Michael Moore speaks out: "I am not going to come on another one of these damn TV shows either, after the next one of these shootings"

Coming up this evening, "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore for his trademark brand of candid commentary, and human perspective.

Joining Piers Morgan for an exclusive interview that comes on the heels of Friday's deadly movie theater shooting in Aurora, CO, the 58-year-old is frustrated by what he views as the selfish nature of Americans:

"We have to see that we're a part of each other, and we have to take care of each other. The reason why they have universal health care in Canada and Britain, these other places? Because they believe if one suffers, everybody suffers," he tells the "Piers Morgan Tonight" host. "That is not our mentality, our mentality is 'I got mine, you get yours, and the hell with everybody else.'"

A decade since "Bowling for Columbine" – his groundbreaking 2002 documentary film exploring the causes for the massacre at Columbine High School – Moore is disheartened by a lack of progress:

"If people would just rise up and say 'Dammit, this is not the America I'm going to live in. This is too great of a country to let this happen again. I am not going to let this happen again.' And I am not going to come on another one of these damn TV shows either, after the next one of these shootings, Piers," he declares. "I'm sick of this. I refuse it. I refuse to live in a country like this, as I said before, and, I'm not leaving. So therefore, what am I going to do? It's got to change."

Watch the clip, listen to the interview, and tune in at 9 p.m. for a rare interview with one of the United States' most outspoken and insightful social critics.

Another wrongful comparison of the US with other nations.

I agree. They always put all these countries and try to compare. I'll give you a comparison. Mexico has had over 67,000 gun related homicides since 2006. That's a country with a third of the population of the United States. Here's another thing, in mexico, firearms are illegal to anybody that isn't a federal police officer. So a country where it is illegal for anybody to own a firearm has had over 67,000 fire arm related homicides in the last 6 years. You know why? Because in Mexico, not only do police officers own guns, also all the "bad guys". In a country where gun ownership is illegal, the only people that are left without a firearm are law abiding citizens, cause everybody else, including the people that want to do harm to you, will own a gun.

In the United States, do you think if gun ownership was illegal, that gang members wouldn't own a gun? Of course they would. There would be numerous ways to get a gun illegally just like there is today, just like you can get drugs, which are illegal. So in the end, the only people without guns would be law abiding citizens. It's that simple.

Last I heard, many of the illegal guns in Mexico come from US of A. How can one use Mexico as example for anti gun control.

So what's the difference between comparing the US to Mexico than to the other countries mentioned? Because Mexico is a third world country? That's not even the point, the point I was trying to make is that in a country where firearms are illegal, there are still over 67,000 deaths in the past 6 years because people that want to kill, are going to kill. It's that simple. In a country where firearms are illegal, everybody owns a gun EXCEPT law abiding citizens. You think gang violence is going to go down? Hell no, because they will still own guns. You think making drugs illegal has stopped the distribution of drugs? No, the difference is, instead of law abiding citizens selling the drugs, gang members are the ones selling drugs. If you really want to do drugs, you can buy drugs right now, it isn't difficult. If guns were illegal, law abiding citizens wouldn't own a gun, but that guy that wants to do harm to you will. Those gang members killing each other will. The guy that is going to rob the liquor store will. The guy going into your house to rob you will.

Why don't we just call it how it is. The guy that shot the theater up is a psychopath. There is a firearm in the United States per every U.S. citizen. Yet, there is only 12,000 deaths to guns a year. 300,000,000 fire arms and only 12,000 deaths.

Nobody's seriously proposing *total* gun illegality in this country, just (1) assault weapons and (2) large capacity magazines for semi-automatics and hand guns. Both Morgan and Moore *clearly* elucidated those points.

And regarding Mexico, the peasants there have been targeted over the years by both police (at times), and in particular, by drug cartels who (1) supply a constant flow of illegal drugs here, and (2) are equipped with weapons supplied by us. They are second to us in gun deaths, but due largely to the interchange between us of drugs and guns.

Pierce, Americans sure don't want a Brit telling us what to do. Please go back to England and please don't tell us about our rights. Everyone knows that CNN is slanted far to the left. It's ashame you always have to use a horrific tragedy to push CNN's agenda. From day one, CNN immediately started to grand stand for gun control. I was glad you were put in your place the first night. The reason President Obama doesn't talk about gun control is because his home state is a perfect example. Chicago has the tightest gun control in the US but it is murder capital of the world. You truly look like a idiot being a brit and trying to tell the american people what they need to do. The reason Colorada people ran out and bought guns is because of TV shows like yours. Go home Pierce!

Simplistically, a boxer cannot punch without fists, a child cannot colour without a crayon, and a shooting massacre cannot happen without ease of access to ammunition and weaponry. Why is everyone so surprised when incidents like these happen on a regular basis in the US. It says a lot about a country when someone wearing a costume with a gun can go and kill numerous people in a theater, and they ban COSTUMES. Maybe if that 6 year old had an assault weapon in hand, some defense would have been provided. The right to bare arms made sense in the 1800's, but not now. This business-minded nation needs to take a good hard look why gun-related deaths are an everyday occurance, and seriously get on track with the rest of the developed world in it's time.

At this time and place in history it's a little like closing the barn door after the horses have run out. Your country is fundamentally founded with your 2nd Ammendment-the right to bear arms. Your culture is one where it is OK to carry a weapon concealed or otherwise. I have never understood this need for guns and I never will. Here where I live (and yes it's Canada) I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO OWNS A GUN!! That is the honest to God's truth. I wouldn't even know where to purchase one even. Michael Moore hit it right on the head when he said, " "That is not our mentality, our mentality is 'I got mine, you get yours, and the hell with everybody else.'" And the sad truth is that is exactly how I and many others in the world perceive American's- right or wrong. It is so sad but true. Unfortunately, we as humans are a violent race, that has not changed since the dawn of man. There will always be individuals who will "war, mame and kill". But do you have to make it easier for them? SERIOUSLY?? On one level I understand if you want to own a gun for protection-that is your right , however, why can't it be an exceedingly thourough and long process? And one where you can't arm yourself to the teeth with ammunition? Ammunition who's soul purpose is to KILL?? What is so wrong with that?? What is so wrong with having a zillion checks and balances? That way you can still have your "right to bear arms"? Like I said, I just don't understand your gun culture-never will! Does that mean that we don't have issues here in Canada-Absolutely not. But I think until you change your society that is "gun centered", things will never change, never mind how many checks and balances are in place.

I totally agree with what Michael and piers are saying about gun control in America. To address any issue people may have with Piers, in this case it doesn't really matter what he did before or where he's hated because he's touching a issue in where his history has no correlation and honestly he's just being logical, in my opinion. The only thing I'd like to point out is the argument that if you put a stricter gun control policy people will get it anyway, well I feel like that's saying terrorists want to bomb people anyway so lets not improve airport security. Its true that people will always find a way to get guns but with stronger gun control laws(i think they should be banned all together) it'll bring down the number of gun related crimes, even if its by a little its worth it. Through this mentality, overtime gun crime will go down more a more.

I don't see any problem with comparisons, if they are made correctly. I believe Mr. Moore's comparison with other countries was made to ask, "is there a better way." We hurt ourselves believing we, the USA, are the only country or people capable of a good ideas.

Of comparisons, to clarify, it is legal to own a gun in Mexico. A major issue with Mexico's problem with gun violence, and I am not a criminologist, is enforcement. It is too easy to purchase illegally (mostly from the USA) and there is not a sufficient infrastructure in place to police the problem.

Being a wealthy country, the USA is capable of so many things. And if we are to move forward, I will ask, who has made the proper comparison? You or Mr. Moore?

I just came back from Las Vegas and saw the MOB Attraction.
What struck me was that alcohol Prohibition was the centerpiece which made many immensely wealthy. Many of those used their money to further their goals in Organized Crime. Prohibition back fired on the US Government. After Prohibition was lifted Organized Crime was awash in money, organized and opened up business in Las Vegas.
If guns were banned then the same thing would happen: black market gun operations would florish. The bad guys would be armed, crime bosses would get wealthy and another subculture would form this time by guns, not alcohol.

Banning guns will not stop gun sales. The only people without guns will be your law abiding citizens. I don't want that nor will I support an attack on the Second Amendment.

Bottom line..... When we start punishing the criminals "for real" maybe the "bad guys" would take things more seriously. I am happy to say I have a conceal and carry and would not hesitate to use my weapon if I was in fear for my life. . I also would like to make note that I have been property trained. I would also not hesitate to use a heavy frying pan (which is a weapon). Let's say someone broke into my house in the middle of the night and I was being attacked. How long do you think it would take the police to arrive? In some cases, too long. Again, let's get back to the root of the problem. Start punishing criminals for the crimes they commit! Until our government learns how to do this we will continue to have a very serious problem on our hands. Always remember criminals will always find a way to get a weapon / gun! As far as ordering large amounts of ammo, etc. YES "pass a law" to "flag the system". Unless your a gun dealer, etc. why would a person require extreme amounts of ammo. Michael Moore I enjoyed listening to you until this episode! Your a ding-bat! People kill people it's just the choice of weapon. Punish the Criminals in a "Serious Fashion" – Rise Up against what Michael Moore - How about CRIMINALS!!!!!!!

I saw those stats, but you also didn't understand what he was trying to say. You do have to punish the criminals, and the U.S. does a horrible job at it. Why is it that someone that can commit mass murder can take years to prosecute? Yes he's in prison just living it up on our tax dollars, why is he allowed to do that? Why are these people taken to a "correctional facility" when they belong in a freaking dungeon. Murderers and pedophiles don't deserve a chance to see the light of day ever again. Why is our justice system so lame? When I traveled to Singapore I was told not to worry to walk around at midnight, that it's really secure. You know why? Because if a guy tries to rob you, they get their hands cut off. You think that's extreme or barbaric? Fine, keep this ridiculous justice system where a murderer can delay litigation for years. Make a federal law that if you murder somebody, you get the death penalty. And I'm not talking about Death Row where you stay for 30 years before being put down, I mean you get put down within weeks of being guilty. If not days. The justice system has to be stricter to these type of criminals.

Ok if "I got mine, you got yours" is wrong, then why doesnt hollywood take the lead and donate all their salaries OVER 1 million a year to improving the country. Put that money to fight hunger, homeless, create jobs. No, they would rather spend it on themselves and tell everyone ELSE how to act. I'm sorry but 1M a year is enough to live comfortably on, regardless of how much you donate or help. All the rest is excess they claim everyone else is hoarding. Until you spend your money to back what you say, don't tell me how to spend mine. If hollywood people donate everything over 1M a year to help this country, I will do the same.

I enjoy going to the shooting range, hunting, and gun safety. I also believe in the world we live in today, and there is a need for gun & ammo monitoring (control). There is always room for improvements to make our society/communities safer & better for all.

Drug test for psychosomatic drugs to go with background checks for guns, and instead of every 5 years with concealed weapons permit, every 2 years and last but not least when background check and applications for shooting ranges are "rejected" they must be reported to the local police station/or appropriate dept..

Create a database for all states to check "rejected" permits so no one can skip to another state ...
If a few improvements stop one atrocity or killing of our families, friends or neighbors then so be it.

Last but not least... who in the heck needs automatic weapons. This should stay in the military bottom line!

Oh just heard the review of President Obama and Romney talk about ban on assault weapons.

I think it is time for Americans to demand nothing less, we have to take care of our families, friends, and neighbors. Get real with the world we live in – improvements can and must be made!

I believe the second amendment is intented to have an armed citizenshp to protect against foreign invasion. Although, the amendment goes on to say these rights shall not be infringed. I feel that most Americans i know own guns to preserve the democracy against a government that has acquired too much power then, we are back to Kings ruling the country while the rich get richer and the peasants finally overthrew monarchy, dictatorship, communism, etc. No government no matter how powerful, corrupt, controled by those with wealth and resources and connections, can exploit its own citizens if they all have the right to bear arms. If the US government started killing its innocent civillians at random,(as in Syria) our citizens would respond with a complete regim change, compliments of citizens with a legally owned firearm.

