On Monday night, Piers Morgan sat down with swimmer Michael Phelps on the eve of the race that could be Phelp's 18th medal win, making him the most decorated Olympian in history. During the in-depth and very candid interview, Phelps opened up about learning from his mistakes, in particular the infamous photograph of him smoking marijuana soon after his star-making performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. "With every mistake that you make, you obviously have to pay for the consequences that come your way," said Phelps.
"I was very disappointed in the decision that I made [to smoke marijuana]," Phelps admitted but added, "I'll make a million mistakes in my life but for as long as I never make the same mistake again, then I've be able to learn and grow."
Later in the program, Phelps was clearly prepared for Morgan's signature question "Have you been properly in love?" when he responded in jest, "With what?"
The Olympic champion then comfortably revealed that he has been properly in love twice and when asked which is worst, having his heart broken or losing a race, Phelps answered simply, "I think they're both learning experiences."
