used as weapons to create bodily harm. You can restrict gun ownership all you want, but you will never be able to restrict or determine evil intent, Law abiding citizens who carry weapons with permits and had to have training and take classes strictly for protection DONT kill people, CRIMINALS on a daily basis who could give two flips about gun control laws, who will get their hands on illegal weapons regardless, KILL PEOPLE. Then there's the occasional mentally unstable person as well who commit attrocities such as in CO. Once again, LAW ABIDING CITIZENS need to be able to protect themselves from people who meet the above criteria because you never know when it can happen to you, not to say just because you have a legal carry gun you will make it out alive in any self defense situation, but i rather have a slim chance than no chance at all.

There are 6 MILLION American citizens with concealed carry permits. Gun CRIME is dropping. ALL crime is dropping in America. 6 MILLION citizens carrying concealed weapons. Protecting themselves, their families, the person next to them, when there are no policemen around. You want to take that ability away from law abiding citizens??? I tell you what. If you find yourself in a situation where you NEED a gun and don't have one, but the man next to you does, remember you wanted to take his gun away when he saves your life.

America also has large and impoverished black and hispanic populations ( mostly mexican) where most of the crime occurs. The crime and poverty rates in White and Asian american communities is roughly equal to that of Europe and Canada.

These people who are chanting down Piers are clearly uneducated.....because if they were educated, they would know how to research these things and would clearly see that our country ranks #1 on the list of murders among civilized countries at 5.22/100,000.! Germany has a murder rate of .8/100,000 and they have strict gun control laws. The rest of Europe and Canada also have strict gun control laws and have murder rates around 1.3/100,000 people...(you can look up the murder rates online). it's so stupid to defend these murder weapons.

DR, You can't compare a country like England to the entire USof A. That entire country is only 50,345 sq miles. The state of Colorado is 104,100 sq miles (twice as large). Germany and other European COUNTRIES are just as small. Actually, that canbe said about countries on other continents as well. Now if someone wants to debate a SECTION of the United States, so be it., But you can't compare Country to Country, the US of A is just to large.

Whats really bad is wasting valuable air time listening to this "person" and if P. So glad to see CNN talking about the issue of gun control and prevention strategies-how many more mass shootings do we need to see before we realize that we should have more restrictions on guns. An 18 year old can go out a get a gun permit but yet can't get a drink in a bar, someone can "lose" their gun and then not be accountable for misuse of it. You can't go out and buy a drum full of sudafed becuase you might make meth but yet you can buy a drum barrell fun of bullets-something is wrong here...conditions change, communities change and values change- so should our laws.

If some nut wants to kill someone he will find a way with or without a gun. Make the punishments more death penalty. 911 was one of America's worst days...they used planes, should we get rid of all the planes. Some nut use cars to run people off roads and cause deadly we get rid of all cars. Better answers than to ban all guns. Gun makers have gun locks supplied with the purchase of new guns. Guns are not complicated pieces of machinery...lots of people could make one from scratch if needed. The American Indian used the bow and arrow and war clubs and spears and knives...if someone wants to kill he will find a way...even without guns.

Just watched a little of your show and have became out raged over Michael Bloomberg assestment over gun control. I have a right to protect myself and my family especially from idiots like the one in Colorodo. Is it a sad state of affairs when something like this happens. I feel however that if a citizen or citizens were able to have a gun on their hip this clown maybe just maybe wouldn't have killed all those patrons at the movie. In fact he might have been stopped or killed if a few armed citizens were able to carry a conceled weapon. Trust the police Bloomberg? yea when they show up after 5 min I dont think so. My family and my life are more important to risk it on the hopes that the response time is in question. So Bloomberg nice words in a world of no sin, crazy's and lunatics. But this is the real world we must protect ourselfs at all time. Clean up New York first then talk....( not sponsered by the NRA)

I really respect Mayor Bloomberg! Guns have gotten out of hand in this country. A simple gun will do the trick if someone is threatening another's security. WE DON'T NEED ASSAULT WEAPONS - EVER!!!!! I also agree with another comment that we need to look into the mental health issues in this country. Stricter gun regulations and mental health care would no doubt mean a much safer America. Thank you for your thought, Mayer Bloomberg!!!