Ice T was spot on with his comments.

Our right to bear arms isn't about hunting, or other sportsman activities.

It's so that we, the people, can rise up against the government if necessary.

Murderous maniacs are a price we pay for our freedom, but even without the second amendment, there would still be plenty of violent crimes committed.

The trick is to find a fair balance for gun laws, and yes these things do need to be reviewed often to make sure they are fair to our rights and our safety. Unfortunately our congress has been absolutely worthless for many years, and could never make difficult decisions, leaving most of these laws up to the states.

The UK has some of the strictest gun controls on the planet. Very low gun ownership.

In 2010 there was a gun massacre with 12 people shot dead. Clearly not prevented by draconian gun bans and confiscations following the Hungerford massacre in the 80s, and the Dunblane massacre in the 90s.

Where are all the "men" in this country?
How is it that a raving lunatic can stand up in a theater or a shopping mall or a university campus and start shooting and killing people for "several minutes" and " NO MAN" does a thing about it except hide behind a chair or desk. The reason these idiots are able to do what they do is because "they know they can" and noone is going to stand up and shoot back. The police can only be depended on to arrive after the fact and clean up the mess. Stop thinking that you are safe.(Be men, get armed and end this stupid debate).
I may not be a crack shot and I may not be able to bring a guy down that's shooting up a place where I just happen to be....but " I want the choice". I don't need that choice dictated by anyone including slimy politicians, theater owners or mall management. If I am with my kids and wife and I am the only thing standing between them and some lunatic, intent on harm, I want the choice and I'll take my chances. Again, where are the men in this country? It's disappointing.

The only way this debate will ever end is when there are enough armed "real" men in this country that stand up and shoot back and end these rampages in a few second instead of several minutes. Who has seen the video of the old guy in Florida who ended that robbery at the internet cafe. THe more there are of this guy around. The less and less these lunatics are going to be thinking about standing up and starting to shoot.
Get armed now and end this stupid debate. Get armed and this debate will be over. Don't be shy about it. Go get your cary permit and help end this insanity.

If this guy had used a car to slam into a store or a restaurant full of people killing the same number of persons, would you suggest car control ? Had this guy used a knife to kill all these people would you suggest knife control or prohibition ?
Bad people will be out there and will do bad things independently of laws or regulations. Because drugs are prohibited and " controled" have you seen any reduction or extermination of drugs and its users ? Finally if you do not allow good people to have a gun how can they protect themselves from bad people? In an imaginary scenario, you are a bad person and you want to commit a robbery. There are two houses and in one house you know there is a man with a gun and the other one there is a man without a gun, tell me which one would you try to break into ? Things written in a paper never changed and will never change the world. Think of it.

It may save your life but it won’t stop the pain of a bullet impact.
One shot to the chest would crack ribs, knock the wind out of you and in general incapacitate the shooter
Plus being shot back at suddenly makes you less efficent.

Even with body armor, the force of a 45 caliber round can break ribs and/or knock a person to the ground. I can't help but beleive that had a trained CCW person(s)would not have made a positive difference in this horrible shooting inicident. Yovu really should educate yourself about a subject before making ignorant statements. The people who knows about firearms will never be understood by those with the antigun liberal mondset. Over 300 lbs of transfered force for a .45 ACP through kevlar. That will definitely crack some ribs. And the standard G21 magazine is what, 14+1 chambered?

There are simple facts that back this up. Kevlar is not magical.

The shooter's level of protection has been misrepresented in the media. The sales receipt that was released revealed that his vest cost less than $100. Body armor vests (Kevlar and the like) cost $600 to $1200. What he had was a utility vest – used for equipment storage only – it provides ZERO ballistic protection. A few armed citizens would have taken him out very quickly.

Another case of mass shooter choosing a location where he knew the victims would be unarmed due to a gun ban in the cinema.

He then threw tear gas into the audience confusing people even more. I am afraid he had the element of suprise which would render anyone in the theatre having a gun absolutely useless. The real issue is how do we prevent assualt rifles and mega ammo clips from being sold with little or no restrictions. Had is assault rifle not jammed I am sure we would have more fatalites than just 12.

This is the most silly thing I've read. Bad parenting caused this and causes every problem in America. Required licenses to have children and monitor families with children to ensure they are doing a good job. Let teachers report kids who act out in a violent or unstable manner and allow them to remove those children from their classes until the issue is corrected AT HOME, BY THE PARENT. If they parents screw up a kid, lock them up, and abort the full grown kid via a hangman's noose. That will fix all our problems real quick and no more banning anything.

lol, the reason people have a low view of the media is because they are realizing more and more what controls the media: PROFITS.

The media is in business to sell advertising. It is not in business to give you "news, weather and sports". If you get some of that, it's a fringe benefit. The business is ads. Selling ads.

"If you're not paying for the product, you ARE the product". The news media has customers like any other business. Theirs are advertisers. Who want proof that their ads will be seen. CNN needs to prove that by - like all media - sensationalizing. "Man bites dog" - that sells. Not "dog bites man".

You really have to stop slinging the word "communist" around. The opposite of communism is fascism, so otherwise you're saying the U.S. is a fascist country? Are you that oblvious about the world outside the U.S.? There are other countries that have professional shooting as a major sport too. It's funny how some on here order people off the message board if they're not American or if they're American and would like to see better gun control laws, to move. And this bit about soliciting the U.S. to help with guns, what is that? U.S. invades Iraq and it's the U.S. crying to other countries to help with their invasion and the only country that would help you was GBR because the invasion wasn't UN approved, and here you are slamming a British reporter? Now that's ungrateful! But Americans did this to Canada too in 1958-59. Eisenhower convinces Diefenbaker to cancel the construction of the Avro Arrow, which would've been the fastest plane of the time and what does Canada do? We do cancel it and even destroy them all and guess where those CANADIAN engineers ended up going? To build your NASA space program working on projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo so that America can send the first man to space. So every time you hear "That's one small step for man...." you think about the CANADIANS behind your AMERICAN accomplishment! You're welcome! Go learn some history before you go slamming other countries!

Pacifism: A philosophy of non-violence, practiced by people whose right to do so is defended by the killing and dying of others.

$uck it up, buttercup. Your freedoms mean naught but for the ability to preserve them; and the only ability that truly allows that is naked force. The Second Amendment was intended to allow citizenry access to the same level of firepower that the government possesses. The places that try to restrict that are the places attacked by those who have no respect for the law or rights of others. You can talk all you want about "weekend warriors" and "closet Rambos," but there are enough people who own and train with a personal firearm to the point of regimental discipline that could have helped defuse this situation. It has been seen time and again.

I will not disarm for your comfort. Your rights end where mine begin. And your feelings have no dog in this fight.

As I read a few of these comments I was struck by the polarization this tragedy in Aurora has once again awakened regarding gun control. "The Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm to use for traditionally lawful purposes, such as defending oneself within their home or on their property." This is not a right anyone wants to take away. I believe the Founding Fathers never intented the 2nd Amendment to be used as a way for the gun manufacturers to continue to produce, market and sell automatic assualt weapons and their corresponding ammunition to the general public. With annual revenue in the billions of dollars and the strongest lobbying presence in Congress, it is no wonder the politicians won't bring up stricter gun control laws. Sadly, removing the ability to purchase such firearms doesn't mean there will never be a deranged person seeking to kill innocent people. However, stopping of the sale of these weapons and their corresponding ammunition will make such a murderer's intended task that much harder to accomplish. Destroying our 2nd Amendment rights are not at stake. Could one argue that it is someone's freedom in America to commit mass murder? The idea is as ludicrous as the sale of automatic assault rifles.

Hmmmmm as anti gun person misquoting information.

Well for was not an AUTOMATIC weapon that was used......and I am not just playing on your misplaced wording......this is usually what happens. The wrong information is given...then others take it and run with it....and after not too is stretched so far that the truth is not even identifieable any more.

And this is the hidden agenda of MANY....not all...but MANY anti-gun control people. They say that they simply want to change one or two things/laws, but then the real agenda is total banning of weapons or restrictions so severe that the average honest person cannot own a firesarm...

Gun possession is such a sensitive and touchy subject that for the most part.....most of the arguments against owership from what I see are emotional arguments. Not rational reasons.....A bit of a history lesson here...and I am not a history teacher...but just old enough ( mid 50's ) that much of this information was taught to me when I was young and when I daily said the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE,

Did you know...that every state that has made it easier to carry a concealed weapon within the past 10 years, that crime has gone own in those states. I bet you didn't, because it is NEVER REPORTED anywhere....not in the news, TV, CABLE, NEWSPAPERS......why is that? Hmmmmmmm CONTROL....this info is from the FBI....not some way off goofy group of nuts. And that the 2 most restrictive places to live and want a gun.....our own capitol D.C

The 2nd amendment is not just to protect us from bad people but from our OWN GOVERNMENT ! Our fore fathers had just placed their lives on the line by signing the Declaration and were given the Death Penalty in Absentia by the British Monarchy, the King..... They wanted built in guarantee's that this would not happen to us in the future, and that allowing individuals to own and possess weapons, let the new governments at that time know what was up and what we would NOT put up with. A repeat of what we just fought to get away from!!

Now...for some reason, this is never mentioned any more as I guess most have forgotten our own history...( hmmm....there is some catchy phrase about forgetting history are bound to...... oh welll, another time ) and find arguments to fit their own agenda's now matter what they are. And people say...WHAT.....we would never reach tha point againh...our government could never get that bad like back then.....Hahahahahaha.....well....take a long look around the world right many countries have over thrown their own governments in the past 2 years....3-5-more....

BUT,,,,,this is the US!! What about the late 70's, we were LUCKY that enough good people stood up and brought down the Nixon administration. Most do not realize just how corrupt HE WAS....OUR GOVERNMENT illegal it was and what they would have kept doing if not stopped. It could have turned into marshall law with all the race riots, all the anti-war protests, how Nixon was paranoid about all this and the measures he was going to, and was WILLING togo to, just to gurantee his survival. Isn't this what the dictators have been doing the past several years all over the world.

BUT NOT HERE IN AMERICA.!!!!!. Well....why not....what makes us so different that it could NEVER happen here....

That is the true basis of what I believe our forefathers meant with placing that squarely as the SECOND AMENDMENT not the third...not the sixth...not the 7th....but the SECOND...that is how important they believed that they were. BUt with the lack of our knowledge our own history, it is never discussed or argued as it is made fun of by ignorant people who can control the news and what gets out to the I paranoid....nahh...not in the least. Am I pragmatic and bet I am. OH well....this 9pm coffee really has me going tonight...hahahaha no more after 7pm, I broke my own rule toinght.

I appreciate your point of view. We are in the same age bracket so I do understand the Nixon scandals and the Pledge of Allegiance being recited in school. The 2nd Ammendment information I was quoting came from the Supreme Court in 2008 and 2010. They issued two Second Amendment decisions. "In District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm, unconnected to service in a militia and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home." I am not misquoting or subjected to misinformation by the media. If limits or controls are set on this particular portion of gun ownership, how would it be restricting the ability to enable your rights as an American to buy/own weapons? I have watched the news, like everyone else, and have understood his weapons to include an Smith & Wesson M&P15 which is, in the broader class of AR-15 SEMI Automatic Assault Rifles, a Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and finally, a pump action 12 guage shot gun. Additionally, the 100 round drum of ammunition was mentioned. I assume you meant that I was uninformed and misquoted the weaponry because I said automatic instead of semi-automatic. Forgive the misquote of nomenclature, however, the capacity of human death toll from these weapons is sufficient enough to warrant stricter controls on purchase. The necessity of restrictions on the general population's right to bear arms is not meant to eliminate our 2nd Amendment rights but to deliver appropriate limitations on the sale and purchase of such weapons whose sole use is to kill human beings. I appreciate there are multiple points of view on this topic, but to label my comment as uniformed is incorrect. Asking for restrictions on the purchase of certain types of weapons infringes on no one. Military use of these weapons during active duty while in a war zone is one legally purchase these weapons and ammunition at yoru local gun shop or Walmart is another. Where was the oversight? Where was the responsibilty of everyone from the credit card company seeing all of these purchases on a bill, to those stores who sold the weapons, to the University's heightened sense of awareness that a potential problem existed with this man, to the manufacturers who continually lobby for the general population to be within their 2nd Amendment rights to own such weaponry? To defend our homes, to hunt for animals, to protect yourself in a dire emergency, to defend in Militia environments...2nd Amendment. To be able to sell and purchase killing machines serves one purpose, making money.

