Coming up this evening, "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore for his trademark brand of candid commentary, and human perspective.
Joining Piers Morgan for an exclusive interview that comes on the heels of Friday's deadly movie theater shooting in Aurora, CO, the 58-year-old is frustrated by what he views as the selfish nature of Americans:
"We have to see that we're a part of each other, and we have to take care of each other. The reason why they have universal health care in Canada and Britain, these other places? Because they believe if one suffers, everybody suffers," he tells the "Piers Morgan Tonight" host. "That is not our mentality, our mentality is 'I got mine, you get yours, and the hell with everybody else.'"
A decade since "Bowling for Columbine" – his groundbreaking 2002 documentary film exploring the causes for the massacre at Columbine High School – Moore is disheartened by a lack of progress:
"If people would just rise up and say 'Dammit, this is not the America I'm going to live in. This is too great of a country to let this happen again. I am not going to let this happen again.' And I am not going to come on another one of these damn TV shows either, after the next one of these shootings, Piers," he declares. "I'm sick of this. I refuse it. I refuse to live in a country like this, as I said before, and, I'm not leaving. So therefore, what am I going to do? It's got to change."

Another wrongful comparison of the US with other nations.
I agree. They always put all these countries and try to compare. I'll give you a comparison. Mexico has had over 67,000 gun related homicides since 2006. That's a country with a third of the population of the United States. Here's another thing, in mexico, firearms are illegal to anybody that isn't a federal police officer. So a country where it is illegal for anybody to own a firearm has had over 67,000 fire arm related homicides in the last 6 years. You know why? Because in Mexico, not only do police officers own guns, also all the "bad guys". In a country where gun ownership is illegal, the only people that are left without a firearm are law abiding citizens, cause everybody else, including the people that want to do harm to you, will own a gun.
In the United States, do you think if gun ownership was illegal, that gang members wouldn't own a gun? Of course they would. There would be numerous ways to get a gun illegally just like there is today, just like you can get drugs, which are illegal. So in the end, the only people without guns would be law abiding citizens. It's that simple.

So what's the difference between comparing the US to Mexico than to the other countries mentioned? Because Mexico is a third world country? That's not even the point, the point I was trying to make is that in a country where firearms are illegal, there are still over 67,000 deaths in the past 6 years because people that want to kill, are going to kill. It's that simple. In a country where firearms are illegal, everybody owns a gun EXCEPT law abiding citizens. You think gang violence is going to go down? Hell no, because they will still own guns. You think making drugs illegal has stopped the distribution of drugs? No, the difference is, instead of law abiding citizens selling the drugs, gang members are the ones selling drugs. If you really want to do drugs, you can buy drugs right now, it isn't difficult. If guns were illegal, law abiding citizens wouldn't own a gun, but that guy that wants to do harm to you will. Those gang members killing each other will. The guy that is going to rob the liquor store will. The guy going into your house to rob you will.
Why don't we just call it how it is. The guy that shot the theater up is a psychopath. There is a firearm in the United States per every U.S. citizen. Yet, there is only 12,000 deaths to guns a year. 300,000,000 fire arms and only 12,000 deaths.
Nobody's seriously proposing *total* gun illegality in this country, just (1) assault weapons and (2) large capacity magazines for semi-automatics and hand guns. Both Morgan and Moore *clearly* elucidated those points.
And regarding Mexico, the peasants there have been targeted over the years by both police (at times), and in particular, by drug cartels who (1) supply a constant flow of illegal drugs here, and (2) are equipped with weapons supplied by us. They are second to us in gun deaths, but due largely to the interchange between us of drugs and guns.

Simplistically, a boxer cannot punch without fists, a child cannot colour without a crayon, and a shooting massacre cannot happen without ease of access to ammunition and weaponry. Why is everyone so surprised when incidents like these happen on a regular basis in the US. It says a lot about a country when someone wearing a costume with a gun can go and kill numerous people in a theater, and they ban COSTUMES. Maybe if that 6 year old had an assault weapon in hand, some defense would have been provided. The right to bare arms made sense in the 1800's, but not now. At this time and place in history it's a little like closing the barn door after the horses have run out. Your country is fundamentally founded with your 2nd Ammendment-the right to bear arms. Your culture is one where it is OK to carry a weapon concealed or otherwise. I have never understood this need for guns and I never will. Here where I live (and yes it's Canada) I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO OWNS A GUN!! That is the honest to God's truth. I wouldn't even know where to purchase one even. I totally agree with what Michael and piers are saying about gun control in America. To address any issue people may have with Piers, in this case it doesn't really matter what he did before or where he's hated because he's touching a issue in where his history has no correlation and honestly he's just being logical, in my opinion. The only thing I'd like to point out is the argument that if you put a stricter gun control policy people will get it anyway, well I feel like that's saying terrorists want to bomb people anyway so lets not improve airport security. Its true that people will always find a way to get guns but with stronger gun control laws(i think they should be banned all together) it'll bring down the number of gun related crimes, even if its by a little its worth it. Through this mentality, overtime gun crime will go down more a more.