As a Police Chief, I would like to ask why hold the gun responible for a person's action and not the person. Alcohol kills more people the guns but you will not hear the Mayor push for the banning of alcohol. Same for drugs. Mayor just said that if there was a disease that would kill 48,000 people, it would be a top story. Again alcohol and other abused drugs but those are untouchable subjects. I agree that gun control may need to be reviewed but a person's needs to be held accountable for their own actions. There are so many federal laws about firearms, but they are rarely enforced. We need to enforce these laws. Gun control is not the only answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How about treating those who commit crimes as criminals not no longer allowing them to live very comfortable lives in a country club that is called prison. We have became so worried about the criminals rights that we have given up our own rights. There is so much that can be said. And now all we need is Michael Moore is grace us with his (lack of reality) knowledge!!!!!!!

Because Morgan's intelligence is being insulted by the "Tool" who came on his show to speak up on behalf of semi-automatic weapon ownership, PARTICULARLY in the wake of a national tragedy. This isn't about the right to own a hand weapon or a carry conceal permit or defend one's property or self. Self defense is quite different than personal assault on other people STUPID. That's the argument here. And obviously NRA members can't follow simple logic. The question is not only who in the world would have the nerve to try and defend a broad array of gun ownership only 3 days later but who also represents people who are completely SELF ABSORBED about assuming arcane and irrelevant rights. The bright light is, Morgan not even a citizen is more outraged by his citizen guest. Notice the guest's complete lack of passion while trying to defend the notion of mass destruction weapons, because he knows how stupid its is. Semi automatic guns don't kill people except that the idiots who choose to PURCHASE them do!

The mayor thinks he has a solution, but he cannot be sure. He (and other elected officials) should call for a study to be done by a respected university to attempt to determine the root causes of this mass violence. This never used to happen. Something is causing this to become "normal" behavior for the unblanaced mind. Guns have always been around, so what is it that is affecting the psyche of so many epople that accepts violence as a legitimate form of exxpression? Lets see the serious study and if they conclude that it is guns, so be it. But let's see the study Mayor.

They are just poor kids got very sick. If they were in another country, they wouldn't never be able to get hands on any weapon or gun, instead they would be get treated and return to normal life. Don't believe that they can buy illegal guns, they are not criminals they are just crazy get guns because weapons are very easy to get. Mayor Bloomberg is wrong about gun control. If citizens were able to carry guns in the "Criminal Safe Zones" that is where the government has decided only criminals are allowed to carry guns a citizen may have been able to react and protect himself. If you try to stop US citizens from having firearms, you have no clue. Drug runners have a billion dollar buisiness going in the US. If you stop selling Fire Arms, the average citizen will not be able to defend themselves or thier property. Only crminals will have guns. As for colorado, take the guns away and a Large Pick-Up truck in a parking lot of a movie primiere will accomplish the same thing. You can't stop "Nuts". By the way, I dislike your scewed journalism when talking to your guest. Your Guy Alan Dersherwitz Compares US Gun law to a Stalinist approach to gun law? You nee d better guests. We should put a ban on parents from bringing 6 year olds into movie theatres that have violence. The violence in movies contributes to the mental state of young people. I think parents do not want to get a baby sitter and this should be child abuse. We want to take large size pop from people but will let parents abuse their children mentally exposing them to this violence at an early age.

Do you think if we get rid of black people there won't be any more murders? Maybe the problem is more complex than your simple mind can comprehend. Perhaps we could try a comprehensive approach, improve the unemployment rate, enforce the laws that are already on the books, stop drugs from crossing the border, etc. That kind of complex thought process is how we evolved since we moved out of the caves. I can tell you why a person needs an assault weapon. We had a vehicle stollen out of our front yard. My property and home is my castle. When someone crosses my property line without permission, I considere that an assualt. If they do not leave when instructed, I have the right to defend that assault. There is a difference between a military version of the ar 15 and the non military. The military version is automatic, if shoots as long as you hold the trigger. The non military version is semi automatic, you must squeeze the trigger each time you want to shoot. You only fire as fast as you can pull the trigger.

We should not let actions of one person, however horrible, cause the remainder of the law abiding citizens from possessing weapons!

Piers: I am as outraged and disgusted as you are by what happened in Aurora, Colo. And I agree with Michael Bloomberg and thank you for airing that interview. But I am very disappointed and surprised at the way you treated the followup guest, John Lott, tonight. If you weren't going to let him speak and treat him with respect, why did you have him on the program? So you and Alan Derschowitz could beat him up as a tag team? I think you owe that man an apology. It's one thing to disagree, but you don't have to act like he's the one who walked into that theater heavily armed and started shooting. Yes, people need to be held accountable. But let's start with putting pressure on our politicians to do the right thing rather than beating up some poor schmuck who appears on your program. And let's have a national debate about why these gun dealers feel the need to sell these types of weapons. Once again greed has ruled the day and will be our ruination.