Why don't we ever hear about harsher punishment for the obviously guilty? Why do we call the guilty person a suspect? I think instead of thinking gun control would solve this issue (which it wouldn't), we should concentrate on new laws for this type of perpetrator ("suspect" lol). I know we are america and everyone deserves a trial by his/her peers, but lets get real on this type of situation. The person that did this doesn't deserve a trial, his trial is being caught red handed. He should already be dead, by leathal injection or whatever means Colorado approves of per the states death penalty laws.

Enough with the so-called "gun control."Gun control has become increasingly more strict over the past several decades, while violent crime rates have increased. Why is this? Because criminals DON'T CARE if guns are illegal! They can get them anyway! What happens is that you scare innocent law-abiding citizens away from responsible gun use, while criminals become bolder about arming themselves. The end result is a population of 90% disarmed innocent bystanders, and 10% violent criminals armed to the teeth with no opposition.Let's say you are an armed criminal looking to rob someone at gunpoint, so you single out an old lady as a victim, drag her into an alleyway and put a gun to her head, and tell her to give you her purse. Why did you go about it that way? Because you're pretty damned sure she's not packing a gun, that's why! Now, let's say that you go into the same situation knowing there's a 50/50 chance that little old lady might be packing a 45 caliber HAND-CANNON? Are you still gonna be so gung-ho about taking her purse? Hell no, you're not.Criminals don't look for a fair fight. They look to take advantage, and guess what? They HAVE the advantage, because while the rest of us have been disarming ourselves (and one another), they've been buying more guns.Remember, criminals DON'T CARE if guns are illegal. They'll buy them anyway.Wake up, people. Shaking your finger at violent criminals and saying, "You can't have guns / drugs / etc" just makes you look like a doofus. And it can very well get you shot, for being a moron. p.s I live in Aurora, CO

Some nutso at CNN is obviously in love with his very-English self/accent, but the fellow is doing a disservice to Americans. I have asked local reporters but they are not interested in this question so far. My take on why gun sales have gone up in Colorado since the shooting, just as they did after Obama's election apparently according to Moore, is that people who were thinking about buying one run out to do it while they can, afraid that tighter gun control may be introduced.

Gun sales AND requests for concealed carry are both WAY up in Colorado. Every tragedy like in Aurora happens in "gun free zones" – against defenseless unarmed people, where they "feel" safe, but they are NOT safe.

I make my own "zone" – and it ain' t gun free !!

Fear. This must be the reason for the number of firearms owned by the everyday American. But what are you all afraid of? Each other? Is trust an improbable concept? Kill or be killed? The American public must look inwards to find answers to the reasons behind the extrordinary number of murders.

While it's true that there are people and organizations bigger and stronger than the average citizen that could likely mean him/her harm, and that being armed can help prevent that harm from occuring, you think fear is the only reason?

I own firearms. I own them for personal protection, sure; I would love to never be in a situation that requires them, but they're there. Better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it. I love going shooting. It allows me to hone an aspect of myself that does have real world applications, as much as people would like to ignore it. It also is cathartic, and very stress relieving. But why I would own several guns?

They're beautiful. In much the same way as a car can be beautiful, personal firearms are a wedding of form and function that inspires, intimidates, and intrigues. You can almost tell the ideals of the manufacturer by the way the entire piece fits together. Many collectors share these ideals.

Unfortunately, I live now in the wrong era of firearm design. Every country's standard rifle is a M16 variant reciever with a collapsible stock, 4-point RAS rails, chambered in 5.56mm NATO. Horrifying as war is, true ingenuity and artistry comes out of conflict. In WWII, every country had their own firearms, and each had it's strengths and weaknesses. No two of them functioned exactly alike. Each had their role, and their charm. It always saddens me when people can only see that a gun is a weapon, and can't look past that to the ingenuity and thought that goes into each design.

Oh well. I suppose you can keep saying we're afraid. Then again, you seem to be afraid of us.

Legislation of developing and developed nations differs. the 2nd Amendment speaks to the needs of a developing nation, which the USA is no longer. I was appropriate for the time of its conception with the limited law enforcement. Today that is not the case.
In addition the fact at the time of the drafting of the 2nd Amendment, guns were limited in round capacity, and the ability to allow rapid reload and firing. Accordingly a limitation of the fire power that civilians can own, is not a modification of the 2nd Amendment, but in keeping with its intent.

Law enforcement in the modern world has no duty to protect the citizenry. The Supreme Court ruled that.

Your argument on the capacity of a flintlock musket carries little weight. It could very easily be stated that the Second Amendment encourages civilian ownership of top of the line military hardware, as that is what flintlock muskets were at the time.

Of the vast majority of gun related deaths each year, few are accidents. Does a person accidentally get drunk and drive? Does a person accidentally text and drive? Does a person accidentally speed excessively? Since there are more motor vehicle related deaths than gun deaths, should we not make vehicle illegal? Or maybe make vehicular homicides relating to one the above a felony murder charge? Take away guns and people will find other ways to harm others.

It is not THAT usual there is much info left out. For instance....most gun sales on the internet are through dealers....and unless the weapon is 50 years or and you have a C & R license ( C & R stands for CURIO and RELIC meaning 50+ years or older – which you are open to inspection at your home, if you have the license and it is NOT to buy and sell the weapons..They are for your own personal collction. And if you notice...not many old weapons being used in these tragic crimes we read about ) other than these firearms, if you buy a new or slightly used has to be sent to a dealer in your state...who does a background check on you....just as if you were buying it from him. SInce he is transferring it toYOU...he is required to do the background is NOT an option.

Now if you buy from a individual, if it is a pistol has to be sent to a DEALER....but this does not happen a GREAT DEAL as there is the shipping charge, which it has t be sent OVERNIGHT...and the dealer you will pick it up from is going to charge you a fee anywhere from $45 up to $60 just for filling out the paper work. Now, between the overnght fee and the dealers fee.....many weapons, and MOST pistols will not be sold this way, as it is cheaper to buy one in your own state. Rifles and shotguns...I am not sure of each indiv state law....but most of the classifieds I see say F2F only. Which means they do not want to deal with mailing and fees and this acronym stands for FACE to FACE.

SO it can happen...but is NOT as easy as it may seem. NOw ammo is a different story...and many dealers want o sell lots of 500 to 1000 at a time as bulk pricing is cheaper for the customer and customers would RATHER purchse this much at once, but I never have because it is still expensive. The reason for this actually, is a short term SHORTAGE of ammo available at local gun stores due to the multiple wars we have been invoilved with, as ammo manufact are or have been busy making ammo for the government. ALso when Obama was elected the prices went WAY up and have never really recovered since then. The price has come down, but only somewhat....also...there is no more military surplus to just shoot for fun, called plinking...shooting tim cans, paper targets, milk jugs and such.

Just some info to help inform you about the unspoken realities out there. Hope it helps you some.l

Do you even know what an assault weapon is? Ooooh, better question: Do the people with the power to place these gun restrictions know what an assault weapon is? Try googling "congresswoman barrel shroud" to find out how much they know.

I just heard Michael Moores interpretation on the 2nd amendment. I think the 2nd amendment's purpose was not specifically to allow people to bare arms, I think it was set up as a self check that if the government created by the founding fathers becomes unjust, the people have the right to take up arms and overthrow their oppressors. My point is this, I think it was an extension od what was stated in the Declaration of Independence that a person that has the ability to take action has the responsibility to take action if under an unfair/ extreme rule. My over arching point is this, the anti-federalist wanted to make sure that people could rise up if threatened by foreign or own government, not to bare arms with no checks on them.

So, just how does a society rise-up against its government if it not guaranteed the right to keep and bear arms? Keep in mind, guns were at the forefront of technology back in that time. One need not look far in the news headlines to see examples of what our forefathers feared ( Syria).

You are the first one I have seen that has made ths FACTUAL reference to the 2nd amendment. I have posted 2 comments on this board about this. Many people think that we are so far removed from having a government that CORRUPT that would need a uprising against.

Many have already forgotten the Nixon administration already or hat he founding fathers at the very LEAST wanted our politicians to know that we possess this possibiity. DO I think this could happen? I dunno, but I would rather be prepared than NOT be prepared. We already see what happens aeound he world for individuals who do not have this option.

OR that we are a developed country and this only happens in developing countries. Well...I do not believe most really know just how close we came to an economic melt down....what would happen then.....again..I dunno, but would RATHER be prepared than not.

      Just a few thoughts........

Is this guy even relevant? Who the F#%* cares what Michael Moore thinks? Our current gun laws ( at least in the Northeast) go too far as it is. When will these bleeding-heart morons get it?! I will spell it out for you: no laws will stop the creation of stupid, psychopaths. Stupid, sick people will continue to kill innocent people, beit with cars, planes, bombs, whatever! Benjamin Franklin said it best: "those who would give-up liberty for temporary security, deserve neither and will lose both". I'm sick and tired of hearing from pundits who think they know better than the 'dream team' who created the best roadmap for democracy, ever! They got it right, get over it! It's laughable that people like Michael Moore have the audacity to sit in his comfy chair, safe and secure in his 'blanket of freedom', a freedom that was won through the pain and sacrifice of men (and women) with big balls (figuratively speaking) and even bigger guns!

Whenever you see people slaughtered like in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Serbia, etc. ask yourself whether the government could get away with their murderous ways if the people had the right to protect themselves (ie the right to bear arms). If Piers and Moore don't care to protect themselves, that is their problem.

No, we have little faith in people, which are what make up our democratic system. People who run it, who manipulate fear and emotion to divide the country on the simplest things. People who support the status quo, mindlessly sticking to a party even if someone, anyone else is the better choice. Both parties have too many of these kinds of people.

I have faith in persons. "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky animals."

Just get guns out of the hands of everyone. They are made to kill people. How far does freedom go, you are not free to build a bomb so why should you have the right to have a gun. No Nation is that "free" that you have no restrictions and can do what you want so stop with the "we live in a free society and it's my right" argument. Nobody has that much freedom or there would be caos.

So, just get rid of all guns. Even if all non-criminals agreed, it could not be done.
Also, "making bombs is illegal;" did that stop Holmes? NO. In fact, if he hadn't shot up the theater and then told the cops his apartment was rigged, those illegal bombs he made would have done more damage than his shooting did.

Okay, let’s reword your sentence witsend because you’re saying exactly the same thing I’m saying when looking from my EXAMPLE of the 2nd party perspective.

My 2nd party perspective example stated: “I should have the LIBERTY to carry a gun.”

Your statement: “If I don't have the liberty to carry a gun, I will not have the liberty to walk around my neighborhood without looking over my shoulder.”

Omit the words DON’T and NOT from your statement and your sentence would be restructured like this:

“I should have the LIBERTY to carry a gun, so I can walk around my neighborhood without looking over my shoulder.”

You’re saying the same thing I am in my 2nd party perspective, only you chose to structure your sentence with DON’T and NOT.

Although, this isn’t what my post was about to begin with. My post was about excluding labels such as LIBERALISM. Let’s just take out the whole liberal aspect of this because that whole word and concept is being misused and abused. Obviously, from the example I just gave, both parties are liberal as they want the FREEDOM to do what they want, when they want and hopefully according to legal, social standards. When I say legal, social standards, I mean, ok, fine, you want to carry a gun, go right ahead but you don't need a rocket launcher, and an oozie, armor piercing bullets and a ballistic helmet. Lock that down and put a limit on that stuff. Civilians shouldn’t be able to buy this stuff and don't need it anyways because that's what your police force is for, what SWAT is for. If it gets brutal, call in the army as America has the best army and that's what they're for.