I don't see any problem with comparisons, if they are made correctly. I believe Mr. Moore's comparison with other countries was made to ask, "is there a better way." We hurt ourselves believing we, the USA, are the only country or people capable of a good ideas.
Of comparisons, to clarify, it is legal to own a gun in Mexico. A major issue with Mexico's problem with gun violence, and I am not a criminologist, is enforcement. It is too easy to purchase illegally (mostly from the USA) and there is not a sufficient infrastructure in place to police the problem.
Being a wealthy country, the USA is capable of so many things. And if we are to move forward, I will ask, who has made the proper comparison? You or Mr. Moore?
I just came back from Las Vegas and saw the MOB Attraction.
What struck me was that alcohol Prohibition was the centerpiece which made many immensely wealthy. Many of those used their money to further their goals in Organized Crime. Prohibition back fired on the US Government. After Prohibition was lifted Organized Crime was awash in money, organized and opened up business in Las Vegas.
If guns were banned then the same thing would happen: black market gun operations would florish. The bad guys would be armed, crime bosses would get wealthy and another subculture would form this time by guns, not alcohol.
Banning guns will not stop gun sales. The only people without guns will be your law abiding citizens. I don't want that nor will I support an attack on the Second Amendment.
I suggest that Piers Morgan return to his country of origin as soon as possible.

Piers Morgan didn't make the statements about Aurora; Michael Moore did. P.Morgan simply provided a platform for the guest to air his views. If you didn't like what the guest had to say, turn your t.v. off. This is still a country with free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Bottom line..... When we start punishing the criminals "for real" maybe the "bad guys" would take things more seriously. I am happy to say I have a conceal and carry and would not hesitate to use my weapon if I was in fear for my life. . I also would like to make note that I have been property trained. I would also not hesitate to use a heavy frying pan (which is a weapon). Let's say someone broke into my house in the middle of the night and I was being attacked. How long do you think it would take the police to arrive? In some cases, too long. Again, let's get back to the root of the problem. Start punishing criminals for the crimes they commit! I saw those stats, but you also didn't understand what he was trying to say. You do have to punish the criminals, and the U.S. does a horrible job at it. Why is it that someone that can commit mass murder can take years to prosecute? Yes he's in prison just living it up on our tax dollars, why is he allowed to do that? Why are these people taken to a "correctional facility" when they belong in a freaking dungeon. Murderers and pedophiles don't deserve a chance to see the light of day ever again. Why is our justice system so lame? When I traveled to Singapore I was told not to worry to walk around at midnight, that it's really secure. You know why? Make a federal law that if you murder somebody, you get the death penalty. I enjoy going to the shooting range, hunting, and gun safety. I also believe in the world we live in today, and there is a need for gun & ammo monitoring (control). There is always room for improvements to make our society/communities safer & better for all.
Drug test for psychosomatic drugs to go with background checks for guns, and instead of every 5 years with concealed weapons permit, every 2 years and last but not least when background check and applications for shooting ranges are "rejected" they must be reported to the local police station/or appropriate dept..
Create a database for all states to check "rejected" permits so no one can skip to another state ...
If a few improvements stop one atrocity or killing of our families, friends or neighbors then so be it.
Last but not least... who in the heck needs automatic weapons. This should stay in the military bottom line!

I believe the second amendment is intented to have an armed citizenshp to protect against foreign invasion. Although, the amendment goes on to say these rights shall not be infringed. I feel that most Americans i know own guns to preserve the democracy against a government that has acquired too much power then, we are back to Kings ruling the country while the rich get richer and the peasants finally overthrew monarchy,dictatorship, communism, etc. No government no matter how powerful, corrupt, controled by those with wealth and resources and connections, can exploit its own citizens if they all have the right to bear arms. If the US government started killing its innocent civillians at random,(as in Syria) our citizens would respond with a complete regim change, compliments of citizens with a legally owned firearm.

The trick is to find a fair balance for gun laws, and yes these things do need to be reviewed often to make sure they are fair to our rights and our safety. In 2010 there was a gun massacre with 12 people shot dead. Clearly not prevented by draconian gun bans and confiscations following the Hungerford massacre in the 80s, and the Dunblane massacre in the 90s.

You really should try to understand what you clearly don't know. I carry (legal permit) a Glock 21 (45 Calber ACP) with a spring guide laser sight that is dead on at 25 meters. Even with body armor, the force of a 45 caliber round can break ribs and/or knock a person to the ground. I can't help but beleive that had a trained CCW person(s)would not have made a positive difference in this horrible shooting inicident. Yovu really should educate yourself about a subject before making ignorant statements. The people who knows about firearms will never be understood by those with the antigun liberal mondset. There are simple facts that back this up. Kevlar is not magical.
The shooter's level of protection has been misrepresented in the media. The sales receipt that was released revealed that his vest cost less than $100. Body armor vests (Kevlar and the like) cost $600 to $1200. What he had was a utility vest – used for equipment storage only – it provides ZERO ballistic protection. A few armed citizens would have taken him out very quickly.
Another case of mass shooter choosing a location where he knew the victims would be unarmed due to a gun ban in the cinema.
How about doing some research. Nothing he was wearing was bullet proof. It is illegal to purchas these on line. He had on a Tactical vest. It is not bullet proof and is just used to carry equipment.
No one could have taken him out because of all the bullet proof protection he was wearing. It would have been like the bank robber in LA that was wearing all the protection and using this type of weapon – they had a very difficult time with him. He just kept firing.