You allowed Mr. Bloomberg to have every opportunity to make his point, but that same professional courtesy was not extended to Mr. Lott. Take your personal opinion out of the equation. Is tha news show, or just all about Piers.
Also, I agrees with Linda that a part of our problem is that children under 13 do not belong at a PG-13 film. Our society is becoming so numb to violence, and part of that problem is parents exposing their children to violent media at such a young age. No one deserved to be shot at this Batman movie, but seriously 4 and 6 year olds attending this. Shame on the parents

If its the "mayors'" responsibilities to take action on this issue.....? Why havent they stopped the drug issue?!
The fact of the matter is you can't stop criminals from getting what they want. Drug users are going to find drugs, just like criminals that want to guns in crimes are going to get ahold of those guns. If we made specific guide lines to control guns at the county level. The premise by which the second admendment was based upon, is that if the government defaulted and collpased the citizens of the USA could protect and defend themselves. I think there should be realistic guild lines to which we as citizens should follow as to regisitering the guns and periodic training taught by local law enforcement. Israel has one the if not the lowest crime rate and because every one in that country has the right to own a gun and most do becase they have the means to stop the crime. More gun less crime is a vailid concept. Also If you have someone on your show talk about their point of view, maybe, let them speak before you blast them. You have six or seven pieces of paper in front of you with statistics and printed facts. I would think that you would want to have them speak on the items the researched, being that wrote a book. Im not saying that completely right, but are you? I understand its your show but this is the problem with handling our problems in this country. No one side is right. It takes understanding and time to resolve these issues. I had to change the channel tonight because I really dont want to watch you and pannel talk in circles acting one side is right and one side is wrong. If you want to depict that NRA as scheming monetye hungry organisation, why dont you pointout where all our mayors and congressmen and senators are getting that extra money they stuff their pockets with?

The real debate is whether the process to obtain a gun should be re-evaluted, not whether we should have them or not... That's just nonsense! It is not a debate, their is not an intelligent way to debate it, especially when Mr. morgan will not let the debat happen... Out of control... You are just like Fox News, just they other way... The International Crime Victims Survey, conducted by Leiden University in Holland, found that England and Wales ranked second overall in violent crime among industrialized nations. Twenty-six percent of English citizens - roughly one-quarter of the population - have been victimized by violent crime. Australia led the list with more than 30 percent of its population victimized. The United States didn't even make the "top 10" list of industrialized nations whose citizens were victimized by crime. Britain and Australia have strict gun laws.

Why not make knives illegal? They kill people too. The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The founders were very intelligent when they wrote this. The 2nd amendment is not only to defend yourself and family but from a out of control government as well. Why in the heck do you think we became America? Because some Patriots stood up to the British Government.

To even think about banning guns is the absolutely the wrong thinking. I strongly oppose Mayor Bloomberg. He is ridiculous. He wants to ban soda? The guy is a nut and needs to move to China.

England and Austalia have no weapons. The only people that own weapons are the criminals. Just look at Mexico.

Once more people start carrying firearms, the criminals will think twice about burglarizing a home or business. I am in Law Enforcement and ask the hardended criminals and they all say the same thing. "If I think someone has a gun, I ain't gonna even try."

These interviews on gun control were hyper emotional but without fact. Piers insulted Americans by suggesting that Americans were not even angered by the gun violence. Mass shootings by insane individuals get all the news, but they occur all over the world, including Canada and Europe. 19 people were shot at a party in Toronto just last weekend. Dozens have been shot in mass shootings in France ( sniper), Norway, Finland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in recent years. The real difference involves gun crimes on a smaller scale. Half of murder victims and murderers in the US are found in the black population. That is simply a fact. 50% of the gun violence and all murders for that matter are within a community that makes up about 12% of the population. Gun violence is very , very rare in other communities. The rate of gun violence in suburban America ( where most people live) and small town America is almost non existent.
The issue is not gun laws, it is much deeper than that. It speaks to the problems of crime, poverty and other social problems in the black community. Perhaps bringing up race is not politically correct but it is true.