My concern is gun control should be a MORAL obligation on EVERY politician’s agenda regardless of party association and/or political belief because my question right now is: What is so UNITED about the United States? I don’t see any unity at all. Mind you, not one person has answered this question yet.

Doesn’t matter anyway because if the U.S. keeps on going the way it’s going, it will indeed implode. The U.S. will start looking like Iran, or Iraq, or Afghanistan where everyone is brandishing weapons and then other countries and the United Nations will have to go into the U.S. to teach U.S. citizens how to co-exist peacefully without shooting the crap out of each other and no one will be able to tell the good guys from the bad guys because everyone owns a gun. And the U.S. is trying to teach Muslims how to live? Pfffft….. The U.S. needs to clean up its own country first.

Again, the point of the Second Amendment is missed. The reason that the citizenry should be armed (in my opinion, even up to military specifications) is because of the police, SWAT, and military. They are the tools of the government. That's not a bad thing right now. But look at these dictatorships around the world. Those aren't just random thugs abusing the people. They're soldiers and police officers. This occurs primarily in countries where the people are prevented from defending themselves effectively. The Fourth Amendment keeps them out of our houses if we choose, but laws are rights can only be enforced by force.

Am I saying my one rifle will let me take on the whole U.S. military should the government overstep it's bounds? Not a chance. The 300,000,000 other guns owned by citizens will. That's the point.

        “…but laws are rights…”

        Say what!?

“The reason that the citizenry should be armed (in my opinion, even up to military specifications) is because of the police, SWAT, and military.”

“Am I saying my one rifle will let me take on the whole U.S. military should the government overstep it’s [sic] bounds? Not a chance. The 300,000,000 other guns owned by citizens will. That’s the point.”

        Utter nonsense.

With respect to the number of guns possessed by the U.S. populace: even 300,000,000 guns could not stop—or even slow—our military if our government were to truly “overstep its bounds.”

“But look at these dictatorships around the world. Those aren’t just random thugs abusing the people. They’re soldiers and police officers. This occurs primarily in countries where the people are prevented from defending themselves effectively.”

Not true. In much of the Middle East – more often not; in many African countries – more often true.

Almost all Iraqis owned one or more firearms many of which were fully automatic AK-47s. Was it the firearms that caused problems for our military forces or was it the abundance of IED’s and homicide bombers that forestalled a shortened military incursion into Iraq. No, guns will be of little to no use against a powerful military that also wields an equally powerful air force.

This type of antiquated, anachronistic pro Second Amendment reasoning reminds me of an episode of The Simpsons where aliens from outer space, Kang and Kodos, remark: “your superior intellect is no match for our puny weapons!”

Nevertheless I’ll continue to responsibly own firearms as long as long as I live…and the NRA does not speak for (nor represents) me.

CHNO, I'm a veteran and i will tell you first hand that the military could not stand up to the entirety of citizens, Christians maybe jk ..and the only argument that i need to make would be well...when government corruption/take over is made widely you think all those soldiers of the armed forces would let there own family's be abused and herded like cattle and that they would actually take part themselves in doing this. Hell F&^*ing No..they would go AWOL like a lot of today's soldiers do when the army tells them they can't even go home to take care of their family members in times of family crisis's. Its truly ridiculous and I've seen captain's in the army locked up for just that. I was personally thrown in a mexican prison because after i was tragically injured in a motorcycle accident(Leg shattered)..i was cut off from medication after just 2 months and i was hospitalized for 34 days...i told my leadership(the people you are suppose to trust with your life) that i needed medication and i was denied and in agonizing pain, so i decided to self medicate and help myself because at that point you realize that you have to do things for yourself to make life easier, and no i'm not a drug user or a pill head. I went from being the most physically fit soldier in my battalion to the most immobile one in a flash and was left to suffer in prison for a failed UA which i admitted to doing and was honest that i had to help myself due to my leaderships lack of long story short, I was screwed by the military and so were many others around me. If you ever have the chance to experience the military, most will come to understand that at the end of the day it is JUST ANOTHER JOB. If you plan on getting F-ed in the A by having your pay missing every month and not being able to have time to even fix the problem or having to be led by people whom you are positive are far less intelligent than yourself, than go join the what i am saying is that at the first hint of a government take-over, a good bit of soldiers will gather whatever weaponry than can find and take off to help their civilian families. That's what i would have done and i was an excellent soldier with awards, integrity and loyalty to any soldier that deserved it. Screw you Piers!

I spent the better part of last year in San Antonio (Texas). Most morning newscasts led with reports of knife attacks in local bars. Man's inhumanity to man is all around us and etched in history. It's the fallen nature of mankind. Our hearts ache for the fallen and their families are in our prayers. Unfortunately, we cannot legislate or police against evil and insanity... Living in a large city in Texas (Houston) I hold no illusion that my government (federal, state, or local) can protect me and my family. They can't even protect our borders – one of their primary obligations. Let's look at the root causes of tragic events and not jump on the ban guns bandwagon...

I find it disingenuous that Mr Moore is trying to accuse gun owners of racism when he is promoting gun control that is based in racism against blacks. Gun control has it's roots in Jim Crow laws and the supreme court has ruled that the right to own a gun is a civil right. I assume after he gets guns banned he will want segregated schools and water fountains again.

I find intectually dishonest bigots like Michael Moore disgusting. Why is CNN giving air time to anticivil rights bigotry?

" If anything of value can come from tragedies such as this one in Colorado, it is that they make discussion of gun proliferation and violence unavoidable. But no, I take that back. The night after the Colorado killings I saw several politicians and gun activists on TV dodging important questions through the time-tested ploy of saying, in one form or another, "For the moment, I think we should just pray for the families of the people killed by this evil man." Translation: "I'm going to tell you I'm praying so I appear to care but don't actually have to DO anything – not even think about what caused this as I've already decided: it was 'evil'." I only saw one newsman, Piers Morgan, refuse to be bumped off point by this faux compassion.

David Kopel, who is an NRA member, suggested more attention be paid to the victims, rather than talking about gun control. "Honestly Piers, I think this is the wrong night to be doing this and I really wish you'd waited to have this segment until after the funerals." Morgan angrily replied, "A lot of people have said that today, a lot of people who don't want strengthening of gun control, have said 'This is not the day to debate it.' I'll tell you the day to debate it, it would have been yesterday, to prevent this from happening – so don't patronize me about when we should be talking about the gun control debate." I haven't always liked my fellow-countryman, but this was a rare and truly great journalistic moment. Enough with evasion and hypocrisy, let's get serious.

Let's get serious because America's best face has always been its honest and optimistic face. This is the face the world loves and admires, the face that says anything can be achieved here. At least this used to be what the world saw when it looked at America and what America used to see when it looked in the mirror. Perhaps it was always an illusion, this can-do hope, but if so it was an illusion that managed to get rid of slavery and segregation as well as landing someone on the moon.

This is perhaps the most disturbing thing about so many of the comments on my article: how utterly cynical, bitter and defeatist people have become, how scornful they are of even the possibility of social change, how scathing they are about the idea of things getting better through the will of the people, and how ready they are to accept this country as a dark place so intransigently divided a gun is a necessity."

Listen or don't listen to Michael Moore, the fact is that America is a nation in fear. This is way beyond guns. This is way beyond greed or selfishness.

    It is about fear.

America is hooked on the drug called fear. Afraid that germs are on your counter, that you're not feeding your kids the right peanut butter, that your whites aren't white enough, that your car isn't safe enough, that your cell calls might be dropped, that you're not getting enough news, that your spaghetti sauce has no pizzazz, that your dog's getting fat, that you're ugly, that you're fat.

See where I'm going? If not, let me spell it out to you: P-R-I-V-A-T-E E-N-T-E-R-P-R-I-S-E.

If America can send the navy seals to get rid of bin laden, they can surely use their brains to figure out that they are living in a very dangerous society who live anD use guns on a daily basis. Piers and Michael Moore need to look at what is happening in other countries. Have they not seen the hatchet, knife attacks on school children in Asia earlier this year? It has happened multiple times in multiple countries. Guns or no guns, these crazy idiots who want to kill people will find a way. The gun is just the medium they are using. If all the guns were taken away from citizens tomorrow I guarantee that these horrible events would still happen. There would just be a different medium used to perform their unthinkable acts.

This conversation is missing the point. The second amendment was created to prevent government and the military from engaging in tyranny by allowing the citizens to own weapons equal to what the military. An unarmed citizenry is defenseless against the potential abuses of force. I own guns to protect my family from abuses of power.

From "Wounded but not dead and now Firing Back"

All comparisons are odious, but this is an odious subject so let's finally go to England, where I grew up. I still feel safer there than I do here in spite of this: every Saturday in this idyllic country, thousands of drunken lunatics stumble out of pubs and set about punching each other in the head as they lurch off to soccer matches trying along the way to kick each other in the balls, bite and stab one another, and then, once in the stadium, throw hard objects at their enemies across the field. These are the amateurs. The professionals, to quote from an article in the Observer, "hunt in packs, fueled by cocaine, hooked on violence and occasionally wielding chains. Some are as old as 65. They use mobile phones and the internet to arrange showdowns with rival 'firms' at agreed locations away from prying CCTV cameras and police surveillance."

As a tiny island nation, we massacred our way across the globe until we conquered so much of it that "the sun never set on the British Empire." Well, of course, it did, eventually, but my point is that we are a far more violent people than you are. We love violence! Nothing makes us happier! (Actually not me, I'm a coward.) And yet the murder rate in Britain is five times less than in the U.S. One only has to walk past a pub at closing time to feel pretty certain that if British drunks and psychos had access to handguns, the ratio would go the other way. Gun control works. If America is the "greatest country on earth", it should try to do as well as its vicious old colonial enemy.

Does CNN stand for Circlejerk News Network? This isn't fair or balanced, Moore and Morgan are both just patting each other on the back about how bad guns, aka inanimate objects, are big and scary to them and should be illegal. Meanwhile, they are uneducated on guns and what they do "know" is incredibly biased with inflated stats. Sickening. At least they could have a pro-guns person on the show.

This whole question about why Americans refuse to reign in the guns after yet another horrible tragedy... Americans just don't like to tell themselves 'no.' No matter what irrefutable evidence is available, Americans don't want to say no to themselves about cigarettes, drugs, riding motorcycles w/out a helmet, overheating, abuse of alcohol or matter the harm that any of these things cause to ourselves and to others directly or indirectly. We want what we want...and we can.t tolerate anyone telling us no even for our own good and definitely not for the sake of others. Having freedom carries with it responsibility.

Hey there PRO GUNS, sounds like you're an anarchist. I'm actually quite patriotic. I love America and am thankful for the rights and privileges Americans take for granted. As for economic policy, I'm not sure how Communism ties into this debate. But while we're on the subject, I think people should be free to watch violent movies/TV/video games/internet if they so desire. People should be allowed to own guns. However, gun sales should be regulated & monitored. Private citizens should not have the legal wherewithal to purchase military-grade weapons & armor without fear of prosecution & confiscation. Regulated markets = happy capitalism. Unregulated markets = chaos, anarchy, coercion, and exploitation. Listen, man: grow up and stop throwing around this "unpatriotic" nonsense. Instead, try making an intelligent case.

What would you expect from a Brit who has no concept of our country's history other than those red-neck rifle totting rural farm boys who became the heroes of WW Two and saved the British monarchy. America's knowledge and privilege of personal firearm ownership is where our freedoms started and what allows us to rise up and protect the rest of the world. Virtually every Swiss male owns a high powered military styled rifle and many are full automatic versions. Yet they have a very low murder rate. Hows that compute Piers and Michael?

Mental Health is truly unable to help in the situation with the mass shooting in Colorado. You cannot force individuals to take medications unless they are assessed as danger to self and others. The day of the killing, he would have been assessed and placed on a 5150 hold. However, if he says the correct things in the hospital, he will be released within 72 hours. So what next? 99% of people, who kill, other than depression and forms of rage, do not have a mental illness as classified by the DSM-IV. What is important is to determine what our culture creates that people feel they have the right to take the lives of others. There seems no respect for life, human or any other. There seems no respect for our environment. I believe this has a lot to do with so many killings in the US

This would be true if Holmes was actually diagnosed with a mental illness but because everything was premeditated, he knew what he was doing. And the way health care is set up in the States, he wouldn't have received the proper medical attention anyway because he wouldn't have been able to afford it. It's easy for someone like Holmes to fall through the cracks because of the easy access to guns in combination with a poor health care system. The U.S. needs to clean itself up.