People were so caught off guard in that theatre. Lights off, Movie in the midst of violence scene most people assumed the shooter was part of the movie. He then threw tear gas into the audience confusing people even more. I am afraid he had the element of suprise which would render anyone in the theatre having a gun absolutely useless. The real issue is how do we prevent assualt rifles and mega ammo clips from being sold with little or no restrictions. Had is assault rifle not jammed I am sure we would have more fatalites than just 12.

This is the most silly thing I've read. Bad parenting caused this and causes every problem in America. Required licenses to have children and monitor families with children to ensure they are doing a good job. Let teachers report kids who act out in a violent or unstable manner and allow them to remove those children from their classes until the issue is corrected AT HOME, BY THE PARENT. If they parents screw up a kid, lock them up, and abort the full grown kid via a hangman's noose. That will fix all our problems real quick and no more banning anything.

machine guns are all but impossible to obtain it takes a minimum of 6 months to obtain one and that's if you already have all the permits. 6000 rounds of ammo is not that unusual of a purchase. when i buy ammo i usually buy around 1000 rounds at a time because it is much more cost effective and it costs less to ship, often they give a discount at that volume.
It would have to be organized because he would and probably did buy from a variety of dealers who are communicating with one another. If there was a place to post who is buying what, people would probably complain that his privacy was being violated.

As I read a few of these comments I was struck by the polarization this tragedy in Aurora has once again awakened regarding gun control. "The Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm to use for traditionally lawful purposes, such as defending oneself within their home or on their property." This is not a right anyone wants to take away. I believe the Founding Fathers never intented the 2nd Amendment to be used as a way for the gun manufacturers to continue to produce, market and sell automatic assualt weapons and their corresponding ammunition to the general public. With annual revenue in the billions of dollars and the strongest lobbying presence in Congress, it is no wonder the politicians won't bring up stricter gun control laws. Sadly, removing the ability to purchase such firearms doesn't mean there will never be a deranged person seeking to kill innocent people. However, stopping of the sale of these weapons and their corresponding ammunition will make such a murderer's intended task that much harder to accomplish. Destroying our 2nd Amendment rights are not at stake. Could one argue that it is someone's freedom in America to commit mass murder? The idea is as ludicrous as the sale of automatic assault rifles.

The 2nd amendment is not just to protect us from bad people but from our OWN GOVERNMENT ! Our fore fathers had just placed their lives on the line by signing the Declaration and were given the Death Penalty in Absentia by the British Monarchy, the King..... I appreciate your point of view. We are in the same age bracket so I do understand the Nixon scandals and the Pledge of Allegiance being recited in school. The 2nd Ammendment information I was quoting came from the Supreme Court in 2008 and 2010. They issued two Second Amendment decisions. "In District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm, unconnected to service in a militia and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home." I am not misquoting or subjected to misinformation by the media. If limits or controls are set on this particular portion of gun ownership, how would it be restricting the ability to enable your rights as an American to buy/own weapons? I have watched the news, like everyone else, and have understood his weapons to include an Smith & Wesson M&P15 which is, in the broader class of AR-15 SEMI Automatic Assault Rifles, a Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and finally, a pump action 12 guage shot gun. Additionally, the 100 round drum of ammunition was mentioned. I assume you meant that I was uninformed and misquoted the weaponry because I said automatic instead of semi-automatic. Forgive the misquote of nomenclature, however, the capacity of human death toll from these weapons is sufficient enough to warrant stricter controls on purchase. The necessity of restrictions on the general population's right to bear arms is not meant to eliminate our 2nd Amendment rights but to deliver appropriate limitations on the sale and purchase of such weapons whose sole use is to kill human beings. I appreciate there are multiple points of view on this topic, but to label my comment as uniformed is incorrect. Asking for restrictions on the purchase of certain types of weapons infringes on no one. Military use of these weapons during active duty while in a war zone is one thing...to legally purchase these weapons and ammunition at yoru local gun shop or Walmart is another. Where was the oversight? Where was the responsibilty of everyone from the credit card company seeing all of these purchases on a bill, to those stores who sold the weapons, to the University's heightened sense of awareness that a potential problem existed with this man, to the manufacturers who continually lobby for the general population to be within their 2nd Amendment rights to own such weaponry? To defend our homes, to hunt for animals, to protect yourself in a dire emergency, to defend in Militia environments...2nd Amendment. To be able to sell and purchase killing machines serves one purpose, making money.
Why don't we ever hear about harsher punishment for the obviously guilty? Why do we call the guilty person a suspect? I have asked local reporters but they are not interested in this question so far. My take on why gun sales have gone up in Colorado since the shooting, just as they did after Obama's election apparently according to Moore, is that people who were thinking about buying one run out to do it while they can, afraid that tighter gun control may be introduced.
Gun sales AND requests for concealed carry are both WAY up in Colorado. Every tragedy like in Aurora happens in "gun free zones" – against defenseless unarmed people, where they "feel" safe, but they are NOT safe.