Whether you are for gun control or against gun control, Mr. a journalist you ought to be ashamed of yourself for conducting such a poor interview with Mr. Lott. You barely gave the man enough time to speak and you did all the talking. I think most Americans...when given the facts and doing their own research can make up their own minds on this issue without you telling us what we should or shouldn't think. I'm very offended at your arrogance and as a journalist you failed miserably tonight. If you have moved your show format from interview to commentary....hey...go ahead and talk away till you turn blue, but I thought this show was an interview format where expert guests do most of the talking and a journalist facilitates. You had your one chance with me. I will no longer bother to hesitate on your show. I wanted to hear what he had to say and all you did was talk and act like a bully. Dersowitz was no better. What happened in Colorada was horrible, simply horrible. However, the two cities in the country regarding gun laws are Chicago and New York, yet it's a free for all there. It's not about guns, it's about culture. That young man could have done many things in that theatre to create just as many casulties. He didn't have to use a gun to create mass murder. Had he used a different method, would your show be calling for an end to that method? If somebody were to drive into a crowd of people and have the same results, would you be there banning cars? You are all about sensationalism, and you will never have me even slow down any ANY show you are on. You're not worth my time. exactly.. Piers was horrible tonight and the guy who he brought on ( who i normally find brilliant) to back him up didn't even know anything about guns, let alone gun laws around the world. THe rate of gun violence within the white population in the USA is about the same as it is in Europe. Mass shootings are just as common in Europe and Canada on a per capita rate. It is the day to day violence ( 1 or 2 victims) where the US is way worse but 50% of those crimes are found in the black population, which is only 12% of the US population. It is easy for Europeans in countries with 95% white populations to balk as US gun laws, but most of the violence in the US occurs in inner city Detroit and Chicago not the suburbs where most Americans live. Europe has nothing like inner city Detroit.

How sad that strict gun controls cannot prevent mass killing. In Dunblane Scotland in 1996, 16 children were killed. Proportionally, in a nation of 300 million, that would amount to roughly 1000 people.

That was the only positive part of the program Mr. Morgan's behavior with Lott wass outrageous. Why invite someone on if you have no intention of listenng to them or letting them speak? It is funny how Piers never lets anyone talk, unless it supports his view. I would like him to do two things for me:

    1. Pick up a copy of American Rifleman and read " The Armed Citizen" section of the magazine. What do you say to the fact there are countless stories nationwide(hardly ever broadcasted on the liberal media) in where a gun has prevent injury or death to a homeowner or his family).

    2. Have a debate about gun control with David Keene (NRA Pres.) or Wayne LaPierre (NRA V.P.).......not some third rate hack who writes a book, who can not stand up for himself. Bring in someone who has way better skills in debating with some one like you Piers. And, let the people who are NOT on your side have just as much time on air and the people you have on to counter them.

A high schooler could take Daddy's F-150 pickup full of gasoline and incediary material and drive ninety miles an hour into the line of people in front of the theatre and kill more than died in this tragedy.

Outlaw pickups and gasoline? Put governors on the truck. Dispense gasoline at a gallon at a time? Piers, congratulations on your great interview with Mayor Bloomberg on gun control. I simply cannot fathom why this issue has never been dealt with – and the killings go on. The founding fathers did not have mayhem and mass murder in mind when the "right to bear arms" was included.

I love how you assume what the founding fathers had in mind when you used them as reference to your argument. Its my understanding from my readings in history that the founding fathers were far more used to acts of violence of this nature than were are today. I would also have to say based on their actions that it is more likely that the founding fathers disagree with Piers and Bloomberg and would oppose gun control.

Anyone else feel that we are shooting too many people in this country, that there are too many guns, that it is too easy to get them, so easy that the black market is swimming in supply? Anyone else feel that the legislators and the gun control organizations are so afraid of the NRA that they crawl on their hands and knees to the NRA begging for crumbs in the semblance of gun control? Anyone else understand that since the Supreme Court Heller decision in 2008 and McDonald in 2010, Justices Scalia and Alito have gun control on the run and the only thing preserving what gun control we have is the foot-dragging by lower courts who are stalling the gun control repeals that the Supreme Court is pushing? Anyone else ashamed that the world looks in disgust at our NRA-sponsored terrorism? Anyone? Anyone?

Crazy has always existed. Always will. It's one of the things to watch out for in a crazy society...hell even China, with its iron grip on every one of their citizens can't always prevent crazy. A mass killing happens there every now and then.

What "NRA-types" understand though is that it is essential people have the means to defend themselves from both crazy, criminal, and tyrant through the use of arms.

What you people averse to firearms fail to understand is that by fighting against YOUR own right to be able to defend yourself, you've simply transferred the power of self-defense and self-reliance to someone else. Someone else has the power, and you are simply theirs. Oh sure, you might think your government is honest and sincere, but, look through some books marked "history" and you'll find that soon changes when no one else but they have power over your life.

