Kim Rhode on gun control, Olympic shooting: "The about responsibility, discipline, focus...that's really what we represent here"

Coming up this evening at 9 p.m., "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomes Olympian Kim Rhode for an insightful and candid conversation that comes amidst remarkable achievement in her particular discipline, double trap and skeet shooting.

Joining Piers Morgan in London, on the heels of a world record-tying performance, the guest is asked to share her unique perspective on the recent shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, CO:

"As someone who's a professional marksman," begins Morgan, "what do you think about the whole debate that's raging again about gun control and so on?"

A five-time Olympic medal winner and six-time national champion, Rhode sees no comparison between her craft, and the movie theater massacre of July 20th:

"I think it's really sad, too, that the news gets those lines blurred between the news and the sport," says the 33-year-old. "Really, the sport of shooting is about responsibility, discipline, focus. And that's really what we represent here at the Olympics."

Having won her first world championship title at the age of 13, Rhode grew up around shooting, seeing it as an activity of virtue, and integrity:

"For me, it was a tradition, something that was passed down generationally in my family. And we really embrace that and - and just run with it, because it's really, for us, that's what our sport is about," she says. "And hopefully we can push more of that positive message."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in tonight as Morgan visits with a woman currently competing in her fifth Olympic games, boasting a recent performance which included hitting 99 out of 100 clays.

It's tragic that we the American public is fed such crap by the media. Why did Bob Costas and Matt Lauer not get there act together and show the Olympic live ? There is only a 5 hour difference between East Cost and London. We dont want to watch this lousey package from Bob Costas and Matt Lauer. Bob Costas there are 80 countries that is compeating in the Olympic you arrogant ass make NBC looks like crap. NBC this coverage is disgusting. CNN we hope you all will be covering the next Olympic. Piers you might want to host it with CNN.

I appreciate your question to KIm Rhodes regarding gun control. She represents the other side of the coin not usually given by the pro gun control media when showing firearms related subject and is the reason so many of us are uneasy about the impact of uninformed gun control legislation. For example it seems unfathomable to the non gun owning public why anyone should need to be able to purchase 6000 rds of ammo as the Colorado shooter did. However I would suggest that if you polled Ms. Rhodes she might reveal that is not more than a few weeks of practice for her and there are many Kim Rhodes' out there shooting in local , clubs and sporting clays ranges with their friends spouses and children. Remember her practice rounds are 100 clays each and I can tell you now you do not reach her level of skill shooting 3-4 rounds a week. Maybe CNN should do a series on visiting various target shooting clubs and events such as the Grand National, the Muzzleloading matches in Friendship Indiana , Sporting clays ranges and regional events etc. as well as other target shooting events and I believe you might get a different view of the shooting sports.

Kim Rhode shots between 500 and 750 rounds in practice 7 days a week all year round. She has done so for the past twenty years. I do not put in quite so much practice, yet have shot over 1,000,000 practice have so many others in our sport. So, buying 20-90 flats (5,000-22,500 rounds total) at a time is not unusual by any means. In Kimberly's case her flats would be delivered by the palette by her sponsors (90 flats to a palette). That would be my guess: I never asked. Keep in mind that if you shoot 750 a day a palette is gone in 30 days....I know.

Gun control is not a good approach to gun safety. My belief is that qualified gun ownership at the individual level is mandantory to maintaining a free and strong society. By qualified I mean that every person above a minimum age should be educated in the safe and proper use of guns, whether they own a gun or not. Gun violence can be reduced by working to eliminate the root causes such as anger, hatred, and greed. There is a high price to pay for liberty and it is sad that innocent victims of gun violence must die. To me the alternative is the price of millions of lives lost if freedom is stolen from us – there are too many examples from history to be ignored.