I own firearms. I own them for personal protection, sure; I would love to never be in a situation that requires them, but they're there. Better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it. I love going shooting. It allows me to hone an aspect of myself that does have real world applications, as much as people would like to ignore it. It also is cathartic, and very stress relieving. But why I would own several guns?
They're beautiful. In much the same way as a car can be beautiful, personal firearms are a wedding of form and function that inspires, intimidates, and intrigues. You can almost tell the ideals of the manufacturer by the way the entire piece fits together. Many collectors share these ideals.
Unfortunately, I live now in the wrong era of firearm design. Every country's standard rifle is a M16 variant reciever with a collapsible stock, 4-point RAS rails, chambered in 5.56mm NATO. Horrifying as war is, true ingenuity and artistry comes out of conflict. In WWII, every country had their own firearms, and each had it's strengths and weaknesses. No two of them functioned exactly alike. Each had their role, and their charm. It always saddens me when people can only see that a gun is a weapon, and can't look past that to the ingenuity and thought that goes into each design.
Oh well. I suppose you can keep saying we're afraid. Then again, you seem to be afraid of us.

Legislation of developing and developed nations differs. the 2nd Amendment speaks to the needs of a developing nation, which the USA is no longer. I was appropriate for the time of its conception with the limited law enforcement. Today that is not the case.
In addition the fact at the time of the drafting of the 2nd Amendment, guns were limited in round capacity, and the ability to allow rapid reload and firing. Accordingly a limitation of the fire power that civilians can own, is not a modification of the 2nd Amendment, but in keeping with its intent.
Law enforcement in the modern world has no duty to protect the citizenry. The Supreme Court ruled that.
Your argument on the capacity of a flintlock musket carries little weight. It could very easily be stated that the Second Amendment encourages civilian ownership of top of the line military hardware, as that is what flintlock muskets were at the time.
You are asking WHY? it is because the NRA owns America. They own both republicans and democrats. They have paid campaigns of both parties. So nobody dares say anything that would contradict the NRA!!! That's why!

Of the vast majority of gun related deaths each year, few are accidents. Does a person accidentally get drunk and drive? Does a person accidentally text and drive? Does a person accidentally speed excessively? Since there are more motor vehicle related deaths than gun deaths, should we not make vehicle illegal? Or maybe make vehicular homicides relating to one the above a felony murder charge? Take away guns and people will find other ways to harm others.
Given the USA has the following death rates per capita higher than the UK, does it appear something may need to be looked at:
Gun Deaths 3300% higher
Fatal Car Accidents 1000%
Construction related deaths 1000%

Being from the UK and now living in Florida im 100% with the right to bear arms, even the police in the UK are unarmed and look at the riots there last year, would that have carried on had people been armed? NO.

Sarah, Just as the government is trying to tax sales on each item we purchase over the internet they should be able to police the amount of assault weapons and ammo people purchase and use it as a red flag. It is not THAT easy.....as usual there is much info left out. For instance....most gun sales on the internet are through dealers....and unless the weapon is 50 years or and you have a C & R license ( C & R stands for CURIO and RELIC meaning 50+ years or older – which you are open to inspection at your home, if you have the license and it is NOT to buy and sell the weapons..They are for your own personal collction. And if you notice...not many old weapons being used in these tragic crimes we read about ) other than these firearms, if you buy a new or slightly used one...it has to be sent to a dealer in your state...who does a background check on you....just as if you were buying it from him. SInce he is transferring it toYOU...he is required to do the background check...it is NOT an option.
Now if you buy from a individual, if it is a pistol again...it has to be sent to a DEALER....but this does not happen a GREAT DEAL as there is the shipping charge, which it has t be sent OVERNIGHT...and the dealer you will pick it up from is going to charge you a fee anywhere from $45 up to $60 just for filling out the paper work. Now, between the overnght fee and the dealers fee.....many weapons, and MOST pistols will not be sold this way, as it is cheaper to buy one in your own state. Rifles and shotguns...I am not sure of each indiv state law....but most of the classifieds I see say F2F only. Which means they do not want to deal with mailing and fees and this acronym stands for FACE to FACE.
SO it can happen...but is NOT as easy as it may seem. NOw ammo is a different story...and many dealers want o sell lots of 500 to 1000 at a time as bulk pricing is cheaper for the customer and customers would RATHER purchse this much at once, but I never have because it is still expensive. The reason for this actually, is a short term SHORTAGE of ammo available at local gun stores due to the multiple wars we have been invoilved with, as ammo manufact are or have been busy making ammo for the government. ALso when Obama was elected the prices went WAY up and have never really recovered since then. The price has come down, but only somewhat....also...there is no more military surplus to just shoot for fun, called plinking...shooting tim cans, paper targets, milk jugs and such.