I think we should have stricker laws on owning a gun and buying amo. Have the gun owner go through a through psychiatric evaluation several times before issuing a license. Just as we have our teens take a driving course before we allow them to drive. I am getting more and more disappointed in living in America as it is. Thank you so much, Piers and Anderson, for addressing this all important issue of guns in the US. I think other countries are more mature, and we are still intellectual infants in our insistence to have our guns. My parents were murdered by a crazy man with a gun-who should have never been allowed to have one. America has so much to learn. It's very sad how Americans argue for their own destruction. Piers, I applaud your efforts to address the insanity. Unfortunately Americans will not grow up-primitive thinkers who defend what is for their own undoing.

Obviously, Piers only wanted 1 side of the conversation. Why? Because the last time he had someon that was pro-gun on his show, he made Piers look bad. If you want a debate you should put both sides up so you can get a full perspective. Guns are not the problem, people are the problem. Piers' question on why we can have some magic wand to find crazy people, ask Israel how hard it is to find a suicide bomber. Mr. Moore's statement that Americans are scared that is why we cling to guns, but Mr. Moore is using scare tactics to increase gun control. I'm sure Mr. Moore believes that if you take away all the guns from citizens then everyone is safe. Really? I guess that worked for Hitler, works for China, works for Iran, works for North Korea, works for all countries that want to eliminate freedom and obtain total control of it's people. Why not ask the question to the ultimate federal agency, the FBI, about gun control and see what they say? Oh, sorry, the FBI has already done the research and found the guns in the hands of legal citizens reduces crime. Mr. Moore, you commented about guns being mostly in sububan areas and why would you need guns in a suburban area. Isn't Aurora, CO in a suburban area? Does Aurora have laws about concealed carry? Apparently criminals don't care and are happy to target areas where people are unarmed. This was a ridiculous show, get both sides.

Yeah!. It's all BS. I know some idiot will say if you don't like it here go somewhere else. The typical idiot response. But I'm surprised myself to have come around to Moore's way of thinking. If one suffers we all suffer. The fact that we don't feel that way does, in fact, make us inferior to several other countries in many ways. Mexico?! Middle East?! That's the comparison?!! Frankly, any dummy who says " Go elsewhere if you don't like it here" , if they're paying the way I'd be quite happy to go to Iceland or Wales or Canada. I bet if Fat Boy Moore were beiing shot at in that theater like a sitting duck, as were the others, he'd have wished for a GUN to fire back and stop that deranged coward. Get real all you stupid liberals. Better yet, when there's a crazzy or a druggie shooting up the place, just go right to them and tell them you think no one should have a gun and you'd really like them to reconsider. Maybe after they empty all their amo on you, the rest of us can just walk away. One of our state legislators was in the Luby's cafeteria in Kileen, Texas when a gunman came in and began randomly shooting people, Her Parents were both killed along with about 10 or 11 others. Her gun was in her car because at the time it was against the LAW to bring a gun into a public building. Guess what? That shooter didn't give a crap about the LAW. Thanks to her we now have a concealed carry law. She testified to the other state legistators that if she had been able to bring in her gun in she would have been able to stop that nut and it would have saved a lot of lives, including her parents. During the debate on the concealed carry law, she went to each of legislator as they were seated at their chamber desks and pointed at each and every one of them with two hands held together as if holding a gun and put it RIGHT IN THIER FACE. They got to feel what it's like to have no place to go with someone about to blow their head off. It was very effective because that's the way it REALLY is. Too bad the stupid liberals all over the country don't have the same demonstration done to them. My advice...get a gun. The criminals and druggies have theirs and they will use them with impunity, while law abiding citzens will use them in self defense of themselves or thier fmilies.

(Something i wrote about gun laws in our country, in fairness please read fully)
    By Greg Jones:
Amendment #2 is, "the right to bear arms"...
intended to PROTECT homes and, yet its also CAUSING HARM
none the less some, will still disregard what i say
probably say something dumb, like i'm somehow "anti-USA"
all because I've chosen to EVALUATE... the way Amendment 2 is playin out now-a-days.
...Cause frankly it is somewhat out of date.
And like it or not gun laws ARE outdated AND out of hand...
easy access to semi-automatic weapons is not what the "Fore Fathers" planned.
I'm sure its never what they intended or had in mind,
    that every other gun CRIME,
would start off with a LEGAL purchase of some kind.
So its time to acknowledge all these guns in circulation...
...I'm holdin accountable the National Rifle Association,
    IRRESPONSIBLE is their participation,
in these loose gun laws which only help facilitate murders, assasinations.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not sayin their the one's pullin the trigger...
But the way gun rates are STRONG, lets just say they the ones who "steroid deliver".
However, I don't think they condone those who attempt to abuse,
Amendment number 2, by putting it to malicious use...
Still, their choice to neglect, the real life consequence
of their overly Pro Amendment 2 intent, is something I can't respect.
Because it disgusts me to think, that just to idolize "arm bear-ing"...
Statistically, there is almost one gun for every person in this country w/out the need for sharing.
That right there is fact. And should indicate the impact that,
these lack of gun laws have. To me its sad... how that can be
and still the NRA turn the other cheek
when one begins to speak, about the gun violence tearing our inner-cities.
But i guess, why would they care?...
Sometimes I wonder if their lack of compassion for human life is because their unaware,
of just where all these guns are ending up...
Do they REALLY THINK only responsible people get them and use them to hunt?!
Naw, bet that's what they TRY to believe,
in order to feel contempt with reality... lol they define "naive"!
Or maybe some are defining GREED,
those be the ones that realize what's going on but too concerned with "GREEN"
to remorse about all the "RED", I'm talkin bout the bloodshed
    that occurs,
even teens can get their hands on guns with just a few words...
imagine 15 year olds just a phone call away,
from acquiring a hand gun and then off they are to spray.
The point of all this is bring reality to surface,
and hopefully gettin people to realize that bein LIBERAL WHEN IT COMES TO GUNS aint worth it
    So reflect on the past.
    Columbine, V-Tech... reflect on that!..
Theater massacre, heavy guns and ammunition,
that type of artillery gathered LEGALLY?!... NRA what's your decision?
...when it comes to how you'll control your politicians?!
And thus, influence on what the laws are to become,
specifically in regards to the difficulty of acquiring a gun...
or when it comes to unnecessary laws like Stand Your Ground
which leaves FAR TOO MUCH to subjective views, clearly a law that should be stripped down.
All in all yall need to get it together, cause your NOT making safety better...
with your foolish SELFISH gun control decisions, and you sure AREN'T being true to REAL American values & traditions
... which would VALUE THE SAFETY of ALL its citizens...
POOR, MINORITY, ADULT, or INNOSCENT... not just those behind white-picket fence.
So obviously, if that means slightly altering, the "bear arms" ideology,
then so be it!! That's what shoulda BEEN happened,
maybe then we can at least help prevent so much tragic gun madness.

Roses are red, Violets are blue,
      I defend my rights with a seven-point-six-two.

You're edgy, I get it. But the intent of the forefathers could just as easily be interpreted as "the citizenry should have access to top of the line military grade weaponry." People make the flintlock argument, forgetting that those were the pinnacle of warfare at the time. This interpretation has weight due to statements from our forefathers, such as "tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government and illegal for the citizenry."

Remember, this is the same country that had it's military open fire on college students. Even more recently, an american citizen (admittedly, one with terrorist connections) was killed by an unmanned drone without the need for due process. The government did this. We even have new laws in effect that make declaring martial law even easier, removing the concept of checks and balances. Never think that we couldn't become a dictatorship.

I think that we ought to disarm all Americans. Criminals would then have to go to Mexico or some other black market arms dealer within the U.S. to get their assult weapons. This would also provide, for the criminal, many more defenseless targets within the U.S. Mr. Moore had one great idea however; no more appearances for him on this matter. It's to bad that the only person who had any real facts by the droves with him was run off last night and not allowed to hardly speak. I'm talking about Dr. Lott. Just want to say that I agree with what was said tonight. No one truly needs all of these automatic weapons and the ease with which ammunition is available is truly unconscionable. Laws need to be changed to make these type of purchases at a minimum re-portable to authorities and the ammunition maybe like the comedian said at a price tag that is out of reach for the average individual. Something needs to change!

If every liberal in this country gives up their cars, I will give up my firearms and so would most others. Why? Because we know it would never happen. People like to tell others what they should do, but never look at their own issues. Raise your kids right and teach them to respect other people and these killings will disappear. The problem isn't guns, it's parents. Don't believe me? Go into ANY 3 high school in the country and I bet that 2, if not all 3, have some serious problem children with garbage parents who let them do what they want.

Who had an automatic weapon??? all the firearms that were shown or used were semi-auto..if anything, automatic weapons are less accurate due to recoil. the only issue i think would be the amount of ammo.

Ok if "I got mine, you got yours" is wrong, then why doesn't hollywood and Michael "Eats like a king" Moore take the lead and donate all their salaries OVER 1 million a year to improving the country. If hollywood people donate everything over 1M a year to help this country, I will do the same.

you idiots-do you think gun laws are going to effect the criminals and crazies?? You think people are going to say oh I better not go shoot those people in the shopping center because the gun laws say no one should own a gun. This is lunacy. Ask yourself, would you put a sign outside your home which said this home is NOT protected by a fire arm? There is your anwer. And I am getting sick of people claiming socialized healthcare is the answer when the truth is, socialized healthcare is garbage. Go to Canada and see for yourself. You will wait 10 hours to be referred to a PAY healthcare office. Wake up you are hooked on Hopium.

I accidently came across your show and stayed in tune for the past two nights because of your Bloomberg interview and Michael Moore's appearance. Thank you and your producers for putting this important issue on the table. I am confident many other people are grateful for your coureagous work and are not going to engage in emotional, puerile rhetoric, but instead will support organizations that will reduce the sale of talon bullets, assault weapons etc. Chris Rock's idea of $5, 000 a bullet would be a good start.

      Speaking of emotional, puerile rhetoric...

Do you even know what a Black Talon bullet is? How about the fact that they're not really made anymore? Do you know what defines an assault weapon? Does Piers Morgan? Do our politicians?

A few years ago, there was a push for more gun control. There was a list of things that were not going to be allowed on any civilian owned firearm. The classic example was a barrel shroud. When asked what that was, the lead proponent for the gun control legislation responded, "I think it's the shoulder-thing that goes up."

Ummm... you mean a collapsible stock? Is that what you're banning? Because a barrel shroud is a piece that goes around the barrel, allowing a gripping surface that is protected from barrel heat.

Laws that affect everyone need to be made from an educated point of view, and I find the entirety of Congress to be uneducated, bickering children. Learn something about firearms. Go to a range; many have rental pieces, and fairly reasonable ammunition prices. If you learn how to use a gun, you will not be afraid of them in law-abiding citizens' hands anymore.

Piers and all his superiority need to go away, back to England or anywhere that he can pontificate to his heart's delight. Or were they sick of him there also, so he had to appear in USA? His "interview" with Moore was merely a foil for promoting his own ignorance. He's never toured USA, knows zero, yet proclaims his personal ideology, supported by whatever fool at CNN is in love with his incompetence. He hasn't been a good interviewer on any subject, 3rd rate. He presumes we are sooo primitive compared to his enlightened self. Guess what? USA revolted against England, and won. USA for all its faults remains the premier country in the world; Britain is way behind. Yes, excessive guns/ammo need better controls, but the "right to bear arms" means self-defense. USA gets to do that. Repressive societies deny that immediately upon taking control. Responsible gun owners are not psychos as Holmes is, and the others who've done horrible attacks. Maybe far more resources should be directed to mental heath interventions. All the research points out there's no way to ID a total nutcase like him, though, or the fellow in Norway, or other places where a psycho did harm. These evens are anomalies, not common. There's a lesson there, citified ones...
Whoever hired Piers and keeps him on should find a new line of work, far from present duties.

