Ryan Lochte on his infamous grill: "I am taking this seriously but there’s so much more to life than just swimming"

Coming up tonight at 9 p.m., Piers Morgan sits down with swimmer Ryan Lochte, approaching his interview with the recently-minted 28-year-old in a way that only he can.

Joined in London by the man who recently collected five medals – including two golds – the "Piers Morgan Tonight" host is more interested in diamonds:

"I want to see the grill. Where’s this famous thing you’ve got?," asks Morgan, referencing the now iconic jeweled mouthpiece which features an American flag design.

As Lochte removes the bite-sized bling from his pocket, Morgan surmises "You love this, don’t you?"

Celebrating his birthday Friday, Lochte quickly agrees: "Oh I do. I love it."

Seated next to his Olympic champion son, Steve Lochte admits to being on board with all things bedazzled, noting, "I love it...It’s style."

And with that, Morgan dives in, popping the grill in his own mouth, choosing humor over hygiene: "Oh yeah, it feels so good."

Rumored to be valued anywhere from 15 to 25-thousand dollars, Morgan passes the piece back to Lochte, who accepts it gingerly, and explains his thinking behind the purchase:

"You know, it’s I guess part of my personality, letting everyone know that I’m not taking, I mean, I am taking this seriously but there’s so much more to life than just swimming. And that’s what I want people to know that I’m having fun doing this."

Watch the clip, and listen to the interview, then tune in this evening at 9 p.m. as the man who's trained against Michael Phelps for eight years reveals his ideal deserted island date.

Piers, Usain Bolt does not do that "arrow thing". He is doing a LIGHTNING Bolt.

Piers I was so happy to hear you say that the athletes should be singing their national anthem. I just told some co-workers today how disappointed I was with the USA ladies gymnastics team only 1 of the Fab 5 sang the national anthem and then when Gabby won the individual all around, she didn't sing. I'm with you. They are representing their country and should take pride and sing the anthem!!! Love your show!

Tara, I'm with you! I saw the Fab 5 ceremony and was totally shocked. I'm 26 and I've known the Nat'l Anthem since I was about 4 years old. Of course the words weren't fully understood until I was old enough to know how to say them properly, but say them I did. If it were me and I was on that podium, I'd be shouting the song and uniting with my team or standing proudly alone for my country!!! Like, George M. Cohan enthusiasm. I do understand that it is an emotional time, but SING ANYWAY! You are at the Olympics, not American Idol! GO USA!!!!

I absolutely disagree. It's lame as all **** when athletes try to sing their national anthems. They end up just awkwardly mouthing the lyrics, you can't hear them and I don't want to hear them. Stand silently and solemnly with pride and dignity and just reflect on your victory.

That's not something to be horrified about. some people dont want to sing or mouth the words. It's not like every other country does it. They are American but they are doing it for themselves alot more then they are doing for there country.
So i dont see the big deal.

I have been critical of Piers Morgan in the past but, to give credit where credit is due, I would like to congratulate him on his very generous donations to the Great Ormond St. Children's Hospital in London. I have been following his comments on Twitter and noted his heartfelt generosity. Well done Sir.

I happened to see this interview last night. I was surprised at a few things. But, most disappointing, with all these great achievements, it's so wonderful to see some humility – that is what creates greatness – and, there was none.

I was totally disgusted when Piers Morgan put Ryan Lochte's diamond grill in HIS OWN mouth! How rude, ignorant, undignified and unhygienic. This man is so cretinous as to defy common sense and reason.

This coverage has actually made me sick as an American and a lover of sports in General! To find out all the results before they happen is a travesty! They show some live events during the day but it's all the stuff no one wants to watch then they make you wait for 11pm for the actual good stuff to be on! NBC is greedy and a disgrace to America! I should be watching live events cheering for America live but no I get updates on my phone of who won then have to wait till 11pm to actually see these amazing Americans win their golds. Not to mention Ralph Lauren was another complete disgrace! To have these proud American athletes who have sacrificed so much training for these Olympic games for 4 years to come out in outfits that made them look French for one and two were made in China!!! Are they kidding me is this some conspiracy against America or something! Do you think these proud Americans want to open their french looking outfits to see made in China? I just don't get it i'm so disappointed with the coverage and outfits it made me sick! It just goes to show greed will always rule. Who cares about the millions of Americans out of work lets get it done for real cheap in China just to make an extra buck! Who cares that the outfits look French with barrets on their heads and the patch on the side of the barret was French colors it wasn't red, white and blue it was blue, whit and red? Who cares that we can't cheer for our American athletes live and cheer them on as long as we put it on in prime time to get better rating and line our pockets even more? I"m just so disgusted with this whole thing I'm just glad it hasn't affected our athletes and we are doing amazing in these games! Go Gabby and all the other proud American who have brought us all a great amount of pride being an American this summer!