Piers, I usually like the way you interview, but today you were unfair to your guest. It was horrible! I couldn't believe you didn't give him a chance to talk. Let me say few things. A simple analysis of number of guns and gun-related violence may not give a complete picture. For instance, you may not perfectly compare England and U.S. If you want a complete analysis or comparison, you need to include other factors, such as size of countries, prevalence of mental-illness, culture, exposure to different sort of environments, per capita income, inequality etc..Other factors may explain the huge part of gun-related crime. Gun laws or number of guns may be related but its impact on gun-related may be minimal. I am not a researcher in this area but we should respect sound research outcomes. In general, we need more research in this area for a sound policy prescription.

then we have to make every other place like shopping malls more secure. Please tell this so called "security expert" that in shopping malls you have a chance to run away, in a movie theater you can't. Actually I want this guy fired and i want his job.

This gun control debate Piers is pushing is a waste of time with the country split on it as everything else.
Universal Conflict Education and Training is the only solution – to change the global culture of violence to
a culture of peace. We need to make peacemakers – that's what we do one at a time at
It will take time , a long time but let's begin – we will be teaching conflict resolutiion to everyone of all ages
online – join us in building a bridge of conflict resolution from here to a peaceful planet.

Well said. Bye, bye CNN. We're changing our channel. Every time Piers doesn't have the same opinion as an interview candidate, he doesn't give them a chance to explain or fully answer his own questions. We don't need to know his personal voice so strongly over his guests. He's no Larry! At least Larry was fair to everyone. I may not have the same stand as Mr. Lotts, but that poor man was treated like a second class citizen and Piers made himself look like he needed to go back to interview school. What a mess. Mr. Lotts should have left the room. It was uncalled for disrespect by Piers for a guest who was quite respectful. This was shameful.

He spent much of his time immersed in the computer, often participating in role-playing online games…”
There is already conjecture that James Holmes may have been involved in mind-altering neuroscience research and ended up becoming involved at a depth he never anticipated. His actions clearly show a strange detachment from reality, indicating he was not in his right mind. That can only typically be accomplished through drugs, hypnosis or trauma (and sometimes all three).
    His behavior doesn’t add up
    A D V E R T I S E M E N T

His behavior already reveals stark inconsistencies that question the mainstream explanation of events. For example, he opened fire on innocent people but then calmly surrendered to police without resistance. This is not consistent with the idea of “killing everyone.”
Furthermore, he then admitted to police that his apartment was booby-trapped with explosives. If you were really an evil-minded Joker trying to kill people (including cops), why would you warn them about the booby trap in advance? It doesn’t add up.
“Holmes was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, police said, adding he didn’t resist when he was arrested,” reports a local CBS news affiliate

I'm with you on gun control, Piers, but why invite Lott on your show if you won't let him speak? I wanted to hear what he had to say, not to be constantly interrupted by you. Calm down Piers Calm down Piers and keep your emotions to yourself!

Higher miles driven in car = higher chance of being killed in motor vehicle accident.

If you drive half as many miles per year you will reduce your chance of death by more than successfully taking guns away from all criminals. Problem is they wouldn't be the ones to hand them over.

I once watched Larry King moderate some brilliant debates on CNN. When he retired and Piers Morgan began his show I watched it and gave it a try. I felt that he interjected his personal opinion too much. I watched his show tonight and found myself amazed at how far CNN is slipping in quality interviews. I felt like I was watching O'Reilly or Olbermann. Piers would not let his guest speak because Piers thought his argument was "ridiculous." What has happened? The other guest also would not let the gun advocate finish either and referred to his studies as "junk science" in a condescending manner. What I did hear were some interesting points. Switzerland and Israel do have large per capita gun ownership and low crime rates. Studies do show that gun crime has risen since incorporated in UK. I thought the point about the Norway mass murderer and recent French mass murderer were also excellent things to point out. These seemed like valid arguments that could be explored. Instead Piers interrupted yelling at him that his ideas were idiotic. This is not conducive of a civilized debate. If Piers must yell to make a point and cut someone off from making their argument, it raises questions of whether Piers is worried about the truth. And if a moderator isn't interested in the truth, then why should I watch the news? I don't think I'll be watching this show again. I hope CNN doesn't continue down this path. It is the only major television news that has kept some semblance of objective reporting.

America is FREE. Freedom comes with inherent risks, but in the end the rewards outweigh the consequences. Unfortunately we have disturbed people that abuse freedom and use if for terrible acts. Gun control is much like prohibition. We learned that using alcohol was creating problems in our country, and some politicians fought to outlaw the act. Eventually the people's desire for freedom (the ability to decide whether or not they could use alcohol) defeated the prohibition and we now have the right to responsibly use alcohol.