I've had the same thoughts and cannot understand why it's so difficult to change what is logical, humane, and justifiable. We live in very different times. I agree that if our forefathers had crystal balls, they would want us to adapt our ammendments and laws to the lives of the people they are supposed to protect today. This is logical thinking! Please continue to lend your voice to find solutions for this massive problem. Thank you Piers for continuing this conversation and expressing your views also.

People posting guns don't kill people, people kill people -I have to state- Get Real, if tougher restrictions need to happen because people USE guns to kill people so Yes Guns KILL PEOPLE. The person who wants to hurt others can get their hands on assault rifles, 6,000 rounds of ammo. – ARE YOU KIDDING ME! These should be banned, who needs these types of arms? WHO These need to stay with the military only!

Oh One More thing – Dr.s Need a Nationwide database for Psychosomatic Drug Prescriptions... So a person isn't doping up on tons drugs by skipping on to the next Dr. same with the damn pain pill poppers! Just makes me sick. As well if a person commits horrific acts, and found to be on multiple prescriptions then at least no more excuses for the Dr. who prescribed the drugs and should be held accountable.

I love how moore explained how many firearms there are in America, and such. Then asked why a person in a suburb needs a pistol. Crime affects everyone. Every single American has a right to self defense, most violent crimes involving weapons are not done by your concerned citizen. Banning firearms will not prevent crimes being committed by firearms, it will just limit the average law abiding citizens right to defend themselves. As for the Colorado shooting, its tragic, but banning firearms is not the answer. I'd also like to point out, a "assualt rifle"by defintion is a weapon that is fully auto-selective fire(IE military grade m4 rifles that fire burst and semi) what was used was a semi auto rifle.

If Americans really want change they're going to have to do it themselves. Say what you want about the Tea Party (and I have) but they effectively took over the Republican Party. Liberals and progressives will have to start a similar movement. As long as we have these plastic candidates protecting the status quo, nothing will ever change. Obama is a coward who looks for political cover before he takes a dump. Mitt Romney is even worse. I reject them both but they don't exist in a vacuum. These are ELECTED officials. Mr. Moore, we ae NOT SCARED. We are mad. We will not put up with this circus anymore. We will NOT give up our guns nor will we follow insane elected leaders. Michael Moore did a wonderful job tonight discussing gun violence in America and also discussing how politicians do absolutely nothing about it because they're too afraid of the NRA and gun obsessed Americans. Politicians should never be afraid to stand tall and talk bravely and honestly about gun violence. Seeing paranoid stupid people post how they love their guns more than they care about the victims of the massacre and other gun violence victims is exactly why politicians need to do something, be the responsible sensible adults and do something to make your citizens safer and protect them from irresponsible, unstable, dangerous stupid people.

He can't help himself, he is a Liberal with an agenda and, like a former smoker, he has to proclaim his truth to the world. I think it is in his DNA.

I'm getting tired of trigger happy people stating a century ago crime was at an all time low without gun laws. Well of course it was because the WORLD WASN'T AS POPULATED A CENTURY AGO – DUH!!! Think about it. In addition, guns weren't as technologically advanced a century ago either, compared to what they are now. So the whole century ago in comparison to present day has been refuted and that argument can be dropped now because I'm living in this century – not the past. Until politicians start boycotting the NRA, gun laws won't get changed.

I mentioned politicians as a whole without singling out a particular party and/or political belief because it just gets messy.

I can take the word “liberalism” right out of context and use it on both sides of the coin.

One party can say “I should have the LIBERTY to walk around my neighborhood without having to look over my shoulder every 5 seconds to see if a gun has been whipped out.” (Which ='s Michael Moore commenting on being scared).

The other party can say “I should have the LIBERTY to carry a gun.”

So let’s just take out the whole liberal aspect of this because that whole word and concept is being misused and abused. Obviously, from the example I just gave, both parties are liberal as they want the FREEDOM to do what they want, when they want and hopefully according to legal, social standards. I don’t care how hard or easy it is for guns to be obtained legally or illegally or if it’s mentioned by a particular political party – not the issue.

My concern is gun control should be a MORAL obligation on EVERY politician’s agenda regardless of party association and/or political belief because my question right now is: What is so UNITED about the United States? I don’t see any unity at all.

The other party can say “I should have the LIBERTY to carry a gun.”

Actually, that would be the same party saying both statements. If I don't have the liberty to carry a gun, I will not have the liberty to walk around my neighborhood without looking over my shoulder.

Guns developed almost or over a century ago that are still widely used today:
      Colt M1911A1 (.45 ACP autoloading semi-automatic pistol, 1911)
      Browning Auto-5 (12-gauge tube-fed semi-automatic shotgun, 1905)
      Browning M2 (.50 BMG belt-fed machine gun, 1921)

These are just a few designed by John Moses Browning. I can find more if you want, but the difference in technology is honestly minimal.

Sorry Piers, I am now watching the Bloomberg interview, which is also good, and reemphasizes my point. Should "the people" place their trust in the Government on what do to with guns on a two-year election cycle (at least with respect to the House)? Should our "rights" depend on the political whims of the moment? That might be okay for piddly things like selective tax credits, but the right to gun ownership is fundamentally different. That problem, the distrust of our current government, is an example of "why" Americans might be resistant, in a very general sense, to major changes in gun laws.

FINALLY, a sane rational educated comment. Restores my faith in Americans.

Nobody in their right mind would interpret the 'right for malitia to bear arms' as the right to kill your neigbours, co-workers, fellow citizens.

10,000+ murders per yr, as Bloomberg said, 40,000 over the next 4 yrs. Is that the USA you want? Good for Piers for trying(why he bothers what with all the hatred on this message board who knows)& Michael for trying to point out the gun culture of Americans. Even Tony Blair last nite alluded to "we in Britain don't have the same history, or culture as Americans."
The difference in other Western Nations is that even if they are allowed legally to carry guns the citizens don't want to. That is the part of the American culture that needs to be changed.

300 million guns in the USA. What a frightening statistic. You think that gives you freedom & protection. As far as I am concerned that would cause me to be afraid to walk out my front door.

Pretty much all the gun violence in the States is domestic violence, gang violence, drive by shootings, innocent people caught in crossfire. Exactly what percentage of the 10,000+ murders each year were caused by someone who is rational protecting their property. I would guess close to zero.

I find it extremely aggravating that as a society we have gotten to the point where we must blame and punish everyone else for the actions of one; when people run stop signs people cry out for stop lights, and when people drive drunk and injure or kill someone, we demand to know where they got the alcohol from so that we can chastise them as well. People seem to think that banning something automatically makes everything better; if people drink too much lets ban alcohol, if they die from drugs lets ban whatever new drug seems to be at fault. Growing up the problem was gangs tagging, and as a result adults had to wonder the isles of stores begging someone to come and open the cages that were meant to keep kids from stealing paint, and although this inconvenienced and irritated law abiding people, it had no effect on the amount of tagging. Politicians love to say how we should not be afraid of terrorist and that we should go about our daily lives as normal; however politicians these days are the cause of more distress than any terrorist group in this country. People should understand that while you may believe that banning guns or creating a national registry will prevent future gun crime, the fact is that criminals don’t abide by the law (hence the label of criminal), and while those of us that do abide by the law are being harassed by new rules and regulations, criminals will still be out doing whatever they like and ruining others’ lives in the process. Something we should all remember is that while you may favor a ban on guns, smoking, drugs, fast food, coke, violent movies or any of the other numerous things people rally against these days, at some point the banning or restricting of items will eventually target something you care about. The idea that banning semi-auto guns or so called assault weapons will make us safer seems highly unlikely, even the London police said recently that despite all the expense and their efforts, things like busses are still highly vulnerable to bombings. These news agencies don’t seem to understand is that while 6000 rounds of 50 caliber ammo is a lot, the same amount of 22 ammo isn’t that much; and where should we draw the line on magazine capacity, because though my guns aren’t high capacity guns I can reload awfully fast, because that’s how I was taught.

hmmm... how about weapons grade plutonium? That would be annoying for the government to not let me have that.
How about storing all my weapons in a tank that I can drive around town, just for security?

This argument unfortunately has no merit as neither of these items are being argued against their restriction, and whether you know it or not, many people collect tanks and other weapons for historical reasons; even though they more often than not never fire a single live round of ammunition trough them. Plus machine guns and explosives are not available to the general public and have not been for many years, people must get permission to purchase and own these items after undergoing stringent background checks and being approved by the local police chief or sheriff. People who refer to weapons grade plutonium have simply been watching too much TV; the vast majority of people in the world wouldn’t know it if they saw it, nor would people have any idea of what to do with it if they had some. With all due respect, this makes as much sense as Mr. Moors saying that it takes fifteen minutes to load a musket; the vast amount of people who died from the founding of this country up until the muskets replacement goes to show that muskets are not the simply weapon described by those who are trying to push an agenda with lies that the second amendment applies only to militias (since there are so many of those still around) and that semi-auto is the same as machine gun.

I loved last night's show. Michael Moore is the best and many very relevent issues were raised. When you listen to the stats with regards to killings in the U.S. compared to other countries, this should be the proof that the likes of Senator McCain said he needed to be convinced that access to weapons is a causal factor in the number of killings. Sadly, some people are just not going to be convinced no matter what evidence is presented. Michael questioned why the U.S. has such a high number of killings, what makes the U.S. different from other countries, some of which have had a violent past (e.g. Germany)? These are a very compelling questions and I thought about them while trying to get to sleep last night. I tried to think of factors that are unique to the U.S. that might explain this and came up with the following. Michael mentioned that fear is a factor and I agree but from where does this fear originate? I can only guess. I think racism is a factor for as much as the U.S. has made great strides with regards to racism, it still exists. This contributes to fear but it also leads to high levels of anger from all races. There is a wide economic divide right now and that adds to feelings of resentment and anger. There is also a mind set that although not unique to the U.S., is more deeply rooted with Americans. This has to do with the view that democracy is to be protected at any and all cost. That is one of the reasons weapons are seen to be a right and of course accounts for why the U.S. seems to be almost constantly at war. Finally, Americans appear to be unwilling to listen to 'outsider's' views and advise. They see themselves as living in the greatest country in the world and therefore how dare any 'foreigner' think he or she knows better than they. Piers, you have experienced this yourself. Look at how many viewers have taken offence to your views on gun control and told you to go back to Britain. There is a level of ignorance here. In what other country do we hear the term "redneck"? I would like to know how Americans define that term and how many of them fall into that category.

I am disappointed in the tone of some of these responses to Michael Moore and Piers Morgan. I think Mr. Moore raised an important question, "Why are we so abusive to one another?" What is the result of all of this rancor and animosity that is so pervasive? I came to this posting in hopes to find thoughtful people addressing this question. I pray that Mr. Morgan continues to explore this issue. I think his citizenship is immaterial; he is human and we share the planet with him and he with us. We need to figure out what keeps driving our collective abusive behavior.

Well put Linda. The tone of so many responses demonstrates the very point I tried to make in my response and that is that Americans are intolerant of other points of view and strike out in a nasty way against them. Ironically,in our attempt to understand why there is so much violence in the U.S., some of the causes of this violence are evident in many of the responses, namely, anger, fear and intolerance. To the viewers who think Piers should go back to Britain, he has as much right to be here as anyone. Let us not forget how many of our ancestors came from Britain.

Michael Moore does not even have an arguement when he says "what if it were your children Mr. President?" If the president's children were watching a movie at a public movie theatre there would be security EVERYWHERE and DAYS in advance. Moore is a collectivist tool that needs to go back to Canada. He even admits that he is a collectivist in his video. Go watch it again if you missed it. His agenda, along with all of the other liberal collectivists, is to fundamentally change the way Americans live by implementing laws that take liberty away from a free society. Moore and his buddies would rather control your life than allow you to have control over your own life. I can sum it up in one short sentence. The liberals want to protect you by taking away the things that protect you. It is MY job to protect MYSELF and MY family. It is NOT the job of ANYONE else and I will NOT RELY ON ANYONE ELSE TO DO SO.