I just heard Michael Moores interpretation on the 2nd amendment. I think the 2nd amendment's purpose was not specifically to allow people to bare arms, I think it was set up as a self check that if the government created by the founding fathers becomes unjust, the people have the right to take up arms and overthrow their oppressors. My point is this, I think it was an extension od what was stated in the Declaration of Independence that a person that has the ability to take action has the responsibility to take action if under an unfair/ extreme rule. My over arching point is this, the anti-federalist wanted to make sure that people could rise up if threatened by foreign or own government, not to bare arms with no checks on them.
So, just how does a society rise-up against its government if it not guaranteed the right to keep and bear arms? Keep in mind, guns were at the forefront of technology back in that time. One need not look far in the news headlines to see examples of what our forefathers feared ( Syria).

Although, this isn’t what my post was about to begin with. My post was about excluding labels such as LIBERALISM. Let’s just take out the whole liberal aspect of this because that whole word and concept is being misused and abused. Obviously, from the example I just gave, both parties are liberal as they want the FREEDOM to do what they want, when they want and hopefully according to legal, social standards. When I say legal, social standards, I mean, ok, fine, you want to carry a gun, go right ahead but you don't need a rocket launcher, and an oozie, armor piercing bullets and a ballistic helmet. Not true. In much of the Middle East – more often not; in many African countries – more often true.
Almost all Iraqis owned one or more firearms many of which were fully automatic AK-47s. Was it the firearms that caused problems for our military forces or was it the abundance of IED’s and homicide bombers that forestalled a shortened military incursion into Iraq. No, guns will be of little to no use against a powerful military that also wields an equally powerful air force.

CHNO, I'm a veteran and i will tell you first hand that the military could not stand up to the entirety of citizens, Christians maybe jk ..and the only argument that i need to make would be well...when government corruption/take over is made widely public..do you think all those soldiers of the armed forces would let there own family's be abused and herded like cattle and that they would actually take part themselves in doing this. Hell F&^*ing No..they would go AWOL like a lot of today's soldiers do when the army tells them they can't even go home to take care of their family members in times of family crisis's. Its truly ridiculous and I've seen captain's in the army locked up for just that. I was personally thrown in a mexican prison because after i was tragically injured in a motorcycle accident(Leg shattered)..i was cut off from medication after just 2 months and i was hospitalized for 34 days...i told my leadership(the people you are suppose to trust with your life) that i needed medication and i was denied and in agonizing pain, so i decided to self medicate and help myself because at that point you realize that you have to do things for yourself to make life easier, and no i'm not a drug user or a pill head. I went from being the most physically fit soldier in my battalion to the most immobile one in a flash and was left to suffer in prison for a failed UA which i admitted to doing and was honest that i had to help myself due to my leaderships lack of morality..so long story short, I was screwed by the military and so were many others around me. If you ever have the chance to experience the military, most will come to understand that at the end of the day it is JUST ANOTHER JOB. If you plan on getting F-ed in the A by having your pay missing every month and not being able to have time to even fix the problem or having to be led by people whom you are positive are far less intelligent than yourself, than go join the Army..so what i am saying is that at the first hint of a government take-over, a good bit of soldiers will gather whatever weaponry than can find and take off to help their civilian families. That's what i would have done and i was an excellent soldier with awards, integrity and loyalty to any soldier that deserved it. Screw you Piers!

I spent the better part of last year in San Antonio (Texas). Most morning newscasts led with reports of knife attacks in local bars. Man's inhumanity to man is all around us and etched in history. Gun control works. If America is the "greatest country on earth", it should try to do as well as its vicious old colonial enemy.

Does the mental health background check really catch anyone? There's no database containing mental health records is there? HIPPA laws protect that info. IWe need a better screening system.
Mental Health is truly unable to help in the situation with the mass shooting in Colorado. You cannot force individuals to take medications unless they are assessed as danger to self and others. The day of the killing, he would have been assessed and placed on a 5150 hold. However, if he says the correct things in the hospital, he will be released within 72 hours. So what next? 99% of people, who kill, other than depression and forms of rage, do not have a mental illness as classified by the DSM-IV. What is important is to determine what our culture creates that people feel they have the right to take the lives of others. There seems no respect for life, human or any other. There seems no respect for our environment. I believe this has a lot to do with so many killings in the US
This would be true if Holmes was actually diagnosed with a mental illness but because everything was premeditated, he knew what he was doing. And the way health care is set up in the States, he wouldn't have received the proper medical attention anyway because he wouldn't have been able to afford it. It's easy for someone like Holmes to fall through the cracks because of the easy access to guns in combination with a poor health care system. The U.S. needs to clean itself up.
I think we should have stricker laws on owning a gun and buying amo. Have the gun owner go through a through psychiatric evaluation several times before issuing a license. Just as we have our teens take a driving course before we allow them to drive. I am getting more and more disappointed in living in America as it is. Why can't we live a peaceful full life without some jerk ending it prematurately?