I think what happened at the movie theater in Colorado is a horrible crime! I also believe it is a poor choice of events, in which, to use as precedence for the gun control battle. Gang violence in a particular neighborhood, or state would seem to make much more sense. This is why: I man with such deranged and psychotic plans would be much less deterred by gun control and would instead build IEDs and other terrible devices to accomplish this awful plan, as a gang member who may act in the moment and has easy access to firearms.

I do think we have a lot to learn from this horrible tragedy in Colorado, but I'm not sure sacrificing our freedom (ability to make responsible choices for ourselves and families) is the correct conclusion. With that being said. I do not believe arming our public leads to less crime. Maybe allowing each other to talk instead of asserting our beliefs over others, and truly listening to each other is the beginning to this process of learning how we can all live together as FREE Americans.

That isn't even really the issue though... There are already 300 million guns in America. If you ban ALL guns, where are they going to go? If we tell all legal gun owners that they MUST surrender their guns.. where are they going to go?

No other county has 300 million guns in the hands of their population. Europeans, under their various dictatorial governments in the 19th and 20th centuries banned weaponry from their populations, effectively disarming them. Canada would seem comparable.. but aside from Quebec,Canada was largely unsettled until after the US had their revolution and remained almost empty until decades later. There were only about 2 million people in all of Canada until the early 1900s. So therefore.. far less guns.

And above all, the rate of violence in the US black population can't be ignored. 50% of gun crimes occur there. White American crime rates are almost the same as crime rates in Canada or Europe.

John that is the real issue, and see there are some who don't wants to deal with the real issue because it requires a change of heart. and that can only happen with having a relationship with the Saviour of the world His name is Jesus. otherwise men will continue to seek ways to destroy themselves as well as other. open your eyes, it is happening all over the world. it was predicted long before our time and it is still true today. that is the reason He was born to save us from ourselves.

In other words, this has all the signs of Fast & Furious, Episode II. I wouldn’t be surprised to discover someone in Washington was behind it all. After all, there’s no quicker way to disarm a nation and take total control over the population than to stage violence, blame it on firearms, then call for leaders to “do something!” Such calls inevitably end up resulting in gun confiscation, and it’s never too long after that before government genocide really kicks in like we saw with Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao and other tyrants.

Morgan, please apply journalism. You are scaring me. You are not in Britain and should no try to make the comparison. Adjust, be humble and respectful as many have done this coming to this country of hope, freedom & free speech. No person is perfect. Gun control law is not about the gun itself. It should be about preventing the persons behind the gun doing harm. Bad persons will find ways to do harm. Good persons have to find ways to protect them selfs from this harm. Banning guns, is a short cut and not resolving the root cause. Registration who has them might be part of solution by setting the right criteria. This provides balance of the freedom of owning them but applying common sense with the reason & responsibility of ownership. Listen to both sides of the argument, be respectful and don't choose a side as you did in this interview. You can do better then that. Get both sides to agree on a solution and don't put them up against each other. We need common ground. What happened this last weekend is a crime and my respect go out to the families. I can't mentally place myself in their loss and hope I never do. I hope time provides healing for the pain of loss and one day a smile of love thinking of the persons missed. My thoughts are with you as a dad. Morgan, please do better next time...

Look at the facts. More Americans are killed in cities that ban or restrict guns from law abiding citizens. New York City, Detroit, Chicago, LA, DC, etc. Wonder why? Not sure but my brain believes its because criminals are killing criminals and criminals are a little braver with attacks on citizens because they know the citizen is unarmed.

Ok everyone is looking at these so-called assault rifles, ladies and gentlemen don’t believe the media. As tragic as this incident is, it could have been a lot worse without a single shot being fired. This man conducted research and developed rudimentary explosives and incendiary devises. I’m not going to use his name but he is, wrong, sick or evil; whatever terminology you want to use to describe him. Unfortunately he achieved his objective, just watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX….and so on, he is getting his 15 minutes of fame and it is at the cost of others (those he murdered and our society).
Had this person employed his homemade munitions in the theater I suspect the outcome would have been more horrific. Right now the emotions are high and everyone is focused on firearms, had he chosen to use chemistry verses brute force odds are we’d be seeing a different story today, and the casualty count would be much higher. Mayor Bloomberg should worry about New York and their soda pop problems because he is only capable of focusing on what happened and has missed what could have happened. This is a typical knee jerk reaction with little forethought and plays well with the public. My prayers go out to those affected by this senseless act however I am grateful it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

Piers sounded like a ranting lunatic and was very rude as he jammed his agenda down our throats. It would have been more effective if he would have just let the guy speak. See..THIS is why you need to be educated. You have not debunked any of the facts I posted for the simple reason that your logic is very faulty. While you did state that the murder rate has declined...which could be for NUMEROUS reasons other than gun FACT since we're on that beam, the FACT is that scientific inquiry has shown that the variable that correlates the strongest with a decrease in violence is the abortion rate! The higher the abortion rate, the lower the murder rate...anyhow, I have not debunked the fact that our country has, by far!!!, the highest murder rate among industrialized countries. Now, if you want to argue why that is, that's fine. However, come on...common sense. please.