Michael Moore isn't from Canada; he's from Flint, Michigan. As for the word "liberal", again, the word is getting misused and abused. You're a "liberalist" too because you want the "liberty", the "freedom" to keep your gun. If there were better gun control laws, you wouldn't feel the need to HAVE to PROTECT YOUR family. As for this conspiracy theory you mention about Michael Moore and his buddies controlling people's lives..... Would you please elaborate as to where your information comes from to base your opinion on? Do you know names and if so, please post the names of the people who are, according to you, apparently conspiring with Michael Moore to control people. Word of advice: quit being silly.

Thanks Michael, it's comforting to know there is at least one reasonable voice out there in TV land. I believe we should start with a 3-pronged solution. 1. END THE DRUG WAR (putting gangs out of biz)(this would close prisons as well-killng 2 birds with one stone) 2. Illigalize any type of miitary assault weapon. 3. Illegaize military grade ammo such as magazines and being able to purchase large rounds of ammunition of any kind. I believe this will begin to put an end to this mass mayhem and mass incarceration and mass destruction that has become this country. But just the tip of the iceberg, then we need to work on mass helping people socioeconomically and mass getting rid of hate mongering Republicans and their mouthpieces proliferatng mass fear. Ugh, when can we start?

      1. Sure, I'll agree with that. We'll need vigilance to ensure that once criminals lose that foothold, they don't regain another.
      2. Define "assault weapon."
      3. "Military grade ammo like magazines"? You really have no idea what you're talking about, do you? A magazine is not ammo. It holds ammo. There are many, many varieties. Example: For the AR-15, you can purchase 10, 20, 30, 50, 75, or 100 round box magazines. That being said, only the 10, 20, and 30 are reliable at all. The larger ones jam a lot. Had Holmes used a smaller magazine, things could have been worse.

I should even ask you to define military grade ammo. Did you know that military ammo is often inherently less lethal that police and civilian ammo? Military ammo has a full metal jacket, often with a steel core. This provides a great amount of penetration, but since the bullet retains its shape, the cavitation of the wound is limited. These bullets are designed for maximum range and to penetrate armor or cover.

Police ammo is frangible, to prevent over penetration. Upon impact with a target, the bullet breaks into smaller pieces, which will not travel as far into the body. However, these pieces each create a separate cavitation channel, causing massive internal trauma. These bullets are designed NOT to penetrate people or cover, as an effort to keep bystanders or hostages safe.

Civilian ammo is usually used for hunting, and is often controlled expansion rounds. These will flatten out and "mushroom" a little in the air, and a lot once they hit the target. This creates a large wad of metal tumbling through a target, causing a large amount of cavitation and, subsequently, a massive amount of blood loss. These bullets are designed to bring down a large creature as quickly as possible, preventing necessary tracking, and allowing a hunter to mercifully kill the animal as soon as possible.

Your argument would gain strength from proper research.

Wow readt this message board & see how much hatred Americans can spew at 1 Brit & 1 American. Nothing Americans hate more then someone from another country actually having an opinion.

Defend your guns, have 10,000+ murders a yr & continue to tell yourselves you are the greatest country in the world.

As long as Americans have a gun mentality you will never change. In other Western 'civilized countries' we don' protect ourselves with guns. How about protecting your property with alarm systems, lights, cameras, etc. I wonder how many of your 10,000 citizen killed every year were protecting property.

I live in a city of 3 million people. I have never seen a Gun Shop, gun show or even had the slightest desire to won a gun to protect myself.

Tragedy in Colorado, how many Americans have been killed in gun violence since last Friday? After last week what do Americans do...go out & buy more guns. How sad for your country.
Michael Moore, Piers, & Michael Bloomberg are 1000% right, but for some unknown reason Americans cling to their guns, & feel some reason to shoot each other in the streets of your cities.

Maybe you should try a simplistic approach, you ban trans fats, sugar, maybe you should ban bullets.

Well said CANADIAN. If the amount of anger and hatred spewed in many of these responses is indicative of the feelings of most Americans, I think that answers the question Michael posed last night – why so many killings in the U.S.? From where do all these extremely negative emotions stem? The lack of receptiveness to an "outsider's" opinion is shocking. I blush from embarassment (and I'm not even American) when I read the comments telling Piers to go back to Britain. This is just plain ignorance. Perhaps ignorance is the root cause of the violence in the U.S.

I agree with your entire post. What I find disgusting from some of the posts, are all the gun toters are more upset about the possibility of having their guns taken away or tighter gun control laws possibly being implemented. They have absolutely failed at showing a pinch of remorse or compassion for those clinging to life in a hospital, for those who suffer from the loss of a loved one, or for those who might endure years of therapy in order to cope from this single event. IT'S DISGUSTING and I'm absolutely appalled at the lack of healthy emotions such as sadness and remorse and compassion and the display of unhealthy emotions such as anger about possibly having a gun control laws – it's SICKENING!

NO!! What is disgusting is your lack of understanding. You just don't get it! And probably never will. What I have found interesting about your country is that even though according to your 1st Ammendment of Free Speech, people aren't actually allowed to have an opinion!! I can have an opinion as long as it is the same as yours. Like the saying goes- If I wanted your opinion I would have given it to you. And in that vein of Free Speech, just because one has the right to Free Speech I feel that being a Human Being trumps that. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Same goes for guns as far as I am concerned. Just because you can buy a big ass gun doesn't mean you should because really, the only thing a gun is good for and the soul purpose of a gun is to mame and kill-FULL STOP!! And it doesn't matter what Nationality one is when is comes to someone's life. I choose to preserve life not wave a gun and say- well the 2nd Amendment say's I can have a gun so I'm gonna have a gun! Again, just because you can doesn't mean you should. We used to stone people or hang people for having different ideas does that mean we should still? It is about evolving not falling back on some antiquated right. If the perpetrator in Aurora had walked into that Movie theatre with a knife instead of guns and ammo- things would have ended very differently. And also the crack about the spelling of "color". Where I come from we spell it "colour". Nothing wrong with it, it's just how we roll. Doesn't make me better, just slightly different. A point you seem to be missing, among others. Gun control and the talking of it is NOT PROPAGANDA! Just trying to make things better is all.

You are getting excited and emotional. Take a deep breath.

I understand that the concept of personal firearms being widely available is scary to a lot of people. I also understand that there are quite a few people on my side of the argument who come across as overzealous, gun-toting rednecks. There are insults and insensitivity to each other and the victims flying from both sides of this argument.

I am pro-gun. Like many people who are, I do enjoy shooting for sport and fun. But that's not why I'm pro-gun. In your words, a gun has only one use: to maim and kill. I'd like to drop one of those right now; a gun can maim someone, but that's not it's intent. Many weapons can maim, but only a few are designed to. So, a gun's use is to kill. It is a weapon. Why would we want people having them?

Let's take a scenario; we're going to remove guns from existence. Now, I assume you're a woman by your name. I am a 6'3" 280 lb man, so I'm going to assume you're smaller than me. I am now able to express power over you. If I chose to do so, it doesn't matter what your rights are, what the law is, nothing. I have chosen to be a criminal and therefore the law does not matter to me. I'm bigger and stronger, so I am better than you and have the ability to do anything I want to you. Doesn't sound that great right?

        July 26, 2012 at 1:37 pm | Report abuse |
      • Guest

There are other alternatives to self defense, such as self defense classes. Using your scenario, a woman can also carry a weapon, although use rubber bullets or shot shells. Yes these too can be lethal, however, the intent isn't to kill; only to stun in order to get away. Statistics show that if a woman is armed to defend herself, the attacker would knock her out or knock the gun out of her hand and kill her with it anyways.

Also, I never once mentioned 2A, I gave a perspective from a gun carrier and non-gun carrier perspective, outlining how both parties are considered LIBERAL, because pro-gunners on here were tossing the word around too freely toward those who believe gun control laws should be put in place. witsend obviously didn't get the gist of the message. You absolutely do have the right to bear arms and although I don't condone what Holmes did, that right also extends to him and he exercised that right but doing what he did. Therefore, I don't care if you bear arms, just do so RESPONSIBLY. Which means, if you bear arms RESPONSIBLY you are LIBERAL. If you choose to bear arms IRRESPONSIBLY, which you've stated you want to go above and beyond police, militia, SWAT, your government, which is anarchist, then I will have no problem putting you in the same category as Holmes.

And of course humans are not impulsive and inherently violent apes who can't and won't crack under tough economic times.
You can "edmacate" them and they won't feel the primal thrill of violence. Makes sense to me

It's the person, not the item they use to kill with that needs to be dealt with. Someone can kill you with a cell phone or a can opener or a fork. Do we outlaw all of these things as well. Of course not. Guns are not responsible for the death. It didn't pull the trigger, aim and kill someone all by itself. There are sick people that live amongst us, we can't control everyone and everything. You can't blame God either He gave us free will ).. Let's put the blame where it belongs its the INDIVIDUAL.Deal with it.

That's the best news I have heard all day – that Michael Moore is not going on any more TV shows. Maybe he will get mad and leave the country, along with all of the Hollywood elite who were going to leave the country when Bush got elected. Ow wait – they are still here. We just can't catch a break.

Google 'Charles Jaco fake news cast' if you want an idea of the type of journalistic integrity to be expected from CNN. Truth is CNN is a paper tiger, they have very low viewership. If you're looking for real news a better alternative might be someone like World Net Daily or other independent outlet.

First things first; take a look at all the trash being produced in Hollywood; this has an effect on people who already don't have all their cups in the cupboard; so much violence in movies and in computer games. Your country is suppose to be the land of the free; God save America; not arming yourselves from your fellow Americans. Travel more and see how the rest of the world is viewing this country; the land of the free (its a joke).

As "Social Media" and "Crowd Sourcing" grows, so does the violence in the world. The need to stand-out and be viral is causing many otherwise calm young adults to take extreme measures in a need to be noticed. A tech generated desire to be the next big thing. Shows like American Idol, The Cut, Chef Wars, Model Wars, The Next Great Artist, etc... are all about being glorified and anointed by a panel. There is no social emphasis on being part of a society, but more focus on being above the society. Guns and violence fit very well into this model to people who have mental illness or anger against others for their personal failures. American drug users are selfish with disregard to how many people died to get that drug in their hands. Parents in the last 30 years are to blame too. They allow themselves to be brainwashed by lawyers to sue the school for any little thing they feel was wrong. Young kids taunt and threaten teachers without fear since they know they are the almighty in the eyes of the law. Just like Lions in wild who are afraid of men, but Lions in reservation parks eat men. They lost the fear. Kids have lost the fear of God, Authority and Parents. They can have anyone arrested with a simple call claiming a threat. They grow up with a different way of dealing with problems. They feel special, socially protected by their crowd-sourcing websites and phones. Why would we want to protect each other when the other guy is the threat of my viral existence? My popularity depends on me doing stupid things and making them look great. Just as Art has hit the mud with Installations of garbage, recycled crap along with an artist making social-media statements of influence. In the end, the problem is not Guns, Mexico, Drugs or God. The problem is how America has allowed our children and some adults to become all about themselves and not about reaching out to help each other. It begins by looking in the mirror and REALLY examining who we are and how we can change to be more productive in healing ourselves from the bad influences . What are they? Only you can answer that. If you question yourself a times, start there ask why?

308.7 million people in the United States and one person goes off his rocker and everyone wants gun control. How stupid is that. As long as we have a population of this size, there is bound to be a small percentage that will kill no matter what. So with that said, and with our huge population, I think our murder statistics are fairly good considering all the factors. So please, take your gun control argument somewhere else. Possibly Russia or China if you prefer to live there.

And because it seems you have an intolerance for other people's opinions (you should really grow a bit of a thicker skin to combat that), and can't respectfully agree to disagree, and dictate others should move to Russia or China (which again is a racist remark), you seem to want to exercise your right to bear arms from 2A but not allow others to exercise their right to freedom of speech from the 1A.
I keep asking and no one has answered this yet, what is so UNITED about the United States?