Thanks to her we now have a concealed carry law. She testified to the other state legistators that if she had been able to bring in her gun in she would have been able to stop that nut and it would have saved a lot of lives, including her parents. During the debate on the concealed carry law, she went to each of legislator as they were seated at their chamber desks and pointed at each and every one of them with two hands held together as if holding a gun and put it RIGHT IN THIER FACE. They got to feel what it's like to have no place to go with someone about to blow their head off. It was very effective because that's the way it REALLY is. Too bad the stupid liberals all over the country don't have the same demonstration done to them. My advice...get a gun. The criminals and druggies have theirs and they will use them with impunity, while law abiding citzens will use them in self defense of themselves or thier fmilies.

You're edgy, I get it. But the intent of the forefathers could just as easily be interpreted as "the citizenry should have access to top of the line military grade weaponry." People make the flintlock argument, forgetting that those were the pinnacle of warfare at the time. Remember, this is the same country that had it's military open fire on college students. I really suggest that Piers Morgan work on his social etiquette. As most educated people know, there is such a thing as "turn taking" in conversation. I speak, then you speak. You speak, then I speak. The manner in which Piers Morgan relentlessly talks over people when they're trying to talk is quite offensive. When ever Mr. Morgan engages in his relentless rant and continues to talk over his guest speaker, I simply just switch channels
He and guys like Hannity do this on occasion, but yesterday with David Kopel it was only after Kopel continued to expound after stating, "Honestly Piers, I think this is the wrong night to be doing this and I really wish you'd waited to have this segment until after the funerals" that PM broke in to reply. He then allowed Kopel to continue.
You can call it "heated rhetoric", but it happens often on talk shows over 'heated issues.'
Sadly, I just watched Piers and Michael Moore; I'll never get back that wasted hour of my life.

I accidently came across your show and stayed in tune for the past two nights because of your Bloomberg interview and Michael Moore's appearance. A few years ago, there was a push for more gun control. There was a list of things that were not going to be allowed on any civilian owned firearm. The classic example was a barrel shroud. When asked what that was, the lead proponent for the gun control legislation responded, "I think it's the shoulder-thing that goes up."
Ummm... you mean a collapsible stock? Is that what you're banning? Because a barrel shroud is a piece that goes around the barrel, allowing a gripping surface that is protected from barrel heat.
Laws that affect everyone need to be made from an educated point of view, and I find the entirety of Congress to be uneducated, bickering children. Learn something about firearms. Go to a range; many have rental pieces, and fairly reasonable ammunition prices. If you learn how to use a gun, you will not be afraid of them in law-abiding citizens' hands anymore.

I think Piers has a personal reason for wanting no guns in America. He knows that he is a nervewracking pompus ass when he starts puffing up about what's wrong with the US. He knows that someday he will start ranting and ranting and ranting about our faults and someone in the room will realize that nothing else matters in the world if only they never have to hear this ranting again. He knows it will be to his advantage if that person isn't armed when the realization hits.

I love how moore explained how many firearms there are in America, and such. Then asked why a person in a suburb needs a pistol. Crime affects everyone. Every single American has a right to self defense, most violent crimes involving weapons are not done by your concerned citizen. Banning firearms will not prevent crimes being committed by firearms, it will just limit the average law abiding citizens right to defend themselves. As for the Colorado shooting, its tragic, but banning firearms is not the answer. I'd also like to point out, a "assualt rifle"by defintion is a weapon that is fully auto-selective fire(IE military grade m4 rifles that fire burst and semi) what was used was a semi auto rifle.

Michael Moore did a wonderful job tonight discussing gun violence in America and also discussing how politicians do absolutely nothing about it because they're too afraid of the NRA and gun obsessed Americans. Politicians should never be afraid to stand tall and talk bravely and honestly about gun violence. Seeing paranoid stupid people post how they love their guns more than they care about the victims of the massacre and other gun violence victims is exactly why politicians need to do something, be the responsible sensible adults and do something to make your citizens safer and protect them from irresponsible, unstable, dangerous stupid people.

I'm getting tired of trigger happy people stating a century ago crime was at an all time low without gun laws. Well of course it was because the WORLD WASN'T AS POPULATED A CENTURY AGO – DUH!!! Think about it. In addition, guns weren't as technologically advanced a century ago either, compared to what they are now. So the whole century ago in comparison to present day has been refuted and that argument can be dropped now because I'm living in this century – not the past. Until politicians start boycotting the NRA, gun laws won't get changed.
A lot of liberals post about the ease of obtaining a gun easily. But I haven't heard them mention how much easier it is to obtain the exact same thing illegally.
I mentioned politicians as a whole without singling out a particular party and/or political belief because it just gets messy.
I can take the word “liberalism” right out of context and use it on both sides of the coin.