You recently interviewed Justice Scalia, the "originalist", who gives great deference to the language of the 2nd amendment itself, the federalist papers and the meanings the founders would have given the words they used. The words "well regulated" & "militia" appear in the 2nd amendment and the meaning the word "arms" would have had for the founding fathers would have included muskets, not semi-automatic assault weapons. Justice Scalia would not, or should not, allow for the meaning of the word "arms" to evolve over time from that contemplated and understood by the founders.

First and foremost why doesnt the liberal media focus on the victims and there families and stop using cowardly acts to attack law abiding gun owners. You attack my guns and I'll pray for the victims and their families.

In 2006 there were 10,225 firearm murders and in 2010 there were 8,775. Piers' numbers for 2011 were less than that. So let's do the math. Gun ownership is at an all time high and murders are decreasing. This more guns = less murders. That's not removing the crimes were criminal killed criminal or murders in gun free zones. Sorry to rain on you gun hate parade.

CNN's ratings are at an all time low and are continuing to drop. In fact, viewership for all three major news channels has dropped and will continue to do so.. proof positive that most people are tired of all the agendas, all the lies and misleading information being put out by lamestream media. I've tried listening to Piers once or twice, and the guy, like most media types, is a complete jerk to anyone that disagrees with his point of view. There is no room for debate, he won't allow it, and I find that disgusting. He treats them like garbage, and I have no time for someone like that. I offer my condolances to the familes, and those who lost friends and loved ones, and I agree that what happened was and still is a terrible tragedy, but the lamestream media is turning this whole thing into a three ring circus, just like always, and as long as they continue to do so their ratings will continue to plummet. Not that I really care anymore.. in fact, I wouldn't lose any sleep at all if the entire CNN network went under because of their shoddy reporting.

You are the typical liberal. You called a guy on your show for a discussio. As most liberals you were afraid of listening to rational thought so you wouldn't let him talk. When your fellow liberal started running his mouth you let him ramble on and on. Now I know why I avoid your show. I don't know who is farther off the deep end you or Rachel Maddow. It's ok Aamerica is slowly waking up from the media drug we've been given and starting to realize how biased you all are. Thanks for reaffirming what I've always thought that CNN is as crooked as they come.

The 2nd Amendment was not written with these modern guns in mind. No one in America should own assault weapons except the Military. Yes we all have as American's the right to bear protect your family a deer rifle or shot gun, but NOT ASSAULT WEAPONS .....Those are only meant to kill many people at once. John Lott, is completely wrong. More guns do not mean less crime! I need someone to tell me why they need an assault weapon that can have a clip of up to 100 + rounds in it to protect their family? Don't use the 2nd Amendment as your protection. Praying for the families who lost loved ones and those injuried.

There were several members of the military active and retired in theater. If even they had been legally allowed to carry a concealed firearm the outcome could have been much different.

Right...the bullets would've ricocheted off his armor and killed more people...or maybe they would've missed seeing it was dark and killed more people. Anyways, even if one assumed your position was theoretically correct, it doesn't change the fact that our country has a much, much higher murder rate than the rest of the truly civilized world. Explain why that is please.

Have you ever spoken to someone that was shot while wearing a bullet proof vest. If you do. You'll find that most of them had the air knocked out of them or were hit hard enough to feel pain. To change the outcome you would only need a few seconds to gain the upper hand. So but I disagree and believe the outcome would have been different. Part of me believes if guns were allowed then he wouldnt have walked in to that theater and started shooting for fear of his own life. Thus the reason he armored up and went into a room of unarmed people. He was a true tough guy.

Now that I've seen that I'm not the only one offended by his lack of interview skills, I hope that CNN takes note of it and finds a host worth payng attention to again with the same class and character as Larry King. As far as I'm concerned, CNN has a wasted time slot.

machine guns souldn't be sold to any one, and i think law is made up and it is also can be changed, so stop the gun law.
how can a 24 year old kid, buy such a large amount of bullets and all those gears, with out searching him before those payments go throw – why would the stores let these purchases throw and i think these online gun stores should be questioned too, and I think the author of this book should see a doctor himself !