Michael Moore is a FAT (in American terms, unacceptably disgusting) piece of FLESHY BLUBBER to look at. And, he fabricates ENTIRE ENCOUNTERS in his films (remember "Roger and Me"? HE NEVER MET ROGER).

Putting those two together equals STRIKE THREE (to use an American baseball term). He lies, and he's UGLIER than SIN.

Hence, his message **SHALL NOT** BE HEARD. Instead, it will be DIS-REGARDED AND BACKLASHED AGAINST, ESPECIALLY by people from Colorado, who are STAUNCH REPUBLICANS WHO LIKE THEIR GUNS. In FACT, Aurora, Colorado gun sales have SKYROCKETED since the shooting–just like after COLUMBINE (another movie in which he LIED–take them bowling? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?).

The bottom line is: whatever, PIGLET–your FATNESS makes you UN-WATCHABLE, (even more than Khloe Kardashian!) and therefore, your message is LOST. GO AWAY.

This type of behavior is just deplorable. We are an intelligent civilization and every person on this planet should be able to make their point in an intelligent manner, without resorting to racial slurs, name calling, bullying, browbeating others and throwing insults. That's just beneath you and dumbs society down as a whole. Your brand of behavior only demonstrates to others that you're unapproachable and full of hatred and further prevents issues from being resolved.

Vic, I am so sorry you think and feel the way you do. If you scroll up and re-read your posts, they're very destructive, volatile & yes, you do utter racial slurs & berate others posting on this message board whose opinions are different from yours; & to add to this list, you've made it more than evident you cyberstalk and harass too. I have no problem with you being proud of America, but you don't have to be so vulgar about it. One of your posts consists of telling a Brit to go back to England because he shouldn't be hosting an American News Program as he isn't native to America? What happened to "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses...." That only applies when they agree with you and help you gang up on people by verbally trashing others? Calling Canadians bacon eaters? Mind you, most Canadians would get a good laugh out of that one. Obviously you didn't hear about the Greek Olympian who was kicked of her team for making a similar comment on her Twitter account, except her comment pertained to Africans. It's a racial slur. Then after you're done displaying relational aggression & berating people, you turn around and falsely accuse people of being better than you? If you don't like me, you don't have to come here & subject yourself to read my posts. Or, do come here and bypass my posts by following your own advice which is what you've ordered others to do: IGNORE ME! I'm actually very concerned for you because one day, you're going to go too far & violate the wrong person & that person will go after you with a vengeance to slap you with a law suit & the evidence against you will be your own words. I realize I asked you to stop harassing me, which I still request; however, after your last post, I only decided to reach out with this last post to inform you that I do feel sorry for you & I have no hard feelings toward you & that I am very concerned for you. If you wish to continue to hate me & waste your time & energy on cyberstalking & harassing me on these message boards, then so be it, that is your choice.

People who compare guns to automobiles in their use as weapons seem to forget one thing: An automobile is designed as transportation, and may be used as a weapon (although a clumsy one). A gun is designed for only ONE purpose: to KILL as effectively and as efficiently as possible.

Gun restrictions are important to public safety.

Thank God i don't live in your retarded country. If you people think that walking around with a gun in your pocket is the answer than you truly are more stupid than i could have ever imagined. The homicide rate from guns in the USA is 7 times higher than in Canada. I guess it is not your fault however as you all live in a world of ignorance with no clue of how true civilized nations live. I can walk down the streets of my city in the middle of the night with no fears of getting is so far removed from any possible thought you would ever have. Do you know what happens in my country when people get ticked get a smack in the hurts.....but at least you wake up the next morning to be able to play with your kids. In my wildest dreams i could not imagine raising my kids in a country with so many losers that believe and care so much about owning a gun. I wish you all good luck....but for some reason i fear you gun lovers are all too stupid to know what to do with it if you found it. and one final is true you will never be able to stop events like what happened in matter what laws you pass...however more often than not....the people who get killed by guns happen to be the ones who are also holding a gun. When you are talking about an entire country you have to use the averages and there is no doubt that less guns in the streets would mean less gun killings of the avg run of the mill citizen who just wants to live their life, raise their kids and have a little fun along the way. You all have a long way to go before you really figure out what true living is really all about.

And sometimes, Canadians will even go so far as to shove a pie in their Prime Ministers face; that way, at least the slap comes with a little bit of a taste ;P (Google Jean Chretien). Americans can't even get that close to a their president, and when they do, they shoot the freedom fighters like Lincoln and Kennedy, and activists like King. Couldn't the assassins have just shoved a pie in their face instead? At least they'd still be alive! That's what some Americans don't understand about Canada. Americans throw around the word "socialism" (and often confuse it with communism) when referring to Canada, and countries like it, like it's a bad thing. Before throwing around words like "socialism" and "communism", at least learn the difference between the two because the person who pied Chretian didn't end up in front of a firing sqad (which is definitely communism). The pie thrower probably got charged with assault and had to pay a fine.

With a tough view on crime, 3 strikes you're out and in jail for life, open accessiblity for guns then obviously the US must be the safest place in the world with low crime rates, safe streets and low murder rates. Right? Does this describe the US properly? I don't think so. So the answer must be harsher penalties for criminals, more guns and tougher laws. Right? Maybe not. In Canada we have 35 million people and had a total of 600 murders nationally last year, about 150 of those by firearm. We're not perfect, no one is and I'm not trying to pretend otherwise.......... but we're on the right track with our gun control laws.

You bleeding heart liberals don't know what you are talking about. Did you see the video of the 2 black thugs that tried to rob the internet cafe? And granddad pops up and starts busting their butts. Legal armed citizens will help take care of the bad guys. They will think twice if they think someone might be armed. If they know nobody is armed because the gov't has banned all guns, Wow!! That makes it easy for the bad guys. Simple as that whether you want to admit it or not. Try coming down here to Texas and take our guns from us.

Well first of all, my heart isn't bleeding. As for the whole liberal word Americans keep tossing around: Canada is more to the right, right now, because Stephen Harper is a conservative, which is like your republicans. Americans have the Democrats and Republicans, Canada has the Bloc Quebecois, The Conservatives (equivalent to repubs/right wingers), The Liberals (middle of the road), The New Democratic Party (NDP) (equivalent to dems/left wingers), The Marijuana Party and The Green Party (environmentalists), among other kinds of parties. Brush up on the Canadian politics would ya? I don't need to see the internet cafe video because the majority of the U.S. is armed, so obviously that didn't make the thieves think twice because they still attempted to rob the place; so that theory's blown out of the water. I don't care what the end result was either because if people are desperate enough, they'll take what they want regardless if there's a gun or not, and if the thief has the gun, and they do think the owner of the store has a gun, the robbers will shoot first. That's just logic. And it isn't like the first time I've heard a pro-gun person invite people to take their guns away. Here's a better idea, why don't you leave your gun at home, come up to Canada and munch on some POUTIN (Bloc Quebecois), after LIBERALLY (Liberal Party) smoking a HEALTHY (NDP) dose of MARY-DO-YA-WANNA (Marijuana Party) and really INHALE (Clinton reference), while at the same time CONSERVING (Conservative Party) our ENVIRONMENT (Green Party) by drinking beer out of EDIBLE beer cans (Rhinoceros Party)! 😀

I also forgot to add, from the majority of the posts I've read on this message board, and from the interviews I've seen Piers Morgan conduct, no one is asking you to get rid of your guns and no one is threatening to take them away, which is something I think the pro-gunners are misunderstanding. What people are urging is the U.S. needs better gun CONTROL laws such as, and using James Holmes as the example: it's been reported James Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist, so, how was it possible for him to get a gun, when according to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, he should've been ineligible to own a firearm. Now, as a responsible gun owner (at least I hope you are), wouldn't you want something tweaked in the gun control law area to prevent someone like James Holmes from getting a gun? I hope your answer is yes. Unfortunately the U.S. has a poor health care system, so how would one go about a psychiatric screening in order to own a gun? Would someone be screened once a year, or every 3/6 months etc? Would a psychiatrist then notify the state informing them a patient isn't stable enough to own a gun? This is what politicians should be investigating so that someone like James Holmes can't get his hands on a gun. People aren't saying Americans need to get rid of guns, so quit taking it to that extreme. Canadians aren't saying get rid of your guns, because guns are legal here in Canada too. However, there are weapons and armor civilians in the U.S. simply do not need, and should only be available for police forces, SWAT, and army. People are only saying, tweak your gun control laws.

The Kardashians and Paris Hilton are talentless and people are more accepting of them over Michael Moore? Okay. Michael Moore challenges people to think and question certain belief systems. If it happens Michael Moore is causing you to question a belief system you grew up with, of course you're going to get upset because what you grew up believing to be true now may seem questionable, and that's why people get upset with him, because they don't like seeing holes poked in their beliefs. However, if you are confident and secure with what you believe, this guy wouldn't even bother you and therefore, that's why you are so bothered by Michael Moore, because you aren't so confident or secure about what you believe. Opposition is a good thing and that's why so many people are threatened by Michael Moore. There is nothing wrong with being mindful, aware and self-aware of your surroundings, how you and others fit into those surroundings, and always questioning what's going on around you.

I'm sick of the media sticking their noses were they don't belong. Guns don't kill people just like vehicles dont kill people. One bad apple ruins it for all of law abiding citizens. If you don't like Guns then don't buy one and dont come running to an armed person when you need protection from a rapist or a murderer. 2nd Amendment is our right and without it America Will be a war zone!

As I grieved for the people in the theater I also wanted someone to find a way to ask, during the discussions at a later time, why we can grieve, rightly so, for the victims here in the U.S. and yet we do not grieve for all the innocent men and women and children in Iraq and Afghanistan who have been terrified, injured, and killed by us? I agree that as a nation we have a problem, not only with our love of guns, but also our love of violence and power – until it happens to us. We have a disconnect when we talk about the weapons used in the theater, never thinking about what happens to civilians from the weapons our soldiers use in wars we initiate. There are better ways to achieve justice than turn our military might against civilians.

    DuhName...whatever your name....
If you're upset about more deaths due to drunk driving than deaths from firearms, then perhaps you need to attend a mother's against drunk driving meeting to find out how to prevent drunk driving.
If you're sick about where media sticks its nose, write a letter to the appropriate commission.
Consider that maybe there wouldn't be so many deaths from drunk driving if ERs weren't filled with gun shot victims – as in health care professionals would be able to tend to other patients.
If there were better gun control laws, your taxes might even go down because your police force wouldn't have to work so hard and could actually dedicate more time to clamping down on illegal gun activity.
Again, no one is saying get rid of your guns, only amend the amendment to bear arms responsibly.

Some people follow everything the 'gurus' teach. To a "T".

Others go against the grain. They challenge the status quo.

That's what I do. And that's how Ive made MILLIONS.

    The crazy thing is...

I have made millions using a simple, secret 'ethical' email marketing system...

Think about that for a second:

Someone made millions of dollars – over 7 figures – just from sending emails. And it's so simple, anybody can do it!

I formulated a system that allows you to build a true lifestyle business, where you can have the freedom you desire...

By creating a 'business machine' that works for you 24/7. All you have to do is oversee the system.

No product creation. No chasing clients or delivering services.

Watch the short video at the link below and get more info...

Skip the BS and jump right into getting results!

Plus act now and SAVE 85% OFF (normally $37)...

You literally get over $1.6K worth of training for just $5.60.

Check this out and lock in your savings here:

Wow! This is one of the few sites that actually cover virtually everything about Wealthy Affiliate. While it does have a lot of pros I agree about the con of information overload, especially as a first timer! I kinda wish I came to this website because I would have a lot more information to help me learn about it 🙂When I first enrolled with the WA I was caught out by the sheer workload and I realized I wasn’t clued up as much as I should be on certain internet topics. Did you feel the same when you first started out with them? How long did this confusion last for?I’m sort of finding my feet now but I still have a lot to learn.