The other party can say “I should have the LIBERTY to carry a gun.”
So let’s just take out the whole liberal aspect of this because that whole word and concept is being misused and abused. Obviously, from the example I just gave, both parties are liberal as they want the FREEDOM to do what they want, when they want and hopefully according to legal, social standards. I don’t care how hard or easy it is for guns to be obtained legally or illegally or if it’s mentioned by a particular political party – not the issue.
My concern is gun control should be a MORAL obligation on EVERY politician’s agenda regardless of party association and/or political belief because my question right now is: What is so UNITED about the United States? I don’t see any unity at all.

Colt M1911A1 (.45 ACP autoloading semi-automatic pistol, 1911)
Browning Auto-5 (12-gauge tube-fed semi-automatic shotgun, 1905)
Browning M2 (.50 BMG belt-fed machine gun, 1921)
These are just a few designed by John Moses Browning. I can find more if you want, but the difference in technology is honestly minimal.
Sorry Piers, I am now watching the Bloomberg interview, which is also good, and reemphasizes my point. Should "the people" place their trust in the Government on what do to with guns on a two-year election cycle (at least with respect to the House)? Should our "rights" depend on the political whims of the moment? That might be okay for piddly things like selective tax credits, but the right to gun ownership is fundamentally different. That problem, the distrust of our current government, is an example of "why" Americans might be resistant, in a very general sense, to major changes in gun laws.
Somebody I used to know taught me how to load a magazine and pull a trigger and he thought it was the best idea to own as many guns as possible because the "government" was to blame for everything. Irony of it all, he was a Caucasian American born in the US...and grduated from UCLA.I personally thought he was "nuts". After what happened in Aurora....I'm glad I dodged that bullet and is not dating that guy anymore! Ha!
But on a more serious note....let US continue to pray for the souls departed from this tragedy and their families...

I find it extremely aggravating that as a society we have gotten to the point where we must blame and punish everyone else for the actions of one; when people run stop signs people cry out for stop lights, and when people drive drunk and injure or kill someone, we demand to know where they got the alcohol from so that we can chastise them as well. People seem to think that banning something automatically makes everything better; if people drink too much lets ban alcohol, if they die from drugs lets ban whatever new drug seems to be at fault. Growing up the problem was gangs tagging, and as a result adults had to wonder the isles of stores begging someone to come and open the cages that were meant to keep kids from stealing paint, and although this inconvenienced and irritated law abiding people, it had no effect on the amount of tagging. Politicians love to say how we should not be afraid of terrorist and that we should go about our daily lives as normal; however politicians these days are the cause of more distress than any terrorist group in this country. People should understand that while you may believe that banning guns or creating a national registry will prevent future gun crime, the fact is that criminals don’t abide by the law (hence the label of criminal), and while those of us that do abide by the law are being harassed by new rules and regulations, criminals will still be out doing whatever they like and ruining others’ lives in the process. Something we should all remember is that while you may favor a ban on guns, smoking, drugs, fast food, coke, violent movies or any of the other numerous things people rally against these days, at some point the banning or restricting of items will eventually target something you care about. The idea that banning semi-auto guns or so called assault weapons will make us safer seems highly unlikely, even the London police said recently that despite all the expense and their efforts, things like busses are still highly vulnerable to bombings. These news agencies don’t seem to understand is that while 6000 rounds of 50 caliber ammo is a lot, the same amount of 22 ammo isn’t that much; and where should we draw the line on magazine capacity, because though my guns aren’t high capacity guns I can reload awfully fast, because that’s how I was taught.

This argument unfortunately has no merit as neither of these items are being argued against their restriction, and whether you know it or not, many people collect tanks and other weapons for historical reasons; even though they more often than not never fire a single live round of ammunition trough them. Plus machine guns and explosives are not available to the general public and have not been for many years, people must get permission to purchase and own these items after undergoing stringent background checks and being approved by the local police chief or sheriff. People who refer to weapons grade plutonium have simply been watching too much TV; the vast majority of people in the world wouldn’t know it if they saw it, nor would people have any idea of what to do with it if they had some. With all due respect, this makes as much sense as Mr. Moors saying that it takes fifteen minutes to load a musket; the vast amount of people who died from the founding of this country up until the muskets replacement goes to show that muskets are not the simply weapon described by those who are trying to push an agenda with lies that the second amendment applies only to militias (since there are so many of those still around) and that semi-auto is the same as machine gun.