DM why do you keep saying the same old thing.. repeating and repeating the same story does not make it any more true or correct. Your figures maybe correct but they only show one side of the story. The correct story is that crime in the United States has decreased every year for the last 20 years while gun sales have increased in that same time period.

according to the Justice Department’s National Crime Victimization Survey, criminologist Alfred Blumstein of Carnegie Mellon University tells the Associated Press. From 1993 through 2010, the rate of violent crime has declined by a whopping 70 percent: from 49.9 violent crimes per 1,000 persons age 12 or older to only 14.9 per 1,000 in 2010. Half of this decline came between 1993 and 2001. Between 2001 and 2009, violent crime declined at a more modest annual average of 4 percent, but that rate decline jumped to 13 percent in 2010.”

So what were you saying?. Crime rate as reported by the federal government is showing a reduction in overall crime and at the same time people are buying guns at an increasing pace.

You can repeat the muder rate all you want to but, I think the better marker is the overall reduction in crime rate and that is going down. That doesn't make for a very good argument for gun control and I find it intersisting that the FBI really can not point to a specific reason this is happening.......Humm so much for gun control

To have a guest come on your show and be treated the way he was treated by you and the other man makes me wonder how you got the job. I am very saddened about the shooting victoms and there familys. I can't imagine how the familys and loved ones of the victoms must feel. My prayers go out to them. What I don't understand is why when something like this happens all we hear is that we need stricter gun laws. What you and people like you don't understand is if they wasn't guns the people that wants to commit such a hedious crime would commit them in some other way that would propably be worse. You gave the stastics of the people killed in the US each year with guns I wish you and all the other people like you would look at the stastics on alcohol related deaths in the US each year and you would find out that the number is far greater. A lot of the gun deaths is also alcohol related, but you and the people like you don't complain about alcohol. The familys and love ones of alcohol related deaths miss there loved ones too.

I actually agree with the position of Dershowitz and Morgan. HOWEVER I was extremely disappointed with how Piers Morgan conducted this interview. He usually interrupts his guests a lot and I have learned to accept that as part of his "charm" but his behavior last night was rude and unprofessional. You cannot have an invited guest on your show who you attack incessantly and don't allow to complete any questions! The fact is that a lot of Americans agree with Lott and as a viewer I was interested in finding out more about his perspective, but I was not allowed that opportunity as a viewer because Lott barely got a word in. Piers knew Lott's opinions before he was invited on the show.

DM Wow, when I go and look up the numbers it doesn't add up to your numbers. In looking up the annual homicides by and means, I only get 4.67 per 100,000 not 5.22 that you keep quoting. Oh I'm so sorry you did say that was from 2008 which I show as 5.35 per 100,000 oops. the numbers don't add up.

But what I find of interest is that from 2008 to 2010 the numbers drops from 5.35 per 100,000 to a 4.67 per 100,000 and this is for homicides by any means not just gun deaths.

So do we really have a gun problem as you so put it, or are you trying to use your numbers to scare people and make it look like we have a gun problem because either of our numbers are not GUN only numbers but total deaths from all sources.

So the actual number of gun deaths are below 4.67 per 100,000 and the actual crime rate is declining and has been for 20 years, which does not show that we have a gun problem at least as you would like to show it. Are we the United States higher than other countries yes we are, do we have a larger contiguious population yes we do, does the United
States have a different culture in that we are more independent and rebelious yes we are. Those differences alone will make out numbers come out higher but it does not mean we have a gun problem.

I agree with Piers and Mayor Bloomberg and Michael Moore. Something must be done about guns. There is absolutely NO reason why anyone should be able to walk in a store and purchase the weapons like that monster that did that. There is no reason why anyone, except the military would need such weapons. IT is ridiculous. This country is nuts. If Mr. Obama does not stand up for what he believes and say that we must ban assault weapons, then I am not going to vote for him. That's it.

I think we need to outlaw ALL Action Movies because they encourage this type of behavior, and apparently TEACHES people how to plot a mass murder. Maybe you need to have a Conversation With Michael Moore, about it.. Maybe Movie Directors should be accomplishes to these murders, at the rate your rational is going. OH, and Bloomberg did not say the military should have weapons either, ONLY the Police. MY COUNTRY IS NOT NUTS....If you don't like it here, YOU TOO have the FREEDOM to MOVE.