I loved last night's show. Michael Moore is the best and many very relevent issues were raised. When you listen to the stats with regards to killings in the U.S. compared to other countries, this should be the proof that the likes of Senator McCain said he needed to be convinced that access to weapons is a causal factor in the number of killings. Sadly, some people are just not going to be convinced no matter what evidence is presented. Michael questioned why the U.S. has such a high number of killings, what makes the U.S. different from other countries, some of which have had a violent past (e.g. Germany)? These are a very compelling questions and I thought about them while trying to get to sleep last night. I tried to think of factors that are unique to the U.S. that might explain this and came up with the following. Michael mentioned that fear is a factor and I agree but from where does this fear originate? I can only guess. I think racism is a factor for as much as the U.S. has made great strides with regards to racism, it still exists. This contributes to fear but it also leads to high levels of anger from all races. There is a wide economic divide right now and that adds to feelings of resentment and anger. There is also a mind set that although not unique to the U.S., is more deeply rooted with Americans. This has to do with the view that democracy is to be protected at any and all cost. That is one of the reasons weapons are seen to be a right and of course accounts for why the U.S. seems to be almost constantly at war. Finally, Americans appear to be unwilling to listen to 'outsider's' views and advise. They see themselves as living in the greatest country in the world and therefore how dare any 'foreigner' think he or she knows better than they. Piers, you have experienced this yourself. Look at how many viewers have taken offence to your views on gun control and told you to go back to Britain. There is a level of ignorance here. In what other country do we hear the term "redneck"? I would like to know how Americans define that term and how many of them fall into that category.
I am disappointed in the tone of some of these responses to Michael Moore and Piers Morgan. I think Mr. Moore raised an important question, "Why are we so abusive to one another?" What is the result of all of this rancor and animosity that is so pervasive? I came to this posting in hopes to find thoughtful people addressing this question. I pray that Mr. Morgan continues to explore this issue. I think his citizenship is immaterial; he is human and we share the planet with him and he with us. We need to figure out what keeps driving our collective abusive behavior.

The tone of so many responses demonstrates the very point I tried to make in my response and that is that Americans are intolerant of other points of view and strike out in a nasty way against them. Ironically,in our attempt to understand why there is so much violence in the U.S., some of the causes of this violence are evident in many of the responses, namely, anger, fear and intolerance. To the viewers who think Piers should go back to Britain, he has as much right to be here as anyone. Let us not forget how many of our ancestors came from Britain.

Example: For the AR-15, you can purchase 10, 20, 30, 50, 75, or 100 round box magazines. That being said, only the 10, 20, and 30 are reliable at all. The larger ones jam a lot. Had Holmes used a smaller magazine, things could have been worse.
I should even ask you to define military grade ammo. Did you know that military ammo is often inherently less lethal that police and civilian ammo? Military ammo has a full metal jacket, often with a steel core. This provides a great amount of penetration, but since the bullet retains its shape, the cavitation of the wound is limited. These bullets are designed for maximum range and to penetrate armor or cover.
Police ammo is frangible, to prevent over penetration. Upon impact with a target, the bullet breaks into smaller pieces, which will not travel as far into the body. There are other alternatives to self defense, such as self defense classes. Using your scenario, a woman can also carry a weapon, although use rubber bullets or shot shells. Yes these too can be lethal, however, the intent isn't to kill; only to stun in order to get away. Statistics show that if a woman is armed to defend herself, the attacker would knock her out or knock the gun out of her hand and kill her with it anyways.

With a tough view on crime, 3 strikes you're out and in jail for life, open accessiblity for guns then obviously the US must be the safest place in the world with low crime rates, safe streets and low murder rates. Right? Does this describe the US properly? I don't think so. So the answer must be harsher penalties for criminals, more guns and tougher laws. Right? Maybe not. In Canada we have 35 million people and had a total of 600 murders nationally last year, about 150 of those by firearm. I don't care what the end result was either because if people are desperate enough, they'll take what they want regardless if there's a gun or not, and if the thief has the gun, and they do think the owner of the store has a gun, the robbers will shoot first. That's just logic. And it isn't like the first time I've heard a pro-gun person invite people to take their guns away. I also forgot to add, from the majority of the posts I've read on this message board, and from the interviews I've seen Piers Morgan conduct, no one is asking you to get rid of your guns and no one is threatening to take them away, which is something I think the pro-gunners are misunderstanding. What people are urging is the U.S. needs better gun CONTROL laws such as, and using James Holmes as the example: it's been reported James Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist, so, how was it possible for him to get a gun, when according to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, he should've been ineligible to own a firearm. Now, as a responsible gun owner (at least I hope you are), wouldn't you want something tweaked in the gun control law area to prevent someone like James Holmes from getting a gun? I hope your answer is yes. Unfortunately the U.S. has a poor health care system, so how would one go about a psychiatric screening in order to own a gun? Would someone be screened once a year, or every 3/6 months etc? Would a psychiatrist then notify the state informing them a patient isn't stable enough to own a gun? This is what politicians should be investigating so that someone like James Holmes can't get his hands on a gun. People aren't saying Americans need to get rid of guns, so quit taking it to that extreme. Canadians aren't saying get rid of your guns, because guns are legal here in Canada too. However, there are weapons and armor civilians in the U.S. simply do not need, and should only be available for police forces, SWAT, and army. People are only saying, tweak your gun control laws.
